Letter From The Editor It’s that time of the year again, the time where you get to decide what we write about! Is this your first time reading our Coogs Choose issue? Allow me to explain. This entire issue is based off of a giant survey that was given out to students all across campus. In this survey, they were able to vote for all of the things that they think make our school and Houston so great. Thank you to everyone who voted — it’s because of you that this issue was even possible! If you weren’t able to vote in the survey, and you’re new to Houston, this issue will be a really great resource for you when it comes to finding out where to eat at, spend time with friends at or even get involved on campus at. On a personal note, I know that the first issue of Coogs Choose that I was a part of taught me so much more about my city and all that it has to offer.

content daily about a wide range of topics relevant to students. If you find yourself constantly picking up these issues whenever they come out, maybe it’s time to consider joining our family! If you want to get involved next semester, you can apply starting now on AccessUH under Get Involved. Thanks for picking up this issue! This past year with Cooglife has been a whirlwind, but I’ve learned so much and got to experience so many new things. I hope you all enjoy your summer, whether you’ll be spending it trying to get ahead for next year or just by taking some much needed time off.

But don’t let this issue limit you in your pursuit for the best bowl of ramen, best slice of pizza or the best karaoke bar that has all of your favorite songs and makes you feel comfortable enough to embarrass yourself in public. There is so much to be discovered in this city, so don’t think that this is where your journey ends. Go out there and find out what’s really the best that Houston has to offer, and bring that knowledge back to UH next year when you cast your vote again. As this school year comes to a close, so does the production of our print issue. This is the last one of the semester! best record store Vinyl records are back and so are the cozy stores that sell them like Cactus Music. A landmark in the Houston music community for many years running now, Cactus Music is a one-stop shop for records, meet-n-greets and in-store performances by local and national talent. Beyond the brick and mortar walls, Cactus Music can also be seen at various pop-up events around town and is often giving away free tickets to local shows. — M.H

a beginner's guide to shopping at Cactus Music By Tyler Scott

Music is constantly changing, especially the way we listen to it and where we buy it. With the technological age, downloads and music streaming sites such as Spotify have reigned supreme for some time now. But there are those, myself included, that believe that going to a music store, browsing the shelves and finding that perfect CD or vinyl is a treasured experience you can’t get from just browsing the web. We asked, and your pick for the best record store in Houston is Cactus Music. A personal favorite of mine too, I’ll go through its best attributes, what it has to offer and what newcomers can expect their first time visiting this city staple. If you’re new to purchasing music in general, you’re probably wondering where to start. An employee at the shop recommends starting with a format you’re more comfortable with. “We’ve got 45s, we’ve got 12 inches (and) we have dollar records so it’s about how deep (you’re) interested in getting into it,” he said. An easy place to start when shopping around for music is CDs. Cactus has a large collection of CDs. Whether you dig the oldies, jazz, modern, alternative or even classical, Cactus has you covered. Sure, CD players are hard to come by these days, but if your car has a CD player in it, buy some CDs you can listen to during your next long commute. The most popular physical format nowadays is the vinyl. I’m sure a lot of you are probably turned off by them because let’s face it, a lot of people who avidly listen to and collect vinyls tend to scare off Photo by Tyler Scott

speakers, you can find a section in the back of the store that offers brands such as Audio Technica. Once you’ve got something to listen to your vinyls on, you’re ready for some browsing. Same with the CDs, you’ll be discovering material from the ‘40s all the way up till now. It’s also important to note the records are split between a new and used section, so don’t get upset if you can’t immediately find what you’re looking for. Even if it seems daunting to shuffle through those huge piles, a lot of the fun is through browsing alone. Plus, you never know, you might come across something you never thought of listening to before. The main products are CDs and vinyl, but there are lots of other options to experiment with if you feel the need to. They have cassette tapes, hilariously labeled “back by somewhat popular demand,” 45s, which are basically smaller records with one song on each side (ask about an adapter before buying) and miscellaneous merchandise such as t-shirts, box sets, posters, pins, books and collectibles.

newcomers. But don’t let this deter you, and don’t be afraid to come to Cactus Music, even if you’re just starting out. If you’re searching for a place to buy a record player too, Cactus has got you covered. Whether you need the whole set, just a turntable or just some

But Cactus is more just a place to shop for music; it’s also a place where you can experience very intimate live performances. At these performances, you can also get signings from the performers and enjoy free beverages courtesy of St. Arnold, according to a Cactus Music employee. If you’ve ever been on the fence about going out and buying music or just unsure about where to begin, Cactus Music is the perfect place to get started. With a wide variety of music selection, friendly staff and live performances, there’s a reason they were chosen as the best record store.

Sex Toy Shopping at adam and Eve

By Diamond Braxton

Since Adam and Eve was voted as the as the “Best Sex Shop” by the students, I decided to take a trip to the Montrose location in search of a new vibrator. Upon entering the building, I was greeted by extremely cute lingerie and a friendly staff that was ready to help me with my sex needs. Kelly, a current worker at the Montrose location, introduced me to the world of vibrators that she believed to be the best. She recommended the Sensuelle brand, which has vibrators that come in many different shapes and sizes for your needs. “I like these because they’re quiet, so no one would be able to hear you use them,” Kelly said. She then opened up a box of the Sensuelle Joie, a very tiny external vibrator that’s known for being discreet, petite and powerful. The vibrator was about as big as my pinkie finger, and it came with several different tempo speeds.

However, if you wanted a vibrator that could be used externally and internally, Kelly suggested the Sensuelle Bentlii vibrator, which comes with double motors and is also waterproof. “Although it says submergible, don’t use these in the bathtub because they’ll stop working. They are safe for shower use though.” Kelly said. The Sensuelle brand offers a wide array of vibrators of various sizes, multiple functions and feel-good tempo speeds. If you live in a dorm and you want to buy a vibrator without your friends knowing, then trust this product. Adam and Eve surpassed my expectations with its convenient locations, extremely knowledgeable staff and its substantial amount of products. This is the store to come to if you’re new to toys because the staff will take you through everything step-by-step to make sure you leave with a product you’ll love. Photo by Diamond Braxton
