DIGGERS & DOZERS
Let the Show Commence By the time you read this, PlantworX 2017 will be upon us and the industry will have a better grasp on what the future holds in terms of both equipment and technology and sentiment and confidence.
EDITORIAL Mark Anthony - Mark Anthony Publicity markanthony@markanthonypublicity.co.uk 07973 456 166
This year’s show comes at an opportune time. The calling of a snap election and ongoing concerns over the type of Brexit we each might inherit has unquestionably dented overall construction confidence. According to the latest statistics from market intelligence provider The Builders’ Conference, new contract awards were down by 25 percent in May 2017 compared to the previous month.
SALES Sales Director Ben Chambers ben@chambers.media 01903 899942
That said, the construction equipment industry remains bullish, its confidence buoyed by the promise of HS2 and a multitude of other high profile projects that are bubbling away on the Government’s back-burner. And that plant-related positivity will fill the aisles of the Bruntingthorpe proving ground, with each visitor eager to see the shape of plant fleets to come. The Construction Equipment Association deserve enormous credit for the creation of PlantworX. Following the untimely demise of SED, the UK plant sector was crying out for a dedicated equipment show worthy of taking up the mantle. Despite launching at the tail-end of the recession, PlantworX arrived on a tide of positivity. And the show, now in its third incarnation, has ridden that positivity ever since.

Anyone associated with the UK construction equipment industry will be hoping (praying) that this will continue into and beyond the latest show. As an industry, we have previously proved adept at talking ourselves into recession. But with the last global downturn still fresh in the memories of many, it is vital that we accentuate the positive whilst remaining mindful of the potential negative. We cannot afford to allow doubts over the General Election or the uncertain shape of a post-Brexit UK to dent our hard-fought confidence.

Breedon Backs Doosan Breedon Group plc, the largest independent construction materials group in the UK, has purchased new Doosan DL550-5 and DL450-5 Stage IV wheel loaders for two of the company’s operations in Scotland at Edzell Quarry near Brechin and Tom’s Forest Quarry in Kintore, respectively. The new Doosan wheel loaders were supplied by Inverurie-based Balgownie Ltd, the local Authorised Doosan and Bobcat dealer.

Breedon’s strategy is to continue growing through consolidation of the UK heavyside building materials sector. In August 2016, the company completed its largest acquisition to date: the £336 million purchase of Hope Construction Materials, a leading

independent producer of cement, cementitious products, aggregates and ready-mixed concrete. Following the acquisition of Hope, Breedon Group operates as three autonomous divisions. Breedon Southern and Breedon Northern are both fullyintegrated aggregates businesses with extensive networks of quarries, ready-mixed concrete and asphalt plants and well-established surfacing and contracting operations. Hope Cement is the UK’s only independent producer of cement and cementitious products, with the largest cement plant in the UK, two cement importation terminals and national reach through an extensive rail network and strategically located local depots.
The DL550-5 and DL450-5 are powered by the Scania DC13 6-cylinder engine producing 283 kW (380 HP) and 257 kW (354 HP) of power, respectively, at 1800 rpm. Providing generous torque at low rpm, up to a 10% reduction in fuel consumption and excellent response, the Scania DC13 engine meets Stage IV emission regulations without the need of a diesel particulate filter (DPF), through the use of cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and selective catalyst reduction (SCR) after-treatment technologies.
Bob Hare, Regional Production Manager Breedon Northern, said: “Both of these quarries are very busy operations, placing big demands on the equipment we purchase for material handling applications. Both of the new Doosan wheel loaders are used to load and stockpile the large quantities of materials produced by the quarries’ crushing & screening equipment. They are also kept busy filling the material bins used to supply the ready-mixed concrete systems at the quarries.”
In both models, the engine Auto Idle system when activated saves further on fuel costs by lowering the idle level from 950 to 750 rpm – when the operator does not give any input to the steering wheel, arm and bucket for more than 10 seconds (ideal for applications where there is a lot of waiting time such as truck loading). In all DL-5 loaders, the Engine Auto Shut Off shuts down the machine after it has been idling for a specified amount of time (3-60 minutes, configurable by the operator via the control panel). This feature saves on fuel and reduces operating costs.

Kubota Jumps GAP Kubota, the UK’s leading manufacturer of compact plant machinery, has enhanced its partnership with GAP Hire Solutions by becoming its sole supplier of excavators ranging from 0.8 to 8 tonnes. The Glasgow-based hire company, part of GAP Group, has been providing plant hire equipment for over 48 years and employs more than 1,600 people across 130 depots in the UK, cementing its position as the UK’s leading independent equipment hirer. With GAP Hire Solutions purchasing 900 machines from Kubota in 2016, becoming a sole supplier was seen as the logical next step in the partnership.
we can carry out day-to-day business without the worry of them breaking down or needing drastic maintenance. “As well as the impressive aesthetic aspects of the Kubota’s, the underlying mechanics of the machines are fantastic and the residual value is the best on the market to date. One feature of the excavators that stand out is the sheer power and strength of the engines. They’re virtually bullet proof and many of the other pieces of equipment we work with, such as dumpers, also run on Kubota diesel engines.”
GAP Hire Solutions will gradually replace all competitor machinery until Kubota is the exclusive supplier of its micro and mini equipment, such is the demand for the brand. The agreement will result in GAP Hire Solutions becoming Kubota’s number one construction customer worldwide and emphasises its trust in the performance and reliability of Kubota machines.
Due to industry trends evolving, GAP Hire Solutions has made the move to focus on the 8 tonne excavator weight category based on the versatility of the machines and the compact size but improved power capabilities. This has been reflected by the recent order GAP Hire Solutions has made to increase its Kubota fleet by another 300 machines.
“Over the last 40 plus years we’ve built a great relationship with Kubota and after purchasing such a huge quantity of excavators last year, we felt this exclusive agreement would be immensely beneficial to both parties as we move forward,” says Iain Anderson, Managing Director at GAP Hire Solutions. “To have a supplier that supports us in the way Kubota does is fantastic, which is why this decision was any easy one to make. The reliability of the machines ensures
“The fact that GAP Hire Solutions is now Kubota’s biggest construction customer worldwide says everything about the strength of our relationship with them,” concludes Dave Roberts, Managing Director of Kubota. “It’s a pleasure to partner with a great company like GAP Group and we’re delighted to continue as the sole supplier of excavators for the foreseeable future.”

Och Aye the New
28-tonne Terex Trucks TA300 hauler finds favour at Scottish barite mine Barhaul has purchased a new 28-tonne capacity TA300 articulated dump truck for use in a barite mine near Aberfeldy in Perthshire, Scotland.
Easily identified due to its high specific gravity and derived from the Greek word ‘barus’, meaning heavy, barite is the naturally occurring mineral form of barium sulphate. Due to its density, the environmentally friendly material is suitable for a wide range of industrial, manufacturing and medical uses. More than 75% of barite is used as an additive for drilling mud in gas and oil exploration – with the USA, Middle East, and China as the largest consumers.
Supplied by Terex Trucks’ UK distributor, TDL Equipment, the TA300 has consistently impressed Barhaul with its ability to power through the harshest environments. John Black, sales director at TDL Equipment, explains: “Over the years, Barhaul has regularly purchased Terex Trucks’ TA300 articulated haulers, as the company has a very good history with both the product and TDL in terms of our ability to support the product when required.”
Not classified as hazardous waste, barite is particularly beneficial to drilling muds as it can be applied to deep, high-temperature wells. Here it prevents damage to the tools used during the drilling process, serving as a lubricant to improve mud displacement and stabilizing high-pressure zones by increasing the weight of the slurry, thereby averting blowouts. The mineral also has the ability to shield x-ray and gamma-ray emissions, acts as a weighted filler for
Fitted with a tailgate and reverse colour camera, the versatile machine is currently carrying out a number of jobs for Barhaul, one of which involves handling material removed from a barite mine that is owned by the world’s largest oilfield services company, Schlumberger.

combination with engine exhaust brake support the fully-enclosed oil-cooled multidisc brakes for enhanced protection of the brakes, resulting in less maintenance and a longer life span for the brakes.
“Barite is an extremely dense material so it requires a robust and reliable vehicle to do the work of moving it around in the mine – it’s not an easy life for any truck,” says Black.
Black asserts: “The Barhaul order for the TA300, which was to replace an existing unit, was delivered straight to the site and is carrying out the work it was purchased for. Alongside the sale coming with a short lead time, Barhaul’s decision to remain with the brand was influenced by the level of quick responses received from the manufacturer and dealer no matter the request.
Set to make for the perfect collaboration between machine and mineral, the TA300 is a proven design and has the capability to overcome the most demanding conditions and move material as quickly as possible due to its excellent traction and effective power-to-weight ratios.
“As is normal business practice, Barhaul was looking at competitor brands but one of the key elements of retaining its business with Terex Trucks and TDL is the excellent working relationship that has been established over the years.”
Created to work harder for longer, the machine offers minimum cost of operation and maximum productivity. With fully independent front suspension as standard, tyre/ground contact is maintained on tough terrain, increasing tractive effort and reducing cycle times, while also providing operators with a comfortable haul.
Patrick Bradley, director of Barhaul, says: “We have purchased Terex Trucks’ articulated dump trucks for a number of years and have been very pleased with their performance as well as the excellent aftermarket support provided by TDL - a winning combination.”
Built in Motherwell, Scotland, the TA300 is mastered by a fuel-efficient five cylinder Scania DC9 engine, which develops gross power of 276 kW and maximum torque of 1,880 Nm. In addition, the transmission retardation system in

Giving Trucks the Personal Touch Dutch contractor’s Volvo hauler fleet customised to match the needs of the operators. The village in the eastern Netherlands has seen seasons and centuries pass. Dating back to 855, the town has withstood the test of time and has fostered a close-knit community of around 1,700 people – one of whom is Gerard den Hartog. Much like Andelst, Gerard den Hartog has a reputation for quality and craftsmanship, both of which are evident in the success of his family-run business, Gebroeders Den Hartog, of which he is CEO. The Dutch earthmoving contracting company has been in business for almost 50 years and is owned by four brothers and a nephew, who began farming with their fathers before diversifying into construction equipment in the 1970s, offering its customers what was then – and is still – around-the-clock, seven day a week service. From road and rail projects to the construction of water defenses, landfills and even golf courses, Gerb. den Hartog requires suitably high quality machines to handle various applications. And for the last 42 years, the company has chosen Volvo Construction Equipment as it’s prime supplier of machines. In 2016, Gerb. den Hartog received its 75th Volvo machine, the Volvo A30G. The A30G joins the company’s current fleet, which includes four other A30G articulated haulers, six A30Fs, an A25G, an A25D and L110H and L50F wheel loaders. “We have chosen Volvo machines based on quality, trust and service,” says Gerard den Hartog. “Moreover, using solely Volvo machines simplifies the stock of maintenance parts, as day-to-day maintenance is undertaken on site.”

“The A30G received last year is the best size for the Dutch market given the tire size, ground clearance and fuel consumption,” explains den Hartog. The new G-Series haulers incorporate state-of-the-art technology and innovative features that enable them to safely manoeuver, travel, pick up and dump material loads efficiently and safely. The A30G also features automatic selflevelling, stability at high speed and offers fast dump cycles. “The Volvo A25G and A30G articulated trucks are highly flexible machines,” adds den Hartog. “Day in, day out, they make the perfect partner for my operators, as we tackle a range of applications.” Particularly appreciated by the company’s operators in the new G-Series are the machines’ ergonomic controls, precision and stability. Visibility from the cab also scores highly with operators, who are able to work at high speeds and with a high degree of safety.
However, what the operators really enjoy is the ability to customize their machines. Den Hartog explains that the operators treat their haulers like a home-away-from-home; they respect the machines they work with, often giving them a personal touch, such as the addition of carpets and other interior decoration. He also gives his operators full responsibility for their machines, monitoring performance and maintenance. With the end reward, often being a brand new machine. “I know what the operators want,” says den Hartog. “Comfort and visibility are important to the operator. While my personal focus may be swayed towards the total cost of ownership, I know that a happy operator means better productivity.”

A&Y Equipment Ltd will be showing a number of key products from its Ammann, Yanmar and Cormidi ranges at the show, located on both the static stand and demo area. A variety of Yanmar excavators from 1 through to 10 tonne are being exhibited, both zero tail swing (ViO) and semi zero (SV). It will be the first time for many to see the new and improved 5 tonne class ViO50-6. Its newly designed cab and increases in power and stability have made it a popular seller in 2017. The Vi012 micro that debuted at the Executive Hire Show will also be on the stand. Since its first appearance, a number of these have been sold with one user who says they treat it like a 1.5 tonne machine but with the compactness of a one tonner.
Three models of Cormidi tracked dumper will complete A&Y’s presence at the show. These incredibly popular dumpers are custom built as tracked dumpers, with features such as rocking rollers and hydrostatic drive making them high performers over all manner of terrains. Trimble will be demonstrating its new Spectra Precision GL622N grade laser which follows on from the hugely successful GL622 model. The unit is an easy to use, full featured grade laser which is rugged and automatically self-levelling. action. There will also be the opportunity for those with correct PPE and valid operating licences to trial the units. Worsley Plant will be launching the 4th generation of MB crushing buckets at this year’s show. Designed to resist the most challenging conditions on any site, the BF90.3 crushing bucket is extremely compact and versatile and has been updated and made more powerful over the years. VTN Europe have come up trumps with the latest innovations in crushing and screening attachments and the company will be displaying the latest design VTN DSG Series of screening buckets, for quick and easy separation of stones and soil to produce a clean high quality reusable material.
The battery-powered loader is especially suitable for indoor use where ventilation is limited, meaning the operator and workers are not exposed to the exhaust emissions which create health risks.
With the focus still on crushing and screening the Rubblemaster compact tracked impact crusher will be another star attraction, breaking the perception that impact crushers have no place in high volume crushing and screening.
A further benefit of a battery driven machine is the extremely low noise level, meaning it can be used in noise restricted areas. The new e-series features two models: Avant e5 and Avant e6. The quick attach system as well as the multi connector for the attachment hydraulics are the same as in other Avant models, so the large attachment range is suitable also to the e-series.
The company will also be displaying the full range of Furukawa hydraulic breakers for excavators from 0.5 to 100 tonne. Also featuring on the stand will be LaBounty’s world class leading range of MSD scrap shears and pulverisers.
With almost 600 square metres of space including a large digging demo area with a full range of excavators available for test drives Hanix Europe’s stand will be hard to miss at the show. “Following our participation at PlantworX in 2015 we have seen a renewed level of interest in the brand,” says Hanix MD, Paul Clarke. “We are particularly looking forward to presenting our new 8.5-tonne midi-excavator to the public for the first time at PlantworX and, again another first for the UK, we will be demonstrating a fully radio-controlled version of the popular 5.5-tonne H55DR excavator.”
The demo area will be handed over to a Liebherr 914 fitted with the OilQuick system, demonstrating the ease of attachment changeover in just 15 seconds. Avant will showcase its innovative batterypowered, zero emission loader at PlantworX. The new e-series is fully electric battery-powered loader in the same size class as the Avant 500 series, offering zero emissions, extremely low noise and minimal running costs.

The Hanix N085uj, which replaces the muchloved H75C, is the first of a new generation of Hanix ‘urban’ mini- and midi-excavators. A highperformance 2,615cc Kubota V2607 engine provides 43 kW of power for this 8,315 kg machine, and its relatively low capacity promises excellent fuel economy, with emissions in line with EU Stage IIIB regulations. The machine specifications also confirm that this model is available with an option of either short or long dipper arm – the longer option adds 200 mm to both maximum digging depth and ground level reach; at 4,505 and 7,135 mm respectively. The company’s range of excavators will be joined by a pair of crawler-mounted aerial work platforms; the articulating boom platforms are manufactured in Japan by Hanix Europe’s parent company, Nagano Industry and Hanix plan to introduce these machines to the UK during 2017. Kubota, the manufacturer of compact construction equipment, will be showcasing its brand new mini excavator, the KX042-4 at this year’s show.

force. Along with integrated worm drive providing 360deg continuous rotation and hydraulics system within the solid cast housing. On the Wacker Neuson stand, the centre of attention will be the company’s DW90 cabbed dumper with the new optional OPS+ system as well as the electric wheel loader WL20e, which has been awarded “Highly Commended” in the Environmental Innovation category of the PlantworX Innovation Awards 2017.
Auger Torque Trencher Attachments can cut channels up to 1.5 metres deep and up to 350 mm wide in one continuous operation, depositing the spoil into a tidy pile to one side of the trench. Featuring three chain options they can handle a wide variety of ground conditions and are therefore popular with utility providers and contractors working in varied ground conditions; a fast and easy solution to a common challenge.
The cabbed dumper with OPS+ – OPS stands for operator presence switch – offers additional operator safety. The seat contact switch only allows the machine to start up when the operator is seated. If the operator is standing, the speed is reduced in a controlled manner. The machine will slow down with the aid of the hydrostatic breaking. This ensures maximum safety on the construction site. The option is available for the Wacker Neuson dumpers DW60, DW90 and DW100 with payloads of 6,000, 9,000 and 10,000 kilograms.
In addition the company will be displaying Skidsteer Pallet Forks and the ‘Drill/Mix’ Mixer Bowl attachment for fencing, the revolutionary new Stump Planer, a device that removes tree stumps quickly and quietly whilst keeping the debris to a minimum, and the all-new Hedge Trimmer which makes light work of maintaining hedgerows and long grass. The KINSHOFER Nox tiltrotator will be displayed by Augertorque at the show. Its ram-less design is compact, both in width and height, and durable. The tiltrotator fits easily to machines ranging from 3.0 to 25 tonnes operating weight and allows ease of operation in many applications. The whole design is based around efficiency, low maintenance and maximising productivity. The tiltrotator is the result of years of research and development. The cast body is produced from high strength special alloy ensuring durability in the toughest conditions. The tilting function is achieved by an elliptic rotary actuator ensuring an extremely compact design with constant tilting

The electric wheel loader WL20e has two electric motors, one for the drive system and one for the operating hydraulics, ensure that the performance features of the wheel loader WL20e with a bucket capacity of 0.2 m3 match those of the conventional machine. Contractors who opt for the compact batterypowered wheel loader therefore do not need to compromise in terms of performance, but can benefit from the advantage of zero emissions. This is an aspect that is becoming increasingly important, for example on construction sites in urban areas, and when working indoors, such as in greenhouses, during building restorations or in parking garages.

SKM Asset Finance Ltd is celebrating our 20th anniversary this year, which means we have been providing asset finance to the construction industry for 20 years! Steve and Jackie Moody formed the company in 1997 as an asset finance brokerage at a time when finance brokers were few and far between, especially one that would specialise in financing construction equipment. However Steve already had 14 years of construction finance experience from his time at JCB Credit and Construction Equipment Finance whilst Jackie had 7 years’ experience with Barclays Mercantile and Construction Equipment Finance. From humble beginnings trading out of a spare bedroom, the business has grown over the past 2 decades and we now arrange around £30m of asset finance each year. Over the past 20 years we have arranged more than £475 million of asset finance, predominantly on construction equipment.
come and visit the SKM Asset Finance team on stand H32 to discuss any finance requirements you may have.
We currently have over 30 finance companies on our panel of funders which enables us to place over 98% of all proposals that we receive, a figure we are very proud of.
We are also running a business card draw where the winner will win a case of Gold Digger real ale and a tour of the Wincle Microbrewery for up to 6 people. Gold Digger has been specially bottled for the show!
Whilst many finance companies and banks took shelter during the 2008-2012 recession, by either not lending at all or on restricted terms if they did, SKM were continuously supporting our customer, dealer and manufacturer partners. Not only did we fund equipment when others wouldn’t but we supported our customers who had financial difficulties by rescheduling their existing finance agreements or by providing cashflow solutions.
‘It is important to support the industry by exhibiting at these types of show’ states Jackie. ‘We know we can add a competitive advantage to manufacturers and dealers with our sales-aid finance proposition’. Steve adds ‘to demonstrate this support we are members of the Construction Equipment Association (CEA) and the Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) and recently became members of the Lighthouse Club’.
SKM has a team of 7 regional agents and we are probably the most experienced team of specialist construction finance professionals in the UK.
Asset finance is an extremely important part of the construction equipment buying process and we look forward to meeting you if you are visiting Plantworx.
We will be celebrating our anniversary at Plantworx this year and whether you are a business owner, dealer or manufacturer please

A&Y Equipment Ltd will be showing a number of key products for their Ammann, Yanmar and Cormidi ranges at Plantworx 2017. Located on both the large static stand and demo area. A variety of Yanmar excavator from 1 through to 10 tonne are being exhibited, both zero tail swing (ViO) and semi zero (SV). It will be the first time for many to see the new and improved 5 tonne, ViO50-6. Its new cab design along with increases in power and stability have made it a popular seller in 2017. The micro that debuted at the Executive Hire Show, the ViO12, will also be on the stand, since its first appearance a number of these have been sold with one user telling us they treat it like a 1.5 tonne machine but with the compactness of a 1 tonner. A machine that always turns heads and gets a lot of interest on social media and on sites is

the SV100-2 piece boom. This 10 tonne Yanmar uses the traditional boom configuration from wheeled excavators to make it an incredibly versatile digger. We will have one of these located in our demonstration area where you can see for yourself the array of time saving features on offer and just why we believe this model has found a niche in the 10 tonne range. On the compaction side the Ammann ASC130 roller will stand out due to its size. This 13 tonne single drum roller will be joined by light tandem ARX rollers, including the ever popular ARX26 (120cm drum width) and ARX12 (80 cm drum width). A number of these roller models, including the Ammann Rammax ARR1575 trench roller have been part of a large deal with Ardent Hire Solutions recently. Showing the belief in these products from a national company. 4 models of Cormidi tracked dumper will complete A&Y’s presence at the show. These incredibly popular dumpers are custom built as tracked dumpers, with features such as rocking rollers and hydrostatic drive making them high performers over all manner of terrains. With show special finance deals on offer A&Y look forward to welcoming customers old and new at the event.

What operational challenges does your business face today? Whilst you could no doubt list a few, for many it’s a lack of covered space for storage, machine repairs, training facilities etc, for both permanent and temporary applications. They need the covered area, but the costs of a new building or an extension to the existing are prohibitive. Specialist rental provider PSS Hire were one such company. They needed to expand storage and workshop areas in their network. Head of Operations Brent Smith commented: “A number of options were considered, however the Zappshelter was chosen because of its value for money, and quality of product. The installation was simplistic and required no specialist contractors which reduced time and cost. The shelters look professional and are a great improvement to the Depots.”
If this is your situation, you’re not alone. In fact, recent studies show that it’s one of the biggest factors affecting the construction, plant and waste sectors today. I’m delighted to present a revolutionary solution to your problem: Meet Zappshelter.
Other customers have been faced with the challenge of covering materials. It could be waste, where the penalty for pollutants leaching into the watercourses is high, or new materials awaiting use in construction, manufacturing etc.
Zappshelter is revolutionary system for providing rapid cover for a huge range of applications, both temporary and permanent. Utilising common structures such as shipping containers, site cabins and concrete bunker walls makes Zappshelter a cost-effective solution. It is rapidly installed using only basic equipment, and offers a highly durable solution to the problem of outside working and storage.
Auxilium Property Solutions Ltd approached our team for a storage solution. They were under pressure and the weather threatened to ruin the project. Managing director Dale Cross commented: “We bought a Zappshelter recently for a site in Southampton where we are currently refurbishing a student accommodation building. It’s absolutely vital that we are able to store our materials under cover when they are delivered to site to protect them from the weather. The Zappshelter was erected by ourselves on site, right outside the building in which we are
Common applications include hire depots, workshops, welding and paint bays, construction sites, biomass plants, waste recycling, dockside storage and salt stockpiles, to name a few. Zappshelter has been designed to stringent engineering standards, making it suitable for virtually any climate. So why is this product of interest to the construction, waste and rental industries? Well, many buy Zappshelters simply for use in their depots across the UK and Europe, because they provide rapid and effective cover for people and plant. Everyone knows how hard it is to find and keep good fitters, and to provide a dry, undercover area for them to repair machines is a great way to retain talent.

Many problems. One solution. Staff retention | Covered storage | Cost-saving Making waves in UK and Europe, Zappshelter has been welcomed by some of the biggest names in the industry. Protection from the elements has been a problem for centuries; however, there has never been anything quite like Zappshelter. Zappshelter rolls speed, cost, cover and safety into one beautifully simple package. Cost-effective and rapid to install, it is structurally engineered to provide exceptional all-weather protection. It’s also easy to dismantle too, so it can be relocated if required. Utilising common structures such as shipping containers, site cabins and concrete bunker walls makes it even more versatile. Common applications include hire depots, workshops, welding and paint bays, construction sites, recycling, dockside storage and salt stockpiles, to name a few. So why is this product of interest to the construction, waste and rental industries? Well, many buy Zappshelters simply for use in their depots because they provide great cover for people and plant. JCB Raises Recycling Uptime
52
DIGGERS & DOZERS
Just 15 minutes off the M1 near Derby, lies a 50acre hub of recycling on Crompton Road in Ilkeston. The variety of companies here can between them recycle just about anything. At the centre of this hub is Stanton Recycling’s 5-acre site.
Starting out 35 years ago as a skip hire business, the family owned company is today a fully focused waste transfer and treatment plant. The waste is predominantly municipal, from Stanton’s domestic and small commercial waste contracts with local authorities. The volume of waste imported on to the site has grown year-on-year, leading Stanton to develop its infrastructure from a single small building to process it, to three buildings. Mick Clifton, Operations Manager at Stanton Recycling said: “People notice when you do something good and that’s how our waste import has increased. Waste is an industry that will never go away and we are getting busier year-onyear with more business from our existing contracts. We have to look after them and provide the service they want.” This, of course, places greater demand on its materials handling machines. “Having machinery running all of the time is the best thing we can wish for,” says Mick. Fulfilling this wish is Stanton’s fleet of materials handling machines comprising a JCB JS145 tracked excavator and three JCB 560-80 Wastemaster Loadalls – its newest arrival. Stanton processes the municipal waste inside its three buildings, which calls for a manoeuvrable materials handling vehicle. “We’ve tried loading shovels but they don’t offer the same manoeuvrability as the Loadalls, which also have a comparable capacity,” says Mick. “The 560-80s are the best machines for this environment. We don’t have a lot of room inside our buildings for large waste moving machines so JCB’s Loadall fits the bill for our compact site. They are ideal.” The versatile machines are used for most jobs on site. “One minute it can be a forklift, the next it can be a loader. Some loading shovels, can do this but changing attachments is not as easy,” says Mick,

impressed with the JCBs’ reversing cameras, visibility and white noise sirens.”
adding that all of Stanton’s JCBs multitask. “They can all do each others’ jobs with their universal attachments. This means that if one of our machines needs servicing, we can swap over to another in a matter of minutes so production never stops.”
Having invested in materials handling machinery, waste and recycling sites will want to get the most out of them. Stanton is maximising the productivity and uptime of its machines using JCB’s LiveLink telematics system. This gives Stanton regular reports via email showing a break down of a machine’s daily operation, including work hours and fuel consumption. Time not running is illustrated in grey while running time is shown in orange. Stanton gets clear visibility of the machine’s utilisation – and there are few grey areas on Stanton’s site.
Outside the buildings, Stanton uses its JS145 to handle green waste brought in by the local council. Stanton shreds this waste to create compost for selling to commercial companies. Like the Loadalls, the JS145 can be quickly reassigned with a switch of an attachment. “JCB’s Wastemasters are far in front of any other machine that we’ve had on site because they are built for the waste job,” says Mick. “We have looked at other machines but they are not a patch on the JCBs. Our drivers love them because of the great visibility from the cabs and they get to work in a very comfortable environment. That’s particularly important because they don’t get fatigued while working six to seven hours a day.”
“A Loadall may be loading lorries and moving waste around. We can see clearly what work it’s doing and what work it has actually done. We can monitor which machines are doing the most hours and working the hardest and we can rotate the machines on to an easier job and let the new machines get the harder work. LiveLink also tells us when a machine is due for maintenance and will flag up any issues a machine may have.”
Safety has always been paramount on Stanton’s site, which has an impressive health and safety record – reporting over 4600 (and counting) working days without any accidents. “That’s very good for the waste industry,” says Mick. “During a recent routine inspection, the HSE were
For Stanton, reliable back-up is crucial. “There’s no machine that won’t break down eventually, so it’s all about how quickly it can be fixed,” says Mick. “We have had machines in the past from

“In the event of a breakdown, the service we receive from our JCB dealer, TC Harrison JCB, is second to none.” TC Harrison has a depot in Alfreton near Derby and head office in Chapeltown, Sheffield. “If I ring JCB up, somebody will turn up the same day or at least first thing the next morning. Its service is over and above that of any other machinery supplier. Plus, I don’t think there’s any other manufacturer that offers a similar connection with the people who supply the kit.” Stanton purchases its machines using finance. “It’s not just that you get a new machine with all of JCB’s features that make it fit for purpose on a waste and recycling site such as ours, you also get a competitive rate from JCB Finance. With the warranties and servicing contracts we have a fixed monthly cost, which makes budgeting easier – that works for any business,” says Mick.

Stanton normally exchanges on a three-year cycle – sometimes four years, depending on the hours they do. The machine’s solid tyres won’t have to be replaced during its lifespan on the site. “The oldest machine on site is coming up to 4500 hours – that will be the next machine to be traded in for a like for like JCB replacement. Mick concludes: “For us, the whole package around the machines is important. We will stay with JCB as long as they keep providing us with what we want.”

Digging It Groundworks Ltd expand their fleet with RK6 and Anaconda The MD of Digging It, Ben Boare commented, “Ever since purchasing the RUBBLE MASTER RM70 GO! 2.0 from RK6, we have had great success with a range of customers from the obvious construction and demolition companies needing to recycle their waste on site, to the farmers and small developers and groundworks companies wanting to save money and create a product they could reuse saving them even more money on importing material back in. Shortly after buying the crusher and after some guidance from the guys at RK6, I decided to make the leap and purchase the Anaconda DF514 screener. After a short demonstration, it was easy to see the benefits of having this machine. I am now producing not only Type 1 and 6F5 materials, but able to provide whatever my customers need. I’m now providing screened crush at -6mm for the cement industry and 10mm and 20mm stone for the concrete industry. The high quality and shape of the product is only made possible using the RUBBLE MASTER RM70 GO! 2.0 and the Anaconda DF514 together. It was a big decision for our company but definitely the right one for us. Aaron McVeigh at RK6 was on hand and has already helped in securing hire contracts for both machines, and both are immediately available for short and long term hire.”
Andover based Digging It Groundworks Ltd recently took delivery of a brand-new Anaconda DF514 Scalping Screen from Red Knight 6 Ltd to add to their extensive hire fleet. Digging It Groundworks Ltd are a well-established hire and construction company based in Andover offering a range of services throughout the South of England. Having had success in the hire and haulage industry providing excavators, dumpers, tele-handlers, tippers and grab lorries to the industry, Digging It added an Anaconda DF514 Scalping Screen to widen their application and customer base.

The company provides a comprehensive range of services from land remediation, waste recycling and plant hire to civil engineering and infrastructure works. Central to the business is the drive and capability to increase land value for their clients and enhance the environmental performance of the regeneration and built environment process. They are based in Rochester, Kent, and supported by other satellite sites to provide a nationwide coverage for their clients.
The new release system ensures even more homogeneous final aggregate in regular operation and the reliable swinging out of the impact plate when non-crushable materials enter. The crusher is designed so that the impact plates can be exchanged with a short time. This means that the crusher can be equipped for recycling or natural stone applications as required. This is additionally supported by three different rotor speeds which can be easily selected on the operator control panel. The new RM GO! SMART offers a remote service which enables efficient condition monitoring and mobile crusher operation giving more ease of mind to the owner/operator.
They have continued to enhance their profile and reputation in key market sectors through securing workloads with both existing and new clients, including work generated through frameworks and long term joint ventures. Although testing the machines and getting the deal done were paramount, there was still enough time for relaxation as RUBBLE MASTER treated everyone to a few days skiing on the beautiful Austrian Alps near Linz, something keen skiers Colin Basi, and Craig Hore, Manager of Plant Services at KKB Group, took full advantage of. Craig Hore commented, “KKB always do our due diligence on whatever company we decide to partner with for our machinery needs. We have had a long working relationship with Paul Donnelly from RK6. We have every confidence that all our needs will be met with regards to machine performance and maintenance. We’ve made a good choice”. The RUBBLE MASTER RM 120GO! is the RM Flagship with an output of up to 350tph and catapults RUBBLE MASTER into a new league. With this innovation, RM sets new standards in terms of performance, ease of maintenance, efficiency and innovative design. Weighing in at only 35 tonnes, the RM 120GO! is the most compact crusher of its type. Unique crusher design and excellent final aggregate quality:
Using the hammer changing device including lifting hoist, you save time and money and increase safety when changing over the hammers on this mobile crusher. The Hammer Holder allows the user to have a replacement set of hammers available on-site at all times. The Hammer Holder provides space for two replacement hammers directly on the machine. Thanks to the dust suppression system, the operator can reduce dust emissions and increase acceptance of the mobile crusher with operating in residential areas. The Light Mast gives additional floodlighting so giving the operator sufficient lighting to work safely even at dawn and dusk. Thanks to an integrated fuel filling pump including hose, overflow switch and automatic switch off system, the user no longer needs the help of an external pump to fill up. With the help of the additional RM MS mesh deck screen and recirculation conveyor, the crushed material is screened to the desired end aggregate size in a single pass, allowing for more efficiency and reduced costs overall.

Packington Rings Bell The Packington Estate, a thriving West Midlands mixed-use enterprise combining farming, forestry, residential and commercial divisions, has announced its continued relationship with Bell Equipment UK, as the estate extends its Bell fleet from four to five vehicles with the purchase of a new L1706 wheel loader.
The estate, which extends to nearly 5000 acres across Birmingham and Coventry, began its relationship with Bell in 2012 when it was granted permission to develop ‘The Stonebridge Quarry’ within a mineral-rich area of the estate. Quarry Manager, Lindsay Smith, joined the team in early 2013, to oversee the setup and operation of the project, which was designed to reveal a quarry of two distinct layered tiers; a top layer of ‘dry screened’ sand to be utilised as mortar sand, and a mixed bottom layer of both sand and gravel, which once processed, could be used within concrete mixes. Successfully converting the land from farmland to a working quarry required the acquisition of new equipment, together
with creating the necessary earthworks and engineering to establish the site. Sourcing the most capable and appropriate machines for the job was assigned to Lindsay and his team. “In order to effectively create the quarry, and begin excavating from within it, we needed two different designs of machine; wheeled loaders and articulated dump trucks,” he explains. “I was already familiar with the Bell Equipment range of Loaders and ADTs, and knew the size and types of machine the company manufactured would be correct for our purpose in the quarry. More importantly, I had worked with the excellent team at Bell previously, and knew they had the experience and competence I was looking for from a supplier. I trusted Bell and wanted to work with them.” Lindsay explains that he chose to secure two new B25D trucks at the outset of the project back in early 2013. The machines became ‘excavation enablers’, and were used to dig out the lagoons as part of the initial site setup. “These models were the ideal work horses for this extensive task,” Lindsay continues. “Their impressively low fuel consumption has been a stand-out

feature over the years, and I’m happy to confirm that regarding the vehicles, I’ve received the level of service, maintenance and support I was hoping for from Bell; which was one of my main objectives in choosing them.”
Both L2106s have performed successfully ever since, with one used to load material into lorries for ongoing sales, and the another to fill the wash plant feed hopper. Recently however, call for materials has steadily increased, leading Lindsay to make a further investment with Bell, and bring a new L1706 on board to help meet growing demand.
Over three years later the ADTs are still being used daily, hauling raw material from excavation to processing plant, and performing earthwork and restoration procedures on-site. The machines still work alongside the two L2106 wheel loaders which Lindsay bought for the quarry’s fleet at the end of 2013; a decision made after Bell offered him a trial of a L2106. He says how pleased his operatives were with the machine at the time, favouring it over competitor models, as they “felt the Bell loader’s engine power made it easier to operate.”
“We’re delighted with our newly acquired L1706, and are setting it to task, feeding material into the quarry’s dry sand screen. “The machine’s performance has been superb to-date. We’ve had no major issues, and any minor problems have been quickly resolved. Bell’s service team has kept all our machines in good working order, and has made itself readily available to us; providing support and information whenever it’s needed,” he concludes. “I’d certainly buy from Bell again because in my experience, when it comes to choosing a plant machine, there is often little between brands. However, for me, it’s the people you deal with that make the difference, and with Bell, I get what I’m looking for from a supplier, each and every time.”
The ‘power’ his team referred to is driven by a John Deere POWERTECH Plus 6090H engine, certified to EPA Tier 2 EU Stage II non-road emission standards, and capable of a 197 kW @ 1800 rpm net peak power. Impressed with the loader’s abilities, Lindsay secured the two models for the quarry’s fleet as soon as the facility’s wash plant was installed.

Tarmac Tames Big Cat
Tarmac has bolstered its fleet of plant machinery with the acquisition of a new excavator at its Mountsorrel quarry in Leicestershire. Capable of moving over three million tonnes of material per year, the company’s Caterpillar 6030 hydraulic mining shovel weighs approximately 300 tonnes, generates over 1,500 horsepower and completes the firm’s line-up of new equipment at Mountsorrel.
Now fully operational, the excavator is playing a fundamental role in sustaining ongoing output at one of the most productive and large-scale quarrying operations in the country. To ensure the 6030 operates to its optimum capacity, Caterpillar has also introduced a number of technical management systems, with on-board computers providing real-time performance data to monitor its health and minimise breakdowns.
Ian Brown, manufacturing manager at Tarmac, said: “Our objective is to continue to provide high quality construction materials to our customers and it’s important we have the right plant and equipment to deliver maximum site productivity.
Safer, quieter and fitted with the latest modern emissions controls, the new model is also more efficient than its predecessor, reducing fuel consumption by around 20 per cent.
“The 6030 excavator is our second here at Mountsorrel and the two are the largest of their kind in operation at a UK quarry. This new userfriendly machinery will undoubtedly enable us to run the quarry to its optimum output, safely and professionally.” The machine was delivered in sections on 12 separate trucks and took a team of dedicated engineers from UK Caterpillar distributor Finning four weeks to assemble on site.
John Vardy, Strategic Account General Manager at Finning, commented: “The Cat 6030 FS is our hydraulic shovel that leads the class in productivity, reliability and safety. It is the perfect production match for the Cat 777 size class trucks working in Mountsorrel quarry.

Cabcare strengthens position as ma jor player in the aftersales demolition market
Cabcare, the leading provider of bespoke vandal and demolition guards for all types of construction machinery, has acquired the Jayrox and Jayscreen brands.
“We have a unique level of design experience in our business for vandal and demolition guards, and we want to continue to improve cab protection whether that’s vandal guards or FOP systems to protect against working in demolition. “The Jayrox and Jayscreen brands compliment our existing range and this move demonstrates our ongoing commitment to providing the best equipment in this field.” Cabcare is an approved supplier to many of the leading construction equipment manufacturers, including CAT, Case, Doosan, JCB, Hitachi, Hyundai, Komatsu, New Holland, Takeuchi, Volvo and others.
Renowned for quality, reliability and precision products, the Jayrox and Jayscreen brands perfectly compliment the Cabcare portfolio of vandal guards, rock/demolition guards and hand rails.
Operating from modern, purpose built premises in the heart of the Midlands, its products are designed and manufactured to meet and exceed current safety standards. An on-site fitting service is offered with experienced operatives covering the whole of the UK.
Richard Davies, Cabcare managing director, said: “Over the past 20 years, we have developed our design methodology to become the leading provider of vandal guards for all types of construction equipment. And in early 2012 we expanded into the rock/FOPS market by acquiring the rights to the Tanmill range of FOPS certified demolition guards.”
Rock / demolition guards Cabcare rock or FOPS demolition guards are designed to protect machine operators from

falling objects when working in either quarries or on demolition sites. Its guards include a removable front grill to aid visibility when front screen protection is not required as well as a raised section in the roof to allow the machines skylight (where fitted) to open.
Adrian Grew, Cabcare technical sales director, explains: “Gone are the days when vandal guard panels were secured to the cab by drilling a series of holes in the cab to secure the mounting channel and locks. All our current guards are designed to pick-up on existing fixing points, ensuring the cab’s certification is not compromised.
Following extensive computer stress analysis/ modeling and testing in conjunction with the British Standards Institute, in 2010 Cabcare invested in its own test rig, to allow ongoing testing and analysis of its guards to the FOPS test standard BS EN ISO 3449 & ISO10262. The business offers both chassis mounted and cab mounted guards to meet and exceed these standards.
Cabcare uses a unique snaplock fitting to provide quick and easy fixing of the guard at the end of the working day.
Vandal guards Cabcare vandal guards offer peace of mind, lower insurance costs and reduce down-time by providing reliable plant protection.
Adrian Grew explains: “The last thing our customers want at the end of a long day is to find and fit 10 or 12 padlocks. Our ¼ turn snaplock provides quick and easy fitting of the guard, no key is required when fitting them. The panels are mounted onto the machine and the locks are simply pushed home. The key is only required to remove the panel.”

Hand rails Cabcare provides a wide range of handrails to provide protection to the driver when working on the back of the excavator. The handrails are designed to bolt onto existing fixings to avoid unneccesary drilling or welding onto the machine. Adrian Grew explains: “Traditionally handrails have been very large, solid structures that had to be bolted or welded onto the machine structure. The Cabcare handrail systems are designed to be lighter and more flexible to reduce and prevent the cracking issues that some large structures have.” Jayrox and Jayscreen guards are available with immediate effect from Cabcare.
