EXPERIENCE SET TO LEAD THE WAY FOR KERNEL FOOTBALL By Branden Hull Mitchell Republic
The Mitchell High School football team believes it has experience on their side heading into this season. There are 22 seniors on the roster and head coach Kent VanOverschelde believes experience will be the team’s biggest strength. “As a team, we need to use that experience that we have going forward because that’s our biggest strength,” VanOverschelde said. “That experience that we have coming back will be the biggest help for us.” Offensively, Mitchell’s senior quarterback Tucker Vilhauer returns to the team and will be used differently in the offense than previous seasons. Last season, he rushed for 10 touchdowns and 990 yards on 138 carries, but his passing ability will be utilized more this season. “We’re going to be able to use that passing game to move the football,” VanOverschelde said. “With both our quarterbacks Tucker Vilhauer and Treyson Schulz having a lot of experience from a year ago, we’ll be able to use the passing game purposefully to
avoid second-and-longs or third-andlongs that force you to throw the football because we have the guys on the perimeter that do a good job catching the ball.” Vilhauer and Schulz will have a strong receiving core that consists of seniors Jace Larson and Carson Fahey, along with juniors A.J. Siemsen and Lukas Bennett. Despite losing Parker Phillips, who led the rushing attack for the Kernels last season with 1,429 yards and 16 touchdowns, to graduation, VanOverschelde believes the run game will be just as stout being led by senior Josh Grosdidier, who had 432 yards on the ground with 13 touchdowns. Grosdidier is also a starting linebacker for the Kernels and had 89 tackles last season. “We’re still going to be able to run the football, there’s no doubt about that,” VanOverschelde said. “Grosdidier is 6-foot-2, 205 pounds, he’ll be significant on both sides of the football.” While the offensive line struggled last season, VanOverschelde has the confidence in his players to be better this season. “We had a lack of experience on
the offensive line last year, but that’s something that we addressed over the course of the summer,” VanOverschelde said. “It might be a question mark, but I have a lot of confidence in the guys.” The Kernels had camps over the summer for the offensive lineman to develop chemistry and develop the proper techniques ahead of a new season. Kendall Fick and Adam Fahey will be the veterans on the offensive line, and Beau Foote will return for Mitchell, but he didn’t play football during the 2020 season. Offensive coordinator Eric Witte now has full responsibility of the offensive scheme, stepping into the lead role after shared coordinator duties for the previous three seasons. VanOverschelde is excited to see Witte as the one putting his stamp on the offense. “I’m excited about his preparation to this point and also about what he can do in that position with the experiences that he has,” VanOverschelde said. On defense, Zack Clement has moved from defensive line coach to the defensive coordinator. The Kernels have worked in the offseason to inject some
life into the defense and play with more confidence. “Every year, we try to evaluate every aspect of our program,” VanOverschelde said. “Probably the biggest thing from a defensive standpoint, it appeared in the past we were sound, but we seemed to be stagnant and that’s a big thing we prioritized this summer.” The defense is led by senior Joseph VanOverschelde who had 124 tackles last season, 65 of them solo. VanOverschelde will also be playing fullback for the Kernels on offense. Coach VanOverschelde is excited for this upcoming season and said the work the team put in this summer makes them a different team from last season. “I’m excited about the ways I’ve seen this team respond to being held accountable,” VanOverschelde said. “We’ve developed trust, but trust through accountability. When someone holds you accountable, you take it as constructive criticism and that’s helped us this offseason. We want to simply do things the right way and our guys have bought into that.”

After two straight state championships, expectations are again high for the Mitchell High School girls tennis team. The Kernels have captured back-to-back Class A girls tennis titles, including last season’s 59-point win over second-place Rapid City Christian. The Kernels return three individual state champs as the expectations are again sky high. “I talked with them a little bit about us having a target on our back and we have to be willing to accept that,” Mitchell coach Pat Moller said. “We have to expect that teams are going to elevate their play against us because when you are the top, it tends to motivate other teams to maybe play better than they would normally. We have to accept that challenge and I think our girls are ready for that.” Mitchell return a host of familiar faces to the lineup. Kiersten Bathke was the lone senior from last season’s team, which also claimed the Eastern South Dakota Conference title. Olivia Huber, Julia Platt and Megan Mastel all return after winning individual state championships. Platt and Delaney Degen claimed a doubles title, while Huber and Bathke also teamed up for a doubles championship. The Kernels started practice Monday and Moller said the host of experienced players have brought a competitive attitude. “I’ve been really impressed with how prepared the girls have been going into this first week of

practice,” Moller said. “We do a lot of challenge matches and typically it’s pretty stressful for the girls, but they’ve all come ready to battle and their focus is where it needs to be and I am really pleased with where we are at.” Mitchell also landed a transfer in Sydney Reynolds, who was the Flight No. 1 singles player last season at Norfolk, Nebraska. But due to Mitchell’s depth, she will play Flight No. 4 singles this season. “She’s a smooth player and a very intelligent player,” Moller said. “She thinks through points well and exposes her opponents’ weaknesses. She’s going to definitely help us out.” Atlanta Stahle, who took fourth at Flight 1 singles last season, will remain in the same spot in the lineup. “She’s looked really strong in practice,” Moller said. “She has definitely blossomed into that team leader role and I think she puts a lot of expectations on herself and rightly so. She’s a very talented player.” Huber and Amber Moller will be Flight No. 2 and No. 3 singles players, respectively. Platt will be No. 5 in the singles lineup, while Mastel is again at No. 6 singles. In the doubles lineup, Huber and Stahle will be the No. 1 team. Moller/Reynolds (Flight 2) and Degen/ Mastel (Flight 3) round out the doubles lineups. “So our lineup is going to look a lot the same as it did last year,” coach Moller said. “Our girls are playing at a higher level than they were last year. I just really look forward to giving them that opportunity to show off their skill.”

We have a lot of experience and they are transferring that experience to the younger players.”
New era under McQuillan embarks for MHS boys soccer By Branden Hull Mitchell Republic The Mitchell boys soccer team has a new first-time head coach coming into this season with varied experience, hoping to establish a competitive culture as the cornerstone of this team’s success. In the recent past, the program has been struggling. They’ve won a combined five games over the previous three seasons and the last time the team won more than two games in an individual season was 2014. MHS coach Sean McQuillan said rather than building a team, they are building a program and even though this process will be tough, it will be more rewarding in the end. “I know that the program is not necessarily one that’s known for winning games, but what I’m trying to install is not winning or losing, it’s being competitive,” McQuillan said. “Being competitive will be keeping the games closer and if we can keep the games closer, then we can get one of two results and the wins and losses will be byproducts of how we portray ourselves.” McQuillan, a native of Glasgow, Scotland, played at Division III
Greenville University (Ill.) from 2009 to 2013 and helped the Panthers to the NCAA Tournament in the 2010 and 2011 seasons. Before being hired as Mitchell’s boys soccer coach, McQuillan was assisting the Dakota Wesleyan University women’s program. He intended on helping Ken Novak, the Kernels previous coach for the last six seasons, during the 2020 season but due to COVID-19 restrictions, he wasn’t able to. McQuillan’s first practice with the team was on Aug. 2 and while he has implemented different passing and possession drills, he still is learning what team he is working with. “Obviously some boys haven’t done this before so what’s easy for me or for one or two other players, may not be easy for them,” McQuillan said. “I’m just trying to gauge who I’ve got and how I can do things.” Mitchell is entering this season with Wyatt Haibeck returning as the lone senior, along with juniors Kaileb Hubbard and Brenen Rose. These three players will be captains of a young team that include six sophomores, two freshmen, five eighth graders and four seventh graders. Despite the team being young,

MHS cheer, dance seek more in 2021 By Marcus Traxler Mitchell Republic The Mitchell High School competitive cheer and dance teams have plenty to build off in 2021. The Kernels’ competitive cheer team was ninth a season ago at the Class AA state meet and scored a school record for points (228.5), a significant step forward for the team under coach Alisha Lockhart. Now the goal is to pick up the progress again and charge ahead, trying to compete with the top teams in the Eastern South Dakota Conference. The team has a big core of 14 returning letterwinners and five seniors are on the roster with Jamie Herren, Heaven Hofer, Chloe Holzwarth, Alyssa Hughes, and Chelsey Mohr. Lockhart said the team has benefitted from having more MHS gymnasts — coming from a program that is a regular state championship contender — participating in cheer, where many of the same attributes carry over to success. “We’ve kind of become known for Mitchell cheer having good tumbling, and having that gymnastics experience is a major reason why,” Lockhart said. “We had some success last year and now we’ve stepped it up this year in our stunting difficulty. It is a challenge for the girls but we’re not going to get better if we don’t push ourselves.” While the difficulty is being increased for Mitchell,
execution remains a high priority because that gives the Kernels a chance to close the gap on teams with a traditionally high level of difficulty, such as from the Sioux Falls high schools. “We know our execution has to be flawless, because we might be able to make up points there,” Lockhart said. “We are really working toward that.” One annual perk for Mitchell is how its schedule is laid out. The annual Mitchell Invitational is Oct. 9 at the Corn Palace, where Mitchell will host about 20 teams from both classes of competition, and that is followed by the ESD meet on Oct. 16 and the state meet is Oct. 23. It sets up the clear goal of peaking for the end of the season. “It all lines up for us at the end of the season,” Lockhart said. “We know our girls get excited to compete at home and then the goal is really carrying that through the end of the season, as well.”

competitive dance in South Dakota, including the elimination of kick as a competition category. That leaves three disciplines for teams to choose from and they can be scored on two at a meet: jazz, pom and hip hop. Teams are judged on their choreography, execution, and presentation in each division. Mitchell will participate in pom and hip hop, which has been their preferred setup for the last few years. VerHey said her team likes pom because there’s a continued element of school spirit, and hip-hop is a discipline that gets dancers with less experience more involved. She said the team’s goal is to be in the top-10 in the state by season’s end. The team has been practicing since early August, but is refining its routine in the final week before the season opener. “We’re excited about pom this year. Our choreography is great, probably the best it’s ever been for us,” VerHey said. “In hip hop, our style is really good, so I know we’re all excited to get going.” The team is led by its upperclassmen, with seven seniors on the roster for dance, led by Gracie Czmowski, Gracie Geppert, Heaven Hofer, Chloe Holzwarth, Becca Long, Maddie Pudwill and Natasha Rieger. The state meet for both competitions will be held Oct. 22-23 at Brandon Valley.

MHS boys golf team welcomes back host of returners By Ryan Deal Mitchell Republic They’ll be a host of familiar Kernels on the tee this season. The Mitchell High School boys golf team returns seven letterwinners and has 32 total golfers on this year’s roster. The Kernels are headlined by senior Macon Larson, who captured 12th at last year’s Class AA boys golf meet, and will contend for an individual state championship this year, said co-head coach Ryker Kreutzfeldt. “Macon has worked on his game non-stop all summer,” Kreutzfeldt said. “He’s gotten a lot better off the tee and he’s learning how to score now. He’s been playing really well and he’s continuing to get better. He hasn’t reached his max potential. So our job is going to be to figure out
how we can cut a couple strokes here and there for him. He’s going to be a really good player and tough to beat.” Larson and Ashton Reimnitz, another state qualifier, are the lone seniors on the team. Reimnitz tied for 68th place last season at state. There will be a handful of other players with varsity experience pushing for one of the top-six spots. Juniors Jackson Childs and Lincoln Bates and sophomore Noah Larson are state qualifiers. Childs tied for 53rd, Bates finished 64th and Larson tied for 70th. They’ll be contending for top spots, while seventh-grader Asher Dannenbring projects to be in the mix for a varsity spot. “I bet 10-to-11 kids are right there competing for that sixth spot,” Kreutzfeldt said. “So it’s

against some of the best players in the state. We’ve seen those players that have taken that time to play in those tournaments — at least a couple in the summer — they usually make a big leap that next year.” Mitchell will host its invitational on Sept. 17 at Lakeview Golf Course. The Eastern South Dakota tournament is Sept. 25 in Watertown. The Class AA state meet is Oct. 4-5 in Huron.

MHS softball looks to improve By Marcus Traxler Mitchell Republic The Mitchell High School fastpitch softball team is likely eager to turn the page to 2021. The 2020 Kernel campaign was a difficult one, in which MHS was 3-24 on the season and had its struggles on offense and defense. But Mitchell brings back almost all of its production on offense from a season ago, providing the possibility that the Kernels can put up enough runs to contend in 2021. At the plate, MHS likely will be led
by Kathleen Nash, a senior catcher, who returns after receiving all-Eastern South Dakota Conference and all-state honors last season. She hit .492 for the Kernels with two home runs and driving in 10 runs and scoring 10 times. Senior Keirstyn Krcil, a fellow all-ESD selection with an honorable mention all-state nod in 2020, hit .439 last season with a team-best 17 RBIs, while balancing pitching and playing in the infield. Kara McGee, who hit .415 in 22 games last season, and Ally Barlean, an allESD pick who had 12 RBIs and a .349 average in 2020, are among the other
top returners on offense for Mitchell. Ruby Uithoven, Kassidy Overweg, Brooklyn Jarding, Macey Linke and Ellie Kisor are back on the roster this season for Mitchell after seeing regular playing time in 2020. In the circle, Krcil will likely be asked to lead the Kernel pitching staff, given that top pitcher Jacey Linke from the 2020 season has graduated. Krcil threw 58 innings in 11 starts with 16 strikeouts to 45 walks and an earned-run average of 12.91. Linke and Krcil were the only two pitchers to log varsity innings for MHS in 2020, combining for a team ERA of 11.48. Macey Linke is also on the
roster for 2021 as a potential pitcher for MHS. The Kernels will be particularly busy in the first few weeks of the season, playing 16 games before Labor Day. The annual ESD tournament, in which Mitchell finished sixth last year, will be played Sept. 18. The state tournament is once again scheduled to be played at Sherman Park in Sioux Falls on Oct. 1 and 2. Harrisburg was the state champion in 2020, finishing with a record of 32-3 and a 12-2 victory over Sioux Falls Lincoln in the winner-take-all championship game.
Golden Eagles bring strong core to cross country course By Branden Hull Mitchell Republic The Mitchell Christian cross country team has made a challenge to its entire group to add some motivation to this upcoming season. Mitchell Christian finished fifth as a team last year in the Class B state cross country meet. Five runners competed in the race and two will no longer be on the team due to graduation. First year cross country coach Jill Nydam said the team as a whole has set a goal for the entire team to go to state this year. “Julie (Holdeman) and I are going to do everything we can to work with them and help them achieve that goal,” Nydam said. “They’ve got their own goals about setting personal records, but the team goal is that they really would like to get back to state. As a team, not as individual runners.” Nydam said she is more of a co-coach and will work alongside Julie Holdeman, who is also in her first year of coaching. “She’s amazing and I couldn’t do it without her,” Nydam said. “She is equally head coaching with me.” Nydam already had some rapport with the team before taking the coaching
job. She teaches at Mitchell Christian and her son Braeden was a part of the cross country team from seventh grade until he graduated in 2018. Nydam had a prior relationship with this team before coaching and always appreciated how patient this team is and the mindset the runners have for the sport. “This is such a great team,” Nydam said. “The parents are so supportive, the kids are going to give it their all and they’ve been real patient with Julie and I in our first year. They’ve been really helpful and it’s just a great environment. It’s been very positive and there’s a lot of humor amongst the team.” The group of runners that Nydam’s raves about features two seniors, one junior, two sophomores, one freshman, one eighth grader and three seventh graders. Hannah DeLine, MCS’ lone female racer and one eighth grader for Mitchell Christian’s cross country team, only raced in junior high races last season, but asked to run with junior varsity this season as an eighth grader. On the boys side, the Golden Eagles lost Nathanael Anderberg and Max Reynen, the two runners that finished

Team leader Nahum Anderberg will be returning, along with both seniors Micah Frey and Liam Pospisil who all raced at state last season. Aiden Lessman, a seventhgrader, will be the only new runner for the team.
To stay in shape and build chemistry heading into next season, Nydam had the team meeting and running a couple of times a week, but said it was not mandatory and that players will still have to do work on their own if they want to get to state.
Mitchell Christian volleyball focuses on building up team By Branden Hull Mitchell Republic The Mitchell Christian volleyball team is focusing on rebuilding its offense this season and gaining a rapport within the team. The Golden Eagles finished with a record of 5-12 last season and lost three key players to the offense, Erica Thompson, Maggie Reynen and Kaitlyn Tegethoff. “A lot of our main players graduated so we’re going to have some new faces coming in and it’s going to be a building year,” head coach Cara VanZee said. Despite Mitchell Christian losing its setter, outside hitter and middle blocker from last year’s team, transfers Kelsey Holdeman and Aspen Lessman join the team and VanZee believes they help the team defensively. “We retained two main players that we’re a big part of the defense and our transfers should help us out as well,” VanZee said. Seniors Keely O’Neill and Whisper Eben are the defensive anchors returning for the Golden Eagles, along with sophomore Lindy Hofer, who VanZee said improved last year and will have a bigger role this season. Hofer won’t start the season on the court with the team due to a knee injury, but VanZee said she might be available later in the year. O’Neill will be the setter for the Golden Eagles until Hofer returns. MCS is still focusing on sewing up their offensive strategy, as they worked on passing and hitting
all offseason and continuing to work on passing and chemistry with each other ahead of the season opener. “Getting our passing down, that’s a part of our building this year and that takes time to perfect,” VanZee said. “It takes time, we have to get better at anticipating the ball, where it’s going to be and how hard it’s going to come. It’s time that takes visual prowess to develop and then moving your feet to get there.” With Hofer being momentarily sidelined, O’Neill and Eben will play alongside four freshmen at the start of the season. “Last season, I had all experienced players except for one. This year they are all mostly inexperienced,” VanZee said. “It can be challenging sometimes, but

We don’t have any seniors this year, so our junior class will need to step up and be leaders for the team. Eli Vobr will be our starting quarterback as a freshman and he’ll need to learn to command his offense and lead them in the huddle. It will be a process, but I’m excited to watch them learn and see improvement week after week.

DWU fall sports preview By Mitchell Republic Below are brief previews of the Dakota Wesleyan University athletic teams that will be in action this fall:
Football

Dakota Wesleyan linebacker Samuel Kretschmar fights through a Dordt block during a 2020 college football game at Joe Quintal Field. Zamora, Schmidt and Kretschmar all got honorable mention nods from the GPAC at the end of last season. Kicker Tate Gale and Trevor Lambert return to the roster in 2021, with Gale accounting for 17 extra points and going 4-for-6 on field goals last year. The conference season starts with a Sept. 4 game at Mount Marty, which will be playing its inaugural game as a program and bringing the GPAC to an 11-team league and increasing the conference schedule to 10 games. After an off week, DWU heads to Midland for a Sept. 18 road game and the GPAC home opener is also DWU’s homecoming game

Looking to build off of a strong finish to the season, the Dakota Wesleyan University football team enters 2021 with some confidence. The Tigers were 4-5 last season in an exclusively Great Plains Athletic Conference schedule, but found three consecutive wins in the final four weeks of the season to end on a high note against Briar Cliff, Jamestown and Concordia (Neb.). Three quarterbacks were in competition for the starting job entering fall camp, with Mitchell native and junior Kiel Nelson carrying the most experience. The 6-foot-3 passer had started 11 games over the 2019 and 2020 seasons, including four last year. Jimmie Garewal, a 5-foot-11 senior from San Jose, Calif., and Austin Lee, a 6-foot-1 redshirt freshman from San Antonio, Texas, were also in the mix after taking game snaps last year. Jamin Arend, a Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan football product, is the leading returning rusher, posting 523 yards and three touchdowns a season ago. The Tigers graduated top receiver Spencer Neugebauer, who had 11 total touchdowns and more than 800 yards of total offense, but now look to receivers Daniel Libolt and Jakob Oxos to fill in those holes. Libolt, who also factored into the return game behind Neugebauer, had 19 catches and a touchdown in 2020, while Jakob Oxos had 10 catches last season. DWU’s defensive line saw a spark from Dominick Warmbein, who had 3 1/2 sacks in the late-season win over Jamestown. Warmbein, who was secondteam all-GPAC in 2020, is a graduate senior from Sioux Falls on the 2021 roster, one of five graduate players for the Tigers, and is the returning leader in sacks with 5 1/2. At the linebacker and secondary level, nearly every top defender from last season returns for 2021, including Huron product Sam Kretschmar, who led the team with 58 tackles in 2020. Nate Rupprecht (49 tackles), Adam DeJong (38 tackles), Max Schoenfelder and Hayden Schmidt (35 tackles each) are all back. Senior defensive back Jacob Zamora returns after a team-high three interceptions last season, one of nine Tigers to pick off a pass in 2020.

(All conference games are at 1 p.m.) Aside from an Oct. 9 home game against Doane, DWU will have three of its final four games of the season at Joe Quintal Field, hosting perennial NAIA tournament qualifiers Northwestern (Oct. 23) and Morningside (Nov. 13) sandwiched around a Nov. 6 visit from Jamestown to Mitchell. Northwestern was the 2020-21 season NAIA national runners-up, reaching the title game after a 44-41 win at No. 1 Morningside in the national semifinals. In the preseason coaches’ poll, the 10-time reigning champions Morningside got the nod as the conference favorite in the GPAC, with Northwestern second and Dordt picked third. Dakota Wesleyan was picked seventh, just behind Doane and ahead of Hastings, with those three in close proximity.
Volleyball After a third-straight winning season in 2020 and the fourth in the last five years, the Dakota Wesleyan volleyball team is on a mission to continue its upward momentum in the GPAC. DWU, which was 12-9 overall and 8-8 in league play, finished sixth in the conference in 2020-21. It was the Tigers’ first appearance in the GPAC tournament in school history, bowing out in a threeset sweep at the hands of Concordia (Neb.) But the momentum can be sourced to the young core of eighth-year coach Lindsay Wilber’s team, starting with Langford native Ady Dwight. Dwight received NAIA All-American honorable mention honors following a season that earned her the GPAC freshman of the year award. She had 244 kills (13th in the GPAC), hit .283 on the attack for the season and posted 84 total blocks. It’s the second straight season DWU had a national honoree following Becky Frick’s honorable mention nod in 2019. Four of the Tigers’ top five attackers from the end of the 2020 season return this fall, including Dwight, juniors Mariah Gloe (191 kills) and Mitchell product Mackenzie Miller (183 kills) and senior Jadie DeLange (152 kills). Setter Madeline Else returns, as does defensive specialist Hanna Reiff, of Chester, who paced the team with 358 digs in 2020. At the time of this publication, DWU was 5-0 in 2021, running the team’s streak of victories against non-GPAC opponents to 26, dating back to late in the 2018 season. The Tigers also find themselves on the fringe of the national top-25. DWU has never been ranked since the NAIA coaches’ poll’s current makeup started in 1999. Jamestown, the regular season and GPAC tournament champions a season ago, was the preseason coaches’ favorite ahead of the new season. Midland, the NAIA national runners up from the spring 2021 conclusion of the 2020 season, was picked No. 2, with both the Warriors and the Jimmies splitting the 12 first-place votes, and Jamestown having a four-point advantage overall. Dakota Wesleyan was picked seventh, just behind College of St. Mary in sixth.
Cross country With an interim head coach, the Dakota Wesleyan cross country teams will be tasked with showing improvement for the 2021 season. Chris Aschemann, who was previously associate head track and field coach for two seasons and improved DWU’s throwers in field events, was picked as the interim director of the school’s cross country and track and field teams. Former coach Jamen Helton, who had run the cross country and track programs for three seasons,

On the women’s roster, Delanie Larson, of Gettysburg, is the lone senior. She is flanked on the roster by Mitchell High School graduate and junior Annika Vermeulen, freshman Hallie Schmidt, a Plankinton native, and Pierre sophomore Morgan Oedekoven, along with Baylee Field, a junior from Fremont, Nebraska. All five competed in the GPAC meet last year but the Tigers did not retain their top women’s finisher from the 2020 GPAC championships in then-freshman Tessa Kilber, who was 47th. Oedekoven took 51st, as the Tigers were ninth overall. Kilber posted the fourth-best 5K time in school history in October 2020 at the Briar Cliff Invite. DWU’s men’s roster is a little larger, with eight runners. The Tigers bring back their top GPAC finisher from a year ago in Wyatt Baldauf, a junior from Seneca, Ill., who was 44th last season. Also back
is Vermillion native and junior Justin Sorensen, who was 48th overall at the GPAC meet, and sophomore Hunter Shanks, of Bennington, Neb., and senior Layne Lewis, of Plankinton, are also GPAC meet returners. The DWU cross country schedule won’t require too many miles in the first two months of the season. The campaign opens with the annual Augustana Twilight meet at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls on Sept. 3. DWU will participate in three straight meets in the Sioux City area, followed by the Mount Marty Invitational on Oct. 23 in Yankton. The GPAC Championship is scheduled for Nov. 6 at Landsmeer Golf Course in Orange City, Iowa. Only if the Tigers have a national qualifier will they leave the footprint of Iowa or South Dakota, with the NAIA National Championships in Vancouver, Washington on Nov. 19.

Soccer Dakota Wesleyan’s soccer teams made the GPAC postseason in 2020-21, but are lining up again to take on another season in 2021. For the Tiger women, coached by Clay Glasgow in his eighth year, the challenge will be replacing the production of Alyssa Weidler, who graduated from DWU last season with the school record for career goals, tallying 40 from 2016 to 2020, and was a firstteam all-GPAC pick. A season ago, the Tigers finished 7-5 in the GPAC, tied for fourth place on points in conference games, and were 9-8 overall. That was in a season that was fractured by the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing the NAIA postseason into spring 2021, with the Tigers going 0-2-1 in tune-up games prior to the GPAC tournament opener at Concordia (Neb.). Playing in its first GPAC tournament game since 2014, Alondra Partida, of Salinas, California, notched a goal for DWU, but the sixth-seeded Tigers fell to thirdseeded Concordia, 2-1, as the Bulldogs marched to the GPAC title. Partida is one of two major goalscorers back for DWU in 2021. Midfielder and Tea native Josephine Bardsley, one of nine South Dakotans on the roster, had seven goals and six assists last season and will be leaned upon once again. While DWU had the luxury of two senior goalkeepers last year, the Tigers are young this year in net. Sophomore Taylor Stermon, of Crosby, Texas, was on the roster last season but has not played, while Isabella Gregg and Hannah Turmbull are on the roster as well. In the preseason poll of GPAC women’s soccer coaches, DWU was picked to finish seventh in the 13-team league (Presentation competes in the GPAC for soccer.). Briar Cliff, the regular-season champion from 2020, was picked as the slight favorite in the conference, with Concordia and Jamestown close behind. DWU men’s soccer team will embark on the 2021 season with a new head coach, led by Brady Van Holland, who is the program’s seventh head coach since DWU began fielding men’s soccer in 2005. Van Holland is a Sioux Falls native who was an allGPAC player for Dordt in the early 2010s and was an assistant coach for four years at Covenant College in Georgia, an NCAA Division III program. DWU’s men’s program was 5-9-1 in 2020-21 and qualified for the GPAC tournament. But was hurt by a lack of offensive attacking ability, scoring 15 goals in 14 games, and won’t bring back much offense from last year’s team. Top scorer Ndrin Maloku had 11 goals last year, good for the top-40 in the nation and the first all-GPAC first-team member in nine
