“Results You Expect...Service You Deserve”
Fashion is supposed to anticipate desires, so Prada offers civility By Robin Givhan The Washington Post New York he designer Miuccia Prada showed some lovely clothes at her pink-bedecked headquarters here last week. She showed them on an ethnically diverse group of models. And while she invited her share of celebrities — Sofia Coppola, Marsai Martin — and influencers, she presented her collection without much hype or fanfare. There were dresses in an oddball mix of prints; shades of caramel and cinnamon blended together in roomy jackets; oversized paillettes jazzed up knits; and bowling bag-style purses harked back to a Prada classic. The collection was very “Prada,” meaning that it had its share of quirky color combinations, eccentric prints and the ability to extract sex appeal from rather demure silhouettes. In her collection notes, the designer focused on the idea of simplicity. But in a cultural sense, the clothes were more about civility — and the longing for it. In that way, it was an idealistic
By February, it had assembled an advisory council on diversity and inclusion, led by artist Theaster Gates and filmmaker Ava DuVernay, and announced plans for internships and apprenticeships and other steps aimed at mitigating the hurt to the public and the damage to the brand’s image. Redemption is in actions — and results.

So the public waits and watches. But in the meantime there is this: a collection that is not about chest-beating and bravado, but calm. This is not the brand’s first collection since the accusations of racism. But it’s the first runway show here since then. It’s part of the fashion’s industry’s in-between season: Resort 2020. These are the clothes that
would seem to be perfect for right now, when you might like a light jacket in the morning when the air is crisp or you’d prefer a dress with long sleeves for a little extra warmth during the evening commute. Resort is typically not a season that moves the fashion needle forward, but these are the clothes that stay in stores longest waiting for custom-
ers to buy them at full price. These are more accessible clothes; they don’t require an interpreter to make them understandable. These are the clothes most likely to be seen on the street. And with so much else to sort through in our world, Prada suggests wrapping yourself in a little peace and quiet — if not of your own making, then of hers.

collection, as we are living in pretty much civility-free times. Sometimes fashion reflects what’s going on in the world; sometimes it reminds us of what’s missing. In December, Prada was in the thick of righteous incivility. The brand was the focus of social media fury over a keychain charm — a cartoon trinket — that was the inspiration for a window display in its SoHo store. Critics saw the little brown monkey with the bright red lips as evocative of black face, golliwogs and other racist ephemera that continue to pollute the culture. The incident, which spilled from the virtual world into the real one, was representative of just how deeply a company can insult and wound the public and how virulent the public response can be. Ignorance is maddening and inexcusable. And the public is right to react fiercely when the subject is racism. But after the yelling, what? The company publicly apologized and removed the product from stores.

5 percent of American adults consider themselves vegetarians By Linda Searing The Washington Post
Vegetarians do not eat meat, poultry or seafood, but some vegetarians follow more specific eating patterns. For instance, besides abstaining from meat, poultry and seafood, lacto vegetarians also do not eat eggs but do consume dairy products. Ovo vegetarians eat eggs but do not consume dairy products. And lacto-ovo vegetarians eat both eggs and dairy products. Some people consider themselves partial vegetarians, meaning they do not eat meat but they may eat poultry or seafood. Others describe themselves as flexi-
Are the many stories about the health risks of eating meat making you think of going vegetarian? You are not alone. About 5 percent of U.S. adults these days — which would mean roughly 16.4 million people — consider themselves vegetarians, according to a Gallup poll conducted in July 2018. Another 3 percent say they already follow a vegan diet, up from 2 percent in 2012. But the pollsters say that the percentage of vegetarians has stayed essentially the same since 1999.
tarians, meaning they follow a semi-vegetarian diet that is mostly plant-based but may occasionally include a small portion of meat, poultry, fish, eggs or dairy. People who identify as vegans focus on a purely plant-based diet and do not eat any products derived from animals. Gallup found that younger adults, those 18 to 49, are more apt to be vegetarian than those 50 and older (7 to 8 percent vs. 2 to 3 percent). Vegans, however, are as common among those 18 to 29 as among people 65 and older (3 percent of both age groups).
From a health perspective, eating more fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains may help lower risk for heart disease, diabetes and some cancers, among other health benefits. But many of those benefits can be found without going all the way, experts say, consuming meat only sparingly while moving toward fish and plantbased foods.
Sam Adams brewer agrees to buy Dogfish Head
Boston Beer Co., the Sam Adams brewer, saw it shares jump after it announced the acquisition of Dogfish Head Brewery in a deal valued at $300 million, combining two well-known craft beer pioneers in the U.S. It’s the largest acquisition in the history of Boston Beer, which was founded in 1984 and in recent years has added products like Angry Orchard cider, Twisted Tea and spiked seltzer.

But until now, the company hadn’t diversified much in beer beyond the original Sam Adams brand. The rise of brands like Dogfish, started about 23 years ago in Delaware as a tiny craft brewery, have put a dent in the sales of beer-industry leaders like Bud Light and Coors. Boston Beer saw an opportunity to pounce, at least in part because the valuation of craft beer companies have come down, according to Chief Executive Officer Dave Burwick. — Bloomberg

A Utah class tracks 150 years of history By Heather May The Washington Post
S
tudents in Kayse Fernandes’s fourthgrade class used to ignore the railroad tracks that run next to the freeway and along the outskirts of their city. If they did think about them, they figured they were just an old-fashioned way to get from one place to another. But after researching, writing and illustrating a graphic novel about the colossal effort it took to build the nation’s first railroad to link the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, these kids at Horace Mann Elementary in Utah are bursting with information and awe.
They can tell you who paid for the railroads and how laborers used gunpowder to blast through mountains inch by inch, losing body parts and lives in the process. “It inspired me to support and protect the railroad,” said Keegan Barney, who is 10. “This railroad took six years to build. Men worked hard. They died for it. And some people are going to go spray-painting this (railroad), doing graffiti on this? ... I mean seriously.” Eight fourth-grade classes were chosen to make graphic novels as part of a major celebration in Utah to mark
the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. The state happened to be where Central Pacific and Union Pacific crews joined their separate rail lines on May 10, 1869. And Utah is hosting something like a birthday party, with festivals, re-enactments and train demonstrations, at Golden Spike National Historical Park. Students at Horace Mann spent weeks researching how the railroad companies raced each other to the finish line, deciding what story to tell, drawing panels and writing the words.

“It gives you confidence to draw and write your own things,” said Scarlett Smith, 9. The students said they had fun — and learned more — by creating a graphic novel instead of writing a report on their own. “You had to have your own thoughts of how to do the certain pages,” said Marley Pitcher, 9. “You can be more creative with all of your thinking.” She and the others liked how they were in charge of what to write and draw. “You feel like what it was like back then, what
they used and how dangerous it actually was,” said Micah Yancay, 10. “They would basically work you to death because you’re basically working nonstop.” Just as the railroad companies competed, the class split in half while working on the book, with each side representing one of the companies. A line taped in the middle of the classroom divided the groups, and students needed tickets to cross to the other side. Art teacher Brent Rhodes worked with them on how to draw facial expressions, action
and emotion in pencil, marker and ink. “You could feel the joy in the classroom,” said Jake Wilson, 10. “Everyone was excited. It would be math time, and we’d all be waiting to learn about the Transcontinental Railroad.” Besides learning facts and figures, the students say they figured out how they can create something amazing by helping one another. “It is so awesome that everyone in our class can work together and make the book really come to life,” said Audrina Anderson, 9.

How a ‘happy little otter’ learned to dunk By Jacob Bogage The Washington Post Hello, would you like to read about an otter dunking a basketball? Well, you have come to the right place. The otter in question is Juno, a 5-year-old southern sea otter. She was rescued as a pup near Monterey Bay in California, after her mom went missing. She is a good otter, according to the person whose job it is to evaluate otters. “She’s just a sweet, awesome otter. I can’t say enough great things about her,” marine life keeper Amy Hash said. “She’s high-energy. She loves to train. She’s a happy little otter.” The dunks are happening at the Oregon Zoo in Portland. More specifically, at a hoop that is in a behind-the-scenes area of the facility. There is a Portland Trail Blazers sticker in the middle of the backboard, which Juno earned when she learned to dunk in April. This is the story of how Juno the otter learned to dunk, a two-month-long process that has concluded with triumph and many fish snacks. Before Juno, there was Eddie the otter, who in 2012, at age 14, learned to dunk. Otters rarely live past 15, and in his geriatric state, Eddie had developed arthritis in his elbows and shoul-

Veterinarians prescribed physical therapy for Eddie, who needed to keep his shoulders and elbows active and strong. And keepers turned to basketball. Otters love to manipulate things with their surprisingly dexterous paws, and the activity required Eddie to reach up and out, flexing both troublesome joints. Eddie already knew how to retrieve an object and bring it to keepers, so keepers tossed a ball into his enclo-
sure and positioned their hands above a plastic rim. Soon, he was jamming like a pro, and he would become internet famous when footage of his slam dunks went viral. He was considered one of the longest-living otters ever when he died in December 2018 at nearly 21. “We get so attached to these animals in the zoo,” Hash said. “It was hard when he died, and in memoriam, we decided someone needs to learn to dunk a
basketball.” Keepers chose Juno — spunky, eager to please and the oldest of the zoo’s sea otters. Juno does not have arthritis, but the activity is good exercise — both physical and mental — and could be a useful therapy for joint issues as she ages. The training started with a simple game of catch, Hash said. Hash handed the otter a ball and rewarded Juno with a fish snack when she gave it back. When Juno began mastering that task, they

moved their game toward the hoop, and Hash encouraged her to rise up in the water and lift the ball over her head. “The minute the animal starts do to what you want, like she puts her arms up to the basket, she gets heavily rewarded,” Hash said. After a while, Juno started to get the hang of dunking the ball. Well, OK ... she was close. Juno rose out of the water in the middle of the hoop and jammed the ball down on the outside; it took a few more training sessions before she figured it out. But to Hash, the otter’s basketball skills weren’t complete. “I wanted her to be like Damian Lillard, because he’s so awesome,” she said, alluding to the star guard for the Trail Blazers. “She has a roll behavior where she’ll roll in the water with the ball and a spin behavior, because she has to be able to spin and roll to get to the basket.” Now, Juno can carve up defenses like a sushi chef working with fresh tuna, and she’s ready to show the world. Juno’s next lesson, Hash said, will be point guard training. “One day,” she said, “I’ll get her to throw the ball to me, and then I’ll regret it, because I’ll have an otter tossing things at me all the time.”
