Metro Creative photo By Brandpoint Homes with great curb appeal not only make you the envy of every neighbor on your street and provide a great first impression for guests, but they also offer increased value and take less time to sell. There are many simple, quick and low-cost curb appeal improvements that you can tackle over the weekend, or even in a day, to give your home an inviting, uplifting spirit. Add or repair a fence. Make the most of your home’s appearance by considering the details. Looking for a quick way to spruce up your home’s exterior? Adding or repairing a fence to your property is a great value add with a relatively small investment. In order to determine the perfect fence design for your home, you should first consider the end function you are most concerned with, such as curb appeal, protection from the elements or privacy. Building or repairing a fence can definitely be a DIY project that you tackle on your own. Emphasize your home’s best features. Updating window and door trim is a great way to enhance your home’s look, style and personality. One simple update can be made by coordinating window trim paint color with your landscaping, window boxes or fence for an

integrated look. Painting is one of the most cost-effective ways to update and protect the exterior of your home, with many retailers offering paint under $30 per gallon. The color of your home’s exterior features, such as fences and window boxes, should also be considered when choosing plants to landscape for added curb appeal. Mix things up and strive for four-season color. Additionally, be sure to group your plants so they have plenty of room to spread by researching how tall and wide the mature plants will be. Chuck Thuringer, owner of Chuck’s Paint and Blinds in Mitchell, said personal preference trumps finding a “four-season color,” though. “Everybody has their own, basically, personal preferences on colors, and it needs to relate to your shingle color and … your entire color scheme of the outside of your house,” Thuringer said. “Color is just a wide open palate, and it’s all about personal preference.” Just having a well-maintained paint job is most important, Thuringer said, especially if a homeowner may be looking to sell. “Just having your paint looking in good condition is probably the number one thing for having something look nice from the street,” Thuringer said.

In addition to your fence and trim, your shutters are also an important exterior feature that contributes to curb appeal. When painting shutters, it is best to use a gloss or semi-gloss sheen to create a spectacular finish. If you want them to stand out, you can even consider painting them in a contrasting color; however, if you prefer they are subtle, paint them just a few shades darker than your house. Park in style. Your garage can be an area of both function and beauty, and it is a large surface that can potentially draw attention through color. Choose a garage door style that is most complementary to the architecture of your home, and accentuate it by choosing a color that complements all your exterior elements. One tip is to match your garage door with your home’s base color or front door color, especially if it’s a dominant part of the front facade. You can also beautifully highlight the architectural beauty of your garage door by incorporating one of your home’s accent or trim colors for an additional point of interest. For an added pop of color, consider matching the garage door color with a subtler part of the exterior, such as your grout color or the darkest tones of your brick or stone.

5 ways to reinvent your garage

Metro Creative photo By Brandpoint The garage - it’s that space where you used to just store your car, lawn mower, power tools, bikes, bats and boxes of things you wore in the 90s. But to say a garage is only for storage is like saying a truck is only for hauling dressers and box springs. From game room to workshop, man cave to hangout - your garage has the potential to be anything you want it to be. So if you’re thinking of redecorating

NOW ON

or remodeling your house, don’t spend all your time picking out kitchen tile and arguing over what type of counter looks best - step into your garage and let yourself dream big. With the right materials, some creativity and a little work, you can turn your garage into the star of the house. How? TV personality and award-winning interior designer Anitra Mecadon offers the following five ideas to get you excited about all the possibilities. Toughen up your walls No matter what you want to do with your garage, first make sure your walls can stand up to real life. There’s probably no space in the house more susceptible to scratches, scuffs and accidental holes than the garage - so pick your walls accordingly. Make your garage your hideaway Sometimes you need to get away from it all - especially from your “honey do” or project list - and the garage can be

where you go, your hangout, an extension of yourself and a definite point of pride. Add a snack machine, fridge, swivel chair or two and big screen TV, and you and your friends will have it made. Lift it up Most people have a lot of stuff to store in the garage in addition to cars, tools and bikes. And let’s face it, the more available space you have, the more likely you’ll find stuff to fill it. That means you’ll need to get creative with storage. In addition to shelves and cabinets attached to the walls, another way to store your stuff is to use a raised lift system which retracts up into the top levels of your garage and comes down with a push of a button when you need something. Hang it up There are some things that just don’t belong in your house but are perfect for the garage. Just like restaurants that have walls crowded with collectibles

such as old soda signs, sea anchors and license plates - garages can follow this same design concept and personalize a space even more. Walls also can serve as anchors for storage systems that hold your tools, bikes, boxes and equipment. Do more with your floor Today, garage floors can be anything you want - yellow, red, metallic, acidwashed or made out of heavy-duty vinyl or rubber. And whether you want the grey concrete vintage look of your childhood or something that reflects your more grown-up self, when it comes to garage floors, take a chance and get inventive, because your garage can be your personal and customized sanctuary. There’s a lot you can do with a modern garage, and no matter how you decide to personalize it, the best garage remodel starts at the studs. The right drywall is as important as the right wrench in the toolbox. To learn more, visit www.askforpurple.com

Relocating in 2016? 6 tips for a stress free move By Brandpoint Does the prospect of moving have you buzzing with excitement? Or are you left with worries about packing and clutter? This moving season, an estimated 40 million Americans will move or relocate, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Moving is an exciting time, creating opportunities to start fresh and reinvent your life. But whether you’re moving by yourself or uprooting your entire family, moving presents a number of stress-causing challenges. Staying organized and planning ahead will be your best armor against the moving blues. Ease your transition with some of these professional organization tips: Make a plan Your calendar will be your best friend

throughout the moving process. As soon as you know your moving date, schedule moving help and/or a truck rental. Then, block out time in your calendar for each step of the move, including packing, payment due dates and paperwork. Schedule a day or several to walk through your home, opening every cabinet and drawer, to get rid of what you don’t need or use. There’s no sense in paying to move items you don’t want in your new home. Clear the clutter Did you know that 91 percent of Americans say they have kept an item because they feel guilty getting rid of it? That’s a lot of leftover gifts, family heirlooms, greeting cards and rarely worn clothing just lying around. And when

you have a home filled with disorganized clutter, you can spend hours searching for misplaced items. A move is a great opportunity to go through that stuff and make the tough decisions about what to keep and what to toss. If you’re downsizing or staying at a smaller place mid-move, you might need a temporary storage solution to keep some of your belongings. You can easily find and compare prices on storage units, as well as full-service storage services, at SpareFoot.com. Stock up on supplies From cleaning supplies to boxes, to labels, packing tape and scissors, you’ll want to make sure you have all the tools you need. Set up a “moving station” somewhere in your current home where

you store all your moving necessities. Be sure to select the right boxes for moving your different types of belongings. For example, you can find kitchen packing boxes that have double-wall construction which is better suited for breakables, like dishes, china, crystal and glassware. Create a moving binder A three-ring binder is an organization staple for any area of your life. Store and file moving company brochures or business cards, important paperwork like leases or closing documents and use a pouch for holding pens and sticky notes. If you’re someone who likes to store everything digitally, use an organization app so you don’t forget any important

Continued from Page 5 information, photos, websites or notes about your move. Pack like a pro Assign a color to each area or room of your home. Use colored pens, tape and stickers so you can easily see your color code from across the room or from inside a moving truck. Label all sides of your boxes so you can easily see where a box belongs even when they’re all jumbled together. If you’re hiring professional movers, this will help them know where each box should end up on moving day. Unpacking will be a breeze. Prepare for moving day Leading up to your move, make sure to hydrate, rest and eat well. Take care of yourself so that you’ll be completely ready to take on the tasks at hand. Don’t forget to pack a survival box with the essentials you need for the first night in your new home. Toilet paper, sheets, towels, soap and a coffee pot are just a few of the items that you want to be sure you can easily access. Instead of worrying about the endless moving logistics and details, focus on the exciting adventure ahead of you. Follow these tips to simplify your move for an easy, stress-free process. Go big for less: 4 simple ways to make a small kitchen feel bigger By Brandpoint Kitchen renovation is a common theme of home improvement shows, and it’s typical for the host and designer to talk about removing interior walls and “bumping out” exterior ones in order to gain more space. Everyone wants a big, beautiful kitchen, but changing the footprint of yours isn’t always practical, especially if you lack the budget of a home improvement show! You can make your snug kitchen feel bigger and fresher with a few smart improvements that don’t involve wads of cash and tearing out walls. Here are four ways to create a brighter, more expansive feeling in any kitchen, no matter how small the square footage: Increase natural light Everything looks bigger and better in the daylight, but if your kitchen has

just one small window over the sink or no windows at all, it can look dark and feel even smaller. Adding windows isn’t always possible in a kitchen where you need to reserve wall space for cabinets and appliances. Skylights can be a cost-effective and quick way to bring more natural light into a kitchen - even if it doesn’t have direct roof access. By adding Energy Star-qualified, solar-powered, fresh-air skylights, you can greatly increase the amount of natural light while keeping functional wall space. For times when you want less light, the addition of solar-powered blinds, available in designer colors and patterns, allow you to attractively shade your skylights. Operated with a programmable touchpad remote control, today’s skylights also feature a sensor that will automatically close them in case

of rain. And there’s a 30 percent federal tax credit available to the homeowner on solar powered skylights, blinds and installation costs. Take control of cabinets Who doesn’t want more cabinet space? Storage is essential in a kitchen, but too many cabinets or too dark cabinetry can make an already small kitchen feel downright miniscule. Take a long, hard look at your kitchen cabinets. Do you really need all of them? If you decide you can make more efficient use of fewer cabinets, consider removing some to make the kitchen feel larger. If you just can’t give up any cabinet space, you can still make your kitchen feel brighter by painting or staining them a lighter hue and using bright, reflective hardware in modern styles.

Glass cabinet doors can also visually open up a kitchen - and inspire you to greater organization so that the inside of your cabinets always look guest-ready. Right-size appliances You may fantasize about a six-burner professional range or a massive builtin refrigerator, but appliances that are too big for a room fail on multiple levels. They not only make the room look smaller by virtue of their dominating size, they can hinder usability by obstructing other work areas like cabinets, counters and other appliances when the doors are open. Fortunately, appliance makers offer products in multiple sizes and finishes to fit any space and design preference. Before you appliance shop, be sure to

measure the spaces where the new pieces will reside in your kitchen. Further, keep in mind the overall scale of the room, too. If your kitchen is small, a massive refrigerator will overwhelm the space, even if designated cutout for the fridge is big enough to accommodate a large one. Brighten up Choosing lighter colors and finishes is the easiest, most cost-effective way to make any space look bigger. If you’ve

already addressed the cabinets, you can further expand the visual feel of the kitchen by painting walls a light color. Replace dark floors and counters with brighter colors and upgrade faucets, cabinet hardware and light fixtures to be brighter and more reflective. Finally, try adding under-cabinet lighting above work spaces. Not only will task lighting put more illumination where you need it most when working in the kitchen, but when combined with abundant natural light from skylights it will enhance the overall effect of a lighter, brighter and bigger space.

Brandpoint photo Brighten the space and freshen the air in your kitchen with natural light and silent, passive ventilation through Energy Star-qualified, solar powered fresh air skylights from Velux. Preparing your fireplace or stove for the season By Metro Creative Fireplaces and wood-burning stoves not only can be beautiful focal points within a home, but they also provide an additional source of heat and can be used to keep rooms or entire homes comfortable without the need for additional and potentially costly heating sources. Just like more modern home heating systems, stoves and fireplaces need to be maintained, and that maintenance includes readying them before winter when they are used more heavily. Ensuring a fireplace or stove is in good working order helps to guarantee efficiency of use and safety during the winter months. Open-flame heating sources carry with them certain risks. The National Fire Protection Association states that, between 2009-2013, American fire departments responded to 56,000 home structure fires that involved heating equipment. The NFPA notes that the leading factor contributing to home-heating fires is a failure to keep things clean, principally from solid-fueled heating equipment. The following are a handful of ways to stay safe as you get ready for another cozy season around the fire. • Start with the chimney. Begin by having your chimney thoroughly cleaned and inspected. Creosote can build up inside of the chimney. Creosote is highly flammable and becomes more difficult and expensive to clean the longer it builds up inside your flue lining. In addition, animals may have created nest inside of the chimney since the last time the fireplace was used. A professional chimney sweep should be hired in this situation. He or she will be able to effectively clean the chimney in a manner that is the least messy and disruptive to residents. • Install or check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Operational alarms are essential to preventing injury or death resulting from smoke or carbon monoxide inhalation. Such detectors are inex-

pensive safeguards that should be installed on every floor of the house. Batteries should be replaced every six months, and the alarms themselves should be changed every five to 10 years. • Inspect the chimney from outdoors as well. Inspect the mortar around any bricks in the chimney and surrounding areas for cracks. If left unaddressed, these can cause dangerous fires. If there are serious cracks, a professional may need to make repairs or the chimney may need to be replaced. You also can have the chimney capped with a screen to keep animals and debris from entering. • Inspect the damper. A damper is a valve or plate that stops or regulates the flow of air inside a chimney. It should be checked prior to the first use of a stove or fireplace so homeowners can be certain it opens and closes smoothly. • Clear out flammable items. Move flammable items away from the front of a fireplace or stove. Be sure curtains or other home furnishings are far enough away that they will not catch fire from any errant sparks or flames. • Order wood now. Be sure there is plenty of wood for the season. Ask a wood supplier to estimate just how much will be needed, and double-check that the wood will arrive in time for the start of the season. By preparing for fireplace and wood stove use now, homeowners can ensure their winters are comfortable and safe.

Smart tips for buying a first-home that will be easy, affordable to personalize By Brandpoint Call this the age of personalization. You can customize practically anything these days, from the kind of information you get on your favorite news feed and the offers you receive from your bank to the icons, background and sounds on your smartphone. Personalizing something really makes it feel more “yours,” so of course you want to be able to do that to your first home. If you’re shopping for your first home, you may already know what you want to do to personalize it. However, you may not be aware that certain features can make a home easier and more affordable to customize after you’ve moved in. For example, if you think you’ll need room to expand for a growing family down the road, it will be cheaper in the long run to buy a home with an attic or basement that you can finish into living space than to try and build on an addition from scratch. As you’re shopping for your first home, keep

in mind these elements that will help make it easier and financially feasible for you to make your new home truly your own: Architectural bones that are right for you What’s your personal style? Do you favor a mid-century modern look? Art-deco? Craftsman? Colonial? It’s important to choose a home in a basic architectural style you love, because while you can affordably change the color and landscaping, it’s much harder to create a whole new look. Look for exterior features that play up the home’s architectural style, and then think of ways to customize them down the road. For example, simply painting the gingerbread trim on your Victorian style home in a different color can celebrate the look you love while making it your own. Energy efficient lifestyle features Green considerations and energy efficiency are top priorities for many of today’s firstBrandpoint photo

time homebuyers, so it’s important to look for a home that has conservation-minded features like a high-efficiency water heater or low-flow showerheads. The best eco-conscious home features, however, will also enhance your lifestyle. Upgrades like Energy Star-qualified, solar-powered, fresh-air skylights like those from Velux America provide natural light plus passive ventilation, helping to cut energy costs while reducing dependency on artificial light and ventilation sources. If you buy a home that already has skylights, you can personalize them by adding energy efficient blinds in designer colors and patterns. And if you add solar powered skylights to the home, it’s easy and cost-effective since there is no cost for electrical work to operate the units. Solar skylights, blinds and installation costs are eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit. A programmable touchpad remote allows you to adjust the amount of light entering through the venting skylights and also to adjust the blinds with the touch of button. The skylights close automatically in case of rain. You can also easily and affordably add more natural light to interior spaces like hallways and closets with Sun Tunnel tubular skylights, which can be installed by a handy DIYer in a few hours. Visit www.whyskylights.com to learn more. Room to grow More Americans are living in multi-generational homes. Whether you plan to grow your family by having kids, moving your aging parents in with you, or adopting as many pets as you can fit in your house, you may find you’ll need more space in your new home before you’re ready to move out of it. Homes that have unfinished basements and/or attics will be easier to customize for your growing space needs. Converting an attic or basement into living space can cost much less than having an addition built on your home and attics are perfect spaces to easily add light and fresh air with skylights or roof windows. A price that lets you add value Popular renovation and fixer-upper shows make it easy to understand the idea of finding a home at a price that will allow you to add value. A home that needs some renovation and upgrading will likely cost less than a comparable new home, but it also affords you the opportunity to extensively personalize your space. If you buy a home that needs work for a price well under your budget limit, you can use the extra money to invest in renovations that put your personal stamp on your home. In addition to customization for additional enjoyment, those upgrades will also allow you to instantly add value to your home.

5 interior design trends to step up your style game

Brandpoint photo By Brandpoint As the temperatures continue to warm up outside, you may be ready to embrace the adage “out with the old and in with the new” when it comes to your home’s interior design. Whether you’re a first time homebuyer looking for ways to upgrade your starter home or a seasoned homeowner seeking a refresh, these tips will give you ideas to work with on any budget. 1. Design for social connection. Given the pace of today’s technology driven life, more and more people are turning to their home as a haven, a place where they can unplug from screens and reconnect with family and friends. “An easy way to accomplish this is to design your home to encourage personal interaction,” recommends interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn. “Group comfortable furniture in ‘conversation zones’ and banish TVs to smaller rooms, freeing up larger living spaces for screen-free entertaining and relaxing.” 2. Get outside. As lines are continually blurring between indoor and outdoor living areas, it’s just as important to consider your outdoor oasis as it is your standard living

room. Adding an outdoor project like a wood deck or pergola can add resale value to your home. There are many options to accessorize your outdoor space with furniture, lighting and rugs. Build a comfortable spot that bridges the gap between inside and out, and you’re certain to spend more time outside creating memorable experiences. 3. Go natural. Many residential designers today are embracing a classic, modern style that is characterized by white, neutral tones and light wood in its natural state. This look is DIY-friendly, since the only skills required involve a light sanding and a quick coat of clear sealant. “What I like most about this trend is how tranquil unstained wood can feel when used in an all white space,” says Flynn. There’s a reason for that tranquility - studies show people have reduced signs of stress and increased relaxation in rooms with natural elements like wood. 4. Less is more. If you own a home with strong architectural features, it often works best to decorate with practical pieces that keep the overall space comfortable and sparse, allowing the unique aspects of your home to shine through. If

you have soaring ceilings or large windows that allow for an abundance of natural light, try incorporating low-slung, minimalistic furniture with comfortable upholstery. The best part? If you’re purchasing fewer pieces, that means you’re likely to save more money in the long run. 5. Don’t play it safe. It can be tempting to stick with what you know, but when it comes to interior design, that’s a recipe for lackluster beige walls. When it comes to paint, try new neutrals like grey-green, brown-grey, olive or muted bluegrey. Feel like a bigger project? It’s easy to give a room its focal point with a wood feature wall. “I like playing with lines through wall and ceiling cladding,” Flynn says. “While the look of horizontal shiplap continues to grow in popularity, I also like more of an unexpected look, such as installing planks vertically on walls.” From adding an accent wall to rearranging furniture, these are just some of the easy changes you can make to give your home a whole new look.

Smart renovation investments to prepare your home for winter By Brandpoint Do you shudder at the thought of shivering through another frigid winter? Now may be an opportune time to consider investing in some energy efficient winterizing projects to let your home stay comfortable throughout the colder months. By investing in several simple, yet cost-effective measures, you can reap both immediate and long-term benefits. While instinct may urge you to increase the heat during winter and keep your home toasty all day long, that’s not always cost-effective. Investing in a programmable thermostat allows you to adjust the temperature remotely, lowering the setting when the house is empty, and save money in the process. Modern thermostats let you monitor the indoor temperature of your home via your smart phone or online. By keeping the temperature low when no one is home and programming the thermostat to increase the temperature when everyone returns, you could notice a 10 percent drop in your heating costs. Fall is also an ideal time to ensure

your furnace is functioning optimally. Schedule an appointment for a professional to inspect and clean your furnace once a year. By doing so, you’ll help your furnace function more effectively and last longer. If ice damming on the roof is an annual problem, consider taking measures to reduce the risk of ice dams forming. Major damage can result from ice damming, so it’s never too early to start thinking about a long-term solution. Ice damming occurs when warm, indoor air escaping through the roof melts snow on the shingles. The water then refreezes as it runs off the roof, creating a barrier of ice at the edge. Shovelling snow or chipping ice away can threaten life, limb and roof, so it’s best to consider more permanent solutions. While caulking or weather-stripping can help address the gaps allowing the air to escape, proper air sealing insulation and attic venting are the best methods to stop ice damming from occurring. Spray foam insulation is one modern material that both insulates and seals to

reduce the risk of ice damming. Installed by professionals, spray foam insulation, like that available from Icynene, works well in all climates to limit air leakage and help maintain an even, comfortable temperature in the living areas of a home. As a long-term solution, spray foam insulation helps maintain a comfortable temperature year round while helping to control monthly heating and cooling expenses. Thanks to spray foam insulation’s air-sealing qualities, homeowners can reduce the size of their heating and cooling equipment since less effort is required to heat or cool the home. While air leakage can cause heating and cooling bills to jump and ice damming to occur, a well-insulated home and economical winterizing can help you get through the cold winter months. Spray foam insulation is not a DIY product, so it’s important to ensure that you work with a trained and licensed spray foam contractor to ensure that the foam is installed safely and properly. A licensed professional will walk you

through the process from beginning to end and give you confidence that you’ve invested in a high performance energy efficient solution that pays back year over year in savings. Icynene recently released a comprehensive home insulation mobile app, available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, to allow homeowners understand where air leaks can occur in their home as well as how a modern insulation material like spray foam can help make a difference.

3 pre-winter lawn care pointers By Metro Creative Winter weather can be harsh, especially on lawns. Homeowners who spend much of spring and summer tending to their lawns may fear the impact that winter will have on their once-lush landscapes, making the fall a great time to fortify lawns against any harsh conditions to come. Homeowners must take grass type into consideration before taking steps to prepare their lawns for the winter. Some grasses are best fertilized in late-summer, while others should be fertilized in autumn. Cool-season grasses, including fescue and bluegrass, are best fertilized sometime between the months of September and November. Warm-season grasses, such as Bermuda or zoysia, should be fertilized between July and September. Once homeowners have gained a greater understanding of their lawns, they can begin exploring the various ways to prepare their lawns for

whatever winter has in store. 1. Explore winterizing fertilizers. Homeowners who want to make their grasses more winter hardy can consult landscaping professionals to determine if winterizing fertilizers will work for their lawns. These specially formulated fertilizers, many of which are made exclusively for cool-season grasses, contain higher levels of potassium and lower levels of nitrogen than early-season fertilizers. Potassium helps strengthen and harden plants, and cool-season grasses may need extra potassium as winter settles in. Mike Geist, hardware manager at Menards in Mitchell, said winter fertilizer, or fall lawn food, helps grass come back greener in spring when it comes out of winter dormancy. “Your grass is going to kind of go dormant for the winter, so it basically has the nutrients so that way it helps with root growth and keeping it healthy and disease-free,” Geist said. “If you’re into a

fertilizing regime where you’ve been fertilizing all spring, summer and into the fall, then it definitely doesn’t hurt.” Homeowners who are not sure if they should apply winterizing fertilizer can conduct soil tests to determine the potassium levels in their soil. If the test indicates the soil has sufficient potassium, then applying a winterizing fertilizer is likely unnecessary. In addition, homeowners who have fed their lawn a balance of nutrients throughout spring and summer likely will not need to apply winterizing fertilizer. 2. Get rid of fallen leaves. While fallen leaves may be integral components of idyllic autumn landscapes, leaves left on the lawn throughout the winter may lead to disease in the grass. Leaves trap moisture and block sunlight and air from reaching grass, and that can encourage the development of dis-

ease. In addition, leaves can harbor insects that also may contribute to disease. While it might seem like common sense to delay leaf removal until the end of autumn when all the leaves have fallen, that, too, can prove harmful to lawns. Leaves left laying on lawns for long periods of time can contribute to the same types of damage as leaves left on the lawn throughout winter, so do your best to remove leaves as they fall. 3. Take steps to fight snow mold. Homeowners who live in regions where snow falls into spring or where spring tends to be cold and damp may want to take steps to prevent snow mold. Gray snow mold typically looks fuzzy and gray, and lawns infested with snow mold may develop unsightly gray or brown spots indicative of dead grass. Pink snow mold may be even worse than gray snow mold because pink mold attacks the roots as well as the leaves. To prevent snow mold, continue mowing into the fall, even as lawns grow dormant, clearing the lawn of grass clippings and leaves after each mow. Thick lawns may provide a breeding ground for snow mold, so homeowners whose lawns have a history of developing snow mold may benefit from mowing their lawns into the fall. Winter is rarely easy on lawns, but homeowners can take several steps to prepare their lawns for potentially harsh winter weather.

By Metro Creative Apple pie, pumpkins and blooming chrysanthemums are symbols of autumn. But nothing signals the arrival of fall more than the millions of leaves that begin to cascade from the trees as the temperatures dip. Many people feel nothing is more beautiful than the yellow, red, purple, and orange leaves that coat neighborhoods and countrysides each fall. But in spite of their beauty, leaves might be a nuisance to homeowners tasked with removing the growing piles of them from their lawns. Those with large oak and maple trees in front of their homes understand the seemingly endless work of leaf removal. As the days begin to grow shorter and colder, these changes trigger a hormone release in trees, prompting them to drop their leaves. This chemical message causes the formation of abscission cells where

the leaf stem meets the branch, say botanists at the Missouri Botanical Garden. So rather than merely dropping off of trees when the wind blows, the leaves actually fall off deliberately. Left untouched, fallen leaves can contribute to lawn problems such as poor aeration, mold growth and moisture issues. Leaves also can cause staining on driveways and walkways. Prompt removal can help prevent any problems. To make faster and easier work of leaf removal, keep these tips in mind. • Mow over thin leaf coverage. If only a few leaves have fallen, use a mulching mower to shred the leaves until they are small enough that they wonÕt suffocate the lawn. The small pieces will decompose in the lawn, reintroducing nutrients as a result.

Whether you are planning to do it yourself or hire a professional, smart digging means getting your underground utility lines marked before you start. Digging without calling can disrupt service or harm you and those around you. Look up and live. Know the location of all overhead power lines, power lines near trees and avoid flying kites close to power lines. Keep yourself and anything you are handling at least 10 feet from power lines.

CLEANUP Continued from Page 16

• Use an ergonomic leaf rake. Ergonomic rakes can prevent back and arm pain, much in the way that ergonomic shovels do when shoveling snow. • Invest in a quality leaf blower. Using a rake is good exercise, but homeowners with large properties might want to use a leaf blower. These machines can dislodge leaves from bushes and hard-to-reach crevices, and they work faster than rakes. • Use a tarp. Rake or blow leaves onto a tarp and then drag the tarp to the curbside or to the back of a truck for proper disposal. Special leaf scoopers enable you to grab more leaves if they need to be picked up and transported. Otherwise, you can use the covers from two garbage pails to achieve a similar effect. • Work with the wind. Rake in the direction the wind is blowing and downhill if your property slopes. This way it will be easier on you, and you wonÕt be working against Mother Nature. • Spread out the job. Do not attempt to remove all fallen leaves in a single day. Schedule a few cleaning days during the season to make lighter work of the job than if you tried to do it all at once. Keep in mind that leaves will continue to fall throughout the season and you may need to spend a few days removing leaves from your yard. Removing leaves is a large part of fall home maintenance. Employ these tips to make this task less strenuous. Metro Creative photo

5 top trends in container gardening By Brandpoint Gardening is a peaceful activity that eases tension, reduces overall stress and promotes longevity. One longterm study found that daily gardening reduces the risk for both dementia and Alzheimer's disease. With all of these benefits, there are ample reasons why people of all ages and lifestyles should start digging in the dirt. You don't need a big yard or lots of room to enjoy a beautiful garden. With so many options for indoor and outdoor container gardening, there's no limit on the number of gardens you can have. Container gardening is a great way to color up a small space, add depth and height to your yard or easily change up the look of your patio. No matter your skill level, enjoy the benefits of gardening with these container trends: Foliage gardens Foliage plants are no longer just accessories for your small space garden. You can create an entire display simply out of rich, colorful foliage plants. Fountain grass, papyrus, vinca and grassy rush are all great additions for adding vibrancy to your container garden. Mix and match with various textures to find a unique display that speaks to you. Petunia tower A petunia tower is a great way to add an unexpected

element to your container garden collection. A flower tower is easy to make and sun-loving Tidal Wave Petunias will bloom all season long on a patio, deck or pool area. You will need only three Tidal Wave plants. The Red Velour have great color and texture and make a strong statement. Plant them with good potting soil into a 10 to 12 inch wide plastic nursing pot. Place a three-foot metal tomato cage into the pot. The cage should be as wide at the bottom as it is on the top. Now slip the entire plastic pot into a glazed pot that's about one to four inches wider, and voila! Hanging baskets Hanging flower baskets bring your plants to eye-level, where everyone can enjoy their wonderful scents and sights. Add beauty to an otherwise dull porch, wall or rafters. Try planting succulents for a virtually care-free container garden. Petunias, calibrachoa and pansies also make wonderful additions to hanging baskets. Combination containers Who says your container garden can only have one plant? Get creative and play with different color and texture combinations of plants and flowers. You can make up your own mix or search online for combo recipes by other inspiring gardeners. Mix foliage with flowers and use a color scheme to build a balanced and beautiful container.

Indoor container gardening Take your favorite hobby inside. Even if you have a small apartment, there's no need to rule out house plants. Find the best place for each plant, depending on their light requirements. Don't be afraid to experiment and try different locations until you find the best spot for your indoor containers. For sun-loving plants, just be sure to place them on a windowsill for maximum light exposure. With so many options and room for creativity, container gardening is a trend that's here to stay. Tap into your inventive side to build a container garden that brings joy and wellness both indoors and out.
