J. Briones Construction a model of hard work, skill and persistence By Jane Turpin Moore The Globe WORTHINGTON — If persistence, professionalism and an unwavering work ethic are traits you value, you might wish to enlist J. Briones Construction for a future project. Founded by married couple Joe and Juanita Marroquin Briones in 2012, J. Briones Construction specializes in the remodeling of building exteriors. “Siding, windows, asphalt shingles or steel roofs — we do it all, and we make everything look better,” said Juanita, 40, mentioning they work within a 50-mile radius of Worthington. “We also do bathrooms, tile, hardwood floors, interior window trim and kitchen cabinets, and anything we don’t do ourselves is sub-contracted out to other local contractors that we have great relationships with.”
Joe’s skill in construction developed over a number of years, but he’s a natural at it. “He started working with Mike Edwards [of ME The Werks Construction] in 2010, and he also remodeled our house and rental houses, but it took him a while to gain the courage to say, ‘Let’s start our own company,’” related Juanita. An initial barrier holding Joe back was language. His English ability constantly improves, but it hadn’t developed as quickly as his considerable construction skills. Juanita, however, is completely bilingual in English and Spanish, having been born and raised in Texas until moving to Mountain Lake at age 12 with her mother. “All the [construction] licensing and certification is done in English,” she said.

“But Joe does such a good job with his work that Worthington’s building official, Armand Eshleman, urged us to go for it.” With Eshleman’s encouragement, the couple decided to pool their respective strengths. “It wasn’t easy — really, it was so hard — but Joe taught me everything I needed to know so that I could take the tests,” said Juanita. “He helped me study [for the licensing exams],” she continued. “I told him the questions in English, he offered examples and explained everything thoroughly in Spanish, then I had to translate it back into English to match it all up.” Juanita attended mandatory education classes in Bloomington and then had to travel to Edina to be tested. “The whole process took about six months,” said Juanita. Juanita was allowed two hours for the 50-question test, but she was surprised to learn after her first attempt that there were different/additional questions on the exam than those included in the study guide. “It wasn’t always the same test — there were totally different questions — so by the time I passed it on my fourth try, the test administrators knew me by my first name,” Juanita laughed. “They were so excited for me when I finally passed it, with a score of 85.” Thus, Juanita also has a broad knowledge of construction skills and standards, while Joe possesses
the hands-on skills to tackle every project with confidence and assurance. “I’m the document/paper lady, and J. Briones Construction has been properly licensed and insured since 2012,” Juanita said proudly. The Brioneses praise City of Worthington staff for their encouragement as they initiated their company, and Juanita said other local contractors work cooperatively with them as well. “We have good communication with them, and we work well and frequently with several other contractors,” said Juanita. “We’re keeping busy with projects throughout each year.” Together, Joe, 42, and Juanita have five children in their blended family. They married in 2010, after each had
experienced a previous marriage, and they couldn’t be happier with the life — and company — they have built together. “Our son, Rey, is 4 years old now,” said Juanita. “When we have time, we like to just hang out at home on our acreage south of Worthington, where we have a collection of miniature ponies.” Earlier in her adult life, Juanita worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant at nursing homes in St. James and Worthington. Even as their construction company has grown more successful, Juanita has kept her “day job” (from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.) as office coordinator for PSSI, the contracting company that provides sanitation workers for JBS and other area food production facilities. “Then, after 2 p.m., I start working with Joe,” said the energetic woman, who is quick to credit Eshleman and others with helping nudge them along the road to business ownership. Although Juanita’s early years were spent in Texas, and as a young teenager she dreamed of returning there, she and Joe have embraced
Worthington and its surrounding region as their forever home. “We love the school system here, and the town, and the greater community,” said Juanita. “We’ve had a lot of help, and I wouldn’t move anywhere else.” J. Briones Construction can be contacted at 350-1166.

Mahoneys make 1954 Worthington home their own By Jane Turpin Moore The Globe WORTHINGTON — Count on it: If Jim and Beth Mahoney ever cross the finish line on home improvement projects, they won’t celebrate with popcorn. “We’ve lived in the popcorn ceiling world and scraped more than enough ceilings,” said Beth. “We’re never going to touch another one.” But as avowed “project people,” there’s a 100% chance the creatively confident couple will tackle another home improvement task or two before they settle in to simply watch the sun set over Lake Okabena, which is directly across the street from their Lake Avenue home. “The sunsets are awesome, every night,” attested Beth. The Mahoneys first moved to Worthington from their hometown of Morris in 2008.
In the three-plus years they spent here then, they renovated the Dugdale Avenue house they had purchased, bringing it up to date and, yes, scraping away all evidence of popcorn finish from the ceilings. “We’ve upgraded and updated every house we’ve lived in,” said Beth. “And when you’re young and don’t have a lot of money, it makes sense that you’ll do most of it yourselves.” Jim was raised on a farm outside of Morris as one of seven siblings. His upbringing naturally provided plenty of hands-on educational opportunities to master skills that are useful in the remodeling game. “My four brothers and dad were handy, and one of my brothers was an electrician,” said Jim. “There were always projects to do on the farm — grain bins, or making a new closet for mom’s bedroom — and we pitched in and worked together.”
But job opportunities for the couple, who have two adult children and six grandchildren, led them to relocate to Prior Lake in 2012. “We bought a house there that had been foreclosed on and sat empty for seven years,” said Beth. “It needed a lot of TLC — and there was a mama skunk and her babies that took up residence under the front step.” Although ridding the house of the skunk family was an adventure in itself, the Mahoneys gradually made headway in creating a comfortable new living environment for themselves there. Still, with their son Patrick and his wife Jenalee in Worthington (their daughter Megan and her husband Nate live in Morris with grandchildren Flynn and Claire), the Mahoneys often were back in the area they had previously grown to love.
While visiting their family during the 2018 Worthington Windsurfing Regatta, a friend told Beth that her former job with Nobles County Community Services was open. “That was an interesting development, but I didn’t consider it very seriously right away,” said Beth. A few days later, however, their daughter-in-law Jenalee called to say the house next door to them on Lake Avenue was for sale. “I like to complain that ‘God never talks to me,’” joked Beth, “but right then I felt He was slapping me across the head. “It was definitely some sort of sign that we were supposed to come back.” Beth applied for and was rehired by Nobles County Community Services, and Jim took a position with Fulda Area Credit Union.

While the 1954 rambler they purchased was in excellent shape, had been well cared-for by its previous two owners and, along with its premium lake view, had “lots of positives,” the Mahoneys felt compelled to make it their own. The enterprising couple first repainted and refinished the upstairs (which, with two bedrooms and a full bathroom, makes the perfect retreat when their out-oftown daughter and her family visit) before advancing to the main floor. Stripping it down to the studs, the Mahoneys engaged local contractors (including Chad Jeffers Construction, cabinet maker Isaac Joens of Wilmont, BTU Heating and Cooling, tile/flooring specialist Bruce Stugelmeyer and electrician John Nordell), plus construction material supplier Lampert Lumber, to supplement their do-it-yourself capabilities in bringing their new vision of the home to life. “Essentially, we created a master bedroom/bath/closet suite on the

first floor so that as we age, we can continue living here easily,” said Beth. Added Jim, “Having everything on one level, and making it easy to enjoy our lake view, were important to us.” Continued Beth, “And we reconfigured the kitchen to make it work better for us.” That meant conferring with Joens to design a built-in buffet space that allows for entertaining options, and installing a chef-approved gas range. “I love cooking with gas, although figuring out a way to get a good vent in was one of our biggest challenges,” said Beth. “But I kept telling them, ‘I’ve got to have a hood.’” Nearly all of the fixtures and features were purchased locally, including flooring (they chose engineered hardwood for the kitchen/ dining area) and tile from Carpet Plus, appliances from Karl’s and paint (Soft Pelican is the preferred tone throughout the main floor) from Schwalbach Ace Hardware.

Spring into 2020 home design trends Brandpoint The year is already off to a stylish start, but there are plenty more trends that will be coming into focus in the coming months. Designers around the country are exploring a dynamic mix of patterns and unexpected colors, plus creative new approaches to flooring, accents and lighting. Here are the go-to trends making a splash in design studios and homes this spring.
Florals are blossoming
Just in time for spring, floral designs are bringing walls and furnishings to life. Floral wallpaper is coming back in a big way, turning rooms into virtual gardens. But not to worry — the latest designs are not your grandmother’s wallpaper. Intriguing, modern and sophisticated floral designs in vibrant color choices are available to suit any taste.
Biophilic design
Another great trend for spring combines people’s passions for naturally occurring aesthetics and nature, often brought to life through indoor gardens, small trees or “living walls.” These design statements allow plants and other aspects of nature to become a visual focus in any home. It is also inspired by natural materials like wood and stone, earth tones and natural colors, and organic shapes. These elements are showcased throughout the home, including in wooden architectural beams, stone-based accent pieces and naturally colored accent walls. Yesterday’s linear furniture designs are being replaced by softer, curvier shapes that mimic forms in nature.
Naturalistic flooring
Designers and homeowners alike are making a statement in flooring that combines intriguing design with a natural flair, such as geometrically patterned flooring created from naturally beautiful hardwood. “Patterned flooring is beginning to dominate today’s interior designs,” says Katie Allen, design and trend director at Lumber Liquidators Flooring. “It can be used in a wide variety of spaces to add texture and character to any room.” For example, it is easier than ever to create a warm, visually exciting look in almost any home with a chevron pattern using Bellawood Engineered Hardwood Flooring from Lumber Liquidators. Each patterned plank is arranged in a custom zigzag pattern, meaning homeowners won’t be wasting time installing individually angled boards. The handcrafted distressing of the wood also reveals the natural grain and rich brown hues, appealing to homeowners wanting a natural look.

Mix and match
Unusual juxtapositions of color are being matched by contrasting textures and materials. Architects and designers are getting creative with the interplay of materials such as marbles against woods, plus geometric patterns created by tiles used for accent walls or as a backsplash. Fiber art — like handcrafted rugs, throw pillows, blankets and wall hangings — is popular again,
Lighting is no longer just a way to illuminate your space, but a bold detail to add visual excitement to any room. Champagne gold lighting fixtures are one fun trend that really stands out, seen in every room from living and dining rooms to kitchens and baths. Some of this spring’s overall trends can easily be brought to life through lighting choices, from wicker or caned pendant lamps to rounder, more organically shaped lighting fixtures. Let your own personality and design sensibility shine through when decorating your living spaces, using these trends as inspiration. Color your world
Along with the emphasis on nature-based color palettes comes a shift away from the neutral tones that have become popular over the last couple of years. Jewel tones like deep blues, a variety of green hues and even subtle pinks are seeing a comeback for walls, rugs, cabinets and furnishings. Designers are often choosing strongly contrasting colors to make visually bold statements, like pink against blue, rich blue against a lighter green or any color paired with black or white.

Four outdoor tips that can save you thousands Brandpoint The sounds of birds chirping, longer daylight hours, and budding trees and flowers are early signs that warmer weather and spring are on the way. That means more time outside to enjoy nature, but it’s also a sign it might be time for a little spring cleaning. “Cold temperatures, snowfall and winter rains can have a big effect on houses and landscaping, so now’s the time to check for potential home repairs and maintenance,” said Christopher O’Rourke, Mercury Insurance vice president of property claims. “Spring cleaning isn’t just about getting rid of belongings you no longer want or need — it’s also a time to get your home in tip-top shape so you can enjoy it throughout the rest of the year.” Here are four tips O’Rourke recommends to welcome the new season and save some money down the road.
Clean your gutters. Gutters collect debris over time, especially when rain, snow and wind causes twigs, pine needles and leaves to settle on your roof and in your rain gutters. Accumulated debris can create blockages that direct water into the home or, in areas without much precipitation, can act as kindling in the event of a fire. Buildup also allows mildew and mold to develop, which can slowly decay a home’s exterior and roof. “Preventable damage like mold or mildew that develops and rots a home’s exterior isn’t covered by homeowners insurance,” said O’Rourke. “It’s important to routinely clean out gutters — even if you have gutter guards installed, they don’t completely protect against debris building up eventually.

OUTDOOR TIPS From Page 9
An hour or two spent cleaning or checking your gutters is time well spent compared to the alternative.” Trim branches and remove dangerous trees. Thunderstorm frequency picks up in summer months, and high winds can occur year round, so it’s best to get a jump on tree maintenance in early spring. Regularly trimming tree branches reduces their chance of breaking during a storm, which could cause power outages or property damage. “Properly trimmed branches present a lower risk of falling onto your home, power lines or possibly injuring someone on your property,” said O’Rourke. “Also, in areas that are prone to wildfires, trimmed trees create a buffer zone to help lower the chances of flames easily jumping onto your roof.” Consider having the trees on your property inspected by an arborist to determine their health and have diseased trees removed before they topple over unexpectedly. Removal costs vary depending on height and difficulty, but range from $100 to
around $1,800. These preventative costs are not covered by your homeowners policy, but can be a wise investment that saves you time, money and anxiety. Watch out for service lines. Homeowners who want to plant gardens, trees or install additional landscape features to enhance their outdoor living space should be aware of potential underground utility lines. Most service lines — a network of exterior, underground utility lines or pipes that supply a home with electricity, gas, water and sewer functions — are only buried a few inches beneath the ground. Accidentally hitting one when digging can result in loss of service, expensive repairs or a serious injury. If a break to a service line happens on a homeowner’s property, special machinery may be needed to excavate pipes from beneath the ground, which may require digging under your home, garden or driveway. The homeowner is responsible for repair or replacement costs, and this damage can be inconvenient, expensive and isn’t covered by a standard homeowners insurance policy.
“The average cost to repair a break to a service line is about $5,000 and most Americans wouldn’t welcome such a large surprise bill,” said O’Rourke. “Homeowners should definitely consider purchasing an endorsement to their insurance policy to protect against losses of this nature. Mercury offers this coverage as an addition to our home insurance policy and it costs as little as $8 a year, depending on the home’s age.” To be safe, homeowners should call 811 before digging so the utility companies can send a locator to mark the approximate locations of underground service lines. Service your air conditioning unit. Regular maintenance of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems is essential to ensure the equipment is in proper working order, which can save money on energy bills, as well as protect against expensive repair and replacement costs. “No one wants to unexpectedly find themselves living in a sauna during the dog days of summer, so the start of spring is a great time to have your air conditioner inspected,” said O’Rourke. “You

Your home will bring you security and joy for many years to come. Taking the time to maintain it is well worth the investment.

PLANNING A PROJECT? Did you know there are State building codes you must follow while doing a home improvement project to ensure safety for those living in the home as well as the safety of any future buyers of your property? Most projects require a building permit. Some examples of those projects are replacing shingles or siding, new decks, home additions or basement finishing, altering room walls or installing drywall, as well as placing storage sheds on your property. There are a few home improvement projects that do not require a building permit, examples of those would be painting or wallpapering and replacing floor coverings. During the planning phase is the best time to gather information on zoning and building code requirements! Call 507-372-8640 or stop by Community Development located in City Hall 303 Ninth Street to discuss whether or not a permit is needed for the work being completed as well as discuss the requirements that may apply to your project.

In addition, a small den toward the back of the house with a prized wood-burning fireplace (“Jim would burn a fire in it every night if I let him,” laughed Beth) is now bedecked with a new mantel (hand-crafted by Jim), a light-gray tile hearth laid cooperatively by Beth and Jim, and a white-paint refresh of the former red brick fireplace surround. “We watch a lot of HGTV shows, but mostly I buy and go with what I like,” said Beth. She credits her mother, Jeanne, who died at the end of March, with encouraging that attitude. “She always did that, and refinished every piece of furniture in our house, and it always looked beautiful,” Beth noted. Home improvements aside, the most fortuitous aspect of the Mahoneys’ August 2018 relocation to Worthington was the ability for them to be close to their son Patrick and his family, and lend their ready support, as they together experienced a year brimming with both love and loss.
The baby girl, Genevieve, who daughter-in-law Jenalee was expecting at the time the Mahoneys returned to town, was born in October 2018 and unfortunately died a short eight months later due to complications from RSV. “This is exactly where we are supposed to be,” said Beth. “We thank Genevieve every day for bringing us back to Worthington, and I know God will never have to speak as loud again for me to listen to Him.” While the Mahoneys are now enjoying the changes they’ve already made in their new home, they particularly relish time spent with neighboring grandchildren Natzali, Giani and Stella — and when daughter Megan brings her family for visits, hearts and home are even fuller. But don’t get the idea these “project people” are done quite yet. “We’re moving outside,” said Beth, with Jim mentioning patio improvements, a deck, paint and a list of other ideas they plan to implement. “When we were first married, we watched ‘This Old House’ with Bob Vila,” warned Jim jokingly. Added Beth, “Four houses later, we’re here to stay.”
