With packed schedule, Mitchell’s rodeo spectators can expect thrills Daredevils and excitement on display in 2018 By Abbie Lambert The Daily Republic The 48th annual Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo returns to Mitchell with a full schedule of events at the Horseman’s Sports Arena July 19-22. Rodeo performances will take place each night July 19-22 starting at 8 p.m. at the Horseman’s Sports Arena. Stampede Rodeo Committee Chairman Jim Miskimins says crowds can expect an unique show this year, with a main entertainer that veers away from traditional rodeo entertainment. This year, the committee is excited to bring the WI FMX

Wisconsin Freestyle motocross team to the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo. WI-FMX is comprised of a group of stuntmen who with the help of portable ramps are able to hurl across the sky, giving thrilling performances. “I think it’s going to be different, fresh, exciting and fun,” Miskimins said. “I think people are going to really like it.” Along with a new, exciting main act, the rodeo is working with a new scoreboard provider to bring more action and color to viewers. I love rodeoing. That’s why I do it. You get to a lot of rodeos and a lot of great rodeos. – ELI LORD By Ryan Deal The Daily Republic It’s go time for Eli Lord. The Sturgis cowboy has been criss-crossing the nation, competing at rodeos in eight states as he’s looking to capitalize on the busiest stretch of the rodeo season. “You make or break your summer right here — more or less,” Lord recently told The Daily Republic. “I am going to like 16 rodeos in the next 12 days. They are all big rodeos. They all pay a lot. You get in a lot of miles and you get a lot of chances to win.” The stretch around Independence Day, which is dubbed “Cowboy Christmas,” is a gold mine on the rodeo trail. It features rodeos dotted all across the country. For Lord, he’s hit up rodeos in South Dakota, North Dakota, Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Montana this year. “I love it,” he said. “I love rodeoing. That’s why I do it. You get to a lot of rodeos and

a lot of great rodeos.” Lord will make his annual stop at the 48th Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo at Horseman’s Sports Arena on July 19-22. Last year, the rodeo was good to Lord as he pocketed $2,474 and was the allaround cowboy. “That rodeo is always great,” Lord said. “They have a good crowd. It’s one of the best rodeos that we have in our circuit. I like it because

it is a two-header in the steer wrestling. So I get to go over there and run two. You get double the chance to win money and it’s just been one of my favorite rodeos for a long time.” This season, Lord is near the top of the Badlands Circuit all-around standings with more $5,300 earned. The 24-year-old competes in team roping and steer wrestling. He team ropes with Midland’s Jade Nelson. Lord’s family roots steered him into the rodeo profession. Lord’s father, J.B., is a multiple-time Badlands Circuit champion. Little brother, Levi, is also a team roper. “My dad rodeoed for a long time — his whole life and so we always had horses around,” Eli said. “I rode horse from as soon as I was old enough to sit on one. That was just kind of what we did as a family. We would get out

of school and we would go rope and in the summertime, I would go with dad to the rodeos.” Eli’s mom, Kelly Lytle, also helps with his rodeo ventures and he also relies on other friends and family members. “I have had people that lent me horses and sent me with horses,” Eli said. “I have an uncle in Florida that has really helped me out a lot. It takes a whole bunch of people. It’s not just me and not just my dad. There’s a lot that goes into it — more than what people see.” Lord started competing when he was a teenager, turned professional when he was 18 and he immediately hit the ground running. He bought his permit in 2013 and needed to earn at least $1,000 in PRCA-sanctioned rodeos to become a card holder. “I bought my permit and I filled my permit at my first rodeo and I bought my card the next day,” he said. He’s been on the go ever since.

AN EVENT-BY-EVENT LOOK AT THE EVENTS OF PROFESSIONAL RODEO Throughout this special section, there are explanations of each event at the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo. The explanations are reprinted with permission from the professional rodeo website, prorodeo.com.

Bareback riding ►►

Bareback riding is one of the most physically demanding events in rodeo. A bareback rider sits directly on a bucking horse, with only his own “riggin’” to hang onto. As the horse comes out of the chute, the cowboy’s feet must be above the break of the horse’s shoulders. He holds his feet up at least through the horse’s first move, usually a jump, then spurs the horse on each jump, matching the horse’s rhythm and showing control rather than flopping around. He may not touch the horse, his equipment or himself with his free hand. If the ride lasts eight seconds, two judges award up to 25 points each for the cowboy’s “exposure” to the strength of the horse and his spurring technique and up to 25 points each for the horse’s bucking strength and moves.

Steer wrestling ►► Steer wrestling demands coordination between two mounted cowboys — the contestant and a hazer who controls the steer’s direction — and their horses. The cowboys back their horses into the box on each side of the steer. When the contestant nods, the chute gate opens and the steer gets a head start before the cowboys start to chase him. As the steer wrestler draws even, he dismounts from his horse, which is moving at perhaps 30 miles an hour. He grasps the steer’s horns and digs his boot heels into the dirt to slow down the 500- to 600-pound steer. Then he wrestles the steer onto its side; when all four legs point in the same direction, the clock stops. Times vary widely depending on the size of the arena.

Team roping Team ropers work as partners: one header and one heeler who move in precise coordination. They and their horses start in the “box.” When the header nods, the chute gate opens and the steer gets a head start. The header throws the first loop, which must catch the steer’s head or horns, protected by a horn wrap. Then the header dallies — wraps his rope around his saddle horn — and moves his horse to pull the rope taut, changing the direction of the steer. That gives the heeler the opportunity to catch both of the steer’s hind legs with his own rope; most heelers try to time their throws to catch the legs when they are in the air. After the catch, the heeler also dallies, to stop the steer. When the ropes are taut and both horses face the steer, the time is recorded. Times vary widely depending on the size of the arena.

Saddle bronc riding In rodeo’s classic event, the saddle bronc rider sits on a specialized saddle – it has no horn, and the stirrups are set forward. In the chute, the cowboy adjusts his grip on the rein and perhaps the horse’s position. When the gate opens, his boots must be above the breaks of the horse’s shoulders. After the horse’s first move, usually a jump, the cowboy begins spurring in long, smooth strokes, in sync with the horse’s jumps – legs straight when the bronc comes down, toward the back of the saddle at the top of the jump. His only handhold is a sixfoot braided rope; his free hand may not touch his equipment, his body or the horse. If the ride lasts the required eight seconds, it is scored by two judges – one on each side – who assess difficulty and control. Each judge awards up to 25 points for the cowboy’s performance and up to 25 points for the animal’s performance, for a potential of 100 points.

To start this sprinting event, the tie-down roper and his horse back into the box; the cowboy carries a rope in one hand and a “piggin’ string” in his mouth. When the cowboy nods, the chute opens and the calf gets a head start. The cowboy throws a loop over its head; his horse stops and pulls the rope taut while the cowboy jumps off, dashes down the rope, lays the calf on the ground and uses the piggin’ string to tie any three of its legs together. Then he lifts his hands to show he is finished, and the field flag judge drops a flag to stop the clock. The horse is trained to keep the rope taut until the cowboy remounts and moves the horse toward the calf, giving the rope slack. If the calf’s legs stay tied correctly for six seconds, it’s a qualified run and the time stands.

Barrel racing ►► Barrel racing is just that – a race against time in a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels set up in the arena. A rider can choose to begin the cloverleaf pattern to the right or left. The time begins when the horse and rider cross the predetermined start line and stops when they come back across the same line. Each run is timed to the hundredths of a second, making every fraction of a second count. (Starting in 2012, Canadian rodeos now time to the thousandth of a second.) Each tipped-over barrel adds a five-second penalty to the time. Although barrel racing is one of seven events common to many PRCA-sanctioned rodeos, it is administered by a separate organization, the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association.

Bull riding ►►

Bull riding is rodeo’s most dangerous event. In the chute, the bull rider settles on the bull’s back, wraps his braided rope around the bull’s girth, then loops the rope around his hand and back into his palm so he can grip it tightly. When he nods, the gate is opened and the bull lunges out of the chute. Spurring is optional – the primary goal for the cowboy is to stay on for eight seconds without touching himself, his equipment or the bull with his free hand. The cowboy will be scored highly for staying in the middle of the bull, in full control of the ride. If the ride lasts the required eight seconds, it is scored by two judges who assess difficulty (the bull’s spinning, jumping and kicking, lunging, rearing and dropping, and side-to-side motion) as well as the cowboy’s degree of control. Each judge awards up to 25 points for the cowboy’s performance and up to 25 points for the animal’s performance, for a potential of 100 points.

Steer roping Some PRCA rodeos include steer roping, which resembles tie-down roping but requires the cowboy to catch and control a large steer (about 450-600 pounds.). The mounted cowboy backs into the box and nods when he’s ready; the steer gets a head start, just as the calf does in tie-down roping. The cowboy must catch the steer by first roping it around the horns, which are protected by horn wraps and reinforced with rebar. PARADE INVITES PUBLIC TO ENJOY WILD RIDE By Abbie Lambert The Daily Republic The Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo parade is back and ready for another wild ride. This year’s theme, “Experience The Wild Ride,” is a hat tip to the “wild” performances the public will enjoy during the duration of the rodeo. The parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 21, running through the downtown area on Main and Lawler streets. All entries will be lined up by 10 a.m. Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo Parade Chairman Mike Dittmer expects a turnout of more than 100 entries this year, ranging from traditional floats and antique cars to horses and tractors. “We get tractors, ATVs, classic cars, lots of trucks, rock haulers, a lot of organizations, banks, big businesses and little businesses.” Dittmer said. “We get a little bit of everything.” In his second year of chairing the

parade portion of the event, Dittmer spent last year’s parade learning the ins and outs to running an event full of organized chaos. His past experience has taught him to prepare for the worst and expect the best. “No matter how prepared you are there is always something that comes up,” he said. As for the theme, Dittmer and the rest of the Corn Palace Stampede committee are excited about all the possibilities the fresh theme represents. “It gives us a chance to draw some younger crowds to the rodeo,” he explained. “Wild rides for the bronc busting, bull riding and motocross ties into the wild ride experience.” With each successful parade comes a group of people who work hard to ensure the event goes off without a hitch. he growing popularity of rodeo, which, according to the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association attracts 30 million fans each year, has piqued the curiosity of many people who have never before attended a rodeo or watched an event on television. Upon discovering the rodeo, men, women and children often find it as compelling if not more compelling than most popular mainstream sports. For those interested in rodeo but uncertain about its terminology, the following are a few terms to know, courtesy of the PRCA.

BREAKING THE BARRIER

This occurs during a timed event when a rider leaves the box too soon, failing to give the bull a sufficient head start. Riders who break the barrier are assessed a 10-second penalty.

BULLFIGHTER

An athlete who protects the bull rider after he dismounts or is bucked off. A bullfighter can distract the bull by directing its attention to the exit gate or even stepping between the bull and the bull rider.

CHUTE

a pen that holds an animal safely in position.

COVERING

DRAW

Conducted three days before each PRCA rodeo, the draw is random and assigns each roughstock competitor a specific bucking horse or bull. Time-event contestants are assigned a calf or steer in a random on-site draw shortly before each rodeo begins.

FLAGS

used in rodeo’s timed events so judges can signal the timers to stop the clocks. Judges in the arena will drop the flags.

FLANKMAN

a cowboy or cowgirl who works in the bucking chutes, adjusting the flank strap around the animal before the ride.

GO-ROUND

each round of competition in a rodeo.

HAZER

the cowboy who rides on the right side of the steer from the contestant to make sure the steer runs straight.

By Jeremy Karll The Daily Republic lex Bergeson started going to a lot of rodeos in middle school, but he didn’t start steer wrestling until after his freshman year of high school. But the Mitchell High School graduate has now risen to the title of the state’s best high school steer wrestler, winning the South Dakota championship June 16. Bergeson will be one of four steer wrestlers to represent South Dakota at the National High School Finals Rodeo on July 16-21 in Rock Springs, Wyoming. “It was awesome. It was better than anything I could have wished for going into the season,” Bergeson said. “It was just a great overall feeling going in there to go and do what I wished to accomplish going into the season.” He finished with 80 points and 18.73 seconds of total time. was the only other competitor to top 70 points, but Bergeson was the only competitor to finish under 20 seconds. Bergeson also entered the competition with 28 season points, tied for the third most among the 27 competitors. He recorded a time of 7.32 in the first go and 6.88 in the second go, earning 22 points. As a result, he entered the short go as the leader, but he wasn’t focused on clinching a state title. “In the last round of the short go, a couple of people missed that were close to me,” Bergeson said. “I was going in leading, so I just wanted to get a decent time to make sure I solidified a spot on the national team in the top-four. But really I wasn’t trying to run anything too crazy.” He clinched a spot on the national team and won a state title with the fastest time of the competition of 4.53 to earn 10 points. While he’s excited that he won a state title, he’s more excited to represent his state at nationals.

He hopes his experience at last year’s nationals will help calm his nerves this time around. “I’m sure once I get down there, it’ll start to come to be, and the nerves will fade away,” Bergeson said. “... Having gone down there before, I got to feel how everything works and I’ll have an idea of how nationals is run.” Since winning state, Bergeson has competed in two 4-H rodeos, though said they didn’t go as well as he hoped. He has also tried to practice more, despite it being hard to find a good practice steer. “I have a dummy that we picked up from some friends and really trying to get on that a whole lot,” Bergeson said. Bergeson said he plans on competing in more rodeos after nationals this summer. But for now, his focus is set on making sure he’s prepared to help South Dakota. “Just continuing to work and get better, and trying to get myself ready for nationals and other rodeos during the summer,” Bergeson said, when asked about his plans for the next month. “And really trying to focus on fundamentals and the basics.”
