Cougars in Recovery walk the walk JULIE NGUYEN
GRAD GUIDE EDITOR @JULIETYPES
Graduating seniors have faced all sorts of challenges on their journey toward a bachelor's degree, and for those Cougars in Recovery, the alcohol and substance abuse recovery community at UH, their path is no easier. “Before I started seeking help about my addiction problem, I had to drop out of college before to go into rehab,” said sociology senior and CIR member Joel Trawick. “And so once I got that squared away and got back into school, it just gave me a founda-

tion to go from.” Cougars in Recovery is in its second year of operation, and is focused on creating a community where students recovering from alcohol or substance addiction can meet others going through the same recovery as they traverse the path to sobriety. Members of CIR meet up twice a week, and Trawick was introduced to a wealth of friends that understood what he was going through and could support him. “We’ll go there to stop by and study and it’s always cool to know there’s somebody there going through what I’m going through who’s on campus trying to do the

right thing,” Trawick said. In addition to mandatory meetings, there is also sober housing dedicated to keeping alcohol out of the hands of CIR members. Alcohol and substance addiction affect a variety of people, and not always those who were in previously destitute conditions. "I’ve always been smart. I’ve always been capable, and after I started addressing my problems, (CIR) was like a chance to actually get things done,” Trawick said. “From there, it just let me do what I was capable of doing.” Alcoholism and substance addiction is a seldom-addressed issue, but there are people at UH who are willing to help. “Nobody talks about this kind of stuff. When you meet a new person, you don’t tell them, ‘Hey, I have a problem with drugs and alcohol,’" Trawick said. “But there are people who do so, and Cougars in Recovery allowed me to meet those people, help support them and let them help support me.” A senior recognition breakfast will be held from 8 to 9 a.m. Tuesday in the UC Ballroom for students who have been working towards an alcohol and substance-free lifestyle while trying to stay on top of their college career. “So it’s been a whole new college experience," Trawick said. "I’m so grateful they started it. I really am.”

Editors say farewell: Seniors reflect on their time at The Cougar I am counting down the days until December 19. As I'm writing this, there are only 11 days left until I graduate and become a UH alum. The past four years have not been easy, but I honestly would not trade them for anything in the world. Arriving PAULINA ROJAS here for transfer student orientation in 2011 was LIFE & ARTS EDITOR a shock and blur. But there was something I was absolutely sure of: I wanted to major in journalism. During my first week of classes, I walked into the offices of The Daily Cougar and left with a job. During my time as a student I moved out and learned how to live on my own, I experienced sleepless nights, heartbreak and loss, but I spent time doing what I love every single day. I have met people who now are some of my best friends. As I prepare to enter the next phase of my life, I take with me not only the knowledge that I obtained but also all those experiences that led to me finding myself.
Graduates can utilize University Career Services up to a semester after graduation. After that point, they must subscribe to keep accessing it. | File Photo/ The Cougar
UCS provides post-grad help
After graduation, UH can still help you nail down your dream job JULIE NGUYEN
GRAD GUIDE EDITOR @JULIETYPES
For those who are haven't been successful in the job hunt, UH University Career Services can help, even after graduation. As recent UH graduates, students are allowed to utilize University Career Services for a semester after they graduate. The free semester subscription provides access to a career counselor, alumni career fairs, career development opportunities, an online job database, the UCS career resource library, on-campus recruitment for alumni and more. Career counselors can help alumni learn how to work and market themselves at career fairs, plan and conduct effective job
searches and evaluate and negotiate salary and job offers. The UCS resource library offers more than 200 books and directories that range from job descriptions to average salaries, and resources, excluding directories, can be checked out for up to a week. Graduates can also consult UCS for a resume or curriculum vitae critique service, mock interviews, cover letter and personal statement assistance and the CareerShift online job search tool, which grants access to the employee directory of most companies and their contact information. The Myer-Briggs and Strong Interest Inventory tests that help reflect on personal strengths and career interests are also administered at UCS, and the Coog Careers alumni newsletter is still available to Fall graduates until May 1. For those graduating in the spring, free access ends Sept. 1 of that year. Those graduating in the summer can access UCS until Dec. 15 of that year.
Cougar Pathway is a web-based job posting and retrieval service targeted specifically at UH alumni. There are options to search for specific positions or to browse through all available positions posted. Appointments with career counselors can also be made through Cougar Pathway. Jobs are posted for 30 days or until the job is filled, and employment roles range from entry-level to management and executive. Recent alumni, according to the UCS website, are usually regarded by many employers as entry-level candidates. There are over 1,000 jobs available on Cougar Pathway for recent graduates and alumni and only about 200 taking advantage of it, according to career counselor Andrew Tessmer. If the free subscription deadline passes, students have the option to purchase a sixmonth subscription for $50 to continue accessing the same services.
I have to say that the last four years of my life have been, without a doubt, the most fun and exciting. I will truly miss it. Not just because it is the greatest university in the nation, but the friendships and experiences I have gone through to make it all worthwhile. I continue to say to people that me transferANDREW ring to the University of VALDERAS OVERTIME Houston has been the EDITOR best, and most important, decision I have made thus far. I was fortunate enough to build friendships with several people, those who I will continue to keep in touch with for the rest of my life. I was especially fortunate that several of those friendships were built with my coworkers at The Cougar, where I started working as a staff writer, then assistant sports editor before becoming the Overtime editor. The University of Houston is not only one of the more beautiful campuses, but the constant activities put on made it that much better. One of my favorite memories at this university was when B.o.B, one of my favorite hip hop artists performed in last March’s Frontier Fiesta.

After serving as managing editor, Natalie completed NYU's Summer Publishing Institute. Her work has been published in The Houston Press, The Houston Chronicle and Houstonia, where she's working as an editor of District Magazine. She co-founded 'It's Not Hou It's Me,' a blog that covers Houston's dining and entertainment.
The former editor-in-chief of The Daily Cougar, Channler moved to St. Cloud, Minn. immediately after graduation for her summer fellowship at The St. Cloud Times through the Chipps Quinn Scholars program. She's now living in Washington, D.C., interning with the National Press Foundation.
David was one of the longest serving copy chiefs that The Daily Cougar has had, so it only makes sense that David would be working for The Houston Chronicle's copy desk. His shade-throwing tactics and obscure anime references are still missed in our newsroom, but we're sure he's bringing his signature sass to the Chronicle's newsroom.
Jessica wore many hats at The Daily Cougar, serving as interim Opinion editor and assistant news editor. Having worked for Student Video Network, her dream was to establish herself in broadcast journalism. She's off to a good start: Jessica is currently working as a reporter for KFDM and FOX 4 in Beaumont, reporting in the field and the newsroom.
Monica worked as assistant Life and Arts editor and eventually served as the section's editor last spring. She'll graduate this month, and after interning at Memorial Hermann in their marketing department, Monica has accepted a full-time position within the communications department.

Alternatives to full-time employment Working at a company straight out of college doesn't suit everyone
JULIE NGUYEN
GRAD GUIDE EDITOR @JULIETYPES
Working a full-time corporate job isn’t the dream for everyone once they leave college, and understandably so. With the multitude of options and alternative career paths a graduate can take, it's no wonder that students opt out of the traditional route of employment and go for a variety of alternatives that can be personally fulfilling. From traveling abroad to volunteering in the United States or internationally, the options are almost limitless for the recent graduate with oats to sow. Here are some of those alternatives to consider before jumping into a corporate job:
Fellowships and research assistants If academics and research are your strong suit or there is an academic project you want to pursue, consider applying for a fellowship or research assistant position. A well-known fellowship is the U.S. government-sponsored Fulbright Program. They have offered grants for more than 1,500 U.S. graduating college seniors, graduate students, young professionals and artists to study, conduct research or teach English abroad. The process of obtaining funding is different for each fellowship, but for those who are dedicated to a particular subject, this is a good chance to dive into it without having to worry about finances too much. Universities are another source of fellowships and research opportunities, and they offer the chance to immerse oneself in a chosen field of study. Research is not exclusive to just the natural sciences; other fields include psychology, English and international relations. Some sleuthing is required in order to find a fellowship or research position that best fits your interests. Georgetown University is a good starting point, since its website has a comprehensive list of fellowships that don’t require a nomination and research opportunities. UH also has fellowships and research opportunities, but a specific department must be contacted to find out more.
It's nothing to be taken lightly, but the military offers competitive advantages and benefits for its members, both during enlistement and after they have completed their active enlistment. | File photo/The Cougar
Join the military The military gives people the chance to serve their country and not always as a foot solider or someone in the line of war. For people with a college degree, you can start off in the higher ranks and serve as computer analysts or work in marketing. Working in the military does provide a lot of benefits, but it is not a decision to be taken lightly.
Start your own business It’s no easy matter, but if you’re entrepreneurial enough and sick of not finding a job that fits your schedule, why not start a business for it? With the advent of social media and personalized online stores like Etsy and Storenvy, starting your own business and reaching a global audience has never been easier.
Continuing your education Whether it’s brushing up on current skills or learning about a field different from what you majored in, continue your education through a variety of free online college-level courses or enroll in continuing education for professional development.
As evidenced by last year's VegFest, there's a growing audience for alternative diets. Organic farming would help you cater to a small but growing population. | File photo/The Cougar
Volunteering There are hundreds of volunteer opportunities available and are not limited to volunteering with a major organization. A part-time opportunity could present itself at a hospital, library, animal shelter or community center. For those interested in volunteering full-time, there is the AmeriCorps, who employ more than 75,000 people each year at schools, nonprofits, public agencies and community and faith-based groups across the
country. Most AmeriCorps volunteers receive student loan deferment, training and a living allowance or monthly stipend allowance and health insurance. After completing your term of service, you will also receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award to help pay for college, graduate school, vocational training or student loans. A branch of AmeriCorps, City Year, focuses on educating and assisting in high-risk public schools and areas.

Become a nanny
Traveling is expensive, but the memories and life experiences you gain are priceless. If you are able to afford it, it's something to consider, as many people don't travel again until retirement. | Jenae Sitzes/The Cougar
Travel Some graduates decide to travel after college before they settle down or commit to a full-time job. There are options for traveling within the United States or beyond U.S. borders as long as you have some money in savings that you aren't afraid to part ways with. For those on a budget, hostels, tour guide programs and public transportation are your best friends. EF College Break and Kayak are websites geared toward students with little to spend. It's been said that the best time to travel is now, and maybe the best way to find out if that's true is to embark on a mission of your own.
Go further with your passion Starting small doesn’t mean you’re going to end up somewhere small. If you’re passionate about something, whether it’s rock climbing or playing video games, turn it into a job. If rock climbing is your passion, become certified to teach rock climbing; if you’re a gamer, look and see if there are positions for beta testing available or if you can do coding or marketing for a game.
Teaching English or volunteering abroad Since English has become the dominant international language, countries look for people interested in teaching English as a second language. There are programs through international embassies, like Japan’s JET program and France’s teaching assistant program, or through international schools and service organizations, like Korea’s EPIK program. For those who want to volunteer abroad, there is the Peace Corps, if one is willing to spend two years in service and currently in good health. Benefits include a housing and living stipend during the term of service, comprehensive medical and dental insurance, student loan deferment, training and paid vacation time.
A nanny is an unconventional career choice, but if you enjoy being around kids there are some rather glamorous benefits to it. Nannies are privy to benefits including traveling around Europe, living in cities like Las Vegas or New York City, having health insurance, receiving paid vacation and use of a car off-duty. But despite common perceptions, being a nanny is not an easy job. Caring for infants often requires documented infant care experience, and coursework or a degree in early childhood education or elementary education is a significant hiring factor. The English Nanny and Governess School offers a certificate program for those who want to pursue this career path. As for locating jobs, there are agencies that exclusively deal with recruiting and employing nannies. The International Nanny Association is a good starting point to learn more information.
Try organic farming
Being a freelance writer means you are able to choose the projects you want to work on without having to dedicate yourself to a company. | File photo/The Cougar
Freelance Freelancing is associated with writing and photographing for publications, but there are other fields that employ freelancers. Other industries include web development, art and design, branding and marketing and information technology. The great thing is, you have the unique ability to work at your own pace and do projects that interest you. Freelancing is flexible and gives writers the opportunity to work for all kinds of people and industries. Sometimes a project you work on while freelancing can inspire you to do it as a full-time job. For those afraid to start freelancing on their own, the Freelancers
Union is a good place to find motivation and support from other freelancers. Most publications around Houston hire writers, editors or photographers on a freelance basis, where you can expect anywhere from $50 to a couple hundred dollars per project. It's a great way to get your foot in the door of a publication you're interested in, and it'll also help you to develop a diverse portfolio of you work. At some publications as a freelancer, you'll be expected to cover just about anything on a moment's notice if you want to make money, so it's also a great way to develop your reporting skills and impress the boss with your quick turnaround time on projects.
The World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms program is a program that helps individuals connect with and work on organic farms throughout the world. For a small fee, participants are able to access an extensive database of opportunities in the country of their choice. The duration of the experience depends on where and when a person works, since the details of the agreement are between the farmer and the volunteer, but most situations encompass a few months and include room and board.
Become an adventure guide Maybe you’re the type to try anything and everything at least once and aren’t afraid to say yes to white-water rafting or bungee jumping. Many adventure companies are looking for energetic and outgoing people to hire both within the United States and internationally, as activities such as mountain climbing, elephant riding and camping are popular among tourists, many of whom speak English.

Graduate school does not fit every graduate JULIE NGUYEN, CARA SMITH
GRAD GUIDE EDITOR, EDITOR IN CHIEF @JULIETYPES
Graduate school requires a significant commitment of time and money. Before diving into post-baccalaureate education, take time to clarify your career goals and ensure that it is the best stepping stone in your career. Things to consider in developing your career goals include working conditions, employment outlook, earning potential and field — or industry — specific requirements. It's also prudent to look into the demands of the graduate programs that interest you as it will help you find a good match based on your skills, interests, goals and needs. Graduates usually pursue academics, focusing on original research, or a more traditional profession, focusing on application of particular knowledge and skills. Master’s degrees typically take from one to three years to complete, and a Ph.D will usually take an additional four to seven years to complete. Evaluate your short-term and long-
Be you. Belong.
term career goals, and make sure that your career would benefit from a master's degree. Some career paths, like K-12 education receive negligible benefits from graduate school. But if you're going into business, you'll definitely want to consider a master's in business administration. Young communications majors might benefit from graduate school, but sometimes getting a few years of work under your belt is just as useful as continuing your education. If you've already been hired but you're considering graduate school, talk to your boss. Some companies have programs that allow you to receive a completely financed master's degree, as long as you work for the company for a predetermined amount of time after receiving your degree. It can be tough to balance graduate school and personal obligations, like raising a family or sowing any wild oats you may have. If you're going to enroll in graduate school, make sure you want it, because it's going to demand a lot of sacrifice from other areas of your life.
If you have concerns about whether you should pursue post-grad education, talk to your adviser and express your personal and professional goals. They're equipped to help you make the big decision. | File photo/The Cougar
If you’re uncertain about your career goals or direction, you're afraid that you won’t be able to get a job or you want to get rich quick, it might be best to steer clear of graduate school. By no means does a master's degree guarantee getting rich quick, and failure
to find a job might just mean that you're setting your goals too high. If you can, start out at a smaller company and work your way up to the big leagues if that's where you want to be. No degree will make up for good old fashioned hard work and effort.
