WHAT IS THE MITCHELL UNITED WAY? The Mitchell United Way may mean different things to different people. To some it means food and shelter. To others it means hope. However, if you ask most people they will reply that the Mitchell United Way means help. Help from an independent, local non-profit organization that is designed to meet our own community’s Human Service needs. It is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of community minded men and women who determine policies and maintain a program that is beneficial to the entire community. Through a volunteer system the United Way brings together business, government, organizations, employees and dedicated individuals for a united approach to solve local needs. During the fall months of each year a Campaign is conducted through volunteers who help raise the funds that are required to assist 31 local organizations or agencies in fulfilling the basic needs of those who are less fortunate and who are experiencing misfortune and hardship. Funds from the Campaign are distributed to member agencies throughout the following year.
American Red Cross - The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and funded by donors, provides relief to victims of disasters and helps communities prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Big Friend Little Friend Provides at-risk youth and young moms with an adult mentor, who serves as a friend, role model and support for the child or young mom. Through these one-on-one relationships the Little Friend gains selfconfidence, attains better grades in school and has improved relationships with family and friends. Our goal is to inspire hope and change lives. Boy Scouts of Sioux Council - Scouting offers age-tailored, family based activities for boys ages 7-20 through Cub Scouting and Boy Scouting and young men and women ages 14-20 through its Venturing program. Cornerstones CLC, Inc. - Cornerstones Career Learning Center provides education and workplace training for Mitchell area employers and job seekers through basic skill classes, GED preparation and testing, National Career Readiness Certificate skill development and testing, computer instruction, and short-term industry training.

Helping Hand Pantry - This agency supports those in need of personal hygiene and cleaning supplies, which are items that food stamps cannot purchase. It is an all-volunteer organization. Helping with Horsepower: SpiritHorse Program The mission of the HWH SpiritHorse Program is to assist individuals with special needs in reaching their full potential through interaction with horses. Through an amazing partnership with Reclamation-Ranch and Life’s Trail, clients come for one-hour sessions each week, with a designated horse and instructor. We have a strong focus on building independence, and clients assist, to the best of their ability, in all areas of preparation and horse-care: leading, grooming, putting on and removing equipment before and after their ride. This develops a sense of self-sufficiency and accomplishment, and also builds sequencing and speech skills. Independent Living Choices - “We provide services to people with disabilities who make independence their choice.” Services may include personal care, advocacy, information and referral, summer transition, peer support, and independent living skills training. United Way funding is used to provide safe home modification and adaptive devices.

Chairman Message
For many of us, life is quite confortable, and fairly uneventful. In our daily lives, it can be difficult to identify with coworkers, team members, friends and neighbors who might be struggling. They can be struggling to make ends meet, struggling in abusive relationships, stuggling with addictions, or just struggling to “catch a break”. You have a great way to help those who are fighting unseen battles: Mitchell Area United Way. You, the supporters of the Mitchell Area United Way, through the services of our many partner agencies, are the faces of change. We are STRONGER UNITED! Sincerely,
Pam Olinger 2019/2020 Campaign Chairman
