DIGGERS & DOZERS
What Happens in Vegas... According to the tired old adage trotted out by groups of businessmen determined to keep their Nevada excesses on the down-low, “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas”. In the world of construction equipment, however, what happens in Vegas pretty much sets the agenda for the direction of plant and equipment development for the entire world. In terms of size, ConExpo is today out-matched and outgunned by the behemoth that is Bauma. But with the likes of Caterpillar, Case, Terex and a multitude of other US-based manufacturers still treating the Vgas extravaganza as “their show”, ConExpo has lost none of its influence and allure. The sheer volume and diversity of equipment on display at the Las Vegas Convention Center (and please forgive the US spelling; that just how they prefer it!) makes it almost impossible to identify any specific theme from the show. But one thing is clear – Most major manufacturers worth their salt are staking their considerable reputations on a greater use of telematics, remote control and even autonomous equipment. In a predominantly plant hire-led industry like the UK, the use of telematics – and the perceived cost thereof – has a long way to go before it is considered the norm. But, like it or not, it’s coming.

Equipment dealerships, long required to have a nationwide network of expensive local depots employing lots of expensive staff, could easily monitor all the equipment they sell, despatching an engineer to fix a problem or even pre-empt that problem before it leads to costly downtime for the customer. The quicker plant hirers realise that the additional cost will be quickly outweighed by a significant reduction in unforeseen breakdowns, the better for the industry as a whole. We have tried to make our coverage of ConExpo as complete and as comprehensive as we possibly can. Undoubtedly, we have missed a few items along the way, but that’s probably just as well as the magazine barely fits through the letter-box as it is. We really hope you enjoy our coverage of the show. And speaking of enjoyment, make sure you check out our new series of “Snapshot” videos which are designed to give you the key facts on the hottest new equipment in just 30 seconds. DIGGERS & DOZERS
In the Swing Designed in the company’s engineering centre for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Dobris in the Czech Republic, the new DX10Z zero tail swing (ZTS) miniexcavator has been launched by Doosan.
The DX10Z is ideal for construction, rental, demolition, landscaping and any other applications that need high performance, compactness, comfort and stability in one machine. The DX10Z is truly compact and easy to transport, offering a width of only 710 mm when the tracks and the front blade are fully retracted, allowing the machine to pass through most doors. In addition, to make access to the job site even easier, a foldable TOPS (Tip Over Protective Structure) canopy meeting ISO 12117 requirements is standard on the model. The integral sliding blade extensions eliminate loose parts that require storage space and can be easily lost. The blade
4
extensions can simply be slid into their inner position to reduce the overall width. Whilst the DX10Z is very compact, there is no compromise on performance. Thanks to the design of the undercarriage, the DX10Z provides excellent lifting capacities for this size of excavator, combined with a maximum digging depth of 1.82 metres and a machine weight of 1,176 kg. With plenty of room for the operator’s legs, lower machine noise and variable-position joysticks, the DX10Z is a very easy machine to operate. The position of the joystick controls on the DX10Z can be adjusted to suit different operators. Both left and right consoles, which serve

as comfortable arm rests, need to be lowered and locked in order to operate the machine. Thanks to a standard second speed range, the DX10Z is able to move quickly around job sites, complete projects faster and work more efficiently.
hydraulics are routed inside the boom to prevent any damage when working. These two features enhance the machine’s durability. Particular attention has been made to ensure easy service access: with a single access point for the daily maintenance of the main components, for checking the fuel gauge and refuelling through the lockable cap.
The hydraulically expandable undercarriage provides the DX10Z with one of the widest stances in the mini-excavator segment. When it is extended, the width of the square footprint becomes 1100 mm, providing unsurpassed stability. The workgroup features a box structure design, providing strength while minimising the overall weight of the workgroup.
The DX10Z is powered by the Kubota D722 engine − one of the best known in the mini-excavator segment. This provides proven reliability, as well as low vibration and noise levels, which are a must when working in confined areas.
As a true ZTS mini-excavator, the offset tail swing of the DX10Z provides the operator with full confidence so that they can fully concentrate on the job at hand. The use of metal covers and a large cast counterweight provide excellent corner protection and extra durability.
The cooling system delivers best-in-class performance − which is critical when working in spacially restricted areas where air flow may be minimal. When the machine is frequently used with a hydraulic breaker, the ‘demolition kit’ provides extra cooling so the breaker can be used continuously, even in warm environments. This is unique in the market, and makes this model ideal for indoor demolition projects.
The workgroup of the DX10Z excavator features a cylinder-over-boom design, so that the cylinder cannot be damaged. The hoses for the auxiliary

perimeter maintenance of facilities such as schools and military bases; to site development in construction; land clearing for landscaping and recreation projects; maintenance work on vegetation next to pathways and other right-of-ways, utilities, railway lines and roads as well as clean-up work after storms and floods. The FRC150HT and FRC200HT replace the previous models in the range and, based on customer feedback, they have been enhanced with a new variable torque motor providing 40% more power and several other updates to improve performance. The latter include a new drum design, new routing for the hoses, a reduction in weight, improved visibility and much more, increasing efficiency and improving manoeuvrability. The forestry cutters are part of the comprehensive Bobcat range of attachments for forestry, estate management, amenity and landscaping work, which includes stump grinders, wood chippers, brushcutters, flail cutters, augers and tree transplanters. Powered by the new M-BOOST high
skid shoes; an automatic drum brake system; an ACD Control system and a patented fixed knife rotor with tungsten carbide tips. To ensure safe operation of the forestry cutters on loaders, the Forestry Applications Kit protects the loader and operator from flying objects and debris. The Kit includes an impact resistant front door, which must be installed in order to operate the forestry cutter. A safety feature stops the cutter drum from turning if the loader door is opened. For work in confined spaces in woodland and forests, front and rear light guards are added to the loader to protect the lights. A guard protects the hydraulic quick couplers, hoses and wire harness from falling trees and branches. A level II FOPS (ISO 3449) protects the operator and the cab from falling trees and objects, while top and rear polycarbonate windows provide additional protection for the operator. Shields protect the lift cylinders against debris and help to reduce material build-up in the engine compartment. Although daily maintenance is essential in this type of work, a debris screen on the radiator ensures continuous operation and makes cleaning up easier. All functions of the forestry cutters can be fingertip controlled from the operator seat without requiring the operator to remove their hand from the loader steering levers. The forestry cutters have a hydraulically-adjustable front gate that can be opened while cutting debris and then closed to retain material and provide a fine mulching action.

Warwick Ward (machinery) Ltd. was founded in 1970 by Mr Warwick Ward and has grown into the largest stockist and supplier of new & used wheel loaders, earthmoving equipment, waste recycling equipment and spare parts in Europe. Over 200 good working loading shovels of all makes and models are
always available and over 7,000 machines have been dismantled for spare parts. The family connection is still very much in evidence today. Warwick’s son’s Ashley and Matthew, both now with over 25 years service themselves at Warwick Ward, have since the year 2000 been running the company and the growth since that time has been considerable with turnover increasing to seven times the volume it was when they took over the reins from their father. The company has grown from strength to strength and continues to expand. Expansion and diversity In addition to the existing used equipment business the company became a fully authorised CASE construction equipment dealer in 2006. Within a very short space of time we established ourselves as one of the best performing CASE construction equipment dealers in the UK, offering the full range of new CASE equipment,
products and services. In 2011 we achieved the accolade of being awarded the CASE European dealer of the year in the category of wheel loader sales - a very proud moment for the company. CASE has a long association in the construction, earthmoving and material handling sectors and is well renowned within the industry for manufacturing machines with excellent reliability, build quality and strong resale values. Since the commencement of our partnership with CASE we have year on year increased CASE market share in our designated dealer areas and our market share continues to grow. In 2015 we became the official Ecohog Windshifters Sole UK & Ireland distributor. In 2016 another exciting development at Warwick Ward took place with the acquisition of the TEREX Environmental Equipment franchise. We are now a UK distributor for the full TEREX Ecotec Range. The partnership with TEREX & Ecohog was in many ways a natural progression for us, as we already have very close relations with many companies large and small operating in the waste recycling sector through our connections with both CASE and our longstanding used equipment division - indeed this sector of industry has for some years now been our strongest market. The addition of TEREX & Ecohog to our portfolio has further strengthened our position within the waste sector and we have now established very strong working relationships with many of the UK’s largest waste recycling companies. The philosophy of Warwick Ward is, and has always been, to offer excellent value for money without sacrificing quality and service. We aim to offer earthmoving equipment to suit any application and any budget. From the smallest equipment requirements to the largest wheel loaders, there can be no greater variety and choice than at our one mile long site situated in Barnsley, England. Warwick Ward is a name synonymous with great value and quality in the field of wheel loaders, earthmoving equipment and spare parts.

Overby and Out The Thomas Armstrong Group has taken delivery of its 25th Terex Finlay machine from Finlay Plant Northern.
A new Terex Finlay 390 Hydrascreen is the latest addition to the fleet, which is being used by the Group to process sand at its Overby Quarry site in Wigton, Cumbria – one of the two sand quarries the company operates in the North West. In a partnership spanning 35 years, The Thomas Armstrong Group has worked closely with Finlay Plant Northern – part of the Finlay Group of companies – to introduce the best plant on site geared up to their exact needs.

The Thomas Armstrong Group has over 180 years’ experience in construction services and the manufacture of building products and Martyn Cueto, the Group’s quarry manager, says that the reason the company keeps going back to Finlay Plant Northern is based on the top-quality products and service they receive. “The machines we’ve had from Finlay Plant Northern are great, some of them now are over 15 years old and they’re still in operation, seven days a week, 10 hours a day,” Cueto

Lumsden & Carroll in TripliCat
Lumsden & Carroll Construction has purchased three Cat 428F2 Backhoe Loaders in its first deal with Finning UK & Ireland. Based in the north-east of England, and part of Lumsden & Carroll Engineering and ESH Group, Lumsden & Carroll Construction has, for the first time in 25 years, purchased a Cat machine. With a committed focus on machine quality and service capabilities, the team at Lumsden & Carroll commenced conversations with Finning regarding the Cat Backhoe Loaders.
“We had very specific requirements; we needed a machine that was of a high quality, that would run without issues and reduced down-time. All in all, a better built machine that is reliable. The Cat Backhoe Loaders definitely seem to be meeting our requirements,” says Phil Basset, Workshop Foreman at Lumsden & Carroll Construction. “We’re very pleased with our new relationship with Cat; a very credible and premium brand in my opinion. However, it’s not just the quality of machine that we needed, it’s the service quality and overall capabilities that are a major factor with us. During our visit to Caterpillar at Desford, we spent four to five hours with the Service team and other members of the Cat and Finning team. Together, we built a package and agreement that was best suited to us. “I believe the service capabilities from Finning was echoed when we had an issue with a coupler on one of the machines. The team were out to see us within 40 minutes and the problem was resolved straight away. Of course we’re bound to experience a few difficulties, it goes with the territory, but the response time and professionalism of the Finning team gives us a great deal of confidence and assurance. We will surely be looking to expand our Caterpillar fleet in the future.”
Following a demonstration of the machines, Finning discussed options with Lumsden & Carroll and supplied three of the Cat 428F2 Backhoe Loaders, following preferred operator preferences such as the mechanical controls. The machine is powered by the efficient Cat C4.4 engine and accompanied by a seamless 6-speed auto-shift transmission with lock-up torque converter. The machine also includes ‘Deluxe Cab’ facilities, including air conditioning, heated air suspension, Bluetooth integrated radio and CD player, and an incredibly quiet operating environment. As this was a big move for Lumsden & Carroll, Finning UK & Ireland invited the team to Caterpillar’s base in Desford to see their machines being built, and actually moving through the production line.

Redefining “Fit for Purpose” When it comes to selecting waste and recycling machines, ‘Fit for Purpose’ no longer means just lifting. David Banks, Sales Manager - Waste & Recycling Sector at JCB, offers a deeper definition.
The waste and recycling industry is a tough business that puts machines through their paces. Naturally, a machine will need to be ‘Fit For Purpose’. But what does that mean exactly? Obviously a machine should be able to lift, place, or shift materials. But being fit for purpose in the modern waste and recycling facility requires much more. The broad range of tasks that machines are expected to perform every day in these sites has evolved – as have user expectations of the machines’ capabilities to deliver a successful operation. Machines must be designed to meet these requirements, working in facilities that are
generally operating long hours, handling increasing volumes, are open to the elements and are occupied by a mix of staff and visitors. Only by fulfilling the following key purposes, will a machine fulfil the expectations of a waste and recycling site. Increasing Efficiency Efficiency is the first key purpose – with economical fuel consumption being a prime factor. A fuel-efficient machine will contribute to your profitability while also providing a cleaner environment to work in. The power unit, being the heart of the machine, is the key to fuel efficiency: the right power unit should meet the latest emissions regulations and deliver fuel consumption savings without sacrificing the top quality performance. Not an easy task in an environment where the jobs are getting tougher. Power coming from an engine that meets Stage IV/Tier 4 Final is a major contributing factor to a machine’s fitness for purpose. Aimed at reducing the hazardous exhaust emissions of new vehicles sold in the EU and North America, these are latest stage of the engine emissions regulations, which apply to off-highway machines.

Clean engine technology can also help performance and reduce maintenance, which will minimise downtime. The JCB EcoMax Stage IV/ Tier 4 Final engine range for example, requires no Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) to meet the latest standards. With no DPF components to maintain and service, operating costs are reduced. In addition, a lack of bulky DPF components results in a smaller engine package, hence a more effective machine design. Productivity Purpose Having the right machine for exactly the right application will fulfil the productivity purpose – machines designed for specific applications will be able to maximise productivity through seamless operation. Waste and recycling sites are harsh environments, presenting a challenge for any machine; this makes it essential to get a machine that has been designed for the job.
The Ecomax engine has been recalibrated to achieve the engine out emissions requirement resulting in a further five percent fuel saving. A compact selective catalytic reduction unit with a urea-based additive is used on engines above 55 kW and is incorporated into a single exhaust muffler, in many cases replacing the existing exhaust. This provides a ‘one can’ solution, delivering the same compact overall dimensions for machine designers. The technology is used across most of JCB’s 35-strong Wastemaster range.
For example, JCB’s 457 Wastemaster is designed to work in high output transfer stations and

materials recovery facilities, where large volumes of material need to be handled. Typically the machine will be used to load hoppers and trucks and stockpile MSW (Municipal Solid Waste) and other recyclables.
Whether it is loose materials or large containers; hazardous substances or heavy machinery; slips, trips or falls, there’s a lot of potential danger at waste and recycling sites. Manufacturers of machines play a vital role in helping to increase safety for employees and visitors to sites through the design and development of new machinery. There are many protection features that can enhance operator safety and minimise any damage to machines, even when working in harsh environments. To fulfil the purpose of contributing to a safe site, the machine used on that site should be designed to provide excellent operator visibility, vehicle visibility, access, operator comfort, operator protection, lighting and technology.
Where there are operations such as loading and unloading of trailers that need to be carried out in confined spaces – there’s the JCB 35D 4x4 Wastemaster Plus Teletruk. Its ability to reach forwards to lift and place loads quickly and safely allow operators can load and unload delivery trucks from one side – trumping the traditional forklift truck often used in this application, saving up to 50% of yard loading space and allowing them to drive right inside shipping containers. Of course there are many other jobs that require different types of machine – the array of which is highlighted by the fact that JCB has 35 different vehicles to handle different tasks in its Wastemaster fleet. When selecting a fleet of vehicles to carry out different tasks on a single site or a collection of sites, it makes sense to source all of the machines from the same supplier. This will simplify finance, maintenance and even provide a uniform visual appearance. A supplier should therefore offer a broad range that can offer a choice of vehicle to deliver optimum output to the last available kilogram of waste material. A bespoke build for each individual machine should also be offered to the customer to ensure the machine meets their recycling and waste handling needs precisely.
Reporting In Telematics provides complete assurance and reporting on the things that matter most, thus ensuring that the machine can continue to be fit for purpose on a daily, weekly, monthly basis. Reporting through telematics ensures maximum uptime by understanding when there are faults that need to be rectified, when services are due, or identifying inadequacies in performance. There are further productivity gains that can be made through better management information and performance monitoring. Fleet managers and owners have remote access to real-time fuel consumption and machine working data – including operating hours and fault codes. Having the ability to ‘geo-fence’ your investment using Telematics, ensures you are notified in real time
Safety Counts Contributing to a safe working environment is an essential purpose for any machine used in waste and recycling. There should be zero compromise in safety in terms of the machine’s design. This means constantly examining ways to take into account every potential eventuality, and leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit of complete safety and comfort for everyone within the work place.

should a machine leave a predetermined area. This provides assurance that the equipment is being used in accordance with the tasks set out.
These check points provide an outline guide to consider whether a machine will be fit for purpose to work in a waste and recycling site. The best way to assess these points, and see if the machine really is fit for purpose, is to try out a unit as well as alternative machine options. After all, you wouldn’t buy a car without taking it for test drive, so why make that investment without knowing the machines could do the job?
Telematics that incorporates a tracking system will help protect the investment in the machines on a waste and recycling site. JCB’s LiveLink, for example, shows the location of a machine and has helped recover over £3 million of stolen JCB equipment.
Big Apple Logistics is a freight forwarder specialising in heavy machinery movements.
Unrealistic schedules/Prices: Customers all over the world stressed that they had been offered prices for a shipment but when it became time to ship, the vessels were full, causing the shipper to either wait for unacceptable amounts of time or ship with a more expensive line that did have space. Again, this lead to problems with budgeting for the shipment and caused issues with the customer waiting for the machinery to be delivered.
They can offer solutions that you may never have considered, saving you time and money, making the export of your plant machinery stress free.
Poor Customer Service: A lot of the larger forwarders send out a sales guy to meet the customer and then hand you over to somebody else to get your prices and then another person to book the shipment. Customers found this frustrating and just wanted one point of contact available 24/7 on one telephone number. They were also frustrated that the people running their shipments had no real-life experience of the machinery or the ports/shipping lines being used. Some operation clerks had never even been to the main shipping ports in the UK and had no idea of the unique problems that come with each different type of plant machinery.
Big Apple Logistics is the brainchild of Managing Director Pete Bunyan who has worked at some of the largest international freight forwarders in the world. It is Pete’s intention to provide a service unlike that of any other freight forwarder. A personalised service tailored to your individual needs. They don’t try and fit square pegs into round holes. During his twenty years in plant & plant logistics; something that Pete noticed was that no matter where in the world he was, no matter what customer he was talking to about any type of machinery movement there were a few common denominators:
It is Pete’s intention to ensure that none of this happens to you as a customer. If you want to talk to somebody that has been shipping heavy plant around the world for a long time and can offer you a price based on your specific needs rather than what works for the shipping line, give Pete a call.
Hidden Extras: The exact costs and responsibilities of the shipper were not explained to the customer clearly, meaning that customers always ended up paying more than they planned for, making effective budget control nearly impossible. They also found other companies quotes full of jargon and hard to understand.
The customer comes first at Big Apple Logistics.

Volvo Continues E-volution Volvo Construction Equipment presented the HX2 autonomous, batteryelectric, load carrier at ConExpo 2017.
The second-generation concept machine is part of an electric site research project that aims to transform the quarry and aggregates industry, by reducing carbon emissions by up to 95% and total cost of ownership by up to 25%. Volvo CE showcased the firstgeneration of the prototype HX machine, known as HX1, at the company’s Xploration Forum in September last year. Since then, Volvo CE’s engineers have been developing the machine. And while it may still look similar on the outside, it’s completely different on the inside. “The HX2 is fundamentally different to the HX1,” says
30
Chief Project Manager Uwe Müller. “The HX1 was proof of concept. Once we knew it was feasible we updated the design requirements for the HX2 to incorporate shared technologies and components from the Volvo Group, such as electric motors, batteries and power electronics. Integrating a completely new drivetrain was crucial to take full advantage of the groundbreaking ‘electromobility’ developments that are happening inside the Volvo Group. Another new feature is the addition of a vision system, which allows the machine to detect humans and obstacles in its vicinity.” As well as a small fleet of HX2s, other prototype machines

this, Volvo CE will examine the project results to see if the concept is viable for the industry. Currently this work is just a research project, with no plans for industrialisation at this stage. “Volvo CE is committed to pushing boundaries and exploring the technology of the future,” says Director of emerging technologies Jenny Elfsberg. “The HX2 and the electric site project demonstrate how Volvo CE wants to work with its customers early in the development phase to improve total site performance and sustainability, while also saving customers money. By integrating customers in the development process, we can design the best solution for a task, application and environment together. The concepts being developed in the electric site research project are part of Volvo CE’s long-term future vision, and they have the potential to transform the quarry and aggregates industry. By using electricity instead of diesel to power construction equipment in a quarry, we have the potential to deliver significant reductions in fuel consumption, CO2 emissions, environmental impact and cost-per-tonne. The electrification of construction equipment will produce cleaner, quieter and more efficient machines – this represents the future of our industry.”
Volvo CE teamed up with its customer Skanska Sweden, the Swedish Energy Agency and two Swedish universities – Linköping University and Mälardalen University – in October 2015 to collaborate on the SEK 203 million project. Volvo CE is coordinating the project and is in charge of developing the machines and systems. Skanska Sweden is providing logistical solutions, application relevance and job site knowledge. The Swedish Energy Agency – a government agency for national energy policy issues – is helping to fund the project and the universities are carrying out research. Two PhD students are looking at battery aging and energy management for electric vehicles, as well as functional safety. Skanska Sweden will incorporate the demonstration machines into its operations and test the electric site concept at a quarry in western Sweden for 10 weeks at the end of 2018. After

JCB Unveils Teleskid JCB used the ConExpo show to preview the world’s first skid steer and compact track loader with a telescopic boom.
The JCB Teleskid can reach 60 percent further forward than any other skid steer on the market and – in an industry first – it is the only skid steer in the world that can dig below its chassis to an unparalleled depth of around one metre. In addition, this innovative new machine can reach eight percent higher than any other skid steer. “Through innovation this machine will surpass the expectations of our customers as the world’s first skid steer and compact track loader with a telescopic boom,” says JCB Chief Innovation and Growth

Officer Tim Burnhope. “The JCB Teleskid can reach further forward and lift higher and dig deeper than any other skid steer.” JCB pioneered telescopic technology with the launch of the Loadall nearly 40 years ago and today it’s the biggest selling telescopic handler in the world. Nearly 25 years ago JCB also introduced another innovation: the industry’s first single-arm – or ‘Powerboom’ – skid steer, taking safety to new levels. Now the company has taken its drive for innovative product solutions a stage further by combining both technologies

into one to produce the JCB Teleskid: a skid steer and track loader complete with a telescopic boom.
and maintained throughout the boom’s range of movement.
The JCB Teleskid has an unrivalled forward reach of 2.4 metres. With a lift height of four metres, the JCB Teleskid can reach eight percent higher than any other skid steer in the world.
The JCB Teleskid will feature a fully enclosed cab that is 33 percent larger than industry average, and JCB’s myCHOICE software, allowing control responsiveness and joystick sensitivity to be tailored to suit operator preferences. A 55 kW JCB Ecomax engine will provide high torque at a low RPM and ensure compliance with Tier 4 Final / Stage IIIB emissions standards.
“The JCB Teleskid can do the work of four machines – a telescopic handler, masted forklift, compact loader and a skid steer, all in one easily-serviced machine,” Burnhope adds. “The telescopic boom will allow operators to load trucks without a ramp, reach over kerbing and dig below ground, all with clear visibility of the attachment.”
Tracked and wheeled Teleskid models will be sold in North America, while European markets will be offered the wheeled variant which is most popular in that region.
The JCB Teleskid will be on the only skid steer on the market which is able to combine vertical and radial lift capability. A unique bucket-positioning levelling system allows the bucket level to be set

Rammer’s Biggest Just Got Better Visitors to the ConExpo exhibition were the first to see the latest version of Rammer’s largest hydraulic hammer. Called the Rammer 9033, the new model replaces the highly successful Rammer 7013 and benefits from a number of key changes and improvements, many of which have been proven in smaller Rammer hammers. These improvements include: • A 20 percent wider carrier weight range than the Rammer 7013 • A 22 percent higher input power which significantly increases impact rate and productivity compared to its predecessor.
These improvements have been achieved by equipping the new Rammer 9033 with many of the key features recently applied to other models in the Rammer Large and Medium ranges. ”Our engineers have applied lessons learned on other hammer models to place this Rammer hammer at the very top of its class,” says Rammer’s general manager Rafa López. “The Rammer 9033 completes the successful Rammer Large hammers family by replacing the aged 7013 with a modern

design that extends some of the specifications such as carrier range allowed and tool diameter.”
overpressure, enhances hammer’s reliability, and offers improved protection against oil spills.
Weighing in at 7,000 kg, the new Rammer 9033 is suitable for carriers in the 60 to 120 tonnes operating weight range. Impact rate on the long stroke setting rises from a maximum of 450 blows per minute to 520, while maximum oil flow rises to 460 litres per minute against the 400 litres per minute on the Rammer 7013. Input power is up from 113 to 138 kW, a rise of 22 percent.
To further extend the working life of the Rammer 9033 it is offered with three greasing options: a centralised manual option; carrier-mounted Ramlube I automatic greasing; or Ramlube II, which utilises a cartridge mounted on the hammer to automatically deliver optimum levels of lubrication for greater wear protection and a longer service life. The new model also comes equipped with Rammer’s Ramdata II service indicator that allows operators and service personnel to monitor and log vital service and maintenance information to further minimise downtime.
Stroke length and Idle Blow Protection can be easily adjusted to allow the Rammer 9033 to be purpose-matched to individual applications. The long stroke setting uses a lower blow frequency for optimum breaking in hard materials, such as granite and reinforced concrete foundations, while the short stroke setting delivers higher blow frequency which is ideal for softer materials, such as limestone. The Idle Blow Protector on/off selector allows the operator to easily adjust the working mode to protect against idle strokes.

Like the other models in Rammer’s Large Range of hydraulic hammers, the new 9033 is designed for a long, trouble-free life. The new model utilises long-life, high-tension VIDAT tie rods for improved reliability and lower operating costs. The tool-retaining pins are locked by simple, reliable rubber rings, while the surface of the lower tool bushing has been specifically designed to provide longer tool life.
Plant & Liability Insurance From sole machine operators to national plant hirers.
The Rammer 9033 also becomes the latest (and final) model in the Rammer Large Range to benefit from the addition of the Ramvalve overflow protection system. The Ramvalve monitors the oil flow through the hammer. If the oil flow exceeds the pre-defined setting, the valve adjusts the flow to a very low level and drops the hammer’s impact rate. The Ramvalve resets after the hammer re-starts with a correct oil flow. This highly effective system provides excellent protection against accidental overflowing and

Mud, mud....not so glorious mud Nothing quite like it for giving you a headache. With our climate we tend to make lots of it on construction sites, landfill sites and quarries and the law states that we have to prevent as much of it as possible from contaminating the site exits where it is not only unsightly but can cause a hazard to the traffic and pedestrians. So what are the options available for dealing with it?
shouldn’t be such an important part of your project has brought it to a frustrating standstill.
Road sweepers spring to mind of course, but they’re not cheap to hire; also they can be very disruptive to traffic and they can chuck out a lot of exhaust emissions, so increasing your site’s carbon footprint and destroying your environmental credentials.
The DriveOn V-Tech waterless wheel cleaning system from Ecogreen Plant Hire Ltd is a raised grid, but has very little surface area – around 60% less than a conventional rumble strip. The transverse bars that vehicle wheels go across are just 30mm wide and spaced at 220mm, but they will take a 50 ton load. The mud that comes off the vehicle wheels (through vibration, centrifugal force and flexing of the tyre) doesn’t sit on the surface, but falls into the void below, and because the system is modular and has no nuts and bolts (it simply sleeves together), when the 3 cubic metre void fills up it is simply lifted section by section and scraped out.
Any system that uses water, be it bath, wash/spray or simply “man-with-lance” can be effective to a point, but they are often self defeating as they tend to make more mud! And the costs of provision and disposal of the water, of hiring bowser, pump, generator, lance, sludge reservoir, all mount up. Wet systems always create a smear for road sweepers to deal with, so yet more cost. They can (and do!) clog up, break down, contaminate water courses and freeze up in winter and then something which really

“We have had a DriveOn V-Tech system for 22 weeks and only had to use a road sweeper 3 times, and this is a very challenging site”. Gentoo Site Manager. “The waterless wheel wash system was an excellent solution. After complaints by local residents we installed the dry wheel clean units and found them to drastically reduce muck and debris being transferred to the public highway. I will definitely be looking to use these again on future projects.” Project Buyer, Costain. With such a lucrative range of attachments we quickly and easily managed to roll out a large dealer network throughout the UK and Ireland that offers both great visibility throughout the UK but with great local knowledge from the dealers. As the attachment side became busier and busier over the years we quickly had to put into place new staff that could understand the markets and more importantly the products and be able to cope with the high demand. Very quickly Dennis Kerrigan came to join the team after working to the last 6 years at Astra Site Services (one of the largest attachment hire companies in the UK and the key training manager for all the engineers at Astra). We have been delighted with him ever since!

IN THE PIPELINE Liebherr presented its first generation 6 pipelayer at Conexpo 2017. The new RL 56 Litronic provides a lifting capacity of 72 tonnes and cis powered by a state of the art diesel engine that complies with Tier 4f /Stage IV emissions standards. Designed as a successor to the company’s
The robust Liebherr diesel engines operate at constant low 1.800 rpm, a very economical speed. This feature reduces fuel consumption, is important for a long component life of the engine, and combined with the demand controlled hydraulic cooling system it keeps the noise level to a minimum. Additionally, the Generation 6 pipelayers come with the selectable ECO-mode, a fuel-efficiency control system developed by Liebherr to optimize the engine speed if full output is not required.
popular Feneration 4 models, this new Generation 6 pipelayer – RL 56 – is driven by a Tier 4f Liebherr Diesel engine with an engine output of 210 kW (SAE J 1349). For this engine generation, the entire combustion process has been optimised to minimise the particulates within the engine. The innovative Selective Catalytic Reduction technology (SCR) means no Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is required. The ease of maintenance and low fuel consumption are a few of the resulting customer benefits.

of gravity for the machine. Through use of the extra-long undercarriage, Liebherr pipelayers offer maximum stability, especially on inclines.
Liebherr oils and lubricants are specially formulated for the harsh operating conditions of pipelayers. The special properties of these oils make the new RL 56 have exceptionally long change intervals for operating fluids. Depending on the nature of the work, and provided that regular quality checks are performed, the hydraulic fluid change interval can be as long as 8,000 hours of operation. These features keep the service and maintenance costs low.
A hydraulically powered winch permits step less and precise speed control of the load hook. The load is lowered reliably without any loss of force. As soon as the winch stops moving, the automatic safety brake is activated and holds the load securely. The very precise control of the boom and winch ensures that the pipe is placed with millimeter accuracy – this is a major benefit when connecting pipes during preassembly as well as when repairing the pipeline.
In combination with the innovative hydrostatic travel drive, the powerful Liebherr diesel engine provides maximum power in every situation. Whether transporting pipe on soft soil, lowering the pipeline when travelling uphill, or when pulling heavy pipe-bending machines – the hydrostatic travel drive reliably provides the required power.
All Liebherr pipelayers are based on a well thought-out safety concept that sets standards in pipeline construction. The cabs come with integrated rollover protection as a standard. Convenient and good visibility to the working area is guaranteed. The precise and infinite speed control without gear shifting of the Liebherr driveline ensures safe transportation of the

load. The standard tilting operator cab provides fast and easy access to all important components of the travel drive and hydraulics. Instead of a second winch, Liebherr installs a boom cylinder on all pipelayer models. This cylinder is maintenance free and also prevents unintentional folding of the boom in critical situations. This concept also eliminates the risk of an over-pull of the boom as it is with a boom winch system. The boom cylinder also features hose break protection that prevents lowering of the boom in the event of pipe breakage. Further measures to guarantee maximum operator safety include a standard free fall device of the lifting winch. An optional overload warning device with automatic power cutoff helps the operator anticipate critical load situations. If the machine approaches the permissible load limit, automatic load-sensing power cutoff prevents further load-increasing motions.
concept requires only minimum training – another important safety feature. All instruments and operating controls are user-friendly. The RL 56 features a touch-controlled system display. The touch screen is the interface for a new control architecture of modular construction and capable of almost unlimited extension. The additional display options include reversing cameras or other functions for extra convenience. The operator’s seat has been angled 15° to the left toward the boom. This gives the operator the best view of the load being moved, and of the other pipelayers working in the column ahead and behind. Liebherr offers a powerful coolant-based heating system that – when used in conjunction with the optional air-conditioning system – creates a comfortable environment.

The hydrostatic travel drive allows the operator to maneuver the machine easily and with maximum precision even on steep slopes. The safety brake (parking brake) opens and closes automatically, preventing the machine from rolling on inclines. The working environment of Liebherr pipelayers offers exceptional operator comfort. The generous space, acoustically insulated and ergonomically designed cab provides the perfect conditions for fatigue-free and concentrated work. Outstanding visibility simplifies safe and precise movement of load as well. Operating joysticks, one for the boom with winch and one for the entire travel drive can be controlled precisely – including the “counterrotation“ function. The logical operating
