In the crowded world of Champaign-Urbana Thai food, one spot clearly reigns supreme.

Bangkok Thai Restaurant & Pho 911, the frst recommendation to locals as well as any campus newcomer, sits in a cozy alcove at the corner of Green and Fifh streets.

The location is a slice of comfort in the chaos of college life, ofering an array of Thai curries, noodle dishes and appetizers, as well as pho.

Vibrant murals of sunsets and palm trees cover the walls, and red, cushiony seats litter a lively dining room. It’s nothing fancy or pretentious, and perhaps it is this approachability that makes it so beloved.

Bangkok Thai’s popularity may also be attributed to the generous portions, afordable prices and the varying spice levels it ofers.

A heaping serving of fried rice or a bowl of steaming pho delivers any weary student the warmth to persist through even the coldest of midwestern winters.

Among many students, grocery stores near the University evoke feelings of disappointment.

The Campustown Target, albeit convenient, has ransacked shelves from hurried college students simply trying to survive. Meanwhile, the County Market on South Fourth and East Springfeld is used as a last resort for desperate college students willing to pay the “county markup.”

SENIOR NEWS REPORTER

Whether you’re heading to class in the early morning or you’re a giddy socialite walking east on Green Street, the vibrant “Alma Mater” mural is hard to miss. Painted by Chicago artist Levar Hoard, the artwork depicts the University’s iconic Alma Mater statue with her arms outstretched against an azure blue sky and DNA helix background.

The mural adorns the Skyline Tower and stands at a whopping 160 feet, starkly

contrasting against a sea of blank brick walls. In gazing up at the mural from the streets below, the art seems to blur into a lifelike replica of the Alma Mater in the clouds.

Muralists Ryan “Yanoe”

Sarfati and Eric “Zoueh” Skotnes brought Hoard’s vision to life in 2022, creating what they described as the tallest piece they had worked on at the time. In a previous interview with The Daily Illini, Hoard said the mural symbolizes the soul of the Campustown community, as “Alma” translates to “soul” in Latin.

In creating the mural, the artists said they sought

BEST HOUSE SHOW VENUE

STAFF WRITER

NINA ATHANASOPOULOS aka10@dailyillini.com

House shows are a cultural campus staple for students and the Champaign-Urbana community as a whole.

GayBar brings a twist to the basement scene, being a venue that spotlights local and traveling DJs.

By mainly featuring pop and EDM music, GayBar sets itself aside from the typical style of music that’s featured in this sector of campus partying, as these shows normally feature alternative and rock music.

Still, the venue doesn’t lose the energy and vibe of a typical Urbana adventure.

For those just venturing into the house show scene, GayBar is a great place to start. Not only are safety and comfort a priority for the owners of the venue, but the attendees are welcoming and the ultimate hype-people.

Another significant feature of GayBar is — of course — the themes tailored toward its queer audience.

While themed nights at house shows are common at most locales, GayBar offers a new kind of space that is centered around LGBTQ+ culture and joy.

Attendees dance to DJ Aditi’s set at the “Will You Be Mine?”

Valetine’s Day benefit for cancer research at GayBar in Urbana on Feb. 15.

From sapphic night to emo night, this venue has endless opportunities for a good night out. GayBar is fun, flirty and, best of all, queer.
