Lake’s claim to wind fame draws crowds
O
ver the last 17 years, a shallow little lake in the southwest corner of Minnesota known as Lake Okabena has become a premier spot for windsurfing in the Upper Midwest. How the heck did that happen? It all started with the efforts of a couple of fast-talking salesman — Bill Keitel and Jeff Hegwer, known as the founders of the Worthington Windsurfing Regatta and Unvarnished Music Festival. “My friend, Bob Cashel, and I were visiting, and he told me that this was perhaps the second windiest region in the Midwest,” recalled Keitel for a story in the Daily Globe. “Fargo (N.D.) is probably windier, but
Fargo doesn’t have a lake. That led me to believe we had the windiest lake in the Midwest, so I spent quite a bit of time pondering the wind and how we could use it to benefit our community. The wind generators today, at long last, provide a visual signpost and testament to our claim of having the best wind in the Midwest.” Initially, Keitel’s claims and attempts to promote the wind as a positive thing were met with skepticism. But he and Hegwer — who were both windsurfers and knew firsthand about the conditions that prevailed on the waters of Lake Okabena — knew they were on to something. They recruited a few other believers, formed a group called Worthington Okabena Windsurfers and planned the

first Regatta in 1999. “That was an exciting time, all by the seat of our pants,” recounted Keitel. “It was modestly orchestrated. That very first year, we went and produced a little die-cut brochure with some seed money and distributed that at windsurfer swap meets in the Twin Cities. ... We had great wind, people showed up a day or two early, and the city of Worthington was so accommodating.” Adding music into the mix was something of a fluke, according to Keitel, who is an accomplished guitar player and performer. “That first year, after the racing was completed, we joined a bunch of the windsurfers at the campground and sat around and played music, and we

thought what happened at the campground should be part of the festival.” Since those humble beginnings, the Regatta and music festival have grown and prospered. Worthington has now hosted the U.S. Windsurfing National Championships three times, most recently in 2014. Hegwer eventually assumed race director duties for the Regatta and plans and oversees all the sailing contests that take place during the festival. Keitel has stepped back from planning duties of the festival, but remains an integral part of promoting and celebrating the windy conditions that prevail along the shores of the lake that he calls home. He has also served on the U.S. Windsurfing board of directors.

YMCA sponsors Shimmer Run WORTHINGTON — Bright fluorescent powders will be thrown on runners and walkers of the 5K UV Splash Shimmer Run, commonly known as the Color Dash, during the Windsurfing Regatta and Music Festival. Participants last year were splashed with colors in a liquid form. This year, though, organizers have opted to switch back to the non-toxic powder substance. Black lights will be set up around the race near where the powder is thrown so participants can better see the colors, said Worthington Area YMCA Executive Director Andy Johnson. The race will take place at dusk, around 9 p.m. “We want to do something different every year. The powder seemed to work really well,” he said, adding that the substance is dry and is easier to clean up. The event is untimed, and anyone may participate. “It’s a fun 5k — you can run, walk, crawl or roll,” Johnson said. Grandmas, grandpas, moms, dads and kids alike are invited to the 5k. People have even run the 5k with
15
strollers, said Johnson. He recommends runners and walkers dress up in white clothes, so the colored powder will shine bright under the black lights. Anything is allowed, though, as Johnson recalled people wearing tutus and other costumes to the event. “It’s very fun and has a carnival-like atmosphere,” he continued. The course starts in a parking lot between Ninth and 10th streets off of Second Avenue and continues toward Prairie Elementary, where attendees will loop around back to the parking lot. “It’s about going out there and having a good time,” Johnson said, adding that it was raining the year the 5k had the most participants. For the first time, a giant blow-up waterslide may be near the event, he added. Participants are not required to register to slide. Officials are still in the process of finalizing if the slide will be a part of the festivities at the Regatta. To register for the 5K UV Splash Shimmer Run, go to ymcaworthington. org. Participants can also register at the event.

Kids Zone offers activities for young festivalgoers The 2016 Windsurfing Regatta and Music Festival will offer something for all ages, including a Kid Zone for the youngest of the festival attendees. For a second year, Client Community Services Inc. will sponsor and oversee the carnival games in the Kids Zone. “We had a great time last year,” said CCSI Executive Director Jeri Schettler. “Each (CCSI group) home had staff and individuals who live there come down and work at it, and they just had a ball.”

CCSI plans the same types of activities this year — a selection of carnival games with goodie bag prizes and temporary tattoos. There will also be a large sandpile with sand toys in which the children can play. Additionally, the AOK Club from Worthington High School will provide crafting activities. “That really complemented what we did,” said Schettler. “The children would come over to us and then go to them, and vice versa.” The Kids Zone will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Hitchville kicks off the musical celebration Hitchville, a seven-person band with Minnesota roots ,will start the festivities with the first musical performance Friday at the 2016 Windsurfing Regatta and Unvarnished Music Festival. Lead vocalists are Heidi Owens and Mathew Kneefe. Lead guitarist is Jesse Ray Ernster. Other band members listed on the ensemble’s website are Doug Louiselle on vocals and drums, Martial on keyboards, Kris on vocals and bass, and multi-instrumental vocalist Marv on fiddle, mandolin, banjo and guitar. Hitchville has opened
the stage for many wellknown country singers, including Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts, Toby Keith, Luke Bryan and Blake Shelton. A recent gig for Hitchville was a Minnesota Vikings and Miller Lite beach party at the Hard Rock Hotel in Cancun, Mexico. Hitchville’s songs have become well-known across the United States. Their hit single “Even When It’s Bad It’s Good,” went to No. 1 on the iHeartRadio Top 5 Countdown in 2015. Other singles like “Whoop It Up” and “Fly” can still be heard on the radio and even at Minnesota Twins home games.
The band members have also recently accomplished one of their dreams of hosting their own country music and camping festival. Last year was the first Hitchville Hootenanny. Its success has encouraged the band to host its second annual Hitchville Hootenanny Aug. 12 in Danbury, Wis.
Based out of Minneapolis, the country band recorded its second album in Nashville

‘The Voice’ — Kat Perkins RYAN MCGAUGHEY rmcgaughey@dglobe.com Kat Perkins rocked “The Voice” during the 2014 season of the NBC vocal competition series. Two years later, Perkins will rock Worthington when she takes the stage Friday night during the 17th annual Windsurfing Regatta and Music Festival. Perkins may now travel around the Midwest to numerous concerts and festivals and call the Twin Cities home, but she has by no means forgotten her small-town roots. Perkins grew up in the diminutive southwest North Dakota of Scranton (population 281) and graduated from high school there. Music was a significant part of her life at an early age, thanks to her upbringing. “My dad was a music teacher for nearly 40 years,” Perkins said, “and my mom has been a church organist my whole life. She was sort of influential in getting me started in piano. Actually, she was more like, ‘you’re taking piano lessons.”’ Perkins began performing at county fairs and other events — frequently
with her older sister, Kelly — as early as age 7. It wasn’t long before the Perkins siblings were dreaming of a potential musical career. “My uncle was a songwriter in Nashville, and he wrote some tunes for us and had us sing them,” Perkins remembered. “My uncle, he was really interesting in managing us. … and we recorded in Colorado because my uncle had some contacts there, so we didn’t have to pay an arm and a leg to have our first studio experience. … We were really young, and it was a perfect experience for us at that age.” Perkins was 12 or 13 when “The Perkins Sisters” was recorded, while her sister was five years older. But while Kat still longed to record music and perform, Kelly had other aspirations. “She went off to college and went in a different direction; she wanted to make music more a hobby than career,” Perkins said. “In 1998, I auditioned for the Medora Musical … and was in the musical in 1999, at age 18 and right of high school.” Perkins soon became a featured performer in the musical, of which she
was a part for five years. She recorded a collection of country music covers in the early 2000s, but was already getting intrigued by another sound. “My last year of the musical, I started to write music and it was not country — it was more like this rock genre,” she recalled. “So when we got home that year from the musical — I was already living in Minneapolis — I kind of wanted to start a band.” Perkins contacted three male musicians she’d met in Minneapolis — a drummer, guitarist and bass player. “It was like, “I want you guys to help record these rock songs,” she said.

“After the third song we recorded in the studio, we were like, ‘hey, I think we’ve got something.” That “something” became a band, Scarlet Haze, that played together for years, opened for Bon Jovi in a 2005 show and still performs occasionally, most recently in November at The Caboose in Minneapolis. Two of the Scarlet Haze veterans still play with Perkins today and will travel to Worthington as part of a five-person ensemble.

Perkins and her fellow musicians found work performing overseas for American troops, and that ended up leading to her stint on “The Voice.” A YouTube clip of her singing Adele’s “Someone Like You” caught the attention of the program’s producers, who contacted her for an audition. Her voice was a powerful instrument despite vocal cord surgery that had kept her away from performing for an extended period. “Since they had asked me to audition, I didn’t have ious classic rock bands. to stand on line or anything. … It was really an awesome level to be at,” she said. “I had written down They’re currently workfour songs that I really loved, and they looked at ing on a new CD, “True them and said, ‘We don’t want to hear any of that. Murphy Brothers Band performs classic rock ANDREA MAGANA Daily Globe
The Murphy Brothers Band will bring its professional guitar rock show to the Worthington stage on Saturday afternoon. The band started off as The Epicureans in 1966, playing covers from groups like Deep Purple and Vanilla Fudge. The band then changed its name to Highway in 1972, and in 1980 became the Murphy Brothers Band. The band was started by brothers Steve and Mike Murphy, who exhibited a passion for music at a young age. Steve remembers telling his parents his desire for his first guitar at age 12. The brothers played in bands throughout their lives, which is why they decided to start their own. Various talented musicians have played in the Murphy Brothers Band since 1980, but Steve has
stayed with the band since day one. Mike no longer plays in the band, but keeps in touch and helps when he can. “My brother retired several years ago, but we’re all brothers in music,” said Steve. Today vocalist Jason Anderson plays the bass, Jay Flugum plays the drums and vocalists Greg George and Steve Murphy play the guitar. Rockin’ the ’80’s
ANDREA MAGANA Daily Globe The Brat Pack Radio Supershow will perform Saturday on the Regatta stage for the first time. The band was started 13 years ago when lead singer Ryan Lance and his wife decided they were ready to settle down and have a family. However, they weren’t ready to give up their passion for performing. The question that led them to the creation of the band was, “How can we do karaoke and get paid for it?”
Their decision to start a band has led them to numerous, remarkable performance opportunities and awards. Lance is a four-time Emmy Award-winning songwriter, and his wife is an actress, model and prominent musician. A founding member of The Blenders, an a cappella group, Lance has performed professionally for 26 years. The Blenders had their music featured in the Queen Latifah film,“The Perfect Holiday,” and the film trailer for “Nothing Like the Holidays.” They have also appeared on television shows including “The Today Show,” “The Arsenio Hall Show” and on Chicago superstation WGN. Lance’s wife stepped down six years ago and her talented sister, Jesse Langseth, took her place on the stage. Langseth was a semi-finalist on the eighth season of “American Idol.” Langseth’s and Lance’s professional experiences have helped The Brat Pack Radio Supershow give its audience a night to remember. “It’s colorful, and it’s a little bit of everything,” said Lance. The band identifies as a ’80s-centric pop show band. They cover anything from ’80s rock including AC/DC and Van Halen to ’80s pop, rhythm and blues including Michael Jackson. They also cover 21-century music including Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Justin Timberlake and do a rap medley of Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer. Brat Pack Radio goes above and beyond for its audiences by adding theatrical elements throughout the performance. The members of the band also go by character stage names to add to the theatrical aspect of their “supershow.” “(Our show) is theatrical from what we wear to the lighting, and the song fights tie everything together,” said Lance. Brat Pack Radio is bringing more than its music to the 2016 Windsurfing Regatta and Music Festival. It will be a lively performance for the entire family. “We’re a good group of musicians that just want to have fun,” said Lance.

Chair auction to help preserve local history WORTHINGTON — Over the past 12 years, the Daily Globe Regatta Chair Auction has netted nearly $41,000 for local charities. Benefactors have included a variety of local entities, from the Worthington Hospice Cottage and Love INC, to Honor Flight Southwest Minnesota, the Freedom Veterans Memorial and improvements to Sailboard Beach. This year, the auction is hoped to raise thousands of dollars for the Nobles County Historical Society. The society has plans to publish two books detailing segments of Worthington’s history, and all of the money will go toward the cause.
The books being readied for print include a pictorial history of Nobles County 1870 to pre-World War II, and the second, written by former Daily Globe editor and local historian Ray Crippen, shares stories of the Worthington Depot and railroad history. Crippen completed the book before his death last December. Jerry Fiola, a longtime friend of Crippen, said the former newspaperman had compiled stories filling approximately a dozen chapters. “Ray has a composite of different things about the depot — about the construction, information about Elias Drake, who brought the railroad here, to other stories about
people in Worthington who worked in different capacities with the trains,” Fiola shared. Before his death, Crippen passed the publishing rights to the NCHS, and the project has begun to take shape. Publishing a book, though, is more expensive than the society’s resources can afford. Already, volunteers have retyped Crippen’s entire manuscript and continue to work through the process of copyright issues on some of the photos they want to include in the book. The second book — on Nobles County’s early history — is a project of Arcadia Publishing. The company has produced numerous historical picture books in other
counties. Fiola said the book will feature a variety of aspects of life in Nobles County, from businesses and main streets to education, religion, hobbies and interests, agriculture and town festivals. “We’re in the process of selecting the photos and writing the descriptions,” he said. While there has never been a theme for decorating the chairs to be auctioned, Erwin said some artists choose to make their design relevant to the charity receiving the funds. In years when the proceeds went to the Honor Flight or Freedom Veterans Memorial, several chairs featured a patriotic look. Last year, when Nobles County Pheasants Forever was the benefactor,

designs on a few chairs included blaze orange or pheasants in flight. This year’s Regatta Chair Auction will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, just prior to the evening headliner concert. The change in time is hoped to capitalize on the crowd and earn as much money as possible for the NCHS. “(NCHS) is a very worthy cause, and the Daily Globe is one of the most historic businesses in Worthington,” said Denise Erwin, Daily Globe employee and auction organizer. Nine adult-sized Adirondack chairs and one child set will be auctioned by Jack Sliver. The Fulda Area Credit Union is donating the children’s set, which includes two child chairs
with a table. The set is being made by Tim Haugen, husband of Julie Pater, Worthington branch manager. The employees of the Worthington branch will paint the chairs. As for the nine full-size chairs, they are painted by a variety of artists. Among the returning artists are Sue Nau of Java Nau, Marthaler Ford’s Ray Norling, Marthaler Chevy’s Anthony Lumsden and Daily Globe graphic artist Lisa Severance. Chair sponsors are Avera Medical Group, Java Nau, Kustom Threadz Embroidery, Lampert’s, Marthaler Chevrolet, Marthaler Ford, Merck, Radio Works and VFW Post 3958.

Drake White & The Big Fire to headline weekend It’s been a busy — and career-changing — last couple of months for Drake White. In addition to touring nationally with the Zac Brown Band, White made his national television debut in April on “The Today Show,” and followed that up in May with a segment on “Good Morning America” during which White went camping with ABC special contributor Jesse Palmer in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. And this coming weekend, White and his band will head to the beach — Sailboard Beach — for a performance at the Worthington Windsurfing Regatta & Music Festival. A native of Alabama, White scored a Top 40 country hit with “The Simple Life” in 2013 and was named one of Billboard’s “10 Hot Country Artists to Watch in 2015.” In September 2015, White released his first full-length album, “It Feels Good,” for which he worked with renowned producers Ross Copperman and Jeremy Stover. The second single off the album, “Livin’ the Dream,” is currently making its way up the country charts and is currently in the Top 30. “I’m just doing what comes naturally to me, and I try not to overthink it,” White noted in the biography on his website, drakewhite.com. “I go out there and do what I know and what I love, and I try to write honestly and say what I think, and trust that people will recognize that it’s authentic.” White’s Band — The Big Fire — has evolved into a formidable, close-knit unit through years of hardscrabble roadwork. Band members are Adam Schwind (drums), Philip Pence (bass), Matt McDaniel (guitar) and Jon Aanestad (fiddle). “Growing up listening to The Band and The Eagles and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, I realized how powerful it can be to get a group of like-minded individuals who all have their own voices, but who share a common goal,” White said. “We’re definitely a diverse bunch, but we all have a common vision for what we want this band to sound like. They’re all very well-versed in Southern roots, in country music and gospel music and rock music, and that all comes through in what we create together.” White’s goal is to create music that resonates with the people in the audience. “I’m writing songs about the experiences that we all share — dealing with love and chasing a dollar and being knocked down and coming back — and trying to write from an honest standpoint. I think that people gravitate toward what’s real, and that’s what I’m trying to create.”

Come along for the ride
BETH RICKERS brickers@dglobe.com WORTHINGTON— While the windsurfers test their skills Saturday on the waves of Lake Okabena, athletes of a different sort will pedal the byways in and around Worthington. The Worthington Regatta Bike Ride was added to the Regatta’s schedule of events about nine years ago and has proved to be a popular alternative for outdoor enthusiasts. This year there will be four routes from which to choose, ranging from a short 7.5-mile journey on Worthington’s bike paths to an endurance testing 50-mile trek through southwest Minnesota. “Last year, we added the seven-mile route, which goes on the trail around the lake,” explained Kenton Meier, one of the event’s organizers. “Per a request that came from one of the riders last year, this time we will have someone lead them on that one, so there will be 7-, 15-, 30- and 50-mile routes.” Registration will begin at 8 a.m. at Centennial Park, and the bicyclers will set off on their respective routes at 9 a.m.
“People can go at their own pace,” said Meier. “Sometimes people think it’s a race, and it’s not that at all. You can ride at your own pace, and on whatever route you want to ride.” Registration entitles bicyclists to participate in the ride, a dry-fit T-shirt emblazoned with a Regatta Bike Ride design (designed by local artist Brad Behrends) and food coupons to use at the vendors set up along Sailboard Beach. Bicyclists are required to wear helmets, Meier noted, and a support vehicle will patrol the longer routes in case participants are in need of assistance. “And we do have rest areas out there also,” he added. Participants who register get the advantage of a reduced fee and also guarantee themselves a T-shirt on the day of the ride. Forms are available at the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce. Riders may also register that morning, but may have to get their T-shirt at a later date, depending on size and available supply. For more information, contact the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce, 372-2919; go to worthingtonmnchamber.com.
