INSPIRATION BOARDS BRING WEDDING PLANS TO LIFE Making the wedding of your dreams a reality may require some creativity. It can be challenging to organize all of the creative ideas swimming around in your head, but inspiration boards may be able to help. Inspiration boards, sometimes referred to as idea boards, are commonly used by interior designers, artists, writers, and even wedding planners. Such boards can serve a great purpose when starting a new project, especially if all of your creative ideas seem to lack cohesion. Sometimes seeing things together, rather than in bits and pieces on their own, can fuel even more creativity. Inspiration boards can include magazine clippings, photographs, fabric swatches, quotes or literary passages, and color swatches. As the idea board grows, you may find a common denominator among your inspirational elements. This can help determine a theme for your wedding or jump-start other planning. While poster boards may be more traditional idea boards, creative ideas

also can be compiled in binders or scrapbooks, which work especially well at keeping all items organized and concise. Plus, they’re portable, which means you can take a scrapbook to a meeting with a wedding vendor and show him or her your concepts for the wedding. Later, when photographers, florists and other vendors have been booked, you can attach receipts or agreements to the inspiration board for future reference. This keeps all of your important wedding information in one place rather than requiring you to search through different folders or files for important documents. In addition, if friends or family members ask for advice on vendors and planning their own weddings in the future, you can readily access your inspiration board.

Inspiration boards.................................................3

Remember, inspiration may not always come from bridal-related resources. Anything you come across in your daily life - such as window-shopping at a furniture store or passing an art exhibit - may inspire some creativity. Inspiration boards are used by top design professionals and can be a handy resource for couples planning their weddings.

Post-wedding day tasks to tackle Couples who plan their own weddings might enjoy a satisfactory exhale once the knot has been tied and the last rug has been cut. Once guests head home and couples depart for their honeymoons, much of the work is done. But there are some lingering tasks for couples once they return from their first trip together as husband and wife. • Thank-you notes: Thank-you notes are perhaps a couple’s biggest task upon returning from their honeymoons. Such notes should be sent to all guests who attended your wedding as well as those who could not attend but still gave gifts. Carve out some time in the weeks immediately following your honeymoon to write personalized thank-you notes, mailing them all at the same time so guests do not feel slighted if their note

arrives weeks after another’s. • Cake: If you were unable to do so before leaving on your honeymoon, return to your wedding reception venue to pick up any leftover cake. Many venues will store leftover wedding cakes in their freezers for a reasonable amount of time until couples return from their honeymoons, but make it a point to pick up your cake as soon as possible. It’s customary to eat leftover cake, if you have any, on your first anniversary. • Vendor reviews: Many vendors now rely on Internet reviews from past customers to help grow their businesses, and it’s a nice gesture for couples to offer their reviews once they have returned from their honeymoons. Chances are you relied on such reviews when choosing vendors for your wedding, so return the favor by writing reviews and helping future couples find reliable vendors who can help make their weddings special.

• Dress: New brides who want to keep their dresses as keepsakes or preserve them as heirlooms should have their dresses cleaned and professionally preserved when they return from their honeymoons. The earlier you do this, the easier it is to remove any stains that might have developed during your wedding. • Gift returns: Newly married couples often receive repeat gifts or gifts they never put on their registries that they simply have no use for. Return such gifts as soon as possible so your home is not overwhelmed with clutter. Upon returning gifts, you also can do a little shopping, as you will have money to spend. In addition, many stores give newly married couples discounts on registry items that went unpurchased, and the day you return gifts is a great opportunity to cash in on such discounts. – Source: Metro Creative

Summer Wedding Guide 5

June 2018

Overcome wedding weather obstacles Summer approaches with the promise of warm temperatures. Weather is one reason summer is such a popular season to tie the knot. But just because sunny skies and rising mercury are par for the course, that does not mean Mother Nature won’t invite herself to the festivities and attempt to upstage happy couples in the process. Some feel it’s good luck for couples to get rain on their wedding days, but many couples would trade in a little of that luck for clear skies. However, weather can be fickle, and couples who build contingency plans into their wedding festivities are much more likely to overcome inclement weather than couples without such plans.

• Have solutions for sun and heat. Couples don’t want their wedding guests or bridal party members passing out due to heat exhaustion. Make sure to offer shade if the ceremony or reception is outside. Stock the area with cold bottles of water or a chilled lemonade stand. Have

fans and umbrellas available just in case guests need a way to protect themselves from the sun.

• Strong storms.

Over the course of hot and humid days, storm clouds can develop and roll in. Afternoon thunderstorms are quite common on summer days. Accommodate for sudden downpours by hosting early luncheon receptions or ensure there is a plan B that includes a covered area. Couples can stash spare shoes or even rain slickers in a car to keep their wedding attire protected against rain as they dash between venues or take photos.

• Embrace the rain. Vivid skies with lightning or overcast days can make for unique and striking wedding photography. Couples needn’t look at the downside of rain, but rather they should see the opportunities for one-of-a-kind memories. • Keep a generator on standby. Storms may knock out power. facilities may have their own backup power, but be sure to address how power outages are handled. If need be, bring in a portable generator to keep the reception room cooled by fans.

• Plan for wind.

Coastal outdoor weddings present beautiful backdrops for weddings. But being near the shore may mean accepting windy conditions. Tie down tents and use weights to keep wedding programs or other papers from catching a current. The bride and her wedding party should opt for free-flowing tresses so they needn’t worry about intricate updos coming undone.

• Maintain a sense of humor. It’s impossible to predict wedding day weather, but staying calm, going with the flow and laughing at things they can’t control can help couples make memories that last a lifetime. – Source: Metro Creative

ANNIVERSARY SALE June 11th-July 6th UP TO 50% OFF JEWELRY CLOSE-OUTS!

Floral artist for Cherrybee’s, Dick Anderson, sits at the consulting table on June 4. (Abbie Lambert / Republic) PERFECT, continued from page 6 From there, floral arrangements can be created by adding complementary colors.

Reserving a date

It is important that brides make floral reservations six months to one year before the wedding day. Dick Anderson, a floral artist at Mitchell’s Cherrybee’s Floral & Gifts, recommends brides call early to reserve a date as the floral shop only takes on so many weddings each weekend in order to give each event the time it deserves. Renee Polreis, a floral artist at Mitchell’s Nepstad’s Flowers & Gifts, said brides usually call and reserve their wedding date early on and then meet with her four to six months before their wedding day to pick out arrangements.

Conveying the vision

Understanding the bride’s vision for her wedding is the most crucial part to creating perfect floral designs. “You’ve got to get into the bride’s vision,” Anderson said. He recommends brides get ideas of what they do and don’t like from their friends’ weddings, magazines or Pinterest. “Having a bride come in and say, ‘I don’t like this,’ or, ‘I really liked this,’ is really helpful in creating the perfect design,” he explained.

Sites like Pinterest are extremely useful tools for florists when it comes to understanding a bride’s personality and style. Polreis said she loves when brides show their Pinterest wedding boards to her. “I’ve learned to embrace Pinterest,” she said. “Brides show me their board that they’ve pinned everything on and the overall look jumps out.”

Popular colors and arrangements

Recent popular main colors have included both light and dark colors including burgundy, navy and blush tones. Many brides are picking a bold, deep color and matching it with a light color to create contrast. Greens, gold, silver, and mixed metals are often chosen as complimentary colors. The big and loose look is coming in to style, especially when it comes to the bride’s bouquet. Anderson was asked to create a bouquet that looked like he threw the flowers in the air and caught them. The loose-tied and cascading bouquets have become increasingly popular. So has the trend of mixing permanent silk flowers in with real ones. See PERFECT, Page 9

“With a good quality silk flower, no one can tell the difference,” Polreis said. Both artists agree silk is a good alternative to more expensive and high-maintenance real flowers. Painting a flower is another option to create a custom designed look. Many colors like teal are not found readily in nature. To solve that, florists are now able to paint flowers an array of different colors. This ability opens the door to new possibilities for brides and puts them one step closer to the perfect arrangement. As a bride pieces together her perfect wedding day, flowers are one of the key pieces that displays the characteristics and style of the couple and ultimately completes the puzzle. It’s important to rely on and trust the experts to design the perfect bouquet for the perfect day.

Lose some stress by saying ‘yes’ to a decorator Local event decorators help brides’ visions become reality By Abbie Lambert The Daily Republic Decorating for a wedding can be stressful. Lots of little details come together to form a unique event customized to the bride and groom’s personality. Many times the amount of work and planning that goes into decorations can be overwhelming. That’s where a wedding decorator comes in. They do all the heavy lifting for couples and work hard to make sure the decorations and arrangements are picture perfect. Wedding decorators guide couples through the process of designing the perfect theme and help create a wedding that is customized to fit each couple’s vision. “We set up and tear down. We do as much or as little as you want,” event decorator Deb Buche said. She and Sydney Zapf run ZEBity-do-dah, a decorating business at

400 N. Main St. Suite 207 in Mitchell. They have over 30 years of experience designing for all events, but weddings hold a special place in Buche’s heart. She loves to see the bride’s vision become a reality.

Planning wedding decor

Like the flowers and clothing selections of the wedding party, the decorations display the color scheme and style of a wedding. “Each girl’s wedding decor is individual for each of their personalities,” Buche said. Color palettes and themes vary depending on the characteristics of the bride and groom. When deciding on centerpieces, silverware, tablecloths and other decorative items, Buche said it quickens the process if the bride and groom have a vision. Pinterest, inspiration boards and example images help Buche and Zapf understand the style and feel

the couple wants to portray. From there the two ladies begin to create custom arrangements to be reviewed and altered by the couple until the perfect arrangement, style and look are achieved. Anything is possible and Buche and Zapf want brides to know they are there to help. “We are able to decorate for the people who come in and say they need a little bit of help,” Buche explained.

The wedding day

When the big day finally arrives, wedding decorators take more items off a bride’s to-do list by installing and dismantling decorative pieces. Instead of tying bows on the backs of chairs two hours before the wedding ceremony, brides can spend more time relaxing. Hiring a decorator allows brides and grooms to sit back, relax and let the professionals handle the details. The results will be picture perfect.

Choosing wedding color palettes Some brides may feel beholden to the color white on their wedding days, at least in regard to their gowns. Those who do often embrace the opportunity to showcase their personal styles and set the mood for their nuptials by embracing various colors throughout their ceremonies and receptions. Color can be a critical component when establishing the ambiance for a wedding. Color can evoke certain moods and set the tone for the day. Some colors work better together than others, so while choosing a color scheme may seem like an easy undertaking, some couples may find it requires more careful consideration than they first imagined. According to the bridal guide A Practical Wedding, wedding colors can give couples a starting-off point for all of the other details of their weddings. This ensures the wedding ultimately has a cohesive look. Colors need not necessarily match, but borrowing on similar hues can make it easier to plan wedding party wardrobes, flowers, table linens, and much more. Colors can come from anywhere, but many couples try to coordinate their color schemes with the season in which the wedding takes place. In fact, couples who are finding it difficult to decide on a palette can look to seasonal colors for inspiration. For example, pastels and blooming flowers can set the scene for spring weddings, while jewel tones and rich reds and greens may be fitting for winter ceremonies. Some couples opt for more loosely defined color palettes, such as

neutral and natural colors. Country and garden weddings can borrow ideas from the landscape, with natural linens paired with wildflowers. Using whites, grays and beiges enables couples to add a pop of color without overwhelming the setting. Brides magazine suggests that couples avoid choosing too many colors. A maximum of three with one metallic can ensure that things look cohesive without being overthe-top. Also, brides and grooms needn’t feel pressured by the “hot” colors of the moment. As with clothing and hairstyles, trends change. It is better to select colors that will stand the test of time and look good for years to come. Couples may have to incorporate colors already at their wedding venues into their style. Fortunately many reception sites are outfitted in neutral tones to enable customization. The wedding resource The Knot also says having a basic knowledge of the color wheel can help. Typically, colors that pair well together are those that are opposites on the color wheel. Also, colors that share proximity on the color wheel will have similar tones and play well together. Examples of opposite colors include purples and yellows, reds and greens, and oranges and blues. Couples should not be afraid to take some chances with their color palettes, especially if they want to make a bold and modern statement. — Source: Metro Creative
