Five things to watch for in Cougars' first AAC game ANDREW VALDERAS

OVERTIME EDITOR

@THISISDREW2010

Both UH and UCF are coming off bye weeks and will face off in its first conference game of the season, with UH (2-2) boasting its most complete game during a 47-14 win over UNLV on Sept. 18, and UCF (1-2) coming off a 41-7 stomping over Bethune-Cookman on the same date. Here are five things to expect from the Cougars-Knights game Thursday night on ESPN. 1: UH has a havoc-reaking "Third Ward Defense":

The Cougars' defense looks stronger than ever, with dominant performances in three of four games this season. It is tied with Louisville for fifth in the nation with 13 total takeaways. It is tied for fourth in the nation with

eight interceptions, and includes tackling machines Efrem Oliphant and Derrick Mathews at linebacker. Both players are individually ranked high in total tackles. 2: Keep your eye on UH's Adrian McDonald:

No matter where he is on the field, the UH junior safety always seems to have a knack for finding the ball, whether its ripping the ball away from receivers and taking it the other way, or picking it off. McDonald has a team-high two interceptions to go along with his forced fumble and two recoveries. He will look to extend his forced-turnover streak to eight games, dating back to last season. 3: The faster, the better:

The Cougars are 7-0 after winning the first quarter with Travis Bush as the offensive

coordinator, compared to their 0-9 record when they don't. Numbers don't lie, and a good start could provide enough momentum to ride the Cougars to their first conference win of the season. 4: Will UH, Travis Bush stick to the run?:

Whenever the Cougars have stuck to the run, they are nearly unbeatable. In offensive coordinator Travis Bush's 16 games, dating back to the early 2012 season, the rushing attack has recorded better than 255 yards per game with an average six yards per carry — all resulting in his seven wins. When he doesn't stick to the run, Bush's rush attack has managed only 78 yards per game with a 3.1 yards per rush — all resulting in his nine losses. In the wins, the offense ran the ball an average of 42 times, comapred to the 25 in losses.

5: Which type of John O'Korn will we see?:

Will we see the O'Korn who threw four interceptions on the opening of TDECU Stadium against UTSA, or will we see the O'Korn who threw three touchdown scores at No. 25 BYU on Sept. 11, where he made throws that were NFL-like. If O'Korn plays mistake-free football, I expect the Cougars to run away with this game. The win against UNLV was close at halftime only because of O'Korn's two interceptions. But when he got his groove back in the third quarter, opening up with two touchdown passes, it became a blowout, complimented with a strong defense that constantly rushed the passer. It will be imperative to keep the reigning American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year's throwing attempts to a minimum. The Cougars are 7-2 when O'Korn has less than 40 attempts as a starter, but are 1-5 when he exceeds that number.

Junior receiver Deontay Greenberry was unable to haul in the game-winning 7-yard touchdown pass in last season's thrilling game at UCF, but he and the offense, after a bye, should be ready for the rematch Thursday night on ESPN at TDECU Stadium to start AAC play | Caitlin Hilton/The Cougar

Coogs not sleeping on Knights CHRISTOPHER SHELTON

CREATIVE DIRECTOR

@CHRISSHELTONTDC

Tony Levine chuckled at the thought of overlooking his team’s next opponent. Though Central Florida (1-2) is under .500, UH’s head coach said the Knights’ talent and coaching exceed their losing record. And after last season when UH (2-2) came seven yards shy of defeating conference champion UCF, Levine’s squad has a lot to prove. “Their record doesn’t indicate what kind of team they are and certainly what kind of program Coach (George) O’Leary has there. All you have to do is put on the video to see what kind of a team they have this season,"

Levine said. A confident UH squad will face UCF on Thursday at TDECU Stadium. In fact, junior receiver Deontay Greenberry expects the Cougars to win big. “We don’t really expect this game to be close, to be honest with you,” Greenberry said. “We want to really get after these guys from the jump and hit them in the mouth. He later added, "In my opinion, they weren’t that good (last season). They happened to overcome to come up with the W. So the only thing that sticks up in my head is that last play," he said referring to his team's inability to score the winning touchdown on 4th-and-goal. Bulletin board material aside, the game

has conference implications for two teams that had high expectations entering the season.

Both have also underachieved UCF dropped its first two games – a nail biter against Penn State in Dublin, Ireland, and a 38-10 loss to then-No. 20 Missouri on the road – before rebounding with a resounding 41-7 win against Bethune-Cookman, while UH has alternated wins and losses during its first four games. To earn their first American Athletic Conference victory of the season, the Cougars will need to improve their inconsistent offense. The No. 65 ranked scoring offense in the country has struggled to score when it

can’t run the football. In a 27-7 season-opening loss to UTSA, UH rushed for only 10 yards. Against BYU, UH didn’t attempt a single rush with its running backs in the second half. But in wins against UNLV and Grambling State, UH rushed for 674 yards and seven touchdowns. However, balance may not be the solution against the Knights. Though UCF ranks No. 24 in rushing defense, allowing only 102 yards per game, it struggles against the pass. The Knights defense is No. 60 against the pass, allowing 233 yards per game. And an even split is not what the Cougars strive for, Levine said. “Depending on our opponent or depending on what we have to do to win a game when we get into it, in our minds, balance could be 60/40 or 65/35 one way or the other,” Levine said. “It could be pass to run or run to pass.” With a stout run defense and a more manageable pass defense, the game could end up in the hands of sophomore quarterback John O’Korn and the Cougars’ ball-hawking Third Ward Defense – a thought that Levine said he’s comfortable with if the matchups present themselves.

Sharpening up the offensive tools A heavy dose of the passing game hasn’t led to wins since O’Korn took the reins of the Air Raid offense. The Cougars are 1-5 when O’Korn has more than 40 attempts, but are 7-2 when he has fewer than 40 attempts. Senior receiver Daniel Spencer, who leads the team with three total touchdowns, said he feels good about the progress on offense, but the Cougars are still working to smooth out the edges. “We look at the film every day and we see that we have spots that we can do better on – run routes a little bit better, throw in some better spots. It just takes time, practice and patience.” With the bright lights of a primetime matchup on ESPN, UH will have an opportunity to prove if Greenberry’s confidence was correct.

ville, which finished second in the AAC, moved to the Atlantic Coast Conference, and Cincinnati, which finsihed third, also lost its starting quarterback. The Cougars’ defense has played lights out and doesn’t need to depend on forced turnovers to win. It is ranked eighth in the country in yards given up per play (4.27), and its 335 yards allowed per game is the program’s fewest in more than a decade. It lost two starters at cornerback, but juniors William Jackson and Lee Hightower have looked impressive as first-year starters. The offense returned 94 percent of its offense — AAC leading receiver junior Deontay Greenberry and star sophomore quarterback John O’Korn, and are just out one starter at the skill position.

OVERTIME EDITOR

@THISISDREW2010

I

remember the first time I sat and watched a Houston Cougars football game. On Sept 29, 2009, Fox Sports televised UH's 45-35 upset over No. 5 Oklahoma State. The Cougars made clutch plays to complete the fourth-quarter comeback and were nationally ranked after defeating a big-time opponent. Cardiac Coogs! That team finished the season with four fourth-quarter comebacks. Clutch! But now, “Cardiac Coogs” and “Clutch” have not been used in recent years. Since 2012, UH is just 3-10 against teams that finished with a winning record, and 1-6 in games that were decided by one possession “We’ve made some mistakes in those big-time situations,” said senior receiver Daniel Spencer. “It just comes with patience and trying to be better the next week. We have to learn from our mistakes.” One of those six losses last season came against defending Fiesta Bowl champion Central Florida in a thriller. Since 2005, UCF has had UH's number, winning four of the five matchups — each of the Knights' victories decided by five points or less.

Another crack at it Thursday’s grudge match on ESPN — UH couldn’t complete last season's comeback after turning it over on downs from the Knights’ 7-yard line — will be an opportunity for UH to corral a win in its first American Athletic Conference game of the season. “It would be a big one for us,” said senior

With several players returned from last year's 8-5 season, UH and sophomore quarterback John O'Korn are more than enough equipped to make a serious run at a conference championship — and it starts Thursday night with a grudge match against Central Florida . | Justin Tijerina/The Cougar

offensive linemen Rowdy Harper. “We’re looking forward to it. It’ll be nice, with it being on ESPN, to bring it home.” Last season’s Cougars finished 8-5 and saw head coach Tony Levine in his second bowl game in three seasons. However, I feel a program that is now 5-10 on national television since 2010 warrants acknowledgment. So I asked Levine: Has it crossed your mind that it has been a while since the program has had a signature win in front of a large audience? “Not at all,” with him looking me straight in the eye, standing up straight with his arms crossed. There was a pause, then I asked again:

Against the worst

9-0

VS TEAMS THAT FINISHED BELOW .500 SINCE 2012

In any way? It never registered through your mind? “Not at all." That’s fair. What do you expect him to say? I probably would have said the same. UH will not face conference foe No. 22 East Carolina (3-1) on its schedule, and it should be favored in every game left on it except the regular season finale at Cincinnati (2-1) to make a run toward the conference championship.

Better now than never for UH UCF (1-2) isn’t ranked and has lost star players quarterback Blake Bortles and running back Storm Johnson to the NFL. That squad finished 12-1 in 2013. Louis-

But the Cougars are 2-2 They’re averaging just 386 yards per game (85th nationally), the lowest since 2004. The offense thus far has shown positive signs sparingly but still struggle on 3rd down — converting just 33 percent (110th nationally). Very un-Cougar-like, wouldn’t you say, Spencer? “We have spots that we could do better in, and we see it from watching the film,” he said. Let’s take a look Game 1: the offense landed on its face vs. UTSA; Game 2: hard to measure against an overwhelmed Grambling State; Game 3: showed sparks at BYU, but only in the second quarter; Game 4: played arguably its best in the second half vs. UNLV. My next question to Spencer: Do you feel most haven’t seen this offense’s full poten— “We haven’t, we haven’t,” he quickly said before I could finish saying "potential." Well, let's see it.

CENTRAL FLORDIA FUTURE @ RGILLESPIECFF

Editor's note: This article previously appeared in the University of Central Florida's student newspaper, The Central Florida Future. Through two games of the regular season, Terrance Plummer didn't like what he saw from his defense. While some adjustments were made, the biggest change for Plummer had to happen from within. In his head, he knew he had to flip the switch. "I tried to put it all on my shoulders," Plummer said. "I'm the senior. I'm the Mike linebacker. I'm the guy that everybody looks to, and I have to take that responsibility, and the first two weeks I don't know if I did a good enough job." At first glance, he might be right. Penn State had more than 450 yards passing against his unit, and Missouri was able to run through and around UCF tacklers en route to 38 points. But on Saturday, Plummer was active early on from his middle linebacker position. A pass rush that was stuck in neutral through two games was flipped into overdrive as three linebackers — Plummer, Troy Gray and Chequan Burkett — turned up the heat, each notching sacks. A defense that

struggled against the pass in its first game and the run in its second was stout in both aspects — albeit against an inferior opponent. And these trends were spotted early in both of UCF's previous games. Plummer wasn't going to let that happen again. "We wanted to make a statement and go out there and set the tone early," Plummer said. Penn State ran 10 plays on its opening possession and scored a touchdown. It only took Missouri seven plays to have the same result. However, on Saturday, the UCF defense hit on all cylinders to start the contest, and was off the field in four plays. "It's always good to get a fast start," cornerback Jordan Ozerities said. "We were able to pin them deep a couple times. We got them in long first and second downs." In its next game, the American Athletic Conference opener, UCF faces Houston, a team that has scored 23 first-quarter points through four games. The Cougars were billed to have a potent offense, but to this point they have struggled to find rhythm. Sophomore quarterback John O'Korn is already more than halfway (6) to his interception total from last season (10). Like Plummer, they will be looking to flip the switch.

Running back Kenneth Farrow and the rest of the Cougars are ready for challenge against the Knights in Thursday's primetime showdown, a rematch from last season's thriller that had conference title implications.
