MHS boys hoops embraces high expectations in new season Kernels have made three state tourneys in a row, including taking second in 2023 By Landon Dierks Mitchell Republic

M I TCH E LL oming off a state runnerup finish last season, excitement and expectations continue to rise within the Mitchell High School boys basketball program. With three consecutive state tournament appearances, a standard of excellence has been restored to the program, but now the onus of maintaining that standard falls to a new class of Kernels. Where recent MHS squads have benefited from a surplus of veteran leadership and experience, the 2023-24 Kernels roster features three players who contributed regular varsity minutes

from last season’s run. “We’re going to have to learn as we go,” said head coach Ryker Kreutzfeldt, now in his third season as Kernels’ leader. “That’s just how this year is going to be.” However, forming a rotation around the trio of Gavin Soukup, Markus Talley and Colton Smith provides a solid base for the youthful MHS roster, which enters the new season with the No. 4 ranking in Class AA in the South Dakota Prep Media poll. Smith, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, provided a spark off the bench last season and is Mitchell’s top returning scorer and rebounder at 9.7 points on 67% shooting along with 5.3 rebounds per game. Talley, a 6-foot junior became a mainstay in

the starting lineup, averaging 8.1 points on 45% shooting from 3-point range and 2.7 rebounds per game after beginning the season in a bench role. Soukup, a 6-foot2 senior, posted 5.9 points and 1.7 assists per game last season, primarily coming off the bench. “I think all three of them are some of the best at their positions in Class AA,” Kreutzfeldt said of his returning trio. “You can’t really ask for much more than that, it’s a great place to start from. “The hard part is getting the complementary pieces and figuring what role they can play to help us win,” he continued. “That’s what we’re working through right now is finding those pieces and playing to

the strengths of all of our guys.” Mitchell will start the season with just nine players on the varsity roster, with the returning core surrounded by seniors Nicholas Moller and Abraham Gunnare and juniors Landen Soulek, Parker Mandel, Sutton Thompson and Gavin Hinker. In that group, the complementary attributes Kreutzfeldt is looking for include defensive toughness and finding at least one more regular scorer who can help share the scoring burden with Soukup, Talley and Smith. Though the 202324 Kernels aren’t starting from a point quite as far along as some of their recent counterparts, Kreutzfeldt has praised them for

their willingness to accept whatever role benefits the team most as MHS works to maintain their high expectations. “They’re really interested in figuring out how to win games and staying at the standard we’ve set over the past few years,” Kreutzfeldt said. “This group understands what Kernel basketball means and how hard they have to work, and they want to do whatever it takes to get there. That’s been a lot of fun to see. “It’s so hard to coach how to play together, and it can be hard to be patient because we’ve had two groups back-to-back that had it figured out right away,” he added. “But my assistants are preaching patience to

me, and I’m preaching it to the guys as we work through it.” After a seasonopening win at Huron, Mitchell has seven consecutive games at the Corn Palace, including the Hoop City Classic contests against Thunder Basin (Wyo.) and DeLaSalle (Minn.) on Dec. 29 and 30 and a rematch of the 2023 Class AA title game against Yankton on Jan. 5. “I think there’s going to be a lot of parity. There are a lot of teams that have new groups of kids coming in, including us,” Kreutzfeldt said of his expectations within Class AA this season. “It feels like nobody really knows what’s going to happen, and the preseason rankings will be interesting because of that.”

Mitchell girls basketball looks to build upon last year’s strong finish Four starters, eight letterwinners back after surprise state appearance By Jacob Nielson Mitchell Republic

M I TCH E LL ine months ago, the Kernel girls basketball proved capable of winning big games when they upset the fifth-seeded team in Class AA, Brandon Valley, in the SoDak 16. Now, with a year under their belts, the Mitchell girls look to ride off that late-season momentum — which ended in a sixth-place finish at the state tournament — and improve upon a 10-14 season record. “I think it just shows what we can do and what we can build here,” senior Sawyer Stoebner said about last year’s finish. “And I think with our coaches, we’re capable of getting to where we want to be, and finishing pretty well this year.” Mitchell, which started three underclassmen a season ago, comes into the 2023-24 season with confidence, knowing it returns four starters and eight letterwinners. “I think there’s more expectation this year than there was last year at this time, because we were an unknown commodity,” second-year head coach Dave Brooks said. “ … We’re excited to get the season going and we have a lot of kids returning.” It begins with Stoebner, who averaged 13.9 points and 11.1 rebounds last season to garner all-state first team honors. Starters Carsyn Weich and Lauren VanOverschelde return as juniors, and Addie Siemsen, who started last season, is expected to return to that role as a sophomore. Senior Allison Meyerink,

Brooks added that junior Makenzie Peterson, who began seeing the court at the end of last season, will also see minutes. Beyond the eight returning letterwinners, the coaching staff is figuring out the remainder of the rotation and bench, Brooks said. “Last year was a learning

experience for all of us for sure,” said Stoebner, who is committed to play college basketball at Black Hills State. “And I think that we can only go up from where we were.” Lacking a traditional post presence, don’t expect the Kernels’ guard-heavy roster to adhere to traditional onethrough-five positions. Instead, the team’s athleticism and versatility will be leaned upon for success. And in practices leading up to the season’s start, Mitchell spent time honing in on its strengths. The Original

“We’re working on our transition game,” Brooks said. “We’re not very tall, up-anddown the lineup, but we do have some athletic kids. So we’ve been working on getting the ball out and running and trying to not have to get into the half-court offense as much. The kids have put a lot of time into shooting, and we think that can be our strength. balls. Last season, the Kernels out-rebounded the majority of their opponents despite their lack of size. “I anticipate that will happen again this year,” Brooks said “And the 50-50 balls and the hustle plays, we just have to win.” For Stoebner, the goal her final high school season is to help the team succeed. “I think that we just want to keep it a positive atmosphere,” Stoebner said. “Stay together, play together. And hopefully win together.”

Youthful Kernels wrestling program looks to continue growth New coach leads MHS into season By Landon Dierks Mitchell Republic

M I TCH E LL ntering the 202324 season, the Mitchell High School wrestling program is both experienced and youthful. MHS has three seniors and six juniors for the upcoming campaign between the boys and girls rosters, but the wrestling room is far from empty. From last year’s team, the Kernels return a dozen varsity letterwinners and four state tournament qualifiers, giving the program a solid base to build upon. “We have a lot of kids returning who have wrestled varsity, so we should have that experience carrying us into and through the season,” said firstyear head coach Baker Haar, who was named to the position on Nov. 1. “Even though we’re experienced, we’re still young, so we might still make some mistakes. But I think we need to learn where we’re at and then build off of it.” On the boys’ side, Connor Degen, a state tournament qualifier last season at 195 pounds, and Seth Foote return as seniors, while the likes of Van Johnson, Van Long, Kellan Odell and Dax Gukeisen will be looked to as juniors with experience. Haar identified Johnson and Long as individuals he’s looking for to step into a more full-time position in the varsity lineup and make an impact. Of the underclassmen, freshman Penn Long is coming off a state tournament appearance at 126 pounds last season and Haar hopes

Entering Year 2 of girls wrestling within the MHS program, the Kernels return a pair of state place-winners in sophomore Danny Borja, who was fifth at 120 pounds, and Frankie Kranz, who was seventh at 106. Though a similar number of girls expressed interest to start this season, the Kernels have retained

a larger number compared to last season and expect to start this season with six girls on the roster. Haar stressed that the experience the Kernels bring back goes far beyond the talent they show on the mat in competition. “Obviously, the biggest benefit is the kids come into the year knowing the level they need to be at to wrestle varsity, and they know how to practice with each other,” Haar said. “Knowing how to practice is as important, if not more important, than knowing how to wrestle, and gaining that experience with this group has been

very valuable.” With the sudden resignation of former head coach Andy Everson, who left a month before the start of this season after more than four years leading the program, Haar acknowledged there’s been “a bit of a learning curve” in adjusting to behindthe-scenes coaching responsibilities that he hadn’t had to worry about as an assistant. But what could have been a significant distraction for the Kernels in the lead-up to the new season has been minimized by the athletes’ familiarity with their new head coach. “I think the kids

handled it well. The change was obviously something that several kids addressed, and we talked about it,” Haar said. “But they know me, so that level of trust has already been built and I think that has done a lot for

where we are so far. They’ve been able to trust that I’ve seen and coached enough wrestling over the years to know what I’m talking about and I’m not just making it up as we go.”

Mitchell Christian boys focusing on toughness under new coach Seniors Lieber and Tegethoff to pace Golden Eagles By Jacob Nielson Mitchell Republic

M I TCH E LL t the beginning of the season, each member of the Mitchell Christian basketball team was handed a book to read. “Toughness” by Jay Bilas was the assignment, and as the 2023-24 slate progresses, the team will read the various chapters, and look to translate Bilas’ lessons into their own on-court approach. “We’re trying to build our culture, trying to to rebuild it. It’s been a long time since we’ve had successful basketball at Mitchell Christian,” said firstyear head coach Chris Nemec, who replaced seven-year coach Jesse Tolsma. “So we just have to focus on not just doing the fundamentals well, but getting the mindset correct.” The attributes Nemec hopes his team will learn from the book? Playing competitively, and developing a mental toughness which will help the team when it faces physically superior opponents. “The core message (of the book) is it’s not always physical,” Nemec said. “There are a lot of guys that might be very physically strong, but you put them in a situation where they’re challenged mentally to push through something, they quit immediately. Whereas somebody who is not as strong, they might have much more mental toughness, and be able to push through something.” The Golden Eagles, who finished 9-13 a season ago, embark on the new year with just three upperclassmen: seniors Aiden Lieber and Joseph Tegethoff, and junior Syver Enga. Lieber, who routinely filled the stat sheet last season, including a 40-point effort last season against Sioux Falls Lutheran, is expected to lead the offense once again. Beyond a fourth player who received minutes last season, freshman Silas Holdeman, the rest of the group is inexperienced. There are a total of 12 players on the team, including two eighth graders, and one seventh grader.

“There are a lot of new faces,” Nemec said. “We brought up a couple of eighth graders, we brought up a seventh grader to help us out, fill out our numbers. So we’re very young, and don’t have a lot of experience.” Thus, developing toughness will be paramount. Nemec, a Midland, South Dakota native, and father of four who has helped out with Mitchell Christian athletics off-and-on

throughout the years and has previously coached the Golden Eagles’ girls basketball and volleyball squads. Nemec hopes his team will develop this year, and set the building blocks for what he wants the team to become. “We’re just trying to build a program,” Nemec said. “That’s what we’re focused on top to bottom, just trying to get more kids excited and involved in the basketball program.

And then we hope in the coming years to increase our numbers.” With the current group, expect to see a team that plays fast offensively, looking to move in transition and score easy buckets. “We got a great group of kids,” Nemec said. “They’re all bought in, and they all want to get better. So it’s a great group, we got small numbers, but they’re a solid group.”

Returners, new faces have Kernel gymnastics poised for more success MHS brings back eight letterwinners from state title squad By Marcus Traxler Mitchell Republic

M I TCH E LL t’s a new year, and a new year of Mitchell High School gymnastics. But between the eight returners from the 2023 Class AA state team champions and the mix of new faces and experience, the Kernels hope they’re kicking off another special season in pursuit of a third state championship in four seasons. “We have a really strong group of gymnasts, mixing newcomers and returning girls,” senior Harley Goldammer said. “It’s exciting to be working together early in the season and seeing what we’re capable of.” Much like last season’s message to her athletes, MHS coach Audra Rew said the focus is going to be on where the Kernels stand in February for the state meet and what they need to do to perform their best when championships are decided. Last season ended with a state championship won by three-tenths of a point in the Class AA

team competition over O’Gorman, followed by a school-record effort on individual day (151.150). “Every year is different but I feel like this team has February in mind,” Rew said. “They aren’t stressed right now if things aren’t where they want them to be in February. They’re very calm, deliberate and it’s like they’re just in tunnel vision on what needs to be done long-term. I love that demeanor, but they are also having a great time as a team right now.” Rew said the Kernels have a big roster but one that has great chemistry with each other, which she said bodes well for what they can accomplish this season. “They’re very focused,” Rew said. “There’s not a lot of stress and emotions going on. I love that right now.” Rew pointed to sophomore Olivia Prunty as the lead Kernel to watch, with Prunty placing top-five in four state individual events last season, including third on floor exercise and fifth in all-around. “She’s doing phenomenal,” Rew said of Prunty. “She’s going to be right back up there for us. There’s been no difference for her this year.” There is a tradeoff in

the Kernels’ makeup this season. Mitchell won’t have sophomore Kyanna Gropper in the lineup as she recovers from an offseason knee injury. Gropper placed in the top-five in four of the five individual categories at the state meet last season, including second on balance beam. However, Rew pointed out that Mitchell will have junior Bentley Bates back in the lineup more often in 2023-24 than last season, when she was limited with a foot injury. One to watch is Keyana Kelley, who is returning to competitive gymnastics with the high school team. Rew said Kelley is a phenomenal athlete who will likely factor into the varsity makeup of the team this season. “We lose seniors, we lose Kyanna, we gain Bentley. We have to get Keyana up to speed in the high school gymnastics world, which will happen and she will be a nice addition,” Rew said. “So you lose some and you gain some, so it’s worked out well.” Goldammer and sophomores Abby Helleloid and McKenna Auch are among the other names expected to be key contributors for the Kernels this season, with Goldammer — the lone senior on the team — moving into a role where

she could compete in all four events for MHS. “These kids just needed that opportunity to step up and show us, and they show their skills,” Rew said. “We’ve had some losses and some additions but on paper, with a judge’s scorecard, I don’t know that you’ll be seeing a big difference as a team.”

“I think our team has a good attitude and we’re all supportive of each other,” Olivia Prunty said. “Working well as a group is always important in gymnastics.” Rew said she expects Harrisburg to be the main challenger for a Class AA state championship this season, which will be decided Feb. 9-10 in

Pierre. The Eastern South Dakota Conference meet will be held on Jan. 27 in Watertown. “We know what we’re capable of and that’s competing for a state championship,” Bates said. “There’s a lot of work to be done but that’s a goal for our team.”

Marlins’ boys hockey ready to take another leap forward 13 letterwinners return after first state tournament appearance since 2018 By Blake Durham Mitchell Republic

M I TCH E LL he Mitchell Marlins’ boys hockey team have moved into the new season with a different mindset than before. Coming off its first state tournament appearance since 2018 last year, Mitchell looks to improve on its fifth-place finish in the regular season standings. The Marlins’ goal last season was to make the state tournament. Now, the team has their sights set on the perennial powerhouses in South Dakota. “We’re looking to take a couple steps up in the standings,” head coach Nick Lemke said. “We’re trying to achieve getting

into the top three spots, where Brookings, Sioux Falls, and (Rushmore) tend to be all the time, so we have our hands full trying to knock one of them off.” Lemke stressed the importance of staying out of the penalty box while also making sure the players’ passing leads to opportunities on goal will help the Marlins elevate their game on the ice. With the team returning 13 letterwinners this season, including three of its top pointscorers a year ago, the experience on the team provides Mitchell the best opportunity to start games on the attack. “You want to start out hot at the beginning of the year,” Lemke said. “Whenever you have guys (on the team) that

have played at that level the year before, and not have this big turnover, it makes it a more fluid change. If you can get a couple goals early in any game, it’s definitely good for confidence.” Leading point-scorer from a year ago Levi Loken returns, who has seven goals and four assists so far this season. Loken was fifth in the state in assists (27) last year, pairing on the forward line with Parker Denne, who is also back this year off of a team-leading 29-goal season. The second forward line of Mick Dailey, Tyson Sabers, and Brody Huls, are also expected to play an integral part for the Marlins this season. The trio last year combined for 23 goals and 18 assists.

New to Mitchell’s starting lineup, goaltender Ian Vaughn is in his first season in varsity following a strong season at the junior varsity level sharing the net with Gavin Polreis. Brennen Penne and Connor Degen are two of the defenseman who’ll look to take steps forward following short stints at varsity last year, as the outcome of the Marlins’ games will ultimately be decided in the defensive zone. “If you can shut things down in your zone, that’s going to lead to our offense at the other end” Lemke said. “With the offensive ability of our forwards, if we can play sound defense, the speed we have on offense, I’m very

confident in us getting down to their zone and getting chances (to score goals).” As the Marlins work on adjustments and determining their line combinations, the outlook for their season is one of optimism and confidence, even if

those adjustments take time. “It’s gonna take a little time getting the roster on the same page,” Lemke said. “I definitely like our talent and ability level, and if we can get healthy and stay out of the penalty box, I think we’ll have a successful season.”

Marlin girls hockey building with familiarity, leadership Top-three pointscorers return for new season By Blake Durham Mitchell Republic

M I TCH E LL ith the season already underway, the Mitchell Marlins girls hockey team are looking to find the right combinations on their lines. Coming off a fourth-place finish in last year’s South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association state tournament, the Marlins are figuring out who on the team plays well together on the ice. “We’re still working through our lines right now,” head coach Chris Tronnes said. “We’re moving (our) girls around just to see what works, and we’re still working on a little bit of the team chemistry, especially with our forward lines. But a lot of these girls have played together for a long time, so it makes it nice to plug and play players in different spots.” The familiarity of the players with one another also helps having been on the varsity level before. Mitchell returns 12 letterwinners to the roster from a year ago, including its top-three point scorers. It’s the hope the returning Marlins, many who are only sophomores and juniors, can continue to grow as a team and as individuals.

And you already see the leadership with our sophomores and juniors now. They just take the next step every year, they grow and they mature, and it’ll push us over the edge at some point.” After leading the

state with 31 goals and 47 points as a freshman last year, Brynlee Sabers returns to help lead the Marlins forward line alongside MaKenna Tronnes, who picked up the secondmost assists (16) in state in addition to 17 goals. Top defenseman Resse Amick is also back, having collected a team-leading four goals so far this season, partnering with

Tristen Zimmer on the backline. New to the team is senior goaltender Eva Ramm, a transfer from Sioux Falls who finished with 113 saves last season and three shutouts in net for the Flyers. She’s been able to fit right in with the rest of the Marlins and was voted as one of the assistant captains this year. Ramm has also provided welcomed

experience to the younger players in the Marlins’ system. “She comes to the under-8 practices and helps out with the younger kids,” said Tronnes about Ramm. “She’s been a really good leader and a really good role model for all the younger players. Having her come right in and fit right with the team has been awesome.”

Through these growing periods for the Marlins, the players continue to display their dedication to the team and to the sport of ice hockey. “They put the work in every night,” Tronnes said. “They spend a lot of time at the rink, they spend a lot of time practicing, and a lot of time in the summer with it. It all pays off for them.”

Coach comments: Devyn Anderson, Canyon Burkard and Bryce Reuer are all returning state ualifiers with Canyon Burkard placing two years ago. They all have the ability to stand on the podium this season. Carter Santiago is looking to build off the progress he made last season and earn a trip to state. The kids kept improving throughout the season and we are going to need to do the same this year. This year is going to be one of our youngest teams in a few years with only three seniors. We are going to have a lot of depth and should be fielding a full team. We have a lot of juniors and sophomores, so we will still have experience. These guys keep getting better and it will be exciting to see where we end up. No matter what it’s going to be a great day to be a Warrior.

We will put an athletic team on the floor and look to use that to our advantage on both offense and defense.
