Saying ‘I do’ in a picture perfect setting
February 2019
By Sheila Slater The Daily Republic Enchanted islands, tropical beaches and far away destinations. The destination wedding industry is seeing a rising trend for couples opting to tie the knot at exotic locations with multi-day programs, lavish settings at luxurious properties, or looking to book unique events that can only be enjoyed in the chosen destinations. Some picks include tequila tastings in Cabo San Lucas, a sunset champagne catamaran excursion in the Caribbean or even taking part in a group cleansing by a shaman. The possibilities have no boundaries. For Timmi Grablander and Makel Juarez of Mitchell, travelling the world to distant places has always been a passion that unites them. Turning a birthday trip for Grablander and Juarez into the day of their dreams, while visiting the romantic and picturesque Greek island of Santorini, seemed natural.

“It’s your special day,” Grablander said. “So why not make your dreams come true.” The couple of seven years had packed their birth certificates along with their passports to board a plane towards a new chapter in their lives. “Timmi had dreamed about this location for many years and we were finally able to go,” Juarez said. “Once we decided we are going to Santorini, one of the prettiest places on this planet, we figured, why not get married.” The couple decided to make their special day private and personal while vacationing for two weeks on the island, nestled in the southern part of the Aegean Sea. With that decision, they said they left behind the worries about inviting a big wedding party. “What really mattered was the two of us and this beautiful destination,” Juarez said. Imerovigli is a village on the island of Santorini, about 200 miles south of Greece’s mainland, and is the largest island of a former volcanic caldera. It’s mostly famous for
its breathtaking sunsets with the suitable nickname “balcony to the Aegean.” “It’s beautiful but it did turn out to be a little bit last-minute, although we had talked and planned before the trip,” Juarez said. “In the end, it all worked out. The mayor of one of the villages married us and it was just as formal as any other ceremony could be.” The journey for a lifetime started for Alysia Tegethoff and Marty Plambeck in the Black Hills in South Dakota during a hike up to Black Elk Peak, formerly known as Harney Peak. The outdoor enthusiasts met seven years ago and enjoy spending their weekends and free time hiking, kayaking and biking as a couple or with friends. Last fall, the lovebirds headed west to Deadwood to celebrate Tegethoff’s birthday on Sept. 22. After getting ready for a night out, Plambeck suggested they make their way up Black Elk Peak (formerly Harney Peak) to take a sunset picture before going out for dinner.

“When we reached the trail, Marty suddenly started speeding up and jogging up the hill,” Tegethoff said. “I was freezing and thinking ‘All this for a picture’.” Plambeck had already reached the peak and started positioning the camera when Tegethoff caught up with him. Plambeck hugged the love of his life while posing towards the camera, when he suddenly got on one knee and proposed. “It was surreal,” Tegethoff said. “It was so out of character for Marty. He is not one to make big announcements on birthdays or holidays. I was very surprised.” The Mitchell couple plans to tie the knot in a warmer climate, with their vows planned for Jan. 24, 2020 in Montego Bay, Jamaica. “Getting married on the beach was always something I wanted to do,” Tegethoff said. “When he actually proposed, I knew right then: I’m planning that dream wedding.” Tegethoff is working with a professional travel agent to help her with the planning and decision-making process step-by-step. “I would still be scrolling through
pages of resorts if I did not have somebody on my side to guide me through this,” Tegethoff said. “She really wanted to get to know us and our likes.” For Tegethoff, this will be her first international trip and she is excited to join in with her family and friends for a special vacation. “It’s just great to be able to say, ‘Yes we have been there, we got married in Jamaica,’ and that was a huge factor in deciding for a destination wedding,” Tegethoff said. According to survey research by the popular wedding website The Knot, the average cost of an international or destination wedding came in at $25,800, while domestic weddings can average $27,840. But there’s a number of factors that can affect those costs, as well. The most important thing for both couples was, and is, making lifelong, lasting memories of the first day in the first chapter of their new lives, something they hope to never forget. “Being able to show Alysia the island in this beautiful tropical setting will be amazing,” Plambeck said. “It’s a timewarp kind of thing and I am excited to make it special for everybody.”

Brides and grooms understandably feel a little stress when planning their weddings. Adding to the pressure is the fact that, according to a WeddingWire.com report, the average couple in their 30s spends $32,000 on their wedding. That is a lot of money riding on one day. But planning a wedding can be even more fun than it is stressful, especially for those couples who employ a few tricks of the wedding planning trade.
Sixteen sweet wedding tips and tricks
1. Use labels. Once the guest list is finalized, create a database of guests’ addresses. Print out two sets of labels: One for addressing the invitations and the other to address the thank-you cards. 2. RSVP tricks: Number the back of RSVP cards and correspond the numbers to the guest list. If one or more responses is illegible, refer to the number to figure it out. 3. Create an email address. To have all of the wedding-related details in one place, create a separate email address exclusively for wedding correspondence. 4. Use veil weights. These weights can be sewn into
veils to prevent fly-aways during outdoor ceremonies or photoshoots. 5. Keep bugs at bay. Spray chair and reception table legs with insect repellent. Dryer sheets also can be tucked into inconspicuous spots to keep bugs away. 6. Use page markers for seating. Use multicolored, self-sticking page markers to create easy seating arrangements. Each color can represent a category: His, Hers, Friends, Work. 7. Make a photo clothesline. A clever and inexpensive idea is to pin photos of the couple to a string, cataloging how they met and their time together leading up to the wedding. 8. Use loose flower centerpieces. Loose flowers in a vase are easier to sort and transport home for guests who want a memento. Make precut butcher’s paper or cellophane available to make bouquets. 9. Stock up on string lights. Lights can be wrapped around trees outdoors, strung indoors around windows or draped along tables to create a romantic ambiance.
10. Be present. A nd take mental snapshots throughout the day, focusing on specific details. Share them with each other at the end of the evening.
11. Create wedding programs that double as fans for a hot summer ceremony, just print on heavier paper and affix a handle.
12. Get your guests excited about the wedding dance by asking for song requests in the wedding RSVP.
13. Wear a button up dress shirt while getting your hair styled. That way it is easy to change out of and you won’t put a strand of hair out of place. 14. Keep your children guests entertained during the reception by providing wedding themed coloring books.
15. Provide a fun selfie-station by creating a beautiful backdrop.
16. Remember that no wedding is perfect, expect some things to go wrong and enjoy every moment that goes right.

Popular destination wedding locales Couples are increasingly tying the knot in exotic locales. According to The Knot 2017 Real Weddings Study, a survey of nearly 13,000 U.S. brides and grooms who married in 2017, 25 percent of weddings were destination weddings. While the survey did not ask participants who opted for destination weddings where they got hitched, The Knot notes that the following locales are some stunning places for couples to say their “I dos.”

Factors to consider before including Fido in your wedding Pets are full-fledged members of many families and even, apparently, families-tobe. In its 2016 American W e d d i n g Study, Brides magazine found that 8 percent of wedding ceremonies included pets. While the couples of yesteryear might have left Fido at home, many of today’s couples want their four-legged friends to be there on their big day. Though no studies to date have examined which animals are most likely to make an appearance at couples’ nuptials, it’s fair to assume that dogs, which tend to get out of the house more than most other types of pets, are the most common furry bridesmaids, groomsmen or ring bearers. Before including dogs in their wedding plans, couples may want to consider a few factors to
ensure asking Fido to be there come the big day is what’s best for couples, their guests and, of course, their beloved pooches. Eligibility Some venues do not allow pets that are not documented assistance animals on the premises. Confirm a venue’s pet policy before purchasing any wedding day attire for your dog. Couples who are intent on including their pets in their wedding ceremonies should only consider pet-friendly facilities, which may be hard to find. Couples who plan to take a limousine to and from their wedding also should confirm that the cars allow pets before booking. Personality No two dogs are the same. Some dogs might love people and attention, while others might prefer one-on-one time with their owners. Dogs that are sociable and unaggressive may make perfect additions to wedding ceremonies, while animals that exhibit anxiety around strangers or seem uncomfortable in noisy settings should be kept out of the ceremony. Health Dog owners also must consider their pets’ health

when deciding whether or not to include them in the wedding ceremony. Couples who bonded over a love of their dog may really hope to include their furry friend in the festivities, but should not do so at the expense of the animal’s health. Outdoor wedding ceremonies under sunny skies may produce potentially unhealthy conditions for certain breeds or older dogs. Dogs that have difficulty getting around may need a red wagon (and attendant) to make the rounds at the wedding. Assistance Couples will be busy on their wedding days, so they may need to arrange for a caretaker to look after their dog during and after the ceremony. Asking a guest or guests to play this role may be asking too much, as guests will no doubt want to celebrate without having to take care of a dog. A professional pet sitter might work, but that can be costly, as couples must pay for the sitter and will likely need to pay for the sitter to have a seat and a meal during the reception. Dogs can make great additions to weddings, but couples must consider a host of factors before deciding to have Fido join them as they tie the knot.

When saying ‘I do’ means a move: 5 tips for combining households Getting married means a whole lot of changes, not the least of which could be moving to a new house or apartment. Whether you’re getting a brand-new place for the both of you or one of you is shifting all your earthly possessions to join your spouse, it’s a good idea to take proactive steps to make crossing that new threshold a little easier. Here are a few tips for taking some of the stress out of moving day — for both of you. • Declutter. Before moving, go through your possessions, as individuals and then as a team. Even if you’re moving to a larger space, it’s better to start fresh with items you know you like or need, and it will save you moving things you don’t really want to keep. After you’ve each discarded old, unused or disliked items, take inventory of common household items to see if you have duplicates. Do you both have toasters, blenders, a full set
of silverware? Decide as a team which of them you prefer. If the other is still in good shape, donate, recycle, or if too old and damaged, discard. • Plan ahead to save. Whether one of you is moving or you both are, you can save a lot of money by doing the move yourself. It’s remarkably easy to rent a truck, and you don’t need a commercial license. Driving a moving truck isn’t difficult, but it is different from driving a car. Be careful to use your mirrors to navigate turns, avoid sudden lane changes or stops and make sure to allow extra time. Plan ahead by reserving your truck at least two weeks in advance. • Pack smart. Nothing hurts more than moving your prized possessions, only to find them damaged when you arrive at your new digs. Your best bet is to pick

up sturdy boxes, strong tape and bubble wrap at your truck rental store so that you know everything you pack will arrive at your new home in the same condition as when you packed it. You can also get labels to use on your boxes so you know which items belong in the kitchen, the bathroom or the bedroom. • Be space conscious. You’ll need about 150 cubic feet of space for the furnishings of each room in your current home. In other words, a 12-or 16- foot Penske rental truck should accommodate the contents of most small apartments or condos. When loading a moving truck, do what the pros do. Heavier items should be loaded in the back of the truck, while lighter items should be placed in front and on top. When in doubt, follow the helpful tips offered by Penske’s Truck Wizard.
• Share the burden. Invite friends, family and members of your wedding party to help you move — but be sure to make it a party! Ordering plenty of pizza and drinks for the post-move party will be a big hit. Perhaps you could pick out special items or photos as mementos of your friendships or family events during your decluttering to gift your moving helpers.
These tips will help you and your new spouse handle the big movein gracefully, economically and efficiently, so you can start your life together with as little stress as possible. Congratulations on the big day and the big move! To learn more about renting your own moving truck, check out PenskeTruckRental.com for details. You can save even more on the move if you qualify for AAA or military discounts at Penske, so be sure to ask.

Navigating weddings with nontraditional families potential areas of conflict. For example, mothers might be hurt if their ex-husbands’ new girlfriends are asked to be in a group family photo. Instead, select separate times to have everyone included. • Remember to give parents and stepparents priority seating as well, and they each should be seated next to someone they love and someone with whom they can converse comfortably. You may think everyone can play nice, but it’s best not to push the issue just to make a point at the wedding.
• Consider stepparents and stepsiblings VIPs. Brides and grooms who are not particularly close to their stepfamilies still have to recognize the role they play in the family dynamics. These people are still family, so respect and courtesy should be offered. If there is any lingering animosity, extend the olive branch on this day and try not to let anyone be made to feel as if they are unimportant. A simple announcement of who stepparents are at the wedding reception or inclusion of their names on wedding itineraries can help smooth over any potential bumps.
• Recognize that some families break the mold. Recently, a father made waves on the Internet when a video of him pulling the bride’s stepfather up to assist in walking her down the aisle went viral. This was a wonderful image of families making it work despite their differences or the awkwardness that can result when brides or grooms have parents and stepparents in attendance. Although this scenario might not play out for all, find ways to impart a special touch, especially if you’re close to both your biological parents and your stepparents. For example, your biological father may walk you down the aisle, while your stepfather may enjoy the first dance.
• Put others’ needs before your own. While the wedding may be about you and your future spouse, you must consider the feelings of others. Biological parents and stepparents may act defensively if they feel uncomfortable or hurt, and that can create an air of negativity to the day. Try to avoid this by considering
• Order flowers and gifts for all. Purchase flowers and wedding party gifts for all of the special people in your lives, including your stepfamily. Weddings can be complicated affairs when factoring in blended families. With patience and compassion, such families can enjoy a beautiful and happy day.

Families come in all shapes and sizes. During special events particularly those steeped in tradition, such as weddings - blended families may have to employ certain tactics to ensure the events go off without a hitch. When planning their weddings, couples must give consideration to the needs of their families. Even though a wedding is about the union of two people, oftentimes couples engaged to be married must contend with the politics of divorce or other familial issues. This includes if and how to incorporate stepparents and stepsiblings into the ceremony and celebration. There are no traditional rules regarding how to handle blended families, so brides- and groomsto-be can customize their decisions based on their own unique situations. Even when families have been happy through the years, the unique circumstances and traditions surrounding the nuptials can dredge up former insecurities, and certain aspects may require extra patience and tact. Here’s how to navigate the process.

A wedding day shaving guide for grooms
Winter Wedding Guide 11
Grooms are often content to let their brides-to-be shine on their wedding day. But weddings are a showcase of the two people getting married and grooms matter! Grooms
can take steps to look handsome and polished, but may wonder what they can do to put their best feet forward when all eyes and cameras are facing their way. Addressing skin care and proper shaving techniques is essential. Although shaving is a seemingly simple task, some men struggle through the process because they haven’t mastered the basics for a clean, comfortable shave. Grooms who do not already have beards should be clean shaven for their wedding days. Brickell Men’s Products advises that the first step to a good shave is to shower before shaving. The warm water and steam will open up pores and follicles, allowing the hair to protrude as much as possible out of the skin. The more it sticks out, the cleaner the shave will be. Many men fail to prep their skin before shaving. It is important to rinse the face with a pre-shave soap and warm water to remove excess oil and dead skin that clogs razor blades. Try a non-lathering or natural
shave cream that does not contain the potentially irritating chemicals that create the lathering effect, but will still offer lubrication to help get a closer shave. The right razor can make all the difference. While an electric shaver can serve in a pinch, come the day of the wedding, work with a traditional razor, either disposable or cartridge style. Start with a fresh, new and sharp blade so it is effective. Some men prefer a single blade for a close shave, while others like razors with multiple blades. Grooms should use what has worked for them in the past, as now is not the time to experiment. While shaving, go with and against the grain, or what feels comfortable to take off the hair without having to go over areas repeatedly and risk irritating the skin. Gillette advises rinsing blades often during shaving. However, do not tap the razor against the sink to dislodge the whiskers, as this can damage or dull the razor. Finish up by rinsing with cool water and applying a moisturizer or specially designed aftershave product. It can take up to 48 hours for skin to heal after a shave and keeping it hydrated can diminish irritation.
