Bauma, Bauma uber alles! Yes, it was a wearying foot slog across what often felt like threequarters of Bavaria. Yes, it did bring Munich’s public transport system to a juddering halt. Yes, it did send through the roof the price of all hotel rooms this side of Austria. And yes, the 600,000+ visitors that came from far and wide by planes, trains and automobiles at least partially undid the huge environmental strides made by those exhibiting. But Bauma 2019 was epic. It was the plantman’s (or woman’s) wet dream made metal. The greatest collection of construction plant and equipment ever gathered in one place. And for one week in April, there was nowhere better to be.

It was a show that had it all: massive equipment on massive stands (Liebherr and Caterpillar, we’re looking at you); fantastic and breath-taking displays and demonstrations (take a bow Volvo, Bobcat and Hitachi); unexpected surprises (let’s all take a second to admire the Project TETRA wheel loader concept from Case); and so much more besides.

There were remotely-controlled machines, autonomous machines, hybrid machines, fully-electric machines and even machines fuelled with bio-methane. There were self-levelling machines, self-diagnostic machines, and machines that were operated from Germany even though they were thousands of miles away in the US or in Korea.

There were attachments – so many attachments – with the ability to lift, place, pull, push, rip, grab, break and pulverise. There was virtual reality and there was advanced telematics. There was innovation in every direction.

But here’s the thing. Looking back at Bauma 2019 (my eighth Bauma if my addled and unreliable memory serves me correctly) I have two lasting memories. One was the feeling of seemingly universal positivity. Every stand I visited (and I visited a LOT) was packed with people chatting, engaging and doing business. The aisles were filled with smiling, enthusiastic faces that not even the occasional downpour of rain could dampen. If Bauma is – as many believe - a barometer of market sentiment, then the European construction equipment industry is in rude health; and long may it continue.

My second lasting memory was really a timely reminder of why I started writing about construction equipment in the first place and why, 30 years later, I am still doing so. And that is the people. During my week at the greatest show on Earth, I spoke to people from Germany and France, Spain, Turkey and Italy, from Japan and China, and from both North and South America. I had a lunchtime beer with a Finn, chatted over a curry wurst with a Swede, and set the world to rights with a proud Bavarian and an equally proud Dutchman in a bar one evening. Those that know me will testify that I barely speak English, let alone any other language. But, like the 600,000+ people that descended upon the Messe Munchen for that one glorious week in April, I am fluent in plant. And even while British politicians were prolonging the agony of Brexit and casting us adrift from our European neighbours, we all got along just fine. Maybe, instead of speaking the language of division and conflict, the world’s politicians might be better speaking the language of plant. It is a language that unites.

Unduly Understated JCB opted for an uncharacteristically lowkey launch for the three latest additions to its X Series of hydraulic excavators. Yet perhaps those machines merited more of a fanfare. Mark Anthony reports.
The latest press launch held at its World Headquarters was, by JCB’s standards, a low-key affair; lacking in the pre-launch hype that has accompanied recent product introductions from the UK manufacturer; devoid of the pyrotechnics and razzamatazz that accompanied more recent product unveilings. Even the company’s chief innovation officer Tim Burnhope – a man who has traditionally channelled Steve Jobs in both confidence and showmanship – seemed content to let the new products just speak for themselves.
140X and 150X don’t just follow on from the two initial X Series machines. Rather, they build upon them; harnessing the lessons learned on those models to make the three new machines even better.
Admittedly, the new 131X, 140X and 150X excavators are not the JCB Hydradig, a machine that achieved the impossible by making the wheeled excavator both interesting and desirable. Neither are they the Hi-Viz dumper, a product that redefined the very essence of what a site dumper should look like and how it should perform. But the three new excavators, which will compete in the highly competitive 13 to 15 tonne operating weight class, will outsell the Hydradig and will be more important within the JCB product range than the Hi-Viz dumper. Furthermore, the 131X,

Testing Time At the time of the launch of the 20 tonne class 220X, there were those that questioned how JCB could talk about a new excavator series when there was just one model. The 210X which followed fairly soon after will have done little to disperse any such criticism. In truth, JCB probably could have come to market with a five model X Series range. But it didn’t. It didn’t because it was determined that the three latest models would be launched when they were right. Now they are. And the manufacturer knows they are not just because of the use of proven technology, powertrain and iron baked into the new machines; but also because the three new models have undergone a level of pre-launch testing that has pushed them to their working limits and beyond. As an example, machines have been strapped to a shaker rig that replicated more than 15,000 hours of non-stop tracking across

rough terrain. That test was carried out not to test key components such as the engine, transmission or the hydraulics. It was carried out to ensure that comparatively unimportant items such as wing mirrors, door hinges and catches and the boxing ring mounted on top of the counterweight could withstand the rigours of constant onsite vibration. When the manufacturer was satisfied that they could, the three new machines got the green light. Such attention to detail (which included placing a 110 kg operatorshaped dummy in the seat during the shake test) is precisely where increased residual values are born.
A revised counterweight boasts two purpose-designed impact points on the corners and along the lower edge to keep damage to an absolute minimum. The X Series models can be ordered with heavy-duty belly plates, side impact protection and a heavy-duty dipper arm with wear plates if required.
CommandPlus Cab The 131X, 140X and 150X excavators are direct replacements for the popular JS131, JS130 and JS145. The 131X will retains the 55kW JCB EcoMAX engine, while the 140X and 150X are powered by an 81kW JCB EcoMAX engine. At 2.5 metres wide, the new models are 80 mm wider allowing the installation of the much larger CommandPlus cab seen on the 220X, giving the operator an environment which is both spacious and comfortable. The cab - which is located on four hydraulic cab mounts is 15 percent larger, incorporating the ROPS frame within its structure and it has easily replaceable flat glazing all round. According to JCB, in cab noise is reduced by almost two thirds compared to the previous JS130 and JS145. The fully-sealed pressurised cab comes with a choice of comfortable Grammer seats, with heating and cooling options now available. The operator also benefits from seat mounted servo levers. A new command pod to the right of the seat that brings together all switches and controls in a single seatmounted unit. A new 7� monitor with intuitive menus and functionality can be accessed through an automotive-style rotary controller. Familiar Look The three new machines maintain the now familiar X Series appearance, with fuel and hydraulic tanks now mounted inside secondary body panels. All service access doors are double-skinned with zinc-plated contact surfaces for improved durability. The hydraulic tank also includes a new baffling system to reduce oil aeration and the 2,000-hour filter life of the larger X Series models, up from 1,000-hours on the previous JS models.

The X Series excavators use JCB’s proven global boom and arm design, although the 140X and 150X have a larger bucket cylinder to deliver an 11 percent increase in bucket tear-out force. The power boost duration has also been increased from 3 to 9 seconds, giving maximum bucket and dipper tear-out for

longer. To match these improvements, the hydraulic oil cooler size has been increased by 15 percent for superior cooling performance wherever the machine is working in the world. The 140X and 150X also come with a larger Kawasaki hydraulic pump that can
run at lower engine rpm, which means for every litre of fuel used, six per cent more material is moved. Fine tuning of the machines’ Kayaba valve block delivers improvements in flow sharing for multi-functional use. An automatic engine shut-off has been incorporated to further reduce fuel use when the machine is not in operation. All high flow pipework in key areas has been enlarged by 0.25” to reduce pressure losses in the system and all the pipework is attached to the boom with sturdy rubber clamps to reduce vibration, a feature shared with the larger 220X. Auxiliary flow shut-off taps are also the same as those on the larger 220X. Customers can now order the X Series machines with all of the required wiring to fit GPS and machine control systems from Topcon, Leica and Trimble, while the excavators can also be built Steelwrist-ready, for use with a tiltrotator. JCB £65 Million India Investment! JCB is to invest £65 million in a new plant in India as the company prepares to celebrate 40 years of manufacturing in the country, it was announced today.
The new factory will be located in Vadodara near the port city of Surat in the State of Gujarat on the West Coast of India and will fabricate parts for global production lines as the company prepares to meet increased demand. JCB Chairman Lord Bamford yesterday (Monday, March 25th) laid the foundation stone for the new plant which will be JCB’s sixth in India – a country which has been JCB’s biggest single market since 2007. The announcement follows the start of work on a new £50 million factory to build cabs for JCB machines in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire which will be completed later this year. “With major investment in manufacturing capacity in the UK and India, we are very well placed to grow our business in the future. This year we celebrate 40 years of JCB India and our success over those four decades is

down to our continual investment,” says Lord Bamford. “It’s fitting that we mark the 40th anniversary with an investment in a factory which will give us enormous manufacturing capacity.” JCB India already has factories in Delhi, Pune and Jaipur. Production at the new facility on a 44 acre site will begin next year. It will house the most modern laser cutting, welding and machining technology and will be a fork-lift free operation. It will be capable of processing 85,000 tonnes of steel annually. “For 40 years JCB has remained committed to India. The decision to build a new world-class factory at Vadodara builds on JCB’s commitment to India,” says JCB India MD Vipin Sondhi. “The chosen site is strategically important because it is located close to a major sea port which allows efficient transportation.”

The Case for Bio-Methane

A futuristiclooking wheel loader concept from Case might just have been the star of the show. Diggers & Dozers magazine’s Mark Anthony was there to witness the unveiling.
If someone had told me prior to the Bauma exhibition that one of the most interesting and exciting machines at the show would be a wheel loader from Case, I probably would have laughed or at least waited for the inevitable punch-line. After all, a wheel loader is a wheel loader. And when you’re competing against the likes of Caterpillar and Liebherr, making an innovation stand out from the crowd is always going to be an uphill struggle. Yet that is precisely what Case achieved when it lifted the veil on its new ProjectTETRA wheel loader concept machine. And don’t just take my word for it. I shot a very poor video of the machine in question as it was being unveiled. That video notched up 250,000 views on Instagram in just 24 hours. At the time of writing, it has racked up an astonishing 818,000 impressions on the platform. So what is so special about the ProjectTETRA wheel loader? The concept machine includes a methane-powered engine, specially designed and developed by sister brand FPT Industrial for construction applications. With a maximum power output of 171 kW, it delivers the same power and torque as its equivalent diesel engine found in the CASE 821G wheel loader. That biomethane is produced in biodigesters from waste products such as waste food, wood chippings and animal waste. “We’ve been researching sustainable fuel sources for our construction machinery for many years,” explains Carl Gustaf Goränsson, President of Construction. “Biomethane was the most logical choice for the wheel loader. We needed a fuel that could provide the drive and power that our customers demand. The fuel needed to be readily available, easy to refuel and power through a full day of work. We wouldn’t comprise on performance, so we set our designers quite a challenge.”

ProjectTETRA not only uses a sustainable energy source but also benefits the environment in other ways. The methane-powered wheel loader concept produces 95 percent less CO2 when running on biomethane, 90 percent less nitrogen dioxides and 99 percent lower particulate matter than a diesel-powered equivalent. It delivers an 80 percent reduction in overall emissions and also achieves a 50 percent reduction in drive-by noise levels.

“We don’t believe in developing technology for technology’s sake,” continues Goränsson. “Our innovations must solve real-world challenges in a simple and straightforward way. ProjectTETRA is suited to do so in common job sites; agricultural environments, waste handling centres and recycling businesses are perfect locations for a biogas production plant, providing a free source of fuel for the machines working on site. But biomethane isn’t the only option. ProjectTETRA will run on network methane too, providing access to lower emissions than diesel, even if onsite biomethane production is not an option. This is important as we see changing regulations in some regions.” ProjectTETRA’s cab features wraparound glazing and a high visibility roof panel, increasing the total glazed area by 16 percent when compared to a standard wheel loader. All-around visibility is achieved with the use of viewing cameras instead of wing mirrors. These are automatically linked to the direction of the machine and viewed on the A-pillar mounted displays.
The lightweight and robust structure has been designed to withstand the extreme conditions present in construction environments. In addition, the airless tyres reduce overall machine weight and a large footprint delivers low contact pressure. Advanced connectivity is achieved with integrated sensors,

providing a stream of real-time data to both the operator and the control room. When active, the integrated sidewall lights are illuminated and also function as an additional safety feature. Of course, as anyone that follows developments within the automotive sector will testify, concept cars do not always make it off the drawing board and into production. Case is confident this will not happen with ProjectTETRA. Indeed, the company claims that this machine – or something very like it – will be commercially available in the next two years.

Although Caterpillar also allowed visitors to their stand to operate a machine located thousands of miles away, Doosan claims the TeleOperation demonstration on its stand is the first to remotely control a machine across such a large distance between locations which have a time difference of eight hours, using 5G telecommunications technology.
Doosan’s 5G Whizz The Doosan stand at Bauma 2019 afforded operators the opportunity to drive an excavator. But it was an operator experience with a twist. Pop along to the Doosan stand, they said. You can operate a 40 tonne excavator, they said. And they meant it…sort of.
In what was one of the highlights of the show, Doosan utilised 5G technology to allow operators to drive a Doosan DX380LC-5 40 tonne crawler excavator
For TeleOperation to function properly, it is essential to deliver live video streaming at the operator’s station in a reliable way that minimises time lag in the system for the operator. With its ultra-reliability and low latency (signal delay), the new 5G network overcomes these issues in the Doosan system, providing 10 times faster bandwidth and 10 times lower latency than the 4G network. Special features incorporated include a low-latency video transmission module with fast video transfer (with encoding and decoding), an important factor in reducing the time delay. LG U+ has also introduced new modules providing low latency image processing to further minimize the time delay. Another factor in creating more effective remote control is the use of Doosan’s innovative electrohydraulic technology in the DX380LC-5 excavator. The DX380LC-5 excavator being remotely controlled at Bauma is still a standard machine, which allows Doosan to guarantee the performance and the compatibility of third party attachments and other equipment installed on the excavator. It is also possible to carry out both normal operation and TeleOperation with same machine.

Of course, there is one small obstacle that potential UK buyers would need to overcome before attempting to adopt this technology within these shores. While the US and South Korea are among the first countries with commercial 5G networks, rollout in the UK is yet to commence. However, the country’s biggest mobile network – EE has announced that it will be launching a 5G network in London, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Belfast, Birmingham and Manchester this summer.

Liebherr Goes Above and Beyond

The Liebherr display at Bauma pushed the boundaries of what an exhibition stand can look like. The exhibits on display, meanwhile, pushed the innovation envelope even further. Diggers & Dozers magazine’s Mark Anthony is in awe.

If Bauma is Digger Disneyland, then the Liebherr stand is Snow White’s Castle (appropriate given that the design of that castle is based upon the Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany). Like that castle, the Liebherr stand looms large over the entire Bauma showground; the logo on the slatted side of the four-storey, semipermanent office block from which the company conducts its business every bit

as recognisable as the castle backdrop to the Disney logo. Like Disney, Liebherr is a masterclass in branding; a pioneer and an innovator; an enviable marriage of style AND substance. The triennial Bauma show, which takes place in Liebherr’s back yard, is the company’s opportunity to shine. And at Bauma 2019, the company shone like never before. It is easy to get caught up in the magnitude of the Liebherr stand; to wax lyrical about the sheer size and volume of machines shoe-horned into the stand. I can certainly vouch for the size of the stand. I tried to film it in a single take walkthrough. Even missing out the numerous cranes, the drilling rigs, truck mixers, a good many excavators and most of the wheel loaders, that single walkthrough was more than four minutes long. Had I included all the exhibits, I’d still be filming today. But size isn’t everything. And amongst the machines on display were several making their global debut and reconfirming Liebherr’s position at the very cutting edge of construction equipment development. Generation 8 At the beginning of the year, Liebherr launched seven new crawler excavator models under 50 tonnes. The Generation 8 series, which has gone into production at Liebherr-France SAS in Colmar, is made up of seven models ranging from 22 to 45 tonnes: R 922, R 924, R 926, R 930, R 934, R 938 and R 945.
To achieve Stage V emissions standards, the R 926 replaces the Stage IV excavator of the same name that was launched in 2016. The R 930 is a brand new weight category for the crawler excavator series developed and produced by Liebherr-France SAS. This was developed in answer to customers’ needs for 30-tonne excavators: The
easy-to-transport, versatile and efficient R 930 crawler excavator more than meets the expectations of customers and operators. A Higher Power The digging forces and tractive forces of the undercarriage and the swing torque of the upper-carriage have been significantly increased compared to the previous generation. Thanks to these improvements, the R 926 and R

930 crawler excavators achieve a much higher level of performance. In conjunction with the launch of this new generation of excavators, a new work equipment concept was devised that optimises the load curve and inertia of the swivelling drive in order to reduce fuel consumption. The R 926 and R 930 crawler excavators are available with a variety of robust X-shaped undercarriage types.

The R 930 that was on display on the Liebherr stand at Bauma complies with Stage V emission standards and – together with the R 926 – is based on a specific platform developed by Liebherr. The R 926 and the R 930 have an operating weight of between 26 and 36 tonnes, and achieve a power of 150 kW and 180 kW respectively. The backhoe bucket capacities vary from 0.55 to 1.75 m3 on the R 926 and between 1 and 2.15 m3 on the R 930. The R 926 and R 930 models are available worldwide with the relevant engines.

The crawler chassis require zero maintenance. The track rollers are lubricated for life and the automatic central lubrication system makes it possible to maximise both component service life and productivity.
Maximised Safety The operator benefits from an ultraspacious, temperature-controlled cab. To make work particularly convenient, the excavators have pneumatic seats with vertical and longitudinal
suspension and a high-resolution, extremely user-friendly 7” touchscreen. The windscreen can be fully lowered. LED technology has completely replaced the halogen headlights, increasing the operating life and reducing the electricity consumption – while also dramatically improving the lighting. The range of lighting is available in the form of separate packages, with the highperformance LED+ lighting packages also available as an option. The unobstructed panoramic visibility and the monitoring cameras at the rear and sides ensure maximum safety in the driver’s work environment. The fold-away console makes it easy and safe to access the cab. The certified ROPS cab structure provides robust protection in the event of the crawler excavator tipping over. The rear window serves as an emergency exit on all configuration versions of the excavator. The windscreen and right-hand window are made of tinted laminated glass. The machine has been carefully designed to offer even higher standards of safety. The upper-carriage is now accessed via a secured access platform (either standard or optional extra depending on the region). Additionally, the entire upper-carriage is fitted with non-slip studs and does not have any protruding elements. The R 926 and R 930 crawler excavators also boast a new maintenance concept with maintenance points that can be accessed from the ground. The engine oil, hydraulic oil, fuel and urea levels can be read straight off the display for convenience. Aiming for Autonomy If the Generation 8 excavators are glimpse of the now, then two other items on display on the mammoth Liebherr stand afforded a glimpse of the very near future.

The company used the show to unveil the innovative, adaptive concept INTUSI to the public for the first time, which – the company claims – “will revolutionise the communication with and between construction machines”. INTUSI connects Liebherr construction machinery and material handlers to the Internet of Things (IoT) and is combining an intelligent operating logic with a smart machine intelligence. INTUSI stands for INTuitive USer Interface. The objective during the development was to provide machine operators with a future-focused machine interface with Liebherr’s

behind the 7XX is fully working, it also demonstrates Liebherr’s confidence in the unit’s ability to operate safely around people and other machines.
Yet, even as the company is launching a new interface to make the life of the operator simpler, safer and more productive, it is also working on technology that could ultimately replace operators altogether.
That machine, together with the new Generation 8 excavators, the huge
rigid dumptruck and the massive mining face shovel at the front of the stand attracted considerable interest throughout the duration of the weeklong exhibition. But there is no question that the true star of the show was Liebherr itself.
Central to the company’s working demonstration was the 7XX autonomous dozer, its independence clear for all to see through its lack of an operator’s cab. Like many of its fellow exhibitors at the Bauma show, Liebherr was keen to stress that this machine was a concept. However, while most of its rivals showed their concept machines in a static presentation, Liebherr’s autonomous dozer was fully functional throughout the show, operating in a relatively confined space whilst surrounded by thousands of eager onlookers. Electrified Hidromek The Turkish manufacturer, which has a strong presence in the German market, used the Bauma show to unveil its new H4 Series excavators. But just as eye-catching was the new HİCON 7 W, a smart, economic and ecofriendly electric city excavator. Utilising Lithium-ion batteries, the machine is a designed-from-the-ground-up electric machine on which even the hydraulic have been adjusted to suit electric power. The HV (high voltage) area, within which the batteries are located, is protected behind the vehicle for optimum safety. Other service points are gathered under the electric area hood and can be reached easily for maintenance duties.
A one-time charge provides eight hours of usage. The machine can be fully charged in just three hours at a car charging station. A quick charge is also available in 30 minutes or it can be charged in a house or garage with appropriate sockets. According to Hidromek, the HİCON 7 W can interact with its surroundings through its back screen. It relays information to its surroundings for safe driving with its “Environmental Safety System”, which is the first and only in the world specially developed for HİCON. the machine, a warning message appears on the back screen to warn them. Owing to its “Environment Safety System”, it continues to warn its surroundings in bad weather conditions through its rear information screen. It also warns the following driver in the event of sudden braking. Additionally, HİCON 7 W draws the attention of the person or the vehicle approaching it with a red laser line provided within 5 metres. In addition, the speed of the machine is visible on this rear screen. Due to its solar system, it continues to give information on its rear screen to the city with its Safety Sleep Mode. The back screen can be used for 24 hours non-stop and information such as date, time and weather can be displayed on it.

It’s Electrifying Diesel’s vice-like grip on the demolition and construction industry’s fuel needs diminishes with each passing year. And at Bauma 2019, several manufacturers suggested that the future is electric. It seemed that every stand at Bauma 2019 this year had its own hashtag as each manufacturer attempted to corner the social media world by encouraging visitors to leap aboard its specific bandwagon. But the #electrifiedbauma hashtag adopted by Wacker Neuson was more than a mere marketing gimmick. In fact, it was a signifier of a wider development taking place within the industry as manufacturers strive to replace the increasingly unpopular and untenable diesel fuel upon which it has relied for as long as most of us can remember. Wacker Neuson could back up its hashtag too. The latest additions to the zero emission series are the wheel dumper DW15e, the zero tail miniexcavator EZ17e, and the excavator EZ26e’s “technology study” concept machine.

According to sales director Alexander Greschner, it is already possible to operate an entire construction site free of emissions with the zeroemission series, which includes the wheel loader, track and wheel dumper, mini-excavator and even the battery-powered rammer, batterypowered plates and, in future, the internal vibrator systems for concrete consolidation. With the zero tail excavator EZ26e, which was first presented to the public at Bauma, Wacker Neuson provides the battery-operated counterpart to the conventional excavator EZ26. The EZ26e is currently still located in the phase of a technology study. Even more certain is the availability of the second zero tail mini-excavator EZ17e, which will go into production in 2019 and be available from autumn onwards.

Both electric excavators fulfil the requirements of equipment rental yards, as they do not require additional training for their service personnel for the maintenance of the machines. If the excavators are operating in one location, for example at an interior demolition, a lithium-ion battery can be charged simultaneously at the household socket or at a mains power connection (express charging process), which increases the machine’s running time over the whole workday. solution for the transport of material. The DW15e is equipped with an electric motor for the drive system and another for the work hydraulics, in order to appropriately and independently take on output as needed and minimize energy consumption. When braking the machine or when driving downhill, the energy is fed back into the battery through modern recuperation technology. The energy is therefore not, as usual, converted into heat but is used to charge the battery. While Wacker Neuson has focused its attention on truly compact machines, Caterpillar incorporated similar technology into the 906 electric concept wheel loader which is powered not by a diesel engine but by a sealed lithiumion battery and dedicated high-torque electric motors. That means it emits no particulate matter, no NOx, no CO2 and limited noise, making it an ideal loader for work in urban environments or public areas. The 906 electric concept’s 41 kW battery takes about three hours to charge. On a fully charged battery, the concept machine can operate in a medium-duty application, such as mixed truck loading or material handling, for up to 4.5 hours (up to 6.5 hours with a one-hour charge during the lunch break). When the next generation of the 906 electric concept featuring a larger battery is introduced, working times are expected to increase to eight hours, in line with many working shifts. Additional built-in charge modes may be available as well, including a rapid-boost mode to take maximum advantage of short recharge periods when the machine is idle and a slower overnight mode to condition the lithium-ion batteries and extend battery pack life. The goal with any fully electric product is to achieve performance levels comparable to those of its dieselpowered equivalent — and testing so far shows that to be the case with the 906 electric concept. Though the concept machine weighs in slightly heavier than the 906M, that’s expected to change with the next generation concept. Thanks to a powerful, quick-responding electric drive, the loader can reach top speeds of 20 km/hour for fast cycle times on the job. Batteries are sealed and maintenance-free, with no need to monitor liquid levels or add water. Service demands are minimal, with only hydraulic system servicing and greasing required.

Bobcat Goes Remote Remotely-controlled machines were all the rage at Bauma 2019. But Bobcat’s take on the system – which directly targets the demolition sector – was especially eye-catching. Skid steer giant Bobcat has the demolition sector in its sights with the launch of a new remote control system that is compatible with all skid-steer, compact track and all wheel steer loader models equipped with the company’s Selectable Joystick Controls. Bobcat claims to be the first manufacturer to introduce a remote control system as original ‘Plug&Play’ equipment, rather than offering it as an add-on development from a third party. The new system will be commercially available later this year. The new plug and play system comprises an easily portable and industrial radio remote control solution that can be mounted and dismounted on machines in a matter of minutes, leaving behind the standard machine in its original form. Being able to control the loader from outside the cab offers the operator a completely new and alternative opportunity in terms of visibility and communication.

Not only does it provide direct sight of the progress of work with a range of attachments, further increasing the versatility of the loader and a comprehensive range of attachments. Remote control aims to increase safety, comfort and productivity by distancing the operator from dust, noise, vibrations and other hazards encountered at the workface or on job sites that require special safety precautions. Work can be done faster with higher precision and, in some applications, with fewer personnel on the job site. For increased safety, the system also features an emergency stop button and drop and tilt detection. Every remote-control kit is protected by a dedicated password, with twoway communication providing all the

important information about the loader (such as fuel and oil status, warnings, etc.) on a 3.5-inch transflective colour backlit LCD display. The system provides most of the functions that can be performed via direct loader operation, including throttle, light, creep and float controls. There is also speed management control to ensure easier operation in certain applications (such as trenching, tilling, scarifying and so on). The system in very intuitive to use and the training for end users will be provided by Bobcat dealers. The remote control system is supplied with two exchangeable batteries offering a long 20-hour battery life. The protective case ensures it is easier to transport from one job site to another. This forms part of an updated stateof-the-art ergonomic design with the system housed in a rugged and weatherproof enclosure. A key application for the new remote control system is likely to be in demolition environments, where the remote control system gives the operator the ability to do work from a distance, free from dirt, dust and noise.

Breath of Fresh Air Telescopic handler pioneer Mainitou used the Bauma show to unveil its new Oxygen brand which is focused upon providing customers and users with ever more sustainable solutions, while maintaining a level of performance and cost-efficiency that are in line with users’ expectations. Arnaud Sochas, Innovation Manager for Manitou group, explains the approach: “Players in the construction market (rental companies and manufacturers) are faced with an increasing demand for flexible, low-carbon solutions, especially for urban work sites. In this context, it has become essential to focus on the requirements of zero emissions and low noise levels on extended work areas. With the Oxygen label, the Manitou group wants to provide a concrete response to these needs. Our approach obviously includes electric machines, but our primary aim is to provide a proportional solution tailored to each application. These solutions must be cost-effective for the user, and we are working on reducing their total cost of ownership while at the same time reducing their environmental impact.”

Integrating seamlessly into the new “Oxygen” label, the ATJ 200 e Oxygen platform is the group’s first 100 percent electric all-terrain platform model. With a working height of up to 20 metres for a maximum capacity of 230 kg, this model provides the same performance as a diesel-powered model while reducing total cost of ownership for the user. CAT Updates Wheel Loaders The 2019 product update package for Cat M Series Medium Wheel Loaders (950M – 982M) includes technology advances that provide: lower operating costs via extended service intervals; enhanced operator comfort with new seats and suspensions; emissions control strategies to meet EU Stage V standards (EU only); added machine configurations (982M Forestry Machine and 982M High Lift); expanded productivity measurement tools; remote software update capability; and refinements in ground engaging
tool and coupler systems. Periodic updates allow Caterpillar to bring new and improved features to market more quickly and more frequently than do conventional New Product Introduction (NPI) cycles. U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final and EU Stage V models save maintenance costs by extending engine oil, engine oil filter and hydraulic oil filter change intervals from 500 hours up to 1,000 hours. Based on estimated comparisons of total engine and hydraulic fluids, filters, and sampling
costs during a 6,000-hour period, costs can be potentially reduced by 16 to 23 percent. (For Tier 3 equivalent models, extended intervals apply only to hydraulic filters.) In addition, several fuel and engine oil filters are being converted from spin-on to cartridge-type. Benefits of cartridgetype filters include fewer parts to replace at servicing (housing is retained), easier disposal of used elements, and less costly replacement parts. The “next generation” of seats and suspensions offers three trim levels— comfort, deluxe, and premium plus—and feature high-visibility, seat-adjustment controls, as well as ride stiffness adjustments. A new “breakthrough” suspension for deluxe and premium plus trim levels increases dampening at the top and bottom of seat travel, providing additional suspension stability and avoiding hard stops at travel limits. The ride stiffness of the seat suspension is adjustable to different settings, allowing operators to tailor seat dampening to individual preferences and to the application. This feature was previously included only with EH steering (joystick and wheel), but with the 2019 product update, it is now included with HMU steering wheel units with deluxe and premium plus seats.

All time high A record-breaking group of JCB apprentices had two reasons to celebrate at the launch of National Apprenticeships Week on Monday (March 4th). A total of 79 apprentices were awarded their apprenticeship certificates – at the same time as getting coveted contracts of employment with the Staffordshirebased digger maker. The group is the biggest in the history of JCB to graduate as Level 2 and 3 apprentices in a single year. They received their awards from JCB directors at a special graduation ceremony at JCB’s World Headquarters, Rocester. JCB has a long history of recruiting apprentices and this year marks 55 years since the first intake of nine completed their training and were presented with their apprenticeship certificates by company founder Joseph Cyril Bamford. “New talent joining the business is fundamental to JCB’s future growth and success; our business is growing rapidly and the apprentices are an important
part of our plans for the long term,” says JCB Chief Executive Graeme Macdonald. “Over the past five years JCB has invested £30 million into its training programmes with more than 700 new recruits joining the business as apprentices or graduates. Watching their Waste Line West London Composting (WLC) has introduced a JCB 457 Wastemaster wheeled loader at its facility near the M40 motorway in Uxbridge, Middlesex. Specialising in in-vessel bulk composting of green, and kerbside collected kitchen waste, the WLC site has the capacity to process 75,000 tonnes of organic waste each year from which a variety of high quality soil conditioners for agricultural and commercial use are manufactured. The JCB 457 Wastemaster will be used to transfer material around the WLC site as it undergoes the composting process.
On arrival, waste material is shredded before beginning its rigorous decontamination process in one of 16, 200 tonne capacity vessels. This stage of the process typically takes between 7 and 10 days and at the end of this period, material is transferred using the JCB 457 Wastemaster to new vessels, and the procedure is repeated. Once the in-vessel stage is finished, the JCB 457 Wastemaster is used again to transport material to a maturation site where it is laid out in long ‘windrows’ which are turned regularly for a further 6 weeks. Mature product is delivered in bulk to farms and other agricultural businesses within a 100 mile radius of WLC’s site – although local residents and organisations can purchase supplies from the site during normal trading hours. The JCB 457 Wastemaster, which was supplied to WLC by JCB dealer, Greenshields JCB, features a powerful new MTU diesel engine, while its CommandPlus cab delivers outstanding operator comfort and productivity.

The new Cat 777G offhighway truck builds on the legacy of performance, reliability, and long-term durability established by 777 models since 1977, both in mining and large earthmoving applications.
Building on a Legacy Rated payload for the new 777G is 89.4 Tonnes, with a standard-body volume (SAE 2:1) of 64.1 m3. The design of the 777G, which replaces the 777F, focuses on fuel efficiency, enhanced visibility, and operator comfort, convenience, and safety. The new 777G’s Cat C32 ACERT™ engine meets US EPA Tier 4 Final as well as EU Stage V emission standards and is available in configurations to meet emission standards of less regulated

(LRC) countries. The engine delivers 765 kW and incorporates a number of fuelconservation features. Auto Neutral Idle allows the 777G transmission to intermittently shift to neutral when the truck is idling in a forward gear to avoid stalling the torque converter and increasing engine speed. Engine Idle Shutdown, an operatorselected feature, stops the engine when the truck idles in park for more than a preset interval. Speed Limiting provides

an alternative to gear-limiting the 777G by allowing the truck to travel at a more fuel-efficient engine speed and in a more efficient transmission gear. Advanced Productivity Electronic Control Strategy (APECS) transmission controls boost fuel
efficiency by maintaining momentum and speed on uphill grades during shifts. In addition, the 777G has two operating modes, Standard Economy and Adaptive Economy. Standard Economy saves
fuel by reducing engine power by 0.5 to 15 percent, based on the fleet and economic conditions at a particular site. Adaptive Economy requires a production baseline for the site using the Advisor display, and then, as the truck travels the haul cycle, the system automatically evaluates the power rating needed to meet baseline requirements. Full power is applied when needed, and reduced power is applied when appropriate. The efficiency of the 777G’s performance is further enhanced by 7 percent more engine torque and an increase in top speed. The 777G features a redesigned cab, easier to enter and exit, and having a new operator seat on the left and a more comfortable trainer seat on the right. A new console with an integrated hoist-and-shift lever enhances convenience, as does more interior space for storage. The truck’s design also emphasises improved visibility, to both the work area and instrumentation, and overall visibility is further enhanced with an optional object-detection system. Convenience items include a powered left window, automatic temperature control, throttle lock for long uphill grades, and reduced

interior sound (by 50 percent, compared with predecessor models) Operator safety is a primary design factor for the 777G, with roll-over and falling-object protective structures integrated into the cab’s design. Laminated glass is used in the front and left windows, and emergency egress is provided via a right-side hinged window. A ground-level engine-shutdown switch is readily accessible, and a secondary steering system is provided in the event of the primary steering system failure. Powerful wet-disc brakes are used at all four corners and provide parking brake and slope-holding capability. Brake life can be extended with an available engine brake, and a brake-wear indicator facilitates timely maintenance. Automatic retarding adds to positive control on downhill grades, and a new steering-sensitive traction-control system assists when ground conditions deteriorate The 777G’s major structures are designed for long-term durability in harsh operating conditions, engineered to endure through more than one power-train life cycle. Box-section castings are used strategically in highstress areas, a new front frame design increases the approach angle on ramps and grades, and a heavy-duty rear axle housing axle allows increased lubrication and filtration of critical components. The Dual Slope Body, designed for optimum material retention on haul roads with steep slopes, carries material low and centred for stability. Heaped capacity is 60.2 m3 in its standard configuration. Two side-board sizes increase capacity for lighter weight materials. The X body has a flat floor and facilitates metering material into a crusher; standard heaped capacity is 64.1 m3. Rubber or steel liners are available for both bodies. Light-material bodies provide capacities to 126 m3. Tire life can be extended for the 777G with the TKPH/TMPH feature that calculates tire loading, and a mudprotection package is available to help keep power train components clean. Hydraulic-oil filter life is 1,000 hours under normal conditions. Fluid-fill and extraction points are grouped for convenience, and all check points are located at ground level and lighted for night access. A master disconnect switch, engine lock-out switch, and hydraulic lockout switch provide a convenient method when servicing the 777G.
JCB Wins Court Injunction
JCB has been granted a preliminary injunction by a French court against Manitou which orders the company to stop producing telehandlers featuring a patented JCB productivity device. The ruling by the Judge at Court of the First Instance in Paris means that the company, based near Nantes, cannot manufacture, sell or lease telescopic handlers equipped with the patented feature. “We invest many millions of pounds in developing and patenting innovative and sophisticated engineering solutions which benefit our customers all over the world,” says JCB CEO Graeme Macdonald. “We will not tolerate any copying or infringement of our intellectual property rights wherever in the world they occur.” During operation of Loadall telescopic handlers fitted with JCB’s patented Longitudinal

Load Moment Control (LLMC) system, sensors monitor the weight being retained on the rear axle. If the sensors detect the rear axle weight is reducing past a pre-set threshold, then the system gradually locks out the hydraulics to prevent further weight being transferred from the rear axle to the front, therefore avoiding the machine tipping forward. To allow operators to drive continuously without any loss of productivity, JCB has a patented feature on its LLMC system that automatically disengages the device while the machine is moving (EP 2 263 965). This feature prevents JCB’s telehandlers unnecessarily locking out the hydraulics and giving false indications of instability when the machine is simply re-handling or travelling over rough ground. It is the use of this feature the French court has ordered Manitou to cease by March 13th. The court also ordered Manitou to pay costs in the case.

Bobcat Forestry Boost Providing true working demonstrations of the company’s forestry cutter attachments for the first time in the UK, Bobcat has completed an exciting tour of Customer Roadshow events to promote Bobcat products for forestry, agriculture, construction, landscaping and estate management.

The three Roadshow events were held at a variety of venues including an orchard farm, a woodland farm estate and woods alongside an airport car park. Held near Canterbury in Kent, Harrogate in North Yorkshire and in Greater Manchester, the demonstrations were hosted by Bobcat authorised dealers, Bobcat of London, Grays Machinery and Norwest Plant, respectively. “Bobcat prides itself on driving the market, leading the way and being best in class with innovative new products and being active in demonstrating a full range of equipment to provide solutions for customers’ requirements in a wide range of market sectors,” says Alastair Jones, Bobcat Attachments District Manager. “This latest successful

Roadshow Tour was organised with this in mind, focusing on solutions for customers in the forestry, agriculture, construction, landscaping and estate management industry.” A steady stream of existing and prospective customers at all three events were able to see Bobcat compact track loaders and Bobcat attachments working in a variety of different scenarios. Highlights included the first demonstrations in the UK of Bobcat’s recently launched FRC150ST standard torque and FRC200HT high torque forestry cutters. At the first event held on the 150 acres of orchards at Newborn Farm in Grove outside Canterbury, visitors could see how effective the forestry cutters are for reducing old trees in minutes, leaving a carpet of material behind that can be absorbed back into the ground. Host for the day was Bobcat of London, based in West Thurrock in Essex, the Authorised Bobcat Dealer for London, Essex, Kent, East Sussex, West Sussex, Surrey, Hertfordshire and Middlesex. After the day in Kent, the Bobcat Roadshow truck travelled north to set up for the next event at the Follifoot Ridge woodland farm estate near Harrogate. This was organised by Grays Machinery,
based in Bedale, the new Authorised Bobcat Dealer for North and West Yorkshire. Visitors from Grays Machinery were joined by those invited by AMS Bobcat Limited, the Bobcat dealer based in Scunthorpe, which has just expanded its existing areas of Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire with the addition of South Yorkshire. The audience on the day was able to see Bobcat equipment being used to clear and remove unwanted undergrowth, shrubs and trees next to a public pathway on the edge of the woodland farm estate. The last stop in the UK for the Bobcat Roadshow was at Hunters Airport Car Park in Heald Green in Greater Manchester. The car park is nearby to and serves the very busy Manchester Airport. The compact track loaders and forestry cutters were used to clear an extensive area of woodland to make the way for new car parking space for the airport. The event was hosted by Wigan-based Norwest Plant Ltd, the Authorised Bobcat dealer for North-West England and North Wales. Providing cutting widths of 1.5 and 2.0 m, respectively, the Bobcat FRC150ST and
FRC200HT forestry cutters are designed for continuous work on bushes and trees 100 to 120 mm in diameter, intermittent use for trees with a diameter from 150 to 220 mm and occasional use on trees 220 to 300 mm in diameter. The FRC150ST is designed for use on the smaller Bobcat S630/H and S650/H skidsteer loaders and T590/H and T650/H compact track loaders. Like Bobcat’s smaller 1.5 m FRC150HT high torque model, the FRC200HT is compatible with the Bobcat T770H and T870H compact tracked loaders and S770H and S850H skid-steer loaders. Mounted on T590H and T770H loaders at the Roadshows, the Bobcat forestry cutters have very varied applications, ranging from those in agriculture including vineyards, orchards, nurseries and tree care including those with compact or limited site access; forestry including cutting fire breaks in woods and forests, clearing work and removing/ thinning unwanted undergrowth, shrubs and trees; wildlife, national park, leisure, golf club and country estate management; perimeter maintenance of facilities such as schools and military bases; to site development in construction for removing undergrowth and trees before site and hazardous waste survey work. The forestry cutters can also be used to maintain vegetation, brambles and shrubs next to Path and Ride areas, pathways and other right-of-ways, including removal of invasive species such as Rhododendron plants; utilities (electric lines, walkways, bridges, canals and riversides); rail lines and embankments and roadside verges and banks next to highways as well as clean-up work after storms and floods. They can also be used in delicate and/ or environmentally sensitive areas where precision cutting/low ground disturbance are required. As is mandatory, the Bobcat T590H and T770H compact track loaders were both equipped with the Forestry Applications Kit from Bobcat, to ensure safe operation of the forestry cutters, protecting the machine and operator from flying objects and debris. The Kit includes an impact resistant front door, which must be installed in order to operate the forestry cutters. The forestry cutters do not work at all if the loader door is not installed. For work in the confined spaces in woodland and forests, front and rear light guards are added to the loader

to protect the lights. A guard protects the hydraulic quick couplers, hoses and wire harness from falling trees and branches. A level II FOPS (ISO 3449) protects the operator and the cab from falling trees and objects, while top and rear polycarbonate windows provide additional protection for the operator. All functions of the forestry cutter can be fingertip controlled from the operator seat without requiring the operator to remove their hand from the loader steering levers. Shields protect the lift cylinders against debris and help to reduce material buildup in the engine compartment. Although daily maintenance is essential in this type of work, a debris screen on the radiator ensures continuous operation and makes cleaning up easier. Based on feedback from the field, the FRC150ST incorporates many improvements over the previous FRC150 model. Among the improvements, the FRC150ST is manufactured almost entirely from Hardox, with a specially
designed new fixed motor offering greater output and efficiency. The enhanced design also offers a new, lighter drum, with carbide teeth, new hose routing and greater performance and manoeuvrability. The FRC150HT and FRC200HT have been enhanced with a new variable, high torque motor providing 40% more power and several other updates to improve performance. The latter include a new drum design, new routing for the hoses, a reduction in weight, improved visibility and much more, increasing efficiency and improving manoeuvrability. With the new high torque motor, the FRC150HT and FRC200HT provide much better fuel efficiency compared to the previous models. When the forestry cutters encounter something hard, the high torque motors provide the power required, but when light brush is being cut for example, the same power is not needed and the machine recognises this and as a result, adjusts the motor accordingly to provide huge savings on fuel.
The forestry cutters mulch trees and underbrush in minutes − leaving a carpet of mulch behind when clearing trees and bushes for any kind of application. They have hydraulicallyadjustable front gates that can be opened while cutting debris and then closed to retain material and to provide the coarseness or fineness of mulch that the finishing requires. The forestry cutters form part of the comprehensive Bobcat range of attachments for forestry, woodland and estate management, amenity and landscaping work, which includes stump grinders, wood chippers, brushcutters, flail cutters, augers and tree transplanters. At the Roadshows, as well as the forestry cutters, a stump grinder and a flail cutter, other attachments being used included the Bobcat Brushcat rotary cutter, the root grapple, the brushsaw, pallet forks, a 184 cm skeleton bucket, a 178 cm digging bucket and a 183 cm soil conditioner.

The ‘Go To’ Machine A JCB Hydradig 110W Wastemaster is helping RiverRidge – the largest independent waste management operator in Northern Ireland – to further improve operational efficiency at its materials recovery facility in its Maydown site in Londonderry. Supplied by JCB dealer, Dennison JCB, the Hydradig is being used to undertake a range of core duties, including loading and unloading lorries, sorting waste materials, delivering loads to RiverRidge’s shredders and ensuring that the site is kept tidy at all times.
At the Maydown site, a range of industrial, domestic and commercial waste is refined and turned into alternative fuels, which are exported by RiverRidge to users across Europe and Scandinavia. Can you tell us about Engcon? Engcon is the world’s leading manufacturer of innovative tiltrotators and other excavator attachments. For nearly 30 years, we’ve been manufacturing and supplying a range of products that fundamentally improve the functionality of excavators.

Engcon first launched in Sweden in the 90s and since then our tiltrotators have become the go-to attachment for excavator operators throughout Scandinavia. The Scandinavians have seen the potential to increase productivity through efficiency and as a result have really embraced tiltrotators. With more than 30 years of industry experience, we have a great understanding of the construction industry and the needs of excavator operators here in the UK and we know there are many additional benefits to be gained from using tiltrotators. Simply put, an excavator without a tiltrotator is like using a trowel with a plaster cast on your arm, but if you’ve never known anything different you wouldn’t necessarily understand the benefits of being able to articulate a bucket or other attachment. Our product innovation all centres on our flagship tiltrotators. They allow the excavator operator to rotate any attachment continuously through 360˚ and tilt up to 45˚, which makes the excavator more flexible and dramatically increases efficiency. Making tiltrotators means that we make hitches – not just for the tiltrotator itself or as a top hitch to allow the tilty to be removed for specific applications, but also as a standalone product for use with our buckets and other attachments. Our intelligent hitches prevent operators making mistakes or trying to cut corners. If the hitch is not fully closed with both bucket axles in precisely the right position, not only is there a dipper-mounted strobe and audible alarm going off, but machine functions such as slew and the boom ram can be disabled. You also need to ground the bucket before you can operate the hitch, meaning no more dropped buckets.

Importantly, because a tiltrotator transforms the way a digger works, it often means that they become tool carriers, rather than just excavators. For this reason we have developed what is probably the most comprehensive range of attachments of any construction equipment manufacturer. As well as a massive range of all types of buckets, we make sorting and timber grabs, cassette mounted tools including grippers and sweeper rollers, as well as grading beams, pallet forks, compacters, tarmac cutters, ripper teeth and much more. How do you ensure quality of your products? Swedish manufacturers have a reputation for quality and Engcon is no exception. All our products are built to cope with Scandinavian digging conditions, which are some of the toughest in the world. As standard, we provide a two-year warranty on all new products, which it is possible to extend up to five years at the point of sale. The construction industry is a hard market and you can have the best product in the world, but someone is going to try and break it, so it’s really

important to have the right service support and product backup. We have the largest network of service partners in the UK and Ireland and our inventory of finished goods and spare parts is unrivalled. Importantly, our control systems include overthe-air diagnostics using smartphone apps, which in many cases allows us to fix problems remotely. Where it is not possible and an engineer needs to make a service call, we know what’s wrong and the engineer will have the right part on his van. This saves the operator time and money while getting the excavator operational again in as little time as possible. How do you market your products? Not all tiltrotators are supplied on new machines. Our distribution is geared to handle dealer sales as well as direct sales to owner-operators who want to upgrade their existing machine. With a new machine, the buyer will often want to bundle the digger and the tilty into a single finance package provided by the dealer, but with older diggers we need to provide alternatives to suit all tastes. A year or so ago we launched Engcon Finance – the first tiltrotator manufacturer to offer such a service and the take-up has been fantastic. But before owners get to the stage where they’re ready to invest, they often want to try the product out so we host our own events, known as Big Dig Days. Here, operators have the chance to try out diggers equipped with tiltrotators and experience the innovation for themselves. The other important issue here is training. Since you have different licenses for different types of machine and given the fact that a tiltrotator radically changes the way a digger operates, we’ve gone a step further and developed a tiltrotator training course in conjunction with NPORS. We’ve deliberately made it a generic one rather than Engcon specific because we recognise that, while we may be the market leader, other brands are available and it’s important that operators have the chance to learn this new technology in a safe and controlled manner. Are you releasing any new products on the coming months? At Engcon, we’re constantly looking to innovate and bring new solutions to the market that add value to our customers. Our automatic hydraulic connections system, EC-Oil, has been
available for some years now, but this year we have made it a standard product. Being able to connect and disconnect hydraulic attachments automatically without leaving the cab in under 15 seconds is a game changer in the same way that an automatic quick hitch was a decade or so ago. However, hydraulic connection systems have traditionally been very expensive and not retrofittable. Because we make all our own stuff, we are able to counter this and the latest iteration of EC-Oil is now a standard on all our DC2-controlled twin hitch setups at no extra cost. We’ve taken it a stage further by introducing our new hoseless systems as well. Most systems use hoses to accommodate the differential movement within the hitch – the Engcon system doesn’t and this simplifies both fitting and maintenance as well as helping to
eliminate leakages and hose breaks. We also have a host of new attachments and control systems that we’ll be showcasing at this year’s Plantworx and at our Big Dig Days around the country. What’s the next step for the company? We sell 18,000 new excavators every year in this country, which creates a massive opportunity for us. Our business has grown enormously each year since we took over from our network of dealers and the constant challenge for us is to make sure that we can continue to manage this increase. Our Swedish parent group has just made a massive investment in our factories, which has quadrupled our capacity and the group continues to open new sales offices around the world.
