Letter from the Editor-in-Chief To the families joining us this weekend, Welcome to the University of South Carolina, and welcome to Columbia!

We hope you enjoy your time here. Parent’s Weekend is too short to really appreciate all the great things our university has to offer, but we hope that with this guide, you’ll be able to make the most of it. There’s plenty to do in these three short days, both on campus and off, and that can definitely be overwhelming. To help you navigate — literally — all the Parent’s Weekend festivities, we’ve included maps at the center of this section to direct you on when and where to go for all the many events offered this weekend.

The main attraction, of course, will be the football game Saturday night. The Gamecocks will be taking on the Kentucky Wildcats, who are coming off a loss to Florida last week. For a detailed preview of the game, check out the other special section in today’s issue, The Blitz. It includes information on what to expect from the Gamecocks’ defense and offense, as well as a preview of other games around the nation and in the SEC. If you’re not going to the game, there are still tons of fun things to do while you’re here. When the entire city is focused on what’s going on at Williams-Brice Stadium, the rest of Columbia is just waiting to be explored, so we’ve included a guide to making the most of an empty city. A few other varsity sports have games this weekend, too. Men’s soccer is taking on Tulsa, and volleyball is facing Texas A&M, both on Sunday.

And as your sons and daughters are undoubtedly looking forward to a break from ramen noodles and meal plan food, we’ve included a list of the best restaurants Columbia has to offer.

We’ve also compiled a “year in review” to help you catch up on everything that’s gone on in Columbia and around campus since the semester began.

Parents, thank you for all you do. We can’t wait to see you and show you all USC and Columbia has to offer.

Welcome, Parents!

My name is Chase Mizzell, and it is my pleasure as student body president to welcome you to Columbia and to the University of South Carolina. I hope this weekend reassures you of your student’s great decision to study at Carolina.

Student Government is working to ensure that your student’s experience at USC is as enjoyable and impactful as possible. One new initiative launched by SG is the USC Bucket List. It is a list of 100 things to do before they graduate, but you may enjoy doing some of the Bucket List items this weekend with your student. If you spot Cocky at the Parents Weekend tailgate or at the game, make sure to mark off No. 33: Take a snapshot with Cocky!

As our first academic break approaches, I want to make you aware of an initiative that Student Government has created to make your student’s travel home more convenient. Student Government sponsors a free shuttle to the Columbia airport for fall break, Thanksgiving break and spring break. Your student can sign up for the shuttle on the SG website, www.sa.sc.edu/sg.

Also, we’re excited to inform you that later this semester, students will be able to use Carolina Cash at select local businesses, which will include restaurants, a dry cleaner, a grocery store and other options. We encourage all students to take advantage of this new convenience!

Just two months in, this year is shaping up to be an eventful one at USC. Harris Pastides is marking his fifth year as university president with an off er to keep tuition fl at, Student Government has discovered a set of rules they passed years ago and subsequently lost and the 3-1 football team is trying to claw

its way back into the hunt for the SEC championship.

And that doesn’t even count everything that happened last year.

It ’s hard to keep up with what’s happening on campus even if you’re here every day, so here’s a recap of what you may have missed.

At his State of the University address, Harris Pastides called for a tuition freeze.

YEAR, CONTINUED FROM 6 Five years with Pastides USC has changed dramatically in the last five years.

Since Pastides was named p re s i d e nt i n 2 0 0 8 — j u s t weeks before unprecedented state budget cuts — tuition has gone above $10,000 a year for in-state students, and campus has gotten cramped with a growing student body.

The result: Because offi cials don’t think the student body or tuition rate can get any bigger, USC won’t be able to grow any more for a few years.

That is, unless they can convince state lawmakers to fork over more money.

Pastides asked for just that last month in his annual State

of th e U nive rsit y address .

He offered a three-year tuition freeze in return for what he called “fair funding” and money for state-mandated pay raises, rising health care costs and energy expenses.

Key lawmakers responded by praising the concept, adding that they’d need more details to sign on.

Ongoing building boom Regardless of if it gets more state cash, the university is looking to grow the student body again, even if not for a few years.

After 18 years of having to deal with your every whine and wimper, most parents somehow still miss having you around when you head off to college. Whether you traveled 10 miles or 1,000 to get to Columbia, seeing the baby bird that’s flown the nest is always an exciting occasion.

When you’re not around all the time, parents tend to be more generous. They don’t have to make you dinner or do your laundry anymore, but they still want to take care of you. On a visit, dinner, new clothes or even some extra cash can be tossed your way by your recent empty nesters of parents . While you shouldn’t be bratty or greedy, as a typical broke college student, yo u should definitely take advantage of the opportunity.

What pare nt s love most w h e n th ey v i s it i s g e t a taste of the local cuisine. In Columbia, we’re not talking caviar or foie gras, but this can still be an opportunity to get a nicer meal than can be found at Russell House.

Instead of getting the $5.99 special at Dominos, suggest Village Idiot or Thirsty Fellow for a slice of pizza. The higher-priced pies are made to order with unique ingredients at each restaurant, and maybe dad will even look the other way when you take a sip of his beer.

If your parents are in town for the football game, it’s a perfect time to show them wh at re a l g a m e d ay at tire

help out with. Take them for a ride in your old car; do you hear that squeak, too? There could be something wrong, and you sure can’t afford it.

And while you’re at it, look at that bed. You couldn’t aff ord a frame, so the box spring is sitting on the fl oor. Angle it right, and you could get a headboard thrown in too.

Your parents want the best for you. They want you to be as well-fed and well-clothed as you were in high school, and they want you to be living with all the comforts of home, whether that means being stuck in a dorm with

an obnoxious stranger or living in a house with your best friends.

Parents’ Weekend is a perfect time to capitalize on those generous feelings from mom and dad. Don’t make them empty their pockets, but graciously accept anything they offer, lest you eat ramen noodles as a family.

After they check in, be sure to take advantage of having your parents around for the weekend.

Whether you’re a parent reliving your college days at Carolina or a student trying to keep your dad from dancing outlandishly at the Beach Bash, you can always use a primer on how to do Parents Weekend right.

We asked Melissa Gentry, USC’s director of communication and events of parents programs, for her list of what to do — and what not to do — to make sure all participants who registered this year have the best time they can.

Here’s what she told us:

Columbia has a large selection of restaurants, cafés, and diners. There are many places to eat, no matter the time of day.

Whether you have a craving for a tall stack of pancakes or just a small cup of coffee, Columbia has places to get breakfast. Instead of traveling to the nearest Waffle House or IHOP, head over to The Original Pancake House, located off Forest Drive in Trenholm Plaza.

This family-friendly restaurant has a large menu dedicated to satisfy any breakfast cravings.

If you want breakfast close to campus, Immaculate Consumption has a great cup of cof fee and an extensive breakfast and lunch menu. This adorable café is located at the corner of Main and Pendleton streets.

DiPrato’s, a local favorite, has a delicious brunch menu.

DiPrato’s has everything from French toast covered in powdered sugar to homemade pasta salad.

Thirsty Fellow, known for its drinks and dinner menu, has a tasty Sunday brunch menu as well. Thirsty Fellow is behind the Carolina Coliseum on Gadsden Street.

Instead of buying your daily cup of coffee at Starbucks, support some of Columbia’s local cafés such as Drip (located on Main Street or Saluda Avenue), Cool Beans (College Street) and Café Strudel (State Street).

Columbia has many great places to grab a bite for lunch.

Mr. Friendly’s New Southern Café has new lunch and dinner specials everyday. There is not a better way to spend your evening dinning than at Mr. Friendly’s.

Yesterday’s is another great restaurant to find southern cooking. Less expensive than M r. Frie n d ly ’s , Ye s te rd ay ’s has delicious barbecued

chicken and banana pudding. It is located in the center of Five Points and has a man sitting in a bathtub on its roof.

Another more upscale restaurant is the Motor Supply Company Bistro. This restaurant creates its menu everyday and is located in the Vista.

Located across from Yesterday’s, Harper’s has fresh American cuisine and a wonderful atmosphere.

Finally, a great place to eat Chinese or Sushi is Miyo’s.

There are locations on Main Street and in the Vista.

1. Sandstorm To s o m e o n e w h o h a s never attended a C arolina fo otb a ll g a m e , exp e rie n cing “ Sandstorm” can be a little overwhelming — really overwhelming.

First played in 2006 against LSU, Darude’s loud and chaotic pump-up jam can get even the laziest fans going. At the climax of the music, fans all over Williams-Brice stadium go crazy.

People jump, wave towels and chant, “ U —S — C ! U —S — C ! ” until the end of the song, or at least until their legs and voices give out.

“Sandstorm” is played immediately following most of the Gamecocks’ touchdowns and just before kickoff and cuts off right when the kicker sends the ball flying through the air.

Ever y true Gamecock c an hear the subtle beginnings to “Sandstorm” and know exactly what’s to come.

So, parents, wear comfortable shoes, because unless you want to look like a Missouri f a n th i s we e ke n d , yo u ’re jumping to “Sandstorm” with the rest of us.

2. Cocky After fi rst appearing in 1980, Cocky has been bringing excitement to fans young and old.

He’s hard to miss, with his big yellow feet and big yellow beak, his Carolina jersey stitched with the number 01 and his white-gloved hands that wave around constantly,

At the very least, know if you’re shouting “Game” or “Cocks.” Watch the cheerleaders if you can’t figure it out.

beckoning fans to jump up and cheer.

Cocky is well-known for his entrance before the start of each home football game, in which the theme of “2001: A Space Odyssey” plays, Cocky bursts out of a covered cage and a gamecock crow rings through Williams-Brice, bringing fans to their feet.

Here at USC, our mascot puts in the “game” in Gamecock and gives us a reason to be the cockiest fans in all of the SEC.

3. Sir Big Spur Aside from Cocky, USC also

employs an actual gamecock nicknamed “Sir Big Spur,” who sits atop a remote-controlled perch that ’s operated from the sidelines.

The current Sir Big Spur is a ripe bird of six years old and the third gamecock to be used at USC sporting events.

This particular bird is perhaps the most popular of the live gamecocks that have been used, as he has been shown on national television 15 times and has his very own Twitter account.

Though he was just winging it in the beginning, the live gamecock now spurs excitement at each and every

sporting event he attends.

4. “Here’s a health, Carolina, forever to thee!”

The final line of the USC alma mater has become a tradition of its own. It’s custom for Gamecocks to raise their right hands and pantomime holding a cup as if offering a toast to Carolina. Many believe that the toast is directly related to the athletics of the school and offer up their toast and a thank you to the institution.

Although no one quite knows when this tradition started, it is one that’s upheld each time FIT IN, CONTINUED ON 17

Some students can take pride in the fact that they know all of the words to the school song, but most just know when to raise a glass.

5. The Clemson Rivalry Not familiar with the heated C a ro l i n a - C l e m s o n r iva l r y ?

Know this: While you’re at USC , you’re a Carolina fan.

Don’t even talk about Clemson on this campus. Just don’t.

Why? For star ters , the Gamecocks have battled the Tigers every single year since 1896, and though USC has won its last three football games against Clemson, the Tigers won the two games prior to the Gamecocks’ streak, and both teams are always on their toes when it comes time for the big matchup.

Various incidents over the years have furthered the rivalry, like the Carolina-Clemson sideline brawl in 2004 that cost both teams a bowl game, and when Cocky tackled the Tiger during halftime of last year’s Carolina-Clemson game.

So while you’re here, avoid wearing purple and orange, ro o t f o r t h e G a m e c o c k s , and feel free to yell out “Go Cocks!”

Football Tips from Parents Programs Be ready for gameday traffic.

Allow plenty of time to get to the stadium, and be prepared for heavy traffic delays. Have a plan for parking in advance. Parking lots often fill up quickly, so if you are planning to drive, you’ll want to leave for the game at least four hours (or more) before kickoff. Want to make sure you know where you’re going? Drive around the stadium area on Friday so you can become familiar with the roads and parking lot locations.

Where to park Public pay lots are available around the stadium. Starting three hours before kickoff, the university offers a shuttle that picks up at Colonial Life Arena/Carolina Coliseum Parking Lot B and drops off on Rosewood Drive, east of the Main Gate to the State Fairgrounds. The round-trip price is $3.50 per person. Shuttles run until 1.5 hours after the game with limited service throughout the game.

How to get from the shuttle drop off to the Tailgate Party The walk from the shuttle drop-off to the Tailgate Party is approximately 1.2 miles.

After getting off the shuttle, walk on Rosewood Drive toward Bluff Road. (Look for the Parents Weekend sign near the shuttle drop-off pointing you toward Bluff Road.) Turn left on Bluff Road, and walk to Williams-Brice Stadium. You will see Gamecock Park on your right, just across Bluff Road from the stadium. Walk through Gamecock

Do I need to bring food and drinks?

No. Plenty of food and drinks will be available at the Parents Weekend Tailgate Party. Come prepared to enjoy a traditional Southern tailgate party with great music by the Reggie Sullivan Band and the Carolina Marching Band.

How to get back to campus When the game is over, all traffic on Assembly Street will be directed toward campus. If you are on Bluff Road, you may be forced to travel south, away from Columbia. Simply get on I-77 North and exit at Garners Ferry Road heading west. Turn left, stay on Garners Ferry Road, pass Target and cross over Rosewood Drive.

The elder McKie is the South Carolina men’s basketball team’s all-time leading scorer with 2,119 points, and he had his jersey, No. 5, retired in 2005. B.J. McKie twice led the Gamecocks to the NCAA Tournament, and the team’s 15-1 conference record in 199697 is still the program’s best all-time finish in the SEC. In addition, that team’s 24 wins in the most in school history for a single season.

Justin McKie is in his first year for the Gamecocks and head coach Frank Martin. He played his high school basketball at Irmo and was ranked the No. 4 high school player in the state of South Carolina by ESPN. com.

Mark and Grayson Greiner Known as a hard-nosed forward, Mark Greiner was an integral piece and four-year letterwinner in what is still considered the golden age of basketball for the Gamecocks.

From 1 973 -76 , Mark was a backup for legendary coach Frank McGuire. He was a member of two NCAA Tournament te a m s , i n c l u d i n g t h e l a s t Gamecock team to win a tournament game — and last to advance to the Sweet 16 — as a freshman for the 1973 squad.

Grayson Greiner followed a different path, baseball, and became one of the most highly sought-after catchers in high school. He joined the Gamecocks in 2011 and became an immediate factor, playing FAMILY, CONTINUED ON 29

FAMILY, CONTINUED FROM 27 in 62 games as a freshman in 2012 and 57 last year. Although he is known for his defensive prowess, Greiner had a breakthrough off ensive season this past spring, hitting .298 with 10 doubles and four homers.

Now, both of the redshirt thirdye a r so p h o m o re d efe n sive linemen are starting to make an impact for the Gamecocks.

Gerald Jr., a defensive tackle, has registered nine tackles in four games, including a sack.

His younger brother, Gerald, a defensive end, has recovered a fumble and been credited with a quarterback hurry, while also playing in all four games.

Their father, Gerald Sr., was a linebacker for the Gamecocks from 1990-91. He was drafted in the third round (78th overall) by the Cleveland Browns in the 1992 NFL Draft and went on to have a nine-year career. He played in 136 career games and had 60 starts for Cleveland, Cincinnati and San Diego. He finished his career with 23 sacks and five interceptions.

Buddy and Kelcy Quarles Kelcy Q uarles , a junior

defensive tackle, is a two-year starter and vital piece of the Gamecocks defense this year.

In four star ts, he has nine tackles, three sacks, two quarterback hurries and a fumble recovery. He is widely considered to be one of the best defensive lineman in the SEC. Back in 2010, he was a member of ESPN.com’s 150, which annually ranks the top 150 high school prospects in the country.

B u d dy Q u a rles wa s a key of fensive lineman for head coach Joe Morrison and the G a m e co c k s f ro m 1 9 8 4 - 87.

He was a member of both Gamecock teams that went to the Gator Bowl in the mid-’80s, including the 1984 team that set the school record for wins in a season. That record stood for 27 years, until 2011 when the Gamecocks won 11 games in 2011, his son Kelcy’s freshman season.

Shed and Jordan Diggs Jordan Diggs, a redshirt freshman, is making the most of his first season of eligibility for the Gamecocks. He’s played in all four games and registered five tackles, including two for a loss. He came to the Gamecocks as one of top high school safety prospects in the country back in 2012.

1. Embrace the tailgate: At USC, tailgating is a sport of its own. Every Saturday (and occasionally Thursday), students and fans gather in the numerous tailgating lots to participate in the pregame festivities. For parents, the sheer length of these tailgates may be overwhelming.

Our advice: Pace yourself. Tailgating is more of a marathon than it is a sprint.

Challenge another couple to a game of corn hole, and grab some snacks. Enjoy the southern hospitality, because there will be plenty of food and drinks to go around.

2 . Avoid posters: Cheering on the Gamecocks is expected and encouraged.

With more than 80,000 fans packed into Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday, it’s pretty easy for one to blend in with the crowd. Students hope their parents can do so when they visit for the Kentucky game this weekend. In most students’ minds, any attention is bad attention.

Save the trip for poster supplies, and come to the game as you are, ready to make some noise.

East of Five Points is Devine Street, which is home to Columbia’s more upscale preppy clothing stores.

From helmet-flying hits to dominating victories in postseason tournaments to upsets over top-10 teams, South Carolina has had an iconic year.

Both men’s and women’s sports had memorable memories, ranging from multiple postseason appearances to comeback wins. The top 10 moments of Gamecock sports in 2013 are full of big achievements.

No. 10 - The men’s tennis team reached the NCAA tournament earlier this year. After fi nishing the season 18-10, the team traveled to host-school Duke for its fi rst-round matchup against UNC-Wilmington.

While the Gamecocks lost, the team notched back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances and its fourth appearance in five years.

No. 9 - The men’s soccer team came back against Charlotte to tally its fi rst conference win of the season on Sept. 27. The team scored two unanswered goals to beat the 49ers 2-1 and improve to 1-0 in Conference USA. The team, who was on a five game winless streak, improved to 3-4-2 on the season.

No. 8 - The Gamecock baseball team defeated No. 2 LSU in a best-of-three series in Baton Rouge, La., home to one of the most daunting atmospheres in college baseball. South Carolina pulled off the upset on the way to their 14th-straight postseason appearance.

No. 7 - The men’s basketball team beat O le Miss on an

Eric Smith 3-point shot with 27 seconds left in March. The Gamecocks beat the heavily favored Rebels in a shocking fashion, helping the team improve to 13-13 overall and 3-10 in the SEC. No. 6 - The women’s soccer team’s upset of seventh-ranked Duke on Aug. 25 gave the Gamecocks a then 3-0 record.

The Danielle Au game-winning goal came in the fi rst half, and the victor y helped fuel the team’s fast start, and it was the first time the Gamecocks beat a top-10 team in two years.

No. 5 - Despite a heartbreaking loss in the NCAA regional tournament, the softball team making the finals of the Austin, Texas, regional was a highlight of the year. The Gamecocks beat H ouston t wice in the tournament but came up short twice against Texas, including a 6-0 defeat in the championship game.

Even though the Gamecocks watched as Taylor Thom hit two homeruns, they reached the regionals for the fi rst time since 2007, which is a big achievement for the team.

No. 2 - After coming back to beat Saint Louis, the men’s baseball team blew out Liberty 19-3 and then beat them again to win the regional. The regional victory was not only a dominating performance, but it was the team’s fourth straight regional win.

N o. 1 - By now, ever yone knows the Gamecocks’ top moment of the year. It was the hit heard round the world.

J a d eve on Clown ey ’s skullcrushing hit on Vincent Smith was broadcast on a 24-hour loop on ESPN, and it put Clowney’s name on the map for good. The game itself ended with a dramatic

last-second drive capped off by a touchdown pass from Dylan Thompson to B ruce Ellington. The victor y gave South C arolina its secondstraight 11-win season, the first time that has happened in program history.

While the game ranked in the top 5 of ESPN’s best college football games of 2012-2013, the hit was still the most remembered for the pulverizing hit.

Overall, Gamecock athletics has had a dominating year.

From the Clowney hit to the upset over Duke, even down to the dramatic buzzer beaters, South Carolina teams have created memorable moments through the year that won’t be forgotten.

No. 4 - The women’s equestrian team won their first-ever SEC championship in March. The team beat top-ranked Auburn to win the honor.

The equestrian team will take on Delaware State Friday and SMU on Saturday in Dover, Del. The equestrian team is currently ranked third in the nation and is coming off consecutive victories last weekend in the season opener over No. 5 Kansas State (15-5) and Fresno State (17-2) at One Wood Farm in Blythewood.

The women’s volleyball team is preparing for two SEC matchups in Columbia. The Lady Gamecocks will host Arkansas on Friday and Texas A&M will visit Sunday.

The team is currently 9-5 overall and 1-1 against SEC opponents, with a loss at Missouri and a home victory against Tennessee. The

volleyball team is currently 6-0 at home, but has struggled in away games, going 3-5 on the road and at neutral sites.

The men’s soccer team (4-4-2) is also home this weekend and takes on Tulsa in ConferenceUSA action Sunday at Stone Stadium. They haven’t lost at home all year, compiling a 3-02 record, but have struggled to gain points on the road.

The No. 15 Gamecock women’s soccer team is 9-1-1 so far this season and 2-1 in SEC play. The team will travel to Gainesville, Fla., Friday to face No. 18 Florida, and then will head to Knoxville, Tenn., Sunday to face the Volunteers. The Gamecocks are undefeated at home (7-0) and have only one road loss to date.

The Congaree Bluegrass Festival will showcase bands such as Southern Gospel Express, Barefoot and Restless, Split Rail, Willy Wells and Blueridge

Caught up in snarled traffic? It might have something to do with re novations to the Women’s Quadrangle on Greene and Bull streets. Or a pedestrian safety project on Assembly Street. Or the construction of the new Darla Moore School of Business by the Carolina Coliseum.

And that’s not to mention the renovation of Petigru College (across from the Women’s Quad), plans to fix up the Arnold School of Public Health (at Greene and Sumter streets) a n d H a m ilto n C o ll e g e (o n Pendleton and Pickens street) or a number of projects to get better facilities for non-revenue sports.

And USC is getting ready to trade two of its Coliseum parking lots for a privately funded apartment complex.

Lost codes Student Government will be growing some, too, this year.

This semester saw a strange revelation; a student organization took SG to a student-run trial in an effort to establish a second legislative body, the house of delegates.

As it turns out, SG

representatives a few years ago voted to create a body to represent student organizations and later forgot about the law. It never made it onto the books.

T h e s t u d e n t- r u n Constitutional Council last month decided that because SG planned to establish the house regardless of the trial’s outcome, there was no need to rule on it.

SG now has a little under a month to convene the house of delegates.

Athletics The football team is off to the 3-1 start, but it might not be enough to get the Gamecocks to the SEC championship.

Because of a road loss to Georgia earlier in the season, the Bulldogs are poised to return to Atlanta for a third straight year.

That’s despite an unusually easy conference schedule for South Carolina, who won’t face wes t- divisio n p owe rh o uses Alabama, LSU or Texas A&M this year.

While you;re spending time on Main Street, check out the “Before I die…” wall on the 1600 block and write down your own dream on the chalk wall.

Also located on Main Street is the Columbia Museum of Art. Famous photographer Annie Leibovitz currently has an exhibit at the Museum of Art called “Pilgrimage.”

The South Carolina State Museum is another great place to take the family. The Museum is located on Gervais Street near the Gervais Street Bridge. The River Runner Outdoor Center offers a large selection of boats, kayaks and canoes to be rented and used on the Congaree River. So instead of watching the game on TV, spend your afternoon sailing on the river looking at the beautiful scenery of South Carolina. Another great way to spend the afternoon is ziplining over the Riverbanks Zoo. Everyday at 12:30 p.m., there is an exciting diving demonstration at the aquarium exhibit. Ndoki Forest features beautiful and exotic animals from Africa such as elephants, meerkats and gorillas. Another beautiful aspect of the zoo is the botanical garden. The garden has various flowers and plants to smell and touch.
