enough about the dedication and work he’s put in.” Nelson led the Kernel offense with 127 carries for 427 yards and seven touchdowns, while completing 54 of 129 passes for 752 yards and four touchdowns. Nelson also threw six interceptions last year. Joining Nelson on offense will be junior running back Spencer Neugebauer and wide receivers Reed Overweg, a junior, and senior Justin Syring. “We want to put guys in the best situations possible,” said VanOverschelde, who added more players will continue to stand out as offensive threats as practice continues. “It’s amazing to see the transition in high school athletes from sophomores learning the ropes into juniors and seniors leading the team.” Having lost to Harrisburg twice last season, including a 33-6 loss that ended Mitchell’s season, VanOverschelde said his team is gearing up for revenge on the Tigers in the season opener. “We had to go there twice last year and lose, but this year we will have had that experience already,” VanOverschelde said. “We need to work on execution on both sides of the ball and stay healthy. I’m looking forward to a very competitive ESD season.”

The Mitchell High School football team was working to find its indenity before the 2015 season kicked off. “We have a group of really focused kids and they will find their identity,” MHS head coach Kent VanOverschelde said. “Finding that identity is important, and if you can do that early you can get some initial success. We are going to work to find that identity and we are going to move forward each day.” VanOverschelde said he had 44 players grades 10 to 12 and the team is up to 75 players with grades 9 to 12. “We’re very excited about our numbers, because we are going to have some depth and get a lot reps in,” VanOverschelde said. “That’s a big freshman group and a big junior group.” Mitchell finished last season with a record of 3-5, but the Kernels ended the regular season with wins over Watertown and Huron, before falling to Harrisburg in the playoffs. VanOverschelde said the team came out to the first practice ready to work hard. “I’m very happy with the blue-collar attitude that the kids

will be senior quarterback Kanin Nelson. This will be Nelson’s fourth season under center for Mitchell and VanOverschelde said the South Dakota State recruit is ready to end his final season as a Kernel on a high

DWU volleyball ready for rebound season Optimism is building in Lindsay Wilber’s second year as head coach of the Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball program. After coming off a 8-21 (1-15 in Great Plains Athletic Conference play) record, Wilber said she’s confident that her team — which returns most of its players from last year — will improve its record in 2015. “I think that I’ve learned a lot in my first year,” Wilber said. “We have a lot of the same players back from last year, so preseason has gone smoothly. They know

what drills I want to run, they’ve come to camp in shape. It’s really exciting to see the progression so far. It’s leaps and bounds ahead of where we were last year.” According to Wilber, having a year of experience under her belt increases the team’s confidence. “It makes it so much easier now that they know my coaching style and I know what I need to work on with them,” Wilber said. DWU will be led by junior outside hitter Lauren Tadlock, who had a team-leading 345 kills last season and 35 blocks. She was an All-GPAC honorable mention. “She’s a six-rotation player,”

Wilber said. “She’s just kind of our player that does everything for us. She passes, she plays defense, she puts the ball away and terminates when she needs to. She really worked hard in the offseason. She’s looked pretty good this preseason.” The Tigers’ other All-GPAC hon-

tor in blocking and hitting.” However, the Tigers will be without redshirt junior middle hitter Mallory Jark (who led the team in blocks with 82 and had 241 kills), as she tore her ACL. But that won’t temper Wilber’s expectations for her team. “I have high expectations, just like I did last year,” she said. “The wins weren’t where I wanted them to be last year, but we really improved and had some close matches. We just didn’t win them. We made great strides, so I hope we can keep improving and pick up some more wins. We all know it’s a process.”

orable from last year, junior setter Michelle Van Epps, returns after leading the team with 1,135 assists last season. “She’s gotten to know the girls more,” Wilber said. “She’s a really good commander of the offense.” Senior libero Maggie Stehly is also expected to contribute to the Tigers, along with redshirt junior middle hitter Sammy Fluck (who had 193 kills and 60 blocks last year). “(Maggie is) looking to break some records at DWU with digs,” Wilber said. “She’s come in shape and ready to go. “(Sammy) can be a big contribu-

After losing four seniors to graduation, the Mitchell Christian volleyball team will look a lot different this season. First-year head coach Chris Nemec takes over the program that went 14-13 last season and returns two starters in senior Emily Reynen and junior Abbie Reynen. “In our first match, we’re just going to be looking to get some chemistry going on the floor,” Nemec said. “We have a great group and we have two strong starters returning.” Emily Reynen led the Golden Eagle attack last season and Nemec said he will count on her to be a

a season-ending injury in basketball. “Abbie recovered from her injury and she’s just looking to get some confidence going,” Nemec said. “She has a great attitude.” Nemec is in his first year coaching volleyball at MCS. He took over for Shelby Thomas and said he’s enjoyed learning his new role. “It’s been exciting and the kids have been great,” Nemec said. “We’ve all been learning, but we’re coming together nicely.”

Mitchell volleyball team mixes experience and youth By ERIC MAYER The Daily Republic

A new freshmen class highlights the Mitchell High School volleyball team this season. Mitchell will carry eight freshmen on the varsity roster, which is the most head coach Deb Thill has had since 1991. “I haven’t had this many freshmen playing up,” Thill said. “Their skill level is high, but competing in varsity volleyball at the ESD level is a whole different level.” The incoming freshmen will join seven returning letterwinners to form a strong team of experience and youth. “We have a really nice mix of returning players,” said Thill, before the team held a jamboree with volleyball players from Mount Vernon/Plankinton on Tuesday. “We also have a really nice incoming freshman class that we hope to mix together.” Mitchell’s three seniors — Ally Goldammer, Brenna Morgan and McKenzie Kotrba — will all be captains for the Kernels this year. Goldammer led the Kernels with 182 kills and 30 blocks last season. The All-Eastern South Dakota Conference honorable mention player also added 14 aces, 39 digs and 3 assists.

Thill said all three of the seniors will be counted on to provide leadership for the Kernels. “Each one of them bring

and has only had one practice as a team, but the excitement of a fresh start stood out for Goldammer. “We’re excited for a whole

new team and a fresh start,” Goldammer said. “We’re all excited and we will be ready.” The Kernels finished 2014 with a record of 3-19 and fell to the Pierre Governors in the District 3AA elimination game. This season, Thill said she expects the Kernels to be more competitive in the tough ESD conference. “Our goal in the first half of our season will be to compete with everyone,” Thill said. “In the second half, we will want to beat everyone.” Before Mitchell takes the court, Thill said the team has plenty to work on. “Communication is huge in volleyball and that’s something we will continue work on, but I think we’ve been pretty good at that,” Thill said. “We have some strong hitters and passers, but we will still need to keep developing those skills throughout the season.” Serving the ball and returning other team’s service will also be a focus point for the Kernels. “We want to work on pursuit of the ball and on serving,” Thill said. “If you can serve the ball aggressively and serve receive well, you are going to be successful.”

The Mitchell High School boys golf team worked hard in the summer, and according to head coach Mark Horan, it’s already paying off. “We have five solid returning letterwinners,” Horan said. “It’s a group that has worked as hard in the summer as any group as I’ve had before. They all improved. I think we’re

scorewise for us will be Cade Carpenter,” Horan said. “He’s done all the things he’s supposed to do. He’s played in tournaments all summer and constantly worked on his game.” In addition to Carpenter, Horan said Ryan Solberg, Kyle Biggerstaff, Sam Mock and Ethan Huber could all make big contributions this season for the Kernels.

going to be very competitive this year.” Last season, Mitchell finished seventh (out of 13) as a team at the state tournament, shooting a combined 655. The Kernels will be led by returning All-ESD team member and junior Cade Carpenter. Carpenter finished 35th individually at state last season, shooting a 169. “Our number one player

Mitchell head softball coach Jim Misiaszek doesn’t care how his team starts, as long as it finishes strong. At least, that’s the message he’s relayed to his players. “What I want these girls to do is play their best softball in October,” Misiaszek said. “That’s what we strive for every year. Everyone makes the state tournament, and in October we get after each other. Our goal every year never changes, and that’s to compete for a state championship. This team has the talent to do that. We have great senior leadership.” Morgan Weber returns as one of Mitchell’s top hitters. Weber hit .323, while Tori Misiaszek hit

.325 as eighth-grader last year. Jayci Hinker batted .309 for the Kernels last year and Hinker and Weber were both named All-State honorable mention. On the mound, Mitchell is led by Andrea Konz. Konz took the loss for Mitchell in Game 1 against Roosevelt, but went 2-for-2 with an RBI in Game 2. “Andrea Konz is going to get most of the innings for us this year,” Misiaszek said.

N ew coach lead s Mitchell boy s soccer team By ERIC MAYER The Daily Republic

The Mitchell High School boys soccer team returns a strong core for the 2015 season. Under new head coach Ken Novak, the Kernels’ returning players will play a key role. “One of our strengths is our chemistry,” Novak said. “The team gets along real well together and we have some seasoned players out here as well.” Novak previously helped coach the Mitchell junior varsity team in the past and he takes over the program from Jason Wear who coached both the boys and girls varsity teams last year. “It’s been wonderful, they are a fantastic group,” Novak said about how his first season as the head

very hard-working.” Mitchell finished the season with a 3-10 record

coach has gone so far. “One of the best things about the team is they are

last year, but Novak said the team isn’t focused on wins and losses.

“Right now we are just focused on what needs to be done on the tactical level,” Novak said. “One of the things I emphasis the most is vision. Soccer is played with the feet, but so much can be done with the eyes. I want the team to see the opportunities and see where the ball should be.” The Kernels lost last year’s top scorer in Isaac Novak to graduation. Novak scored five of the team’s 13 goals last year, but Mitchell will look to its three seniors for leadership this season. Caleb Larson returns for his senior season as a returning captain. Larson joins Croix Erickson and Patrick Zapf as the team’s three seniors. “Caleb is a major contributor not just because of his technical skills

and tactical wisdom, but because he’s a great leader,” said Novak, who added Erickson and Zapf will play big roles for the Kernels this season. “He has really matured over the years to step up to this role.” Seth Paulson, Kelby Escobin and goalie Luke Novak, who had 143 saves last year, for Mitchell return as juniors that gained plenty of experience last year. Novak said the team has worked hard in practice and he expects to see that hard work pay off over the course of the season. “I think the team takes stewardship over each other and each other’s training,” Novak said. “I’ve been really happy with the character of the young men out here.”

Young, energetic MCS cross country team set for season it’s like we can jump ahead in the season a little bit,” Miedema said. “We’re farther ahead than where I thought we would be and that will help down the line.” With low numbers, Miedema is focused on keeping the MCS team healthy throughout the season, saying the key will be to push the young runners to new heights, but also know their limits. “We just want to make sure that we keep on improving so we reach our peak at the right moment in the season and stay

injury-free. We want to push hard, but we want to be smart about it, too,” Miedema said. The team has been led early by its lone senior Zach Buche. “He’s always positive, always has a great attitude and will push his team to the fullest and displays good leadership,” Miedema said. “He’s a good role model to follow.” Also stepping up as a leader for the MCS team is freshman Alec Nelson, the lone state qualifier from last year’s squad. “(Nelson) has a great work ethic and will have a lot of

opportunities to improve as the season progresses. He’ll be fun to watch,” Miedema said. Miedema said the rest of the team has followed in Nelson and Buche’s footsteps, demonstrating a high-quality work ethic, making him optimistic for the upcoming season. “They’re hard workers and very self-motivated. I have a love for this sport and for coaching these kids,” Miedema said. “They’re very delightful and coachable group and I can’t get enough of them, and what they’re going to do this season.”

Youth-laden, but energetic and enthusiastic, the Mitchell Christian cross country team is poised to gain experience and be competitive this season. Made up of a mix of four freshmen, four seventh graders, one freshman and one senior, the team has put its focus on improving in practice every day. “With the youth that we have, when we’re running, a couple things that I like to focus on is giving 110 percent every day to improve, mental toughness and

I think my biggest goal for them is to just gain experience,” MCS head coach Mark Miedema said. “Getting that experience will be huge for us.” Miedema said leading up to the team’s first meet he has seen several of his 10 junior high and high school athletes log an abundance of summer miles. He said the athletes didn’t begin the official season practices trying to get in shape — they were already in shape and ready to build off of that. “It’s awesome, because now that we have officially started,

Christian Buhler said a lot of people didn’t think the Mitchell Christian/Mount Vernon/Sanborn Central boys soccer team was going to field a team this year. The team was fighting low numbers at the beginning of last season with only 14 players, but now the team is down to 11 or 12 kids depending on what other activities are going on. Eleven players are needed to field a full team on the field without any subs in soccer. “It’s been an uphill battle,” said Buhler, who took over as the team’s head coach after Bob Lemon

stepped down as coach. “It’s a commitment thing and a lot of our players are dual-sport athletes.” The team has one player from Mount Vernon and one player from Sanborn Central with the rest of the team coming from Mitchell Christian. “The kids have a lot of heart and they’re always wanting to be out here,” Buhler said. “Even when we only have 10 players, they kids are always saying ‘We have to go out there, we have to play’. They are always giving it their all.” Bailey Morgan, Riley Shields and Tyler Johnson are the three seniors on the team. Buhler said junior

Tanner Jorgensen has also been a team leader. “He’s really just a student of the game,” Buhler said of Jorgensen. “He comes out here and leads practices when he needs to and thinks of different formations for us.” MC/MV/SC has started the season with five losses, but Buhler said the team is focused on playing every game on their schedule as well as helping the younger players develop. “I’m really proud of them. This is a season to develop younger players,” Buhler said. “Hopefully, we can get some new kids interested to join us next year.”

Kernel girls soccer team returns a lot of experience By ERIC MAYER The Daily Republic

The Mitchell High School varsity girls soccer will have a lot of familiar faces on the field this season. Mitchell, which finished last season 3-91, enters the 2015 season missing only one player from last year’s squad. “We lost a key player from last year, but it was only one player, so I basically have my entire varsity team returning,” Mitchell head coach Jason Wear said after the Kernels’ practice Tuesday. “The nice thing is that we get to continue to build on the success we had at the end of the last season.” The Kernels ended 2014 on a high note as the team played some of its best soccer in the final games. Mitchell went 3-1-1 in its final five games after starting the season 0-8. “We know what we can do because we finished strong last year,” Wear said. “We have a returning team and five strong leaders.”

While the Kernels will miss last year’s leading goal scorer Emily Paulson, Mitchell will look for its five seniors to help lead the team. Seniors Erin Farnham, Kristin Pistulka, Bailey Hohn, Challie Jones and Kayla Stangeland bring plenty of leadership and game experience. “All five of those girls have played on the same team for years,” said Wear, who added each senior received votes for team captains. “They know it’s their senior year and for most of them, they know it’s their last season and it means something to them and they are really working hard.” Farnham, Pistulka and Stangeland were voted as team captains on Tuesday night. Stangeland finished second on the team in scoring last year with four goals, while Pistulka recorded 174 saves as the Kernels’ goalkeeper last year. “This group has so many different coaches and it’s hard to learn a new system every year,” Wear said. “We are continuing a scheme we built last year and we’re trying to get the ball to key players.”

Mitchell cross country determined to rebuild By GARRICK HODGE The Daily Republic

The Mitchell High School cross country team is determined to rebuild its program. “The kids will be respected and that’s the good thing about it,” said firstyear head coach Keith Christensen. “We used to pull up to meets and the other teams would say ‘Thank god Mitchell is here, somebody will get last.’ But after a year or two, they’ll say ‘Gosh, why did Mitchell have to come to this meet?’ That’s the goal at least.” After limited numbers last season, the Kernels have 52 runners out for the team in 2015. Twenty-two athletes are from Mitchell High School, and 30 are middle school athletes. According to Christensen, getting middle school athletes out for cross country is essential for the program. “I’m excited (about having 52 runners out this year),” Christensen said. “That’s what we’re going to need to do if we’re going to have a competitive cross country team at Mitchell.” According to Christensen,

his athletes are already taking the steps necessary to mold themselves into ESD contenders. “They’re coming here every day and doing what I ask them to do,” he said. “They have to become a team, and can’t think ‘I’m the best runner in Mitchell’ and have that be enough, because how many guys

from Brandon can beat you? It’s not good enough to be local, you have to be good at a higher level.” The boys side is led by senior Riley Cowins, who finished 11th at the ESD meet last season and took 54th at the state meet with a time of 17 minutes, 46.08 seconds. “He’s our leader and most

gifted runner at this time,” Christensen said. “Riley has been through the wars, he’s been in ESD and state running for a long time. He’s focused, committed and a tough kid. He can do the work, so a lot of it will be mental.” Cowins acknowledged he has high expectations for himself.

“I want to win the ESD meet,” he said. “Last year I improved to get 11th, (after) I got 32nd (the year before). This year, I’m heading for No. 1. I’m just trying to improve on my time, and I’d like to be all-state at the state meet, which is getting in the top-25.” An all-conference selection from last season,

Cowins is a team captain along with seniors Caleb Larson and Coby Lee. Larson finished 66th at the state meet in 2014 with a 17:51.30, while Lee took 103rd with a 19:14.59. Freshmen Gage Nelson, Caleb Lee and Carson Max could also see improved times for the Kernels. On the girls side, Mitchell is led by team captains senior Kaelyn Kaul and junior Mary Krause. Krause finished 34th at state with a 16:12.60, while Kaul took 94th with a 17:29.47. “I’d like to improve in general with getting better times,” Kaul said. “For the team, I hope we can move our slower runners up. It’s not just about the first couple of runners, we hope that we can get some of the lower runners to get higher scores so our team can do better overall.” Freshmen Tyann Hart (who took 63rd in the state meet last year with a 16:51.10), Ashlyn Kaul, Edana Mahrt and sophomores Kaylee Hart an Jazmyn Brinkman hope to bolster the depth of the Kernels.

Young Kernel girls tennis team eager to earn experience Mitchell lost four seniors and returns three varsity players this season By GARRICK HODGE The Daily Republic

The Mitchell High School tennis team is going to have to rely on underclassmen this season. The Kernels lost four varsity players from a year ago, and have three returning letterwinners for the 2015 season. “We’re a young team this

year,” Kernels head coach Pat Moller said. “We don’t have any seniors. It will be interesting to see where we’re at this season.” The Kernels will be led by sophomore Sammy Pooley, who will play No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. “Hopefully she can use her experience to play even better this year,” Moller said.

Meanwhile, Avery Larson, a freshman, will team up with Pooley at No. 1 doubles and play No. 2 singles for the Kernels. “So far, she’s looking really strong for as young as she is,” Moller said. “I’m impressed with how she’s hitting the ball and I can’t wait to see what she does at No. 2.”

Another returning letterwinner is No. 3 singles player Kaihlen Smith who played No. 7 singles last year. Smith was back and forth between JV and Varsity in 2014. She will play No. 2 doubles as well. “Going to No. 7 to No. 3 will be a big jump,” Moller said. “But she’s eager.” At No. 4 singles and No. 2

doubles will be eighth grader Kelsey Dahme. “She’s really young, but this girl has a lot of potential and she’s going to get plenty of experience,” Moller said. Marissa Moller will play No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles, and Madison Bohlen is the No. 6 singles player and No. 3 doubles player.

Seahawks take on 11-man football, Bon Homme starts 9-man Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan football team ready for a new challenge this season

Bon Homme learning the 9-man game Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan isn’t the only football team that will experience something new this season. The Bon Homme Cavaliers dropped down from Class 11B to join Class 9AA this season. Bon Homme head coach Byron Pudwill is experiencing learning the opposite of what BridgewaterEmery/Ethan head coach Jeff VanLeur is learning about the differences between 11-man and 9-man football. “The biggest thing is defensively, there are two fewer guys on the field,” said Pudwill, who has coached 11-man football for 32 years. “Until you experience it, you feel like it’s no big deal, and now it seems like every scheme we try, we feel short. I can see why all the scores were so high in 9-man games, but we’re going to get it figured out.” For Bon Homme, 9-man football also allows for the team to play

ETHAN — Jeff VanLeur has been coaching high school football for 36 years. For the first time in the Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan head coach’s career, he’ll have 11 players on the field during a game. Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan’s male student enrollment is more than 56, which is the cutoff between 11-man and 9-man football classes, as determined by the South Dakota High School Activities Association. “We looked at it as a challenge and we’re excited about making the move up and playing 11-man football,” VanLeur said. “We’ve never done it before, so it’s a new challenge. We just want to play some football.” The Seahawks joined Region 3, pairing them with Chamberlain, Parkston, Wagner and Winner in Class 11B this season. “It’s a new game and I think the biggest thing is offensively, it’s harder to score,” VanLeur said. “The 9-man game is a lot more wide-open, so we are going to have to make some adjustments.” VanLeur has had a lot of success coaching at the 9-man level, winning more than 200 games, six

state championships and one runner-up finish since the 9AA class was created in 1999. The jump up to 11-man football has put a challenge on both the players and coaches, but VanLeur said coaches around the state have been more than helpful in educating VanLeur and his staff in adjusting to 11-man football. “I think the field is more wide open in 9-man,” VanLeur said. “Now, there are two more guys on the field and I’ve been telling the kids, when you are down 14 points in 9-man football, it’s not that big of deal, but in 11-man football, in the third and fourth quarter, it gets that much harder to score.” Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan finished 2014 with a record of 4-5 and were eliminated by Kimball/ White Lake in the first round of the playoffs. VanLeur said the kids are excited to get on the field to start the season. “We get two more kids on the field and they’re excited about it,” VanLeur said. “They want to step in, see some things and see what we can put together.” While the team won’t know what to expect until the first game, VanLeur said at the end of the day, football is football, wheth-

Our line is going to need to play well early to allow our skill position kids to gain experience and confidence. We have great numbers of kids out for football. I believe we will have quite a bit of competition for several positions on the field and the kids are aware of that. That means the kids will need to work hard in the offseason to be prepared to win playing time.

Coach’s comments: We will be talented, but very young. We have four seniors, compared to 10 last year. We will need our younger players to fill some big shoes on Friday nights this season, but have a good pool of talent to choose from. We will have a very challenging schedule starting with Hanson in week 0, and continuing with teams such as Bon Homme, Wosley-Wessington and WWSSC, but are looking forward to it and are excited for the challenge.

Freeman High School will not have a football team for the next two years. The decision was made at a school board meeting last month, with the vote being unanimous 4-0. Low numbers have been a problem for Freeman football in recent years. If the board voted to field a team this season, the Flyers would only have 10 players available. “It was decided for the health and safety of the 10 kids involved we couldn’t realistically make it through a full regular season eightgame schedule,” Freeman athletic director Don Hotchkiss said. The Flyers — who went 0-8 last season — had to forfeit a game in 2014 to Canistota because injuries left Freeman with only 10 players on the roster after starting the season with 12.

ficult to find a co-op partner because it would likely move both schools up in classification. For the 10 players on the Flyer roster, the news was pretty disappointing to hear. “We have four seniors that are very disappointed,” Hotchkiss said. “If you asked every one of those young men, I’m sure they’d say they are disappointed. But they also know that it would be unrealistic to complete a full regular season with 10 guys.” He added that it will also be a difficult time for the community to adjust without Friday night football. “It’ll be a little different for everyone in the community,” Hotchkiss said. “We’ve always had good support. There will be some disappointment and emptiness involved for everyone in the community.”

From here, Hotchkiss said the Flyers have several options on the table moving forward. The Flyers can either attempt to find a school to co-op with, or try and find enough players to field a team on their own for the 2017 season. “Hopefully, we can find a co-op or have enough kids that want to play and have our own program,” Hotchkiss said. “We’re optimistic we will figure it out at some point.” Freeman tried to co-op with Menno/Marion for the 2015 season, but the Flyers’ request was denied at a board meeting on April 13. The Flyers have also attempted to co-op with Canistota in the past, but the request was denied by the South Dakota High School Activities Association. Hotchkiss said it’s been dif-

Graduating six seniors means the door is open for any player willing to work hard and do what is best for the team, not the individual. Learning to play together with the new co-op will be the key to our success.

I think this is a very focused group of young ladies that have put in a lot of time in the offseason to prepare. These girls know there are opportunities out there and are committed to earn

I am excited to see who will step up and ďŹ ll the positions we need in the front row and the back row. I feel that this year’s team is going to be aggressive at the serving line, on defense and at the net. We don’t have a lot of height, but look to the WiLdKats to play big this season. DWU’s Gomez ‘overwhelmed’ with talent on golf teams By GARRICK HODGE The Daily Republic

When Chris G omez returned as the head coach as the Dakota Wesleyan U niversity men’s and women’s golf teams in the spring, he wasn’t positive what team he’d see. But after G omez — who previously coached the Tigers from 2001-2004 before becoming head golf coach at Wichita State U niversity — spent a few days with the men’s golf team, he couldn’t stop raving about its potential.

“I got here, and I was curious because I didn’t really know them,” G omez said. “I could look at the stat sheet all day long. But that doesn’t tell FITTS me a thing about the guys. But now that I have them here and I’ve seen the talent level and determination, I’m overwhelmed with what these guys bring. I have very high expectations on

this men’s side. Man, we could do a lot of things.” G omez said he expects Anthony Husher, a Winner native, Coleman Caldwell, a Chamberlain native, and Tyler Burr among others to have breakout years for the Tigers. O n the women’s side, the Tigers are coming off their seventh straight G reat P lains Athletic Conference Championship. “O f course I know the history,” G omez said. “It’s well documented, and I’ve been a part

of that history. I’ve got three freshmen that are working hard. I think they’re very excited to get some coaching. I hope I can help them in a lot of ways. Their attitude is awesome.” DWU is led by senior Lauren Fitts, who won the South Dakota G olf Association match play championship in J uly. Fitts is a three-time G P AC women’s golfer of the year selection and she finished in 15th place at the N AIA N ationals. “She’s worked hard and had success this summer,” G omez

said. “The state match play championship was the most phenomenal match play I’ve seen, she was gritty and had a lot of confidence. It’s not so much about the the physical activity, it was about her heart and mind, that’s how she pulled it out.” In addition to Fitts, G regory native Taylor Anshutz , April Barnett, Scotland native Aisha Abbink and Mitchell native K ristin Sabers hope to help the Tigers claim their eighth consecutive title.

Tiger football focused on making playoffs Fall Sports September, 2015

By GARRICK HODGE The Daily Republic

Dakota Wesleyan U niversity football is sick of not making the playoffs. After a 5-2 start for the Tigers, DWU went 2-2 in its final four contests to miss the N AIA playoffs in 2014. After DWU ’s fall camp completed with a scrimmage on Saturday, fourthyear head coach R oss Cimpl said his team isn’t settling for a 7-4 season in 2015. “We controlled our own destiny and didn’t take care of business,” Cimpl, whose team was projected to fi nish fourth in the G reat P lains Athletic Conference by the preseason coaches’ poll, said. “But this year, we have a mature group. O ur guys understand that every game is important. E very game that we play is the most important of the week, whether that’s the best team in the nation or worst team in the nation. We have to operate a certain way, regardless of who we’re playing.” The strength of the Tigers comes from a veteran defense, which returns a plethora of starters, led by senior linebacker Brady Bonte. Bonte led the team with 83 tackles ( 22 for a loss) in 2014 and also had five sacks, tying defensive lineman Brady Mudder for the team lead. “We feel great,” Bonte said. “With the leaders we have, everyone is picking it up pretty fast. We didn’t have to hold back and let anyone catch up in camp. O ur confidence is higher than it’s ever been after fall camp. With our outside linebackers playing so well, it really frees up the ground that the inside linebackers can cover.” Linebacker Adam Bormann ( 6 9 tackles, one sack) , Mudder ( 46 tackles, 11.5 for a loss) , defensive back J ared V an Winkle ( 6 8 tackles, three inter-ceptions) and Tanner Munk ( four interceptions, 73 tackles) are all returning starters that Cimpl hopes he can count on. “We’re pretty set right now,” he said. “But defensively, we’re going to have a

group of starters, but we’re going to try to play 15 to 20 guys every game. We have six guys on the D-line that we think can play, we have a good group of linebackers and three corners that are capable of starting. I hope our depth will allow us to stay fresh.” O ffensively, the Tigers will miss running back Francois Barnaud — DWU ’s all-time leading rusher — on the ground. Barnaud ran for 1,409 yards on 256 carries last season, scored 14 touchdowns and helped the offense average 23.6 points per game. R edshirt sophomore running back J ohn Fabriz ius is expected to start the season opener at running back, although Cimpl said G age Marshall and J onathon Withrow will see plenty of carries as well. Fabriz ius compiled 202 yards on 49 carries and scored a touchdown in 2014. “R ight now, J ohnny is our guy,” Cimpl said. “But we have a couple other guys that can step in. We’ll have for sure two, and maybe three and four other guys.” Cimpl has said that DWU will be a runfirst team, but when the Tigers decide to pass, they will rely on the arm of sophomore quarterback Dillon Turner. In his freshman season, Turner started all 11 games as he completed 154-of-306 passes for 1,741 yards and threw 13 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He also ran for 357 yards and eight touchdowns. “I feel a lot more comfortable,” Turner said. “G oing from Week 1 to Week 11 last year, I grew so much. G oing into this year I feel much more confi dent. I’m ready to go.” Catching passes from Turner will be junior wide receivers K odi Larson ( 34 receptions for 370 yards) and Dustin Livingston ( 28 catches for 303 yards and five touchdowns) among others. “I’m really excited,” Turner said. “We’ve been together all summer, so I know what they can do. I can just throw the ball up there and let them go get it, they make my job easy. I’m excited.”

In 2014, E vans threw for 518 yards and six touchdowns and picked up 26 5 yards and the ground as he scored three rushing touchdowns. E ntering the season, R hodes said how healthy his team stays will play a role in how successful the Cubs are in their first season playing in Class 11B. “We’re not bad up front, but we don’t have a lot of depth,” R hodes said. “If we stay healthy and work hard, I think we’ll be just fine.”

The Chamberlain Cubs will find out the difference between Class 11B and Class 11A football. Chamberlain is moving down from 11A to compete in Class 11B this season. The Cubs have competed in Class 11A since 2011. To be classified as an 11B school, male only enrollments at the high school must be under 100 and over 56 as determined by the South Dakota High School Activities Association. “( Class) 11B is very competitive and it has been traditionally competitive,” Chamberlain head coach J erry R hodes said. “( Class) 11A was also competitive, but we weighed the options and we thought in our best interest 11B would be what we want to do.” Chamberlain finished 5-5 last year in Class 11A, and R hodes said he’s looking forward to seeing if any differences arise. “We’ll see how it goes this year,” R hodes said. “N ot a lot will change, but this year our schedule will be a mix of 11A and 11B teams.”

Chamberlain has 13 letterwinners returning as well as six offensive starters and seven defensive starters returning. R hodes, who is entering his third year coaching Chamberlain, said the team is looking more and more ready to play each day. “The kids have picked up everything that we taught last year and we’re almost at full speed,” R hodes said. The Cubs form a region with P arkston, Winner, Bridgewater-E mery/E than and Wagner for the 2015 season. “I’m really excited and the kids are really excited for this season,” R hodes said. “We return basically everyone from last year. We don’t have a lot of depth, but we have a lot of experience coming back.” The biggest change for Chamberlain’s move down to Class 11B will be the schedule. The Cubs will play six 11B schools and three 11A schools this season.
