INSITE Mixed Signals

Anyone that was fortunate enough to attend the Bauma 2019 exhibition (page 43) in Germany will surely have left buoyed with positivity and inspired by the sheer volume of innovation on display. In the three years since the global construction and demolition equipment industry last gathered at the sprawling Messe Munchen exhibition centre in Munich, equipment manufacturers have invested billions to make their products safer, more productive, and more environmentally friendly.

They have done so on the basis that the recession is now but a distant and painful memory and that all in the industry garden is now rosy.

And yet that is certainly not being reflected on the ground in the UK where even seasoned and respected contractors are struggling to find sufficient work. There are, of course, some companies that are almost unfeasibly busy. And the likes of JBV Demolition, KDC Contractors, Squibb Group and Thompsons of Prudhoe will be feeling the buzz of excitement and positivity having been named on the framework for the decommissioning and demolition of the Douneray power station in Scotland.

But for the rest of the industry, the beginning of 2019 has felt like an unwelcome throwback to those dark days of recession.

It is easy to suggest that such feelings can be explained entirely by the seemingly unending saga of the Brexit negotiations and by the lack of clarity and leadership being displayed by those elected to deal with such lofty matters. But in two of the first three months of 2019, the construction industry has enjoyed record levels of new contract awards. So why is the demolition sector still languishing in the financial and economic doldrums?

This can be partly explained by the usual time between contract award and contract start, the point at which a demolition contractor actually pitches up on site. That time averages out at around 25 weeks and so, while February and March experienced record levels of new construction contract awards, the resulting work may not filter through to the demolition sector until the summer.

The promise of future work is, of course, positive.

But it will be of scant consolation to those companies that are currently scratching around for the work needed to keep their men and machines in action.

Infrastructure, and the Circular Economy

STUFF With a growing global population, the need for new or renovated infrastructure is becoming ever more prevalent. But how do we go about making sure that this infrastructure is sustainable? Dr Paul Toyne explains on behalf of Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) how the circular economy, combined with an investment in technological innovation, is our most powerful tool in shaping the infrastructure of tomorrow. infrastructure over the next decades surely, we need some seriously strong incentives to make sure that we build sustainably?

A Journey of Learning

Infrastructure provides all the vital services to keep an urban area functioning – that can be anything from transport and energy to utilities such as waste disposal. Regardless of whether it is sustainable or not our need for infrastructure is growing.

This is for two main reasons: we have a growing global population which means a higher demand for infrastructure and, on top of that, a large proportion of this population is being born into or migrating into cities. Currently, over 50 percent of the global population live in cities and that figure is set to rise to 60 percent by 2030. With a staggering $350 trillion estimated to be invested in global urban

Policy and industry attitudes are changing but is this change happening fast enough to mitigate the huge effects of climate change?

In my opinion, public procurement strategies should be setting targets which are far more challenging to the industry, particularly on the environmental impact of the materials used and the finished asset in operation. But we are going to need a lot more than political will to mitigate pollution and improving efficiency in the construction industry. We will need further research and development (R&D) into areas such as digitalisation, electromobility, virtual reality, 3D printing, new materials, the redesign of existing products, and the subsequent trialing of these innovations. This will involve new types of collaboration and business models.

Sectors such as energy are already investing heavily in R&D, for example in battery storage, and consequently advancements in efficiency and decarbonisation. As this sector and others advance, the need for the construction

stuff industry to make changes becomes ever pressing. But in an industry that is so risk-averse, how can innovation and collaboration be promoted and invested in? One movement that aims to support collaboration between researchers, key industry players, and environmental specialists is the Construction Climate Challenge initiative hosted by Volvo CE. These different groups come together to share knowledge, costs, risks – and ultimately the benefits – of working collaboratively to develop new innovative ways to cut carbon in the construction and procurement industry. Presenting their experience demonstrating efficiency and associated cost savings helps advance new ways of working within the construction industry.

Round in Circles

The definition of sustainable development is the process of maintaining a balanced environment that meets life’s needs now and, in the future. The sustainable element of infrastructure is not just in the upfront design, construction methods and use of materials in the asset, but also its operation, maintenance, and disposal; and this is the basis of a circular economy.

A circular economy is an economic system aimed at minimising waste and making the most of resources.

So, when designing and building infrastructure the whole lifecycle needs to be considered. We can then focus far more holistically on how to make the asset more sustainable – be that design for deconstruction or complete recyclability.

And the value of understanding the life cycle of materials is being widely recognised by industry and policy. The EU has estimated that by

extracting maximum value and use of raw materials – through waste prevention, eco-design, and reuse – EU businesses could save €600 billion while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 4.0 percent.

We’re increasingly seeing more understanding of product responsibility and this has been reflected in a number of policies and product standards particularly in the EU. The EU’s Circular Economy Package’s (CEP) revised text states that improving the efficiency of resource use and ensuring that waste is valued as a resource can contribute to reducing the dependence on the import of raw materials and facilitate the transition to more sustainable material management and to a circular economy model.

Once we’ve identified all the steps in producing, using and decommissioning our infrastructure we have to go about making these steps not only sustainable but affordable.

This will require investment to build capacity to execute these steps, which will, in turn, lead to the added benefits of upskilling the industry and creating jobs to support this new infrastructure.

Procurement strategies, also known as balanced scorecards, help identify the best possible design to maximise the social economic and environmental performance of a whole project, and this is absolutely key. But these strategies need to be more ambitious to further stimulate innovation.

Paving the Way

One project that has come a long way in this regard is the Stockholm Metro Extension project. The entire project comprises of 20 km of

new track and 11 new stations. To aid the design process a template station was developed as a model for all the stations. To reduce the carbon footprint for the stations, the project team first calculated the cost and the carbon footprint for the template station. Concrete and steel were the main contributors to the carbon footprint.

They then identified measures for reducing the materials and redesigning the station. The biggest carbon cuts came from the reduction of steel and the incorporation of recycled steel and other materials. The final step was to follow up the results and make a new carbon calculation to reduce the carbon even further for the second version of the template station. By following this process, not only was carbon reduced by 40 percent, but costs were also reduced by as much as 30 percent, as well as the physical amount of construction materials used.

There is a long way to go but one thing is clear, conventional construction methods and processes with existing materials are not the future. We need to redesign products infrastructure and policy in an integrated way if we are to build a better tomorrow.

Weaver Hits Landmark Rolls-Royce and ITV projects lead to £5.0 million milestone for Bristol demolition specialist.

Dismantling a jet engine bunker and internal demolition works on ITV studios has helped a Bristol demolition specialist hit the £5.0 million milestone.

Weaver Demolition, which employs 25 people from its base in Farrington Fields, has seen a 10 percent increase in turnover over the last twelve months, thanks mainly to its ability to combine modern equipment and industryleading working practices with the latest recycling and environmental solutions.

Established in 1968 by John Weaver, the company has evolved into one of the South West’s leading firms in its field, working with local councils, NHS Trusts, architects, consultants and private sector clients.

It is looking to build on recent growth by targeting larger projects that could create an additional £1.0 million boost and lead to five new jobs.

Brexit to Widen Skills Gap There is widespread belief within the construction industry that Brexit will severely increase the labour shortage as the supply of labour from the EU decreases. Following results from a recent survey, Anjni Varsani, Cost Manager at TowerEight provides an insight into why the UK Construction Industry needs to call for action to overcome the lengthening skills gap.

According to the TowerEight survey, 82 percent of the respondents suggest Brexit will create a shortage of labour, indicating there is a firm reliance on EU migrant labour in both the skilled and unskilled areas. The research found that a failure to introduce government intervention around training and promoting awareness of the construction industry in schools were crucial limitations towards the UK construction worker resource.

Small to medium companies are impacted the most severely by skills shortages as it hinders the growth and development of their business.

And the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows that 98 percent of construction firms are SME’s in the UK (under 80 staff).

Women in Construction account for just 12.4 percent of the current construction workforce, according to ONS. To overcome labour shortages,

the industry needs to attract a wide range of workers from both genders and all ages to develop a highquality output while giving them better training and development opportunities.

Technologies need to be enthusiastically embraced for construction to become more productive and to govern new technologies through extensive research and development.

However, the construction industry is too fragmented to push through such radical changes so quickly.

The training and education system for the sector is described as “not fit for purpose” for the UK construction job requirements. The relevance of academic institutions is questionable in meeting skills gaps in the UK purely in terms of getting to the scale required.

Government agencies should act and establish a strong support of construction workers and help achieve greater alignment between demand and supply requirements. Stronger partnering between educational institutes and

To develop this agenda, a single advanced body should be responsible for construction skills and training, as well as tasked with attracting young people from schools into the sector. This will allow for construction to progress to evolve to meet sectoral demands and provide the training required for a skilled, domestic workforce that is fit for purpose.

CITB and the Apprenticeship Levy already exist but merging the two bodies into one seems a more efficient way moving forward, speed up decision-making and reduce

The Apprenticeship Levy was enforced in April 2017 – it applied to employers with a payroll of more than £3 million then 0.5 percent of this payroll bill above that threshold was placed by HMRC into a fund for construction apprenticeships. However, only around two percent of all employers in construction will pay this levy due to a large number of small firms in the construction industry.

The current strategy for training will only help to soften the impact of Brexit impact; it will not resolve the fundamental issues of attracting new talent, particularly women and minority groups.

Technology Award-winning Australian demolition giant Liberty Industrial has invested in a state-of-the-art Volvo excavator training simulator. The simulator will travel between Liberty Industrial’s sites in a purpose built trailer unit that has been converted into a mobile training centre.

The latest in excavator simulation training technology, the Volvo Advanced Training Simulator 5.0 is inspired by aviation industry simulation training, and allows the operator to immerse themselves in a realistic virtual experience. The simulator features a high definition screen and includes realistic graphics and sounds, and a full motion platform incorporating movement and vibration that mimics the experience of operating a machine in a true-to-life scenario.

Operators will navigate simulated demolition, remediation and civil environments, undertaking a range of different virtual excavator operation training exercises such as shearing, sorting, processing, breaking, earth moving, rock handling and high reach demolition training.

The simulator will provide Liberty Industrial’s Trainee Operators with a realistic experience and help them to become accustomed to the operating environment and support them in developing and honing their skills before training in real machines.

Even Liberty Industrial’s most experienced plant operators will benefit from simulation training, with the opportunity to perfect certain skills, broaden their skill set by learning more advanced techniques.

“Well trained operators are key to maximising efficiency and productivity on our sites. Putting new operators on simulators before putting them on real machines minimises the risks and costs associated with training in live machines. In addition to reducing the obvious safety risks associated with inexperienced operators training in live plant, it will also free up machinery for project delivery rather than training exercises,” he says. “It will be environmentally friendly and cost effective over the long run too.

The simulation training will train our operators to drive the machine in the most fuel efficient way, reducing emissions and fuel costs as

well. “This initiative aligns with the Liberty Industrial ethos of leveraging innovative solutions to make the demolition, remediation and civil contracting environment safer and more efficient. It also supports our risk minimisation strategy which involves the removal of personnel from the work face where possible.”

Liberty Industrial is the first Australian contractor to invest in this kind of excavator simulation training equipment, with the only other known excavator simulators in Australia being owned and operated by peak Australian civil construction industry body, the Civil Contractors Federation.

The Australian civil contracting industry is already experiencing a

skilled labour shortage and the Civil Contractors Federation are predicting further shortfalls in skilled blue collar roles such as Plant Operators over the coming years as a number of major infrastructure projects ramp up.

“Investment in personnel training and development has never been more important. This technology will help us stay ahead of the game,” Gill concludes.

“The greatest challenge for the industry at the moment is to ensure that we have the skills and people to cater for the growth in the project pipeline. The success of these projects is underpinned by ensuring a suitably qualified workforce is able to be mobilised.”

Mapping Air Pollution King’s College London and British Safety Council have launched Canairy, the world’s first mobile app for outdoor workers to measure their exposure to air pollution in London.

Launched as part of the Time to Breathe campaign, the app provides outdoor workers with information to help them reduce their exposure to air pollution and employers with intelligence to enable them to protect the health of their workers.

Air pollution, linked up to 36,000 early deaths a year, is considered the biggest environmental risk to public health. Research from King’s College London suggests that more than 9,400 people die prematurely due to poor air quality in London alone. In 2013, International Agency for Research on Cancer classified diesel exhaust as carcinogenic to humans.

Canairy draws on the London Air Quality Network (LAQN) pollution map at King’s and the worker’s GPS to calculate a user’s exposure to pollution on an hourly basis. Once this exposure exceeds World Health Organisation’s (WHO) limits for the concentration of nitrogen dioxide, particulates and ozone, the app notifies the user and suggests tips to reduce their exposure, including working away from traffic, reducing strenuous work or putting up a screen barrier.

The app will, for the first time, collect information to enable the mapping of where and to what degree exposure is happening across the capital. Employers will be able to

“As a group, outdoors workers are particularly vulnerable to longterm exposure to ambient air pollution. Within a workplace, the risk of people’s exposure to polluted air can be controlled using wellestablished methods, but this is more difficult for outdoor workers, many of whom work near or on busy roads,” explains Andrew Grieve, Senior Air Quality Analyst, King’s College London. “The app gathers data from the London network, the most advanced urban air quality monitoring network in the world, which, combined with traffic data and topographical information, produces the most sophisticated model for pollution we have in the UK. We hope that the information provided by the app can be used to inform health risk assessments and contribute to scheduling work that reduces exposure. Crucially, it can also help employers and workers to monitor their progress in avoiding unhealthy levels of pollution.”

The launch of the app coincides with the start of the UK-wide Time to Breathe campaign that aims to draw the attention of employers, policy-makers and regulators in order for them to take the risks of air pollution to the health of outdoor workers seriously. It will provide free resources, including posters and advice, for workers and employers to use in making changes to reduce their exposure to harmful air pollution.

“Our campaign will highlight every employer’s duty of care for the risks from ambient air pollution. The regulator (HSE) tells us that it doesn’t regulate the ambient environment, and the recent Clean Air Strategy had little or nothing to say about people who spend their working lives outdoors. These workers are

calling on London-based employers to join those trialling Canairy and help us build an accurate picture of the exposure faced by outdoor workers. This information will be a cornerstone of future campaigns for better research into the links between occupation and health data. Given that we don’t even know how many outdoor workers there are in the UK, we need those authorities with responsibility for our health and environment to work together on this issue.”

Understanding ULEZ Everything you need to know about the new Ultra Low Emission Zone, by Chris Sykes, National Sales Manager, Moneybarn.Awards towards the end of 2018.

The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) launched in London on 8 April 2019. The ULEZ is central to the Mayor of London’s plans improve the health of Londoners by reducing rising air pollution levels. Most vehicles in the ULEZ will need to meet new, tighter emission standards or pay a daily charge to travel within the area.

What’s changing?

When the Ultra Low Emission Zone first comes into effect, it will initially cover the existing congestion charge zone in Central London, however, it will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The area covered by the ULEZ will be clearly signposted with road signs showing where it applies. Cameras will be in use to automatically read vehicle number plates entering the zone to check against the TfL database to see if they meet the ULEZ emission standards.

All vehicles, including LCV’s, who don’t meet these will have to pay the daily ULEZ charge. This will be in addition to the weekday Congestion Charge. From 25 October 2021, it will expand to an area bounded by the north and south circular roads.

The New Standards The ULEZ will be enforced based on the declared emissions of the vehicle rather than its age.

Vehicles included in the new emission standards are as follows: • Small vans (weighing up to and including 1.205 tonnes unladen weight) • Larger vans, 4x4 light utility vehicles and pickups (over 1.205 tonnes unladen weight up to and including 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight) • The new minimum emission standards are: • Petrol: Euro 4 • Diesel: Euro 6

in a fine of £160 but this will be reduced to £80 if paid within 14 days.

If your van is compliant to the current Low Emission Zone, it may not be with the new ULEZ standards. You can check your vehicle registration document to see your vehicle’s Euro emissions standard or NOx emissions. If these aren’t listed, you can use the TfL tool to help you find out.

Scrappage Schemes At the end of 2018, the Mayor of London announced a £23 million scrappage scheme for businesses with 10 or less employees to switch to cleaner vehicles.

Payments and Charges You will only have to pay charges if your LCV does not meet the new ULEZ exhaust emission standards, totalling £12.50 per day, plus the £11.50 congestion charge if you enter the city centre Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm. Failure to pay will result

If you are subject to ULEZ charges and payments, it is vital you remember the daily charges run from midnight to midnight. If you are driving in a ULEZ before midnight – from 11 pm for example – but don’t finish driving until 3 am, you will be charged for 2 days’ worth of driving in an Ultra Low Emission Zone.

If your vehicle is parked in a ULEZ but not being driven, you will not be subject to any charges during this time.

Under the City Hall scheme, funding will be available to scrap vans that do not comply with the new ULEZ standards, but which are driven into the zone regularly. This should help thousands of micro-business owners update their vehicles to meet the new emission standards and avoid paying the ULEZ daily charge.

In the Sights of Cybercriminals Construction and – by association – demolition has been identified as the second most targeted industry for email fraud attacks in a new survey.

Reboot Digital Marketing Agency reports on those findings and offers some timely advice to help demolition firms protect themselves.

According to Sophos, 70 percent of internet users use the same password for almost all the web services they use. It therefore comes as no surprise that ‘phishing’ is such a popular and effective tool for cyber-criminals against their victims, allowing them to assume control of all accounts – whether it be social media or online banking.

Predictably, as a group of individuals within departments ‘Lower-level employees’, such as customer service representatives, were subject to 67 percent of highly targeted attacks, with those in

directors and department managers may be targeted disproportionately more often.

Interestingly, when considering which industries are targeted the most by email fraud, ‘Pharmaceutical drug manufacturers’ came out on top with 71 highly targeted attacks per company over a period of three months, on average. This sector is closely followed by ‘Construction’ with 61 attacks per company.

As a result, Reboot Digital Marketing Agency has gathered five top tips for avoiding malware and phishing scams when at work: •

Know what to look for: Pay close attention to attachments,

advertisements and pop-up alerts, ensuring you only open what you trust. Train users to spot malicious emails and websites by knowing what to look out for.

Avoid unsolicited links and attachments: Most commonly, you should know the sender of an email and trust the source it is coming from. If unsure, go with the assumption that it is best to avoid opening emails from an unknown source/ sender altogether. And although a lot of companies employ malware scanning features, you shouldn’t be solely reliant on this.

Turn off email HTML: Adding HTML can sometimes automatically run malware scripts within an email once

it has been opened. For this reason, you may choose to disable it, lowering the risk of an attack.

Scan external drives: Many USB and external hard-drives can hold malware and spread across the workplace onto other computers. To be extra vigilant, it is recommended that you scan all external devices with anti-virus software each time you connect an external portal to a computer.

Regularly change your password: Though this may seem obvious, it is easy to forget to regularly update your passwords or be reluctant to do so in fear of forgetting them.

However, for security purposes it is good practice to change your passwords every 90 days.

Kodak Contract a Picture of Safety Clearance of the 12-hectare former Kodak factory site in Harrow has begun in the first step towards realising the masterplan for the ‘Harrow View East’ development.

SafeSite Facilities, contracted

by Rye Demolition on behalf of Barratt London, spent one week in March 2019 securing the site to make it safe for site personnel and pedestrians during the demolition of a perimeter wall.

The majority of work was carried out at night and traffic management measures were put in place to restrict vehicle traffic during the installation of high visibility concrete barriers and heavy duty mesh fencing around the site perimeter. Warning lights and access signage controlled the safe flow of pedestrian traffic. The site was made operational in all weather conditions using specialist sheeting to reduce dust and debris whilst demolishing the wall.

Major asbestos removal to all the buildings was carried out by the Rye Group before

ON SITE demolition and clearance. The Rye Group also stabilised and prepared the site for re-construction. In line with the project’s environmental targets, contaminated soils were restored for re-use and all demolition waste materials will be recycled and reprocessed.

The masterplan for the entire former Kodak industrial complex includes 1,800 homes, a school, shops and commercial space.

A joint venture between Barratt London and the Hyde Group has secured reserved matters permission for 460 high quality new homes, 40 percent of which will be affordable.

There will also be significant landscaping in the form of the “green link” - an expansive open space with pedestrian and cycle routes that will span the length of the site.

In addition, a new energy centre retaining the iconic Kodak chimney will accommodate all future energy needs while also providing over 600 m2 of flexible community space.

Plans for the former industrial site have been worked up in close consultation with Harrow Council and the local community to create an improved scheme.

Future phases are expected to deliver more new homes, offices, retail and later living accommodation, while also creating up to 1,500 new jobs and delivering £10 million worth of infrastructure improvements.

The planning application also includes new streets and other means of access and circulation around the development, highway improvements along with car parking and cycle storage.

“We are delighted to have played a part in enabling this landmark space to be ‘project-ready’. Our brief was

to secure the site, whilst allowing appropriate access for personnel and keeping members of the public safe,” says Greig McGarva, sales team leader, SafeSite Facilities.

“This was a huge task given the size and location of the site in a busy area of Harrow but it was vital we carried out the work meticulously as the measures we have installed will remain in place for the duration of the development.”

Demolition Kickstarts Housing The former warehouse facilities of Ridgeons building merchants on Cromwell Road, Cambridge will shortly be demolished, making way for a large new housing neighbourhood, as Cambridge City Council looks to increase council homes in the region.

Local firm Mick George Ltd will imminently complete the demolition works on behalf of Hill Partnerships Ltd. It is understood that Mick George Ltd has made considered efforts within the scope of the works to recycle much of the demolition

materials for re-use, minimising traffic congestion within the area.

More than 200 new homes are set to be built, with as many as 90 allocated for Council accommodation. A mixture of apartment blocks and houses will be created, alongside a park running through the centre of

the site, car parking, a community building and access to the Chisholm Trail cycle route also.

The new homes will be developed

by Cambridge Investment Partnership, which is an equal, 50:50 Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) between Cambridge City Council and Hill Investment Partnerships, set up to optimise the use of the council’s property through investment in residential, commercial, and other uses to achieve social and financial returns.

The 3.3-hectare former Ridgeon’s site will enable the council to take a big step towards delivering its programme to build 500 new council homes in five years, using the £70 million funding secured in the Cambridgeshire and

ON SITE Peterborough devolution deal, in addition to its own resources.

The development will include at least 40 percent of the new homes as social rented council homes, owned and managed by the council, and let to tenants on the housing needs register at rents no higher than the Local Housing Allowance.

Barking Blasted RVA has overseen the demolition of two 55 metre high chimneys at Barking Reach Power Station, in East London, as the site moves one step closer to its new lease of life.

The concrete stacks with steel flues were brought to ground in only 10 seconds each, via the controlled use of approximately 10 kg of explosives.

Mindful of nearby stakeholders – including a petroleum fuels depot only 200 metres away – the early Sunday morning demolition was coordinated to minimise disruption

and ensure maximum safety standards. With the 17 hectare site visible from the A13, road closures were enforced, and the collapse mechanism was designed to avoid any structural damage to the main turbine halls – which remain intact.

Five 2,500 tonne boilers (heat recovery steam generators – HRSGs) have also been felled

ON SITE using traditional demolition techniques. This work was carried out in the late evening, over a six week period, when the peak rush hour traffic had passed.

The sequential demolition was planned by RVA in an exercise which began back in 2014. Engaged by Barking Power Ltd – part of Canadian firm Atco – RVA was initially appointed to undertake various front-end engineering services, including costings studies and the provision of help to derate the site. The coal-fired assets were closed in the same year, before various options were investigated for the site’s future.

The demolition project was then officially kick-started last year, with RVA returning to deliver its suite of works execution services, including project and EHS management.

“We have now overseen more than 770 decommissioning projects worldwide, but that doesn’t mean they are not without their challenges. Every scheme requires meticulous planning and management, to ensure a safe, quality-led and cost-effective approach with minimal impact on the surrounding environment,” says RVA’s managing director Richard Vann. “With Barking, there was the added complexity of protecting the turbine hall and its contents, as the site looks set to embark on a new and very different life, having been acquired by the City of London Corporation.”

In December 2018, media reports confirmed that the City of London Corporation had acquired the site and were considering its future use as an iconic wholesale food market.

DSL on course for degree Leeds-based Demolition Services Ltd is carrying out the sensitive demolition of dozens of buildings within a university campus whilst ensuring that students go undisturbed. Demolition magazine reports.

Demolition work has started on Northampton University’s Park Campus to prepare the site for a new housing development. The campus was home to local, national and worldwide students for 25 years, before it was relocated to the new £330 million Waterside Campus on the Avon Nunn Mills site alongside the River Nene as part of the University’s bid to secure its future as a leading higher education institution.

Leeds-based Demolition Services Ltd (DSL) will be taking down more than 35 buildings, including the Pitchley Building and John Clare Hall, although the current Student Residences which house over 800 students will remain in place.

“We are very aware that students are living within the immediate vicinity while demolition works and site clearance are taking place,” says DSL Health and Safety Manager Charlene Murray. “We have planned very thoroughly to minimise noise and disruption as much as possible to ensure we respect people living and working in the area.”

After asbestos removal and stripping out work has taken place, the demolition work will be carried out using a combination of 30 and 40 tonne excavators with low noise and vibration levels. The resulting aggregate materials will then be recycled, with the concrete crushed on site and re-used to level the area and leave it clean and uncontaminated.

The demolition work, which is expected to take a year to complete, is paving the way for the Persimmon Homes Scholars Green development of more than 675 two, three, four and five bedroomed homes, including social housing. This is expected to create more jobs locally, during both the demolition and construction phases, as well as enabling

more first time buyers to get on the property ladder.

“Scholars Green represents a major redevelopment project for Northampton, breathing new life into this part of the town,” concludes Simon McDonald, regional managing director for Persimmon Homes Midlands.

“Meticulous preparation of this large site has been key to the successful development of muchneeded new homes and amenities, so we are pleased to be working along DSL in this important phase of the project.”

BAUMA 2019 The Liebherr display at Bauma pushed the boundaries of what an exhibition stand can look like. The exhibits on display, meanwhile, pushed the innovation envelope even further. Demolition magazine’s Mark Anthony is in awe.

If Bauma is Digger Disneyland, then the Liebherr stand is Snow White’s Castle (appropriate given that the design of that castle is based upon the Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany). Like that castle, the Liebherr stand looms large over the entire Bauma showground; the logo on the slatted side of the four-storey, semi-permanent office block from which the company conducts its business every bit as recognisable as the castle backdrop to the Disney logo. Like Disney, Liebherr is a masterclass in branding; a pioneer and an innovator; an enviable marriage of style AND substance. The triennial Bauma show, which takes place in Liebherr’s back yard, is the company’s opportunity to shine. And at Bauma 2019, the company shone like never before.

It is easy to get caught up in the magnitude of the Liebherr stand; to wax lyrical about the sheer size and volume of machines shoe-horned into the stand. I can certainly vouch for the size of the stand. I tried to film it in a single take walkthrough. Even missing out the numerous cranes, the drilling rigs, truck mixers, a good many excavators and most of

the wheel loaders, that single walkthrough was more than four minutes long. Had I included all the exhibits, I’d still be filming today.

But size isn’t everything. And amongst the machines on display were several making their global debut and reconfirming Liebherr’s position at the very cutting edge of construction equipment development.

Generation 8 At the beginning of the year, Liebherr launched seven new crawler excavator models under 50 tonnes. The Generation 8 series, which has gone into production at Liebherr-France SAS in Colmar, is made up of seven models ranging from 22 to 45 tonnes: R 922, R 924, R 926, R 930, R 934, R 938 and R 945.

The R 930 that was on display on the Liebherr stand at Bauma complies with Stage V emission standards and – together with the R 926 – is based on a specific platform developed by Liebherr. The R 926 and the R 930 have an operating weight of between 26 and 36 tonnes, and achieve a power of 150 kW and 180 kW respectively. The backhoe bucket capacities vary from 0.55 to 1.75 m3 on the R 926 and between 1 and 2.15 m3 on the R 930. The R 926 and R 930 models are available worldwide with the relevant engines.

To achieve Stage V emissions standards, the R 926 replaces the Stage IV excavator of the same name that was launched in 2016. The R 930 is a brand new weight category for the crawler excavator series developed and produced by Liebherr-France SAS. This was developed in answer to

BAUMA 2019 customers’ needs for 30-tonne excavators: The easy-to-transport, versatile and efficient R 930 crawler excavator more than meets the expectations of customers and operators.

A Higher Power The digging forces and tractive forces of the undercarriage and the swing torque of the upper-carriage have been significantly increased compared to the previous generation. Thanks to these improvements, the R 926 and R 930 crawler excavators achieve a much higher level of performance.

In conjunction with the launch of this new generation of excavators, a new work equipment concept was devised that optimises the load curve and inertia of the swivelling drive in order to reduce fuel consumption.

The R 926 and R 930 crawler excavators are available with a variety of robust X-shaped undercarriage types. The crawler chassis require zero maintenance.

The track rollers are lubricated for life and the automatic central lubrication system makes it possible to maximise both component service life and productivity.

Maximised Safety The operator benefits from an ultra-spacious, temperaturecontrolled cab. To make work particularly convenient, the excavators have pneumatic seats with vertical and longitudinal suspension and a high-resolution, extremely user-friendly 7” touchscreen. The windscreen can be fully lowered.

LED technology has completely replaced the halogen headlights, increasing the operating life and reducing the electricity consumption – while also dramatically improving the lighting.

The range of lighting is available in the form of separate packages, with the high-performance LED+

lighting packages also available as an option.

The unobstructed panoramic visibility and the monitoring cameras at the rear and sides ensure maximum safety in the driver’s work environment. The foldaway console makes it easy and safe to access the cab. The certified ROPS cab structure provides robust protection in the event of the crawler excavator tipping over.

versions of the excavator. The windscreen and right-hand window are made of tinted laminated glass.

The machine has been carefully designed to offer even higher standards of safety. The uppercarriage is now accessed via a secured access platform (either standard or optional extra depending on the region).

BAUMA 2019 crawler excavators also boast a new maintenance concept with maintenance points that can be accessed from the ground. The engine oil, hydraulic oil, fuel and urea levels can be read straight off the display for convenience.

Aiming for Autonomy If the Generation 8 excavators are glimpse of the now, then two other items on display on the mammoth Liebherr stand afforded a glimpse of the very near future.

The company used the show to unveil the innovative, adaptive concept INTUSI to the public for the first time, which – the company claims – “will revolutionise the communication with and between construction machines”. INTUSI connects Liebherr construction machinery and material handlers to the Internet of Things (IoT) and is combining an intelligent operating logic with a smart machine intelligence.

INTUSI stands for INTuitive USer Interface. The objective during the development was to provide machine operators with a future-focused machine interface with Liebherr’s characteristic transparency and clear overall logic. Going forward the concept will be used in all Liebherr earthmoving and material handlers.

Yet, even as the company is launching a new interface to make the life of the operator simpler, safer and more productive, it is also working on technology that could ultimately replace operators altogether.

Central to the company’s working demonstration was the 7XX autonomous dozer, its independence clear for all to see through its lack of an operator’s cab.

Like many of its fellow exhibitors at the Bauma show, Liebherr was keen to stress that this machine was a concept.

However, while most of its rivals showed their concept machines in a static presentation, Liebherr’s autonomous dozer was fully functional throughout the show, operating in a relatively confined space whilst surrounded by thousands of eager onlookers. This not only suggests that the technology behind the 7XX is fully working, it also demonstrates Liebherr’s confidence in the unit’s ability to operate safely around people and other machines.

That machine, together with the new Generation 8 excavators, the huge rigid dumptruck and the massive mining face shovel at the front of the stand attracted considerable interest throughout the duration of the week-long exhibition. But there is no question that the true star of the show was Liebherr itself.

Green Giant Amidst a sea of high reach demolition excavators on display at the Bauma show, the new 870 R-HDD from Sennebogen stood out; and for more than just its striking green livery.

The name Sennebogen might not be the first that springs to mind when discussion turns to the subject of high reach demolition excavators.

After all, the company is perhaps best known for its material handling excavators that are popular in continental scrap yards.

As a result, the company is wellversed in producing machines capable of withstanding a hostile work environment. They are experienced in producing excavators that push the boundaries of reach and work

height. And they also produce a very smart line in both tilting and elevating cabs. So the move from scrap handlers to demolition machines is less a leap and more a simple and wholly predictable step forward.

During Bauma, that step forward was showcased in the form of the 870 R-HDD, an extremely smartlooking high reach excavator with a reach of 36 metres.

The machine is based upon the 870 E demolition material handler that was introduced at the end of

2017. Sennebogen is now offering their customers, ex works, the 870 E with the original 33 metre long front end or alternatively in a 36 metre configurations with a working load of 4 tonnes.

The new, longer attachment consists of a 19.5 metre basic boom with a quick-change facility and a 2.5 metre intermediate boom, along with the 12.5 metre stick with reversing mechanism. This gives the equipment an overall vertical reach of 36 metres and a boom range of 20 metres.

The unit is powered by a 261 kW diesel engine. Thanks to the telescoping crawler undercarriage, the 4.2 metre and 2.6 metre tracks can be adapted. The attachment and the rear ballast can be removed in order to transport the 155 tonne machine. This reduces the transport weight to 66 tonnes.

The Case for Bio-Methane A futuristiclooking wheel loader concept from Case might just have been the star of the show.

Demolition magazine’s Mark Anthony was there to witness the unveiling.

If someone had told me prior to the Bauma exhibition that one of the most interesting and exciting machines at the show would be a wheel loader from Case, I probably would have laughed or at least waited for the inevitable punch-line.

After all, a wheel loader is a wheel loader. And when you’re competing against the likes of Caterpillar and

Liebherr, making an innovation stand out from the crowd is always going to be an uphill struggle.

That video notched up 250,000 views on Instagram in just 24 hours. At the time of writing, it has racked up an astonishing 818,000 impressions on the platform. So what is so special about the ProjectTETRA wheel loader?

The concept machine includes a methane-powered engine, specially designed and developed by sister brand FPT Industrial for construction applications. With a maximum power output of 171 kW, it delivers the same power and torque as its equivalent diesel engine found in the CASE 821G wheel loader. That biomethane is produced in biodigesters from waste products such as waste food, wood chippings and animal waste.

“We’ve been researching sustainable fuel sources for our construction machinery for many years,” explains Carl Gustaf Goränsson, President of Construction. “Biomethane was the most logical choice for the wheel loader. We needed a fuel that could provide the drive and power that our customers demand. The fuel needed to be readily available, easy to refuel and power through a full day of work. We wouldn’t comprise on performance, so we set our designers quite a challenge.”

ProjectTETRA not only uses a sustainable energy source but also benefits the environment in other ways. The methane-powered wheel loader concept produces 95 percent less CO2 when running on biomethane, 90 percent less nitrogen dioxides and 99 percent lower particulate matter than a diesel-powered equivalent. It delivers an 80 percent reduction in overall emissions and also achieves a 50 percent reduction in drive-by noise levels.

“We don’t believe in developing technology for technology’s sake,” continues Goränsson. “Our innovations must solve real-world challenges in a simple and straightforward way. ProjectTETRA is suited to do so in common job sites; agricultural environments, waste handling centres and

recycling businesses are perfect locations for a biogas production plant, providing a free source of fuel for the machines working on site.

But biomethane isn’t the only option.

ProjectTETRA will run on network methane too, providing access to lower emissions than diesel, even if onsite biomethane production is not an option. This is important as we see changing regulations in some regions.”

ProjectTETRA’s cab features wraparound glazing and a high visibility roof panel, increasing the total glazed area by 16 percent when compared to a standard wheel loader. All-around visibility is achieved with the use of viewing cameras instead of wing mirrors. These are automatically linked to the direction of the machine and viewed on the A-pillar mounted displays.

The uncluttered design means all controls are accessed through ergonomic joysticks and an integrated, armrest-mounted, colour touchscreen monitor, which adds to the feeling of space and a panoramic view.

An exclusive partnership with Michelin led to the development of innovative airless concept tyres for ProjectTETRA. Constructed from pure rubber and a patented composite material in a honeycomb spoke design, the tyre/wheel fusion also features built-in suspension.

BAUMA 2019 conditions present in construction environments. In addition, the airless tyres reduce overall machine weight and a large footprint delivers low contact pressure. Advanced connectivity is achieved with integrated sensors, providing a stream of real-time data to both the operator and the control room. When active, the integrated sidewall lights are illuminated and also function as an additional safety feature.

Of course, as anyone that follows developments within the automotive sector will testify, concept cars do not always make it off the drawing board and into production. Case is confident this will not happen with ProjectTETRA. Indeed, the company claims that this machine – or something very like it – will be commercially available in the next two years.

It’s Electrifying Diesel’s vice-like grip on the demolition and construction industry’s fuel needs diminishes with each passing year. And at Bauma 2019, several manufacturers suggested that the future is electric.

It seemed that every stand at Bauma 2019 this year had its own hashtag as each manufacturer attempted to corner the social media world by encouraging visitors to leap aboard its specific bandwagon. But the #electrifiedbauma hashtag adopted

by Wacker Neuson was more than a mere marketing gimmick. In fact, it was a signifier of a wider development taking place within the industry as manufacturers strive to replace the increasingly unpopular and untenable diesel fuel upon which it has relied for as long as most of us can remember.

Wacker Neuson could back up its hashtag too. The latest additions to the zero emission series are the wheel dumper DW15e, the zero tail mini-excavator EZ17e, and the excavator EZ26e’s “technology study” concept machine.

According to sales director Alexander Greschner, it is already possible to operate an entire construction site free of emissions with the zero-emission series, which includes the wheel loader, track and wheel dumper, miniexcavator and even the batterypowered rammer, battery-powered plates and, in future, the internal vibrator systems for concrete consolidation.

With the zero tail excavator EZ26e, which was first presented to the public at Bauma, Wacker Neuson provides the battery-operated counterpart to the conventional excavator EZ26. The EZ26e is currently still located in the phase of a technology study. Even more certain is the availability of the second zero tail miniexcavator EZ17e, which will go into production in 2019 and be available from autumn onwards.

BAUMA 2019 Both electric excavators fulfil the requirements of equipment rental yards, as they do not require additional training for their service personnel for the maintenance of the machines. If the excavators are operating in one location, for example at an interior demolition, a lithium-ion battery can be charged simultaneously at the household socket or at a mains power connection (express charging process), which increases the machine’s running time over the whole workday. Simultaneously, both zero tail excavators maintain their weight class, inclusive of the battery, and can thus continue to be transported on a car trailer.

Due to their compact dimensions (the battery has been integrated into the motor compartment),

the electric excavators can be operated in confined spatial conditions and offer more freedom of movement. This means that the operator does not have to worry about damaging the machine while working close to walls or in confined spaces. The rear of the excavator never protrudes beyond the undercarriage. Therefore, both of the excavators, EZ26e and EZ17e, are excellent for tunnel construction applications, demolition and reconstruction or repair work, and interior room restorations.

The articulated electric wheel dumper DW15e with 4 wheel drive and a payload of up to 1.5 tonnes, provides a sensible solution for the transport of material. The DW15e is equipped with an electric motor

for the drive system and another for the work hydraulics, in order to appropriately and independently take on output as needed and minimize energy consumption.

When braking the machine or when driving downhill, the energy is fed back into the battery through modern recuperation technology.

The energy is therefore not, as usual, converted into heat but is used to charge the battery.

While Wacker Neuson has focused its attention on truly compact machines, Caterpillar incorporated similar technology into the 906 electric concept wheel loader which is powered not by a diesel engine but by a sealed lithium-ion battery and dedicated high-torque electric motors. That means it emits no particulate matter, no NOx, no CO2 and limited noise, making it

BAUMA 2019 an ideal loader for work in urban environments or public areas.

The 906 electric concept’s 41 kW battery takes about three hours to charge. On a fully charged battery, the concept machine can operate in a medium-duty application, such as mixed truck loading or material handling, for up to 4.5 hours (up to 6.5 hours with a one-hour charge during the lunch break).

When the next generation of the 906 electric concept featuring a larger battery is introduced, working times are expected to increase to eight hours, in line with many working shifts. Additional built-in charge modes may be available as well, including a rapidboost mode to take maximum advantage of short recharge

periods when the machine is idle and a slower overnight mode to condition the lithium-ion batteries and extend battery pack life.

The goal with any fully electric product is to achieve performance levels comparable to those of its diesel-powered equivalent — and testing so far shows that to be the case with the 906 electric concept. Though the concept machine weighs in slightly heavier than the 906M, that’s expected to change with the next generation concept.

Thanks to a powerful, quick-responding electric drive, the loader can reach top speeds of 20

km/hour for fast cycle times on the job. Batteries are sealed and maintenance-free, with no need to monitor liquid levels or add water.

Service demands are minimal, with only hydraulic system servicing and greasing required.

BAUMA 2019

The Doosan stand at Bauma 2019 afforded operators the opportunity to drive an excavator. But it was an operator experience with a twist.

Pop along to the Doosan stand, they said. You can operate a 40 tonne excavator, they said. And they meant it…sort of.

In what was one of the highlights of the show, Doosan utilised 5G technology to allow operators to drive a Doosan DX380LC-5 40 tonne crawler excavator located over 8,500 km away in Incheon in South Korea from an operator’s booth on the Bauma stand in Munich.

Doosan’s 5G Whizz This TeleOperation has been codeveloped with LG U+, the South Korean telecommunications and data services company. Although Caterpillar also allowed visitors to their stand to operate a machine located thousands of miles away, Doosan claims the TeleOperation demonstration on its stand is the first to remotely control a machine across such a large distance between locations which have a time difference of eight hours, using 5G telecommunications technology.

With its ultra-reliability and low latency (signal delay), the new 5G network overcomes these issues in the Doosan system, providing 10 times faster bandwidth and 10 times lower latency than the 4G network.

BAUMA 2019 transmission module with fast video transfer (with encoding and decoding), an important factor in reducing the time delay. LG U+ has also introduced new modules providing low latency image processing to further minimize the time delay. Another factor in creating more effective remote control is the use of Doosan’s innovative electrohydraulic technology in the DX380LC-5 excavator.

Of course, there is one small obstacle that potential UK buyers would need to overcome before attempting to adopt this technology within these shores. While the US and South Korea are among the first countries with commercial

5G networks, rollout in the UK is yet to commence. However, the country’s biggest mobile network – EE - has announced that it will be launching a 5G network in London, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Belfast, Birmingham and Manchester this summer.

The DX380LC-5 excavator being remotely controlled at Bauma is still a standard machine, which allows Doosan to guarantee the performance and the compatibility of third party attachments and other equipment installed on the excavator. It is also possible to carry out both normal operation and TeleOperation with same machine.

The demolition robot pioneer used the Bauma exhibition to introduce European customers to its new and dedicated range of hydraulic breakers.

Brokk Breaks Loose Brokk has launched its own line of hydraulic breakers. The new Brokk Hydraulic Breaker (BHB) series is purpose-matched with the company’s full range of remotecontrolled demolition robots. In essence, each robot is designed from the attachment backward, providing the exact amount of flow, pressure, backpressure, and downward force that the hammer requires, which

Bobcat Goes Remote Remotely-controlled machines were all the rage at Bauma 2019. But Bobcat’s take on the system – which directly targets the demolition sector – was especially eyecatching. tSkid steer giant Bobcat has the demolition sector in its sights with the launch of a new remote control system that is compatible with all skid-steer, compact track and all wheel steer loader models equipped with the company’s Selectable Joystick Controls. Bobcat claims to be the first manufacturer to introduce a remote control system as original ‘Plug&Play’ equipment, rather than offering it as an add-on

development from a third party. The new system will be commercially available later this year.

The new plug and play system comprises an easily portable and industrial radio remote control solution that can be mounted and dismounted on machines in a matter of minutes, leaving behind the standard machine in its original form. Being able to control the

loader from outside the cab offers the operator a completely new and alternative opportunity in terms of visibility and communication.

Not only does it provide direct sight of the progress of work with a range of attachments, further increasing the versatility of the loader and a comprehensive range of attachments. Remote control aims to increase safety, comfort and productivity by distancing the operator from dust, noise, vibrations and other hazards encountered at the workface or on job sites that require special safety precautions. Work can be done faster with higher precision and, in some applications, with fewer personnel on the job site. For increased safety, the system also features an emergency stop button and drop and tilt detection.

BAUMA 2019 Every remote-control kit is protected by a dedicated password, with two-way communication providing all the important information about the loader (such as fuel and oil status, warnings, etc.) on a 3.5-inch transflective colour backlit LCD display. The system provides most of the functions that can be performed via direct loader operation, including throttle, light, creep and float controls. There is also speed management control to ensure easier operation in certain applications (such as trenching, tilling, scarifying and so on). The system in very intuitive to use and the training for end users will be provided by Bobcat dealers.

Bauma 2019 will be memorable for many reasons. But one of the key reasons was the sheer volume of demolition attachments on display. There was an outbreak of breakers; a cornucopia of cutter crushers; a proliferation of pulverisers; a multitude of munchers.

There was also a lot of grabs, grapples and a variety of other work tools of all shapes and sizes making their international debut. So rather than attempting to include specific details of all of them, we present a photo montage of some of the very best.

Environmental Double-Standard Bauma exhibitors continued to make huge environmental strides, producing equipment and power units that are cleaner-running than anything that has gone before. But those strides were partially outweighed by the environmental impact of the show itself. Mark Anthony reports.

Digger Disneyland or unconquerable foot-slog across three-quarters of Bavaria?

Regardless of your personal take on the Bauma exhibition, there can be little question that the latest iteration of the triennial event was not just the biggest but also the best. More than 3,700 exhibitors occupied 614,000 square metres of indoor and outdoor exhibition space and attracted visitors from an astonishing 200 countries around the world.

This was not just an exhibition: it was a celebration of man’s ingenuity; an acknowledgement of the industry’s ability to turn imagination into innovation; a global gathering of engineering excellence the likes of which has not seen before.

Against such an astonishing backdrop, it feels churlish and almost disrespectful to highlight any negatives. But regular readers of this newsletter know that this

is my stock in trade and will likely expect nothing else.

My first point is not so much a criticism as an observation.

German Efficiency Within the vast, sprawling confines of the Messe Munchen exhibition centre, everything runs like clockwork and is the very epitome of German efficiency. When I registered for the show, I did so using my LinkedIn profile which automatically filled out my details and saved me time. Despite the vast daily crowds, I passed through the turnstiles more quickly here than I have ever done at the considerably smaller Hillhead show.

Show signposting was faultless, staff were helpful and – thankfully – multi-lingual. And while they offered only a temporary respite from the endless hike around the show, a network of moving walkways offered at least some assistance.

All that being said, by my fourth day I was actively fighting the desire to punch in the head anyone that walked into frame while I was taking a photo; anyone that walked too slowly, stopped suddenly, or who changed direction without warning.

BAUMA 2019 I also have a personal issue with paying six Euros for an “apple juice” in which apples were less an ingredient and more a passing acquaintance of the coloured water within. But these are minor gripes of a renowned curmudgeon.

German Gridlock Outside the exhibition centre, however, it was a different story.

Both Google Maps and the iOS version on my iPhone claimed that our Air BnB accommodation was a 12-minute drive away from the West entrance to the show. In five days, we never achieved it in under an hour. On the Tuesday night, it took nearer three. Roads were blocked in every conceivable direction by countless taxis and, although I am basing this purely on personal experience, it appeared that Uber cars had effectively been

banned from the showground and were instead clogging up approach roads by double-parking while waiting for their passengers to navigate the ensuing chaos on foot.

Spare hotel rooms were about as common as hen’s teeth and any that could be found last-minute had tripled or even quadrupled their rates. You have to be pretty enthusiastic about plant and equipment to pay more than 400 Euros a night from something akin to a Travelodge.

According to a very quick Google search, Munich has a population of 1.4 million people. The influx of more than 50 percent more people for a week is always going to place a strain upon local infrastructure.

But I left with the very real feeling that while the Messe Munchen can

take Bauma in its stride, I am no longer convinced that Munich itself can do likewise.

Clean Freak As I said previously, that is merely an observation. My second criticism, however, is more than that. It is addressing a veritable herd of elephants in the room that everyone seems very eager to gloss over.

There were many themes at Bauma 2019, and telematics, automation and autonomous machine control were key among them.

But the over-riding theme was the way in which machines are fuelled and powered. Stage V regulations loom on the horizon like a gigantic clean-freak that is determined to ensure that even the most powerful machines in the industry run on

And that’s a good thing. Even the die-hards amongst us that still long for the roar of a smoky diesel engine know that ever-increasing levels of cleanliness is the right and responsible thing to do. There is just one small problem with that ambition.

In the Flesh Major manufacturers such as Case, Caterpillar, Hitachi, Komatsu, Liebherr, Volvo and a whole host of others have invested billions between them to make their machines as clean-running as current technology will possibly allow. And yet, for a week in Germany, much of that hard work was negated as owners, operators, enthusiasts, tyre-kickers and – of course – journalists descended upon Munich once more in

whatever form of planet-destroying form of transport took their fancy.

Perhaps the greatest irony is this. Several manufacturers – including both Caterpillar and Doosan – demonstrated the ability to remotely-control a machine literally thousands of miles away.

Those manufacturers have afforded us the ability to safely operate, monitor and maintain machines on the other side of the planet.

Yet, for some reason, in order to evaluate or report upon those same machines, we still feel the need to travels thousands of miles to see them “in the flesh”, neatly polished and standing still in an exhibition hall.

The next Bauma is scheduled to return to Munich in 2022. All things being equal, I will be there.

But this time, I might just take a bicycle.

KIT TALK JCB opted for an uncharacteristically low-key launch for the three latest additions to its X Series of hydraulic excavators. Yet perhaps those machines merited more of a fanfare.

Mark Anthony reports.

The latest press launch held at its World Headquarters was, by JCB’s standards, a low-key affair; lacking in the pre-launch hype that has accompanied recent product introductions from the UK manufacturer; devoid of the pyrotechnics and razzamatazz that accompanied more recent product unveilings. Even the company’s chief innovation officer Tim Burnhope – a man who has traditionally channelled Steve Jobs in both confidence and showmanship – seemed content to let the new products just speak for themselves.

Admittedly, the new 131X, 140X and 150X excavators are not the JCB Hydradig, a machine that achieved the impossible by making the wheeled excavator both interesting and desirable.

Neither are they the Hi-Viz dumper, a product that redefined the very essence of what a site dumper should look like and how it should perform. But the three new excavators, which will compete in the highly competitive 13 to 15 tonne operating weight class, will outsell the Hydradig and will be more important within the JCB product range than the Hi-Viz dumper. Furthermore, the 131X, 140X and 150X don’t just follow on from the two initial X Series machines. Rather, they

KIT TALK build upon them; harnessing the lessons learned on those models to make the three new machines even better.

Testing Time At the time of the launch of the 20 tonne class 220X, there were those

that questioned how JCB could talk about a new excavator series when there was just one model.

The 210X which followed fairly soon after will have done little to disperse any such criticism.

In truth, JCB probably could have come to market with a five model

X Series range. But it didn’t. It didn’t because it was determined that the three latest models would be launched when they were right. Now they are. And the manufacturer knows they are not just because of the use of proven technology, powertrain and iron baked into the new machines; but also because the three new models have undergone a level of pre-launch testing that has pushed them to their working limits and beyond.

As an example, machines have been strapped to a shaker rig that replicated more than 15,000 hours of non-stop tracking across rough terrain. That test was carried out not to test key components such as the engine, transmission or the hydraulics. It was carried out to ensure that comparatively unimportant items such as wing mirrors, door hinges and catches and the boxing ring mounted on top of the counterweight could withstand the rigours of constant on-site vibration. When the manufacturer was satisfied that they could, the three new machines got the green light. Such attention to detail (which included placing a 110 kg operator-shaped dummy in the seat during the shake test) is precisely where increased residual values are born.

CommandPlus Cab The 131X, 140X and 150X excavators are direct replacements for the popular JS131, JS130 and JS145. The 131X will retains the 55kW JCB EcoMAX engine, while the 140X and 150X are powered by an 81kW JCB EcoMAX engine.

At 2.5 metres wide, the new models are 80 mm wider allowing the installation of the much larger CommandPlus cab seen on the 220X, giving the operator an environment which is both spacious and comfortable. The cab - which is located on four hydraulic cab mounts - is 15 percent larger, incorporating the ROPS frame

within its structure and it has easily replaceable flat glazing all round.

According to JCB, in cab noise is reduced by almost two thirds compared to the previous JS130 and JS145.

The fully-sealed pressurised cab comes with a choice of comfortable Grammer seats, with heating and cooling options now available. The operator also benefits from seat mounted servo levers. A new command pod to the right of the seat that brings together all switches and controls in a single seat-mounted unit.

A new 7” monitor with intuitive menus and functionality can be accessed through an automotivestyle rotary controller.

Familiar Look The three new machines maintain the now familiar X Series appearance, with fuel and hydraulic tanks now mounted inside secondary body panels. All service access doors are double-

skinned with zinc-plated contact surfaces for improved durability.

The hydraulic tank also includes

a new baffling system to reduce oil aeration and the 2,000-hour filter life of the larger X Series

The power boost duration has also been increased from 3 to 9 seconds, giving maximum bucket and dipper tear-out for longer. To match these improvements, the hydraulic oil cooler size has been increased by 15 percent for superior cooling performance wherever the machine is working in the world.

The 140X and 150X also come with a larger Kawasaki hydraulic pump that can run at lower engine rpm, which means for every litre of fuel used, six per cent more material is moved. Fine tuning of the machines’ Kayaba valve block delivers improvements in flow sharing for multifunctional use. An automatic engine shut-off has been incorporated to further reduce fuel

Customers can now order the X Series machines with all of the required wiring to fit GPS and machine control systems from Topcon, Leica and Trimble, while the excavators can also be built Steelwrist-ready, for use with a tiltrotator.

Rotar Ramplified Worsley Plant, the UK importer of Rotar attachments, walked away from the NFDC Awards clutching an innovation award for a new product that is not scheduled to be launched officially until Bauma 2019.

RAMPLIFIER technology will be introduced with Rotar’s new RCC Concrete Crusher. Using new technology, the system is said to double the power and increases the cutting power from 350 to 700 bar.

The system has been developed following input and discussions with our customers and dealers to ensure we are offering them the best product to meet their needs.

When the pressure reaches 250/270 bar, the RAMPLIFIER is activated.

This slows the cutting process down, but at this stage, the RCC is already biting through the concrete you are cutting so it becomes much stronger.

It hammers at a high frequency, which has a positive effect to break into the concrete. RAMPLIFIER is installed inside the cylinder rod so it is fully integrated and can’t be tampered with. It’s easy to access if needed and results in a lot less downtime. On machines where no booster is used, then the attachment needs a larger cylinder and therefore more oil, which leads to slower cycle times.

The RCC uses parts already available in our workshop. The rotation components are used in our existing attachment range and therefore always in stock – these recurring parts have a long history and are approved technology.

The RCC Concrete Crusher is ideal for primary demolition needs when you need to cut concrete. Built for heavy industrial demolition, it will be used by larger demolition companies for jobs involving thick concrete with reinforcement.

Other features include replaceable teeth, longer cutting blades, and adjustable cutting blades.

Komatsu Unveils PC490HRD-11 High Reach Komatsu reaches new heights with new EU Stage V emissions compliant high reach excavator Komatsu has unveiled the new PC490HRD-11, the latest in Komatsu’s range of heavy-duty demolition excavators. According to the manufacturer, it brings “best in class” working height to the 60 tonne machine sector and can be configured in six different working arrangements.

It carries a 2.0 tonne demolition tool up to a height of 32 metres, a 3.34 tonne tool up to 28 metres and it can work with a 5.0 tonne demolition tool up to 17.4 metres. This new machine will allow operators to work through the widest possible range with optimal control and safety.

Designed and developed, incorporating customer feedback,

Climbing High Hydrodemolition specialist Aqua jet Systems AB has announced the introduction of the Ergo Climber attachment for its new Ergo System hydrodemolition robot.

2.0 metres wide. Aquajet’s highpressure Power Pack provides the required water pressure and flow.

The Ergo System’s controller unit powers and controls the hydraulics.

It uses intelligent sensing to allow the operator to program the lance for optimal material removal. The Power Head oscillation is adjustable to 8 or 14 degrees. The lance angle is modifiable up to 45 degrees.

Aquajet Systems designed the Climber with spring-loaded, highfriction rollers that connect to a lightweight roller beam with just one bolt. Contractors attach the all-wheel drive system to scaffolding tube with two springloaded handles — one for the right and one for the left. The system offers a better grip and aids in the consistency of movement. Safety latches secure the handles in the locked position.

Systems AB has announced the introduction of the Ergo Climber attachment for its new Ergo System hydrodemolition robot. The Climber attaches to any standard scaffolding tubes and robotically moves along them to deliver powerful hydrodemolition forces for systematic vertical concrete or refractory removal, such as highrise construction, petrochemical facilities, and other industrial applications.

Hammer Time at Kinshofer Kinshofer and Hammer S.r.l. have signed a definite agreement to merge. Under the terms of the agreement Kinshofer has acquired a majority shareholding of Hammer.

Kinshofer is a leading manufacturer of attachments for excavators, skid steer loaders and truck-mounted cranes. The company has something of a reputation for growth by acquisition. Previous

acquisitions include Liftall Inc. (Canada), Demarec B.V. (Holland), RF System AB (Sweden), Auger Torque Group (U.K./ U.S.A./ Australia/ China), Solesbee´s LLC (U.S.A.) and the Doherty Group (New Zealand/ Australia).

Kinshofer reports that the acquisition of Hammer is significant in two ways; first it adds additional product segments, such as a full range of hydraulic breakers and other demolition tools to Kinshofer’s already very

comprehensive offering. And secondly, it improves Kinshofer’s distribution channel in markets Hammer is very strong.

Cat Hits Tilt Tilt rotators, it would appear, are the device du jour in many applications and just about every ma jor excavator manufacturer now offers such a device as an option. And Caterpillar is no exception.

With the addition of the new TRS23 Tiltrotator System (TRS), Caterpillar Work Tools provides a full portfolio of TRS configurations for Cat wheel and track excavators with operating weights from 23 to 30 metric tonnes. The TRS23, featuring a fully integrated control system that enhances carrier versatility and attachment control, rotates 360 degrees in either direction and tilts up to 40 degrees left and right, allowing the machine to reach more work areas from a single position and to manoeuver around obstacles.

The new TRS23 is available with pin-on and coupler interfaces for handling a range of grading and trenching buckets (with CW-, CWs-, or S-coupler tops and bottoms), and an available swivel can operate such work tools as compactors and grapples. An optional grapple module allows picking and placing

The Kinshofer Group has a new spot at Bauma. What’s new on the stand?

TF: Our engineers have developed such a wide array of new products across so may sectors, we decided not to show our whole range of attachment products as we did at Bauma 2016, instead focusing solely on showcasing innovations, redevelopments and new versions of attachments.

Q

Will choosing to show only innovations limit your overall product offer at Bauma?

TF: Quite the opposite - we have more than 3000 active products, way too many to talk about all of them. By focusing on the innovations made since the last Bauma, we’re showing how hard we, and our subsidiary companies, have worked to make the last few years such a success.

Q

Kinshofer makes such a big effort to attend Bauma. Is it worth the all the investment?

TF: Every three years Bauma gives you the opportunity to present the business to an international audience. It is not so much about making orders, more about developing new international partnerships. This year Kinshofer has so many new developments that we’ve completely concentrated on showing our innovative power.

We aim to demonstrate that concerning attachments, there is always room for fresh thinking.

Together with our customers we constantly work on new ideas and products and are very

proud to present the results at Bauma. Effectively, we’re a global ‘one-stop supplier’, offering a complete range of products for every part of the construction industry. From construction to landscaping, handling of materials and demolition, rail and utilities, to the recycling and waste industry – throughout worldwide markets.

Is there one highlight from the 128 innovations on display at Bauma that stands out for you?

Highly interesting are the Tiltrotators - we’re showing a completely new control system for NOX Tiltrotators at Bauma. Partial automation is a very important point which leads to significant benefits for our customers. We’ll also be showing two completely new sizes within the NOX range.

There will also be new HPX products with their proven benefits, for example, low maintainence and constant closing force. We step into new markets with two new HPX Demolition and Sorting Grabs for excavators betwen 27t and 37t operating weight.

Where are the new products designed and produced?

TF: Together with our 14 strong design development department, the ‘specials’ department and the production department at our Waakirchen HQ, all aquired subsidiaries and their employees are involved in the development and production of our attachments.

All together there are 34 design engineers within the Group who are constantly dedicated to innovations and redevelopments.

TF: When we acquire a company, we take great care to ensure that their products are not in conflict with products we already have.

Acquiring the product ranges from Hammer means we are now able to play in the highest league concerning Hydraulic Breakers.

Q

Fast growth brings risks as well as opportunities. How does Kinshofer integrate all the different company cultures into to the Group?

TF: Nothing is more important than quality. That rule also counts for acquisitions. We do not acquire businesses that are new to the market. Only companies and products which are proven, with a track record of delivering a first-class product, are suitable for consideration. Out of these companies we only choose highly profitable ones. We also have very high expectations on the management of these companies.

They have to be long standing, dedicated and differentiated through an impressive performance record. If these requirements are met, we do not change the company structure a great deal. An additional gain of any acquisition is the new distribution channels which open up, providing new opportunities to push other Kinshofer Group products. We sell products from newly acquired companies under their own brand name, as well as under the Kinshofer brand, providing a dual benefit. In general, you could say that an acquisition is not purely about growth but also about the way a new company complements the Group and our overall product offering.

Making an Impact There are many decisions we need to take in our work lives.

When it comes to dealing with maximising the feed materials such as demolition waste, the choice of crusher is key; different brands and most importantly impact or jaw crushers?

A few years ago it would have been a short conversation, jaw crushers accounted for roughly 90% of the market, it was the go to product.

“The range is so versatile in terms of working in any size of site and the product it can handle and the high tonnage that can be achieved wherever companies need. Sadly, Joe passed away suddenly in 1985 at the age of 51, leaving an extremely successful company which needed managing. His four children were thrust into the business and even though they lacked experience, they did not shy away from the challenge. They initially down-sized, recognising the need to make it more manageable and then they worked together to form O’Donovan Waste Disposal to continue their father’s legacy.

Denis Joseph O’Donovan arrived in London in the 1950s after moving from a rural village in West Cork.

Joe’s ambition and determination to succeed in business was paramount – like a lot of young men who had made the journey over from Ireland.

Having previously worked on the railways and construction sites, Joe used his experience and knowledge and decided to work for himself. In 1959 he bought a Caterpillar 951 tracked shovel and secured his first demolition job. He went on to purchase a tipper and eventually moved into skip lorries, establishing a waste depot in Kings Cross (which is now the site of the British Library) where his new business thrived and began to expand.

Nothing has changed in the intervening years, O’Donovan is still entirely family-owned and is run by the four O’Donovan siblings with Michael as the Chairman, Caroline and Anthony the Operations Directors and Jacqueline, as Managing Director, responsible for the overall direction of the business.

All of them are fiercely proud of the family-values and Irish heritage that have helped make O’Donovan a continued success.

Today, O’Donovan is widely regarded as an industry leader and innovator with their sustained investment in staff and operational excellence alongside their commitment to safety, being the powerful force behind the firm’s quality service and continued success.
