SOUTH DAKOTA STATE FAIR 5

Grandstand celebrates 100 years with exciting lineup

By Abbie Lambert The Daily Republic Cheers to 100 years. The South Dakota State Fair grandstand is celebrating its century birthday in style with six nights of fun. With a mix of action and music entertainment, there is a something for everybody during the fair’s summer nights. “Ticket sales have been pretty strong, especially Toby Keith,” Fair Assistant Manager Candi Briley said. The South Dakota Fair committee works hard every year to bring exciting forms of entertainment to the grandstands for fairgoers to enjoy and this year is no exception. Wednesday and Thursday nights the Red Wilk Construction Tuff Hedeman Bull Bash runs the arena. Toby Keith kicks off the musical portion of entertainment on Friday night, followed by a performance from Foreigner on Saturday and Gary Allan on Sunday. The grandstand finishes its 100 year celebration on Monday

night with the “Thunder at the Fair” Outlaw Truck and Tractor Pull. Briley said the Fair expects to have a strong attendance at each night’s event and there are still tickets left for those who haven’t purchased. “This year we have a strong grandstand lineup,” Briley said. “We hope people enjoy the entertainment.” Tickets for grandstand entertainment can be purchased by calling (866) 605-3247, at the box office or through the State Fair website. Wednesday and Thursday The thrills and adrenaline rush of bull riding are back at the South Dakota State Fair with the Red Wilk Construction Tuff Hedeman Bull Bash. Tickets are $20 for adults or $12 for youth, 15 years or younger. Friday Toby Keith Should’ve Been A Cowboy Tour XXV tour will take the stage at the South Dakota State Fair. Country superstar Toby Keith draws more than a million fans

each year with hits like “Red Solo Cup” and “Beer for My Horses.” Hellraiser tickets are $25 and general admission seating is $55 a ticket. Grandstand reserved seating is $65 per seat and standing room is $75 per person. Chancey Williams and the Younger Brothers Band will open for Keith at 7 p.m. Saturday Spectators of Saturday’s grandstand act will jam with

one of the most popular rock bands in the world. Foreigner has 10 multi-platinum albums and in September 2017 was named to Business Insider Magazine’s Best Selling Music Artists of All Time. Tickets are $42 per person for standing room and $47 for grandstand reserved seating. The Night Ranger will open for the iconic rock band at 7 p.m. Sunday Country music star Gary

Allan will bring his signature blend of vocals and rebellious lyrics to the grandstand stage. Sawyer Brown opens at 7 p.m. Monday 250 vehicles will compete in 14 classes during the “Thunder at the Fair” Outlaw Truck and Tractor Pull. The event will begin at 1 p.m. and all tickets are general admission at $15 per adult and $8 for youth, 6 to 15 years of age.

New events added to Fair schedule

By Abbie Lambert The Daily Republic Carnival rides and the grandstand performances aren’t the only things to see and do at the 2018 South Dakota State Fair. Every year the South Dakota State Fair works to provide a wide range of other entertainment events and competitions that draw the interest of fairgoers. While many continue to draw crowds year after year, the fair committee still tries to incorporate new activities into the fair each year. Strolling through the fairgrounds, people might see a mysterious sight in the form of a man floating above the ground. Danny Wolverton, better known as Special Head, will be performing levitation acts each day during the

fair. Wolverton combines performance art and music with magic levitation to give jaw-dropping performances. “We’re excited to have him, and many might recognize him from his appearance on America’s Got Talent (season 8),” Fair Assistant Manager Candi Briley said. Wowing crowds throughout the fair with Wolverton will be an aerial assault trampoline show. The group of men, dressed in costumes, will perform four trampoline stunt shows during each fair day north of the AARP Centennial stage. Three new competitions will debut during the 2018 State Fair. The Women’s Building will hold the first-ever cake decorating contest to see which artist can best depict

the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the South Dakota State Fair Grandstand on a cake. “Hopefully there will be some pretty neat creations coming with that,” Briley said. In addition to the cake contest, pie makers are invited to compete in an open class homemade pie competition to see who in the state makes the best pie. Winners will be named in five divisions: fruit, cream, berry, mincemeat and nut. Back by popular demand, the Wine Pavilion will host a wine competition. This year another popular alcoholic beverage competition will make its way into the spotlight. “We’ve had a demand for doing a homemade beer competition, so that is being

added, along with the wine competition on Monday,” Briley said. Along with the new contests, popular events from past years will be a part of this year’s fair. The Pork Butt Battle and Jack’s Campers Chili Challenge will be back and provide free samples for those who participate in the people’s choice tasting. Crowd favorites such as the Classic Car Show and Parade, Strongest Man Competition, and the South Dakota State Fair’s version of American Idol, Dakota Star, will be back for the 2018 year. “We’ve got a great schedule events for this year’s 100th anniversary of the grandstand,” Briley said. “Hopefully people will enjoy the new additions.”

Events to look out for

SPECIAL HEAD: Levitation acts performed anywhere, anytime. AERIAL ASSAULT TRAMPOLINE SHOW: Performances at 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursday through Monday, north of AARP Centennial Stage. State Fair camping: A decades old tradition

By Abbie Lambert The Daily Republic For those who spend days at the South Dakota State Fair, it’s nice to have a place away from the hustle and bustle of the fair. Many find refuge in their home-away-fromhome in the form of a camper on one of the many camping sites found on and off the fairgrounds. Over 1900 campers are housed in nine different campgrounds that vary in location, size and amenities during the fair. The eight campgrounds located on the fairgrounds are in the highest demand. These “cream of the crop” locations have an extensive waiting list of more than 300 families. Families spend years waiting for a camping spot and then won’t move for decades. “A lot of our campsites have been the same people for literally generations,” South Dakota State Fairgrounds

Manager Peggy Besch said. “They park in goofy ways and create their own little cities amongst their campers.” The State Fair office doesn’t know which family has inhabited the same camping spot the longest, but Besch estimates it could easily be more than 25 years. “I’ve talked to people that were here when they were three, four years old, and now they are grandparents,” Besch said. Once a family gets a campsite it’s theirs every year, but if the family decides not to use it one year, the site is given to someone on the waiting list. Because of the high demand and length of wait for campsites, few cancellations happen each year, and the vacated places are quickly filled by individuals on the waiting list who are picked lottery style. “Once you get one (camping site) you won’t let it go, even if you can’t be here. You’ll

find someone to stay on it for you,” Besch said. The campground is open to all fairgoers, but the majority of campers consists of livestock and 4-H families due to the extensive number of hours they spend on the grounds competing. Most campers spend an average of seven days on the fairgrounds. Each on-grounds campground, whether it’s Buffalo Trails, Gopher Run, Honey Bee Lane, Pasque Park, Pheasant Park, Rushmore Court or Walleye Island, has its advantages. Besch says the best spot all depends on where the camper wants to spend the majority of their time. Generally campers spend a lot of time in the buildings near Third Street, making Pasque Park, Walleye Island, Honey Bee, Pheasant Park or Rushmore Court campgrounds the perfect locations. Others spend more time in the midway, riding carnival rides and attending performances

in the grandstand, which make Gopher Run or Buffalo Trails Campground the best place to set up. For those who wish to camp for just one night, the State Fair has two selfcontained and tent camping sites available for reservation off the fairgrounds at Gate H and Gate 13. Reservations for these sites should be made in advance after mid-April and are a first-come, first-served basis. “There is one lot that is daily camping. We always try to have spaces open for those folks who are just coming for the day,” Besch said. For the past 10 years, the State Fair challenges campers to decorate their campers and campsites to the theme of the fair. First place receives a paid campsite for the next year and second place receives two grandstand tickets to their choice of show during the next fair. A good portion of the campers pull out all the stops

in their attempt to be crowned the winners. “It’s a lot of fun. People like to drive through the campground just to look at the ones that are decorated,” Besch said. The cost of camping during the State Fair varies depending on campsite, its amenities, and length of stay, which can be up to $325. “Camping is a significant part of our revenue, but I think that it’s the experience and the comradery is why people like to camp out here during the fair,” Besch said. “That’s where memories are made.”
