Kernels eye semifinal berth in new-look Class 11AA

A

By Nick Sabato The Daily Republic

fter losing 25 seniors and 17 starters, Mitchell High School is undergoing a transformation on the football field, but that hasn’t tempered internal expectations. The Kernels have new play-callers on offense with the return of coordinator Joe Kramer and defense as head coach Kent VanOverschelde takes over with the resignation of longtime assistant Travis Carpenter. They also have a new quarterback in Austin Kerr and 11 new starters on offense from a 4-6 2018 squad. Still, Mitchell has its sights set on reaching the state semifinals in a revamped Class 11AA that features eight teams this fall. “I have great confidence in that because of the returning guys that we have and the faith I have in the development of our younger players,” VanOverschelde said. “We have a really good core group of sophomore players. We have to develop those guys so that they improve throughout the season and don’t take any steps backward.” Mitchell does not have to worry about qualifying for the playoffs, but games against Class 11AA opponents are crucial for seeding purposes. The Kernels also have a pair of games scheduled against traditional Class 11A powers Sioux Falls Christian (Sept. 7) and Dell Rapids (Sept. 20). Sioux Falls Christian is fresh off back-to-back Class 11B titles and moved up a class for the 2019 season,

while Dell Rapids was the Class 11A runner-up a year ago and won five state titles from 2008 to 2014. Given its recent history some of the teams in Class 11AA — Mitchell has won its last 17 games against Douglas, Huron, Spearfish and Sturgis since 2014 — it might seem like the Kernels have a favorable schedule, but VanOverschelde does not believe there is any room for growing pains on the slate. “We’re going to have to work our tails off each week,” VanOverschelde said. “... If you look at the path to the playoffs, on paper it might look one way, but each and every week, we have to be ready to compete.” Mitchell is breaking in new skill players at each position, but perhaps one of the most time-effective areas to improve is along the offensive line. The Kernels lost their top-six linemen from last season and it was a focal point all summer. Nick Rubendall was a JV stalwart last season and moves into the starting lineup, while Reed Foster takes over for two-time all-state center Carter Max. Taylor Feterl saw extensive time on the defensive line last season and is expected to be a big part of the offensive unit this year. “It’s always going to take time and there’s going to be growing pains,” VanOverschelde said. “But these guys have shown that they’re going to pick up on things quick and they understand the impact they have on us having the ability to run our offense.” Mitchell opened the season against Douglas on Aug. 31 and Sioux Falls Christian on Sept. 7.

Olivia Huber, Julia Platt and Atlanta Stahle are sophomores, while Amber Moller is a freshman. “The girls put in a lot of time over the summer and we are just ready to play,” coach Moller said. “We will see where we are at, but there’s a lot of talent out there and a lot of passion and love for the game.” Dahme has the most experience on the team. She’s moved up from Flight No. 2 singles and will be the No. 1 singles player this season. She will team up with Stahle to form the No. 1 doubles team. “She brings back a lot of experience,” Moller said about Dahme said. “She’s had a lot of success and we are really hoping for big things from her this year.” Stahle, who was Flight No. 5 last year, will hold down the No. 2 singles spot. Huber is moving up from Flight No. 6 singles to No. 3 this year. Huber and Moller will be the No. 2 singles team. Bathke is No. 4 in the singles lineup and she’s going to play No. 3 doubles with Jones. Moller will be the No. 5 singles player, while Jones will be the No. 6 singles player. Coach Moller said Brandon Valley is the favorite in the ESD and one of the top teams in the state. After that, the Kernels are among a logjam of teams in the conference that will be fighting for spots behind the Lynx. He also mentioned Watertown, Yankton and Harrisburg as other top teams in the conference. “This is one of the strongest ESD fields since I have been coaching,” Moller said. “I feel like we have a pretty darn good team and there’s probably four or five other teams that are going to contend along with us.”

Expect those routines to have a bit more flash and be a little more complicated than previous years, although Verhey has set aside time to refresh fundamental skills during practice each day. “Instead of a single turn, you’re going to see triples,” Verhey said. “You’re going to see a lot more fouettés, which is another turning sequence and harder hip hop tricks, as well. Mitchell eyes move up standings

Kernel girls sport experienced group in 2019

he Kernels have been building the past few years, but this could be their breakout campaign. Fresh off a 4-9-1 season and first-round loss in the Class AA state playoffs as the No. 16 seed, Mitchell girls soccer coach Bob Lemon doesn’t want to just squeak into the playoffs again. He wants to shoot up the standings and become a serious threat in Eastern South Dakota Conference play. “We’d like to move up, move up in the ESD,” Lemon said. “If we can move up and surprise some people — I don’t think we’ll surprise anybody because I think they’ve been watching us, saying, ‘Mitchell is a team that’s coming.’ We’d like to say this is a year we’d like to make a move.” Lemon will lean on a veteran squad, which has a large core of juniors alongside seniors Emma Hohn and Seemela Novak. That includes the now-healthy Macy Kempf, who was an all-ESD selection in 2017, and Grace Endorf. Although, mixed in with the Kernels’ experienced group is eighth-grader Mia Mullenmeister, who led the team in goals last season.

“Seeing the way they’ve worked together and putting some combinations together is really encouraging,” Lemon said. “We feel we’re ahead of where we were last year with the soccer knowledge and how we’re able to move the ball from one side to the other.” Building a cohesiveness between its core could turn Mitchell’s weakness — lack of possession — into its strength. It’s focused on learning to handle defensive pressure to win the time of possession battle, rather than kicking it downfield. In turn, it could lead to more goals for a team which played top-seed Pierre tough in last year’s playoffs, though fell 2-0 as it couldn’t find the back of the net. “We’ve spent a lot of time playing defense the last few years and I think we’re tired playing a lot of defense,” Lemon said. “We’d like to put the shoe on the other foot and make the other teams play defense and chase us. That’s really going to be key, but we have to be smart to be able to play.” Being able to consistently score would help Caroline Titze, who Lemon touts as one of the best goalkeepers in the state. “She’s such a leader in the back, directs and we really have a real sense of balance,” Lemon said.

Competition pushing Kernel volleyball team MHS players vying for court time

E

By Ryan Deal The Daily Republic

leven departed seniors have opened the door for some healthy competition. The Mitchell High School volleyball team lost 11 seniors that were instrumental in backto-back Class AA state volleyball appearances. The Kernels return just one player — Regan Waddell — that saw regular playing time last season. So it’s naturally led to players battling for court time. “It’s going to be interesting and it’s going to be competitive and they are all going to want their shot to play,” Mitchell coach Deb Thill said. “We’ve got a good mixture of incoming seniors and some good younger kids.” Thill noticed the competition during the offseason at camps and open gym, while the players were also dedicated to weightlifting and conditioning. “We have been very pleased with the attitude, the effort and that culture from year-to-year that you want a program to have,” Thill said. Waddell, Megan Scheurenbrand, Amy Uher and Maya Voelzke represent the senior class. Waddell, Uher and Voelzke will be team captains. “They definitely know my expectations and what it’s going to take,” Thill said. “They have been awesome leaders for the younger kids.”

afraid to shoot and I think they’re hungry for it. They know they have the range and have good positioning to get a shot.” Mitchell has plenty of scoring options, ranging from senior Dillon Robinson to eighth-grader Elijah Novak, who coach Novak envisions leading fastbreaks down the sideline. Cameron Gauger and Wyatt Haibeck can net goals, too, while even the Kernels game plan allows defenseman Tanner Wenz to fire shots. A more potent offensive attack would be especially beneficial for a team with Trevor Lambert in net. “Trevor’s one of the best goalkeepers in the state,” coach Novak said. “He’s exceptionally talented, not only in stopping the ball but also distributing the ball. He’s very important in the standpoint of leadership and being one of our rock solid players.” Lambert has had to lead a team which Novak admits had a learning curve during the first two weeks of practice. Although, he’s optimistic about their continual improvement, soccer IQ and savviness with the ball and keeping positional discipline. His optimism shows with his team’s expectations, too, a year after the Kernels squeaked into the Class AA state playoffs as the No. 16 seed before losing 9-0 to top-seeded Sioux Falls Roosevelt. “I always go in expecting to win,” coach Novak said. “I believe they can rise to the occasion. I’m an eternal optimist that way. I think they’ll be competitive and I think they’ll win some games.” However, Novak knows the learning curves aren’t over. He’s excited Mitchell’s first three games are at home, though recognizes the difference between practice and games. But while he waits for his team to gain experience on the pitch against other teams, Novak is content with his team’s progress. “The most important thing for me is that we continue to learn every game. I want to see continual improvement,” he said. “... They don’t necessarily have a lot of varsity game time experience, so that will be something they’ll kind of season themselves through the season. Right now, they’re looking good. I’m more than pleased with where we are.”

‘We got the potential’ Kernel cross country Three seniors lead Kernels during builds through youth upcoming boys golf campaign

Club in Yankton on Oct. 7-8. “We’ll work on our strategies — what clubs to hit, what clubs to hit where and work on the speedier greens,” Horan said about the state meet’s course. Mitchell ended last season playing its best golf on the second day of the state meet, leading Horan to believe it can improve on its ninth-place finish. Dailey (33rd), Clark (47th) and Tupper (57th) all had better secondday scores, resulting in the Kernels shooting 24 strokes better and ranking as the sixth-best team on the day. “We’re hoping for a season like that this year,” Horan said. “… Get on the top of our game and keep it going. We got the potential.” The Kernels will have plenty of time to practice at Lakeview Golf Course, including during the Eastern South Dakota Conference meet on Sept. 28. “Jumping right in there and starting with the competition and play smart,” Horan said about the team’s first invite. “Play with a positive attitude.”

By Jeremy Karll The Daily Republic The Mitchell High School boys golf team is younger this season, but not without leaders. It again enters the season with three seniors — Max Tupper, Kade Clark and Max Dailey — but will rely on underclassmen for the rest of its team score. However, coach Mark Horan doesn’t think it puts the Kernels at a disadvantage after finishing ninth at the Class AA state meet last season. “That’s the cycle of the golf team,” he said. “The new ones will step in and are going to do fine. Our three seniors have been solid players for years.” The Kernels’ three seniors have taken a leadership role to ease the transition as Lincoln Bates, Noah Larson and Jackson Childs round of their top-six golfers. With three new faces, Mitchell’s focus is on course management and improving its short game, hoping to culminate in it playing its best golf at the tough Hillcrest Golf and Country

Krcil to guide Kernel softball team

here’s a familiar face in charge of the Mitchell High School softball team. Craig Krcil, who has been an assistant for the past four seasons, was promoted to head coach after long-time coach Jim Misiaszek stepped down after 12 seasons. “I am so excited to be working with the girls,” Krcil said. “It’s been a fun, fun two weeks getting to know them and I am really looking forward to a good, solid season. We have some talented girls on the team.” Krcil has worked with both the middle school and junior varsity teams, which he said will help with the transition to head coach this season. “That will help immensely,” Krcil said. “They know me. I know them. It’s a good set of working relationships right now.” Krcil inherits a team that finished 8-17 last season, which were the most wins since 2015. The Kernels placed seventh at the state tournament. The Kernels have 20 players on the

varsity and junior varsity rosters, with another 14 in middle school. Mitchell has three seniors Hayley Reichelt, Kennedy Wantoch and Morgan Schneider. “Every single kid that I have out this year could potentially find some time at the varsity level,” Krcil said. Offensively, sophomore catcher Kate Nash will lead the group after earning honorable mention at the Eastern South Dakota Conference tournament last season. Sophomore Keirstyn Krcil — Craig’s daughter — finished with a .322 batting average and drove in 18 runs. She added six doubles. She was a secondteam all-state performer last season. “I think our strength is going to be offensively,” coach Krcil said. “We have a really good group of hitters.” Krcil, Wantoch and sophomore Jacey Linke will be the mainstays of the pitching staff, said coach Krcil. The ESD tournament is Sept. 20-21, while the state tournament is Oct. 4-5. “We will take this season — the individual games and each and every inning we play — just to build toward the improvement for the ESD and state tournaments,” coach Krcil said.

coach Cara Van Zee has put an emphasis on offense this offseason. Cooper feels the improvement started last year, and with the work the Golden Eagles put in over the summer, will continue in 2019. “Working on our attack, our attack power,” Van Zee said. “We’re focusing a lot on our offense and serves. Working on team communication and teamwork.” Cooper is one of six returning members. She’s joined by Erica Thompson, Kaitlyn Tegethoff, Whisper Eben, Sophie Eben and Keely O’Neill. Coach’s comments: We have big holes to fill from last year. We have all new linebackers on defense and a completely different set of backs in the offensive backfield. We should have some great depth at multiple positions. This time is a good size with good speed; a lot of guys go out for track and most of the team worked out this summer. We can open up the offense a little more this season and spread the ball around quite a bit more. This season, Class 9A is going to be absolutely loaded class and the 8 teams at the top will be very tough.

The Tigers were eighth in the conference last year in goals per game with 1.5 per match, while conceding 2.08 goals per match, which ranked ninth in the 13-team league. Seniors Kaylynn Anziano, of Rapid City, and Jocelyn Behm, of Sioux Falls, anchor the Tigers’ back line on defense. Among the Great Plains Athletic Conference opponents, Midland has been picked as the preseason favorite, while Hastings returns as the conference’s regular season and postseason champion from 2018. DWU was picked to finish 10th.

without a single senior on the roster once again. Brooke Ehlers, of Canton, and South Africa native Hijke Pretorious, a transfer from Western Texas College, are the lone upperclassmen and each are juniors. Jade Burr, who finished second individually a year ago at the GPAC championships for the Tigers as a freshman, is not on the team’s fall roster. Men’s cross country

Local connections likely will be counted upon for the DWU men’s cross country squad in 2019. DWU was 10th last season at the GPAC meet, with sophomore Brendan Langbehn recording the top time in 37th place. Along with Langbehn, the Tigers return three of their five runners from the GPAC meet last season, joined by Plankinton product Devin Rihanek and Rex Schlicht, a senior from Woonsocket. Schlicht was 61st last year, while Rihanek finished 70th. Other area athletes of note include senior Tyler Larson (Mitchell), sophomore Layne Lewis (Plankinton) and freshman Spens Schlicht (Woonsocket). The team is coached by second-year coach Jamen Helton. The GPAC championship meet is Nov. 9 in South Sioux City, Nebraska.

Women’s cross country

The DWU women’s cross country team posted its best finish in school history at the GPAC championships in 2018, finishing seventh. The Tigers bring back their top runner with hopes of even more improvement this season. McKenna Rogers (St. Michael, Minnesota) finished in 27th place at the GPAC championships. Delanie Larson (Gettysburg) finished 68th last year, and Savannah Schmidt (Plankinton) was 86th. Macey Bohl (Garretson) is the only other upperclassmen on the team, entering the year as a junior. Also on the roster are freshmen Annika Vermeulen (Mitchell) and Patience Nesheim (Parkston). The Tigers might also call on five-time Class AA state meet participant Samantha Shoultz, of Huron, who joins the team as a freshman, as well. Like the men, the GPAC championship will be contested Nov. 9 in South Sioux City, Nebraska.
