With large group of returners, Kernel baseball prepares for spring season By Landon Dierks Mitchell Republic MITCHELL — As the Mitchell High School baseball team readies for its spring season, there’s plenty of reason for excitement and optimism. Entering the 2021 season, the Kernels were tasked with replacing a significant amount of production from 2020. This season, the exact opposite is true, as Mitchell boasts a large senior class with ample pitching and batting experience throughout the roster. As such, there’s reason to believe Mitchell can improve on its 16-13 campaign from 2021 that saw the Kernels finish ninth in the Class A standings prior to the postseason. For coach Luke Norden’s crew, success will likely start with what the Kernels can offer on the mound. “When you look at what we graduated from last year, I think we’re only short 20-something innings on the mound,” Norden said. “A lot of these guys have thrown a lot of innings for us, so that’s a huge difference from last year and going to be a huge key. And that’s not even to mention the experience and number of varsity at-bats guys have.” According to Norden, Mitchell’s rotation will be bolstered by the arms of Jonah Schmidt, Landon Waddell and Jake Helleloid. All three pitched at least 17 2/3 innings, includ-

Dylan Soulek, Jace Larson, Seth Muth, Peyton Schroder and Gavin Soukup are likely to see plenty of time on the mound, as well, as Norden works to get players acclimated to a variety of different roles and situations. With the exception of Soukup, each of those individuals pitched between 13 and

18 innings last spring as the Kernels posted a team earned-run average of 3.72. At the plate, the 2022 Mitchell team’s offensive approach is likely to look a little different. In previous years, Norden hasn’t been opposed to bunting and playing “small ball” early in games, but with the number of bats he has on this year’s roster, that could change. “I think this year may

be a bit of a reverse from what we’ve done before in having the opportunity to swing away more early in games and then go into add-on mode and do small-ball stuff later in games,” Norden explained. “I think we have the opportunity to score a lot of runs this year, so I’m maybe less apt to bunt at the beginning of games, hopefully shooting for big innings that we’re fully capable of having.”

Last season, the Kernels batted .296 as a team with an on-base percentage of .413, with Schmidt’s batting average of .402 and Seth Muth’s on-base percentage of .469 leading the way among those with more than 30 plate appearances. Schmidt also paced Mitchell in extra-base hits (14), runs batted in (28) and runs scored (30). It’s that type of returning production

that has Norden hoping to see a jump from his team in the standings this spring. “Since going to power points in the high school season, we’ve had good seasons, but we really haven’t had one really good season where we’re in that top tier of Class A,” Norden said. “I think being able to be in that top-four and be able to host the regional at our home park would be big for this team.”

and now head coach Deb Thill, the high jumpers made Mitchell one of two schools in South Dakota with three 6-foot jumpers at states in 2021; senior and current Dakota Wesleyan athlete Ryley Johansen placed fourth with a leap of 6 feet, 2 inches, while

junior Carter Moller and sophomore Lincoln Bates placing eighth and ninth respectively with 6-foot jumps. This season, Moller, a senior, and Bates, a junior, are looking to build on the technique they honed last year into even better finishes at the

end of the year. The two have already dominated the indoor events early in the season; Moller won high jump at the Dan Lennon Invitational and the indoor Eastern South Dakota Conference meet with 6-foot jumps, while Bates placed second at Dan Lennon and third at

the ESD indoor meet with leaps of 5 feet, 10 inches. “They work really hard, and both Carter and Lincoln have set some really high goals for themselves this year and are working really hard to get there,” Thill said.

Mitchell girls golf has confidence after successful 2021 campaign By Dylan Jespersen Mitchell Republic MITCHELL — The Mitchell High School girls golf program has a well deserved confidence surrounding the team this season as they come off of the best season in school history in 2021. After claiming the program’s first runner-up finish in the Class AA girls golf state tournament and hoisting its first Eastern South Dakota Conference trophy in 20 years in 2021, the team is looking forward to an exciting season with high expectations in 2022. “There are going to be some really high goals,” head coach Jeff Meyerink said. “And I really do believe they can attain those goals.” Last season can be looked at as the long-awaited payoff after years of growth together as a group of golfers. Led by Masy Mock, a senior who finished in fifth place in the state tournament, and freshman Quinn Dannenbring, who finished tied for 12th, the group

Meanwhile, sophomore Malachi Branch has also shown some promise, placing fourth at the ESD event with a jump of 5 feet, 8 inches. The trio of jumpers makes the Mitchell boys high-jumpers the group to beat heading into the spring. “Those three boys will hopefully place for us at every meet,” Thill said. “They are going to be among the very top of high jumpers.” Moller also leads the talented group of runners for a Kernel boys team that has been competitive in nearly all the events they have competed in to start 2022. Moller placed fourth in the 300-meter dash with a time of 36.92 seconds, a personal record, and combined with juniors Jagger Tyler and Bryce Palmer and sophomore Nathan McCormick for fifth in the 4x300-meter relay with a time of 2:34.54. The boys look to turn their individual improvements into higher team scores and better placements in 2022, with their focus on the state meet at the end of May. On the girls side, a mix of experienced distance runners with younger sprinters is looking to give Mitchell some more success this season. With junior runner Lizzie Tyler leading the way, the team is looking forward to being competitive at the state meet this season.

new leaders at the helm. “We graduated a couple seniors, which hurts any team. But there will just have to be some new leaders who step up and guide the team in a new direction this season,” Meyerink said. With the effort the girls have put in over the offseason, Meyerink thinks everyone on the roster has the chance to stand out this season. Many of the returning players are regulars on the SDGA youth summer tour, giving them plenty of time to work on their game over the summer.

“They are all working on their game over the winter. A lot of them are playing on the (SDGA) summer tour as well,” Meyerink said. “I think they have all put in the time.” Golf during the winter is not easy in South Dakota, but Meyerink said local Mitchell residents have allowed the girls to use their golf simulators to work on their game over the winter, and that has been very helpful. “It is good to know the community is behind them in that regard,”

“She will lead us individually and in relays,” Thill said. Tyler is the only returning runner on the girls side to finish in the top10 in events at last year’s Class AA meet, placing seventh in the 400-meter dash (1:00.04) while finishing in 13th in the 800-meter dash (2:26.85) as a sophomore. Tyler has already shown improvement in 2022, setting personal records in the 300 (44.09) and 800-meter dash (2:28.41) at the ESD meet on April 2. In the shorter distance events, juniors Brooke Bartscher, Claire Hegg and Emily Moody join freshmen Keyana Kelley, Ava Brannan and Lainee Forst to form a formidable group of sprinters for the outdoor season. Thill says the mix of talent should make their relays a tough group to compete with. “Our 4-x100-meter relay should be stellar this year because of the level of talent those girls bring in,” Thill said. Thill has been in the Mitchell program for years but just took over as head coach a few months ago. She says that the transition has been smooth, mainly thanks to the stellar coaching staff across the entire program. “I am very, very pleased with how we are all working together to do what is best for the kids,” Thill said. “We have over 100 kids out for track. That is quite a big number, and trying to figure out how to work together is quite a task, but we are going to keep going with it.”

said Meyerink. The team is returning five players from last year’s roster, four of which competed in the Class AA tournament last season. Dannenbring joins fellow sophomore Allison Meyerink, juniors Lara Widstrom and Jayli Roberts and eighth-grader Maddie Childs as the team’s returning players. Dannenbring and Meyerink shot a 162 and 168 respectively over the two rounds of the state tournament last year, both finishing in the top-20 of the tournament, while

Childs (174) and Widstrom (182) finished in the top-40. Perhaps the biggest change for the program was the exchange of coaching duties; after spending last season as the assistant coach to Mark Horan, Meyerink takes over as the head coach this year. Meyerink says the transition has been as smooth as possible, but he looks forward to getting the season started. “We have been working to make sure to get everything done ahead of time as much as we can, so that we can focus more on practice and improving our games,” Meyerink said. With the season slated to start on April 14 at the Harrisburg Invitational, the team still has a few weeks to go before the season officially starts. Still, even on the first day of practice, the optimism from the entire team was clear. “I know the girls are ready to go. They’re really happy to be out here,” Meyerink said.

Experience leads Mitchell boys tennis in final season in Class A division By Branden Hull Mitchell Republic MITCHELL – In its final season playing against Class A competition, the Mitchell High School boys tennis team has one of its more experienced groups at its disposal. The Kernels have six seniors on its roster heading into the 2021-22 season and is still in the process of sorting out its flight order to begin the season as senior Macon Larson is still dealing with a bruised bone in his knee that sidelined him for the final stretch of the Kernels basketball season. Mitchell head coach Pat Moller said he isn’t sure when Larson will be available, but he will be reevaluated in the weeks to come. “We have so many athletes on this team and it starts with Larson who’s a multi-sport athlete with golf and basketball,” Moller said. “He’s pretty successful at all those sports and he brings a lot of experience to us since he’s been playing varsity since he was a freshman. … Right now we just want to make sure he’s healthy and once he does, we’ll ease him back into the lineup.” For the past two weeks, Mitchell has begun practicing and playing chal-

lenge matches amongst themselves to determine the flight order with Larson missing in Flight 1 of singles and doubles. The challenge matches in their final practices before the season begins will also determine who will be playing in Flights 5-6. “In years past, I’ve always thought we have to create a lineup that’s best for this year and the future,” Moller said. “This year, that really isn’t fair if we’re doing that to these seniors so I’ve been focusing on what’s best for our team, just this year, and next year we’ll worry about next year. … Whoever goes out and performs these first couple weeks is going to earn a varsity spot and by the end of the year, if we’re playing all seniors, I like our odds.” Moller said his seniors bring a lot of maturity and confidence onto the court, and believes it’s an asset not too many teams will have at their disposal. With that being said, that puts one of the Mitchell tennis players in a peculiar situation. Luke Jerke, a freshman that was the only Kernels tennis player to win a title at the state tournament last year, as an eighth-grader, will be

To begin the season in singles play, Tyler Loecker will be at Flight 2, Aidan Patrick will be at Flight 3 and Jack Vermeulen will move up from Flight 5 to Flight 4. In Flights 5-6, Jerke, along with Connor Thelen and Josh Grosdidier, will be battling for

positioning in the final two flights. In doubles play, Flight 3 has yet to be determined, but Drake Jerke and Patrick will play at Flight 2 and Loecker is locked in at Flight 1 doubles, but still doesn’t know who his partner will be in the immediate future before Larson’s return. Moller said whatever

decision he ultimately ends up making will be best for the team this season and should give them a better shot at the state title, especially with the experience everyone gained last season as they finished fourth in the state tournament. “Last year we had a lot of players playing varsity for the first time and might not have

understood what tournament tennis is all about,” Moller said. “I think we gained a lot of experience and we’ll be more prepared this year. It seems that the tournament experience last year motivated them to get on the court over the summer and over the winter and be prepared. We’re in a better spot this year already.”

Young Mitchell Christian track and field team anxious for upcoming season By Branden Hull Mitchell Republic MITCHELL — With three seniors and two juniors on the Golden Eagles roster, the Mitchell Christian track and field team has a lot of young athletes, combined with a new coaching staff heading into this season. The roster consists of 15 high school athletes and 25 junior high athletes, being coached by Jodi Asbenson, who’s returning after a threeyear absence. In the coaching department, she is accompanied by assistant coaches Michaela Jones and Andrea Johnson, along with new throwing coach Ryan Chase. In the field, the Golden Eagles will have six athletes compete in shot put and discus after not having any athletes throw the last two seasons. In part because the school doesn’t have its own track facility with

space to fully practice field events, Mitchell Christian has gone years without a competitor in the high jump, which will change this year, too. Mitchell Christian has been practicing for three weeks leading up to its first meet of the season, focused on building everyone’s strength and core to increase their speed and stamina. “A lot of them are excited to be here, excited about competing in newer events and have brought a great attitude into each practice,” Chase said. “With high school and middle school kids, you never really know and it might vary upon the kid, but they’ve been willing to learn and have been excited about learning new things.” Out of the 40 athletes on this track and field team, only one high schooler, Aspen Lessman, has elected to compete in shot put and

meet last season, finishing 12th in the 400meter competition with a personal best time of 1:03.05. Coaching a young team that only has one athlete who’s made it to state, Asbenson said the distance runners will be the strength of the team for the foreseeable future. “Our distance kids will be a big strength of this group, just because they’re a very young group,” Asbenson said. With such a young, inexperienced group leading the Golden Eagles in nearly every competition, Asbenson said the goals this year are not to win a meet because they don’t have the numbers to match other teams. Chase followed up and said the goals of the Mitchell Christian track and field team is to have the kids compete against themselves and improve at each meet. “Building off of where everyone was at last year is our focus as a team,” Chase said. “We just want to make sure we keep moving forward and continuing to get one percent better every day. … We’re not expecting instant rewards, but with all these kids coming in with inexperience, hopefully as the season wanes, everyone continues to improve and be happy with their progression from where they started to where they finish.”

will add to our core of distance runners who are coming off of successful cross country seasons. The girls will be tough in distance events, and should also be able to contend in medley or mile relays by taking advantage of some versatile middle distance talent. So far, the teams are shaping up to be positive groups of hard workers. We are blessed with good senior leadership.

2022 Spring Sports Preview

Saturday, April 9, 2022

Area contenders line up as spring golf season gets underway Howard, Winner Area, Ethan, Platte-Geddes among teams with key returners back for team chase By Marcus Traxler Mitchell Republic MITCHELL — Weather permitting, the South Dakota high school spring golf season will get underway in early April, with competition involving all three girls classes and Class B boys. In Class B boys competition, Chester Area won the 2021 state championship, edging Platte-Geddes by two strokes. Class B individual champion Brody Boltjes, of Platte-Geddes, won the 2021 title by a stroke as a senior, meaning there will be a new state champion this year. Wessington Springs’ Blake Larson, who tied for fifth last season at the Class B state tournament, is among the area’s returning contenders, as is P-G’s Dawson Hoffman. The junior was tied for ninth last year at the state meet. Ethan could also be among the Class B contenders with senior Kaden Klumb and junior Kody Klumb back in 2022 after each finishing in the top-30 at the state meet, including Kaden Klumb in a tie for 13th place. In Class B girls competition, Miller seventh-grader Jayce Pugh provided a stunner in the 36-hole championship, winning by three strokes last season at Edgebrook Golf Course in Brookings. She finished ahead of Bison/Hettinger/Scranton’s Allison Kahler and Estelline/Hendricks’ Kaylee Johnson. Johnson, who has since graduated and is a member of the Dakota Wesleyan women’s golf team, helped the Redhawks to a Class B team state title, edging Bison/ Hettinger/Scranton by two strokes. Howard was fourth a year ago in the state team standings, powered by a top finish from Trinity Palmquist in 21st place and Mia Glanzer and Piper Thompson each finishing in the top-30. All three Tigers return this season with Glanzer as a senior, Palmquist and Thompson each as juniors. Burke’s Adisyn Indahl is also among the region’s top returning girls Class B golfers, winning the Region 4B championship at Lakeview Golf Course last season by five strokes over Andes Central/Dakota Christian’s Abigail Svatos. Indahl finished in fifth place at the state meet. Both golfers are back this year, with Indahl a junior and Svatos now in her sophomore year. Svatos was tied for seventh at the state meet. Winner Area, which was third in the Class A team scoring last season, brings back three of its top-four state finishers from 2021, including Rylee Root, who was an 11th-place finisher. Root, a junior who won the Region 3A championship in Pierre last season, is joined by eighth-grader Gracie Root (19th in 2021)

Mitchell’s Lakeview Golf Course will host a pair of region championships again this year, with the Region 4B boys and girls tournament on May 24 and the Region 3A girls tournament scheduled for May 26. DWU spring sports report By Mitchell Republic The Dakota Wesleyan University spring sports teams are already in action for the spring. Here’s a rundown of where things stand at the midway points of their seasons:

Baseball

Decent early spring weather has allowed the Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team to get a number of its scheduled home games in during the month of March. As of April 4, the Tigers had a record of 8-17 overall and 2-10 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. DWU was 3-5 at home and 4-4 on neutral fields but have lost eight of their first nine true road games. Two-way player Matt Bezdicek leads the team in both hitting and pitching categories, including hitting .368, five home runs and a team-best 20 RBIs. Council Bluffs, Iowa native Daulton Wilcoxen has knocked in 17 runs for the season and Dell Rapids native Carter Gullickson has a batting average of .323. Luke LeMay leads the team in stolen bases with eight. As a team, DWU has had struggles on the pitching mound, with a team earned-run average of 7.96 in the first 25 games of the season, with opponents hitting .328 against DWU pitching. Bezdicek, a graduate level player from Plymouth, Minnesota, leads the team in innings pitched with 29 innings and an ERA of 4.03 and a team-best 28 strikeouts. Rapid City product Dawson Penticoff has thrown 26 innings and has two wins on the mound, including a complete game, while Jacob Glovich has thrown 23 innings and Kyler Halverson has the best ERA on the team at 2.70 in 10 innings pitched. The Tigers — who have 21 South Dakotans on the roster — will close out their regular season in April, with a season-finale home series on April 29-30 against Jamestown. (Six of the Tigers’ final eight games will be played at home.) The GPAC championship will be held May 5-7 with eight teams playing a double-elimination tournament in two, four-team pods at the high seeds. The pod winners will advance to a nine-inning, winnertake-all GPAC championship game on May 10.

for the Tigers in the pitching circle, throwing 74 2/3 innings with a 4.41 ERA, logging five of the team’s pitching wins. Teammate Tava Boone has thrown 65 innings and has a team-best 31 strikeouts for DWU. Opponents are hitting .386 against Tiger pitching this year. The Tigers, who did not play a home game until April 2, finish the season with 10 straight home games with doubleheaders against Jamestown, Hastings, Doane (twice) and Briar Cliff. The top-eight teams in the regular-season standings advance to the double-elimination GPAC tournament, which is played in two, four-team pods starting May 4. The pod winners play in a best-ofthree championship series on May 7.

25-26 for the women at Norfolk Country Club in Norfolk, Neb., while the men’s championship will be held at The Bluffs Golf Course in Vermillion on April 22-23. With 36 holes of the conference championships completed in the fall, the DWU women stand in second place with a two-day score of 666 strokes, 54 strokes behind first-place Morningside but 14 strokes ahead of third-place Briar Cliff. Hinker is third in the individual scoring with a score of 152, two back of first place, while teammate Erin Moncur is in seventh place on the individual leaderboard for DWU.

Golf

The spring golf seasons are ramping up for the DWU men’s and women’s teams with coach Russell Pick in his inaugural season leading the program. The DWU men’s golf team opened the spring season on April 4-5 at the Prairie Dunes Collegiate at the prestigious course near Hutchinson, Kansas. The Tigers have meets in Sioux Falls and Orange City, Iowa before preparing for the GPAC championships late in the month. The team is led by seniors Cade Carpenter, a Mitchell High School graduate, and senior Bennett Lundy, of Aberdeen. Max Dailey, a freshman, is among the other former Kernels on the roster. Aberdeen Roncalli alum Micah Dohrer, a 2020 Class A state champion, is among the team’s freshmen this season. The women’s squad also boasts a number of veteran players with tons of experience for the Tigers, all with South Dakota ties. The group includes Howard native Jordan Glanzer, Dell Rapids’ Kaitlyn Greenhoff, Lennox’s Megan Hinker, Winner’s Ronae Klein, and Mitchell native Ashley Zimmer. The Tigers won by 22 strokes in its first meet of the spring in Winfield, Kansas, with Hinker taking home third-place honors as an individual. She also earned medalist honors in a 36-hole event at Rapid City’s Arrowhead Golf Club on April 4 with scores of 81 and 77, helping the Tigers to a fourth-place team finish. The GPAC golf championships conclude on April

The start of spring for the Dakota Wesleyan University softball team has been a difficult one, particularly as play turns to the GPAC. The Tigers are 9-21 as of April 5, with a GPAC record of 1-7 under second-year head coach Derek Lien. Alyssa Burke is the team’s leading hitter and has proved to be a menace on the base paths. In the first 30 games, Burke hit .387 for DWU and has a team-best 24 stolen bases, while only being caught stealing once. Teammates Adriana Thomason (.373) and Nora Nelson (.344) are also among DWU’s team leaders in hitting, with Nelson driving in 16 runs. In the first major post-lockout move, the Twins acquired their shortstop, one whom they had talked about with the Rangers in the pre-lockout era. It cost them their starting catcher, and opened the door for 24-year-old Ryan Jeffers to take on a greater share of playing time with the Twins.

AL Central preview capsules By Dylan Jespersen Mitchell Republic Below is a rundown of the Central Division teams in the American League, looking at the key additions and departures, plus an outlook for the 2022 season:

Chicago White Sox

2021 record: 93-69 (first in the AL Central) Manager: Tony La Russa 2022 Opening Day starter: Lucas Giolito Key additions: Josh Harrison (2B), Kendall Graveman (P), AJ Pollock (OF) Noteworthy losses: Carlos Rodon (SP), Craig Kimbrel (CP) What’s new: Carlos Rodon’s departure means the White Sox No. 2 prospect in 2020, Michael Kopech, will get his first chance as a full-time starter in the Majors. Over 44 games as a spot starter and reliever in 2021, Kopech had a 3.50 ERA and struck out 103 batters. Worth watching: With Kimbrel traded to the Dodgers and Garrett Crochet receiving season-ending Tommy John surgery, the White Sox may be in need of some extra relief pitching via trade or free agency if they look to make a deep run in October. The White Sox are still In comparison to the moves made in the rest of the division, particularly compared to the Twins.

Cleveland Guardians

2021 record: 80-82 (second in the AL Central) Manager: Terry Francona 2022 Opening Day starter: Shane Bieber. Key additions: Bryan Shaw (RP), Anthony Gose (RP), Luke Maile (C) Noteworthy losses: Roberto Perez (C) What’s new: The Guardians solidified their bullpen in the offseason, adding 10-year veteran Bryan Shaw along with Anthony Gose as stage setters for Emmanuel Clase. Gose may be the most intriguing player to watch in the league as the former outfielder turned relief pitcher has made waves in the minors with his 99 mph fastball.

Minnesota Twins shortstop Carlos Correa signals from the field prior to the game against the Boston Red Sox during spring training March 27 at CenturyLink Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Florida.

March 13

The Twins acquired starting pitcher Sonny Gray and minor-league pitcher Francis Peguero from the Reds for young pitcher Chase Petty, their 2021 firstround draft pick. The wheeling and dealing continued the next day when the front office addressed its biggest need — starting pitching — by acquiring the two-time all-star. Though they had to part with Petty, a hard-throwing 19-year-old, Gray fills a hole on a team looking to win now. “Sonny Gray’s been on the radar for a long time for a lot of teams, obviously, but we think this is a guy who really establishes an anchor in our rotation, a guy that young players can look up to and someone we think is really going to lead us,” Falvey said.

March 13

The Twins traded Josh Donaldson, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Ben Rortvedt to the Yankees for catcher Gary Sánchez and infielder Gio Urshela. Just a couple years earlier, Donaldson signed the largest free-agent contract in team history, a fouryear, $92 million deal. But the Twins got out of that massive contract, creating additional payroll flexibility when the Yankees took on the remainder of his salary, around $50 million over the next couple of years. In the process, the Twins also dealt away the shortstop they had just traded for, creating a hole at the position once again. In return, they got anoth-

Coach comments: After our third-place team finish at the state meet last year, we are hoping to excel as we only lost two seniors from last year’s squad. Our field events have a really good nucleus of veterans and the diamond in the rough athletes will help achieve our goals for this year. We are excited for the opportunity to get out and have fun this spring.

We have increased our numbers for this year’s team which will make us more competitive for the season. Great group of girls who look to build each other up.

Worth watching: The entire Guardians’ pitching staff is loaded with talent, but Emmanuel Clase will still stick out regardless. The 24-year-old racked up 24 saves in his first full season in the majors while earning a reputation as one of top flamethrowers in the league.

Detroit Tigers

Minnesota Twins

2021 record: 77-85 (third in the AL Central) 2022 Opening Day starter: Eduardo Rodriguez Key additions: Javier Báez (SS), Austin Meadows (OF), Tucker Barnhart (C), Noteworthy losses: Matthew Boyd (SP), Jose Urena (SP) What’s new: For the first time since 2013, the Tigers are planning to start someone other than Miguel Cabrera at first base. Spencer Torkelson, the top-pick in the 2020 MLB draft, will get his shot after hitting 30 HR and driving in 88 runs for three different minor league teams in 2021. Worth watching: Top prospect Riley Greene was slated to join Torkelson on the opening day roster, but a fractured foot in Spring Training forced Detroit to make a quick move to replace him. The Tigers worked quickly to acquire Austin Meadows, a 26-year-old who had 106 RBI in 2021.

Coach comments: Since we have no upperclassmen, I am looking to the sophomore girls for leadership through their experience to lead this young team. It is exciting to see our numbers increase. We can put together some relays and have girls in the throwing field events. I think we will be able to build some great things this season and into the future.

Tripp-Delmont/Armour

inke started his career in Kansas City, spending seven years as a Royal before putting together an impressive 18-year career with six different organizations. Worth watching: For the future, all eyes are on Bobby Witt Jr., who is the No. 1 prospect in baseball. He batted a combined .290 with 33 homers, 97 RBIs and 29 stolen bases at Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha last season. He will be the Royals’ Opening Day starter at third base. (He is the son of the former MLB pitcher who spent 16 years in the Big Leagues.)

Sonny Gray and Chris Archer, two-time allstars for the Reds and Rays respectively, should lead the new-look Twins rotation in 2022. Worth watching: The addition of Correa should take a big portion of the offensive load off of Byron Buxton, but can the 28-year-old stay healthy long enough to make a difference for the Twins in 2022?
