Dakotafest to embrace familiarity at 2017 show

By Caitlynn Peetz The Daily Republic After a year of firsts, Dakotafest will return to business as usual for the 2017 show.

In 2016, construction crews had recently finished construction on the Reaves Buildings Innovation and Technology Campus and Dakotafest officials launched a new app for attendees to use. But this year organizers are settling in, for the most part, and taking advantage of increased efficiency, according to Samantha Castro, marketing manager for IDEAg Group, the company that hosts Dakotafest.

“We’re just excited to get going and to what this year’s show will bring,” Castro said.

The event runs daily from Aug. 15 to Aug. 17 at the Schlaffman Farm, southeast of Mitchell. Gates will open at 9 a.m. daily, closing at 5 p.m. on Aug. 15 and Aug. 16, and 4 p.m.

And although event organizers will embrace the familiarity of the schedule for this year’s show, Castro said attendees can still look forward to an array of special events.

At the Dakotafest Education Center, American Family Insurance will sponsor Family Fun events, featuring pig races daily — 11 a.m. on Aug. 15, 2 p.m. on Aug. 16 and 11 a.m. again on Aug. 17.

The South Dakota Soybean Council will give away free chicken wings at 11 a.m. Aug. 15, and free donuts will be available all day Wednesday, Castro said.

to attend the show. In 2016, U.S. Sens. John Thune and Mike Rounds attended, along with U.S. Rep. Kristi Noem, among others.

There are approximately 500 exhibitors registered for the show so far, but Castro said spots are typically sold until Dakotafest opens, and sometimes even after the show has begun.

“It’ll be a really full show with a lot of different opportunities that will appeal to everybody,” Castro said.

Other notable events, Castro said, include the Miller Lite Bull Bash that opens at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 17 at the Rodeo Grounds. The Mitchell Exchange Club will serve burgers,

brats and beverages, and the show begins at 7:30 p.m.

NorthWest Veterinary and Supply will sponsor livestock chute demonstrations twice each day, which will include information about vaccination protocol for animals, data collection systems and more. The demonstrations will begin at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. each day.

Another surefire hit, Castro said, is the South Dakota State Extension ice cream social that begins at noon each day of Dakotafest.

Tickets can be purchased online at ideaggroup.com/dakotafest and cost $7 for one-day admission. Tickets are also available at the door on all three days of the show.

How to find Dakotafest

I-90 Exit 332, turn South onto Burr St., Continue South 1/4 mile and turn left heading East on Spruce Ave. Continue East 1 Mile.

From North Highway 37: Take a right on Hwy. 37 Bypass/truck route. Go approximately 2 blocks and then turn left onto Sanborn Street . Go south on Sanborn Street approximately 2 miles until you reach the lights at Havens Street. Turn left and proceed east on Havens until you get to the South Burr Street intersection. Turn right and proceed south past McDonald’s and just past I-90. Proceed approximately 1 block then turn left at lights and follow signs to the Dakotafest site.

From West on I-90: Take exit 332 from West I-90. Turn right and proceed approximately 1 block. Turn left at lights and follow signs to the Dakotafest site.

From East on I-90: Take exit 332 from East I-90. Turn left on South Hwy. 37 and proceed approximately 2 blocks. Turn left at the lights and follow signs to the Dakotafest site.

On Site Shuttles ON-SITE SHUTTLE: A complimentary on-site shuttle will be circling the show grounds throughout the three days. Look for the DAKOTAFEST SHUTTLE STOP signs and hop on for a ride around the perimeter of the show.

Show Office: The main office is centrally located on the corner of Main and 4th Street. Just look for the giant American flag flying proudly over the grounds. For questions, contact the show office at 605-995-1058.

PARKING LOT SHUTTLE: A shuttle will run through the parking lot during the show days to help you get from your car to the entrances and back again. Shuttles will make multiple stops throughout the parking lot.

Information Booth: Sponsored by Sukup, can be found near the East and West entrances. The staff at the information booths can answer any questions you have and can point you in the right direction.

GOLF CART RENTAL: Golf carts are available on a first-come, firstserve basis. The cart rental is located at the East entrance gate.

First Aid: Located on the south end of the grounds, near the service entrance. In case of an emergency, please alert a member of our staff immediately.

Restrooms: Air-conditioned restroom trailers are located near the ag tents and a number of portable toilets, sponsored by Agnition, are located throughout the grounds.

Lost Children: Please check in or call the Show office.

In the event of a lost child, the staff at the Show office will make an announcement over the PA system to help locate your child.

Lost and Found: Lost items should be brought to the Show office.

Product Pick-Up: Need to load large purchases? Pull up to the Show Material Handling/Loading Area, located near the Southeast corner of the show.

Handicapped Parking: Handicapped parking is available in the first row of the East and West attendee parking lots.

Parking: The Dakotafest parking lots, sponsored

by Rob-See-Co, are located on the East and West sides of the show grounds. All attendee parking is free of charge.

There are plenty of ways to get around the 50 acres of Dakotafest. Take advantage of the many convenient transportation options provided.

The livestock Demo Tent is located on the west side of the grounds. Throughout each day representatives from animal health sponsors will be available to detail their products and answer questions.

Every day the newest innovations in chutes and handling equipment will be demonstrated at 10:30am and 2:00pm. We will have different brands and models of chutes and will allow sales representatives to process calves during the demos. Livestock demos include information on: • Chutes and handling equipment • Vaccination protocol and Beef Quality Assurance (EQA) • Identification systems • Data collection systems • Pertinent industry topics
