Mitchell Rotary Celebrating 100 Years

I

am sure, for many, the first thought of Rotary brings visions of blue football books and cheering for a certain score during Monday Night Football. While those football books serve as an important fundraiser for the club, there is much more to Rotary. The proceeds from those football books along with sponsorships from generous businesses have helped provide scholarships to Mitchell students over the past 31 years. Our club is also instilling our purpose of service, reflected in our motto, Service Above Self, through the support and sponsorship of an Interact Will Flett Club at Second Chance High School. Interact helps develop leadership skills while students discover the power of service. These are just two ways we are investing in the future of the Mitchell community. The impact of Rotary goes beyond Mitchell. Our local club is part of a network of 1.2 million members in 35,633 clubs in nearly every country of the world. The Rotary Foundation supports projects across this network, from wiping out 99.9% of polio cases to supporting clean water and strengthening local economies. I am proud of our local Rotary members who have donated over $337,520 to the Rotary Foundation to support clubs around the world doing this incredible work. I invite you to join us as we celebrate 100 years of Service Above Self in the Mitchell community. We will be holding a celebration in Rotary Park at 7th and Main from 5 – 8 p.m. on June 1, in conjunction with 1st Fridays on Main. Our Rotarians will be wearing blue shirts. If you have an interest in not only serving our local community but also being part of an organization with a global impact, ask a member how to become part of Rotary. Yours in Service, Will Flett President, Mitchell Rotary Club, 2017-18

Service Above Self ROTARY BEGINNINGS

The history of Rotary International began the evening of February 23, 1905, in Chicago when Paul Harris, the founder, and three of his friends met for the first time. They called it Rotary because they rotated among each other’s places of business for the meetings. As their membership continued to grow it became evident that they would need larger spaces, so they began meeting in hotels and restaurants. San Francisco was the site of the second Rotary club and Oakland, across the bay, was the third club. Rotary International began in 1910 with the formation of a Rotary club in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Rotary districts were set up in 1916; by 1921 Rotary was represented on six continents. The name Rotary International was officially adopted one year later. Rotarians have always promoted world peace and because of that, 50 Rotarians served as delegates, advisors and consultants at the U.N. Charter Conference in 1945. There are more than 1 million Rotarians around the world who promote peace, better health and education.

ROTARY CLUB OF MITCHELL

The proud history of the Mitchell Rotary Club

began when it was chartered on December 28,1917, with a charter membership of 24 men who were recognized leaders and businessmen of great respect in Mitchell. Mitchell’s Rotary club was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Sioux Falls. Rotary’s motto is “Service Above Self.” The Rotary Club of Mitchell strives to live by that motto by sup-porting the Rotary Group Study Exchange and Foreign Student Exchange. Rotary also sponsors the Rotary Scholarship recognition dinner at which scholarships are awarded to many local high school seniors. Today our club has more than 58 members who are committed to Rotary and its Four–Way Test: I. Is it the TRUTH? II. Is it FAIR to all concerned? III. Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? IV. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL

Rotary is a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world. Approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 35,600 Rotary clubs located in 166 countries.

Object of Rotary The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basic of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: 1. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service. 2. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by each Rotarian of his occupations as an opportunity to serve society; 3. The application of the ideal of service by every Rotarian to his or her personal, business and community life; 4. The advancement of international understanding, good will, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional men & women united in the ideal of service.

Four Way Test

1. Is it the Truth? 2. Is it fair to all concerned? 3. Will it build good will and better friendships? 4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Rotary club membership represents a cross-section of the community’s business and professional men and women. The world’s Rotary clubs meet weekly and are nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. The main objective of Rotary is service — in the community, in the work-place, and throughout the world. Rotarians develop community service projects that address many of today’s most critical issues, such as children at risk, poverty and hunger, the environment, illiteracy, and violence. They also support programs for youth, educational opportunities and international exchanges for students, teachers, and other professionals, and vocational and career development.

Rotary Park Project

SELECTING THE CLUB PROJECT - 2005

Selecting a project that was worthy of commemorating Rotary International’s 100th anniversary was not an easy task, as the members of the Mitchell Rotary Club Centennial Committee discovered at their organizational meeting on Sept. 11, 2003. Rotary International was beginning their year-long commemoration beginning on February 2004 and culminating it with a world-wide celebration on Feb. 23, 2005. With that timeline in mind, local Rotarians met twice a month to select this project. Suggestions from members were varied and imaginative. They ranged from a laser show outside the Corn Palace, to a fountain in downtown Mitchell, to a water park for children adjacent to the proposed Hitchcock swimming pool, to a clock tower. The committee decided that the project had to be doable and feasible. The community of Mitchell would have to benefit from the project. And, it should provide a lasting legacy to Rotary International, the Mitchell Rotary Club and the ideals of Rotary. By the last week of October 2003, the Centennial Committee had narrowed their choices to either a fountain or a clock in downtown Mitchell. Because the fountain was thought to have a greater liability and maintenance concerns, the committee selected a clock tower as its project. After numerous telephone conversations with Electric Time, Inc. the committee determined that a $15,000 clock project would fit into the overall goal of locating it in Rotary Park. There would be additional expenses related to the installation and wiring of the clock and developing the park concept.

CLOCK FACTS

The Mitchell Rotary Club commemorated Rotary International’s Centennial celebration with a capstone project by placing a clock in downtown Mitchell. The clock serves as the anchor for Rotary Park which is located at the intersection of Main Street. and Seventh Avenue. Electric Time, Inc., located in Medfield, Massachusetts has created clocks for numerous Rotary Clubs nationwide. Its clocks can be also found at Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri, Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida and Los Altos, California. The Rotary clock, called a Small Four-Dial Howard Post Clock, cost about $15,000, not including installation. It’s a four-sided post clock with a backlit Rotary emblem on the face. The post is green, the same color as the street light poles in downtown Mitchell. Ten feet, eight and one-fourth inches high, the clock is raised off the ground another one to two feet and have an overall height of approximately twelve feet. A unique feature of the clock is that it uses a global positioning system to update the time after a power outage. It automatically updates twice a year for daylight savings time.

The toughest part of the project, Clark said, was disassembling and reassembling the clock itself. Clark was effusive in his praise of the efforts from Muth Electric. “They deserve the credit,” said Pat Clark, a member of the Mitchell Rotary. “They took the initiative to fix it and make it happen.”

UPDATING TIME

The clock was recently updated through work by Muth Electric. The clock had not been illuminated for much of the last decade. When it was mentioned that the Rotary chapter was looking to get the lighting going after about a decade of dormancy, Paul Muth, the Muth Electric’s co-president, worked up a quick fix for the clock. “We originally put the lights up (when it was first installed),” Muth said. “We mostly just changed the lighting out and put in the LED lighting. It wasn’t a huge project, but it was an update.”

Early History of the Mitchell Rotary Club

T

he world wide organization of Rotary Club began in 1905 in Chicago with four men meeting for luncheon and fellowship. The idea originated with a young lawyer, Paul Harris, with no thought that it would become international. The 1915 convention at San Francisco started the “District” organization and installation of the first Dakota Governors. Ours was known as District 10, including Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota. Then Nebraska had two clubs, Iowa seven and Dakotas none. That same year clubs were originated in Sioux Falls and Aberdeen with John Knutson of Sioux City as District Governor. Our district today is all of South Dakota, nine clubs in Iowa, four in Minnesota and one in Nebraska. For many years we were District 561. Recently, it was changed to 5610 because the computer software required four numbers. In 1917, District Governor Amos Ayres of Sioux Falls suggested to Roy Ronald that he try to organize a Rotary Club in Mitchell, S.D. Roy selected William Smith, Robert Burns, Ticknor Litchfield and Frank Herrick to work with him as an organization committee. After several committee meetings a charter membership roll of 24 men was completed. On Dec. 28, 1917, the organization meeting was held following a dinner at the Elks Club. Sioux Falls Rotary sponsored the Mitchell Club. Mitchell Rotary Charter #357 is dated Feb. 1, 1918. Initiation fee then was $5.00 and annual due’s $10.00 not including the meals. At first, meetings were held every two weeks, but this soon changed to weekly meetings, held for the first 45 years in the basement of the Episcopal church. Meals were excellent. One serving of meat to each member, and the rest served family style. The Lawler Cafe served as the meeting place beginning January 1963. This served as the meeting

place until June 1970 when the cafe changed ownership. The club meetings moved to the Holy Family Catholic Church basement. In June 1973, the ladies of Holy Family Catholic Church grew weary and the club meeting moved to the Holiday Inn.

June of 1919 saw the beginning of the “The Rotary Whistle,” a club publication issued each week and edited by secretary Roy Ronald. This single page printed club bulletin gave details of the interesting programs enjoyed by the club at the regular meetings. Publication of the “Whistle” ended in 1928 because the cost

of publishing and postage had reached $317 for the year. When Carl Sprunger was the president of Mitchell Rotary, he asked Frank Lockridge to be the editor of the club bulletin. They decided to retain the same name for the new publication. Frank served as editor for two years. Frank Herrick was elected as the first Mitchell Rotary President. He grew up in Rockford, IL and then entered employment of Forest City Electric Company. He moved to Mitchell in 1905 and was employed at the Turner Creamery, which was located south of the present Mitchell Fire Station. In 1911, he reorganized the company and purchased Mr. Turner’s shares in 1921. He served as president of the company until 1926 when he sold his shares to A.S. Hanford. Herrick was always active in the Chamber of Commerce affairs; he was hired as the secretary of the organization in 1927. He held this position for three years until he started the Herrick Motor company with the Studebaker distributorship. He sold his business in 1936 at which time he was appointed as business manger of the Mitchell School District, a position he held until he died in 1948. He was very active in the Mitchell community. He served on the Mitchell School Board for 12 years and a member of the Congregational Church for 43 years. For many years he was active in that church as a leader, in its Sunday school and on various boards. He became a director of the Mitchell National Bank in 1924, a member of the Masonic Lodge and Republican Party. Frank was well respected in the Mitchell community and especially in Mitchell Rotary Club. Mitchell Rotary honored him by selecting him as their first president. We have the Mitchell Rotary History today because he kept a scrapbook of all the newspaper clippings for 30 years. We enjoy Rotary today because of his dedication to the club.

T

he Rotary Foundation is a non-profit corporation that supports the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational and cultural exchange programs. It is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world. Polio eradication is Rotary’s top philanthropic priority. When Rotary launched the Polio Plus program in 1985, there were more than 350,000 polio cases in over 125 countries. Since 1988, when Rotary began working with its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative to immunize more than 2.5 billion children, the incidence of polio has decreased 99.9 percent. As of 2017, Rotary Foundations contribution to the global polio eradication effort totaled $1.7 billion. Over the years, Mitchell Rotarians have generously contributed $337,720 to the Rotary Foundation. The Mitchell club has the distinction of achieving 235 Paul Harris Fellowships. Paul Harris Fellow recognition is given in appreciation to any member who contributes a gift of $1000 or more to the Rotary Foundation Annual Fund.
