The Beach Boys kick off the grandstand’s concert series on Friday, with Little Big Town and their opener Hailey Steele taking the stage on Saturday night. “We’re excited to have Hailey, she’s a South Dakotan,” Briley said. “It’ll be great having that connector onstage.” The concert series finishes up with the Brothers Osborne and their opener Travis Denning on Sunday and the “Thunder at the Fair” Outlaw Truck and Tractor Pull concludes the grandstand events with an action-packed show on Monday. New events add to traditional lineup By Abbie Lambert The Daily Republic

Along with the traditional events of entertainment, livestock competitions and carnival rides, the South Dakota State Fair adds new and exciting events to the fair schedule, allowing fairgoers to experience and see something new every year. Following the roar of the tiger will lead fairgoers north of the AARP Centennial Stage to the Bengal Tiger Encounter. It’s been 13 years since the state fair has seen a tiger act, but this year that will change. “We’re really excited to bring this show in,” Assistant Manager Candi Briley said. “Fairgoers are going to love it.” People may have another close encounter with a group of exotic “animals” roaming the streets of the fairgrounds. Known as the Animal Cracker

Conspiracy Stilt Walkers, the taller-than-life stilt characters will wander the grounds daily wowing audiences with their puppetry and mixed media performances. “Several years ago at a fair convention I came across this group, and it left an impression in my mind that this year when we were looking for something to bring in I remembered them,” Briley said. “I’m really excited for fairgoers to see them.” Although there is no classic rock entertainment at the grandstand this year, fairgoers have the chance to hear the sounds of their favorite rock bands on the NorthWestern Energy Freedom stage. Fairgoers can enjoy performances by Killer Queen, recreating the music of Queen, Gypsies, Doves and Dreams, a tribute to Stevie Nicks, Elton Dan and The Rocket Band, play a tribute to Elton John and the

popular Abbey Road, playing Beatles music. “When we announced our grandstand lineup this year some people had called us and said they appreciated classic rock a little more,” Briley said. “If you think that is missing from the grandstand lineup you can always check it out on the Freedom stage.” The award-winning children’s performer Phil Baker will be back at the fair with his children’s music shows. Special to the fair this year is Baker’s Sensory Friendly Music Show for All Ages which is focused toward accommodating audience members who experience sensory issues related to autism, overstimulation and verbal expression. “I’m excited to be working with Phil Baker,” Briley said. “One of his shows is going to be his sensory friendly show — that’s going to be a nice

addition to the fair.” Baker will perform two special sensory shows during the fair on the Farm Bureau Dakotaland Stage. For those who love the thrill of solving a puzzle, Boy Scout Troop 151 of Huron has put together several escape rooms for fairgoers to enjoy. The escaping will take place in Younger Hall and Briley said the fair is looking forward to bringing a new attraction to attendees. “There will be a small cost to participate in the escape room but we’re really excited for that,” Briley said. “There is so much tradition that encompasses the fair, especially when you think about the generations of families, but there is also a lot about the fair where you feature a lot of the modern day and new and up and coming things,” Fair Manager Peggy Besch said.

Making the state fair easier:

things you need to know By Abbie Lambert The Daily Republic

The State Fair has made great strides to provide services and make a day at the fair smooth and comfortable for everyone who attends. The grandstand saw a much needed update to the accessibility and configuration of the seats. Lighted handrails, safety lighting and ADA seating were installed to help people safely enjoy the entertainment the grandstand provides. “That was a huge and major improvement,” SD State Fair Assistant Manager Candi Briley said. “Fairgoers and concertgoers are definitely going to welcome those handrails when they come to the fair this year.” According to Fairgrounds Manager Peggy Besch, the recent improvements were part of phase three of a four-phase project that began in 2017. The third phase began right after last year’s fair and was scheduled to be completed in late May, but Besch said the wet weather delayed the project. “With Mother Nature and the way

she’s been for everybody this summer it’s really set us back,” Besch said. “It’s very close to being completed and it’ll be ready for fair.” Another upgrade to the fair is electronic admission. Admission passes can now be purchased online through the state fair website. The state fair staff hopes the electronic tickets speed up the process at the entry gates. “We’ve never done that before,” Briley said. “You can email it to yourself or we can mail it to you.” In addition to the transition to electronic tickets, fairgoers can expect changes at the entry gates as well. “We’ve changed our admissions process where it will all be electronic and automated,” Briley said. “When people come to the fair, they can expect to see some efficiencies and more convenience for them as they enter the fairgrounds.” Along with the electronic additions to the admission process, the state fair has an app fairgoers can download to get the full schedule and a detailed map of the fairgrounds.

(Abbie Lambert / Republic)

The South Dakota State Fair app is available for download for iOS and android devices.

“The fair app is your one-stop shop for the fair schedule,” Briley said. “It makes it very convenient.” The app, which is available for download for iOS and Android devices, displays the daily schedule of events and categorizes events, making it simple and easy for fairgoers and competitors to find times and locations of events. Finding parking close to the fairgrounds is always a challenge, but this year fairgoers can park at the Huron Mall and arrive at the entry gate without taking a step. “Parking is always a challenge

Events to seek out:

BENGAL TIGER ENCOUNTER: Performances at 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Thursday through Monday north of the AARP Centennial Stage. ANIMAL CRACKER CONSPIRACY STILT WALKERS: Encounter the characters anytime and anywhere! PHIL BAKER’S SENSORY FRIENDLY MUSIC SHOW: Baker welcomes sensory-sensitive fairgoers to two performances on Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m. on the Farm Bureau Dakotaland Stage. BOY SCOUT TROOP 151 ESCAPE ROOMS: Solve the puzzle and escape the room, located in Younger Hall.

around the fairgrounds during the fair,” Briley said. “We’ve worked with the Huron chamber this year to make it quicker and more convenient.” The fair bus shuttle will make trips to and from the mall parking lot every 30 minutes for the duration of the fair. The shuttle will run Thursday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Monday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Instead of stopping at several gates around the fairgrounds, fairgoers riding the shuttle from the Huron Mall will be dropped off at gate three. “The big thing is that it’s free to park and ride,” Briley said. “It takes away the hassle of trying to find a parking place around the fairgrounds.” Once in the fairgrounds, there are several options for transportation besides walking. Free trolleys drive throughout the grounds from open to close everyday and a fleet of courtesy golf carts stationed at all gates and throughout the fairgrounds provide free rides to different parts of the fair. Personal scooters can be rented by contacting the fair office for those who want a personal ride. With the new improvements and services, attending the fair has never been easier. The state fair staff hopes the changes help make the fair experience more enjoyable.

State Fair 4-H: much more than contests and exhibits By Abbie Lambert The Daily Republic

This year’s fair theme, “There’s No Time Like Fair Time,” rings more than true with the state’s 4-H members who work tirelessly upholding their pledge to put their head, heart, hands and health into each static, presentation, and livestock exhibit. The State Fair gives 4-H’ers the opportunity to showcase the hard work they’ve put into it throughout the year. “It is a time for our 4-H members to share their passions with the public, educating them on all of the knowledge they have gained throughout the

year,” Amber Erickson, SDSU Extension 4-H Youth Development Field Operations Coordinator, said. Last year 2,740 4-H’ers participated in the State Fair entering static, Youth in Action and livestock exhibits. 4-H participation in the State Fair has remained strong for the past several years and last year saw an increase in livestock and Youth in Action exhibits of 3 percent and 14 percent, respectively. “It (State Fair) is a culmination of their time, dedication, and effort from throughout the summer and entire 4-H year,” John Keimig, SDSU Extension Youth Safety Field Specialist, said. “This is the opportunity to

showcase those efforts and be recognized for them.” The 4-H buildings are open to the public from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday through Sunday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday. Fairgoers can admire static entries within the Nordby Exhibit Hall or watch a livestock show within one of the barns or animal complexes located on the fairgrounds. In addition to admiring 4-H members’ hard work, the public is invited to participate in the education programs, “Green Habits on the Go” and “Biosecurity: Escape Room.” Run by the State 4-H Ambassadors, the educational programming will take place south of the 4-H Ag Center

on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Also, hands-on educational programming for 4-H, Youth and Community will be available in the Nordby Exhibit Hall. For many 4-H members and their families, State Fair is much more than competitions and exhibits, it’s a time of memories, traditions, fun and friendships. “While participating in contests and exhibiting their projects is important, 4-H members look forward to the State Fair to create new memories and lasting friendships,” Amanda Stade, SDSU Extension State 4-H Events Management Coordinator, said.
