Stampede is back on schedule
Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo is set for 50th annual event after 2020 cancellation BY RYAN DEAL Mitchell Republic
The 50th annual Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo is back on schedule. One year after COVID19 wiped out Mitchell’s annual four-day event, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Associationsanctioned rodeo is back. “We’re very excited,” said Jim Miskimins, who is president of Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo, Inc. “One of the biggest disappointments a year ago was the fact that we were gearing up to celebrate our 50th anniversary. So if there was any after effect that
stung, it was the fact that we felt like we missed out on our chance to have our biggest celebration ever.” After serving as a summer staple in Mitchell for 49 straight years, the 2020 event fell victim to the coronavirus, leading to a decision by the board of directors to cancel the rodeo for the first time since its inception in 1971. Miskimins said they were disappointed with the final decision, but felt confident they made the proper call to cancel the event.

“We also didn’t want to put the public at risk, not knowing what to expect during those early days,” Miskimins said. “So once we made the decision we were pretty comfortable that it was the right one for our event and our community at that time.” After the one-year hiatus, the four-day rodeo is set for July 15-18 at Horseman’s Sports Arena. The event regularly attracts thousands of rodeo fans from across the United States each year. The rodeo’s contestants will participate in bareback riding, calf roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, team roping, barrel racing and bull riding. In addition to the rodeo contests, there is western music, a rodeo queen competition, parade chili cook-off, rodeo mixer, golf tournament and mutton bustin’ for the children. “We are very pleased and happy we can open those gates and welcome people to the 50th anniversary Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo,” Miskimins said. New to this year’s lineup is the Xtreme Bull Riding at 8 p.m.
Thursday, July 15. The Mustang Seeds-sponsored event normally takes place during Dakotafest in August. But the rodeo committee scheduled it to kick off the Corn Palace Stampede, with regular rodeo action taking place Friday-through-Sunday. “It’s going to not only hopefully provide more fans to attend the bull riding, but give all the fans a little variety during rodeo week,” Miskimins said. “Where if they do like bull riding in particular, will get a good dose of it on Thursday and then be able to see all of the seven events that are professional rodeo events Friday-throughSunday.” The rodeo committee posted $10,000 in added money for Thursday’s bull riding, while they added $5,000 to the purse per event for the regular rodeo. For the team roping, the committee added $4,000 to the headers purse and $4,000 to the heelers purse. The total payout for the three-day rodeo is $33,000 and it’s in the middle of a busy stretch of rodeos around the country and region. The Burke Stampede Rodeo will be a PRCA-sanctioned event for the first time in 2021, providing another draw for cowboys coming through South Dakota

and potentially allowing participants to hit up both Mitchell and Burke on the same weekend. Onida-based Sutton Rodeo has provided the bucking stock for the event since its inception and will again this year.

A parade two years in the making will mark the community’s golden anniversary celebration of the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo. “The Golden Age of Rodeo; Five Decades of the Corn Palace Stampede” will be the theme for the parade, which begins at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 17. The parade will start on Main Street at the intersection with Ninth Avenue, travel south past the Corn Palace to First Avenue, continue east one block onto Lawler Street and continue back north on Lawler. the parade is viewed as one of the most attractive events in Mitchell, a sure sign of summer that attracts thousands of people to downtown. “We wouldn’t have a parade without the community of Mitchell,” Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo Parade Chairman Mike Dittmer said. “The Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo is Mitchell and it is part of the community.” In 2019, the theme for the parade was “Space Cowboys” and that was intended to lay the foundation for the big 50th celebration in 2020, but due to coronavirus, 2021 will be the year the city celebrates. “Fifty years is too big of a milestone to just let go by the wayside,” Dittmer said. A year ago, the desire for a community parade on the third Saturday in
July was still apparent, even amid COVID-19. After rodeo organizers canceled all events, a replacement parade to honor essential workers was scheduled on the regular date in 2020 but was later canceled, backing away the week of the parade when considering the potential health risk for employees and community members. This year’s parade will feature many of the regular participants, and will mark a return of the parade decoration and float contest categories. Those categories include youth, antique, horsedrawn, humorous, commercial, Shrine, retail, equestrian, the best use of the parade theme and all-around float. As usual, the parade will be judged from the area of the Corn Palace at Sixth Avenue and Main
Street, and participants are reminded As for how the parade will be received, Dittmer expects it to be a bigger turnout than years past. “People want to get out and enjoy the outdoors because the pandemic put a kink in everything, so I think we’re going to see big numbers,” Dittmer said, adding that they’re expecting between 100 and 150 parade participants. One planned part of the 50-year celebration won’t take place because of the coronavirus’ impact. The world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales were scheduled to be a part of the parade and the rodeo entertainment in 2020 before coronavirus, but unfortunately couldn’t be rescheduled for this year’s edition.

An event-by-event look at the contests of professional rodeo
Throughout this special section, there are explanations of each event at the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo. The explanations are reprinted with permission from the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and prorodeo.com.
Bareback riding
Bareback riding is one of the most physically demanding events in rodeo. A bareback rider sits directly on a bucking horse, with only his own “riggin’” to hang onto. As the horse comes out of the chute, the cowboy’s feet must be
above the break of the horse’s shoulders. He holds his feet up at least through the horse’s first move, usually a jump, then spurs the horse on each jump, matching the horse’s rhythm and showing control rather than flopping around. He may not touch the horse, his equipment or himself with his free hand. If the ride lasts eight seconds, two judges award up to 25 points each for the cowboy’s “exposure” to the strength of the horse and his spurring technique and up to 25 points each for the horse’s bucking strength and moves.
Steer wrestling
Steer wrestling demands coordination between two mounted cowboys — the contestant and a hazer who controls the steer’s direction — and their horses. The cowboys back their horses into the box on each side of the steer. When the contestant nods, the chute gate opens and the steer gets a head start before the cowboys start to chase him. As the steer wrestler draws even, he dismounts from his horse, which is moving at perhaps 30 miles an hour. He grasps the steer’s horns and digs his boot heels into
the dirt to slow down the 500- to 600-pound steer. Then he wrestles the steer onto its side; when all four legs point in the same direction, the clock stops. Times vary widely depending on the size of the arena.
Team roping
Team ropers work as partners: one header and one heeler who move in precise coordination. They and their horses start in the “box.” When the header nods, the chute gate opens and the steer gets a head start. The header throws the first loop, which must catch the steer’s head or horns,
protected by a horn wrap. Then the header dallies — wraps his rope around his saddle horn — and moves his horse to pull the rope taut, changing the direction of the steer. That gives the heeler the opportunity to catch both of the steer’s hind legs with his own rope; most heelers try to time their throws to catch the legs when they are in the air. After the catch, the heeler also dallies, to stop the steer. When the ropes are taut and both horses face the steer, the time is recorded. Times vary widely depending on the size of the arena.
Saddle bronc riding In rodeo’s classic event, the saddle bronc rider sits on a specialized saddle – it has no horn, and the stirrups are set forward. In the chute, the cowboy adjusts his grip on the rein and perhaps the horse’s position. When the gate opens, his boots must be above the breaks of the horse’s shoulders. After the horse’s first move, usually a jump, the cowboy begins spurring in long, smooth strokes, in sync with the horse’s jumps – legs straight when the bronc comes down, toward the back of

the saddle at the top of the jump. His only handhold is a six-foot braided rope; his free hand may not touch his equipment, his body or the horse. If the ride lasts the required eight seconds, it is scored by two judges – one on each side – who assess difficulty and control. Each judge awards up to 25 points for the cowboy’s performance and up to 25 points for the animal’s performance, for a potential of 100 points.
Tie-down roping
To start this sprinting event, the tie-down roper and his horse back into the box; the cowboy carries a rope in one hand and a “piggin’ string” in his mouth. When the cowboy nods, the chute opens and the calf gets a head start. The cowboy throws a loop over its head; his horse stops and
pulls the rope taut while the cowboy jumps off, dashes down the rope, lays the calf on the ground and uses the piggin’ string to tie any three of its legs together. Then he lifts his hands to show he is finished, and the field flag judge drops a flag to stop the clock. The horse is trained to keep the rope taut until the cowboy remounts and moves the horse toward the calf, giving the rope slack. If the calf’s legs stay tied correctly for six seconds, it’s a qualified run and the time stands.
Barrel racing
Barrel racing is just that – a race against time in a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels set up in the arena. A rider can choose to begin the cloverleaf pattern to the right or left. The time begins when the horse and rider cross the predetermined start line and stops when they come back across the same line. Each run is timed to the hundredths of a second, making every fraction
of a second count. (Starting in 2012, Canadian rodeos now time to the thousandth of a second.) Each tippedover barrel adds a five-second penalty to the time. Although barrel racing is one of seven events common to many PRCA-sanctioned rodeos, it is administered by a separate organization, the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association.
Bull riding
Bull riding is rodeo’s most dangerous event. In the chute, the bull rider settles on the bull’s back, wraps his braided rope around the bull’s girth, then loops the rope around his hand and back into his palm so he can grip it tightly. When he nods, the gate is opened and the bull lunges out of the chute. Spurring is optional – the primary goal for the cowboy is to stay on for eight seconds without touching himself, his equipment or the bull with his free hand. The cowboy will be
JULY 10, 2021 | 15
scored highly for staying in the middle of the bull, in full control of the ride. If the ride lasts the required eight seconds, it is scored by two judges who assess difficulty (the bull’s spinning, jumping and kicking, lunging, rearing and dropping, and sideto-side motion) as well as the cowboy’s degree of control. Each judge awards up to 25 points for the cowboy’s performance and up to 25 points for the animal’s performance, for a potential of 100 points.
Steer roping
Some PRCA rodeos include steer roping, which resembles tie-down roping but requires the cowboy to catch and control a large steer (about 450-600 pounds.). The mounted cowboy backs into the box and nods when he’s ready; the steer gets a head start, just as the calf does in tie-down roping. The cowboy must catch the steer by first roping it around the horns, which are protected by horn wraps and reinforced with
rebar. Then he tosses the rope over the steer’s right hip and rides to the left, bringing the steer to the ground, a frontier technique modern ranch cowboys still use to bring down full-grown steers that need medical attention. When the steer is lying on its side and the rope is taut, the rider dismounts and runs to the steer, tying any three of its legs. As in tie-down roping, the steer’s legs must remain tied for six seconds after the tie is complete and the roper remounts his horse.
All-around
Many cowboys compete in more than one event. Some rodeo committees award a special prize to the top moneyearner among all the cowboys who entered more than one event at their rodeos, starting with the cowboy who won the most money in two or more events — the all-around champion, a prestigious title indeed. Terms to know before going to the rodeo The growing popularity of rodeo, which, according to the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association attracts 30 million fans each year, has piqued the curiosity of many people who have never before attended a rodeo or watched an event on television. Upon discovering the rodeo, men, women and children often find it as compelling if not more compelling than most popular mainstream sports. For those interested in rodeo but uncertain about its terminology, the following are a few terms to know, courtesy of the PRCA.
► Barrelman: An entertainer who uses a barrel to distract a bull after a ride. Such distractions sometimes protect the cowboy. ► Breaking the barrier: This occurs during a timed event when a rider leaves the box too soon, failing to give the bull a sufficient head start. Riders who break the barrier are assessed a 10-second penalty. ► Bullfighter: An athlete who protects the bull rider after he dismounts or is bucked off. A bullfighter can distract the bull by directing its attention
to the exit gate or even stepping between the bull and the bull rider.
on-site draw shortly before each rodeo begins.
the contestant to make sure the steer runs straight.
► Chute: a pen that holds an animal safely in position.
► Flags: used in rodeo’s timed events so judges can signal the timers to stop the clocks. Judges in the arena will drop the flags.
► Hooey: the knot a cowboy uses to finish tying the calf’s legs together in tie-down roping.
► Covering: this occurs during roughstock events when a rider stays on at least the minimum time of eight seconds. ► Draw: Conducted three days before each PRCA rodeo, the draw is random and assigns each roughstock competitor a specific bucking horse or bull. Time-event contestants are assigned a calf or steer in a random
► Flankman: a cowboy or cowgirl who works in the bucking chutes, adjusting the flank strap around the animal before the ride. ► Go-round: each round of competition in a rodeo. ► Hazer: the cowboy who rides on the right side of the steer from
► Piggin’ string: the small rope used to tie a calf’s legs together in tie-down roping. ► Rank: an adjective of praise and respect used to describe especially challenging roughstock. ► Riggin’: a suitcase-style handhold customized to a rider’s grip and attached to a
molded piece of leather that is cinched, with a pad, around the horse’s girth. ► Roughstock: the bucking horses and bulls used in bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding, usually bred and raised for the job. ► Stock contractors: the companies that bring livestock to the arena for rodeos. ► Triple Crown Winner: a cowboy who wins three world championships in the same year. Sanborn Central senior-to-be earns Professional Bull Riders card LETCHER — Mason Moody wasted little time purchasing his Professional Bull Riders card. The Letcher bull rider turned 18 years old — the required age for PBR membership — on April 3 and one day later, he purchased his tour card. Soon after, he competed in his first PBR event on May 21-22 in Sioux City, Iowa, continuing his dream of becoming a professional bull rider. “I kind of grew into it and started on steers, junior bulls, senior bulls and now we are onto professional bulls,” Moody said. “I kind of started as a toddler and worked my way up.” He’s worked his way up the PBR ladder, too. PBR has three stages — Touring Pro (entry level), Velocity Tour (mid-level) and Unleash the Beast (premier level) — of competition. Moody tried to enter some entry level events, but said it didn’t work
out and was an alternate for one in Missouri. Instead, his first PBR event was the Velocity Tour event in Sioux City. “It is kind of rare to get your first invite to one of them,” said Moody, who will be a senior this fall at Sanborn Central High School. “Because usually you start out at the lower levels and work your way up, but it just worked out that I got into Sioux City at a velocity.” In Sioux City, he failed to finish the required eight-second rides both nights. He admits the bright lights may have gotten the better of him, but he also gained experience in the setting. “It wasn’t very good for my confidence, I guess,” Moody said. “But it was at the same time, because you belong there I guess is the way I looked at it. In a way you have to look at it as another bull riding.”
As far as the bulls, Moody wasn’t overwhelmed by them and said he wasn’t intimidated riding bulls of that stature. “I didn’t get too nervous,” Moody said. “The bulls didn’t scare you because I have been on bulls of that caliber before and I have seen some of those guys before. I would say in a way they were bigger and more powerful, but they weren’t nothing I shouldn’t be able to ride.” Up next, Moody plans to ride at PBR, Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and South Dakota Rodeo Association events. He recently qualified for the National High School Finals Rodeo on July 18-24 in Lincoln, Nebraska. In mid-June, he was the South Dakota High School Rodeo Association bull riding champion, with the top score at the state finals and the season-long points victory.

Moody will travel with seven-time PBR World Finals qualifier, Matt Triplett, for the PBR events in North Dakota and Tennessee. The Montana native currently lives in Canton and that led to the pair forming a friendship. “I decided to go with the PBR for the most part because that’s what Triplett is currently in and he is able to travel with me,” Moody said. “He kind of knows everything and everywhere for that. He’s kind of been a great role model for me to get my start.” Moody’s sisters — Logan, Bailey and Madi — are also active in rodeo, while their parents, Perry and Tracy Moody, have been instrumental in fostering the family sport. “They don’t deserve enough credit,” Mason said. “I have got a lot of bucking bulls standing here that I practice on in the arena.”
