Forever home Neugebauers add space, style to existing house By Jane Turpin Moore Daily Globe BIGELOW — If, as Dorothy Gale famously asserted, “There’s no place like home,” then Dusty and Tiffany Neugebauer are in exactly the right spot. The young couple, married since 2009 and blessed with two children (son Dyson, 5, and daughter Kinsley, 4), had lived during the early years of their marriage about four miles southeast of Worthington. But Dusty, an owner of 266 Ag Service, longed to go “home” to his family’s farmland in rural Bigelow, so when the opportunity arose for the Neugebauers to purchase the property, they quickly pursued it. “It was Dusty’s dream to live on his home place,” confirmed Tiffany, a sixth-grade teacher at Worthington Middle School. “So we bought it from his grandpa.” With a goal of making the existing 1972 rambler their home for life, however, the couple immediately created a plan for adding to and remodeling the structure. “It originally had three small bedrooms and an unfinished basement,” explained Tiffany. “We wanted to get the house the way we’d like it to be from the get-go, partly because we didn’t want to wait to make improvements until after our kids were gone.

FOREVER HOME From Page S3

“We’d like to be able to have their birthday parties at our house, and have it be a place where they can easily host their friends.” The Neugebauers, who are both 2000 Worthington High School graduates, hadn’t counted on their rural Worthington home selling quite as fast as it did, so coinciding with the start of construction efforts on their “new” home in March 2016 came the need for them to temporarily relocate. “We spent seven months living in Dusty’s mom’s basement,” laughed Tiffany. “But it was over the summer, so it didn’t seem quite that long.” The project involved gutting the house’s interior and doubling the square footage, with the addition of two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a family room on the main floor. A full basement that still awaits finishing (it’s been sheet rocked but awaits painting and flooring) was also included; it will eventually contain two bedrooms that the couple expects to fill with visiting friends and relatives. The old basement is now being used for storage. “We moved everything around inside,” explained Tiffany. “For instance, the old living room is now the dining room, and we created a ‘window’ from the kitchen into the living room.”

Now, the Neugebauers have three main-floor bedrooms and a half-bath/powder room. A master bath is adjacent to the master bedroom, while the children share a Jack-and-Jill bathroom (painted a vibrant lime green). A toy room may later function as an office/study area, but for now Neugebauer says it’s a great place for the kids’ many playthings. The home’s main living spaces are tastefully decorated in calming and sophisticated shades of light gray and brown. Kitchen cabinets are made of dark rustic cherry wood, while the doors and wood trim are composed of dark knotty alder, Tiffany reported. Laminate made the cut for countertops and flooring in the kitchen and dining room. One of Tiffany’s favorite custom features? The distinctive wooden pillars that frame the dining area (which is punctuated with a lone black wall) and informally separate it from the kitchen. “I wanted pillars somewhere — they were a must-have, and we found a place for them,” confirmed Tiffany. The Neugebauers selected gray leather furniture for the living room, which pops with red accessories. Brighter colors grace the children’s bedrooms and reflect their personalities and preferences. “Dyson’s room is ‘John Deere green,’ and Kinsley has a light lavender with Princess Ariel accents,” noted Tiffany. Local contractors, vendors and service providers were largely responsible for the successful outcome. A short list includes Todd Rogers of Reading

as contractor; Al Madison of Lamperts (“All of our materials were from there,” said Tiffany); cabinets by Isaac Joens Woodworking; Brewster Heating & Cooling; furniture and flooring from Rune’s; Russell Tiling LLC of Bigelow for digging/excavating; paint from Diamond Vogel; and electrical work by Duane Burkard of Wilmont. “It was a very big job, but we don’t plan to move, ever,” proclaimed Tiffany, adding that they were able to move into their “new” home on Nov. 7, 2016. Currently, the young family enjoys outdoor activities (like boating on Lake Okabena), and the Neugebauer children delight in riding their bikes up and down the driveway. “They love it here,” said Tiffany of the couple’s kids and their easy adaptation to their dad’s home place. “They didn’t think we lived on a real ‘farm’ before. “They’re proud to live on a farm, even though we don’t have animals here — but there are tractors and combines. “I guess if one of the kids decides to farm when they’re older, we may have to move,” Tiffany concluded. “Otherwise, this is where we’re staying.”

“It was a very

big job, but we don’t plan to move, ever.”

People would come in and ask for advice, show me pictures. I would help my friends and by word of mouth it blossomed into more. Now, if someone comes in and wants my advice, we can make an appointment and sit down and talk more formally. “I’ve always enjoyed decorating,” Vander Meulen disclosed. “I’ve torn out walls and floors because I wanted a change. My whole family is that way. If we want something done around the house we just do it ourselves. I guess we have a knack for it. We’ve been born with it; we’re all very artistic.” Vander Meulen is willing to go in whatever direction a client wants regarding style and will do as much or as little as the client requires. “I will give ideas to get you going,” she explained. “It can be as simple as just giving some thoughts on an upgrade for your home, or it can be as in-depth as picking out millwork. I can run to a store to take pictures to give you ideas, or grab samples. I can do the shopping for you or simply suggest things you can purchase. I will work with the client to do whatever they’d like.” Whether its flooring advice — why or why not to purchase this or that type of floor — or presenting paint options or faucet ideas or the location of a wall outlet, Vander Meulen has wisdom on it all that she is willing to share. Sometimes her consults are as simple as advice on furniture or bedding and sometimes they’re far greater. “The big thing is to make sure it’s their style,” Vander Meulen shared. “Working with what they have and what they like. Finding their style. People don’t always know what they like. I will show them pictures and we can decide if they’re very traditional or with a contemporary mix or if they have heirloom pieces they want to fit in, we’ll make that work. “I work with them,” Vander Meulen assured. “A lot of time it’s about tweaking what they have and maybe adding one item to tie it all together. Or I’m open to formally designing their whole home or their cabin.” Some questions Vander Meulen might ask a client include things as simple as, “Are you a couch sitter or a chair sitter?” Or, “Do you like subtle

First in flowers … and more VIP Floral & Garden Center offers growing array of merchandise By Ryan McGaughey rmcgaughey@dglobe.com SLAYTON — Since 2002, Stan Van Iperen and his business partner, Ivan Vogel, have been in the floral and garden center business. Their enterprise has continued to grow over the years, and the duo for the last three years has operated VIP Floral & Garden Center at a location along Minnesota 30. “We actually started out as a landscape contractor (in 1996) and then brought in the floral and garden center part of it,” Van Iperen remembered. “We now grow all our own bedding plants and have over an acre of greenhouse space where we grow all our own product. Locally grown is really important to a lot of people right now.” VIP has both a store location and greenhouse along Minnesota 30 as well as a growing range

located at the edge of Slayton. “VIP Floral used to be Slayton Floral and has been in business since 1942,” Van Iperen said, adding that the previous owner, Clint Rohrer, now owns Green Garden Place in Worthington and was a great to help him and Vogel in teaching them more about the floral and greenhouse trade. “We changed the name to VIP Floral some years ago. … When we bought it, it was a smaller momand-pop type flower shop, but we’ve added more staff and expanded what we offer,” he continued. “We offer more gift items and have expanded our garden decor. There had never been trees, bushes and perennials before, and we’ve added those to the mix.”

Van Iperen added that customers frequently approach VIP employees with multiple questions on growing flowers and vegetables. His staff is eager to help. “In the last few years, there has been a real movement toward growing your own food and knowing where all your vegetables come from,” he said. “A lot of people come in not exactly knowing how to garden, or wondering what the newest trends in gardening are. Our staff helps them pick plants that will work for our area, and plants that other customers have had success with.” VIP offers both fresh-cut flowers and floral arrangements and also offers its services for weddings, funerals and any other special occasion. It also sells flowers for outdoor container gardening and hanging baskets. Many in Worthington are likely familiar with VIP’s floral baskets, though they may not actually realize it. “We actually grow all the flower baskets that hang in downtown Worthington right here,” Van Iperen said. “We supply them right from Slayton to Worthington, and we’ve been doing that for a long time. I’ve provided flowers for other cities, but they don’t always have the care that Worthington does. I’ve got to give a lot of credit to Scott (Rosenberg) and his department for the job they do taking care of those flowers. If they didn’t do that, they would not look like that.” Van Iperen said VIP has a staff of talented designers who offer unique floral pieces to the customers. Once the garden center opens for the season, the business will employ between 20-25 people, although plenty of workers are able to stick around throughout the season. That’s in large part because VIP has become far more than simply a place to get flowers and plants for the garden. “We also rent tuxedos for proms and weddings,” Van Iperen noted. “There used to be a clothing store uptown, but they quit, and the company that worked with them approached us. People like that service.

By Ryan McGaughey rmcgaughey@dglobe.com LAKEFIELD — Business is booming for Chad Frericks. Frericks started his own business, JNC Electric, in June 2015, and his clientele has continued to grow. In November, he purchased a building on Minnesota 86 in Lakefield and rents out a portion to one business while also housing JNC there. He also hopes to be hiring additional help in the not-so-distant future. Frericks originally grew up in the Heron Lake-Okabena-Lakefield area. His sister resides in Lakefield, his mom lives in Heron Lake and he was raised on Okabena. He graduated from what was then known as Southwest Star Concept High School in 2002. After attending Ridgewater College in Willmar for electronics, Frericks worked in New Ulm and Sioux Falls, S.D., for three years before returning to his native area to start his electrical career. He worked for what was then Post and Hohenstein in Lakefield doing electric work, and after one year joined IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) 343. “That’s where I did my apprenticeship training,” Frerichs explained. “I was there for about five years, and did classroom work and had a lot of on-the-job training. I was living in Mankato at the time and traveling to Rochester for the classroom training. With the union, it was nice because I got a lot of experience on bigger jobs, like hospitals and larger municipal projects.” After wrapping up his apprenticeship. Frericks was hired as a full-time electrician at the Minnesota Soybean Processors plant in Brewster. “That taught me a lot of industrial skills, like motor control and motor-intense troubleshooting,” he said. “Then, in the spring of 2015, quit Ryan McGaughey / Daily Globe there and went full-time with my business. Chad Frericks poses in front “It had always been a dream of mine, but it was of the JNC Electric business definitely hard to pull the trigger and quit a fulltime job with benefits to start something with location along Minnesota 86 in nothing guaranteed. But I haven’t really experiLakefield. enced any slow times, and it just keeps on getting busier and busier. I’m almost to the point now where I have to start hiring people.” Frericks currently has one full-time employee other than himself, as well as a pair of part-timers he utilizes on as-needed basis. He’s “definitely looking at hiring a journeyman this spring,” he said, as work is expected to become even busier than now. “The license is a big kicker … it’s getting harder and harder to find licensed guys,” he said. “There are probably only a handful of guys within 20 miles of here.” The “JNC” in the name of Frericks’ business stands for “Jackson Nobles Cottonwood,” and 90 percent of his work is done between Jackson, Windom and Worthington. He’s now taking on a variety of projects. “When I started off, most of my work was residential,” he said, “but now I’ve been doing more commercial work. There’s agriculture, too — I’ve got grain projects coming up this week.” Frericks believe it’s important to take on as wide a variety of jobs as he can to continue to generate strong word of mouth for his business. “I want to hire guys because I don’t want to turn down work and lose some of the smaller jobs,” he said. “Smaller jobs are the ones that are hard to get done, like when homeowner calls and say the need a light changed or something and you’re busy. But from when I started, word of mouth and customer interaction is the thing I’ve noticed most. One job kind of leads to another, and I’ve seen the importance of that.” While Frericks already knew much about electrical work when starting JNB Electric, he’s gotten a substantial education in one other area. “I’ve learned a lot in the last two years about being a business owner,” he said “Before, I was 95 percent electrician and 5 percent businessman. Now, with the business and that getting busier, the business side has become a lot more to handle, and I’m learning a lot on that side of things. “From first quitting my job and starting the business, and then all the milestones that come with keep getting busier and busier, things so far have worked out well. I’m just going keep pushing the limit.”

Five tips to create an affordable and rewarding home DIY project

that could easily be turned into a couple cans of paint or tools for your next project. So collect your coins and bring them to your nearest Coinstar kiosk to put your newfound money toward that DIY project. ► Make it a family affair. Turn your DIY project into lasting memories by including your children in the work. Assign them tasks you know they can accomplish. Ask younger kids to sort supplies or carry lightweight materials, while older children can be tasked with painting large spaces or performing simple hammering tasks. Work closely with your kids and celebrate their victories at the project’s end. You’ll find that your little helpers may even be eager to sign up for your next DIY undertaking. ► Take pics to record your accomplishment. Your DIY project will spawn many memories, so take pictures to capture them all. Before-and-after pictures can be a fun way to see how your project improved your home, and while you’re at it, why not brag a little by posting photos of your accomplishments online. And don’t forget to take pictures throughout the process as well. Your entire family will enjoy looking back at the progression years down the road. Brandpoint When it comes to home improvement, DIY is more popular than ever. There’s just something satisfying about improving your home with your own two hands and being able to enjoy the fruits of your labor, day after day. However, home improvement projects can be expensive, and many people shy away from tackling home improvements they know they would enjoy because of their skill level or the fear of high costs. This doesn’t have to be the case. While some projects — like a complete bathroom remodel — are going to be expensive, other DIY projects can be tackled in an economical and enjoyable way. These projects may include repainting a room, installing a new ceiling fan or replacing old, damaged baseboards. The limit is your imagination, so look around your house to see what home improvements could enhance your home and then apply these tips for an affordable and rewarding experience. ► Find your motivation. The most rewarding DIY projects are those that satisfy a real need in your home and those you’ll use or see every day. Whether it’s to spruce up a room’s appearance, enhance its usability, repair existing damage or another project that may increase your home’s resale value, select one that will be meaningful. Find out where your motivations lie and choose a project that satisfies the goal. You’ll put more effort into the project and be happier with the result. ► Know your limits. The “do” in “do it yourself” varies tremendously based on who you are and the skills you possess. If you’re a licensed contractor, your ability to “do” is probably quite high. But for most people, focus on projects you know you can handle. If you’re unsure, surf the web for a how-to video on your chosen project and watch it closely to see if it matches your capabilities. Seven reasons why millennials love gardening (and you should, too) Brandpoint The stereotype: Millennials spend more time interacting with the digital world than the natural world around them. The reality: Five million of the 6 million people who took up gardening in 2015 were millennials, according to the 2016 National Gardening Survey.

More millennials (people between the ages of 21 and 34) than any other age group are falling in love with gardening. As a hobby, gardening is a great fit for the millennial mindset and lifestyle that emphasize individuality, independence and value. However, the advantages of gardening that attract millennials are also relevant to every age group, and anyone who wants to begin growing a nutritious, healthful food garden. Here are seven reasons why more millennials than ever are taking up food gardening, and why you should, too: 1. Gardening fosters better nutrition. Millennials care about good nutrition and knowing where their food comes from. Multiple studies show members of the generation are

health conscious, and understand the relationship between the food they eat, good nutrition and good health. Millennials know fresh vegetables deliver great nutrition, and millennial gardeners know that growing their own veggies and herbs also means they can put more nutritious food on the table. With transplant purveyors like Bonnie Plants offering more than 250 varieties of popular, heirloom, hybrid, new and tried-and- true vegetables and herbs, it’s easy to grow a garden full of healthy, nutritious, economical veggies and herbs. 2. You can save money in the grocery store. Millennials are into saving money. Eighty percent have a budget, 72 percent are saving for retirement and 51 percent have an emergency fund, according to a TD Ameritrade survey. Gardening can allow you to spend less in the grocery store produce aisle — and that kind of saving savvy appeals to millennials as well as any other age group! 3. Gardening is good for the environment. Awareness of environmental issues and a desire for healthful products that contribute to ecological balance are hallmarks of the millennial generation.

MILLENNIALS From Page S14

A Nielsen study found millennials care about environmental issues and find ways to personally support a healthy environment. When you grow your own vegetables and herbs, “food miles,” the distance a food item is transported from producer to consumer, shrinks substantially and includes only the distance from your kitchen to your own backyard. Choose plants in biodegradable containers, like those from Bonnie Plants, and gardening is even more environmentally friendly. 4. You can grow a garden anywhere. While many millennials are city dwellers, others live in suburbs. The fact that they can garden anywhere — on a city balcony, urban patio or suburban backyard — makes gardening the perfect hobby for them. Using transplants from Bonnie Plants, all gardeners can create a backyard garden plot, a vertical garden in an alleyway between city buildings, or a container garden on a balcony or deck. 5. The garden is a great place to come together as a family. It’s true that millennials make the most use of digital devices of any generation; they also value deep family relationships. Planting a garden with their children, significant others or friends allows everyone to spend enriching time together, working toward an enjoyable, shared goal. 6. Gardening can be a challenge anyone can achieve. Working toward a goal, and having a vision, are very important qualities for millennials. Gardening takes time and effort but with the right resources and information, it’s something virtually anyone can succeed at. Millennials turn to online resources, like Bonnie Plants’ vegetable and herb growing guides, gardening how-to’s, videos and recipes to help them achieve and ensure success. 7. Gardening can be an adventure. Sixty-four percent of millennials say they love to cook, and 75 percent enjoy eating cuisine from other cultures, according to a survey by Barkley. For a generation of adventurous eaters and cooks, gardening can be an opportunity to grow and try new things, from edible flowers and exotic herbs, to new types of vegetables, all the while saving money by growing their own. With millennials now dominating the workforce, and many starting families and reaching their peak earning years, it’s likely their interest in gardening will continue to grow.

Brandpoint For most of us, the idea of spring cleaning probably sounds refreshing after a winter of bundling up against the cold. Now that spring has arrived, it’s finally time to get started! Sprucing up your home doesn’t have to take lots of time, and is a great way to leave you feeling reinvigorated after a long winter. To help you spring into warm weather home improvement, here are 24 simple projects that take 24 hours or less to accomplish: Put a fresh coat of paint on the front door. Standard paints can take a long time to dry, especially if you live in a humid climate. SnapDry(R) from Sherwin-Williams(R) dries in as little as one hour, and you’ll be able to close the door without it sticking. The paint can be used inside or outside the home and it resists dirt, fingerprints, UV rays and weathering. Update kitchen cabinets. Recently, homeowners are changing the facades of their kitchen cabinets and painting them instead of staining them-a

trend that has grown tremendously. Add new knobs to complete the look for an easy, inexpensive way to give your cabinets a facelift. Swap pillows and throws. You can’t change your couch every time the season changes, but switching out pillows and throws is a great way to give seasonal flare to your living room decor. Create a statement wall. Installing graphic wallpaper or wood planking on one wall, or simply painting one wall or the ceiling a contrasting color, can add drama to any room in the house. Spruce up the deck for summer enjoyment. A refinished deck looks great, and doesn’t have to be a lot of work. SuperDeck(R) from Sherwin-Williams goes on fast and easy, and protects the integrity of your wood deck. It can even reduce the surface temperature of the wood, making the deck barefoot-friendly on a hot summer day. Add wow factor to your entryway. Large planters with hardy, bright blooms add curb appeal when positioned on either side of the front door.

Update your lighting. Modern light fixtures in kitchens and bathrooms shed a whole new light and look on the room. Consider installing a dimmer so you can create the right mood, any time of the day. While you’re upgrading lighting, be sure to replace old-style incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient ones that will last longer and cost less to operate. Create a gallery wall. Hang multiple family photos and/or chic prints in varying frame styles and sizes on one wall of the living room. Rearrange your furniture. Talk about a no-cost way to get a totally different look. Experiment with different furniture configurations, and don’t be afraid to move pieces from room to room. Create a recharging drawer in your kitchen. Clean out that junk drawer, add dividers and a power strip and you have the perfect place for recharging your family’s electronic devices. Install a ceiling fan. Nothing says spring and summer like a ceiling fan wafting gentle breeze through a room. Choose the style and size that’s right for your space. Bonus: ceiling fans can help reduce energy bills by cheaply supplementing air-conditioning and heating. Organize your mudroom. Whether it’s a formal mudroom or a corner of the entryway, every house has a spot where shoes, backpacks and other personal items collect. Organize that area with hooks for hanging and cubbies or shoe racks for storage. Add a display shelf above a doorway. A wooden shelf above a doorway is a great place to feature collectibles. Add vintage class to a powder room. Replace the ordinary doorknob on your powder room door with a vintage or replica glass knob. Install decorative house numbers. You can purchase decorative tile or glass numerals from a variety of sources. Stencil some fun. Add animal or character stencils to the walls of a child’s room, staircase or kitchen, or patio table for a quick, artsy take. Add a ceiling medallion. Draw attention to a light fixture by installing a decorative ceiling medallion that has a slightly different color than the ceiling. Replace a kitchen faucet. A new kitchen faucet can be practical and decorative, but can also control water flow, saving money. Pressure wash siding and walkways. Power washing exterior home areas makes siding and walkways look fresh. Hang a new mirror in the bathroom. A decorative framed mirror in place of a standard bathroom mirror adds interest, elegance and even light to the space. Put a decorative decal in the laundry room. Create some fun in the laundry area by adding a decal with a humorous saying, such as “Life is too short to fold fitted sheets!” Upgrade bathroom towel storage. Replace those builder-issue towel bars and rings with decorative options that add pizzazz. Make your own art with a shower curtain. Love large-scale artwork but have a smaller scale budget? Use wood to frame a decorative shower curtain and turn it into wall art. Wash windows! What’s the one spring DIY task that will make all the others in your home look even better? Wash windows to allow spring and summer sunlight into your home. Trying just a few of these easy home-improvement tasks is a fast way to perk up your home for spring

Shade-tolerant plants help to complete landscapes

Metro Creative Graphics Plants need sunlight to thrive and grow, but some need less sunlight than others. People who find their landscapes are less supportive to sun-loving plants can choose from a variety of shade-tolerant plants, shrubs and trees. Shade tolerance refers to a plant’s ability to withstand low levels of light. Certain plants have adapted this feature to survive in the wild. Plants that grow at the base of forest floors, for example, will get less sunlight than others outside of the tree canopy. Such adaptations enable a wide variety of foliage to grow even though they are not exposed to much sunlight. While sun-loving plants often have broad leaves and expend significant energy to capture sunlight for photosynthesis, shade-tolerant plants expend less energy and tend to be more efficient consumers of soil nutrients and sunlight. Metro Creative Graphics Penn State Extension’s Plant and Pests division Shade-tolerant plants, such as coleus, can add says the amount of shade a plant is growing under color and appeal to shady areas of a landscape. will directly affect the density of the foliage and the plant’s flowering and fruiting characteristics. Blending shade-tolerant plants into the landscape can be an effective use of space. Before choosing plants for an existing landscape, it’s important to assess the level of shade or sun the plants will receive.

There are some home improvement projects that are best done before move-in, including any roof repairs or re-roofing. This home was re-roofed with TAMKO Heritage laminated shingles.

Brandpoint You found the perfect home, so it’s not surprising that you want to move in as quickly as possible. However, there are some projects that are best done when the house is still empty. So, consider completing the following seven items before the moving trucks arrive. ► Painting. A fresh coat of paint can instantly update a room, and it’s common to buy a home knowing you will need to paint several rooms or the entire house after the sale. However, painting is best done while every wall is accessible and there are no worries about getting paint on furniture or rugs. ► Changing locks. Now is the time to change the locks on your new home to eliminate the risk of any former keyholders accessing your new space.

► Heavy shade: Heavy shade is when no direct sunlight reaches a plant. This occurs at the base of northern-facing walls or beneath thick tree canopies. ► Full sun: Areas that receive full sun enjoy direct sunlight between six and eight hours per day. ► Moderate shade: These sites have reflected sunlight that may come off of water features. ► Light shade: Plants in these areas will get partially filtered or dappled sunlight. Once homeowners understand which type of shade they are dealing with, they can then visit plant nurseries and select their plants. Most greenery comes with care instructions that include recommendations regarding the amount of shade/sunlight the plant will need to do well. If further assistance is needed, a knowledgeable employee can make suggestions based on landscape needs. Those who are looking for some preliminary guidance when it comes to selecting shade-tolerant shrubs, plants or trees can consult the following list. ► Bleeding heart: Bleeding heart, or Dicentra spectabilis, is typically found in woodlands. It’s a perennial in the poppy family that produces mounded foliage and arching vine-like stems of heart-shaped flowers in the spring. ► Amethyst flower: Browallia hybrids offer starshaped blooms of blue and violet. These plants will billow out of hanging baskets or containers, and they prefer warm shade or filtered sunlight. ► Coleus: The coleus, Solenostemon scutellarioides, is another perennial that can have a variety of different leaf colors and striations. ► Witch hazels: These are a genus in the family Hamamelidacea, which has four different species in North America. This shrub or small tree features arching branches with dense, multi-stemmed clumps. Witch hazel produces flowers in the late autumn when most other plants are sparse. ► Bayberry: Myrica pensylvanica can grow in partial shade as a hedge or natural property divider. The leaves of this shrub are aromatic when crushed. The shrub will produce tiny, gray/white fruits in late summer. ► English Ivy: Also known as Hedera helix, this trailing plant is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant. It will spread easily and can become invasive. Those searching for shade-tolerant trees can choose among Sugar maple, Black alder, Flowering dogwood, and White spruce, among others. Shade-tolerant plants can make welcome additions to the landscape, offering greenery and color in the darker areas of a property.

Do this even if you know the former keyholders because you never know who they shared keys with. This fix is quick, inexpensive and it provides you with peace of mind. ► Flooring updates. Redoing a floor is always easier when the floor is empty. Whether you’re choosing to redo wood floors or lay tile before you move in, tackling this process now also allows you to keep wood and tile dust off of furniture and collectables. ► Roof repairs. Roof repairs are a must. If the home inspection revealed any damage to the roof, make the necessary repairs before moving in. Choose a contractor experienced with the type of shingles your home requires. Several of the largest shingle manufacturers have programs for contractors who meet certain qualifications, like TAMKO Building Products’ Pro Certified Contractor program. Homeowners can easily locate a TAMKO Pro at www. TAMKO.com/find-a-pro to get their project started. ► Removing popcorn ceilings. No one likes these. We’re not sure anyone ever did, but alas, they are a common sight, especially in older homes. Popcorn ceilings (and walls) are easy to remove, but messy. Use a spray bottle to moisten an area, then scrape the texture off with a towel. Clean-up will be much easier if you complete this project before introducing your furniture to the space. ► Fix leaks. If left untreated, water leaks can do serious damage to furniture, rugs, flooring and other valuables. Leaks can also lead to secondary problems like rotting wood, mold and mildew. And let’s be honest, no one wants to live in a house where you can’t use the water, so address plumbing issues before you move in. ► Child and pet proofing. Careful child and pet proofing can protect your babies (furry or otherwise). Gates at the top and bottom of stairs, outlet covers and locks on cabinets, drawers and any other place chemicals or medicines are kept, can help make your new home a safer place.

PLANNING A PROJECT? Did you know there are State building codes you must follow while doing a home improvement project to ensure safety for those living in the home as well as the safety of any future buyers of your property? Most projects require a building permit. Some examples of those projects are replacing shingles or siding, new decks, home additions or basement finishing, altering room walls or installing drywall, as well as placing storage sheds on your property. There are a few home improvement projects that do not require a building permit, examples of those would be painting or wallpapering and replacing floor coverings. During the planning phase is the best time to gather information on zoning and building code requirements! Call 507372-8640 or stop by Community Development located in City Hall 303 Ninth Street to discuss whether or not a permit is needed for the work being completed as well as discuss the requirements that may apply to your project.

Check off your backyard bucket list: seed, weed and feed Brandpoint From Sunday picnics and impromptu barbecues to games of catch, make your lawn center stage this spring. Everyone longs for a lush, green lawn, but many homeowners aren’t sure how to achieve it. In fact, although 81 percent of Americans do their own lawn care, 69 percent say their lawns could be better, and nearly a third aren’t sure how to grow a healthy lawn, according to a survey by the National Association of Landscape Professionals. A strong, green lawn can give back to you in so many ways and getting there is easier than you think. The lawn health experts at Scotts say the keys to a great lawn are seed, weed and feed.

Seed Did winter do a number on your lawn? Heavy foot traffic, plows, snow shovels and salt can damage your turf, and after the first melt visible dirt spots and dead zones may appear. When spring temperatures reach 60 degrees or higher, seeds will germinate best and it’s time to repair winter damage. Patch and repair your lawn to fill in bare spots, help crowd out weeds and strengthen your grass to help withstand heat and drought. Start by removing debris and dead grass in the surrounding area, and loosen hard soil, this will help grass seedlings take root. Evenly apply a quality seed, like Scotts EZ Seed, so the bare area is mostly covered, but bare ground is still visible. Be sure to only apply the recommended amount so that seedlings have enough

space to access water and nutrients. Scotts EZ Seed is a combination of fertilizer, grass seed and super absorbent mulch that is guaranteed to grow grass anywhere with proper care, whether on a hill or slope, or in a densely-shaded area.

Weed Preserve your healthy and beautiful lawn by keeping it free of weeds. Common weeds like dandelions and clover can choke out healthy grass. Therefore, it’s important to address weeds in spring so they won’t have a chance to thrive in summer. Removing weeds can be a challenge, especially if any roots are left behind as they can quickly grow into a new plant. Get rid of weeds by using a weed-control product like the improved Scotts Turf Builder Weed & Feed. It is formulated with up to two times more powerful control of dandelions and clover compared to the previous formula, so it kills weeds and feeds grass to make it green and thick.

Feed Continuing to feed your established lawn is critical to its nutrition and overall success. Your lawn requires feeding about every six weeks, and its nutritional needs will vary throughout the season. Choosing the right food at the right time can help ensure your lawn stays thick and green all spring and summer. For example, if your yard needs a boost towards the end of spring use Scotts Green Max Lawn Food, it provides your lawn with essen-

tial nutrients, like iron, that give grass its rich green color in just three days. No two lawns are alike. A number of factors including where you live or whether you have a sunny or shady backyard affect how to treat your grass. Not sure which products are right?
