Leading the way Minnesota FFA president, vice president share experiences of oce By Julie Buntjer jbuntjer@dglobe.com REGIONAL — The last time the Worthington FFA Chapter boasted a state FFA officer was 25 years ago, and for the nearby Windom FFA Chapter, advisor Darcy Dahna said it’s been even longer. Today, the two southwest Minnesota schools are home to 2016-17 Minnesota FFA President Spencer Wolter of Windom and Vice-President Katie Rogers of Worthington. The teens were slated for the state’s top two leadership positions during the Minnesota FFA Convention last April in St. Paul, and will relinquish their titles at the 2017 state convention in a couple of months. It has been a busy year thus far for the two college freshmen — one filled with activities and opportunities for them to both teach and learn. “I’ve truly learned what FFA is,” Wolter said last week from the University of Minnesota St. Paul campus, where he is studying animal science and agronomy. “I know it’s almost an odd point for someone who is now a state officer, but I did a lot of CDEs, I did proficiencies — I did a lot with FFA.

“As a state officer, I’ve been able to see such a broader perspective of what it truly has to offer everyone,” he added. “It has been awesome and eye-opening to see what an influence FFA has on everyone. I didn’t realize the reach of that potential until I was a state officer.” After the state convention wrapped up last spring, Wolter, Rogers and their fellow officer team members immediately went to work planning six weeks of summer leadership camps for FFA members in grades 9-12. For Wolter, who had never attended an FFA camp while a member of the Windom FFA Chapter, working with teens across the state has been the highlight of his year thus far. The camps, offered in June and July, ranged from three to five days in length, with the state officers planning all of the activities. “It was a big commitment, but the reward was awesome,” Wolter said. “You could see the excitement in their eyes. Anytime they’d start talking about what they wanted to do when they got back to (their local chapter), it just made my heart swell —

I just got goosebumps and excitement to see how enthusiastic these members were from the impact of the six state FFA officers and the FFA organization at those camps.” As the summer drew to a close and classes started up last fall, the state officer team focused its efforts on chapter visits, traveling across the state to meet with FFA members in their home chapters. In October, Wolter and Rogers, along with their fellow state FFA officers, served as delegates along with two other Minnesota FFA members, at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis. The experience resonated with Rogers — particularly hearing the retiring addresses of each of the national FFA officers. “I’d actually never gotten to see a retiring national officer’s address and I got to see all six of them this year — that was a really neat experience,” she said. “It was fun to hear them.” Rogers, who is attending South Dakota State University and studying agriculture education, said she loved being a part of the delegate

With the state officer team energized from the national convention, it returned home to Minnesota and began planning the 2017 Minnesota FFA Convention — choosing the convention theme, planning speakers and now, writing retiring addresses. The 2017 Minnesota FFA Convention theme is “All In: Our Legacy

Starts Now.” It’s one both Wolter and Rogers are excited about. “As a team, we decided to choose a theme that exhibits what we want members and what we want ourselves to do each and every day — to give everything that we have to create that legacy that impacts others,” Rogers said. “We don’t want our members to just live our theme for the three days (of state convention),” added Wolter. “I really believe all in is to be committed — you need to be all in something. I feel like you need to be all in, all the time and then it is what you make it.” Getting FFA members “all in” for the state convention, he said, will include promotion through social media and outreach, letters and talking to members at region FFA events. “I want members to

Locally grown, locally fed H-LO FFA Chapter to develop school garden By Julie Buntjer jbuntjer@dglobe.com OKABENA — With increased interest in locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables, the Heron Lake-Okabena FFA Chapter is taking on a grow-your-own project with the creation of a school garden in Okabena. The concept isn’t new in this small Jackson County town. In 2009, the school established a community garden, selling shares and encouraging local residents to plant their own

food plot. After several years and some changes in the high school’s agriculture department that spearheaded the project, the community garden died out. Now, with Loretta Halbur just into her second year as the school’s only agriculture instructor and FFA advisor, the local garden idea is being nurtured and brought back to life. “There was always the mindset to have a garden — an outdoor lab — to grow our own food,” Halbur said of the plans

She was approached by the high school’s head cook last spring about growing fruits and vegetables that could be featured on the lunch menu at the HL-O school. Just months into her teach-

ing career at the school, however, Halbur needed more time to develop a plan. As she laid the groundwork, Halbur’s first step was to secure a grant from the Minnesota Department of

Edgerton High School forms FFA Chapter semester and second semester, I’ve seen increases in the number of students who are taking ag classes,” Thompson said. “Number-wise, it’s going in the right direction. Parents are saying their son or daughter wants to be in FFA next year. “It’s a slow growing process — they have to understand what FFA is about,” he added. “Until they get involved, they may not know.” In this initial year — and with time needed to get the chapter chartered — Thompson opted to develop a leadership team rather than try to have an election of officers. With the six-member team, each member gets to experience being the chapter president at a meeting. “We had six kids apply to be an officer and we went with those six,” he shared. “We hold chapter meetings monthly.” They have incorporated fun activities into the meetings, such as going bowling and playing Norske softball. They

Since this is the inaugural year for the chapter and there were no start-up funds other than some money the district designated for it, dues were charged to join the FFA. That money was used to pay for their state and national dues, with the rest kickstarting the fund balance. “We had an area farmer offer us a 10.5acre school farm that he is renting to us for $1 a year,” Thompson said. “We’re working to build our fundraising efforts that way.” By growing crops on the plot, Thompson said it will not only be a fundraiser, but also an

Thompson’s first task was to develop his course offerings with input from the high school’s principal and counselor. It was shared with a few incoming seniors, and all agreed his mix of courses was a good start for the first year. “I worked all summer long just trying to take a program that was basically a part-time industrial tech/woodworking program and turning it into an agriculture program,” Thompson said. The courses, offered under the agriculture umbrella, include ag business and marketing, leadership, farm and residential wiring, welding and fabrication, small engines, ag structures, animal science and general agriculture. So far, 30 of the students who have enrolled in agriculture classes at the high school have also joined the Edgerton FFA Chapter. As he is able to reach more students and parents, Thompson said the program will continue to grow. “Just between first 001541882r1

It seems rather surprising then that until last fall, the local public high school didn’t offer an agricultural curriculum. Nathan Thompson is changing that. The agriculture instructor and FFA advisor has 27 years experience in Minnesota classrooms, having taught in Herman-Norcross from 1990-1992, and then at Hayfield for 24 years. He was hired by the Edgerton Public School District last May. “To my knowledge, they have never had an ag program here,” Thompson said. “The school district had noticed this was a piece of curriculum that was missing out of the district. Parents and students that had graduated had voiced the opinion that we should have one.”

FFA GARDEN From Page C5

Education to fund an agriculture summer education position to cover her salary. With that grant secured last fall, Halbur can spend her summer supervising FFA members and any other students interested in working in the garden. The Department of Education grant was the first of several that Halbur pursued to make the school garden a reality. The FFA chapter was also awarded a Perkins grant to purchase three new greenhouse benches for facility that sits just outside the back door of the agriculture classroom at the Okabena school. Agriculture students have already built a new shelving unit inside the greenhouse to gear up for the arrival of seeds and other supplies necessary to begin growing fruit and vegetable

EDGERTON From Page C6

Thus far, the horse CDE team has earned a trip to compete at the Minnesota FFA Convention this spring after taking first place in the region contest.

Daily Globe plants next month. “Our greenhouse is kind of undergoing a little bit of a makeover,” Halbur said of the nearly 25-year-old hooproofed building. “It hasn’t been heavily used in the last few years.” Halbur then applied for a grant through the HL-O Community Foundation, which, if awarded, will be used to purchase seed, as well as equipment such as hoes, buckets and a new wheelbarrow. The chapter still has the tiller it purchased when there was a community garden, which can be pulled behind a four-wheeler to work up the soil. “The (Horticulture II) class can fix it up and work the ground,” Halbur said. Eventually, Halbur said she’d like to seek a larger grant to either repair or replace the existing greenhouse. “There are a lot of grants available,” she said. “I’m able to look at the community garden program and how they

were able to get their funding.”

“We have quite a few events coming up in March or April,” Thompson said, adding that he hopes more teams will qualify for the state contests. “Most of the team members have been seventh- through ninth-graders. I’m excited with the younger kids — we’re building

for the future.” During National FFA Week this week, the Edgerton FFA is planning several activities to educate classmates about the organization. Each day it will conduct mini CDE contests during lunch — including an FFA knowledge contest, one on small

Focus on fresh Halbur said the primary goal with the oneacre school garden plot is to provide students with locally grown, fresh produce through the school lunch program. “It starts small,” Halbur said, noting that for the first year, the chapter plans to grow potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots and watermelon. They may also try lettuce and radishes. “At the high school, half to two-thirds of our lunch line is fresh vegetables and fruits,” she said. “If we have it locally grown, kids will take more investment in the foods they eat.” The produce harvested during the summer months will be used for the summer school program, with excess sold at a local farmer’s market or donated to the food shelf in Heron Lake. With Heron Lake los-

ing its only grocery store in recent years, Halbur said it’s important to give people a local source for fresh produce. Those who can’t afford to drive to a larger community’s grocery store for fresh fruits and vegetables would at least have a source for part of the year. “I think having something locally grown or locally sourced would be awesome,” she added. “If we can provide some of that fresh produce at the food shelf, I think that would be a huge benefit.”

Learning by doing Just as the FFA motto reads, “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve,” Halbur said the school garden will provide not only FFA members, but others in the community, an opportunity to learn about agriculture and helping others. She will incorporate the project into lesson plans on growing food, safe food handling animals and others on horse and small engines. “On Friday we will be doing Ag Olympics during the last hour of the day,” Thompson said. The event will include frozen turkey bowling, a pie eating contest, bale toss and an obstacle course.

and produce packaging, among other ideas. “Horticulture Design may do some garden design and companion planting ideas,” Halbur said. “Hort II will focus on growing, and ag leadership will focus on marketing.” As of now, there are no plans to hire students to work in the garden this summer — she’s hoping there will be enough FFA members and students willing to volunteer their time. “Hopefully as time goes on we can add in student employment,” she said, adding that it could turn into a viable Supervised Agriculture Experience for two to three students eventually. The HL-O FFA Chapter boasts 45 members, and Halbur said some — considering a career in elementary education — will get to lead lessons and tours of the garden plot during summer school. Already, the excitement is building among the students —

and for Halbur as well. “I was involved in the old community garden,” she said. “I saw the potential it had. With the rise of locally grown food in the last five to 10 years, this is even more important now.” 001542388r1

be all in — to come to state convention, to practice their SAEs, to compete for their CDEs, to meet other members,” Wolter said. “I want them to be in full blue jacket — they want to be there for state convention — not just for competition, but for the whole experience.” Going “all in” with the FFA is something Wolter and Rogers have certainly experienced thus far in their roles as state officers. In January, they were among five members of the state FFA officer team and one past officer to take part in

an international agricultural study tour to South Africa. “Each year they take 75 state officers from across the U.S. to go on an international group trip,” shared Rogers. The trip offered participants a global perspective on agriculture, as well as an opportunity to be culturally aware as professionals in the agriculture industry. During the nearly two-week trip, the contingent visited crocodile and ostrich farms, as well as a beef feedlot, goat farm and other traditional agricultural operations. They visited major cities from Johannesburg to Pretoria and Cape Town, as well as small villages. “My favorite part was

visiting a traditional African village, Kayamundi,” Rogers said. “Here we got to actually interact with the people that live in the village. We had a walking tour of where they live and ... learn about their life in South Africa.” The trip was funded in part by the Minnesota FFA Foundation and the FFA officers who participated. They were also encouraged to seek sponsorships from their local business community. Rogers received financial support from New Vision Co-op, Nobles County Farm Bureau, the Worthington Agriculture Advisory Council and United Prairie Bank. It was her first overseas trip. “It was super-re-

warding and eye-opening just to see another culture,” she said. “It was really cool — I loved it.” Wolter said he was most impressed by the similarities and differences between American agriculture and that of South Africa. “They’re more resourceful,” he said, noting how chickens who don’t survive the trip to the processing plant are transported to farms where they are fed to the crocodiles. “They are recycling their water and feed,” he shared. “All of their byproducts from wheat and barley are fed to cattle — it’s a commodity they have access to.” With two busy months

ahead of them to prepare for the Minnesota FFA Convention, Rogers and Wolter said they have enjoyed their state officer experience thus far. “Something I’ve enjoyed the most is just getting to meet all of the members across Minnesota as well as just getting to work with industry professionals and learning more about

agriculture,” Rogers said. “Coming into office you always want to impact others, but it’s amazing the impact that others have on you while you’re serving.” Once their roles as state FFA officers come to an end, Wolter said he plans to take the next step in the FFA organization and try for a national office this fall.
