Harris-Lake Park The Harris-Lake Park schools have several new programs and staff positions in place for another year of classes. • The schools received the Teacher Leadership Grant, which allowed them to hire new staff in teacher coaching positions. • There will be a technology coach at each school to help teachers and students to better utilize technology as a teaching and learning tool. • The district hired a literacy coach who will help teachers and students implement new and better literacy techniques. • The elementary school has a new math series for grades K through 3 that will supplement the current curriculum. • The high school has an agreement with the Iowa Lakes Community College in which students earn credit at the high school and college at the same time. Eligible students can attend their Health Sciences Career Academy, which is taught by certified health professionals, for two hours each day and earn their CNA.

Sibley-Ocheyedan The Sibley-Ocheyedan Community School District is seeing various changes throughout its operations to prepare for another year. • The district demolished a former school building in Ocheyedan that hasn’t been used for seven years. • A softball field in Ocheyedan was updated with a new backstop and scoreboard. • Students from the kindergarten level through sixth grade will see changes in reading materials and curriculum. • The district has joined the Teacher Leadership and Compensation System in Iowa and will have a few full-time instruction coaches as part of the program. • The school board is participating in Leadership for Student Learning. it will be having work sessions to focus on student achievement and clear goals.

Worthington The Worthington School District is anticipating a wide variety of changes and events to begin a new year of classes. • Prairie Elementary has added two classrooms to accommodate its growing enrollment. • The district is no longer part of the Flexible Learning Year. As a result, school will begin on Sept. 6 for the middle and high schools and Sept. 7 for Prairie Elementary. • The school board has approved free activity passes for all students to promote involvement and attendance at school events. • The district has hired 25 new teachers who will have orientation from Aug. 22-25. • The elementary school hired an additional counselor. • A technology speaker will share with all teachers during their in-services on Aug. 29 about using technology in the classrooms. • The public will vote on a bond election for a new high school in November. • All fifth- and ninth-grade students will participate in a transition day on Sept. 1 as they are attending new buildings. • Prairie Elementary will have conferences with parents from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 1 and 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 2. • All other schools will have an open house where each student will receive their schedule, learning device and locker. The schedule is as follows: • Worthington High School will have its open house on Aug. 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. • Worthington Middle School will have its open house on Aug. 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. • The Worthington Area Learning Center and VIBE Online Academy will have an open house on Sept. 1 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Heron Lake-Okabena The Heron Lake-Okabena School District is excited for another year of school with new technology. The district purchased 40 iPads to add to its inventory for classroom use. Additionally, the elementary school will have 30 new computers in its lab. Additionally: • A new security door and camera system was put in the elementary school to allow the secretary to monitor who enters the building. • High school students from the National Honor Society and Student Council will attend WE Day on Sept. 20 at the Xcel Energy Center. The event promotes and celebrates youths making a difference in their local and global communities. • The roof over the elementary school was replaced over the summer.

Edgerton The Edgerton Public School District is excited to have some new staff positions and curriculum in its schools. • It will have a new science teacher to reduce class sizes at the middle and high school level. • A full-time ag teacher has been hired, also at the middle/high school. There was previously a part-time shop teacher that was shared with Luverne, but now Edgerton will be able to offer shop and ag classes. • With the new ag teacher, Edgerton is adding an FFA program for the first time. • The elementary school has new reading curriculum in an effort to increase test scores.

Westbrook-Walnut Grove The Westbrook-Walnut Grove Schools are experiencing some changes in administration as well as some updates in equipment. • The 38-year principal of the Westbrook 7-12 school, William Richards, retired after last year. • Superintendent Loy Woelber will continue his duties and assume the additional role of principal for the high school. • The Westbrook school is finishing the installment of an air conditioning system in its gymnasium. • The Walnut Grove school will have new kitchen appliances, which it acquired through a grant.

Pipestone Area The Pipestone Area Schools will have program updates and new staff members for the 2016-17 school year. • The district hired Kevin Enerson as the new superintendent. • Toni Baartman has been hired as the new principal of the elementary school. • The high school is reintroducing its business program, which was dropped two years ago. • A reading/ELL specialist was hired by the district to supplement its expanding ELL program. • A 1:1 iPad initiative will be in place for grades 2-4 at Hill Elementary. • Students in grades 5-6 will participate in a 1:1 Chromebook initiative. • The high school will be resurfacing its track. • The school board approved to contract Taher Food Services to provide meals for all schools.
