Kernel boys turn page to new season With new leadership, MHS eager for new year By Marcus Traxler The Daily Republic Finally, a chance to turn the page. Following a winless campaign a year ago, the Mitchell High School boys basketball team is ready to start a new chapter. And with a new season brings a new head coach. Head coach Todd Neuendorf said the Kernels’ intensity has been good thus far during early season practice. “We’ve had some 6 a.m. practices and everyone has been in the gym ready to go at 5:55,” Neuendorf said, adding Mitchell, which was 0-21 last year, had 47 kids try out for basketball this season. “They’re eager to learn and they’re like sponges right now. That energy and being ready to play, that’s been a nice surprise.” There’s a lot for the Kernels to learn under Neuendorf, who comes to Mitchell after coaching for a decade at Aberdeen Roncalli. He replaces Erik Skoglund. There’s a whole oensive and defensive playbook to be learned, and Neuendorf said his team is “behind the 8-ball getting used to a new system.” “In most other places, kids are coming in and there’s already been a program
in place, so you can pick up practice in stride,” Neuendorf said. “Everything we put in, it’s brand new. We’re taking a lot of time installing our defense and our offense probably isn’t where we want it to be right now. You’re going to watch this team get better as the year goes on.” Carter Cavanaugh, one of seven seniors for the Kernels, said the team has worked on being a cohesive unit on both oense and defense. On oense, that includes cutting down on the amount of dribbling and one-on-one plays. On defense, it means communicating and focusing on the basics. “We’re going to be a lot more fundamentally sound,” he said. “That’s the most important thing for us.” Senior Jordon Johnson said the defense will be the focus, making sure Mitchell is in the right position and playing quick and smart. “We know we’re capable of a lot more than what we showed last year,” he said. “We have a good group this season and we’re working hard.” Neuendorf cited Cavanaugh, Johnson, Baley Miller and Vincent Michael as seniors who are expected to be key players. Juniors Kiel Nelson, Derek Factor and Kaden Soukup, along with sophomore Carter Jacobsen, are expected to contributors. “Every drill we’re getting better and we’re just pushing ourselves to be as good as we can,” Miller said. “We know that’s where we can improve.” Mitchell had an intrasquad “Meet the

“It’s going to be huge to build o that and add a few kids to that group,” Morgan said about carrying momentum from the volleyball team into the basketball season. “It’ll be interesting to see the maturity from sophomores now juniors and what success we’ll have.” The Kernels return last year’s leading scorer in junior Mackenzie Miller, who By Eric Mayer averaged 8.5 points per game. Hiemstra is charge of the Kernels, said he’s excited the team’s lone senior. “We have three or four big kids. We have to see what his team can accomplish this season. Coach Morgan said both Misiaszek and Factor will make an impact for the Kernels. Two freshmen -- Avia Haley and Camryn Krogman -- are on the varsity roster. “This team works hard. They worked hard last year,” Morgan said. “Defensively, we’ll be consistent like we were last year. Oensively, as the season comes to close, we’ll start peaking.” Miller said the Kernels, who open their season at Huron on Saturday, want to start the season strong.
“We don’t want to turn the ball over,” Miller said. “We just have to make our shots.” After opening against the Tigers in Huron, Mitchell has three home games against Rapid City Central, Rapid City Stevens and Brookings. Across the state, Morgan pointed to Aberdeen Central, Harrisburg and Brandon Valley as some of the top teams. “If you watched us last year, we got the good shots. We just were missing layups and little jumpshots,” Morgan said. “We were missing around 10 of 15 of them a game. Let’s say it was 10. That’s 20 points. We’ll start making those layups.”

By Eric Mayer The Daily Republic There’s plenty of experience back in the Mitchell High School wrestling room. Mitchell, which qualified 12 wrestlers for last year’s state tournament, returns nine state qualifiers, including all four state placers -- Carson Max (third), Briggs Havlik (sixth), Kyle Foote (eighth) and Logan Sparks (eighth). “We’re excited about what we have as possibilities throughout the year,” MHS head coach Travis Carpenter said. “Just like always, we’re not going to be where we want to be at the beginning of the year. You’re never as good as you want to be at the start.” With a roster of 26 wrestlers, featuring three seniors and 13 juniors, Carpenter said he’ll have some flexibility to move kids in and out of the varsity lineup as well as at different weight classes. “We have a good group of kids,” Carpenter said. “They key right now is mat time. We need to get on the mat and figure out where we’re at so we can get better and work on those things.” Havlik, who has qualified for the state tournament in each of the past four seasons, said conditioning is important early in the season. He added Mitchell’s
experienced grapplers will help the team improve all season. “We want to get on the podium as a team,” Havlik said. “We don’t have to start at the basics. We can start with where we finished last year and get better.” Kyler Bauder, Cole Gehrke, Sutton Carpenter, Max Schoenfelder and Mitch Schladweiler each reached the state tournament last year. Both Havlik and Carpenter said the goal is not only reach the state tournament, but also place. “You look for big things out of those guys,” Carpenter said his returning state placers. “But anyone who has been in the state meet, they got that feel of what it’s like to be there. That motivates kids.” Havlik added he’s hoping to cap his senior season with a strong finish. “I’m looking to go all out this year,” Havlik said. “My main goal is to get into the championship match.” Across the state, Pierre, which has won five of the last six Class A state titles, joins Rapid City Stevens and Aberdeen Central as favorites. The Kernels will host duals against Aberdeen Central (Dec. 14), Huron (Dec. 21) and Brookings (Jan. 16) as well as the Jerry Opbroek Invite on Jan. 13. “The kids in the room are working hard and there isn’t a day I have to get after them to work hard,” Carpenter said. “They are excited for the season to see what we can accomplish.”
Kernel gymnasts prepare for another big season Mitchell eyes another state title By Marcus Traxler The Daily Republic The Mitchell High School gymnastics team is pushing the bar this season. The Kernels have succeeded with their own style of gymnastics — winning three of the last four state championships and finishing second in Class AA a year ago — working on sound, solid routines that they know they can hit and score. But coach Audra Rew said her Kernel team — which numbers 22 gymnasts on the roster this year — will take a different approach this season. Rew said she will have her gymnasts adding a higher difficulty to their routines much earlier in the season. “We’ve normally been a team that works on perfecting a routine, mainly because you don’t want to be doing scary gymnastics,” Rew said. “This year, I’d say we’re going to probably push that line a bit more because we’ve got some kids capable of hitting some harder skills and we’re going to be doing some harder, higher-scoring routines, while still being as safe as possible. “We might be a little more up and down. We might be a little more inconsistent,” Rew added. The goal for the Kernels is always a state championship and Rew said she expects defending champions Watertown to be very good again. “To beat Watertown and the teams we expect to be up at the top again, we need to step up the difficulty,” she said.
Part of the reasoning for the approach is the group of gymnasts Mitchell has this season, which mixes experience and youth. Bailey Roden is the Kernels’ lone senior, and returns after an eighth-place finish individually at the Class AA state meet last season on vault. Junior Maria Krall leads a group of four juniors as Mitchell’s top all-around threat, after finishing sixth at state last year and she was a top-10 finisher in three of the four disciplines, including fourth on floor exercise. Eighth-grader Alyssa Hughes finished tied for seventh at state a year ago on uneven bars and Rew mentioned junior Kailee Henglefelt and eighth-grader Gracie Czmowski as key returners this season, while Kaylee Bauder and Kyra Gropper are a pair of seventh graders who could contribute this season on varsity. “So far, I’m happy with where we’re at,” Rew said. “Last year, it was after Christmas when we were getting harder skills down and we’re already getting that. We just want to improve that success rate.” Rew said the benefit of having a large team means there is a lot of early season competition, something the Kernels could use to find out their strongest gymnasts in each discipline and as a team. “Everyone on this team will be looking to push the person who’s ahead of them and that could be a really great thing,” Rew said. “We might have some surprises and we’re going to take the chance to analyze the first few meets and really understand what our strengths are and how we can take advantage of those.”

Golden Eagles optimistic ahead of new season By Marcus Traxler The Daily Republic The Mitchell Christian boys basketball team has plenty of reasons for optimism heading into a new season. Second-year head coach Jesse Tolsma brings back five key letterwinners from last season’s team, which took a major step forward last year to finish 10-12 on the season. “The really fun part is that we’ve got a great group of returning players,” Tolsma said. “These players have been around for a year and they know what to expect from me. I give these kids a lot of credit because they spent a lot of time in the offseason working and getting better.”
Guard/forwards Riley O’Neill and Christian Cooper are two of the leading returners for MCS, both of whom are seniors this season. Cooper said the team benefitted from a rigorous offseason, facing higher-level competition by playing in summer leagues and camps in Sioux Falls and Mitchell. “We challenged ourselves a bit and I think that only will make us better,” Cooper said. “We know what level we need to be at this season to have success.” Tolsma said the team spent a lot of time working to become stronger and faster, in the weight room and working on conditioning. He said he wants Mitchell Christian to play with both pace and control, something that will
be even more important this season with a 35-second shot clock now in the fold in Class B basketball. “To me, the shot clock shouldn’t change much for us. We want to get good shots and we don’t want to rush shots just because we’re on the clock,” Tolsma said. “If we can put pressure on the defense and get a good shot early in the clock, that’s only good for us. And at the same time, we want to be a good half-court team. I think we’ve got the players to do both.” O’Neill said he’s not expecting much difference for the Golden Eagles in their approach offensively, but said they want to protect the ball. “We think we’ve got a lot of solid players who can make plays. If work in our system and execute, we should be able to compete with anyone,” he said. Junior guard Alec Nelson returns as a
key scorer for Mitchell Christian, as does junior forward Luke Knutson and sophomore forward Ty Vander Pol will be a key inside player for the Golden Eagles. Mitchell Christian will feel the impact of a new region this season, as well. Hanson, Howard and Ethan remain holdovers from the previous district, while Sanborn Central/Woonsocket jumps in, along with traditionally strong programs in Chester Area and Colman-Egan. The top two qualifiers will advance to the Class B Round of 16. “There really is a number of solid teams in our region that will be competitive and I think that’s exciting for every team in our area,” Tolsma said. “We want to take it one game at a time and see where we end up.” The Golden Eagles will play twice in classic events this season, taking on Prairie Seeds Academy (Minn.) in the Mike Miller Classic on Dec. 29. MCS will also play Jan. 27 at the Dakota State University Classic, as well.

We can get into the offense and get a good shot. And just because the clock is running down or might be single digits, we can still take our time and make sure we’re getting a good shot,” he said.

Konfrst recorded 13 points last season, including five goals. Long six points and four assists. Koch and Zimmer anchor Mitchell’s defense. Zimmer also has experience playing goalie and Rezac calls her “our swiss army knife,” because of her versatility. There’s no one all-star. Everybody has to work together.” The goal for the Marlins is to finish in the top three at state. Rezac said that goal is attainable this season, with Brookings, Aberdeen and Sioux Falls among the favorites. “If we can play all the way through the game and not have a second-period slump or get tired in the third period, we can take any team in this state,” Rezac said.

some reserves that will be looking to make their mark on this team. Our schedule will provide us with some tough tests this season but that should only make us better come tournament time.
001625482r1
Coach’s comments: This season, we return two starters, but have five girls returning that have played a lot of varsity minutes. We have some very good teams on our schedule, so we will need to play at a high level every night. Our veteran players will need to be leaders for our girls that have not had a lot of varsity Returning letterwinners for the Parkston wrestling team include, experience.
but we will work together to find the right groove. We will need to be strong defensively and we will also need quick ball movement in order for everything to go as planned. It should be an exciting season for the Black Panthers. I love that we are basically a new team. We had 5 seniors graduate last year so we will be seeing an entirely different team playing together and collaborate together.

WAGNER
Coach: Mike Koupal Conference: Little Missouri Valley and Southeast South Dakota Record last year: 7-14 Key players: Katlyn Knoll, 11; Bella
LeBeaux, 10; Britney Krcil, 11; Kayli Kocer, 10; Faith Tyler, 11; Jaslynn Bruguier, 12; Maesa Dvorak, 10; Payton Mora, 10; Abby Freier, 12; Josi Bouza, 12; Abby Brunsing, 9; Deisha Medicine Horn, 10; Janae Patterson, 12. Coach’s comments: The offseason was a success that will need to carry over into the season. Perimeter shooting and finishing at the rim were huge areas of concern after last year. Our region has changed a little with Tri-Valley and West Central leaving and now Parker joining. With a lack of height inside, Wagner will have to use quickness to stiffen up their defense. Team chemistry is always a huge part of success as well. We will have to mix a balance of young and old to stay competitive.
5’5”; Abby Von Eye, 12, G, 5’; Grace Gran, 9, G/F, 5’7”. Coach’s comments: Although we have four seniors, we’re still a very young and inexperienced team. This just means we’ll have to work hard and play together as a team. The girls and I are very excited and optimistic about this year.

Coach: Jeff Haenfler Record last year: 4-17 Letterwinners returning: 7 Top returnees: Jacob Cihak, 12, G, 5’10”; Brady Cameron, 12, F, 6’5”; Tate Wynia, 12, G, 5’11”; Jimmy Schuurmans, 12, F, 6’4”; Top newcomers: Levi DeJong, 12, F, 6’1”; Logan Schuurmans, 10, C, 6’6”; Korey DeJong, 10, G, 6’2”. Coach’s comments: The keys for us this season will be our team defense, our leadership from a host of returning starters and Letterwinners and our guard play. We don’t have a high scoring offense, so holding teams down with our defense puts us in a position to win. Of our returning starters and Letterwinners a lot of them are big guys so we will need our guard play to step it up this season and lead us to be successful.

Coach’s comments: We have a very quick team that will be able to get up and down the floor. Rebounding the basketball and keeping teams out of the paint will be a priority in order for us to be successful this year. We will need to be able to move the basketball, work for great shots and make defenses work hard to defend our speed.

Coach’s comments: We return four of our five starters from last year’s team that lost in the region championship to PlatteGeddes. With our returners and newcomers, we expect to have a strong nucleus that should allow us to be very competitive. Once again, we will play in two strong conferences that should see competitive balance across the board this year. Our veterans will have to step up and be great leaders right away while we hope to develop some depth as the season progresses. We are excited to get the season started, as we hope to have a strong season again in Gregory.

with height. Our success will be determined by how well we can defend and our ability to work together for a good shot. We lost a ton of good kids to graduation, so we are going to have some learning moments along the way, but feel we should be competitive with most teams on our schedule.

Coach’s comments: We return one starter from last year’s team that finished seventh in the State B tourney in Aberdeen. We ill need great leadership from our three seniors. After four years in Class B, we return to Class A this season. Our schedule does not change much and the Black Panthers will need new players to step up and produce with the loss of four starters and another
17
senior that logged a bunch of minutes off the bench. We need to use our athleticism and shooting to be successful as we will not have a lot of size.

Coach’s comments: Our team will not be very big, but we should be quick. We will look to push the ball to get some easy buckets and get teams running. A key to our success will be if we can rebound and play defense. We need to be able to play good team defense and minimize easy plays. We will need to out-hustle and out-work teams to make up for our size disadvantage. We have a group of young guards that are very talented and will get better as the season progresses.

We hope to improve from last year and feel we have the talent to do that this season. We play a very competitive schedule and feel that this will help us be more competitive at the end of the season.

‘Poetry in motion’: Tigers stress controlling, distributing the basketball By Ryan Deal The Daily Republic The players come and go for the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team, but one thing remains the same: the Tigers take care of the ball. One season after losing its All-American point guard, DWU is still among the nation’s leaders in terms of assist-to-turnover ratio. Early this season, the Tigers are second in the nation with a 1.74 assist-to-turnover ratio. “That’s something we harp on that a lot,” DWU coach Matt Wilber said. “But that’s a players deal. Coach can say don’t turn it over all you want, but players have to execute that stuff.” The Tigers have executed at an extremely high level for the past five seasons. Since the 201314 season, DWU has been ranked in the top five nationally in NAIA Division II basketball in the assist-to-turnover ratio. The Tigers were first during the 2014-15, 201516 and 2016-17 seasons. “With the way that we play, our offensive style is kind of everybody has an unselfish role -- especially with this year,” said Tate Martin, a former DWU point guard and current graduate assistant coach. “It’s not any one player kind of dominating the ball and taking on those duties. It’s just everybody gets each other shots and that’s how we play. We have a motion-style offense and that’s how we get guys shots.” Martin was instrumental in controlling the ball and

Martin finished as the school’s all-time leader in assists (819) and had 237 turnovers in his four seasons running the motion offense, which emphasizes player and ball movement. “That’s the fun part about our offense is we have a coach who puts guys on the floor that he trusts to make the right play and we have got guys that trust each other,” Martin said. “Our offense is all about trust and having guys on the floor that trust themselves to shoot the ball and trust each other to make the right plays. That’s why we see a great success with our assist-to-turnover ratio is we have got guys that just trust each to make the right plays.” The Tigers have been making the right plays during Wilber’s tenure. The season before Wilber’s arrival in 2013-14, the Tigers were 88th out of 153 teams in assist-to-turnover ratio. “The big focus is on the
turnovers and our guys know that,” Wilber said. “The goal is to get to that point where they are confident enough to make a play, but smart enough not to turn it over.” When Martin was running the point, the ball was in his hand’s a majority of the time. But this season, the Tigers are playing through center Jason Spicer, who Wilber calls the best passing big man in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. “I believe that and that makes him one of the best passing big men in the country,” Wilber said. “We can run offensive plays and sets through him like you would maybe a point guard and it’s coming from a different spot.” Spicer said the Tigers aren’t a great offensive rebounding team and don’t emphasize getting steals, so they need to value the basketball in their offense. “We don’t get those extra possessions that other teams get,” Spicer said.
“For our offense to get to the point where it needs to be, we need to be able to protect the ball. Because we are not always going and actively trying to seek those on defense.” And when they are on offense, the Tigers emphasize making the simple play. “We don’t really like to hit home-run passes,” DWU guard Ty Hoglund said. “We like to hit a whole bunch of singles and make the easy pass and then swinging the ball around once or twice. It gets us an easy look every time. So we just kind of focus on taking care of the ball and getting an easy shot every time.” When Spicer and Hoglund were recruited by Wilber, they recognized how controlling and sharing the ball was vital in the offense. “I obviously knew right when I got on campus, that was an important thing in our offense and it is definitely stressed in everything we do,” Spicer said. Spicer was a member of the 2014-15 NAIA national runner-up team, which had 765 assists against 337 turnovers for an efficient 2.27 assist-to-turnover ratio. “When I was getting recruited, it was that 201415 team when they would have 30 assists and two turnovers in a game. When you watched that kind of basketball, it is just poetry in motion,” Hoglund said. “So when it all comes together, it is just fun to play with a group of guys that can take care of the ball.”
