According to a 2008 report from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 27.5 percent of men and 34 percent of women age 20-39 are obese. A 2011 report by the American Diabetes Association said that 11.3 percent of adults ages 20 or older suffer from Type 2 diabetes. “Most young people aren’t interested in fitness and nutrition,” Building Supervisor and personal trainer for the UH Recreation and Wellness Center Kenneth Tillis said. “Many students don’t know how much to exercise or what they should be eating.” Two-thirds of Texans are overweight or obese, and America is the nearly fattest country in the world. Obesity is second cause of preventable death in the United States, contributing to about 400,000 deaths per year. And while students should better inform themselves about health risks and overall physical fitness, many students may feel that few nutritious food options are available on campus. “A lot of (students) say they struggle in finding things healthy at all the restaurants around here,” Hollingsworth said. “That is especially true of the restaurants on campus that I’ve been accessing lately.” Also, Tillis suggests that students get plenty of exercise during the week. “Students should get at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise three to five times per week,” Tillis said. “For those who

Cracking down
Kick back at Med Center Sponsored article
Students cheat with prescription drugs Ellen Goodacre | health 411 College campuses are infamous for being the breeding ground for experimentation of many kinds. Movies and television shows often portray the use of drugs and excess drinking as an aspect of the college experience, but many may wonder how realistic that portrayal is and illicit drug use is actually as common as the movies make it seem. “The majority of students don’t use illicit drugs,” Lt. Bret Collier with UH Department Of Public Safety said. “Students can get the impression from parents, the media and peers that rec-

Every month, the Texas Medical Center transforms the John P. McGovern Commons into a big party with the Evenings at The Commons events. Amenities include the six-story water wall and garage building, located at 6550 Bertner at Moursund Street. The Commons is in the heart of TMC near the Baylor College of Medicine and the MD Anderson Biosciences Research Building. EATC is open to the general public, especially students, employees, patients and visitors of the TMC member institutions. With about 160,000 visitors and 70,000 students on the main campus daily, the organization seeks ways to offer them enter-
tainment and a place to relax after class or work. Popular past EATC events include Cinco de Mayo festivities and a TMC Idol-themed night. “Students and employees love the great prizes and karaoke,” TMC Public Relations Specialist Alexa Enriquez said. During its summer concert series, EATC also featured live music with jazz and rhythm and blues performances. Check out the next event on Dec. 1 and jingle bell rock the night away to holiday karaoke and bingo. There is no cover charge and parking is validated.
