So many things have to go right to win a state championship that you can’t go in there overconfident. We are certainly not going in there overconfident.” Canova rolled through the Cornbelt League without a loss, outscoring opponents 25589, and displaying a well-rounded squad. The Gang has averaged .347 as a team and 10.6 runs per game, with Justin Miller (.474 average and 24 RBIs), Jared Miller (.471 and 35 RBIs) and Gavin Gassman (.435 and 14 RBIs) head-

lining a team that has eight players hitting .300 or better with a minimum of 50 at-bats. The pitching staff has been improved, however, accumulating a 2.42 earned run average. Although Derek Miller (3-0) and Trey Krier (5-0) have logged more than 40 innings each, Canova has three more pitchers with at least 20 innings and two more with more than 10 to add a balance to the team. “This is the most pitching we’ve had in quite a few years,” said catcher Garrett

Gassman, who has four home runs and 35 RBIs. “We have two really good starters and a couple of really good guys go after them and we have a lot of good relief pitching. This year has been the first year in a long time that we’ve had enough pitching.” One area to watch for the Gang is team speed on the basepaths and in the cavernous outfield at Cadwell Park. Canova does not steal bases frequently, but its 21-for22 when they do, including a perfect 8-for-8

from Cole Gassman. That speed also comes into play in tracking balls in the outfield defensively, while also getting an extra base when hitting a ball into the alleys. “It’s a definite advantage to cover a lot of ground in a large park like that,” Dave Gassman said. “As deep as the park is and as much room as there is to hit the ball, there is more of an extra punch to take an extra base when you have speed like that. I think speed is a definite advantage.”

The South Dakota State Amateur Baseball Tournament gets underway on Aug. 7, with 32 teams fighting to make it to Championship Sunday, and the road to the title once again goes through Cadwell Park in Mitchell. A few things will be certain: there will be strong pitching, timely hitting, burgers and beer will be sold and upsets will eliminate favorites and elevate contenders. Here’s a team-by-team look at the Class B field:

Home runs remain rare at state in wood-bat era

T

here’s a reason a T-shirt is given as the prize for hitting a home run at the South Dakota State amateur baseball tournament. Going deep at Cadwell Park, or anywhere else come state tournament time, is not as easy as it once was. That is, of course, mainly because wood bats have been the mandated hitting tool since 2012, when metal bats were pushed aside. An analysis of the last decade of Class B amateur baseball tournaments – which include 31 games each year – shows the tournament averages eight home runs per year. In the three years prior to the MARCUS TRAXLER 2012 change, there was no tournament with fewer than Sports editor 25 home runs in those same 31 games. So the home run era at the South Dakota state amateur baseball tournament is certainly over. But watch the amateur baseball tournament this month at Cadwell Park, and you’re not likely to hear anyone lament the loss of the long ball. Pitching and defense remain traits held in the highest regard among amateur teams, and one could argue that the pitching in South Dakota’s teams continues to remain as strong as ever. A string of three or four hits becomes much more meaningful, as does the ability to manufacture runs with good contact hitting, walks and wise baserunning. Home runs have become even more meaningful. A three-run home run is a devastating blow in any game, but especially among amateur players with wood bats. There’s no question the change had curtailed offense. In 2011 – which was the final year using metal bats in the state tournament – there were 460 runs scored in the 31 games of the Class B tournament, or more than seven runs per team per game. In 2012, there were 247 runs scored, a 47.3 percent drop, and fewer than four runs per team per game.

In recent tournaments, run-scoring has bounced back at the Class B state tournament, including teams averaging more than five runs per game in each of the last two tournaments and three of the last four. And just for fun, we know Cadwell Park has the largest outfield in South Dakota. An examination of the size of the outfield at Cadwell Park – which measures 340 feet down the lines, 374 feet to the power alleys and 420 feet to straightaway center field – measured at about 2.2 acres, which is about 12 percent larger than Sioux Falls Stadium (1.93 acres) and about 18 percent larger than Ronken Field at Augustana University (1.81 acres). The big outfield has likely been helpful with balls dropping in as hits, even if it has taken away some home runs. In the five previous tournaments played with wood bats at Cadwell, an average of 4.87 runs have been scored per team per game. In a small sample size (one year each), Sioux Falls Stadium yielded 4.16 runs per game per team and Ronken Field – which hosted for the first time in 2018 – allowed 5.42 runs per game last year. By no means is that scientific, but it does shed some light on how Cadwell Park has been able to remain a fair offensive park in the wood-bat era, with more room for hits and runs, even if home runs will be a tough task. All of the data points as a good sign for the health of the amateur state tournament. There’s probably a higher likelihood of a 2-1 game than a 12-11 contest, but both have proven to be fun just the same. And when there’s a home run at the state tournament, particularly at Cadwell Park, we know there’s even more reason to cheer.

South Dakota amateur baseball special for many reasons

T

here’s just something special about South Dakota amateur baseball. ► It’s special for the nicknames. We’ve got everything from Killer Tomatoes to Mudcats to Horned Frogs to Outlaws to Bankers to Flying Squirrels and just about everything else in between. Each nickname is unique and fans beam with pride sporting their favorite mascot. ► It’s special for the fields. Towns with hundreds of people pump thousands of dollars into their ballparks for a few months of glory. Countless hours are put into making the fields shine on game days and fields serve as a point of

pride for the small towns. ► It’s special for the atmosphere. Little towns come alive on hot summer nights to gab, eat, drink and RYAN watch baseball. It epitomizes smallDEAL Sports writer town America and it brings communities together for a few hours on game days. ► It’s special for the support. Moms, dads, aunts, uncles, cousins and everybody else file into the ballparks to support their favorite teams. They load up on 50/50 raffle

tickets and play trivia. ► It’s special for the tradition. Amateur baseball in South Dakota dates back to the 1930s and it’s filled with history. There’s even a South Dakota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame in Lake Norden. ► It’s special for the future. The fences are lined with kids and every foul ball is chased down for a buck or a freeze pop. The dugout is usually manned by a bat boy, who will one day be the town’s next big slugger. ► It’s special for the camaraderie. Players began battling against each other in teener and Legion ball. But there’s very little trash talk and instead fun chatter usually follows

after a double play or pop up. ► It’s special for the love of the game. There are no salaries and it’s all about playing for the guy next in the lineup. There are no airports or fancy hotels. Players travel hours for games and drive back that night with the dark South Dakota sky looking down on them. ► It’s special for the state tournament. After a one-year hiatus, it returns to Mitchell’s Cadwell Park this year. Mitchell is surrounded by these tiny towns that ooze baseball and it’s a perfect host for the tourney. Cadwell Park will come alive for 12 straight days of beer, bingo, burgers and baseball. Play ball.

A large crowd gathers in the Cadwell Park grandstand Aug. 13, 2017 for the Class B state amateur baseball championship game between the Alexandria Angels and the Larchwood Diamonds in Mitchell.

Alexandria’s Tyson Gau delivers a pitch. Matt Gade / Republic

Pitchers put to the test By Ryan Deal The Daily Republic The old adage you can never have too much pitching will again ring true at the South Dakota state amateur baseball tournament. Pitching in the 12-day, single elimination tournament comes down to strategically managing innings, arms and rest. But it all starts with the first game. “We look at game one, game two going in and decide what’s going to be our best option for game one, game two thought process and that’s really all the further we look from a strategy perspective,” Alexandria catcher/ manager Chris

Marek said. “Simply being it’s a single elimination tournament. You have to win the first one to play the second one. So you can’t overlook anybody.” Marek said the Angels start with their two-game plan and build off that. They will look at potential matchups after that, but “being single elimination those matchups may not take place simply because there’s upsets and teams get beat that maybe you don’t expect to get beat and so forth. Then it’s an in-game decision based on situation, run differential at that point and so forth.” Dimock-Emery manager Brad Bartscher shares the same philosophy. “The old saying is you have to win your first one to move on,” Bartscher said. “But I think you need to look ahead to prepare a little bit matchup-wise and who has had success against certain teams. My philosophy is to win the whole thing you do need to look ahead, although it is important to win that first game. But as far as looking ahead you need to have the right matchups to win those

Managing arms, innings key in state tourney

games.” Alexandria has used a strong pitching staff to make deep runs in recent state tournaments. The Angels have won state tournaments in 2013, 2016 and 2017, while also finishing as runner-ups in 2014 and 2015. Alexandria’s dynamite pitching staff starts with Tyson Gau and Trever Vermeulen, while Jordan Gau has also logged major innings in the past. Dakota Wesleyan University pitcher Ethan Davis joined the staff this season, while Alexandria added Parkston ace Brady Nolz as a pick-up player for this year’s state tourney. “I guess the depth of pitching is probably a key factor in our long running success at the state tournament, especially when you know you have arms you can trust in any situation to throw them in there and hopefully trust that they are going to get the job done,” Marek said. While starting pitching is crucial at state, depth among the staff is just as key for making a deep run. Dimock-Emery’s Phil Johnson is the staff’s workhorse, but Bartscher has also worked on establishing depth throughout the year. “Phil is obviously our ace and he’s our innings eater,” Bartscher said. “But Jason and Jared Schmidt, Drew Kitchens, Sam Pischke have been very, very important to us all year long. We played non-league games to get them more innings on the

mound. They haven’t thrown a lot lately, but they are going to be ready to go just because they’ve been on the mound for a certain amount of innings throughout the year.” And once teams get to state, there’s no holding back. There is no pitchcount rule and some hurlers will log major innings and sometimes going on short rest. “I would say it’s more guts and finding the desire of being able to do it,” Marek said. “That last weekend, you either have to play Thursday, Saturday, Sunday or Friday, Saturday, Sunday — potentially. That’s a tough little run there and you really can see who has the depth at that point in time. That is when it shows up.” Managers still keep track of pitches thrown. Bartscher likes to keep pitchers between 100 and 140 pitchers thrown, while also allowing his staff to do their thing out there. “There’s definitely a strategy behind it, but yet, when it comes down to it you give your horses the ball and let them go,” Bartscher said. “Everybody has those guys and obviously they are going to put the team on their shoulders and go out there. That’s where it starts and you have your other guys to bridge innings for you and piece it together. The teams that do that are going to have the success and have a chance to win the whole thing.”
