Kernel football will lean on defense early, often By Eric Mayer The Daily Republic Heading into the 2017 season, the Mitchell High School football team knows it should be able keep opponents out of the endzone. The Kernel defense, which returns five starters, will be one of the team’s strengths. Mitchell held opponents to 12.5 points per game last year and the unit will hope to
continue clamp down on opposing offenses. “We are going to have rely on them (the defense) heavily throughout the course of this season and early while we get the offense developed,” said MHS head coach Kent VanOverschelde. In the season opener Aug. 26 at Watertown, Mitchell forced two turnovers and held the Arrows to only seven points in a

21-7 win. With Briggs Havlik and Carson Max returning as starting linebackers as well as defensive linemen Kyle Foote, D.J. Krogman and Gregory Guthrie, VanOverschelde said the defense knows what it takes to be successful. Havlik and Max finished second and third in total tackles with 96 and 83, respectively, last season. Foote led the team with
eight sacks, while Guthrie had five sacks and Krogman had 3.5 sacks last year. “The great thing we’ve benefitted from is they know and understand their responsibilities,” VanOverschelde said. “There isn’t a lot of fancy, difficult schemes and our kids have that familiarity with it. It’s about playing forward and playing physical.”
MHS girls hoping to close in on ESD title By Marcus Traxler The Daily Republic The Mitchell High School girls tennis team has a trait every athletic team is looking for: experience. The Kernels bring back their top three players from a season ago and that could set the table for a successful 2017 campaign in which Mitchell likely will contend for the Eastern South Dakota Conference title. MHS was 41 points behind Watertown in the conference tournament race a year ago, finishing with 308 points to the
Arrows’ 349. That’s plenty of motivation in itself but Mitchell coach Pat Moller said his team is ready to take the next step. “I think the biggest advantage is our experience,” Moller said. “I think we’re going to be strong at doubles, especially at the top. Our weakness last year was probably not winning as many matches at the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 positions. I think that the girls have put in a lot of time in the offseason and they knew that this year could be a really good year

Moller, who is coaching the MHS girls for a seventh year, said
there’s never been a time for him when Pooley hasn’t been part of the program. “It’s going to be strange when you look out there next year and she’s not there,” Moller said. “She’s been our anchor for a long time.”

who coached at Mitchell Christian for 15 years, at the helm, the Kernels are hoping to build off a 4-8-1 record from last season. “This is a really exciting team to work with,” said Lemon, who takes over the team from Jason Wear, who coached the team the past three seasons. “I continually have to remind myself how young this team is. The future is really promising with this group and they’ve worked really hard.” The Kernels have a roster of 27 girls, which includes 15 returning letterwinners, four seniors and 13 freshmen. Sophomore Seemela Novak was an All-Eastern South Dakota Conference player last year for the Kernels. “The feeder programs that lead into this team have been really beneficial to the girls,” Lemon said about his large freshman class. “I’m really looking forward to see what they can do.” Lemon said many of his
players will play in a vari-

his 4-4-2 formation.

Excitement building for MHS cheer and dance teams By Eric Mayer The Daily Republic Heading into another season, both the Mitchell High School cheer and dance teams are focused on steadily improving. Both teams debuted new routines at the Watertown Invite last week and MHS dance coach Cassey VerHey said she’s been happy with what she’s seen early in the season. “We are doing really well and I’m proud of where we are at. The girls are working really hard,” VerHey said.
Large roster could bolster success for cheer team On the cheer side, Mitchell will have 24 girls competing, which head coach
Alisha Lockhart said is a big benefit for the Kernels. Lockhart noted the max number of girls competing in Class AA is 26 and Mitchell is only two girls shy of that number. “I’m pretty sure this is the largest squad we’ll ever have had on the floor,” Lockhart said. “It’s always nice to have some backups and the more numbers you have, the bigger your pyramid is and the more tricks you can do.” Last year, the team placed 13th at the state meet and the team has 10 returning letterwinners including 11 seniors. Early this season, Lockhart said the team is focused on being safe and getting timing down.

MHS boys soccer team seeking improvement By Eric Mayer The Daily Republic In the 2017 season, the Mitchell High School boys soccer team knows it will be facing an uphill battle. The Kernels lost 15 players from last year’s squad as 12 seniors graduated and three players moved away. Despite starting the season with a smaller team, Mitchell is still focused on improving from a one-win season a year ago. “Our numbers are less,
but I think the quality is really good,” Mitchell head coach Ken Novak said. “We have some really hard-working young men out here and I’m really looking forward to the season.” This is Novak’s third season as the head coach of the Kernels and he’s continuing his approach on improving communication on the field. “On the field, I always stress vision, vision and

vision. We want to see the field and see where the opportunities are,” Novak said. “This team communicates better than any team I’ve seen communicate and that really allows us to hit the seams and open spaces.” With 11 returning letterwinners on the team, Mitchell has plenty of varsity experience coming back. Last year, plenty of players got junior varsity experience as well and the JV team won its first game in more than five years. Novak pointed to senior Riley Kurtenbach and junior Mark Novak as two key leaders for the Kernels in 2017. “Riley has improved dramatically from last fall and I’m really excited about how well he finish-

es,” Novak said. “Hopefully we’ll see some balls in the back of the net from him.” Coach Novak added his team’s success will depend on how well his team controls the midfield and said a lot of that weight will fall on Mark Novak’s shoulders. “He’ll play a pivotal position for us as a No. 6. That means he’ll be a defensive midfielder,” Ken Novak said. “He’s the one keeping the pace of the game and moving the ball left to right as well as north and south.” Alongside Kurtenbach and Mark Novak, Cameron Gauger, a freshman, played varsity as an eighth grader. Gauger, Dante Davids, Micah Moen and Andrew Christiansen were mentioned as key contributors for the Kernels.

Horan added the team has taken a better mental approach, while also improving on the short game. “We’re looking for a pretty good year, but we’re young,” Horan said. By Marcus Traxler The Daily Republic The Mitchell High School cross country program remains in the process of a full-scale reboot. That is for frustrating coach Keith Christensen. Christensen, who is back at the helm of the Kernels’ runners for a third straight season, said he expected the Kernels to be further along in his rebuilding effort at this point. “It’s hard rebuilding and getting it going,” said Christensen, who has coached runners for 30

Eight upperclassmen fill Kernel roster
AREA FOOTBALL PREVIEWS
By Eric Mayer The Daily Republic There’s plenty of excitement surrounding the Mitchell High School softball team this season. With a roster of eight upperclassmen — one senior and seven juniors — MHS head coach Jim Misiaszek has high expectations for his team, which finished 5-19-1 last year. “For the most part, this group that I have is a two-year team and I’m really excited about that,” Misiaszek said about his 11-player varsity roster. “A lot of them have valuable experience

The most important thing for us is to stay injury free and have some linemen step up. We will have fewer kids out this year than we have since the ‘99 season, so we can’t afford to get anyone hurt due to our lack of depth.

I’m going to carry a very small varsity team for starters and see where this group is at.” One key returner for the Kernels is junior Tori Misiaszek, who led the team with a .406 batting average, 31 RBIs and four home runs — hitting three home runs in the state tournament last year. Fellow junior Hannah Sibson, who plays shortstop and catcher, hit .312, while Haley Linke hit .319 and McKenzie Miller hit .400 in limited action (25 at-bats).

I think I was looking for a quicker timetable than what’s actually been happening.” The Kernels’ main challenge has been retaining high school runners, with only a handful of runners in grades 9-12 on the boys and girls teams combined. “When we’ve got 700 kids in the high school and we’ve got nine high schoolers on the team, we can’t compete there. From Page 8 watch this season. We have many talented young ladies back with a lot of experience and leadership. We also have three talented athletes who joined our team this year. They will also play key roles for us. I am very excited to see the girls continue to raise the bar throughout the season to reach their goal.
Bon Homme Coach: Lindsey Fathke Conference: LMVC and SESD Record last year: 30-6 Top returnees: Brecken Bullard, 12, H; Rachel Sestak, 12, RH; Ciera Himes 10, OH; Emily Cap, 11, L; Macy Hajek, 11, RH; Alli Van Winkle 10, OH; Johanna Jelsma, 10, S. Top newcomers: Kenzie Carson, 9, MH; Jenae Alberts, 9, MH; Makayla Kelley, 9, OH; Sydney Mueller, 10, OH. Coach’s comments: It will be a fun year as we put together a new team. We will have a different look than last year, but will still compete.
Bridgewater-Emery Coach: Mary Ernster Years coaching: 2 Conference: Cornbelt Record last year: 12-12 Letterwinners returning: 12 Top returnees: Katelyn Kotas,
11, 5’6”, OH; Sydney Hoffman, 11, 5’11”, MH; Libby Bailey, 12, 5’2” Top newcomers: Sophia Potter 10, 5’6”, S; Haley Schulz, 10, 5’10”, MH; Jada Wethor, 11, 5’6”, OH; Kennedee Weber, 10, 5’7”, OH; Kerrigan Schultz, 9, 5’6”, S/ RH. Coach’s comments: As we look to the beginning of the 2017 season, our strengths are definitely our scrappy play and attitude and the experience of the many players that will be back this year. We feel that we can be very competitive this season and are excited to get the season started.
Burke/South Central Coach: Billie Jo Indahl Years coaching: 11 Conference: SCC-SESD Record last year: 19-11 Letterwinners returning: 11 Top returnees: Ryahna Schweigert, 12, 5’6”, DS; Teah Serr, 12, 5’6”, DS-OH; Santanya Mutcha, 12, 5’5”, L; Tressa Bull, 12, 5’11”. MH; Lahra Matucha, 11, 5’8”, OH; Taylee Indahl, 10, 5’8”, OH. Top newcomers: Shawntel Sharpfish, 12, 5’8”, OH-MH; Sierra Swan, 11, 5’11:, MH; Brecken Bartling, 11, 6’, MH; Lainee Schoenbaum, 10, 5’5”, DS; Bobbi Jo Wischmann, 9, 5’8”, OH. Coach’s comments: We are really looking forward to this season as we return all our starters except one, so we are bringing back players with lots of court experience and leader-
ship. The girls are very motivated and ready to get the season started. We ended our season again just shy of a state tournament appearance. The girls are ready to push themselves to get to the next level. With the Sweet 16 this year in Class B, it will be interesting to see how things play out. We hope to keep building on where we ended and hopefully reach our goal of getting to state. We return a lot of talent and feel we have a lot of great attributes this season.
Canistota Coach: Rebecca Smith Years coaching: 5 Conference: Cornbelt Record last year: 15-9 Letterwinners returning: 7 Top returnees: Cassidy Keller, 11, 5’2”, Libero, “Noelle Hofer, 11, 5’10”, middle; Kenzy Kirby, 11, 5’10”, outside; Jordan Engbrecht, 11, 5’9”, middle. Top newcomers: Tanner Hofer, 11, 5’6”, DS; Hanna Parry, 10, 5’7”, setter; Mindy Weidenbach, 11, 5’5”, DS. Coach’s comments: With four returning starters and a winning record last season we have high expectations. The team is really excited for this season to start.
Top returnees: Paige Reuer, 12, 5’10”, MH; Alayne Daly, 12, 5’8”, OH; Brenna Comfert, 12, 5’8”, OH; Izzy Tyrell, 12, 5’5”, Setter; Jamie Pazour, 12, 5’7”, libero; Makenzie Sorenson, 11, 5’6”, RH; Mady Handel, 11, 5’11”, OHMH; Avany Long, 11, 5’6”, OH. Top newcomers: Hannah Anderson. 10, 5’11”, MH; Maggy Pickner, 10, 5’11”, MH. Coach’s comments: We lost a lot of experience from our last years squad, but we do return some girls who saw a lot of court time last year. Paige Reuer is a four year starter and her experience is evident. She is a great leader and directs the team well. The juniors will have to step up to fill those spots. Jamie Pazour will be playing a new role as Libero, but she moves well and is a great communicator. Maggy Pickner and Hannah Anderson will have to gain confidence as the season goes to really demonstrate their hitting abilities.

Coach’s comments: The WiLdKats look to rebuild after losing six seniors. We have some young, talented, and very versatile players to fill key roles from last year’s team. They come with height and athleticism. We look to be an aggressive serving team this season with height at the net and a scrappy back row. Darby Deffenbaugh will lead defensively but will also be our vocal leader on the court; She and Hannah Surat will provide balance we need defensively; Sage Pulse and Carly Beckmann will add experience to a young front row and junior setter Heather Munsen returns to lead the offense. I look for this team to be young and exciting to watch. If they can develop the confidence to swing aggressively at the net, they have the ability to be a real contender this postseason

shown great leadership skills this summer and early in practice this year,” Van Zee said. “I’m hoping to see that continue throughout the season.” With district format now in the past in Class B volleyball, MCS will compete in Region 4B this season and the top two finishers will advance to the Sweet 16 state-qualifying round.
The home opener for MCS is scheduled for Sept. 7 against Sanborn Central/ Woonsocket. In preparation for the team’s first match, Van Zee said the team will need work on the fundamentals, adding the team’s lack of height will be tough to overcome. “It always comes down to the basics, working on rotation,” Van Zee said. “We’re able to pass the ball very well, but we have to work on the net.”

Coach’s comments: We added the Rapid City Invite on Sept. 11 to our schedule, the thought was that we will be running the State Meet in Rapid this year. On the girls side we lost our second and third place runners to graduation. We have girls with quite a bit of experience to replace them and four of them have experience of running at the state meet. We added the Rapid City Invite on Sept. 22 to our schedule this year. The thought was that we will be running the state meet in Rapid (City) this year. The top three (Class) A team finishers from the state meet last year were from the Hills region, so it will be nice to see where we sit with them a month before the state meet. As a team we look to repeat as Region 4A team champions. Sidda Schuyler will look to improve on her seventh-grade season and move closer to the top.

Van Zee said. “Hopefully, it’ll all go good. The girls have a good attitude and are excited.” MCS will have three seniors — Charlotte Haag, Katelyn Karhoff and Grace Garrels, while Maggie Reynen joins them as a returning letterwinner. “Charlotte and Katelyn have been with me since the beginning and they’ve

First-year coach among changes for MCS volleyball
001622746r1
By Eric Mayer The Daily Republic With only four returning letterwinners and a new head coach, the Mitchell Christian volleyball team knows this season will be focused on finding ways to improve. Cara Van Zee, a 2010 MCS graduate and assistant coach with the team for the past three seasons, takes over as the MCS head coach. Van Zee replaces Chris Nemec, who coached the team for the past two seasons. Van Zee said she’s very familiar with the Golden Eagles team that finished last season 2-22 and lost standout senior Kaitlyn Asmus. But Van Zee said she’s been pleased with how hard the team has been working early this season. “We have a young team so we’re going to do a lot of building this year,”
