The ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ movie has been pushed to next year By Sonia Rao The Washington Post

tachioed Jim Carrey, no less.) “Taking a little more time to make Sonic just right,” director Jeff Fowler tweeted Friday morning, with an illustration of the hedgehog’s gloved hand holding a sign displaying the new date. The timing is just a happy coincidence, of course, as the real reason Paramount delayed the movie, originally slated for a Nov. 8 release, has to do with the outcry that followed the trailer’s release at CinemaCon three weeks

M

aking Valentine’s Day plans can be stressful, so how lucky for us that Paramount has already come up with a suggestion for next year by pushing the release date of “Sonic the Hedgehog” to Feb. 14, 2020. What better way to show your love than with a pair of tickets to the movie starring James Marsden and Sonic, his latest CGI animal friend? (Opposite an evil, mus-

ago. Backlash is somewhat typical of liveaction adaptations that draw from nostalgic source material, but this instance had less to do with the movie existing — though there was some of that — and more to do with the main character’s appearance. Specifically, his teeth. The furry blue hedgehog had human teeth. The movie follows Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) and police sheriff Tom Wachowski (Marsden) as they face off against the evil Doc-

tor Robotnik (Carrey). After Tom discovers Sonic in the trailer, the hedgehog tries to play it cool. “Uh, meow?” he says with his arms outstretched, mouth open wide and chompers on full display. Tom’s immediate response is to yell — displaying his own, appropriate set of human teeth — and shoot Sonic with a tranquilizing dart. “WHY ARE HIS TEETH SO HUMAN,” one Twitter user demanded to know. Someone else referred to them as Sonic’s “most cursed

aspect.” The disturbed reactions were so widespread that Vulture even asked a real-life hedgehog dentist why she believed people were so upset. She said that “hedgehog teeth are cute and small, just like them,” so maybe people “don’t think big teeth match the tiny, cute hedgehog.” Fowler, who rarely tweets, returned to the platform within days to respond. “Thank you for the support. And the criticism,” he wrote. “The message is loud

and clear ... you aren’t happy with the design & you want changes. It’s going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be …” But changes to visual effects require a lot of time and hard work, which Fowler acknowledged in his tweet on Friday with the lengthy hashtag #novfxartistswereharmedinthemakingofthismovie. The countdown to Valentine’s Day begins.

There are some animals that people are simply not allowed to possess in Florida, or at the very least, that people can’t have unless they have a permit. Bears, tigers, rhinoceroses and crocodiles are illegal. Cougars, howler monkeys, wolves and cassowaries are fine as long as a permit is obtained. Particularly applicable in this instance: Florida law does not allow the capture or possession of poisonous reptiles —

Florida sheriff’s deputies turned on their lights and sirens. When they approached the pickup, the driver said he and his passenger had been collecting frogs and snakes from under a nearby overpass. The driver, Michael Cody Clemons, told officers that he and his passenger, Ariel -

So the Charlotte County deputy asked Clemons and Marchan-Le Quire if they would open their backpacks and show their haul — just to make sure they didn’t have anything illegal, the report says. Clemons, 22, had clothes and other personal items in his bag. Marchan-Le Quire, 25, grabbed her backpack from the floor next to her feet and unzipped it to show 43 small turtles piled

inside, the report says. “Anything else?” a second deputy asked. It was then that Marchan-Le Quire reached into her yoga pants and tugged out a foot-long alligator. According to the incident report, the state’s

The price of insulin is surging In Australia, 46 million banknotes are circulating with typos

Colorado is the first to make insurance companies eat the cost By Orion DonovanSmith The Washington Post

A

new Colorado law will ensure that those living with diabetes will spend no more than $100 per month on insulin, making it the first state to limit the cost of an increasingly expensive medication millions of Americans rely on. More than 30 million Americans have diabetes, and some 7.4 million of them must take insulin every day to live, according to the American Diabetes Association. Although insulin was discovered nearly a century ago, costs continue to rise. A January report from the Health Care Cost Institute, a nonpartisan research organization, found the price of an insulin prescription roughly doubled nationwide from 2012 to 2016. The bill Gov. Jared Polis, D, signed into law Wednesday will take effect in January 2020, the Denver Post reported, capping monthly co-payments

and requiring insurance companies to absorb the additional cost. The law does not limit what insulin manufacturers can charge insurers. The legislation was introduced by state Rep. Dylan Roberts, D, who lost his younger brother, Murphy, to Type 1 diabetes, CBS Denver reported. Polis said he signed the bill “to honor Murphy’s memory, and of course for the 400,000 Coloradans who live with diabetes.” The move came amid increased attention on rising insulin costs, which have drawn the attention of Congress. In a hearing of the House Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee in April, Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo., emphasized the life-or-death nature of the issue. “We have been hearing stories and reading disturbing news reports for too long,” DeGette said. “People are skipping doses, failing to pay rent or buy groceries, and even resorting to

1995. Her steady presence on Australia’s most frequently distributed note, the 50 (worth about $35 in U.S. currency), hid a more worrisome change in the fine print, however. To spot it, you would have needed either very good eyes or magnifying glasses. In extremely fine print, in lines of type to the left of Cowan’s portrait, the word “responsibility” is spelled “responsibilty,” twice. The words are part of Cowan’s inaugural speech in July 1921, in which she said: “It is a great responsibility to be the only woman here, and I want to emphasise the necessity which exists for other women being here.” (“Emphasise” doesn’t count as a typo; it’s the widely used British spelling of “emphasize,” the U.S. version of the word.) Compared with other mistakes, the typos are almost certain to secure Australia a spot in the hall of fame of currency blunders that reach back far in history. When the Bank of Canada started printing bank notes bearing the likeness of Queen Elizabeth II about seven decades ago, for instance, the institution received numerous complaints from readers who believed they had spotted a devil in

ank notes can have some similarities with books we put into our shelves to show off, but have never really closely examined — let alone read. Millions of copies, tucked away in people’s homes, gradually changing from their “just purchased” clean look to a more yellowed afterlife. But sometimes, after months or years, someone finally takes a closer look. In the case of Australia’s new 50-dollar note, released last October, that happened more than six months later. By that point, 46 million notes had already been circulated — passed around by Australians who had no idea that what they were really holding in their hands was a note with typos, or as some (half-) jokingly said: a national embarrassment. Granted, the mistakes weren’t too easy to spot. All a careless recipient would have noticed would have been, at best, the drawing of Edith Cowan. In 1921, she became Australia’s first member of Parliament, for which she has been honored on Australian banknotes since

her hair. In subsequent editions, the queen’s hair was reworked to look less like a portrait from hell. The queen also caused a currency dispute in Australia once. Amid a debate over the monarchy’s official status and influence in Australia, the government made a U-turn in the 1960s, after proposing to rename the Australian dollar “the royal.” Previous ideas that were skipped reportedly included “the dinkum” and “the boomer.” While Australia averted disaster, the Philippines faced irreversible embarrassment in 2005, when it was realized that new bank notes misspelled the name of then-President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. On the notes, her last name was spelled “Arrovo.” The notes, authorities said at the time, were still valid, and, in fact, they quickly became coveted by collectors. That is less likely in the case of Australia’s erroneous 50-dollar bills, given that there are more notes in circulation than the country of almost 25 million has citizens. Its central bank has announced that the misspelled notes already in circulation will eventually be replaced — even THE DAILY though that REPUBLIC might take (Mitchell) some time.

an insulin ‘black market’ in order to afford their insulin.” The Colorado bill cites a 555% rise in the cost of insulin, adjusted for inflation, over the past 14 years. The new law also tasks Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, D, with investigating the cause of the recent price increase, focusing on the three largest insulin manufacturers, Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk and Sanofi. Bill Johnson, a senior researcher at the Health Care Cost Institute and a co-author of the January report, was cautiously optimistic about the Colorado law. He emphasized that he was speaking for himself and not his employer. “In general, I think anything that can be done to help ease the burden of out-ofpocket costs associated with insulin is probably a good thing,” Johnson said, but he added the caveat that “part of what the bill will do is to shift costs from patients back to insurers, and insurers may try to recoup that in some other way.”

DC has the nation’s best park system, study says By Justin Wm. Moyer The Washington Post

W

hen not being criticized as a swamp that must be drained, Washington, D.C., is occasionally praised for its arboreal charms. Now, it is official: The District of Columbia took the top spot in a national survey of large U.S. cities with the best parks. The survey, released Wednesday by the San Francisco-based nonprofit the Trust for Public Land, ranked the nation’s 100 largest cities on park access, acreage, investment and amenities. The District came in at No. 1, with a “ParkScore” of 83.8 out of 100. The report noted that 98% of D.C. residents live within a 10-minute walk of a park and 21 percent of the city is park land. “D.C. is truly a city of parks that serve as hubs of activity and beauty for neighborhoods and provide substantial social, economic and health benefits to our residents,” D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said in a statement. “We’ve invested more than $200 million to ensure all residents have access to playgrounds, nature trails and other public

parks that have made D.C.’s park system the envy of cities across the nation.” The District leaped into first place after besting Minneapolis and St. Paul, which led the survey last year. Charlie McCabe, director at the Center for City Park Excellence at the Trust for Public Land, credited an increase in amenities like basketball hoops and splash pads for the District’s gain. Money is the key to better parks, McCabe said, and some cities at the bottom of list that still are recovering from the Great Recession don’t have it. “These cities are seeing good growth, a positive influx of population, more density, more tax revenue and more spending,” he said of the top scorers. “That is the bottom line.” D.C. spends $270.40 per resident on parks, the survey found. While the District has many federally funded parks, the city earned points for amenities largely found in its neighborhood parks, McCabe said. These cities topped the list: 1. Washington, D.C. 83.8 2. St. Paul, Minn. 83.2

‘Best if used by.’ The FDA

renders its decision on food expiration date labels By Laura Reiley The Washington Post

T

he Food and Drug Administration weighed in Thursday on a question that Americans have struggled with for years: Is it OK to eat that recently excavated item from your fridge past the date stamped on the label? Until now, the answer was it depends. Food product makers used a confusing array of more than 50 descriptions on grocery items: “use before,” “sell by,” “expires on.” Industry and advocates agreed that was confusing for consumers — and a driver of food waste, with people tossing food that was perfectly safe to eat. Current date labels on packaged foods aren’t user-friendly, Frank Yiannas, the FDA’s deputy commissioner for food policy and response, said in a phone interview Wednesday. It is hard for consumers to be sure whether the food was safe to eat, or whether it would just taste better before the date on the label. Sometimes the date on the label was “best sold by”— and not “best used by” — but still it was sent glugging into the sink as soon as that date rolled around. And so after a two-

consumers about which label conveys the information best, and consumers overwhelmingly chose ‘best if used by,’” Yiannas said. “If there’s a date label that’s about a food-safety issue, at this point they have the latitude to put whatever terminology they need to convey that risk.” The FDA opinion is not binding on industry. “Food producers have the liberty to put date labels on foods however they choose,” Yiannas

said. But it puts an important seal of approval on an initiative to streamline date labeling launched by the food industry in 2016. “Today’s FDA announcement supporting standardized use of ‘Best If Used By’ is a win for American consumers,” Geoff Freeman, president and chief executive of the Grocery Manufacturers Association, said in a statement.

The highest paying entry level jobs, according to Glassdoor By Hamza Shaban The Washington Post

A

decade after the Great Recession, when new college grads walked into an abysmal job market with long-lasting effects, the Class of 2019 is joining the workforce during an economic upswing, complete with historically low unemployment and rising wages. For technically minded graduates, the prospects are even brighter, according to a ranking of the

highest-paying entrylevel jobs compiled by Glassdoor. In fact, any one of the 25 occupations listed can expect to outpace the U.S. median of $52,807, the salary and career website found. Tech roles dominated the Top 25 list, according to the analysis, thanks in part to the value businesses place on STEM-related skills and education, and the immense influence of advanced technology and engineering in cor-

porate America. “This list can serve as a menu of aspirational jobs to potentially work toward, especially as the majority of these entry-level jobs are in the STEM field and require strong technical skills,” said Amanda Stansell, senior research analyst at Glassdoor. Though pay is a key consideration, she said, long-term job satisfaction is defined by other factors, such as “culture and values, career

opportunities and trust in senior leadership.” Case in point: The top-paying entry level position, data scientist, also scores high in overall job satisfaction and the number of available positions. For those reasons, it has been Glassdoor’s best all-around job in a separate ranking for four consecutive years. College graduates are entering a hot job market. Wages grew 3.4 percent in the past year,

the government reported in March, the biggest increase since the Great Recession. Earlier this month, the U.S. Labor Department said unemployment fell to 3.6 percent, the lowest level since 1969. Businesses are struggling to fill their openings, giving workers leverage to demand higher pay and seek better paying jobs. Unlike a decade ago, when many a job hunter was desperate for a call back, it’s now new work-

ers who are “ghosting” their jobs. Many employers also are lowering their job requirements to snap up candidates quickly and edge out the competition. To come up with its list, which was compiled using 2018 data, Glassdoor ranked the highest median annual salaries reported on its website by U.S.-based employees aged 25 or younger. It only considered jobs that had received at least 25 salary reports.

Virgin Galactic’s move into its permanent headquarters at Spaceport America, north of Las Cruces, signifies the acceleration of his effort to build a viable space tourism business. from California as it prepares to wind down its test flight program, Virgin Galactic announced Friday during a ceremony with Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham in Santa Fe. The next step — actually flying customers — could begin later this year. “The longheld promise of uniting our spaceship with

a dedicated Spaceport America is finally happening,” Virgin Galactic Chief Executive Officer George Whitesides said in a telephone interview. Branson has said he will be among the first passengers; Whitesides said he and his wife, Loretta, will probably fly in 2020. Blue Origin, the space effort by Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos, also plans its first commercial flights for this year. Virgin Galactic’s flights from Spaceport America involve a carrier aircraft that takes the spacecraft to an altitude of about 45,000 feet, where it drops and then fires its rocket to climb into suborbital space. Passengers, who first spend about two days at Virgin Galactic’s campus preparing for the trip, will experience about 10 minutes of weightlessness before descending for a landing at the spaceport. In February, Virgin Galactic completed its final California test flight in Mojave, flying its first non-pilot employee, astronaut

instructor and former NASA engineer Beth Moses. Moses is helping design Virgin Galactic’s cabin and customer preparation protocols. Her flight marked the first time Virgin Galactic’s VSS Unity suborbital spacecraft had topped a speed of Mach 3, three times the speed of sound; it was also the highest altitude the company’s spacecraft has flown, at 295,000 feet, or 56 miles above the Earth. Virgin Galactic already has about 700 customers who are each paying $250,000 for a 90-minute flight. Branson’s space effort had suffered delays due to major engineering changes that were required after the 2014 crash of its VSS Enterprise, which killed pilot Michael Alsbury. Virgin Galactic plans a few additional test flights from New Mexico in late summer or early fall, with additional employees along for the ride as the company finalizes its operating procedures. “We want to make sure we have a very choreographed service and

offering planned out,” Whitesides said. “We want to give the pilots a few times to just fly it.” Of the work remaining to be done, Whitesides said “The No. 1 thing is we need to finish installation of the commercial cabin. Our interiors team is sort of going through that process to create the world-class Virgin cabin everyone expects — and that’s going to entail a lot of work.” Beyond the cabin work, Virgin Galactic is also ferrying its ground and training equipment from California. “We’ve moved from the realm of space-age physics to logistics,” he said. The company is also exploring small aircraft to begin frequent employee shuttle flights between Mojave — where Virgin subsidiary The Spaceship Co. employs several hundred people — and Spaceport America as a way to avoid the time-inefficiencies of flying commercial. El Paso, Texas, the nearest major airport, is about a 90-minute drive south of Spaceport America.

A sneaker that fixes itself? It could be coming soon By Lela Nargi The Washington Post

P

icture this: You’re playing soccer with friends. As you kick the ball, you realize the bottom of your foot feels cold and wet. You turn your sneaker up to look at the sole. A big crack is letting water from puddles seep right through it. When you get home, you throw your ruined sneakers in the trash. Now imagine another scenario. You don’t throw the sneakers away. Instead, you push the two sides of the cracked sole together so

they’re touching. You leave the sneaker in a warm spot. A few hours later, the crack has fused itself back together. Thanks to Qiming Wang, a self-healing sneaker sole could soon become reality. He’s a professor at the University of Southern California’s Viterbi School of Engineering. In February, he, three of his students and a professor from the University of Connecticut announced that they had invented 3-D-printable rubber that could fix itself. “It can heal just like a wound to your muscle, returning to its orig-

inal structure,” Wang says. The material could be used to 3-D-print not only sneaker soles, but also toys, bike tires, even satellites. The material is a kind of rubber made of silicone. When it’s exposed to heat, it causes a chemical reaction that bonds its atoms back together. The higher the heat, the quicker this happens. Wang says healing can happen at room temperature, too — it just takes more time. To 3-D-print a self-healing object, the first step is to make a model of it in the com-

puter. The model is virtually “sliced” into 100 smaller images. This first image is projected onto a thin layer of the rubber, which starts out as a liquid. The rubber takes on the shape of the image, and the light from the projection turns it from liquid to solid. The next image is projected on another layer of liquid rubber on top of the first one. The final, complete shape is built up layer by layer like this. Many different companies “want future technology like this,” Wang says. His research was funded partly by

the United States Air Force. It is hoping to make “3-D-printed airplane wings that can self-heal after impact with a bullet or a bird,” he says; 3-D printing makes this kind of manufacturing quick and inexpensive. After Wang’s team published its research, it was contacted by footwear companies that want to use their material to make shoes. First, though, Wang and his team have to try to make it in different levels of hardness. They also need to figure out how to make wounds such as punctures, which

have ragged edges that don’t touch on all sides, recover their original shape so that healing can happen. Wang thinks it will take two or three years for their material to show up in shoes we buy in stores. One exciting thing about self-healing materials is the amount of waste they could eliminate — especially with so much plastic littering our oceans and landfills. Wang’s special rubber can self-heal “more than 10 times, no problem,” he says. When it can’t heal anymore, it can be recycled.

Many teens sleep with their phones, survey finds — just like their parents By Craig Timberg The Washington Post

F

our out of five teenagers with mobile devices keep them in their rooms overnight — and nearly a third of those bring them into their beds while sleeping — according a study Wednesday that offered new evidence that mobile devices undermine the rest necessary for peak health. The study, based on a poll of 1,000 children and parents by consumer advocacy group Common Sense, offered the most comprehen-

sive picture yet of the impact of mobile devices on teen sleep patterns, which researchers long have warned can undermine cognitive functioning and mental health while increasing obesity rates. The poll also found smartphones caused conflict within homes as many parents fear the devices are causing their teens to become “addicted.” But the most striking findings, according to researchers, concerned the round-theclock nature of how teens use mobile devic-

es. Many reported using their phones moments before bedtime, almost immediately upon rising and at least occasionally during the night; the main activities included checking social media, playing games and watching videos. Many parents of teenagers reported similar — and equally worrying — habits about their own smartphone use. “People are using their mobile devices all the time,” said sleep researcher Lauren Hale, a professor of public health at Stony

Brook University, who reviewed the study by Common Sense. “I’m not surprised by these numbers, but they certainly are high.” Common Sense, based in San Francisco, often criticizes Silicon Valley while advocating on behalf of parents struggling to manage teen technology use, but chief executive James P. Steyer said the new research should be a wake-up call, especially to mothers and fathers. “It’s a parent’s responsibility to understand this in terms of

HOME

their own sleep and in terms of their kids’ sleep,” Steyer said. He also called on the technology industry, which over the past year has given parents new tools to limit their children’s use of mobile devices, to mount public information campaigns publicizing the importance of restful sleep. Researchers consistently point to sleep as crucial to the mental and physical health of people, including teenagers. “It’s incumbent upon the industry to take a role in changing this

behavior,” Steyer said. Psychologist Jean Twenge, who warned in her 2017 book “iGen” of the ill effects of social media and smartphone use by teens, called the Common Sense findings about devices in bedrooms “stunning and horrifying.” “I knew the problem was bad, but I didn’t know it was this bad,” Twenge said. “There’s lots and lots and lots of studies in medical journals showing that people who keep their

Few things can revitalize a home more readily than a fresh coat of paint. Thanks in part to the affordability of paint and its ease of application, painting is something that even novice DIYers can typically handle. According to the marketing advice guru Brandon Gaille, it is estimated that residential interior paint only lasts around three years before it needs to be updated. Exterior paint can fade, chip and peel due to various environmental factors. As a result, many homes can likely use a fresh coat of paint in at least one room.

As DIY-friendly as painting can be, when attempting to paint the interior or exterior of their homes, homeowners may learn that some painting projects are best left to the professionals. Painting requires skill, patience and a knowledge of how various paints, including finishes for particular applications, will hold up. Novice painters may do more harm than good by dripping paint on expensive carpeting or floors or fail to recognize the nuances that indicate a spot-on painting job. Professional painters have spent hours upon hours learning the ropes of what works, and what does not. Painters often understand that painstaking preparatory work is crucial to getting pristine finished results. Walls and ceilings must be properly repaired and prepared even before a base coat is applied. Professional painters also have an eye for details. And because professional painters make a business out of doing interior and exterior surfaces, they understand which techniques can improve efficiency. That means a professional job can typically be completed much more quickly than a DIY project. Even though some people think they’ll save money by painting their own homes, that’s not necessarily true. Professionals already have all the equipment necessary, unlike novices who may need to make repeated and potentially costly trips to the

hardware store for supplies. Plus, if mistakes happen, DIYers have to spend additional time and money fixing them. Safety can be a large motivator for turning painting over to a pro. Navigating exterior areas or tall interior ceilings can be challenging and may require scaffolding or tall ladders DIYers do not have. Risk of falls or other injuries increase with lack of experience. Painting can give a home a facelift, and oftentimes it is smart to turn the work over to professionals to ensure the job is done just right.

devices next to them when they sleep don’t sleep as well, and they also don’t sleep as long.” The blue light emitted by the screens of mobile devices has been asso-

ciated with poor sleep, researchers say, but mobile devices also can cause emotional stimulation — through violent games or engaging forms of social media — that also can impair sleep or simply delay the moment when people fall asleep. The Common Sense

study, called “The New Normal: Parents, Teens, Screens, and Sleep in the United States,” found that 68% of parents believe their teenage children spend “too much time” on their mobile devices, and 61% believe their teenagers are “addicted” — about the same

as the group found in a similar study in 2016. But teens themselves are feeling better about their use of mobile devices than in that study, when 50% reported feeling “addicted” to smartphones, compared with 39% in the study released Wednesday.

The concerns about the overuse of mobile devices are not limited to teens. Nearly half of parents surveyed reported feeling personally “addicted” to their devices, and 83% keep them in their bedrooms at night, with 12% keeping the devices in bed with them.

Teens also complained about how much their parents are using smartphones, with 38% of teens reporting that their parents are “addicted” to their mobile devices. The overall margin of error for the poll was 4.4 percentage points.

Walmart plans to add in-store vet clinics, online pet pharmacy By Taylor Telford s Americans spend more than ever on their furry friends, Walmart is getting petsmart with products and services, including an expanded fleet of in-store veterinary clinics and an online pet pharmacy. Starting Tuesday, customers will be able to fill pet prescriptions — not only for dogs and cats, but also horses and livestock — online at WalmartPetRx.com and have them delivered to their doorstep. Walmart is also ramping up its in-store vet clinics, bringing them to 100 stores around the country by the end of the year. These clinics, which are already in 21 Walmart locations, will offer services such as vaccines, standard exams and care for minor illnesses. The world’s biggest retailer is cashing in on the rising wave of pet spending, which doubled between 2005 and 2018, reaching an all-time high last year of $72.5 billion, according to a study from the American Pet Products Association. This year, spending is projected to reach $75.3 billion, and research suggests millennials are fueling the increase. More millennials own pets than does any other demographic, 70 percent according to a 2018 study from TD Ameritrade. Millennials are also shifting the culture around pet ownership: they’re more likely to consider pets ‘fur babies’ and more likely to drop money on higher-end products and discretionary items such as pet clothes. On average,

millennial dog owners spend nearly $1,300 a year on their canine companions, the study found. “We know this generation is willing to pay more for quality products and services to improve the health and well-being of their pets,” Bob Vetere, chief executive of the American Pet Products Association said in a news release accompanying the study. “Today more than ever, pet owners view their pets as irreplaceable members of their families and lives.” The biggest source of pet spending is food, with owners dropping more than $30 billion on chow last year. In particular, sales of fresh and organic pet food have skyrocketed, growing more than 70 percent in the past three years, according to data from Nielsen. Premium pet foods are now more popular than generics. “We anticipate steady growth in the pet food category thanks to opportunities that reside in specialized diets, targeting the aging pet population and pets with unique dietary needs,” Vetere said in a statement. “The availability of fresh food options and subscription delivery programs is also expected to increase spending in this category.” Walmart has tried to capitalize on the trend by expanding its selection of wholesome pet foods, adding more than 100

new brands online in the past year. The Bentonville, Arkansas-based company has also developed health-conscious pet foods for its private label brands, including Pure Balance and Golden Rewards. Veterinary costs are the second-biggest source of pet spending, totaling more than $18 billion last year according to the APPA study. More owners are investing in pet insurance, and they’re taking their pets to the vet more frequently thanks to falling visit costs. Walmart has seen the growth in pet-care spending firsthand — in the past year, Walmart’s online sales of dog and cat-related health-care products ballooned 60 percent, according to a company spokeswoman. Orders through the online pharmacy totaling $35 or more will be eligible for free two-day shipping. By the end of the month, Walmart will also bring the 30 most popular pet medications to its 4,500 in-store pharmacies, making them available for same-day pickup. — Source: The Washington Post

Wear a ranch dressing swimsuit in a ranch dressing pool floatie By Maura Judkis The Washington Post

S

ure, no one needs a $35 pool float shaped like a bottle of ranch dressing. But ranch dressing has never been about needs. Ranch dressing is about our most brazen wants: to make healthy vegetables unhealthy, to put buttermilk on pizza (pizza!), to cover our fats in a coating of more fats. Ranch dressing is pure id. And if ranch dressing is for some reason your thing, you can broadcast it to the entire pool party: Hidden Valley Ranch has just released a collection of ranch-themed summer clothing and accessories. There are swimsuits and trunks, beach bags, towels, water bottles (they say “There’s a chance this is ranch”), and button-down, Hawaiian-style shirts printed with pizza and ranch

bottles, which are very Urban Outfitters meets Jeremy Scott. They join a collection of preexisting products on the Hidden Valley merch site, including a ranch fountain — like a chocolate fountain, but ranch — which would probably be a big hit at a cool wedding. There’s also a ranch flask (fill with ranch, obvi), a “Peace Love Ranch” shirt, and a “Pizza & Veggies & Wings & Fries & Hidden Valley” shirt, a knockoff of those Helvetica ampersand shirts, but without the Helvetica. All of this is to say that ranch is trying to be the summer version of pumpkin spice — a flavor preference that some people think is a substitute for a personality. It means August will be a smooth transition from your “I put ranch on my ranch” one-piece swimsuit to your “Pumpkin spice

is my favorite season” T-shirt. It’s been a good year for ranch. It started with a charming presidential campaign meme, when Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand was interrupted in an Iowa pizza parlor by a young woman who was “just trying to get some ranch.” (Gillibrand later acquired a ranch shirt of her own, but not from the Hidden Valley line.) It was followed by several new products: Hidden Valley introduced ranch dressings flavored like pizza seasoning and Buffalo wing sauce, while Heinz gave the world the extremely fun-to-say Kranch, a combination of ketchup and ranch. Anyway. Only a few lucky flavors and brands that get elevated to the status of fashion icon — such as Old Bay, if you live in Maryland, or Sriracha. Which will be next? Gochujang? Mayochup?

‘Avengers: Endgame’ shatters box-office records Movie has $1.2 billion global debut By Michael Cavna The Washington Post

T

he Avengers assembled this weekend to defeat an opponent: the modern Hollywood record books. Disney/Marvel’s new superhero entry, “Avengers: Endgame” — the 22nd movie in the 11-year-old Marvel Cinematic Universe — benefited from a perfect confluence of factors to take the movie-going world by storm and create a new set of benchmarks: It became the first film ever to top $1 billion in its opening, before adjusting for inflation. Blowing past projections, “Endgame” grossed $350 million in North America and $1.2 billion worldwide, according to studio estimates Sunday.

A week ago, industry watchers were speculating whether the film could sniff a billion dollars; it surpassed expectations by more than 20 percent “Endgame” immediately becomes the biggest movie of the year, too, topping Disney’s setup movie, “Captain Marvel,” which has grossed $1.1 billion worldwide since its early March release. With the combined global take of $2.3 billion from those two movies, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is nearly a $20 billion franchise — with “Spider-Man: Far From Home” still coming this summer. “Endgame” is already a billion-dollar behemoth, largely because of an ideal culmination of long-cultivated worldwide interest, marketing might, positive critical reception (96 percent “fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes) and virtually no competition. Plus, financially hurting theater owners eagerly turned thousands of screens over to “Avengers”

to boost their bottom line. (The film had the widest North American release to date, with 4,662 screens.) The Marvel Studios universe, under President Kevin Feige, has fostered a decade of fan loyalty, and rumors of major-character deaths in “Endgame” — following Chris Evans’ viral tweet last fall signaling that he might be wrapping his run as Captain America — heightened the intense anticipation for this capstone on the studio’s first chapter. “Kevin Feige and the Marvel Studios team have continued to challenge notions of what is possible at the movie theater — both in terms of storytelling and at the box office,” Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn said Sunday in a statement. Disney helped pull out all the box-office stops for “Endgame,” including extensive promotion, and some theaters stayed open around the clock for the opening weekend. “Endgame” topped the

record of its lead-in Avengers movie, “Infinity War,” by $93 million — a difference larger than the total North American gross of all but eight other movies in 2019. There’s also a telling barometer of just how popular the Avengers are around the world. “Endgame” has grossed nearly as much money in China — $330.5 million since it opened there Wednesday — as it has in the North American market, according to Variety. Worldwide, “Endgame” is already the sixth-biggest movie in the Marvel universe. It will set its longer-term sights on the “Avengers” film that preceded it — last year’s “Infinity War,” which grossed $2.05 billion worldwide (the first weekend total for “Endgame” is nearly double the worldwide debut of “Infinity War”). Both films were guided by sibling directors Joe and Anthony Russo, with stars Robert Downey Jr., Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett

Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle and Josh Brolin leading the expansive cast. The three-hour “Endgame” also set records for biggest foreign debut ($859 million), the biggest “single day” opening ($156.7 million domestically, including Thursday previews) and the biggest Imax opening ($91.5 million). Trade papers report that it was also the largest preseller, according to the services Fandango and Atom Ticket. “Endgame” helped the North American box office to a $397 million total weekend for all domestic releases — shattering the previous record of $314 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter. A decade ago, some industry observers questioned the price tag when Disney bought Marvel for $4 billion; the opening gross of “Endgame” represents nearly one-third of that purchase price.
