Kernel football embraces high expectations
Senior-heavy team heads into 2018 By Nick Sabato The Daily Republic The Mitchell High School football team enters the 2018 season aware of the high expectations surrounding the team, with eyes on a second state championship in a three-year span. The Kernels finished 7-4 a season ago, reaching the Class 11AA semifinals for the third year in a row. With Mitchell returning its top four rushers from last season, four of its top five tacklers and a third-year starter at quarterback in Kiel Nelson, the expectations are undoubtedly high and the team is set to embrace them. “Jokingly, I just ignore them. In reality it’s this group of kids, it’s this group of coaches that have set that expecta-
tion,” MHS head coach Kent VanOverschelLETTERWINNERS: MITCHELL FOOTBALL de said on the first day of practice. “With that expectation, we just have to embrace it. We have to understand that it’s a challenge that’s in front of us and it’s what we want as well. That’s what we’ve intended within this program — to be one of the top programs in the state.” A year after winning the state title, Mitchell dropped a home heartbreaker to Harrisburg in the semifinals, 20-7. Every year Mitchell High School girls head tennis coach Pat Moller says that his team’s goal is to improve on last season. That won’t be as easy this year. Mitchell is coming off an Eastern South Dakota conference title and a fourth-place finish at state last season. The Kernels are also in the process of replacing two key seniors from last year’s team in Sammy Pooley and Sarah Zimmerman. Pooley was Mitchell’s No. 1 singles player last year, while Zimmerman was its No. 5 player. The Kernels still have plenty of depth, though. Moller said he can envi-
sion as many as 12 girls making an impact at the varsity level this season, led by its No. 1 singles player, Avery Larson. Larson, a senior, won a conference title in singles play last year, while also being Pooley’s doubles partner. The rest of the singles positions are up for grabs. That’s why Moller describes the Kernels’ practices as the girls, “beating each other up on the tennis court all week.” Mitchell’s practices leading into the season were filled with challenger matches to determine singles positions. “There’s a lot of competition (this summer),” Moller said. “We had a lot of girls who put in (more

than 100 hours of practice) in the off-season.” Moller singled out Madison Bohlen’s improvement from last year, citing her work ethic which, “filtered down through the team.” Bohlen won a state title at No. 3 doubles last year but never cracked the varsity singles lineup. This year, she heads into the season as one of Mitchell’s top-three singles players. Allison Mastel, Olivia Huber, Atlanta Stahle and Amber Moller, the team’s only eighth-grader, are also expected to play critical roles on the team this season. “They’re grasping their opportunities that they have here during practice, and we’re just getting ready for a match,” Moller
said. “... We’re just fortunate to have that depth, and these girls push each other to make each other better every day.” With Larson leading the way on a team with plenty of youthful depth, Moller thinks Mitchell can be in the mix for another ESD conference title and high finish at state. “Our boys have been successful for the last 5-6 years here, and the girls were tired of hearing about the boys,” Moller said. “To get that monkey off their back and say ‘yeah, we belong here, too’ I think there’s some pride involved there. ... I think now that they’ve attained that level, they want to stay there. I know I certainly do.”

MHS girls soccer takes on team mentality By Jeremy Karll The Daily Republic It’s all about helping the squad for the Mitchell High School girls soccer team. Second-year head coach Bob Lemon’s lessons on team chemistry have rubbed off on his team, which went 4-8-1 last season. “We need the team to stick together this year,” said Seemela Novak, a junior defensive midfielder. “... We’ve focused a lot on team chemistry, getting to know each 001768491r1
other and hanging out to get to know each other and to understand what each person’s personal goals and strengths are.” Novak, an all-Eastern South Dakota Conference player in 2016, will try to replace some of the production lost from Morgan Kempf, Mitchell’s only all-conference player in 2017. Kempf is out for the season after she chipped a bone in her knee at the end of last year. “I think Seemela’s big challenge will be consistency from game-
to-game,” Lemon said. “We’ve seen it in practice — she’s committed to working hard. She has every potential to be not only an all-conference but an all-state (player) if she can play her game and allow herself to be challenged.” Novak is one of four returning upperclassmen on a team that mostly consists of sophomores and seventh graders. While that could mean a bright future for the Kernels, it could also mean offensive troubles this year.
“Our key is can we put the ball in the back of the net,” Lemon said. “I think we struggled at times being consistent finishing and giving ourselves opportunities. We break down in the last third and don’t get a really high-quality shot.” Novak, Marianna Novak and Sam Gerlach are players Lemon envisions stepping up offensively this season.

Mitchell scored just eight goals a season ago, but this team could be more potent offensively due to the quality of field vision and the quick release of junior striker Dillon Robinson. This particular Kernel team possesses a much higher soccer IQ than teams in the past, which is going to help with possession time and more quality shots on goal, coach Novak said. Some of that is also due to a strong
culture and love of soccer being built within the program. “Another part of that vision has to do more culturally, understanding where we, as a group, are going,” Novak said. “I think one the greatest challenges any coach has is building culture in their organization and I feel really strong about the culture these young men have exhibited and they do have a vision about self-improvement, they have a vision about competing and they have an understanding about how they love the beautiful game.”

Senior-heavy Kernels ready for season MHS volleyball team features 11 seniors By Ryan Deal The Daily Republic There are senior-laden teams. Then there’s the Mitchell High School volleyball team. The Kernels have a whopping 11 seniors, which is the most in head coach Deb Thill’s 29-year tenure with the team. “Obviously, we have a ton of experience back,” Thill said. “We return all of our starters and role players that we had a year ago and they are a year older and a year wiser. Experience is going to lead to a lot of our success.” The group includes Bridget Thill, Mandy Schmidt, Lesley Vandrongelen, Brooke Flemmer, Mackenzie Miller, Cassie Hohrman, Chelsea Brewster, Carly Haring,
Maggie Kattner, Payton Morgan and Sage Jorgensen. Thill has coached the group since fifth grade club volleyball and it features dynamic players at all positions. “We’ve got a very, very multi-talented group,” Thill said. “Because they learned every position when they were young and so they worked hard and it shows now that they are older.” It’s led to wins on the court, as well. The Kernels are coming off a 21-6 campaign and a seventh-place finish at the Class AA state tournament. Despite making its first trip to state since 2012, seventh place wasn’t what Mitchell had in mind. “I think that’s fueled them a little bit,” Thill said. “Obviously, we know
that we are going to be a good team, but there are teams out there like Rapid City Stevens and Sioux Falls Washington and Watertown, who bring back everybody from a year ago as well. It’s going to come down to who does the little things right. Who passes the best and who serves the hardest, is what it is going to come down to.” The Kernels once again hang their hat on offense this year. Mitchell returns its top three hitters in Miller, Haring and Brewster. Miller was firstteam all-state for the second straight season, while Brewster landed on the second team. “The strength of this team is our offense,” Thill said. “We’ve got some power hitters. We’ve got a great setter. We’ve got
kids that can pass the ball to our setter so that we can run a lot of different plays, a lot of different options for our hitters. That will be our strength.” Miller suffered a knee injury during basketball season and her status to start the season is to be determined. She had surgery on March 27 and Thill didn’t want to speculate when she might return. “We are hoping to get her back as soon as possible,” Thill said. Orchestrating the offense is Schmidt, who is already the school’s all-time leading setter with 2,105 assists and her coach expects more of the same. “She’s an extremely talented setter,” Thill said. “She’s improved tre-

Veteran Kernels set for season By Ryan Deal The Daily Republic The Mitchell High School boys golf team won’t be lacking for experience this season. The Kernels return five players from last year’s team that placed 15th at the Class AA state tournament. The five are all seniors or juniors and coach Mark Horan expects the veteran lineup to produce this season. “We are getting some good leadership out of these guys and a lot of
them played in the SDGA Junior tour this summer,” Horan said. “We are thinking we are going to be improved this year.” Senior Ethan Huber was the top finisher for the Kernels last year, tying for 35th at state. Junior Max Dailey tied for 68th place. Senior Nick Bennett, junior Max Tupper and junior Kade Clark also competed at state for the Kernels last season. When the Kernels’ opened team practices, Horan noticed the sum-
mer spent playing on the SDGA tour has paid dividends. “Max Dailey and Ethan Huber look really good and actually Kade Clark has had a real good first three days of practice,” said Horan, who has 15 total golfers on varsity and expects close to 30 when the middle schoolers get on board. Where do the Kernels need to improve the most? “A lot of little areas,” Horan said. “But some course management skills,

some short game chipping, putting skills we need to get a little better. Getting the ball in play off the tee, some guys have a little trouble doing that once in a while. So we are working on all the different facets.” In the Eastern South Dakota Conference, Horan expects Yankton, Pierre and Aberdeen Central to be the favorites. He anticipates Sioux Falls O’Gorman and Rapid City Stevens to be the statewide favorites.

Four seniors to lead young MHS cross-country teams By Ryan Deal The Daily Republic New Mitchell cross-country coach Katie Buschbach has an eye on the future, while also focusing on the present. Four seniors and a host of underclassmen makeup the Kernel boys and girls cross-country rosters this season. While Buschbach is excited for what lies ahead with the Kernels, this year’s seniors are expected to contribute heavily to the 2018 success. On the girls side, Tayler Factor, TyAnn Hart and Annika Vermeulen will pace the Kernels. Hart placed 71st at state last season. “Those three girls are going to be a really tight

Factor didn’t compete in cross-country last season for the Kernels, but Buschbach better scoring chances, as well. Along with a new formation, the Kernels will have a new home as they’ll move to Joe Quintal Field this season. “It’s going to be different playing on the turf, we know that,” Lemon said. “It’ll prob-

MHS softball brings youthful roster into 2018 By Jeremy Karll The Daily Republic The Mitchell High School softball team is experiencing a youth movement this season, as eight of its 15-member roster are freshmen. However, head coach Jim Misiaszek thinks his team’s youth could help coming off a 1-23 season. “As far as putting (last season) behind, the freshmen don’t know any different,” Misiaszek said. “That’s the neat thing, the freshmen are coming in with a clean slate. It’s up to my seniors to lead and teach the younger girls how to win.” Misiaszek said his five seniors have immediately embraced their leadership role.
Despite only one win last season, Mitchell’s seniors are talented. Pitcher Tori Misiaszek, who is Jim’s daughter, and shortstop Hannah Sibson were named first team all-state in 2017, and outfielder Jordyn Cranny was named to the second team. Third basemen Haley Linke and outfielder Rahni Vaughn, who played sparingly last season, are Mitchell’s other two seniors. Both are expected to see significant playing time this season. girls “(Younger) are following, and the (seniors) are leading by example,” coach Misiaszek said. “The best players should be the hardest workers, and so far they have
been. I’m really excited about those returners to calm down a very young team.” Tori Misiaszek is slated to be Mitchell’s ace again and expected to pitch in at least one game of every doubleheader this season. That said, the Kernels also have the option of turning to a stable of younger players to put in the circle, including freshmen pitchers Keirstyn Krcil, Jacey Linke and Kate Nash. “A lot of those freshmen are going to get a lot of playing time this year, so I like their energy and their enthusiasm,” coach Misiaszek said. “They’re a hard-working group and talented, but they’re
son, which finished fifth at state last season. “We’ve got a young team this year,” Mitchell Christian head coach Cara Van Zee said. “We’ve got one senior and two juniors, but they’ve improved a lot and have been working hard.” The Golden Eagles only won six sets during the entire 2017 season, and one of the goals for the young team to become more proficient on offense as the underclassmen continue to learn. Van Zee is going to focus on the fundamen-
tals this year. She wants her players to build a foundation to work on through repetition. “It always goes to basics,” Van Zee said. “Continually having them run the same thing and having them get it in their head and putting it into practice and play. Getting them to get better with their eyesight and peripheral vision.” Sarah Morris is the lone senior on the squad and she is projected to be the libero for Mitchell Christian. Meanwhile, a pair of sophomores have
going to have to mature pretty quickly.” For a young Mitchell team to stay competitive against more experienced teams, Jim Misiaszek said the Kernels’ focus heading into the season is playing faster. Some of Mitchell’s freshmen played on younger summer teams this year, so they could be unfamiliar with the pace of play at the varsity level. coach However, Misiaszek has been pleased with the progression thus far, saying his younger players are “energetic and learning.” “For these girls, the expectations that they have is to go out and compete every night and to get Mitchell softball

are looking forward to a great season. This is the biggest team I have had since becoming the head coach in terms of weight. We also have quite a few position battles for the start of practice. This can give us a competitive edge since no player will be complacent. We do have a very difficult schedule playing many kids with D-I talent sets. We expect to be competitive throughout the season and turn some heads this year.

Coach’s comments: We are really excited to get this season started as we ended with a great season last year going to the state tournament. We hold high expectations again this season as we return many key players. The girls put some great offseason time in and are ready to get things rolling. We return a great offensive attack again this year and will continue improving our defensive strategies. We lost five seniors but have some great athletes that will be stepping up and filling those roles. Our ultimate goal again this season is to return to the state tournament as we feel we will have a great run at it.

I expect us to take our experience from last year and apply it to this season to carry us into the postseason.

The young Trojans placed third in their season-opening meet at the West Central Invite, while they finished in ninth place at the Dell Rapids Invite. “The boys played all summer,” Hockett said. “They practiced and played all summer. We are a very young team with a very, very bright future.” Quinn Bormann opened the season with a fourthplace finish at the West Central Invite with an 81.
He shot a tourney-low 36 on the back nine. “Our No. 1, Quinn Bormann is also capable of shooting some low numbers as a freshman,” Hockett said. Also in Region 3A, sophomore Cameron Caldwell returns after placing 23rd at the state meet a season ago. At the Dell Rapids Invite, which was loaded with top-notch Class A teams, Caldwell carded a 75 and tied for second. “He will be the one to beat from Chamberlain,” Hockett said about Caldwell.
The Region 3A meet is at Mitchell’s Lakeview Golf Course, which is where the Trojans will play at twice prior to the region tournament. (In South Dakota, boys in Classes A and AA play golf in the fall, while Class B golfers and girls in Classes A and AA play golf in the spring.) “That’s very important too that we kind of get to finish out and get into the postseason at Lakeview, which we try to play at least once or twice a week,” Hockett said. “That’s very important with the familiarity
and this year with regions being there, we are looking for a good couple rounds to finish that September out and October is in Dell Rapids.” The Class A state tournament is Oct. 1-2 in Dell Rapids. In Class A, Hockett said Tea Area, Dakota Valley and Lennox will be among the top teams in the state. The defending individual state champion Lucas Schaefbauer, of Aberdeen Roncalli, returns this season, as well, as the Cavaliers are the defending state champions. 001768940r1

DWU football welcomes changes in 2018 By Jeremy Karll The Daily Republic The Dakota Wesleyan University Tigers look different this season. The Tigers replace their record-breaking quarterback and last season’s leading receiver in Dillon Turner and Hayden Adams, respectively, and brought in four new assistant coaches. Yet head coach Ross Cimpl preaches the team’s experience as why the Tigers have a chance to improve on its 6-5 record from a year ago. Cimpl admits that replacing a tandem like Turner and Adams is nearly impossible because, “guys of that caliber don’t
come through your program every year.” But the players he has at those positions have him excited about the upcoming season. Shaye Slaughter is DWU’s starting quarterback this season. The redshirt junior was the Tigers only quarterback with game experience heading into the season, having completed 11 of 15 (73.3 percent) passes for 91 yards and an interception during his first two seasons. That said, Slaughter isn’t as mobile as Turner, therefore Cimpl and new offensive coordinator Loren Endsley plan on using more run-pass options (RPOs) in 2018 to
keep a “dynamic aspect” to their offense. “(RPOs are) tough to defend,” Cimpl said. “The guy pulling the trigger at the quarterback spot needs to make good decisions. He’s got to make the right reads and know where guys are going to be. And we got to expect our guys to be there.” Slaughter will look to sophomore Spencer Neugebauer (29 receptions, 381 yards in 2017), and redshirt-junior Jace Pulse (24 receptions, 325 yards) on the outside. Cimpl said Johnny Withrow, who converted from running back, and tight end Kyreice Miller have also had good off-seasons. The potential is there,
Cimpl said, but now it’s just a matter of someone stepping up. The Tigers return a familiar face at running back, however. Luke Loudenburg is slated to start again, looking to improve on a 2017 season which saw him rush for 993 yards and 11 touchdowns. Cimpl noted him making better reads and working on technique over the summer. For the Tigers to make strides, it comes down to their defense dramatically improving, though. Last season, DWU ranked 85th out of 88 in total defense. “For us defensively, the biggest thing is just guys maturing,” Cimpl said. “We’re expecting those
guys to … operate at a high level and to understand our scheme and execute our scheme and their assignments really well. It’s not just do your job, but do your job really well.” That starts with DWU’s linebacker corps. Cimpl said there will be a lot of pressure on them to perform against the run and pass, as well as making the right alignments. The group features DWU’s leading tackler in 2017, Tyler Wagner (72 tackles), along with Eathen Gaulke (68 tackles) and Dillon Rork (eight sacks). In the secondary, DWU returns three of its four starting defensive backs from a year ago, though
Tiger volleyball hopes experience translates to success By Nick Sabato The Daily Republic
The Dakota Wesleyan University women’s volleyball team has shown growth in head coach Lindsey Wilber’s fouryear tenure, though took a slight step back last fall. After recording the school’s first winning season in nearly 25 years in 2016, the Tigers went 16-18 overall and 3-12 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference last season. However, all six starters for DWU were either freshmen or sophomores, competing in the toughest conference in the NAIA. While contending for a GPAC championship is likely a tough ask for a team — with no seniors on the varsity roster — projected to finish 11th in the conference in the preseason polls, Wilber believes her team will continue to improve. “This year we should have a few more wins,” Wilber said. “We have a good returning (core). All of my starters are back from last year and I look for that to be good, having experience on the court as we get going.” The group of returning starters is headlined
by junior outside hitter Rebecca Frick, who had a breakout sophomore campaign in 2017, earning second-team All-GPAC honors. Frick was No. 12 in the nation with 462 kills and placed second on the team with 470 digs. Frick should once again be the featured player, with the Tigers looking to set her up frequently on the outside for kills and it’s going to be rare to see her come out of games, according to Wilber. “She’s gonna be our go-to, our terminator,” Wilber said. “She’s a good leader, she works really hard. I always say Becky’s good at everything she does. She’s our main contributor.” Sara Herman, who was a defensive stalwart at libero, stood out as a freshman last year. Herman was an all-GPAC honorable mention pick after ranking No. 35 in the country in digs with 610, which cracked the top 20 all-time in school history after just one season. Classmate Bridgett Knobbe was also a starter in her first season and also earned honorable mention all-conference after dishing out 1,066 assists,

Dakota Wesleyan University’s Bridgett Knobbe (2) and Kimberly VanBockern (16) protects the net against Presentation College’s Olivia Stet on Oct. 10, 2017 at the Christen Family Athletic Center. which puts her in the top 10 all-time with three seasons of eligibility remaining. Mallory Cooper, Kimberly VanBockern, Sydney Fritz, Emily Brunsing and Chelsey Heeg all return as well after playing in all 34 matches. With seven teams in the
GPAC ranked in the top 25 preseason poll, conference play is a grind, but the goal this season for DWU is to make the playoffs. That would require an eighth-place finish, which the Tigers did last season but lost out on the playoffs due to a tiebreaker sce-
nario with Concordia. “The competition’s so crazy,” Wilber said. “My goal is to make the playoffs, that was our goal last year. Just keep winning, hovering around the .500 mark. That’s good with the conference we’re in.”
experience alone won’t be enough to turn around a group which finished last in passing defense last season. Bailey Schriever, Tyrel Haley, Brandon Slama, Mitch Johnson and Trey DeCroock all have starting experience, but they intercepted just two passes last season. Haley led the group with 60 tackles. “A lot of older guys, upperclassmen that understand the scheme and understand how we have to do things,” Cimpl said of his defensive backs. “So I feel confident with those guys on the field.”
KERNEL FB From Page 2
Three players ran for at least 500 yards last season, with Drew Kitchens leading the way with 907 yards and 11 touchdowns on 207 carries, while Nelson ran for 676 yards and Carson Max had 506, with each finding the end zone six times. The key this season is to see whether they continue with a balanced approach each game or if VanOverschelde goes with the hot hand. “We have to have that unselfish attitude and we have to have that trust that, depending on the situation, we’re going to put the right guys in the right situation to be successful,” VanOverschelde said. “We have some versatility, especially in our run game. It’s a long season so we don’t have to overwork one individual.” The defense will be anchored by seniors Dylan Krogman, Levi Winne and Carter Max. Seniors Carson Max, Kitchens, Jared Street and Logan Sparks make up the linebacking corps, while senior Jackson Sadler and juniors Austin Kerr and Peyton Nash round out the secondary. In Mitchell’s season opener against Watertown, all 11 offensive starters were seniors, while eight of the 11 starters on defense were seniors. Trevor Lambert returns to do the placekicking, while Nelson and Carson Max will split punting duties.
