TEAM-BY-TEAM LOOK AT AREA HIGH SCHOOL PLAYOFF TEAMS
By The Daily Republic The road to Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium starts this week. Eighteen area football teams will be vying for trips to Brookings with the goal of hoisting a championship trophy at stake. A preview on each area team can be found below:
BRIDGEWATEREMERY/ETHAN
The Seahawks finished the regular season as one of three undefeated teams in Class 11B, but won the tiebreaker to earn the top seed. BEE sports a tough defense, which held four teams to under 10 points and all but McCook Central/Mon-
trose to fewer than 25. It’s led by Grant Andrews (87 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 interceptions) and Brady Hawkins (75 tackles, two interceptions). Rylee Schultz and Colby Weber both have a team-high three
sacks, while Chase Arend has picked off a trio of passes. It’s led to it outscoring opponents 371-92 this season, with a 21-16 win on Sept. 13 over Mount Vernon/ Plankinton being its closest game. Hawkins has been a consistent force through the air and on the ground for BEE, too. He has 21 total touchdowns, 708 rushing yards and 641 passing yards. Jonah Hofer has a teamhigh 759 rushing yards and 15 scores on the ground, while also being Hawkins’ top receiver. Hofer (244 receiving yards) is one of four receivers — Bodie Burnham, Arend and Schultz — with at least 100 yards. BEE lost to Sioux Falls Christian in last year’s Class 11B state title game. The Seahawks host Hot Springs on Thursday in the opening round of this year’s playoffs.
WINNER
The Warriors are back in the Class 11B title chase. Winner, which has four Class 11B titles since 2009, is the No. 2 seed and will host throughout the playoffs. The Warriors sport a perfect 8-0 record and have outscored their opponents by a 34852 margin this season. Their closest game was a 14-6 decision against Mount Vernon/Plankinton on Sept. 27. Senior running back Trevor Peters has rushed for 810
yards on just 89 carries and has scored 17 touchdowns. He has 27 tackles and three interceptions on defense. Quarterback Brady Fritz has passed for 339 yards, rushed for 216 yards and has five total touchdowns. Running back Phillip Jorgensen has added 525 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. Defensively, Preston Norrid has racked up 32 t a c k l e s
and one interception on defense. Winner lost to eventual Class 11B state champ Sioux Falls Christian in last year’s quarterfinals. The Warriors will host Lead-Deadwood on Thursday in the opening round of this year’s playoffs.

MCCOOK CENTRAL/ MONTROSE
After a one-year absence, McCook Central/Montrose is back in the playoffs. The Fighting Cougars won their first four games before suffering their only loss of the season, a 57-35 defeat to top-seeded Bridgewa- ter-Em-
ery/Ethan on Sept. 20. MCM’s offense has topped 30 points in every game, which includes ending the season with a 63-point outburst against Redfield. In its win over the Pheasants, Raygen Randall threw for 276 yards and three
touchdowns on 10 of 13 passing. Blake Gessner, Trevor Hansen and Jake Cheeseman each scored two touchdowns in the win. The Fighting Cougar defense was led by Parker Scheier, David Hidalgo and Trey Claussen each recording five tackles in the season-ending win. MCM makes its return to the playoffs on Thursday against Stanley County.
MOUNT VERNON/ PLANKINTON
The Titans are the No. 6 seed in Class 11B and have played the top-two seeds — Winner and Bridgewater-Emery/ Ethan — down to the wire. MVP’s two losses came against No. 1 seed Winner (14-6) and No. 2 seed Bridgewater-Emery/ Ethan (21-16). MVP is powered by bruising running back Jesse Hast-
ings. The future North Dakota State University fullback surpassed 1,000 or more rushing yards in each of the past three seasons. This year, he’s rushed for 1,298 yards and 23 touchdowns. He has 4,593 rushing yards and 76 rushing touchdowns in his career.
Hunter Pranger (578 rushing yards/5 touchdowns) has complemented Hastings in the backfield this season. He’s compiled 54.5 tackles on defense. The Titans were defeated by eventual Class 11B runner-up Bridgewater-Emery/ Ethan in last year’s semifinals. MVP will play Chamberlain in the first round on Thursday.

4 CHAMBERLAIN
The Cubs enter the Class 11B playoffs as the No. 11 seed and went 1-3 against playoff teams during the regular season. Chamberlain is synonymous with all-state defensive tackle and Nebraska commit Nash Hutmacher (58 tackles), but the Cubs have key pieces in other areas,
particularly on offense. Remington Rossow is two yards shy of 1,000 for the season and has 14 rushing touchdowns, while Max Hawk has thrown for 826 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions since becoming the starting quarterback in Week 3. Former starter Hayden Evans has since moved to wide receiver, where he has made 21 recep-
tions for 368 yards and two scores to compliment Marty Ross’ 39 grabs for 602 yards and six scores. Evans has also made an interception in seven of eight games and has eight for the season. Chamberlain plays Mount Vernon/Plankinton in the first round on Thursday in its first playoff appearance since 2016.
BON HOMME
The defending Class 9AA champs are right in the thick of the playoff picture again. The Cavaliers went 7-1 on the season as their only hiccup was against Class 9A power Canistota/Freeman, which also won a state title last season. Senior quarterback Joshua Crownover powers the Cavaliers on the ground and through the air. He’s rushed for 743 yards and six touchdowns. He’s also passed for 905 yards and nine more scores. The linebacker also has 71 tackles on defense. Junior Noah Heesch (279 rushing yards/3 touchdowns) and senior Nate Scieszinski (227 rushing yards/4 touchdowns) are also dynamic playmakers. Scieszinski has 477 receiving yards on 32 receptions and five touchdowns. Defensively, senior Cole Bares has
October 23, 2019 racked up 75.5 tackles and Riley Rothschadl has five interceptions. The Cavaliers play Parkston on Thursday in the opening round. Bon Homme defeated Parkston 34-6 during the regular season.

The Black Panthers finished 3-5 to earn a spot in the Class 9AA playoffs. Platte-Geddes picked up wins over Colome, Gayville-Volin and Parkston on its way to the playoff berth. Its win over Parkston secured the No. 3 spot in Class 9AA Region 3. Junior quarterback Kelby VanDerWerff has passed for 1,155 yards
and 20 touchdowns this season. He threw for 230 yards or more in three straight games during the season. Sophomore tight end Caden Foxley has hauled in 14 catches for 316 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore Landon
Schulte has piled up 82 tackles on defense. The Black Panthers lost to Alcester-Hudson in the first round of the Class 9B playoffs last season. Platte-Geddes will play Hanson in the opening round on Thursday.
MENNO/MARION
The Razorbacks’ late playoff push was rewarded by winning the tiebreaker over Clark/Willow Lake for the final playoff spot. They won two of their final three games after their Week 5 bye week. Menno/Marion
scored 64 points in its season-finale win over Avon after totaling 72 points in its first seven contests. Gavin Pankratz has led the Razorback offense, throwing for 1,297 yards and 11 touchdowns. He and Danny Cremer connected 26 times for 318 yards, though Austin Kessler has hauled in a team-
high three touchdowns. Kessler also leads the team with 789 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. Defensively, Josh Heckenlaible totaled 71 tackles and Cremer finished with 47. Dawson Ulmer sacked the quarterback three times. Despite a rocky start, Menno/Marion held four teams under 30 points. 6 PARKSTON
The Trojans squeaked into the playoffs, in part due to winning two of its final five games after an 0-3 start. Parkston defeated Tripp-Delmont/Armour/Andes Central/Dakota Christian (45-6) and Menno/ Marion (32-0).
It ended the season with an 18-0 loss to Platte-Geddes, though. This came after it topped 20 points in three of its prior four contests. In the loss, Nate Doering threw for 77 yards and Rylan Leischner
added 39 on the ground. Riley Weber recorded a team-high 19 tackles in the loss. Cole Van Zee and Sutton Hohn each added nine tackles. Parkston plays Bon Homme on Thursday in Tyndall to open the playoffs.
HANSON
The Beavers return to the Class 9AA playoffs one year after going winless. Not only is Hanson making a playoff appearance after a two-year hiatus, but it will host a first-round game as the No. 2 seed in Region 3.
October 23, 2019
Quarterback Reggie Slaba has done it all for the Beavers this season, passing for 538 yards and five touchdowns, while also leading the team with 473 rushing yards and seven scores and making 35 tackles on defense. Simon Weber has also been a factor, rushing for 342 yards and five touchdowns, w h i l e
also serving as a weapon in the passing game with 207 receiving yards. Hadley Wallace has also recorded 270 rushing yards and three touchdowns. All eight games have come against playoff teams this season and Hanson has yet to win back-to-back wins, but it will get a shot to do so against Platte-Geddes on Thursday in Alexandria.

CANISTOTA/ FREEMAN Canistota/Freeman captured the Class 9A title last season and is again among the contenders in a loaded class. The Pride began the season with seven straight wins, but dropped a 46-20 decision against Class 9AA power Viborg-Hurley to end the season. The same scenario
happened last season as Canistota/Freeman lost to Garretson to end the regular season, but it went onto to claim the title. Senior quarterback Trey Ortman has passed for 575 yards and seven touchdowns, while rushing for 238 yards and five more scores. He also has three interceptions on defense. Ortman’s junior brother — Tyce — pow-
ers the rushing attack with 945 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also has four interceptions on defense. Senior fullback Bailey Sage has 363 rushing yards and 10 scores. Defensively, he’s racked up 40.5 tackles. The Pride will host Oldham-Ramona/ Rutland in the opening round on Thursday. Canistota/Freeman defeated ORR by a 58-6 margin on Sept. 6.
HOWARD
Pat Ruml’s bunch has put together another solid campaign. The Tigers enter the postseason with a 7-1 mark as their only blemish was a 22-0 defeat against Canistota/Freeman on Sept. 13. Howard took second to the Pride in last year’s Class 9A finals and it’s proven to be a tough out come playoff time. The Tigers edged Warner (8-7) and Britton-Hecla (12-8) on the road in back-to-back weeks during the playoffs a season ago. Junior Riley Genzlinger leads a bal-
anced rushing attack. He’s rushed for 695 yards on 99 carries and 10 touchdowns. Junior Lane Miller has 501 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Junior Kieffer Klinkhammer (341 rushing yards/2 touchdowns) and sophomore John Callies (234 rushing yards/7 touchdowns) also contribute to the ground game. Senior quarterback Isaac Feldhaus has passed for
511 yards. Junior wide receiver Jaxon Kampshoff has hauled in 123 yards and two touchdowns. Kampshoff also leads the team in tackles (67) and sacks (4). Senior linebacker Paul Winker has 52 tackles, while junior defensive back Sam Aslesen has picked off three passes. The Tigers play De Smet on Thursday in the first round. Howard knocked off the Bulldogs 38-6 on Oct. 4.

GREGORY
New class, new coach and same old Gorillas. Gregory, which is not far removed from a pair of Class 9AA titles, dropped down to Class 9A this season. Under new coach John King, the Gorillas have continued to pile up the wins. Gregory went 7-1 during the regular season as its only loss
October 23, 2019 came against Class 9AA power Bon Homme by a 23-7 decision. Senior Jackson Eklund paces the ground attack with 675 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns. Defensively, he’s racked up 61 tackles. Sophomore Coy Determan has passed for 722 yards and seven touchdowns, while also rushing for 466 yards and eight touchdowns. BURKE Fresh off a Great Plains Conference title, the Cougars are heading into the postseason with some momentum. They enter the playoffs with five wins in their last six games after knocking off Scotland by a 62-16 to end the season. Junior quarterback Hunter Van Nieuwenhuyse engineers the offense and has
thrown for 784 yards and 12 touchdowns. Senior tight end Jaden Frank has hauled in 21 catches for 471 yards and eight touchdowns. Senior tailback Finn Hanson amassed 779
rushing yards and 14 touchdowns. Senior speedster Ethan DeLong has rushed for 535 yards and six touchdowns. Burke was defeated by Faulkton in the Class 9B quarterfinals last season. The Cougars will play Kimball/White Lake in the first round this season. Burke dropped a 12-6 decision against KWL on Oct. 11.
LYMAN
After a three-game surge in the middle of the season, the Raiders enter the Class 9A playoffs looking to snap a string of three consecutive losses. Lyman was held scoreless in the final two games of the regular season, but averaged 28 points per game through the first six.
Corwin Mohr-Eymer has been the featured running back, rushing for 686 yards and eight touchdowns, while Teagan Gourneau has been a dual threat at quarterback. The freshman signal caller has thrown for 421 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions, while also rushing for 316 yards and four scores.
Gourneau also has a big-play threat at wide receiver as Ty Schindler has totaled 228 yards and three touchdowns on 10 receptions this season. The Raiders dropped their first-round game to Corsica-Stickney last year, but look to pull an upset on Gregory — the top seed in Region 3 — on Thursday.

the No. 2 seed in Region 3. Junior quarterback Brendan Wentland has racked up 364 passing yards and four touchdowns. He’s also recorded 423 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Sophomore running back Caden Van Drongelen has logged 511 rushing yards and four touch-
downs. Defensively, he’s compiled 53.5 tackles. The Jaguars were eliminated by Britton-Hecla in last year’s Class 9A quarterfinals. Corsica-Stickney opens the 2019 postseason against Irene-Wakonda in Corsica. The Jaguars edged the Eagles by a 22-19 score on Aug. 30.

matchups that are going to cause some people problems. It’s very interesting — given the nature of the beast in 9A — to see how it’s going to shake out.” Many of the teams in Region 3 have prepared for the 9A playoff gauntlet with tough regular-season schedules. Former 9AA power Gregory, Kimball/ White Lake and Burke have battled each other during the regular season. The WiLdKats and Burke also have to square off once more in the first round after KWL won a 12-6 battle on Oct. 11. The Gorillas and WiLdKats have also dealt with the likes of defending 9AA champion Bon Homme and new 9B power Wolsey-Wessington during Little Missouri Valley Conference play. While some of the teams may have more

By Nick Sabato The Daily Republic For those that enjoy unpredictability, parity and depth, keep an eye on Class 9A as the prep football playoffs begin. Not only has defending state champion Canistota/Freeman reloaded for another run, but three other state finalists are in contention. Last year’s 9A runner-up Howard rolls into the playoffs at 7-1, while reclassification has moved 9AA runner-up Kimball/ White Lake and 9B runner-up Sully Buttes into the mix. Meanwhile, 10 of the 16 teams have two losses or fewer, and all four teams in Sully Buttes’ Region 4. “There’s going to be a lot of tough second-round matchups — more than what there has been in the past,” Canistota/Freeman head coach James Strang said. “There’s going to be some first-round

playoff experience — particularly in the later stages of the tournament — it is not always a guarantee that it works advantageously. “There’s always that level of buzz, that level of excitement that comes,” Strang said, “You just hope that you use it as a positive motivator and it doesn’t twist things around and make you second-guess what you’re doing. You have to use that anxiety as a motivator and not a hindrance.”
BON HOMME OPTIMISTIC ABOUT ODDS TO REPEAT IN 9AA
Realignment caused some of the depth in Class 9AA to evaporate,
playing with 22 teams this season, which has helped put Bon Homme in position to make a bid to repeat. The Cavaliers are 7-1 — with the lone loss of the season coming to Canistota/Freeman — and a Week 8 bye week has allowed some time to recuperate. “I’m cautiously optimistic that we have a pretty good shot,” Bon Homme head coach Byron Pudwill said. “Last year was a murderer’s row. For us to get to the (DakotaDome), we had to play Deuel, Gregory and Wolsey-Wessington.” Unbeaten and top-seeded Viborg-Hurley, Deuel and Lemmon/ McIntosh are among the frontrunners to challenge Bon Homme for its crown. Hanson makes its return to the playoffs for the first time since 2016
a year after finishing 0-8, while Menno/Marion makes its first playoff appearance since 2014. Like its Region 3 foes, Parkston is back in the playoffs after missing last season.
SCOTLAND SEEKS SPOT IN WIDE-OPEN 9B
It should be no surprise that the most wide-open of the nine-man classes is 9B. Since its formation in 1981, only two teams have won consecutive championships — Kimball in 2003-2004 and Tripp from 1983-1985. Last year’s champion Colome did not qualify for the playoffs, while Sully Buttes moved up. Colman-Egan, which won 9B in 2017 and 9A in 2016, is 8-0 and appears to be primed to make another championship run, while the top seed in last season’s

9AA bracket Wolsey-Wessington has dropped down two classifications. But one of the big surprises in the class has been Scotland. The Highlanders finished atop Region 3 at 5-3 one season after missing the playoffs for the first time since Ryan Robb took the helm in 2013. With five seniors, Scotland is looking to make a playoff run while still in the rebuilding phase. “For confidence and motivation to keep working hard throughout basketball and wrestling season, throughout track and throughout the summer,” Robb said. “These guys really did work hard last offseason. It was not fun going 2-6 and missing the playoffs.” Dell Rapids St. Mary, Harding County and Langford Area also should be factors in Class 9B.

A balanced class
Seahawks, Warriors enter 11B playoffs as top-two seeds By Jeremy Karll The Daily Republic Throw a dart at Class 11B and it’d likely land on a championship contender. In the first season of seeding playoff teams regardless of region, 11B beams parity. Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan, Winner and Webster Area are the top-three seeds, respectively, after ending the regular season undefeated. Although, Mobridge-Pollock, McCook Central/Montrose and St. Thomas More only have one loss and Mount Vernon/ Plankinton’s two defeats came by a combined 13 points to the top-two seeds. “Probably as strong as it’s been in a while,” Winner coach Dan Aaker said. “And probably sets up for some interesting playoff matchups, especially with the new format it should be exciting.” MVP coach Brent Olson puts BEE and Winner in their own tier, and MCM coach Shawn Flanagan tabbed the Seahawks as the team to beat. Try-
ing to chase down the Seahawks and Warriors are 14 teams who had to earn their playoff spot against varying styles. It adds to the strength of the playoff field for the 25-team class, unlike where eight of 10 Class 11AAA teams and all eight Class 11AA teams make the playoffs. “I think it’s more competitive,” Flanagan said. “It’s harder to get into the playoffs and seeding really matters. Every game really truly does count.” Every week could bring a new challenge, too, especially in the playoffs. The differing offensive styles aren’t hard to spot at the top of the class. Winner won five games with quarterback Brady Fritz completing two or fewer passes, though MCM found success running an up-tempo, spread offense. The Fighting Cougars still don’t pass as much as St. Thomas More, though. And Brady Hawkins gives the

Seahawks a dual-threat quarterback. “That’s what’s interesting about the playoffs,” Olson said. “Our conference in our area (is) very run-heavy, physical football teams, and what happens when you match that up with a McCook Central/Montrose — not that they don’t run — who runs an up-tempo, spread offense or a St. Thomas More who throws it a high percentage of times that teams around here don’t see that often.”
A NEW PLAYOFF SYSTEM
There’s a spectrum of opinions among coaches about switching from regions to outright seeding the top-16 teams. Aaker and Flanagan both support a system they believe gives it the best chance to see the top-two teams play on Nov. 15 in Brookings. Olson is more impartial, simply focusing on who the Titans play next. The impact can be debated among coaches, but there’s still inherent change. “The biggest change is there won’t be re-seeding (after the first round),” Olson said. “So once you get in your half of the bracket,
you know the path you have to take and you can collect film a little more, where before you’d play the first round and they’d re-seed the eight teams.” While the new system could eliminate region rivalries developed over first-round meetings and cause for longer road trips during Thursday’s first round, it gives teams a chance to play new opponents. Mixing up opponents is welcomed by Flanagan, a former assistant coach at Sioux Falls Lincoln and Washington. During his time in Sioux Falls, he called their schedules “redundant” at times, as they played some teams up to four times a year — twice during offseason camps, regular season and playoffs. “I think that’s what makes playoffs exciting,” he said. “Playing teams you haven’t played all year or you might not play for a few years.” This year, five of the eight games are between teams who didn’t play in the regular season. “We’ll see some quality games in the first round, which at times maybe we didn’t see that,” Aaker said. “I think the quarterfinals for sure will be really good football games. That’s best for the players involved and the fans.”
