A personal narrative on what not to do during finals i SEAN ALDER

ABOUT THE COUGAR
CREATIVE DIRECTOR @SEAN_W_ALDER
I have a problem in December and May where I understand the importance of those last three papers and four tests, but I just want to play video games with my friends. Even if you don't play video games as much as I do, you still have something that will always be a more attractive use of your time whether it's Netflix, shopping or just chilling. The typical day during finals week for me consists of the same four or five elements, depending on how outgoing my friends are. I will plan to wake up early, turn off the alarm and accidentally fall back asleep until the early afternoon. After eating a sandwich for breakfast in the hopes of tricking my body into thinking I just ate lunch, I proceed with my shortened day. I gather all of my study and essay-writing material at my desk — which is placed entirely too close to the bed that is still calling my name — and I start brainstorming. Even though I may have previously worked on whatever task is at hand, I always feel like I need to brainstorm for a good hour. And by brainstorm, I mean get distracted by everything at my disposal. Once I have finally gotten on

Turning my phone over, I will see one of two things: the invitation to hang out with a friend, or a question: “League, anyone?” Side note to all of you looking for something to play with your friends: don’t play League of Legends. It’s too late for me, but you can still be saved. Three hours later, I have had my fill of socializing and have made the mature decision to get

back to work. Every instance of writing an essay or studying for a test brings the same “that’s a good place to take a break” point. Mostly, I will feel this way after writing a couple of pages without looking away or studying a handful of chapters in the same manner. But, now I’m hungry. And even if I’m not, the clock says it’s almost time for dinner, so I begin to think of which starch-based product to prepare
from the comfort of my apartment. After feeling fancy and taking spaghetti over mac and cheese, I find myself at the lowest point of my evening: when I realize it’s going to be another late night. I have now either finished my work or given up on checking all of the boxes on my to-do list. If I have resorted to the latter, things will hopefully begin again not-so-bright-and-early the next day. Don’t be like me.

Finals on the gridiron: football players share their experiences EFREN DIOSDADO
ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITOR @EFRECORP
Senior safety Adrian McDonald said that professors don't give him special treatment. | File photo/ The Cougar
After their biggest game of the season, the Cougar football players have has to switch from winning a championship to going through the struggle of finals week. “The worse of part finals week (would) probably be (last) week because I haven’t started on a book report that needs to be done,” senior safety Adrian McDonald said. “I might need to get that going.” McDonald said his professors don’t give him any special treatment. “No extended deadlines, no excuses,” McDonald said. “I just got to get it done.” McDonald said he’s balancing football and finals by sleeping later and spending time after practice to study. Senior inside linebacker Elandon Roberts said his worse experience has maintained football and finals at the same time. “Sometimes you’ll be on the last game (of the season) and tired, and now you got to get ready for finals,” Roberts said. “It can be real hectic (with) the timing.”
Roberts said it’s been stressful this season, especially ahead of the American Athletic Conference championship game. “It’s kind of a strain because (it was) real big game, but at the same time you got to know when to study, when to put the studying down and get on your football studying,” Roberts said. “It correlates kind of hard, it gets difficult.” For senior offensive lineman Alex Cooper, thinking of finals brought back memories of a horrific finals experience. “During sophomore year, I was in two online classes, and for one of the classes, we didn’t have a final,” Cooper said. “For some reason, I got the two classes confused, and I didn’t realize we had the final until three hours before it was due." Cooper said that one of his teammates happened to be in the same class and asked if he had studied for the final. "I panicked," Cooper said. "I panicked and looked over some stuff. I managed to kind of squeak out a C, but I was going crazy for about an hour and half that day.”

Eating sweets isn't the best finals option SARAH KIM
ASSISTANT OPINION EDITOR
My grandmother once told me that vegetables that look like organs actually help the body part they resemble. For example, walnuts look like brains so they help boost your brainpower while tomatoes help the heart because they resemble the chambers of a heart when cut open. While I love Grandma, and I’m fairly certain this is not at all supported by fact, there are plenty of foods that help boost your energy and brain. Their effects are supported by research, and many of these healthy options help in more than one area. “Omega-3 fatty acids — found in salmon, walnuts and kiwi fruit — provide many benefits, including improving learning and memory and helping to fight against such mental disorders as depression and mood disorders, schizophrenia, and dementia,” said Gmez-Pinilla, a member of UCLA's Brain Research Institute and Brain Injury Research Center. Oily fish like salmon, trout, mackerel, herring, sardines, pilchards and kippers, can help provide the Omega-3 fatty acids and can be prepared however you like. If you like flavorful international food that contains turmeric, like curry, you can
also help improve your brain. One German study found that “a compound found in turmeric could encourage the growth of nerve cells thought to be part of the brain's repair kit.” Research also suggests a compound found in turmeric could encourage the growth of nerve cells. “Previous studies suggest the other compound, cumin, could reduce inflammation in the body and have anti-cancer benefits." Seeds and nuts also help your brain stay active as good sources of “protein, minerals, vitamin E, omega-6 fatty acids and some essential amino acids.” It’s also important to be able to keep going throughout the day. According to the BBC, “The ability to concentrate and focus comes from the adequate, steady supply of energy — in the form of glucose in our blood to the brain. Achieve this by choosing whole grains with a low-GI, which release glucose slowly into the bloodstream, keeping you mentally alert throughout the day.” Whole grain alternatives are available at every grocery store and most restaurants. They will help you keep up your energy. Eating breakfast is also proven to help keep you going throughout the day. According
Foods with Omega-3 fatty acids help with memory and fighting mood disorders.| Courtesy of Wikimedia Commons
to The Science of Nutrition, “Breakfast consumption reduces the physical symptoms of stomach pain, headache, muscle tension, and fatigue, all of which interfere with learning.” Most people know healthy eating can help performance, but its human nature to want
what we should not, like chocolate, wine, cupcakes, and donuts. The best vehicle for a healthy dose of energy is “definitely not a chocolate…because fat stalls the energizing effects of glucose," said psychologists Paul Gold and Donna Korol from
Binghamton University and Carol Manning from the University of Virginia. Choosing healthy options and avoiding junk food can help students’ memories and perhaps score higher on their finals. So don't forget to put away that candy bar.

Where to study? A guide to on and off campus spots ANTHONY TORRES
OPINION EDITOR @IBEANTRYAN
When it comes to studying, we all need our little space to spark the creative juices. A lot of people might simply set up shop in the library or The Nook, but sometimes these places can get too crowded. Or maybe you just hate how loud that one group two tables down is and it's really stressing you out. Here are a few ideas for those who want someplace different to study.
On Campus Other than the obvious areas like coffee shops or the library, there's a few little study areas not everyone knows about. 1. There's actually a few areas near the Student Center that are perfect for studying. In the lobby and second floor of the SC North are a lot of couches, tables and chairs ideal for study groups. The building also stays open pretty late, so you don't have to worry about being kicked out any time soon. 2. There's a small area right in between the architecture and engineering buildings that not a lot of people know about. There's a small bench there facing a small reflecting pool which is perfect for those wanting a more zen area with few people walking around. 3. In the Roy G. Cullen building, there's actually two
study rooms that serve as small quiet areas. Normally there are a few people in there, but if you manage to find a spot it can be a great place to focus.
Off Campus
4. Parks can be great places to study especially with the weather being the way it is now. In the museum district is Hermann Park, arguably one of Houston's most gorgeous areas. The McGovern Centennial Gardens recently opened and it has plenty of benches and picnic style tables one could easily set up shop at for a few hours. 5. Houston has dozens of coffee shops and tea houses that are open late and great to just pull out your laptop and read what you need to read. Go over to Rice Village and pick one of the many places they have or swing over to Agora off of Westheimer and find a cozy spot to enjoy tea and study. The Montrose area has a lot of great coffee shops almost on every corner. If you're looking for a place with options for food, The Black Labrador is a small pub off of Montrose Boulevard that has a nice sitting area outside. But the best place is wherever you feel most comfortable. Finding your perfect study spot is part of the college experience. Houston has many great spots to choose from, so finding the right spot shouldn't be too hard.

Studying too hard? Remember to take a break REBECCA HENNES
NEWS EDITOR @BECCAGHENNES
The end of the fall semester can only mean one thing for students: finals. While most students will be busy cramming for exams and scrambling to finish final projects, some forget the toll it takes on mental health. During this stressful time, it’s critical to maintain a healthy lifestyle physically and mentally. Here are some tips to stay sane and unwind before finals.
Have some fun Go out to lunch, go out for drinks if you are of age, or just stay home and watch Netflix in your pajamas all day. No matter what it is, giving yourself a day off will help lower your stress levels. The next day you will come back to your work refreshed and less stressed.
Take a break
Listen to music
Whether you’re cramming an entire semester into a few days, or casually reviewing for exams, take breaks in between study sessions to give your brain a break. Go for a walk, eat a snack, or get coffee with friends. The break will reset your mind and help you come back to your work feeling refreshed and focused.
Listening to calm music can help elevate your serotonin levels and alleviate stress. Take a break from the background noise in the library, and zone out with some classical music.
Find a study group

Working in groups can be a great way to lighten the work load. Get together with friends or classmates, and split up the work, so that you are not overburdened with material. Working in a group will allow for discussion of the
Sleep One of the worst things you can do is deprive yourself of sleep. Make sure you are getting at least eight hours of sleep each night that you study. Sleep is critical, and too many students risk their health by not getting enough, especially during finals week. Take a 20 minute cat nap in between study sessions to get your concentration back.

Battling finals mania? There's a playlist for that This next week is going to be tough. You are going to lose some sleep and cry, but most of all, you will study. Here’s some music to help you make it through that 48-hour push to study for that last final.
— Bryce Dodds
St. Vincent – "Cruel": So, I can’t be 100 percent sure, but this is probably what’s going through the mind of every professor when they’re writing their finals.
Washed Out – "Don’t Give Up": You may feel like 12 hours of Netflix is more productive than 12 hours of studying, but just power through, and don’t give up.
A Great Big Pile of Leaves – "Snack Attack": This is a pretty good recommendation of how to break up the monotony of burying your nose in the books. Kick back, grab a Snickers, and nom your way to an A.
Toro y Moi – "Cola": I don’t even have anything funny to say about this one, it’s just a really good song.
Jimi Hendrix – "The Wind Cries Mary": While the wind may cry Mary, you may be crying mercy. Take heart, the end is near.
Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell – "Ain’t No Mountain High Enough": Sure, you may have left a lot of work until the end of the semester, but Marvin Gaye is behind you, and he believes in you.
Weezer – "El Scorcho": Because the end of the year has us all feeling a little angsty.
Jackson 5 – "I Want You Back": An ode for all those missed classes you just wish you could get back. Don’t worry, you’ll be better next semester.
OK Go – "Needing/Getting": You might be hoping for an A in that class you stopped showing up to halfway through the year, but, as the band says, “Needing is one thing, but getting’s another.”
Bahamas – "All the Time": This one’s for walking out of that last final, head held high. Come hell or retaking a course, you’re done for about a month. And now, you’ve got all the time in the world.
