2018 Teacher Of The Year

Mel Fathke

Title: Social Studies teacher School: Avon School District Years of service to school: 39 years Education(High School, College): Avon High School, University of South Dakota, Dakota State University, University of South Dakota at Springfield Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? I enjoy and have a passion for the teaching of our grassroots in the super state of South Dakota. The students should be proud of where they come from and that each one of us can make a huge difference. I love teaching and sharing our South Dakota state history. It is important to remember and learn from our grassroots, like our family and friends. It is important to make your local and state history come alive. It is important to believe in your personal own story and your special wall of fame. It is significant to know the history of our state of South Dakota. Always remember what others do for you and what you can do for others. I have posters hanging all over the history room with important quotes, sayings, and devoted messages. 001734552r1

Vicky Carda

Title: Tabor elementary Title I teacher/ interventionist School: Tabor Elementary, Bon Homme School District Years of service to school: 17 years Education(High School, College): Bon Homme High School, Mount Marty College Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? I became a teacher because I have always enjoyed working with young people. During high school, I babysat and during college, I worked at the daycare on campus. What I enjoy most about teaching is watching the students grow in their abilities. I don’t care how long it takes the students to grasp a certain concept, it’s the “aha” moment when their eyes light up and they say, “Mrs. Carda, I understand this!” That is what makes it all worthwhile. I enjoy helping all students succeed. Also, working alongside the staff at Bon Homme makes teaching enjoyable.

Chamberlain Debbie Swanson

Title: First-grade reading teacher School: Chamberlain Elementary Years of service to school: 25 years Education(High School, College): Chamberlain High School, Dakota Wesleyan University, Kindergarten MA curriculum and instruction at St. Scholastica, Duluth, Minnesota Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? I always wanted to be a teacher. I thought I wanted to be an interior decorator. I babysat a lot in high school and loved being with children. Then I took a nanny job in Minnesota working with a very special little boy and it was then that I decided I would enjoy being a teacher. I love children and that’s why I teach! It is extremely rewarding to watch children learn and grow! Everyone always asks, “which grade did you enjoy teaching the most?” I have loved all of them for different reasons. I have been teaching first-grade reading the last six years. Teaching first graders to read has been extremely rewarding, but also very challenging at times. Some children catch on quickly and others struggle.

2018 Teacher Of The Year

Corsica-Stickney Lorisa Broughton

Title: K-6 special education School: Corsica-Stickney Years of service to school: 23 years Education (High School, College): Corsica High School, Dakota Wesleyan University Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? Education has always been important to me. Learning and experiencing new things is a great way to grow as an individual. Helping others to enjoy learning and exploring everything that is out there seemed like a good career fit for me. What I enjoy most about teaching is that no day is the same as the next. Every day I learn something new from my students or they inspire me to learn or research something new. Teaching has allowed me the ultimate joy of watching a child as they have that “light bulb” moment or as they reach a goal that they have worked hard on.

Howard Stacy Wingen

Title: K-6 special education School: Howard Elementary School Years of service to school: 36 years Education (High School, College): Canova High School, Northern State University Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? I remember since third grade that I always wanted to be a teacher. I loved being around kids, from babysitting to helping with Vacation Bible School after I was too old to go myself. My decision on a career never changed. Teaching young children is the best job ever. Teaching the basics in reading, writing and math is so fun for me. The children are eager to learn and think that I know so much! (I do know a lot in the kindergarten curriculum.) I love getting hugs and smiles each day and watching how excited the kids get when they understand something. It is fun to see where we start in the fall and how much they have grown and changed at the end of the school year. I wouldn’t trade my job with anyone!

Title: Second-grade teacher School: Jones County Elementary Years of service to school: 3 years Education (High School, College): I attended Hartington High School in Hartington, Nebraska and Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? I wanted to be a teacher since I was a kid. My mom was a teacher growing up and I saw all of the fun things that she could pass on to kids and how interested they were in what she was teaching, so that inspired me to inspire others. I love seeing how much the students grow from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. I love helping kids reach their full potential, even if they didn’t believe they could.

Lyman Callie Hills

Title: Middle school reading teacher School: Lyman Middle School Years of service to school: I started teaching in Lyman the 2006/2007 school year Education (High School,College): I graduated from Lyman High School in 2000, from BHSU in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science in education, and in 2011, I graduated from USF with a master’s degree as a reading specialist Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? I became a teacher because of my second-grade teacher, Susan Taylor. I wanted to make a difference in the life of a child the way she did to mine and so many others. She taught me that working hard in school, being kind always, and having fun were the keys to being happy in life and with your career. I enjoy the conversations I get to have with my students. I enjoy watching them grow, learn, be successful in school and in extracurricular activities. Having a student come in before school, or catching me between classes, and telling me about something positive that has happened in their life makes my heart happy. I love the relationships that I’ve built with my students. Teaching and reading with them about real-life situations, seeing them connect with the material, allowing them to add their own unique, personal touches to their projects makes each day interesting! 001734991r1

Title: High school Spanish II teacher, English as a Second Language School: Plankinton School Years of service to school: 10 years Education (High School,College): Fundação Bradesco in São Paulo state, Brazil, FIEO and UNIP in São Paulo state, Brazil, Metropolitan Community College, Johnson County Community College, University of South Dakota, Dakota Wesleyan University Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? I became a teacher because I fell in love with education when I came to work first as a bilingual paraprofessional at the Plankinton School. Inside the classrooms, I experienced the dedicated work and care that pours out of amazing professionals at every minute of the day, and how children respond to that. The rewarding feeling of participating in the process of enriching someone’s life through education was enough to make every single minute of my day meaningful. What I enjoy most about teaching is the unique connection between teacher and students. I enjoy listening to them, and the exchange of experience and knowledge between us is so unique and fulfilling.

Platte-Geddes Sandy Du Frain

Title: Second-grade teacher School: Platte-Geddes Elementary Years of service to school: 5 years Education (High School,College): I graduated from Geddes High School. My undergraduate degree was with the University of South Dakota and my master’s degree was with Walden University Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? I decided I wanted to become a teacher because I couldn’t think of another occupation I wanted to do more than teaching. I honestly feel like I get the “best group of kids” every year. I get to stand up, in front of our next generation, and influence and enlighten them. After all, some of them will be our leaders, entrepreneurs, or our next-door neighbors. Whatever they choose, I know that I helped mold them. I get to mold through hands-on, reallife experiences. I get to sing, dance, model, entertain, learn, create, influence, advise, watch kids discover, and so much more. It doesn’t get any better than that.

Title: K-12 general music/vocal play/musical director School: Wessington Springs School District Years of service to school: 20 years Education (High School,College): Auburn High School in Washington State, Central Washington University, Washington State Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? I became a teacher because I enjoy working with children and sharing my passion of music. Teaching has given me the ability to connect with students on many levels. Recently, I directed the play “The Bullying Collection,” and had my students perform for our student body and community. Our goal was to teach the negative impact of bullying. This was a great learning experience for all involved. I have also had the opportunity to get 25 ukuleles donated through DonorsChoose.org, and will be adding ukuleles to my sixth-grade curriculum this next school year.

Mitchell -- John Paul II Megan Rokusek Title: Preschool teacher School: John Paul II Years of service to school: 12 years Education (High School,College): Mitchell High School, Dakota Wesleyan University, University of South Dakota Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? My love for teaching started when I was in elementary school. I had some wonderful teachers that truly made a great impact on my life and inspired me to follow in their footsteps. I wanted to work with children and make that same impact as I had from them. I wanted to help children to love learning and to make a difference in their lives. The most rewarding part of teaching is the kids! Their laughter and smiles make coming to work every day worth it. I love seeing how much the students have grown throughout the year and the moments when they finally get it! I enjoy making learning fun and trying new things to reach each child in my class.

2018 Teacher Of The Year

Mitchell -- Gertie Belle Rogers Elementary Sarah Timmer

Title: Third-grade teacher School: Gertie Belle Rogers Years of service to school: 4 years Education (High School, College): Tri-Valley High School, University of Sioux Falls, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? The reason I became a teacher is simple -- I love all children! My goal is to help each student reach their full potential. It is very rewarding to help students discover their love for learning and watch students grow. I enjoy teaching knowledge standards, but I also take pleasure in teaching children how to collaborate and work with others. This involves teaching students how to listen to others with the intent to understand, problem solve, and how to clarify and articulate a plan or idea. I also take joy in helping students discover how to celebrate learning from their mistakes, and the importance of enjoying and persevering through challenging tasks. These skills will help them to become positive members of society.

Congratulations Sarah!

Mitchell -- L.B. Williams Elementary Chad Lentsch Title: Fifth-grade teacher School: L.B. Williams Elementary Years of service to school: 3 years Education (High School,College): Madison High School, University of South Dakota Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? This is my opportunity to once again reaffirm to my students that I care about them, and that I am here to make a positive difference in their lives. Aristotle was on point when he stated: “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” Making a positive difference continues throughout the day in Room 409 in everything we do. Our class mottos are reaffirmed each day: “Be kind, work hard and learn.” We then talk about making it a good day. In Room 409, we don’t just have good days, we make good days. In order to make good days, I afford learning opportunities to my students that provide meaning and memories. When a student is provided with a memorable experience, then the goal of “learn” is attained in one lifelong memory.

Mitchell Middle School Darci Winthers

Title: Special education teacher School: Mitchell Middle School Years of service to school: 25 years Education (High School,College): Mitchell High School, University of South Dakota, Northern State University Why did you become a teacher, and what do you enjoy about teaching? From a very young age, I decided to follow in my father’s and grandmother’s footsteps to become a third-generation teacher. I believe every child has potential, unique gifts, and talents, even those with learning disabilities. A teacher makes a positive impact and leaves a lifelong impression on students. This belief underlies my commitment to teaching and sets my goals for students when they enter and leave my classroom. Modeling patience and understanding are of high importance to me. I want my students to develop determination and perseverance, and I want to instill in them a good work ethic that will carry them toward a successful future. Each day I enjoy watching and helping students achieve their goals and making a positive impact.
