No cutting corners Kernels focus on little things heading into season By Jeremy Karll The Daily Republic Joe Shepardson is stressing the little things in practice. For the Mitchell High School track and field team, that means not cutting corners in practices, core workouts or while lifting. If the Kernels do the little things, then the fourth-year coach believes the results will follow. “We’ve been stressing that we need to keep working hard every day,” Shepardson said. “As we go throughout the year, if we keep working hard, we’ll see the results we want to see and get better every meet.” The Kernels started the season at the
DWU Invite on March 19, which Shepardson called a “glorified practice,” since his team only had two weeks of indoor practice to prepare. “We did really well,” Shepardson said. “We competed very hard. Kids who had very minimal practice in their events did fantastic. It was a great day. We were very happy, very pleased.” Despite not having a lot of time to prepare, Carly Haring had a record-breaking start to her high-jump season. The threetime state champion broke the DWU Invite record, clearing 5 feet, 6 inches. Haring has signed to compete at the University of South Dakota next season. “Carly is one of the hardest-working kids I’ve ever coached,” Shepardson
said. “The success she achieves doesn’t just happen by accident. She makes things happen because she sets goals and achieves those goals by working her tail off.” Haring isn’t the only Kernel set to compete in college, though. McKenzie Norton (Northwestern College) and Cassie Hohrman (Mount Marty) will both run sprints in college, while Annika Vermeulen (Dakota Wesleyan University) is a distance runner. “We need leaders like that,” Shepardson said. “Everybody follows the leader and those girls set a very good example for everyone. Their legacy will be left on the kids coming back next year.” The Kernels will also look toward
sprinters Caitlyn Ostbye and Hannah Sibson. Their distance aces are TyAnn Hart, Bridget Thill and Mandy Schmidt. On the boys side, the Kernels have sprinters Ryley Johansen, Parker Phillips, Logan Cunningham and Payton Olson, as well as hurdler Isaac Kitchens. They should be competitive in field events, too, with Jared Street (throws), Tristen Hildebrandt (long jump) and a pair of experienced pole vaulters in Sutton Carpenter and Sam Jones. “We like having kids come back that are experienced with what we’re doing,” Shepardson said. “And understand the commitment of working hard.”

Senior depth leads Kernel baseball into season
Mitchell sports experience up-and-down the lineup By Jeremy Karll The Daily Republic Mitchell doesn’t plan on over-relying on one aspect of its game. The Kernel baseball team returns plenty of seniors to its roster this season, leading to strengths up and down the lineup and players knowing their roles. “You look at guys who have had a role for a number of years and just continued to stay in that role,” Mitchell coach Luke Norden said. “We haven’t expected more out of them or changed their role so they get accustomed to it.” The Kernels are coming off a 9-13 spring season, but went 30-26 in Legion play over the summer as they made their second straight Class A Legion title game appearance. While the Kernels have put a focus on their mentality and approach to the game, they’ve also been fortunate with practices. They practiced inside at Dakota Wesleyan University during DWU’s spring break, and have
been able to practice outside more than last year, too. well-balanced throughout the lineup. “Last year we were outside for three days and played “We have a lot of different guys who can hit in a lot two games, then we were back inside for two weeks,” of different spots in the lineup,” he said. “… You only Norden said. “As rough as it’s been, the field looks great and it’s dry enough now. MITCHELL GIRLS GOLF RETURNING LETTER WINNERS
001768360r1
The Mitchell High School girls golf team enters its 2019 campaign looking to build on back-to-back top-10 finishes at the Class AA state meet, just three years removed from placing last in 2016. The Kernels return three players from last season’s team, but the rest of the squad has a bit of a different feel. They have one senior and a pair of sophomores, but the remainder of the team is comprised of freshman, eighth and seventh-graders. Still, if Mitchell can find consistent players in the fourth and fifth position, the belief within the program is that finishing as one of the 10 best teams in the state is a realistic goal once again. “We’ve always kind of been a young team for the most par,” MHS head coach Keri Munsen said. “With other teams, it always seems like they have a little more experience and we really have to work hard at it. I expect some of these younger girls to step up and put in the scores I know they can shoot.” Mitchell saw six players finishing in the top 60 at the state meet, led by Masy Mock, who capped off her freshman season by placing 17th overall with a 29-over-par 173. With another season under her belt, Mock believes that experience can help her move into the top 10 on the leader-
board at the state meet. “I’m more confident going to the courses because I’ve played at them,” Mock said. “I know which holes are the hard ones and how you have to play them.” Mock is one of two players returning from last season’s state team, along with senior Kailee Henglefelt, who finished 53rd. Ella Flippin -- another sophomore -- was among the top players on the squad last year, but missed the state meet due to a conflict. With the three returning players, Mitchell must find a few more to fill out the lineup, which Munsen will determine during the first couple weeks of practice and will likely be tweaked throughout the season. Among those in contention are freshman Olivia Huber and seventh-graders Allison Meyerink and Quinn Dannenbring. With so many young players, the Kernels want to spend as much time as possible on the course, so the coaches can help teach the intricacies of the game. “Playing the course is so important,” Munsen said. “A lot of these younger girls haven’t played courses around the state yet. … It’s very important that they can play the course so they can be used to certain situations and adapt to different holes and knowing their clubs.” Mitchell is scheduled to open its season on April 11 at the Harrisburg Invitational at Spring Creek Country Club.

Same set of goals Expectations remain high for MHS boys tennis By Ryan Deal The Daily Republic New set of faces, same expectations. The Mitchell High School boys tennis team graduated six seniors from last season’s team, which captured its fifth straight Eastern South Dakota Conference crown. The Kernels also claimed fourth place at the state tournament. Despite the losses due to graduation, MHS coach Pat Moller said the expectations remain high for the Kernels. “We are kind of starting all over,” Moller said. “But at the same time, we have been building our depth for a long time and we’ve got the depth where I think we are still going to be competitive. It’s just whether or not we can get these guys to play doubles at the level that they need to in order to be successful or not. That’s going to be the real question mark and that’s what we are going to work toward.” It’s also created some healthy competition during the first stages of practice. “The challenge matches have been fast and furious,” Moller said. “There’s been a lot of heartbreak and a lot of disappointment and a lot of excitement with that, but ultimately we find out who the best competitors are and the kids that have put in the most time, that work ethic is showing and it’s paying for them and it’s kind of nice to see that.”
Junior Kade Clark has paid his dues with the Kernels and appears next in line to hold down the No. 1 singles spot. Clark was the No. 6 singles player as a freshman, while he was the No. 5 singles player last season. “He’s definitely going to be our leader and he’s going to play No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for us,” Moller said. “He’s been preparing for this one spot for the entire offseason. He looks pretty strong and I think he’s got the opportunity to surprise some people.” Junior Ryan Bergeson will man the No. 2 singles spot and will team up with Clark at No. 1 doubles. Junior Max Tupper will likely slot in at the No. 3 singles position and will be on the No. 2 doubles, but his partner is to be determined. “Those three are kind of at the top of our lineup and then after them, we are still trying to figure things out,” Moller said. Moller said senior Jace Grosdider, junior Kade Jerke, sophomore Ben Helleloid and freshmen Macon Larson and Tyler Loecker are all also in the mix for spots, but he’s still ironing out positions. “It’s the nice thing about the depth that we have, is we can go out and they can push each other and in some cases, these are going to be some of the most competitive matches they have all year,” Moller said. 001768357r1

AREA TRACK AND FIELD PREVIEW: Mitchell-area teams filled with past state champs Chamberlain’s Byers gunning for strong finish to prep career By Ryan Deal The Daily Republic Familiar faces return to the track and field scene this season. As the track and field season approaches, the Mitchell-area teams are loaded with past state champs and school record holders. In Class A, the Chamberlain girls welcome back a trio of athletes all expected to land major points for the Cubs. Distance ace Ella Byers is coming off a Class A cross-country state title in the fall and looks to cap her prep career strong, before heading off to run at the University of South Dakota. “She went through most of the cross-country season competing very little and she still did an amazing job at state of course and she’s had some pretty amazing hurdles to get over in the last couple of years in terms of blood clots, to stress fractures and all of that,” Chamberlain coach Renee Long said. “So we are going to be cautious with her in the early season and we don’t want to work her too hard.” Avany Long and Mady Handel are also back after strong junior campaigns. Long took third in the long jump and sixth in the 300-meter hurdles at state. Handel will anchor the throwing events for the Chamberlain girls. Both are school record holders for the Cubs. “We are really excited how the girls team is shaping up,” Long said. “We are hoping that we can have another good season and we’ve been over the last two years winning at regions of an average of about 65 points a year. So we are hoping to do that again.” Also in Class A girls, Winner’s Sidda Schuyler took fourth in 3,200-meter run and eighth in the 1,600meter runs last season at state. Mount Vernon/Plankinton’s Savannah Risseeuw won last year’s Class A state title in the 100-meter hurdles, while she also took fifth in the 300-meter hurdles. McCook Central/Montrose’s Jacy Pulse returns after capturing the 300-meter hurdles at state. MVP’s Katlyn Briggs is coming off a fourth-place finish in the Class A discus last season. In the Class A boys, Chamberlain junior Nash Hutmacher will man the throwing events for the Cubs. The all-state football player and three-time Class A heavyweight wrestling champ will look to add some throwing titles to his résumé this spring after being unable to throw at state last season. “He got hurt right before the state track meet last year and so it is always nice to have Nash competing,” Long said. “He’s such a good leader with the young ones, too.” Drayton Priebe recently won the long jump at the Dakota Wesleyan University indoor meet and Long sees the potential from the sophomore. “He’s just kind of growing into his long legs and big feet,” Long said. “He’s got amazing jumping ability Ryan Deal / Republic

AREA GOLF PREVIEW: Burke plans to stay on top Cougars set sights on repeating as Class B champs By Nick Sabato The Daily Republic After four years of finishing second, Burke finally ascended to the top of the Class B girls golf world last June. The Cougars captured the state championship last season, besting Deubrook Area by 19 strokes. They also boasted the individual state champion, Tressa Bull, who nipped teammate Taylee Indahl by one stroke. Bull has since graduated, but Indahl returns, as do Emily Stukel and eighth-grader Adisyn Indahl -who placed 16th and 18th at state, respectively -- to give Burke reason to believe it can once again contend for a state championship this spring at Mitchell’s Lakeview Golf Course. “We have a really good core coming back,” Burke head coach Billie Jo Indahl said. “I feel like it’s going to be a good run again for us. They have that goal again this year to repeat.” With a runner-up finish last season, Indahl enters her junior year as one of the favorites once again. She
will have some competition with 2017 state champion Courtni Frank, of Deubrook Area, along with Bon Homme’s Makayla Kelly, who placed fourth last season. Fifth-place finisher Josie Rush (Philip) is also back, leading to the potential of an action-packed race to the top of the podium. “(Taylee) wants to be a state champion,” Indahl said. “It’ll be a lot of fun to see where she goes and how she does throughout the season. I foresee her to be a favorite and has a great chance of winning it this year.” Just three strokes behind Deubrook Area at the state tournament was Howard, but the Tigers could be competitive once again, but they are also facing a bit of a rebuild after losing three golfers that placed in the top 11 last season. Kenedy Koepsell returns after finishing 23rd last season, but she is still recovering from a knee injury during the basketball season and her status is up in the air. Sophomore Katelyn Feldhaus and freshman Mia Glanzer could be in line for breakout seasons after sitting behind the now-departed seniors last season.
“It’s going to be a younger team, but there’s some talent there,” Howard head coach Alan Wiese said. “... They got caught behind some really talented upperclassmen. You have to wait your turn and get a little better, get a little older and get a little more experience. Their time is now, so hopefully they’ll come through.” Mount Vernon/Plankinton’s Reagan Klooz returns after placing 23rd at the state tournament last season, while Platte-Geddes’ Mariah Van Zee looks to build upon a 26th-place finish. Bridgewater-Emery senior Darby Hurd is also coming off a 35th-place season at state, where the Huskies took 12th as a team. In Class A, Parkston finished four strokes behind Sioux Falls Christian for third at the state tournament, but top player Jayden Bormann graduated. Ellie Weidenbach returns, however, after finishing 16th,

state, setting a state-meet record in the process. In Class B, Freeman won last year’s state boys championship on the strength of three relays. The Flyers will return two of those sprinters in senior Braxton Schmidt and sophomore Collin Helma. Helma took home Class B track MVP honors last season after also capturing the 400-meter dash. Freeman Academy/Marion’s Thaniel Schroeder took third in the 3,200-meter and 1,600-meter runs last season at state. Kimball/White Lake’s sophomore Kennedy Leiferman and eighth-graders Dani Deffenbaugh and Christine Gaulke were all part of last season’s state champion Class B sprint medley relay team. and of course he’s going to be really doing well in the hurdles, too.” Long also expects contributions from seniors and multi-sport athletes Max Donovan (sprinter/hurdler) and Collin Powell (distance runner). “They both placed state this year at wrestling,” Long said. “They do pretty well in any event we can put them in. It’s nice to put them really in any event and we can have success with them. It is great to have senior leadership from Max and Collin.” Sophomore Hayden Evans will anchor the middle distance races. “He would be our middle distance runner and I think middle distance might be our speciality this year,” Long said. The Mount Vernon/Plankinton boys return two sprinters -- junior Jesse Hastings and senior Weston Tobin -that helped the Titans win the Class A medley relay at

AREA BASEBALL PREVIEW: Winner/Colome loses speed, gains power at plate
Royals hope to develop depth during season By Jeremy Karll The Daily Republic The Winner/Colome baseball team will look a little different this season. It has to replace seven seniors from a team which went 13-1 and made the Class B state quarterfinals last season. While coach Drew Weber still expects his team to play aggressive, especially on the base paths, he knows it could have a different identity at the plate. “In past years, our pitching and speed have been
our keys,” Weber said. “This year it’s going to be a little different. We lost a lot of speed that we had, but we do gain power. Hopefully those guys can put the ball in play and put pressure on the other team.” Building depth will be a key to the Royals’ success this season, according to Weber. However, the Royals do return all-stater Jackson Kinzer. The right-hander went 3-0 as he struck out 30 batters and allowed two earned runs over 21 innings.

while teammate Tylee Neugebauer tied for 22nd. Winner is led by junior Addy Root, who took 44th in her second-straight appearance at the state tournament.
Boys
Platte-Geddes came up short of winning the Class B boys golf championship last season, tying Parker for second place, 16 strokes behind state champion Great Plains Lutheran. While the Black Panthers must reshuffle their lineup a bit heading into 2019, they do return Brody Boltjes and Stewart Van Zee, who placed seventh and 17th, respectively, at the state tournament last season. If Platte-Geddes can find two more players to compliment them, the Black Panthers could once again be in the mix for a state title at Wild Oak Golf Course in Mitchell. “Hopefully you’re playing your best golf at the end of the season, but you have to get there first,” Platte-Geddes head coach Frank Cutler said. “We won’t look too far ahead, but we hope to be able to compete with the top teams around the state.” While Platte-Geddes finished as runner-up in the team standings, Gregory’s J.J. Beck was the individual runner-up in Class B, falling to Aberdeen Christian’s Judah Aderhold by two strokes. Beck returns for his senior campaign, while Aderhold has since graduated. Meanwhile, Howard and Freeman look to battle it out for supremacy in the Cornbelt Conference. The Tigers return Noah Hodges after an 11th-place finish at state, while Bailey Sage tied Bon Homme’s Carter Libis -- now a junior -- for 28th a season ago for the Flyers. Tryg Aanenson also looks to build upon finishing 30th for a Freeman team that ended 11th in the team standings.

The Royals also return Layton Thieman, who didn’t allow a run in 4 1/3 innings of work. Phillip Jorgensen will be their starting catcher after missing last season, while Joren Bruun, Jacob Beckers, Fred Whiting, Tyler Olson and Colby Kaiser are expected to play key roles, too. “Just figuring out our depth is going to be a big thing,” Weber said. “Pitching-wise, we’re going to have to find some younger guys to give us valuable innings.” The Royals hadn’t been able to work on their pitching through the first couple weeks of practice, though. They played outside for the first time on March 26. When practicing indoors, Winner/Colome put an emphasis on the fundamentals and strategizing. “The thing that hurts the most is you can’t really work your pitchers and catchers as much,” Weber said about practicing indoors. “You can’t get them on a mound, and that hurts us, but we know everybody is the same way.” Bon Homme/Scotland is looking to defend its Class B state championship after it topped West Central, 7-5, in the title game. It returns all-stater Christian Uecker, as well as key contributors Joey Slama, Beau Rothschadl and Josh Schmidt. Parkston/Ethan/Tripp also made the state quarterfinals during its 10-4 season in 2018. Weber pointed to Platte-Geddes/Dakota Christian/ White Lake/Corsica-Stickney as a team to keep an eye on. The Honkers went 10-4 last season and were defeated in the state quarterfinals. They return standout pitcher Blake Moke. “Moke’s tough,” Weber said. “He’s one of the top pitchers in South Dakota.”

Wins have come at a premium for the Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team during the past two seasons. The Tigers have recorded a combined 29-59 record, including an 11-28 campaign last spring. Yet DWU head coach John Greicar believes that experienced has hardened his players and brought them up to speed as a college baseball team. DWU has not registered a winning record since 2014 -albeit with a Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament championship sandwiched in between in 2015 -- but contending for a playoff berth and a conference championship is on its mind. “With the leadership that we have and from the pitching and defensive side of things, I think that’s definitely our goal,” Greicar said. “It’s just a matter of us putting the pieces together, but we believe in our system, we believe in our players and it’s just a long season. It’s early and it’s important to go piece-by-piece.” The Tigers are off to a 9-13 start to the season, including a 4-7 stretch at the Tucson Invitational at the beginning of March. DWU has also played four GPAC doubleheaders and accumulated a 4-4 record in conference play. Though it’s early, the Tigers have already shown improvement at the plate. They hit .238 as a team a year ago, but have increased that average to .269 thus far. Three DWU players are currently hitting at least .300 and that does not include second-team all-GPAC centerfielder and Colome native Reed Harter, who has started with a bit of a slump, hitting .227
001768050r1
after posting a team-best .328 average in 2018, but does lead the team with 17 RBIs. Winner native Drew DeMers is an everyday starter in the outfield after spending most of his freshman season on the bench and he has responded by hitting .444 and 11 RBIs, along with eight stolen bases. Junior Chandler Bakley has hit .371 with 15 RBIs. Honorable mention allGPAC shortstop Wes Anderson is also hitting .302, which is above around his .296 mark from last season. “We just have a whole team of guys that are ready to breakout,” Greicar said. “That’s kind of been our plan. Our two-year plan has been getting some of these kids experience last year, to see some of the benefits of that to carry over to this year.” On the mound, DWU has also gotten strong performances from a pitchers Ethan Davis and Dominique Boerger, who have posted an ERAs of 2.70 and 2.45, respectively, something the Tigers did not have last season. Gunnar Johnson also has an ERA of 3.00 early in the year. On the whole, however, the pitching staff must continue to improve for DWU to achieve its goals, as the staff has combined for a 6.83 ERA on 211 hits. “Our goal is to just keep getting better with each start and appearance,” Greicar said. “We have some guys that are in some similar roles from last year, but we also have some guys that are in brand new roles also. We’re nowhere near where we want to be yet, but we’re making strides.”

Tibbs puts age aside in his first season as Mitchell Christian coach
Former DWU standout tapped to guide Golden Eagles The girls team is headlined by Staci Wolbrink, who Tibbs believes is on the cusp of a breakout season in the 100, 200 and triple jump and she is also one of the leaders of the girls teams. “She does everything right,” Tibbs said. “She holds everyone accountable. With me being the only coach there, I need leaders to hold people accountable while I’m helping out the other groups. She’s been doing that and she’s a great leader.”
