‘CONTINUING CULTURE CHANGE’ Kernel boys seek a return to the state spotlight By Nick Sabato The Daily Republic Going to the state tournament at the end of the season was once a foregone conclusion for the Mitchell High School basketball program. During a 30-year stretch from 1983-2012, the Kernels made 29 appearances in the state tournament, with 13 trips to the finals and nine state championships. It has been eight years since Mitchell advanced to the state tournament, amassing a 22-108 record during that time, including a 1-19 campaign last season. Last year was the first under head coach Todd Neuendorf, who made seven appearances in 11 seasons at Aberdeen Roncalli. Now, he is ready to return Mitchell basketball to the pedestal it was once proudly perched upon after six straight losing seasons.
“Our expectation is to be back in the state tournament,” Neuendorf said. “Our kids now were pretty small the last time Mitchell was in the state tournament. … We won the last game we played and those seniors had won six games in three years and we have to change that. This has been a culture change and it continues to be a culture change. Winning breeds winning, just like losing breeds losing.” Neuendorf believes the Kernels used last season’s buzzer-beating win over Pierre in the season finale as a stepping stone during the summer. Not only did it avoid a winless campaign and snap a 42-game losing streak, but it provided some confidence for the returning players and underclassmen rising through the program. The Mitchell upperclassmen feel a different vibe around the
team this season. They are ready to wash away the taste of losing — coming from just seven wins in the last three years — but to help a wave of younger players improve to get the program back on track. “We’re sick of losing. I think everyone is,” MHS senior Kiel Nelson said. “We have to get things moving in the right direction for these younger guys so we can get back to what Mitchell basketball once was.” One of Mitchell’s biggest deficiencies last season was on the offensive end of the floor. The Kernels shot just 34.1 percent from the field, 23.7 percent from 3-point range and averaged just 41.9 points per game. Some of that was due to a lack of size and an inside presence. It forced Mitchell to play a slower brand of basketball and cost them on the glass, where the Kernels were outrebounded 32-25 on average.

The returning letterwinners for the Mitchell boys basketball team include, from left, Derek Factor, Kiel Nelson, Kaden Soukup and Carter Jacobsen. With the addition of some size this season — freshman Caden Hinker and sophomores Ryley Johansen and Zane Alm all stand at least 6-foot-5 — Mitchell can move Nelson back to the wing and play a more uptempo style on offense, despite losing leading scorer Carter Cavanaugh to graduation. Not only do the Kernels want to play fast, but they want to
start the season fast, not just in the opening game, but in the opening possession, to build confidence. “When you’ve got a young basketball team, sometimes they don’t realize how good they or could be,” Neuendorf said. “...I think we have a group of kids that don’t care who they’re playing, they just want to get out and play.”
AFTER OFFENSIVE-FOCUSED SUMMER, KERNEL GIRLS EYE RETURN TO STATE By Jeremy Karll The Daily Republic The Mitchell High School girls basketball team’s goal this season is straightforward — return to the state tournament. Coming off a 7-14 season, with a SoDak 16 loss to Brandon Valley, the Kernels are determined not to let their inconsistent offense be their downfall once again. “We need to get back to (state). Last year, I felt like we should’ve been there,” Mitchell
coach Wes Morgan said. “... We never got out, we just couldn’t score in the Round of 16.” To make sure the Kernels don’t suffer the same fate, they’ve put an emphasis on improved shooting since practices started as Morgan noted Mitchell’s defense kept it in most games last season. Although, Morgan said it’s been a focus for a lot longer than a couple of weeks. “In order to get better on offense, you need to
do that in June, July and August,” Morgan said. “I think our kids did a really good job taking it upon themselves to get in the gym and making themselves a better shooter.” Morgan believes all of his guards can knock down shots consistently, and as a result, he hasn’t settled on a starting lineup yet. That said, once he settles on a rotation, he expects everyone to play heavy minutes given the fast tempo the Kernels will play to counter their lack of size.
The Kernels’ lineup might not tower over the opposition, but they still have a viable center in 5-foot-11 senior Mackenzie Miller. Despite wanting to push the tempo, Miller will still have a significant role. “It’s going to be nice having her plugging that middle up,” Morgan said. “(It’s nice to have) someone with size in the middle and being able to post up and help get rebounds.”

MITCHELL GRAPPLERS SEEK MORE TEAM SUCCESS Balanced lineup boasts returning state champion Max By Nick Sabato The Daily Republic Mitchell High School hasn’t had a shortage of individual success on the wrestling mat over the years. Team success has come at a premium for the Kernels, though, as they are coming off a 12th-place finish at the 2018 state meet and a 7-7 record in dual meets. This season, Mitchell believes it can break out of its slump and get back to the days when the Kernels won four consecutive state championships from 1995-1998. “We want to get our team on the podium,” MHS head coach Travis Carpenter said. “That’s our goal. We’ve been off of it for a long time and it’s time to get to that point.” That team success starts with senior Carson Max, the defending 195-pound Class A state champion, who became Mitchell’s first state champion
since Brent Havlik capped his run of three state titles in a row in 2012. Max went 32-3 last season, losing one match to an injury default, while dropping the other two in the waning moments after leading the match. Otherwise, he put forth a stellar junior year, despite doing so with an injured shoulder that could have sidelined most wrestlers. Now completely healthy, Max wants to prove that he’s capable of dominating the competition this year. “I couldn’t get my shoulder above my head at that time, I was hurting a lot and I wasn’t supposed to be there technically,” Max said. “It’s more of a go out and dominate (mindset) this year. Leave no doubt, leave no questions asked that I’m healthy.” While Max is healthy and in search of becoming the program’s ninth wrestler to win multiple state championships,
Kyler Bauder is going to be out for the first month of the season after suffering a knee injury at a camp during the summer. Bauder placed fifth in the 120-pound division at the state meet last season as a sophomore. Logan Sparks returns after placing eighth at the 2017 state meet at 126 pounds and went 22-18 last season at 132. Carter Max is set to compete at 220 pounds this year after going 26-13 at 182 as a junior, while Wyatt Winter also returns after competing in the state tournament last season as a freshman. Cole Gehrke (2016), Sutton Carpenter (24-23) and Max Schoenfelder (20-27) all project to be mainstays in the lineup for the Kernels in each meet. If Mitchell is going to contend for a spot on the podium at state, depth is a necessity and the Kernels should be able to fill out a full lineup each night.

Back row: Sutton Carpenter, Carter Max, Carson Max, Blake Fredericks and Beau Foote. Missing: Kyler Bauder, Cole Gehrke, Tate Ellwein, Tucker Vilhauer and Tyson Degen. “I want 14 guys to go (to state) and I want 14 guys to place,” Carpenter said. “If I
didn’t have that goal, then I would be doing the wrong job.”
MHS GYMNASTS READY FOR ANOTHER BIG SEASON Kernels among state title contenders By Ryan Deal The Daily Republic Expectations are high once again for the Mitchell High School gymnastics team. Last season, the Kernels captured their sixth Class AA state championship since 2007 and return a wealth of experience to the lineup this winter. Mitchell graduated one senior — Bailey Roden — from last season’s state-title team. They return three seniors — Maria Krall, Mackenzie Gauger and Kailee Henglefelt — to go along with a host of underclassmen ready to keep it rolling. “It’s a great group,” Mitchell coach Audra Rew said. “I had JV kids competing varsity skills that on most teams would be their top varsity. So
we had JV kids flipping vaults and doing giants (swings). It’s fun to see. It’s all about doing their very best and they love doing it. We just hope they keep improving and we can just become really deep.” The Kernels return plenty of depth. Krall was second last season in the all-around at state with a 37.175, finishing no worse than fourth in any of the four individual events. Krall was joined by ninth-grader Gracie Czmowski (sixth place, 35.925), eighth-grader Kaylee Bauder (eighth, 35.5) and sophomore Masy Mock (ninth, 35.4) in the top 10, as all four were also all-tournament team selections. “This was a core group that really carried our team,” Rew said. “So they are just kind of maturing.

The returning letterwinners for the Mitchell gymnastics team include, front, from left, Kyra Gropper, Kaylee Bauder, Tessa Allen, Alyssa Hughes, Emily Moody and Chelsey Mohr. Back row: Masy Mock, Mackenzie Gauger, Maria Krall, Kailee Henglefelt, Caitlin Ostbye and Gracie Czmowski. They were pretty young. We were light on some seventh graders last year.
So it’s kind of fun to see them coming around as eighth graders relaxing
and then the older girls, we can put pressure on them and they can kind
of help teach the young ones how to relax and compete hard at a meet.” The Kernels got off to a solid start in the season opener on Nov. 26. Mitchell hosted Yankton and Parkston/Ethan/ Hanson in the MHS Triangular. The Kernels scored a 145.00, but Rew wasn’t too focused on the scores in the opener. “Our goal was really not to look at scores,” Rew said. “So that’s probably about where I thought we would be on a good night.” Rew expects the Kernels and Watertown will be battling it out all season once again for the Class AA state title. “It will probably be us and Watertown,” Rew said. “It is kind of a tradition that’s Mitchell and Watertown, and I kind of expect that’s where we will be again this year.”

GOLDEN EAGLES’ BOYS WANT TO COMPETE, PLAY STRONG DEFENSE By Jeremy Karll The Daily Republic Success for the Mitchell Christian boys basketball team starts with a strong defense and competing for the entirety of each game. Building a competitive culture starts in practice, as the Golden Eagles don’t have a set rotation and will compete for playing time. That gives opportunities to younger players to make an impact, such as sophomore Max Reynen and freshman Micah Frey, who last sea-
son appeared in four and two games, respectively. “We have some young kids that are coming up who will be fighting, competing for minutes,” Mitchell Christian coach Jesse Tolsma said. “That’s always a lot of fun when you have that competitive drive in each other to get better each day.” Tasked with showing the younger players how to compete, such as not taking plays off, will be Mitchell Christian’s upperclassmen. Seniors Alec
Nelson and Luke Knutson, as well as juniors Ty Vander Pol and Joey Feiner, are expected to see significant playing time as all but Knutson played in every game of the Golden Eagles’ 7-14 season last year. Along with embedding a competitive mindset into younger players, Tolsma wants them be leaders on defense to create easy layups for the offense on the other end. Mitchell Christian averaged 8.8 steals and 2.5 blocks per game last season. “That’s something we real-

MITCHELL CHRISTIAN GIRLS FOCUSED ON PLAYER DEVELOPMENT By Jeremy Karll The Daily Republic The Mitchell Christian girls basketball team doesn’t have a lot of new faces but it’s still young, making this season about development more than anything else. The Golden Eagles are off to a promising start in that department as coach Chris Nemec has been impressed with his team’s work ethic in practice. It helps that Mitchell Christian returns a lot of key players from last season, which means the team knew the expectations coming in. “This year has been a lot quicker,” Mitchell Christian coach Chris Nemec said. “They remember a lot of the things from last year, so we don’t have to break things down so much.” That said, despite a lot of returning players, the Golden Eagles don’t have a senior and only have one junior in Anna Cooper, who led the team in scoring and rebounding last season. “Cooper has done a good job just leading and worked hard this summer to improve her shot,” Nemec said. An improved shot would be welcome as the Golden Eagles struggled shooting the ball last season. However, Cooper hasn’t been the only standout thus far.

The returning letterwinners for the Mitchell Christian girls basketball team include, from left, Staci Wolbrink, Anna Cooper, Maggie Reynen and Erica Thompson. Nemec expects sophomore Staci Wolbrink to have a productive year and said freshman Audrey Hofer is “calm and has shown great potential.” Freshman Whisper Eben could be a key post player for the Golden Eagles, while eighth-grader Keira Hofer has a chance to contribute, too. Even with youthful potential, Nemec doesn’t think his team has an identity yet. He wants to see his team rebound and play tough defense, though, while on offense become better outside shooters. Although, improving on more than 20 turnovers per game last season has been the biggest emphasis during Mitchell Christian’s practices. “(Turnovers) made it difficult
to win,” Nemec said. “It made it difficult to have success, so we really have to limit our turnovers this season.” Nemec hopes another year of experience will help his young squad turn the ball over less and bring more success, even if it doesn’t happen right away. “We’re young and a lot of these girls don’t have a lot of experience, so I think for us, it’s just seeing improvements throughout the year,” Nemec said. “Wins and losses I don’t know what to look at, but in terms of what we’re trying to accomplish, making sure they show up every day and trying to improve.” The Golden Eagles travel to Iroquois at 6:30 p.m. on Friday to begin the season.

MARLIN BOYS HOCKEY SETS LOFTY 2018 GOALS By Jeremy Karll The Daily Republic The Mitchell Marlins boys hockey team has made their season goal clear — be a topthree team in the state. With it returning a seniorheavy lineup, its top goal scorer in Jake Jarman and the addition of Nickolas Robinson, the Marlins, who went 5-11-2 and lost both state tournament games last season, don’t expect to be near the bottom of the standings much longer.
“I know these kids are hungry to succeed and prove otherwise to the association and state that they can compete at a higher level and get that title,” first-year Marlin head coach Josh Engquist said. Heading into the season, Engquist said his team has been working on team-chemistry drills after adding Robinson, who played in Sioux Falls last year, to its second line.

MARLIN GIRLS LOOK TO BUILD UPON LAST SEASON’S SUCCESS
Mitchell returns top three scorers, goaltender By Nick Sabato The Daily Republic
After years of toiling in the bottom half of the standings, the Mitchell Marlins girls hockey team finally broke through with a winning record last season. Mitchell finished fourth in the South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association girls varsity standings, finishing with a record of 11-10-3-1 and even ended Aberdeen’s 71-game streak without a loss. This season, the Marlins hope to continue to build on the foundation started last season and pursue a top-three position in the standings. “We’ve got another good group of upperclassmen,” Mitchell head coach Jessica Rezac said. “It’s a mix of seniors and juniors that are just primed to lead the team. We also return our top-three scorers, so that will help out a lot.” The Marlins’ scoring leaders from a year ago are all

Meanwhile, goaltender Katelyn Uithoven also returns after posting after going 11-10-2 last season with a 3.67 goals against average and a .878 save percentage. Rezac admits that the beginning of every new season brings optimism, but this year has a bit of a different feel after last season. “I think every year that we start there’s a different mix to it because of the new girls, and of course, the girls that have left us,” Rezac said. “Of course, having more success last year than previous years has certainly helped the girls and has gotten them up and ready to work hard earlier in the season.” The Marlins have six upperclassmen on the 18-person squad this season, which provides the chance to win games immediately, while simulta-

Mitchell has also added a under-14 girls team this year, which could help pay dividends for the program down the line. “There’s something about coming together on a girls team and being able to make that bond earlier really helps keep girls in sports,” Rezac said. Amick burst onto the scene last season, but Grosdidier (64 career points) and Jones (75 career points) both have a wealth of experience under the belts. While the Marlins averaged 3.7 goals per game last season, they also allowed nearly as many, scoring two more goals than allowed, so defense is an early key. “We can’t win without putting points up, but we’re going to have a lot of focus on defense,” Rezac said. “As long as we’re playing strong and smart back (on defense), those

Because Engquist certainly believes his team has the talent to make a run at a state title. “Obviously these last couple of years haven’t gone the way they wanted it to, and (the seniors) want to make something special out of this senior year,” he said. “I think they took it to heart and focusing on keeping that goal a reality.”again this year.”should be able to fill out a full lineup each night. “I want 14 guys to go (to state) and I want 14 guys to place,” Carpenter said. “If I didn’t have that goal, then I would be doing the wrong job.”

Coach’s comments: This year’s Cub basketball team lacks experience at the varsity level but should be a team that makes up for that experience by how hard they play and compete. We return one starter from last year’s team and will look to the upperclassmen for leadership. A nice group of underclassmen will be looked upon to fill multiple roles on the team and gain valuable experience for the future.

We have some seniors and juniors who will have to step into those roles and provide what was lost. Joey Slama returns for his senior season as the leader of the team. Slama led the team in scoring and was second in rebounding. He also lead of defense, so we will look for him to lead us on both ends of the court. There is some experience coming back, as seniors Josh Schmidt, Christian Uecker and Beau Rothschadl will need to play increased minutes, along with junior Nate Scieszinski, who also collected valuable minutes last season. Others who will contend for spots on the floor are John Kubal, a senior who is back playing after a couple of years out of the game, Zach Cuka (senior), Carter Libis (junior), Kaden Kozak (junior), Connor Peters (junior), Jaxson Schoenebaum (junior), and Carter Uecker (freshman).

From Page 6 in the area. Our schedule will be much tougher than last year and we are hoping it will prepare us for a postseason run. We are a very capable team with the ability to play different styles, but we will have to stay hungry and focused if we want to make a late postseason run.

We return four players with varsity experience and expect to be competitive in our region and conferences. Although our schedule is tough, it will prepare us for the postseason. We will be junior dominated and we will expect all of our upperclassmen to be the leaders on the team. We had a great offseason so we are looking to carry that over to the season.
guard. Coach’s comments: Coming off backto-back seasons of improvement, we are looking forward to this season to see what all we can accomplish together as a team. We are under the leadership of senior Thaniel Schroeder, a lead scorer and goto player since his sophomore year, and 6-foot-6 junior Gavin Pankratz, a great inside-outside, dual-threat player on offense that adds great length on defense as a rim protector. This team will benefit from three outstanding freshmen guards: Quincy Blue, Dylan Johansen and Thalen Schroeder, all who started as eighth graders and are just beginning to grow into their potential. Payton Arbach will make a difference on both ends with his athleticism and length and Connor Epp is an up and coming star point guard that could make a significant impact as a freshman this year. There is a lot of excitement on the team for the season ahead as we look to continue to improve every day.

last year’s team and a third player that was a part time starter in VanDerWerff. Both Stluka and Starr are very athletic and can score and be rebounding leaders for this season. Both can get to the basket but also shoot the perimeter shot. Starr will also draw the task of guarding the other team’s best offensive player. VanDerWerff is our leading scorer back from last year and will be counted on heavily to be a consistent scorer. He can shoot it from the perimeter but also has good size to get it done inside the lane. De Neui’s football injury (knee) is a big loss inside, as he is a strong physical player that handled inside players. At this time, it does not look like he will play this season. Hubers, Boltjes and Millar all handle the ball well and look to step in to help replace the three starting guards from a season ago. VanderPol and Whalen also look to fill the role and give us minutes. Our schedule does not change much and the Black Panthers will need new players to step up and produce with the loss of three starting guards. We will need to use our athleticism and shooting to be successful.

We will be big and athletic and will look to use that to our advantage this season.

Coach’s comments: A year after graduating four starters, lone starter Mason Dennis will be returning to lead a young Highlander team. Others that will join Dennis will be seniors Tristan Frederich, Dallas Fuerst and junior Ty Mogck. freshman Lucas Dennis will be seeing plenty of floor time as well. We will have to rely on speed and reads this year, we don’t have that dominant big guy in the middle to take pressure off our shooters.

AREA GYMNASTICS PREVIEWS
Coach: Sherri Knippling Year coaching: 25th Region: 2A State finish last year: Seventh Top returners: Alyssa Allen, 10; Kazney Knippling, 10; Kathrinn Hopkins, 10; Grace DuVall, 11; Mianna Tveit, 11; Allison Hough, 8; Zeta Naser, 9 Top newcomers: Annie Thompson, 7; Angie Lopez, 7; Abigail Hough, 8; Blakely Nogy, 8; Emily Shepard, 8; Melaya Dominguez, 8; Jane Skustad, 8 Coach’s comments: The next couple years will most definitely be re-building years, as we have a fairly young, inexperienced team. The team also lost two strong gymnasts from last year: Ciara Hough and Mikayden Weston. I look for a majority of our points to come from our five juniors and sophomores, with Zeta Naser and our 8th graders to fill in some gaps. This will be a tough year to make it to state as a team or as an individual,
Lyman Coach: April Reis Region: 2A State finish last year: Did not qualify Key gymnasts: Keeleigh Elwood, 8; Haleigh Elwood, 10.

Top newcomers: Tayla Schmidt, 9; Kadence Filter, 8; Aubrie Biteler, 8; London Sudbeck, 7; Shelby Schmidt, 7; Grace Lindeman, 7; Makayla Sonne, 7. Coach’s comments: Now in its fifth year, our program started with five athletes and we’re ramping up this year with 14 young athletes. In 2018, we finished third as a team and we had three individual top-20 finishers at the state individual meet. The entire team is back this year and ready for a big season. McKenzie Prunty, our only senior, along with her individual and team state winners from 2018, Tyra Zens and Jada Plastow are coming in strong and healthy to another season leading our other returners and newcomers. These three are a powerhouse and strong contributors on all events toward our team score. Jaya Kurtenbach was an all-around competitor for our team last year and is also coming in to the season healthy and with some new skills on events. From our group of newcomers, some of which have previous gymnastics experience, are all see-
ing strong gains in their skills and routines already this early in the season. A newcomer and seventh grader, London Sudbeck, is one to keep an eye on. She has club gymnastics experience and has very competitive skills with the older athletes at such a young age already. Our team of 14 is excited to take on a new year. We have also introduced a new assistant coach to our team, Lindsey Sivertsen, who has many years of gymnastics experience in addition to competing for Bon Homme gymnastics in her high school athletic career.

these girls are really going to need to step up. I look for Madison, Deuel, and Parkston to be the top three teams in the state. Our goal for the season will inevitably be to make it to state as a team, and qualify 3-4 individuals on each event.

AREA WRESTLING PREVIEWS BURKE/GREGORY
Information was submitted by coaches or compiled by The Daily Republic’s sports staff:
AC/DC
Ryan Deal / Republic The returning letterwinners for the Burke/Gregory wrestling team include, front, from left, Dimitri Davis, Owen Hansen, Jordan Vosika, Tucker Even, Jackson Eklund, Kort Schonebaum, Mason Hood and Tyler Murray. Back row: Dominic Hanson, Gunnar Stephens, Frank Even, Rhoss Oliver, Taron Serr, JJ Beck, Luke Murray and Finn Hanson.
Denelle Dvorak / For The Daily Republic Jacob Maynard is the lone returning letterwinner for the Andes Central/Dakota Christian wrestling team.
Andes Central/Dakota Christian Coach: Doyle Johnson Year coaching: First Region: 3B Top returnees: Jacob Maynard, senior, Heavyweight; Apollo Weddell, freshman, 138 pounds; Joey Baas, eighth grade, 130 pounds. Top newcomers: Carlin Hopkins, seventh grade, 105 pounds; Cole Bergin, seventh, 119 pounds; Quinn Ashes, freshman, 220 pounds; Chaz James, senior, 171 pounds. Emilio Cournoyer, senior, 182 pounds. Coach’s comments: We have quite a few younger wrestlers this year. There are several sixth graders also wrestling withusso that will help us in the coming years. My expectations are that we continue to improve each and every match and tournament. Hopefully at the end of the year, many of our wrestlers will achieve their goals.
Taron Serr, ninth; Owen Hansen, eighth grade; Guinnar Stephens, eighth grade. Top newcomers: Isaac Barreto, senior; Ethan Dargatz, senior; Reece Odenbach, sophomore; Brady Petterson, sophomore; Zach Eklund, freshman; Tyler Spencer, freshman; Mason Peck, freshman, Kade Stukel, eighth grade. Coach’s comments: We expect to be very competitive both as a dual team and in tournaments with a good number of kids out and able to fill all 14 weight classes.
land, River Burkard, Will Mahnke, Kordel Chemela, Dominic Santiago, Garret and Gunner Ristau will all be challenging for a varsity spot and have done the offseason work to earn a place at regions and state. The off season saw the Cubs taking part in the summer lifting program and made a lot of gains throughout the offseason and summer. The camps that were held in Chamberlain and the team camp at Northern State University were well attended and I saw many great things happening with our technique and working together as a team. With the depth that our team now has, we should fill every weight class and have a chance to compete for team trophies at most tournaments. The common goal the team and coaching staff has is to place in the top-six as a team at the state tournament. I believe we have the core group of wrestlers to accomplish this goal and if we can get two or three outliers to earn a place on the podium, it should solidify that goal. We have changed up our schedule for this season, hoping to see some different opponents and challenges. It should be an exciting season for the team and Cub fans.
HOWARD
Jacob Novak, Kade Konstanz, Austin Severson, Kameron Styles. Coach’s comments: We are returning a lot of experienced wrestlers this year including seven wrestlers who have qualified for the state tournament in years past and also a talented young group of wrestlers to go along with the state qualifiers. We will look to have a solid dual team again this year and look for a talented crew to take the next step to get the entire team on the podium at the state tournament in February.

Coach’s comments: In his fifth season as head coach of the Parkston Trojans, Coach Boehmer will depend on his veteran coaching staff that looks to develop their lower grades and continue the maturation of upperclassmen. What the Trojans lack in numbers, they will try to make up with experience and talent. Trojans will lean on the senior leadership of three-time state place winner Luke Bietz, twotime state qualifier Slayton Neugebauer and state qualifier Rocky Berg. After two previous season setbacks with major injuries, Bietz comes into his senior season health and has high expectations for a top state finish. Neugebauer looks to close the gap and become a state placewinner, after coming one match short in the past two seasons. Berg will look to bounce back from narrowly missing the state tournament last season to be back in the mix with some of the top lower/middle weights around the state. A healthy season and the continuation of improving his skills, Berg looks to become a state placewinner in his final season. The Trojans will look for big contributions from junior state qualifier Cordell Murtha in the middle weights to improve on last year’s progress. Lastly, returning state placewinners Riley Weber and Landon Sudbeck will start the Trojans off and look to compete with the top lower weights across the state.

We are hoping to reload and try to improve as a team this year. Last year we were a lighter weight team. I think we will be more of a middleweight team and we have a few more guys that are going to be big contributors this year. With four returning placers and four more state qualifiers, we hope to keep improving every week. We kind of have a log jam in the middle weights, but we will have that sorted out throughout the year. I hope we can get some more placewinners this year because we had a few kids that came up a little short last year.
