2017 Teacher of the Year
Avon
Kris Cahoy
Title: Middle School/High School ELA teacher School: Avon School District Years of service to school: Two years Education: Avon High School, Mount Marty College, University of South Dakota Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? I am driven by the need to help others and my love of learning … I enjoy three things about teaching. First, I enjoy my work because of the students, every day is different and I get to see them mature from seventh graders to juniors. I enjoy learning something new every day, whether it is from those students or from a book. And I love reading great novels with my classes. Superintendent’s comment: “She has high expectations for the kids and does a great job of relating how reading and writing will have a positive impact on their lives,” said Avon School District Superintendent Tom Culver.

Greg Sherman
Title: 7-12 social studies teacher School: Colome Consolidated Years of service to school: 43 years Education: Clear Lake High School (now called Deuel), Dakota State University Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? The one thing that I’ve enjoyed the most about teaching is the daily interaction with students. Students are fun to interact with as they provide a daily challenge to myself and to every educator. I can honestly say that I’ve never had a boring day teaching as no two days of teaching are exactly alike. Teacherstudent interaction keeps me young, driven and excited to teach. Superintendent’s comment: “Greg Sherman is one of those teachers that every student wants to have. He brings the passion into his teaching and hold them accountable for their learning. The biggest thing is that he is consistent and genuinely cares. That goes a long way with students,” said Colome Consolidated School District Superintendent Ryan Orrock

2017 Teacher of the Year
Kristi Knox
Title: 7-12 FACS teacher and FCCLA adviser School: Canistota School District Years of service to school: Four years Education: Doland High School, South Dakota State University Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? I became a teacher because I had great examples of teachers growing up … The hardest part was choosing what I wanted to teach. I have always had a strong passion for Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) but loved working with young children, so I decided to double major in both. FACS was an easy choice as I had great examples of FACS teachers, like my mom and my high school FACS teacher, who showed me the great possibilities with FACS to prepare students for life. Superintendent’s comment: “Ms. Knox has a way of getting students to step out of their comfort zone, challenging them to experience new avenues. In the process, her students exercise real world skills such as communication and collaboration to tally hours of new experiences and volunteer activities that fill an impressive resume for a high school student,” said Canistota School District Superintendent Larry Nebelsick. Amy Donovan
Title: Ninth- and 10th-grade English teacher School: Chamberlain High School Years of service to school: 12 years Education: Geddes High School, Northern State University, Walden University Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? Making connections with the students is the best place to start. When I teach, I try to make a connection with the student and then connect the material to his/her life. Not all students love learning grammar and literature, so I try to add a little fun to the topic. I want the students to feel comfortable enough to participate in their learning. Superintendent’s comment: “Amy was selected because of her tireless energy to help make others better … Amy has a positive attitude toward whatever comes her way (extra students in a class, altering plans because of a snow-day or working on preparing documents for a school evaluation/review.) Others like to be around Amy; she sparks enthusiasm,” said Chamberlain School District Superintendent Debbie Johnson.

Title: First-grade teacher School: Wagner Community School Years of service to school: 14 years Education: Parkston High School, Dakota Wesleyan University Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? The students are the reason I enjoy teaching. I love to see the light bulb come on when they have made gains. Being able to watch their success in and out of the classroom setting is such a blessing. I love the hugs from the previous and past students. Mondays are the best day so I can hear about their weekend and look forward for the week together. Superintendent’s comment: “Pam is always above the line, full of energy, which is contagious. She establishes relationships with her students; they trust her and want to learn. Pam is a runner on our staff, consistently going above and beyond for the good of her students and school,” said Wagner Community School Superintendent Linda Foos.

Title: Third and fourth-grade teacher School: Dakota Christian School, Corsica Years of service to school: Five years Education: Todd County High School, Dordt College Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? There are many aspects of teaching I enjoy, from students’ creativity to overall academic success. That said, nothing gets my juices bubbling more than seeing a student get excited about what they are learning and seeing their eyes sparkle as their confidence soars. When they apply what they have learned to other aspects of their education, it is a gratifying experience. When they apply what they have learned to help others around them, my heart sings! Superintendent’s comment: “Camielle spends countless hours making her classroom the best it can be. She incorporates themes and activities to meet student needs and to engage them with multiple modes of learning,” said Dakota Christian School Superintendent Donald Mitchell.
Congratulations

Howard Alan Wiese
Title: Secondary teacher and head boys and girls golf coach School: Howard High School Years of service to school: 26 years Education: Howard High School, Dakota State University Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? I have always enjoyed learning and a career in education fit well with farming. The high school in every community is sort of the hub of the community and I enjoy being a part of that. And when a person has children that grow up and attend the same school that a person teaches at, you are on the same schedule they are. So then you can watch them mature and grow as students and young adults which was very enjoyable for me Superintendent’s comment: “Those who know Mr. Wiese know he has a great sense of humor and is always a joy to be around. Even if he’s not having a great day he never brings that attitude to the school because it can be contagious among students as can his great attitude. Additionally, he’s very congenial with the staff and students and has spent many afternoons helping students with math homework,” said Howard School District Superintendent Todd Lee. 001591904r1

Title: Third-grade teacher School: Jones County Elementary School Years of service to school: 19 years Education: White River High School, Black Hills State University Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? I wanted to become a teacher because at the time I was working as a paraprofessional and discovered I really enjoyed working/interacting with students. I felt I could contribute to their education as a teacher. I also come from a family of teachers. Superintendent’s comment: “Mrs. Drayer creates a classroom with a sense of community and belonging. Each student is aware that he or she is important and has an important job to do. She ensures every student understands key concepts,” said Jones County School Superintendent Lorrie Esmay.

Title: Third-grade teacher School: Wessington Springs Elementary School Years of service to school: 43 years Education: Wessington Springs High School, Northern State University, Huron College Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? I would say I’m from “the old school.” My classroom is usually structured and we expand on the basics. I’m a believer in having a phonics foundation to build strong readers. Learning the math facts is an import part of my math curriculum. We still have a lot of fun and projects to enhance our learning. Superintendent’s comment: “Mrs. Renee Hurley has served the Wessington Springs School District for 43 years. Her commitment and dedication to the school district has been extraordinary. She has positively impacted the lives of many in the school community. Renee is respected and admired by her students, parents, and colleagues over the years,” said Wessington Springs School District Superintendent Lance Witte.

Title: Sixth-grade teacher School: Plankinton School Years of service to school: Three years Education: Clearwater High School in Clearwater, Florida, St. Petersburg Junior College in Clearwater, Florida, University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? I wanted to become a teacher ever since I can remember. My grandma and my elementary teachers were powerful role models in my life. I have always felt that teaching is my passion and a career that I could excel in. Working with children is a privilege and a responsibility that I take seriously. I feel lucky to work in a profession that I love. Superintendent’s comment: “Her self motivation and constant critiquing of her methodology of teaching are her areas that set her apart from others. She loves teaching and this drives her to be better,” said Plankinton School Superintendent Steve Randall.
Congrats Sarah!

2017 Teacher of the Year
Sanborn Central
Brett Kroeger
Title: 5-12 instrumental music teacher School: Sanborn Central Years of service to school: Five years Education: Parkston High School, South Dakota State University, Northern State University. Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? I wanted to give students the same opportunities I was given when growing up. I also like the challenge of building up music programs and giving the students a voice in their own music program. I feel like this a bigger impact on their life when it comes to life outside of music … What I enjoy the most about teaching is when I am teaching a new concept and you can really tell that the students are getting it. Their eyes light up and they have an “ah-ha” moment. Superintendent’s comment: “Mr. Kroeger has time and time again displayed willingness to provide opportunities for students to achieve. He resurrected our band program as well as implemented and managed a successful winterguard program, which provides another opportunity for those students who may not quite fit the mold of a band student or other extra curricular activity member,” said Sanborn Central School District Superintendent Justin Siemsen. “FROM WHEELS TO FIELDS”

Jennifer Mudder
Title: Fifth-grade teacher School: Tyndall Elementary School Years of service to school: 20 years Education: Bon Homme High School, University of South Dakota Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? My grandpa always told me, “Get an education. It’s something no one can take from you.” I guess I took him literally and never left the classroom! Along with that, I had many good role models in my own school years that inspired me. My favorite teachers were those that made learning fun and interesting, and at the same time challenged my thinking. Superintendent’s comment: “Jennifer’s dynamism and enthusiasm are among the best within our faculty. She enjoys teaching, and has an aura of self-confidence that is hard to match. Again, she exudes personality, and it shows in her interactions with her students. She holds both herself, and her students, accountable for an outstanding educational environment — every day,” said Bon Homme School District Superintendent Mike Elsberry.

Jennifer Herrmann Title: Sixth-grade teacher School: John Paul II Elementary School, Mitchell Years of service to school: Nine years Education: Parkston High School, University of South Dakota and Dakota Wesleyan University Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? I feel like my teaching style is changing all the time. As a teacher, I’m constantly hearing and learning about new strategies to best reach kids. I’m always looking for new ways to help the students master the material in a creative, engaging and exciting way … I also feel it is so important to connect personally with my students and use those connections to teach them effectively and reach them at their level. Superintendent’s comment: “Jen never complains, is always willing to go the extra mile and treats each child as an individual no matter their academic level … I could also say she is constantly learning, she is patient, caring enthusiastic, but the most important word is genuine,” said John Paul II Elementary School Superintendent Robin Cahoy.
Congratulations
Thank you for being such a great teacher!
