By KATHERINE CLAYTON The Daily Republic
South Dakota State Fair employees stuck to the theme of “Thrills, Squeals and Ferris Wheels” when they were planning new events for the 2016 South Dakota State Fair. The fair administration, according to the state fair’s assistant manager, Candi Briley, is particularly excited about the reimagining of the FFA Animal Nursery. It is now known as the FFA Ag Adventure Center. Previously, fair goers could go to the the nursery to see baby farm animals. Now, the building will be used to bring the atmosphere of a farm or ranch to the attendees of the fair. “We’re extremely excited about the FFA Ag Adventure Center,” Briley said. “The FFA Ag Adventure Center is really going to bring people closer to, I guess, everyday life on the farm and ranch.” Typical experiences at the Ag Adventure Center will include, but not be limited to, a sow giving birth, bottle feeding a calf, watching baby chicks hatch and milking cows. In order to make these experiences possible, a cement floor was poured in the building, along with other minor changes. In addition to a reimagined building, the fair has now added cheese sculpting, chalk art competitions, a “Fair”cycled art contest and many other activities.

The former FFA Animal Nursery has been renamed as the FFA Ag Adventure Center. Prior to the reimagining, the nursery was a location where fairgoers could see baby animals. Now, spectators can witness farm and ranch life in action.

For additional dairy details, see page 24.
The fair is partnering with the Midwest Dairy Association for the cheese sculpting event, at which spectators can watch sculptors create masterpieces out of cheese. The sculpting will take place Sept. 2-4 at the Dakota Marketplace. “We’re excited to finally have something here at the fair that will hopefully
grow every year,” Briley said. Another medium introduced the fair is chalk. The Farm Bureau partnered with the South Dakota State Fair to bring produce the “Chalk it up to Ag” competition, which brings awareness to agriculture. From a pool of applicants, six artists will be chosen and they will create chalk masterpieces about agriculture on the first day of the fair, and fair attendees will choose their favorite design.
The winning chalk drawing will receive a trophy and cash prize. Another competition new to the fair is the “Fair”cycled art contest. “The challenge is to make indoor or outdoor art with the theme of the fair, using stuff you have laying around your house, basement, yard, wherever,” Briley said. The contest is split into two divisions: table table art and yard art. Each division is further split into two age brackets: 17 years and under and 18
years and older. First- and second-place winners of the competition will receive a cash prize. In addition to challenging individuals to create sculptures out of cheese, chalk and recycled art, the fair is also challenging individuals to pay it forward. The final day of the fair is going to be “Pay it Forward Day.” “The fair is going to pay it forward to people coming in, then we’re going to pair up with businesses to pay it forward to fairgoers,” Briley said. “We’re just going to be doing some really cool things.” Area businesses can either purchase gate admission that is then donated to individuals in need or the business will
randomly hand out gate admission passes at the gate on Sept. 5. Another way individuals can pay it forward, Briley said, is by bring a nonperishable food item from 7 to 10 a.m. on Sept. 5 and the person will get $2 off their gate admission. Individuals that bring a can of soup to the grandstand monster truck entertainment will get a free ride on a monster truck. Briley said fair attendees can also pay it forward on an individual basis by buying gate admission for someone behind them at the fair or purchase food for a friend from a vendor. “That’s super cool,” Briley said, “and we hope that it takes off.”

HURON — The 2016 South Dakota State Fair entertainment lineup offers something for everyone. Various genres of music are represented in the grandstand and free entertainment arenas, as well as shows focused for a family audience. “Our grandstand continues to offer a wide variety of entertainment — something for all ages to enjoy — whether it’s classic country or new country or something for the rock fans,” said Candi Briley, assistant manager for the fair, “and, of course, the great family entertainment on Monday with the monster trucks.” Other entertainment options, if fair attendees aren’t interested in the country and rock artists, are the Red Wilk Construction Bull Bash, the monster trucks and the
soccer demolition derby. “There is really something for everyone to enjoy, and if you buy your tickets before Wednesday, Aug. 31, you do get free gate admission into the fair,” Briley said, “so that’s a great perk for fairgoers.”
Grandstand: Wednesday/ Thursday, Aug. 31-Sept. 1: The grandstand entertainment begins with a thrill. “The Bull Bash, for sure, offers that action-packed, live, thrilling sort of component,” Briley said. Fairgoers have the opportunity to see the Red Wilk CBR Bull Bash at 8 p.m. on Aug. 31. Tickets for the CBR, or championship bull riding event, are $17 for adults and $12 for youth aged 15 years and younger. The event has been featured at the fair since 2005, and it continues to offers fair attendees an

opportunity to watch professional bull riding. Briley said the event is a mix of action and honor. Throughout each performance, veterans will be recognized for their military service. The second bull riding event will start at 8 p.m. on Sept. 1. Tickets for all events can be purchased online at sdstatefair. com, by calling the ticket office at (866) 605-3247 or at the State Fair Administration Office in Huron. Tickets can be purchased for individual concerts or a ticket package.
Friday, Sept. 2: The concert series will kick off with Blackhawk at 7 p.m. on Sept. 2. Several popular hits by the country band include, “I Sure Can Smell the Rain,” “Goodbye Says It All” and “There You Have it.” Dwight Yoakam follows

Saturday, Sept. 3: The entertainment for Sept. 3 blends different styles of music
into two performances. Reckless Kelly opens with their signature country-rock music at 7 p.m. The group is known for songs such as “Good Luck and True Love,” “Long Night Moon,” “Bullet Proof” and “Somewhere in Time.” “Reckless Kelly will bring that red dirt country vibe to that show,” Briley said. “There’s such a niche
following of red dirt in South Dakota that those people really come out and support the shows. That’ll be really cool.” Fellow country artist Kip Moore will follow Reckless Kelly at the grandstand. “Kip Moore will be a great show because he’s a growing country artist in the country world,” Briley said.

recent album, “Under the Influence.” The stage sustains the rock influence with John Kay and Steppenwolf. Fans will recognize the group’s hits “Born to be Wild,” “Magic Carpet Ride” and “Monster.” Briley said Foghat and John Kay and Steppenwolf constitute the rock concert in the state fair’s grandstand entertainment.

John Kay and Steppenwolf continue the Sept. 4 grandstand performances after Foghat.
The final grandstand performance is the Monster Trucks and Soccer Ball Demolition Derby on Sept. 5.
Tickets are $42 for reserved seating and $37 for standing/general admission.
“It’s easier to load the whole family up and go to the monster trucks than it is to go to a concert,” Briley said. For the South Dakota State Fair’s Pay it Forward Day, individuals that bring a can of soup between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m to the fair will get a free ride on a monster truck. The soup will be donated to the Heartland Region Backpack
Monday, Sept. 5: The Monster Trucks and Soccer Ball Demolition Derby demolishes the final day of state fair entertainment. The event features four monster trucks: Slick ‘N’ Ace, Pony Express, Ghost
Ryder and Girl Power. The monster trucks and their drivers come from across the midwest. During the performance, there will be a soccer ball demolition derby where the monster trucks play soccer with a giant soccer ball made of metal. Monster trucks and a soccer demolition derby provide family fun for the last day of the fair, according to Briley.

The fair welcomes back the comedy duo Williams and Ree to the free entertainment line up. Briley is excited to see the pair return to the fair this year. Williams and Ree, according to Briley, come back every couple of years to the fair and she is happy to see them return because they have a dedicated fan base in South Dakota. “We have a slug of other entertainers and things,” Briley said. “I think that is one of the cool things about the fair is really the amount of entertainment.” Sherwin & Pam Linton and the Cotton Kings return to the State Fair for this year at the AARP Centennial Stage. In addition to performing, Sherwin Linton invites South Dakota entertainers to play before his performance. “With some of them, he’s helped fuel their start in the music industry and that’s really cool,” Briley said. Fairgoers can enjoy other free entertainment including The Beerslingers, The Dweebs, Dustin Evans and the Good Times Band, Dirty Word, Johnny Holm Band and others. The free entertainment can be found at the Farm Bureau Dakotaland Stage and the AARP Centennial Stage.

Popular events, poultry activities return By KATHERINE CLAYTON The Daily Republic
HURON — Tradition continues at the 2016 South Dakota State Fair. Fan-favorite activities and competitive exhibits return to the fair along with fairgrounds accommodations. According to Candi Briley, assistant fair manager, events like the pork butt battle and chili cookoff have remained constant fair activities over the years. “People look for that because it just adds much more value to your gate pass,” Briley said. The livestock portion of the fair has maintained popularity as well. A positive change from last year for the livestock portion of the fair is the re-addition of poultry. The poultry
portion was eliminated last year due to the avian flu, but this year, Shelley Noonan, camping and competitive exhibits coordinator, has planned several poultry-themed activities for the fair, including a pigeon release and pigeon rolling contest. “Those are some fun events,” Noonan said. Team penning and ranch rodeo were added to the already popular events held in the Hippodrome. “Those events have really just done really well for us,” Briley said. “People like to come be a part of them and they’re great spectator events.” Other events in the Hippodrome are barrell racing, the stock dog competition, team roping and cowboy mounted shooting.
Briley said people competing in those events could stay for the whole fair and be active in the Hippodrome throughout their stay. Those camping on the fairgrounds are invited to again compete in a campsite decorating contest, and this year, the families will decorate their campsite based on the theme of “Thrills, Squeals and Ferris Wheels.” “We have some very creative families that enter into that,” Noonan said. The first-place prize for the best-decorated campsite is a voucher for the individual’s campsite to be free of charge the following year. Second-place winners receive a pair of grandstand tickets to a concert of their choice.

Down to the ‘finishing touches’ Majority of Nordby Exhibit Hall to be completed by start of South Dakota State Fair By KATHERINE CLAYTON The Daily Republic
Construction of the Nordby Exhibit Hall is nearing completion in time for the 2016 South Dakota State Fair. The exhibit hall and corridors of the facility will be functional for the fair Aug. 31 through Sept. 5. “They’re getting down to putting on the finishing touches,” said Peggy Besch, state fair manager. Doors and lights are being installed in the building, and walls are being painted throughout the facility. According to Besch, this year will be the first time the hall has been used to showcase 4-H static exhibits, including artwork and photography. Next year, 4-H speaking and performing arts will be performed on an outdoor stage on the northeast side of the building. It will not be held there this year due to the northeast portion of the building being muddy. Besch said grass will be put down before the space is used for 4-H performances. “Fairgoers are going to be really impressed and excited to see that facility,” Besch said. “It’s pretty magnificent.” The 48,000-square-foot building with a 30,000-square-foot exhibit hall will be the hub for

the State Fair and Beadle County 4-H administrators. The facility can be also used for community events including weddings, conventions and receptions.
Other areas of the hall are still undergoing construction, but the fair staff made it a priority to have the exhibit hall available for this year’s fair. Besch said the kitchen will
not be complete for the fair, but she had anticipated this and the kitchen demonstrations will be held for the third year at the Huron High School. The office space in the build-
ing will also not be done by the fair, but Besch told the contractors that it did not need to be completed because the focus was completing the exhibit hall. According to Besch, 4-H clubs across South Dakota have been fundraising for the building. Donors throughout South Dakota have also been contributing funds to the project. The hall was named in honor Earl Nordby, who donated $1.5 million toward the building. Nordby died in March, and he is remembered as a generous supporter of 4-H. “We’ve had a lot of large sponsors and sponsor classrooms. We thank the Nordby family,” said Loren Noess, fair commissioner and campaign chairman for the Nordby Exhibit Hall project though the South Dakota State Fair Foundation. “We’ve been really thankful for such a generous individual.” At the end of July, Besch said they had $340,000 left to fundraise for the $4.7 million project. “Those efforts will be ongoing,” Besch said. According to the South Dakota State Fair Foundation, 93 percent of funds for the facility have been raised since the project started in 2013 after the former Clover Hall was demolished. “That building was in a real disarray and in really poor See NORDBY, Page 24

shape,” Besch said. “Quite frankly, it had served it’s time.” The Nordby Exhibit Hall dedication will take place at 4 p.m. on Sept. 4. The dedication corresponds with the 4-H barbeque on Sunday. Noess said the South Dakota State Fair Foundation continues to sell bricks for $1,000 for the Nordby Exhibit Hall to raise the remaining funds for the facility. Names of the purchasers will be engraved into the bricks, which will be installed somewhere outside of the Nordby Exhibit Hall. The South Dakota State Fair Foundation will also be offering other ways of donating to the facility during the fair. The new facility, Besch
said, is a location that is worthy to showcase the projects and performances of the 4-H members and a location the 4-H members can be proud of. “(The building) speaks to the impact and the importance that 4-H has had on kids and families and leadership,” Besch said. “These are our future leaders. It says volumes about how people recognize the value of 4-H.” In the future, Besch feels the Nordby Exhibit Hall will serve as prominent building on the fairgrounds. It already helped secure the 2018 and 2019 National Junior High Finals Rodeo, and Besch hopes that the fairgrounds will book more national events because of Nordby Exhibit Hall. “This building,” Besch said, “certainly makes our package that much more attractive.”

Huron artist and SD Dairy Princess to be featured at first-time event for fair HURON — While common to many fairs across the Midwest, cheese sculpting is making its debut at the South Dakota State Fair this year. Huron area artist Doug Dutenhoffer will be the featured sculptor on Sept. 2, and Sept. 3. Roger Scheibe, with the Midwest Dairy Association, will be the featured sculptor on Sept. 4. Dutenhoffer will sculpt wheels of cheese following a fair theme, while Scheibe will follow a “Dairy 3 for Me” theme. Scheibe will also have a block of cheese available for anyone that wants to carve alongside him on Sept 4. Sculptures will be on display through Sept. 5 at noon. “Since South Dakota is known nationwide for its cheese production and processing plants, it is only
fitting that we start a tradition to recognize the state’s cheese industry with a little cheese carving exhibition,” says Scheibe. “ ‘Dairy 3 for Me’ is a campaign established by South Dakota dairy farmers to recognize the vital role that dairy plays as part of a healthy and well-balanced diet. So stop in and pledge your commitment to getting your three recommended servings of dairy every day.” The cheese sculpting will be located in the Dakota Marketplace building and is sponsored by Midwest Dairy and your local S.D. dairy producers. In addition to the cheese sculpting, S.D. Dairy Princess Carrie Weaver, of Bancroft, will be doing a “Dairy 3 for Me” selfie station. — Source: South Dakota Department of Agriculture

Peggy Besch started at the South Dakota State Fair in 2015 as the fair manager.
Norby Exhibit Hall we’ll have our work cutout for us, but because of Peggy’s experience, I know that she’ll work hard to make sure that exhibit hall is filled and has events filled in it.” Besch reflects that she learns something new everyday, and thinks she will feel that way for a long time. She also recalls some of her highlights of the past year. “It was kind of scary going into that first fair being so green to it and just coming away knowing that it was a great success. That was a highlight,” Besch said. Other highlights for her throughout the year included seeing improvements to the fairgrounds and the
construction of Norby Hall. As the 2016 South Dakota State Fair approaches, she wrestles with a myriad of emotions. “It’s stressful, but it’s fun. It’s exciting and it’s intense. We’re moving full speed. Gosh, it doesn’t feel like there is enough time in the day, especially as we get close to crunch time,” Besch said. “It’s fun to see all the parts come together.” The puzzle pieces of the fair as the event approaches include preparing the fairgrounds, opening and cleaning the buildings, coordinating exhibits, organizing entertainment and getting livestock areas ready. “It’s intense.” Besch said, “But it’s a good intense.”

Peggy Besch knew that her first year as the South Dakota State Fairground Manager was going to be challenging, and it did not fall short. “It’s been very exciting and definitely a challenge. I learn something new everyday. There’s a lot of moving parts and a lot of things to understand,” Besch said, “but it’s been a fun journey.” Prior to obtaining the State Fair position in February 2015, she had a background in special events, marketing and promotion. Besch also had connections across the state, and she knew a majority of the state fair staff. “Overall, I think from my perspective it’s been a smooth transition,” Besch said. Besch is described as a “breath of fresh air” by Candi Briley, South Dakota State Fair assistant manager. Briley said Besch is able to produce successful events and to recruit new events. She has shown this by booking the fairgrounds as the site for the 2018 and 2019 National Junior High Finals Rodeo. Besch has also been learning all of the different pieces that go into creating a statewide event. Over the past year, Besch has learned to understand livestock needs, state government, policies and procedures, logistics of concerts and managing major entertainers. The fairgrounds is also in the process of constructing the Norby Exhibit Hall. She said the project has been a challenge, but a learning experience as well. “She’s done really good for us,” Briley said. “I think with the addition for the
