hen the final pass is being made, floating at the net, the odds are good that it’s going to one of three Mitchell High School volleyball players. It can go to Mackenzie Miller, the reigning Class AA first-team all-state player who has more than 400 kills and hits as hard as anyone. It can go to Chelsea Brewster, whose big swing and leaping ability is dangerous for whichever defender steps in dig it.
Or it can go to Carly Haring, the tall middle hitter, another power hitter who can deftly find the weaknesses in the defense. In the words of coach Deb Thill, that’s not one “go-to player.” That’s three. “And we’re really fortunate that we have more than one,” the Kernel coach said. “They want to have the ball going their way, they want to be the one 001657720r1

lot of work and they’re being rewarded for it.” On the court, there is a magic number for the trio: eight. When each of the three players has at least eight kills a the match, the Kernels are 11-2 this season. Brewster said when she sees Miller or Haring make a big play, it motivates her to match them. “We build off that energy and it makes us a lot better,” Brewster said. “We really enjoy pushing each
other in practice.” Miller said all three players are fiercely competitive in practice, upping the bar all season. “We want to push each other,” she said. “That only makes us better.” Miller is the team’s leading hitter with 406 kills, or five kills per set for the Kernels and is hitting .355 for the season. Miller had 20 kills in the Kernels’ state-qualifying sweep of Sturgis on Nov. 9, marking the 10th time this season she’s had at least 20 kills in a match. Her season-high came in a 31-kill performance against Yankton earlier this season. Brewster, who has 278 kills on the
season and hit .316 during the campaign, has posted her own big numbers this year. She’s had 15 or more kills in eight matches. The 6-foot-1 Haring, who has won two of the last three Class AA state high jump titles in track and field, is Mitchell’s primary blocker at the net. Haring has 76 blocks, and has hit .314 for 184 kills on the season. “We know we’re at our best when we’re all going,” Haring said. “We want everyone involved and playing fast.” That’s created a good challenge for Mitchell setter Mandy Schmidt, who is in charge of getting the ball to the right hitters at the right time. “They all want the ball. That’s a good problem to have,” she said. “It comes down to the rhythm of the match and noticing where everyone

is at one the court. More than anything, Schmidt said she tries to get the ball to the hot hand. “If they’re really hitting well, I want to keep getting them the ball,” she said. Some of hitting success has rubbed off on their Kernel teammates. Sage Jorgensen, Brooke Flemmer and Payton Morgan have also filled in well at the outside-hitter slots when the chances have arrived. For the Kernels to have success at the state tournament, Brewster said her team needs to focus on “the three C’s” as coach Thill has dubbed them. “Communication, cover and celebration,” Brewster said. “They are all very important. We’re very excited for state. It’s our first time and it’s going to be a great experience.”

Competitive field expected for AA tournament Defending champion Harrisburg leads group of eight contenders town and Sioux Falls O’Gorman are the other three state qualifiers. The Kernels — making their first appearance since 2012 is snapping the longest state-tournament drought of the eight Class AA tournament teams. “We’re happy to be going,” junior setter Mandy Schmidt said. “We know we’re going to have to bring our A-games and play our best.” Here’s a short look at the other seven state tournament teams: ► With a senior-laden roster and experience as the 2016 state champions, top-seeded Harrisburg (20-1) is a likely state championship favorite once again. Four Tigers have already signed to play collegiate volleyball, led by 6-foot-4 future Wyoming middle hitter Carlie Fikse, who has 231 kills and 75 blocks this season. Setter Avery Thorson, who was first-team all-state in 2016, will play at Augustana and has 738 assists on the season. Hitters Meghan Krull and Madison Wassink will play for the University of Mary and Minnesota State-Moorhead, respectively. Wassink has a team-best 305 kills, while Krull has 143.

Mitchell’s Sage Jorgensen hits a serve during a match at Harrisburg earlier this season. ► Harrisburg and O’Gorman (18-14) will play in the first round, after meeting just two weeks prior in a threeset sweep at O’Gorman. The Knights have a difficult task in the first round but boasts a young, talented lineup. Sophomore Emma Ronsiek is the team’s leading hitter with 259 kills and 51 aces. Courtney Baruth has 171 kills and 74 blocks for the Knights, who are led defensively by seniors Meghan Bornhoft and Maggie Jarding, each with 200-plus digs. ► Fourth-seeded Aberdeen Central (16-5)
is led by senior standout Paiton Burckhard, who has 313 kills — twice as many as anyone else on the Golden Eagles’ roster. Second-most is freshman Brooklyn Kusler with 156. Burckhard has a team-best 44 aces, while junior middle hitter Melia Mounga has 64 blocks. Laura Babcock has posted 387 digs and future Dakota Wesleyan basketball player Haylee Mork has 584 set assists. ► Aside from Harrisburg’s 11-match win streak, fifth-seeded Watertown is the hottest team in the tournament, winners of the

ment play this season and 11-1 against outof-state competition. No individual statistics were available when this edition went to press. ► Huron (14-10), the No. 6 seed in the tournament, simply does not get swept. The Tigers were 8-0 in dual matches this season that went three sets but were 1-5 in fourset matches and 3-3 in five-set affairs. Hollee Niehus, a 5-foot8 junior, has 347 kills, while Kayla Schimke has 257 kills for Huron, which has received 588 digs from Havyn Heinz and 728 set assists from Jayda Shillingstad. ► Seventh-seeded Washington (2013) has done the one thing no other team in the tournament field has accomplished: beat Harrisburg. The Warriors did it in five sets on Sept. 21, despite not having a player with more than 10 kills in the match. Washington has just one senior on the roster, with junior Lily Bartling posting 262 kills. A pair of tall, young players leads the Warriors at the net, with 6-foot-3 sophomore Phekran Kong posting 174 kills and 85 blocks and 6-foot-4 freshman Sydni Schetnan hitting 163 kills from her right-side slot.

last six matches. The Arrows (15-6) are led by Mariah Gloe’s 284 kills and Abby Johnson hit .307 during the season with 208 kills and Taylor Corey has 361 digs. ► Third-seeded Rapid City Stevens (286), which is playing in its 19th straight state tournament, made the state tournament by sweeping cross-town rival Rapid City Central in the Round of 16. It was a chance for the Raiders to get on the right page after limping through the final six matches of the regular season at 3-3. Stevens was 14-2 in tourna-

What exactly that means for the state tournament this week in Rapid City is unknown. But it seems to point a solid state tournament field this week at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Mitchell coach Deb Thill said she expects a competitive tournament but not too much different from previous versions of the eightteam tournament. “We’ve had eight good teams there before, even with the districts and regions,” she said. “I think we have that again, even if we went a different way to get there.” More than half of the tournament field returns from 2016, with defending champion Harrisburg, Huron, Aberdeen Central, Sioux Falls Washington and Rapid City Stevens all back. Aberdeen defeated Stevens in five sets for third-place a year ago, while Washington swept Huron for fifth place. State runner-up Sioux Falls Roosevelt did not qualify this season, as Mitchell, Water-

Five key matches in the Kernels’ season With 20 wins in the team’s back pocket heading the Class AA state tournament, the Mitchell High School volleyball team has had a memorable s e a son.
Here’s five matches that have helped to define the Kernels’ season to date.
Aug. 22 win over Aberdeen Central Right from the start, MHS played one of its best matches of the season in a win that would become more significant as the season wore on. The match was the first of two in the regular season in which the Kernels would rally from a 2-1 set deficit, claiming a five-set win on the Kernels home floor, 25-15, 18-25, 16-25, 25-16 and 15-9. Chelsea Brewster had a huge night, hitting .556 for 21 kills, while Mackenzie Miller and Carly
Haring each had 13 kills. Miller had 28 digs and Bridget Thill had 19 digs, as Mitchell averaged nearly 20 digs in each set and Mandy Schmidt had 47 assists with only one error. Aberdeen is much better now than they were at the start of the season, so the Golden Eagles would argue this match isn’t a fair representation of what team they are now. But if Mitchell plays like they did in the season opener at the state tournament in Rapid City, they will be a tough out.
Sept. 19 loss at Harrisburg
If there’s one loss that Mitchell can learn the most from, it might be the first one. Mitchell won the first and third sets, holding a 2-1 lead and were outscored in the final two sets 35-23 but the Kernels’ effort was strong Marcus Traxler / Republic and Mitchell found a Mitchell’s Alexis Elfstrand decent way of matching prepares to serve during the Nov. 9 Class AA state-qualifying wits with Harrisburg’s match against Sturgis at MHS. big hitters. emerged with a 20-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-12 and 15-11 win. Mackenzie Miller had 20 kills, while Chelsea Brewster and Carly Haring had 11 and 10 kills, respectively on a night in which Mitchell had 20 hitting errors. But there were eight aces and four players with 10-plus digs. Mitchell did not play well in the second meeting with Harrisburg, a three-set sweep in Mitchell on Oct. 17. Should Mitchell play the Tigers again, the first contest between the top-two ranked teams all year might be the match they’ll most need to replicate.
Oct. 14 win at Rapid City Stevens Mitchell’s best hitting performance of the season came in a big match, one that would ultimately decide the Kernels’ edge in seed points at the end of the year, claiming a five-set win on the back-end of a Rapid City doublehead-
BUSTERSAUTOBROKERS.COM
er, 26-24, 23-25, 15-25, 25-23 and 15-9. Stevens — which played 16 matches in tournament play this season — only had two five-set matches all year and both were on the same weekend, with a five-set loss to Huron on Oct. 13, followed by Mitchell’s win on a Saturday afternoon. It’s not a stretch to say Mitchell was the Raiders’ toughest test all season.
Oct. 24 win at Yankton Mitchell avoided a tough loss at Yankton with a five-set win, smashing the Gazelles in the final set 15-6, completing a 25-21, 23-25, 25-18, 22-25, 15-6 win on the road against a rival. Again, it was another huge hitting night for Mitchell, hitting .357 as a team. Miller had a season-best 31 kills and Brewster put down 20 kills. Schmidt was again in great form, posting 52 assists without an error.
Yankton had four hitters with at least 10 kills one of the Gazelles’ best matches of the season.
Nov. 9 win over Sturgis
Playing in a winner-take-all scenario, Mitchell avoided the pitfalls of the 2016 Kernels and took care of a lowly Scoopers squad in three sets. Mackenzie Miller had 20 kills and Chelsea Brewster and Carly Haring each had eight kills, demonstrating Mitchell’s ability at the net when its top players are on their games. Mitchell hit .416 as a team — the best mark of the season and played well in a tune-up for the state tournament, winning 25-13, 25-13, 25-13. In the long season, it’s not Mitchell’s best win but it’s the most significant, the one that sends the Kernels to the state tournament for the first time in five years.

Steady setter: Schmidt orchestrates Mitchell’s power attack By Eric Mayer The Daily Republic t 5-foot-5, Mandy Schmidt is tasked with one of the Mitchell High School volleyball team’s tallest tasks: orchestrating the offensive attack. The junior setter touches the ball on nearly every point. She has to position herself, make quick decisions and put the ball in a good spot. It’s a process Schmidt follows like clockwork and it’s allowed all the other Kernels on the floor shine. “It’s my job to control what the hitters are running, making sure we know what we are doing with our hits and to get them a good set that they can put down,” Schmidt said. “You have to make split-second decisions, knowing when you need to go to which hitter.” This season, Schmidt has made a lot of good split-second decisions. In 82 sets played, she’s totaled 831 assists for an average of 10.1 assists per set. It’s

She’s quick, she’s athletic and she can get to a lot of balls. We run an offense where we have a lot of different options. She has to be very smart and she is.” As a leader on the court, Thill said Schmidt’s work ethic and poise will be counted on at the Class

has three key hitters, Schmidt know how to best set up her fellow teammates. Schmidt said she’s learned when to feed certain hitters and when to try a new approach. “A lot depends on where (the opposing team’s) blockers are,” Schmidt said. “Knowing what hitters they have been able to dig up and who is striking the ball well for us.” Chelsea Brewster, who is second on the team with 278 kills, said Schmidt is always aware of what is happening on the court and she helps lighten the load for the hitters who can focus more on spiking the ball. “She can basically get to any pass, which is a great asset,” Brewster said. “She can set from her knees if the pass is too low and she’s very fast.” Along with her setting abilities, Schmidt has strong serving and defensive abilities. She is fifth on the team in aces with 25 and fourth on the team in total digs
with 192, while adding 19 kills and 13 blocks. This is Schmidt’s second full season as Mitchell’s setter and Thill said Schmidt continues to find ways to improve. Prior to the state tournament, she was selected to the allEastern South Dakota Conference team for a second straight year. “She’s got a quicker release on the ball,” Thill said. “The quicker the release, the harder it is for the defense to know where she is going to set it. That makes our offense faster.” And as the Kernels prepare for the state tournament, Schmidt said the team will look to make the most out of its appearance. “It’s a big deal for us to get to the state tournament because we’ve all been looking forward to it for a long time,” Schmidt said. “We have to do what we usually do. Stay relaxed and not get too stressed out.”
