Two weeks before Christmas, during reindeer trials Santa hitched up his sleigh to test drive a few miles. A new crop of reindeer was in training to lead Santa and his sleigh filled with toys on Christmas Eve. There was Jack and Bob and Danny and Bruce. Johnny and Skip and Aiden and Zeus. A replacement for Rudolph, though, was not to be found. Would his red nose not be needed to light up the ground? Up, up and away, the reindeer did go Santa and his sleigh o’er the arctic below. Above houses and mountains and frozen lakes, too. If Santa wasn’t working, he might enjoy the view. The reindeer were speedy and smart as they flew But how was their landing? Oh, if Santa only knew!

Practice makes perfect — at least that’s what they say. If only the reindeer could park in some hay! But up on a rooftop they must learn to land That’s a much harder feat than on a beach full of sand. Santa pulled on the reins; their destination would be A pitched roof on the shores of the Siberian Sea. “On Jack and Bob and Danny and Bruce On Johnny and Skip and Aiden and Zeus “Take us in softly and gently and slow Let’s get this right so we’ll be ready to go. In their excitement, the team failed to stop And the peak of the roof — well, they overshot With a snap and a scream and a mighty hard crash Santa and his team broke through ice in a splash.

The noise was so loud, people woke to the clatter And came from their doors to see what was the matter. The reindeer were clawing their way toward shore With ol’ Santa shivering in his red suit of lore. Though he ached and he pained, he yelled into the night, “Someone call Mrs. Claus; tell her I’ll be alright!”

When Mrs. Claus got the call, she sprang to her feet She must get Santa home; there was a deadline to meet! Remembering the help from Worthington last year, Christy Claus called the The Globe and spoke of her fear. “Santa is too hurt to deliver the toys To all of the good little girls and boys. “Can you send some help up the North Pole way And have it arrive by Christmas Eve day?” The Globe staff, as is usual, went to work rather quick Finding businesses who could help, and help lickity split.

Sporting new tires, the trucks set to head north They had a deadline to reach — December 24th! But empty trailers wouldn’t do. There was plenty they lacked. Donated toys, food and aid all needed to be packed. All bandaged and bruised, Santa took to rest But it was clear that his elves could step in and do their best. And as Mr. Claus sat thinking of all of the chores Southwest Minnesota businesses were opening their doors.

With each truck and trailer filled to the brim, Onward the drivers went singing Christmas hymns. They drove day and night, through sunshine and snow Remembering their deadline, it was go, go, go… And as the fleet traversed the tundra so cold They were halted by a sign that said “Road Closed.” Not to be stopped, the drivers called back to base More help was necessary to finish this race.
