MITCHELL EYES STATE TOURNEY AS NEXT STEP IN REBUILD

Kernels to rely on improved size, defense By Nick Sabato The Daily Republic The Mitchell High School boys basketball program may not be ready to return to the state championship picture yet, but that doesn’t mean the Kernels can’t compete with each of the contenders this season. Despite a 2-19 campaign last year, Mitchell was able to come within a basket of beating four teams that qualified for the Class AA tournament. The Kernels want to move past moral victories, however, and begin to beat some of the top teams. Still a young team with one senior, Mitchell is still rebuilding, but by the end of the season,

the goal is to improve enough to make a push for the state tournament. “We’re going to improve so much as the year goes along,” MHS head coach Todd Neuendorf said. “Sometimes when you bring back a lot of guys, they’re really good right out of the gate and they just kind of stay there. You’re going to see this team get better as we go along. Our goal is to make the state tournament. There’s going to be some ups and downs, but at the end I believe we’re going to play some good basketball.” Mitchell has a talented primary scorer in sophomore Caden Hinker, who averaged 16.2 points per game and is a threat from the perimeter and

in the post. Senior Carter Jacobsen proved to be a strong secondary scorer and a strong complement to Hinker by scoring 13.8 points per game, many of which came at the foul line. The Kernels are also much improved in the post with the 6-foot-6 Hinker, 6-foot-6 Ryley Johansen and 6-foot-7 Zane Alm. Where they must improve is in the backcourt. Ben Helleloid saw spot starting duty at point guard last season and moves into the starting lineup, but Mitchell is still looking to find a secondary ball handler and perimeter shooting. “I think we’re going to have issues where teams are going to zone us up,”

POPPING WITH POTENTIAL

Kernels developing depth early in season By Jeremy Karll The Daily Republic Cole Knippling believes games reflect practice habits. If the Mitchell High School girls basketball team’s attitude and effort are accurate, then the transformation the first-year Kernel coach expects could come into fruition. For now, Knippling has only installed half of his desired system and is closer to the eight-player depth than 10-to-12 player depth he desires. But he’s confident his up-tempo offense and aggressive defensive system will get there, even though last year’s fourth-place Class AA Kernels need to replace

six key seniors. It might just take a few games. “I really think if you come and watch us in December and come and watch us at the end of January, we’re going to look like two totally different teams,” Knippling said. The change starts in practice, as players learn the level of intensity he desires and clean up their defensive rotations in the paint. Protecting and scoring in the paint are both areas Knippling envisions developing, though the Kernels’ evident strength comes on the perimeter. Avia Haley, Macy Kempf and Camryn Krogman will all be thrust into larger roles after seeing limited action off

the bench last season. Ethan transfer Adaya Plastow has given Mitchell an unexpected boost, too. “I think we have a lot of talent. We’re really quick. We have a lot of skilled guards,” Knippling said. “... I’d like to think our post could really be a strength, too, but I think that will take some development in terms of the technique we want to see.” He also points to Regan Waddell, Kelsey Dahme and Gia Winger as consistent role players and leaders. Mitchell will need to be deeper than the seven aforementioned players -- or even last year’s squad -- to run his aggressive style, though.

Neuendorf said. “I don’t think teams are going to be able to match our size and they’re going to have to adjust. We’re going to have to have perimeter scorers and establishing a bench.” Consistent shooting hampered the Kernels at times last season, but they are hoping to offset any cold streaks with defense, an area they struggled last winter. After gaining a year of maturity, Mitchell is going to rely upon its three post players to anchor the defense and protect the rim. The Kernels rarely played two of its three big men at the same time, and when they did, it was in short spells. By clogging the lane, Mitchell is seeking to return the favor and

Knippling wants to play as many as 12 players by January and February, but knows a 10-player rotation is more realistic. The depth allows the Kernels to stay fresh throughout the game and not worry if a player gets in foul trouble. “We’re so young still,” Knippling said. “Can we develop enough players that are ready to go that can play that aggressive, intense defensive style all game without getting tired out and fouling?” That question might not be answered for a few months, but Mitchell will have plenty of early tests. It has four straight games are at the Corn Palace, including against No. 3 Rapid City Stevens (Dec. 21), No. 5 Brandon Valley (Jan. 3) and Twin Cities Academy (Minnesota) on Dec. 28 in the Hoop City Classic. If a guy goes by you, you’ve got a goalie

sitting back there to help protect the basket. That part will improve.” Mitchell opens the season with three consecutive road games at Huron on Dec. 14, Rapid City Central on Dec. 20 and Rapid City Stevens on Dec. 21.

It prepares his team for tough road environments later in the year, but they also carry significant weight during Mitchell’s learning period. “I think our expectations is I know we’re

going to be good by the end of the year,” he said. “I think the goal is, can we win games when we’re learning early in the year? That will determine where our expectations fall, determined on how quickly we can get up to speed.”

EXPERIENCED YOUTH Kernel wrestling turns to veteran underclassmen to meet lofty goals By Nick Sabato The Daily Republic Andy Everson is less than a month into his tenure as the Mitchell High School wrestling coach, but that hasn’t stopped him from placing heavy expectations on his team this season. As the Kernels begin the 2019-2020 campaign, Everson believes

that his team has several wrestlers capable of contending for a state championship and a top-five finish in the team standings at the Class A state tournament. Mitchell returns 12 wrestlers from last season, seven of whom recorded at least 20 wins and five that were consistently in the lineup as freshmen.

“I think we should be in the mix at the end of the year,” Everson said. “We’re a young team, but we’re an experienced young team. A lot of these guys have seen varsity and that makes a difference heading into a state tournament for the first time ever and having been there once before.” Mitchell has plen-

KERNEL GYMNASTS PREP FOR STRONG SEASON

MHS expect to contend for state title By Ryan Deal The Daily Republic Excitement is once again building for the Mitchell High School gymnastics team. The powerhouse Kernels finished second in the Class AA last season as they attempted to win their second straight championship. Mitchell

had won five of the past six state titles prior to last season. Mitchell will again be gunning for the Class AA state title in February. But while that’s the ultimate goal, the Kernels will use the next couple of months to hone their skills. “Instead of just the

same old gymnastics, we are really trying to be creative to come up with skills that work for each athlete,” Mitchell coach Audra Rew said. “I think it just gives them an excitement like if you can’t do this skill on beam, you go over and try this skill on beam and so everybody doesn’t

MCS needs to replace leading scorer, three starters By Jeremy Karll The Daily Republic

Mitchell Christian’s focus is on continual progress. Jesse Tolsma preaches getting better from one game to the next. But it’ll take a team effort as the Golden Eagles need

to replace leading scorer Alec Nelson and three starters from last year’s 10-11 squad. “It’s learning those new roles, seeing who will step up,” the MCS coach said. “But it’s not a one-man replacement. It’s a team effort. It’s

working together and finding the openings. It’ll be hard to replace him, but it’ll be a fun journey.” Leading the journey will be a trio of seniors in Joey Feiner, Jens Enga and Ty VanderPol. Feiner averaged 6.8

MCS GIRLS PUT FOCUS ON CONDITIONING, FUNDAMENTALS

Golden Eagles return experience By Jeremy Karll The Daily Republic The Mitchell Christian girls basketball team wants to enter the season well-conditioned. It’ll have to be with only nine eligible varsity players. Still, coming off a 8-12 campaign, the Golden Eagles return their entire core, albeit a young one. It only features one senior, Anna Cooper, learning from a new coach-

ing staff. Bill Nebelsick takes over head coaching duties, but will split responsibilities with his son, Chris, who coached the middle school team 2 years ago. “They played well last year, played together well last year,” Chris Nebelsick said. “So bringing back that same core of girls, and while our numbers aren’t huge, them all getting to play

together will make a difference.” Nebelsick emphasizes being a well-conditioned team with a small roster, which can’t afford to lose players to injury. Mitchell Christian will be without starting point guard Staci Wolbrink to open the season, though, as she’s dealing with an illness. But it still has a plethora of other options. Cooper is expected to

be its “main scorer” once again, per Nebelsick. He also praised Maggie Reynen and Whisper Eben’s handles, while Audrey Hofer is expected to be a force down low around the basket. “We only got nine eligible varsity girls, so getting them in sync and working together is important,” Nebelsick said. “Conditioning is really important when you only have nine girls, keeping them healthy.” The Golden Eagles will have five straight road contests, including the Huron Classic on Dec. 28. They also have tests against a pair of state tournament teams in Corsica-Stickney (Jan. 14) and Ethan (Jan. 30). The Rustlers knocked off

MARLIN BOYS SPORT 13 SENIORS IN 2019-20 By Jeremy Karll and Nick Sabato The Daily Republic

The Mitchell Marlins boys hockey team made strides on the ice last season, and now it returns a bevy of playmakers. The Marlins saw a three-win uptick (8-10) from 2017-18. But firstyear coach Bill Hamilton feels they could climb even higher up the standings this season, in part due to being led by a 13-senior core. “These kids know what to expect out there and as long as they bring the effort, they’ll succeed,” Hamilton said. “... I think we’re a top-tier team and I think we can finish right up at the top of the standings. That’s what I expect out of them. With the talent we have and the experience, there’s high expectations

for them this year.” The experienced group is off to a promising start, defeating the Sioux Falls Flyers, 4-2, on Friday. It was a few familiar faces doing the offensive work, too. Peyton Nash netted his first two goals of the season, while Austin Kerr and Nick Robinson each scored once. They, along with Max Dailey, are who Hamilton expects to, “do the bulk of the scoring,” and help replace Jake Jarman, who led the team in goals the past two seasons. Kerr’s 23 points (6 goals, 17 assists) are the most among returning players. Nash had 22 points (9 goals, 13 assists) last season, Robinson finished second on the team in goals (11) and Dailey had six points (2 goals, 4 assists). “We have guys that

in practice has been put on effort and buying into Hamilton’s system. He’s been coaching the past 8-9 years, so it hasn’t been a drastic adjustment. “If they buy into the system and what I’m teaching them, it’s only going to make them better,” Hamilton said. “And make them better as a team compared to

having individual players kind of taking the game over.”

Marlins unleash uptempo style in Tronnes’ first year

The Mitchell Marlins have improved in the SDAHA girls hockey standings in each of the last three seasons and a new boss behind the bench could be key in maintaining that suc-

cess. Chris Tronnes takes over as the head coach, replacing Jessica Rezac after the Marlins finished third in the regular season standings and at the state tournament last season. Tronnes was an assistant for Rezac, and although not much will change strategically,

he does favor an uptempo, aggressive system. That aggressiveness suits Mitchell’s personnel, which features youth on defense and explosiveness on offense with the trio of Ashley Jones, Jenna Grosdidier and Kelsey Amick, who combined for 93 goals in 20 games to lead the Marlins to a 16-5 record. “I’m a little bit more uptempo,” Tronnes said. “I like to forecheck heavily -- so two people on the puck in the offensive zone. They’re all really quick and skilled players, so they should fit in quick with how they play the game.” Jones returns at forward after notching 33 goals and 20 assists last

at the state tournament in 2018. Brock and Brandon Sparks also moved up in weight to 120 and 126, respectively. “Numbers are good, but someone gets left out that you would really like to have in your lineup,” Everson said. “I’d rather see guys get a little more

spread out. We’ll still be able to fill the lineup for the most part. We’ve got a logjam at 145, but we’ll be able to get them JV matches. In the future, it’ll be more important because we’re losing our 138 and 152 region next year.” One of the focal points

Everson has stressed throughout the preseason is technique. He believes technique can carry a talented athlete in tough matches and it will be a key for the Kernels this season. Beau Foote took second at 285 during the state tournament last sea-

son as a freshman and classmate Brock Sparks was fifth at 106, while McGinnis and Vilhauer recorded first-round wins. If Mitchell pushes deep into the state tournament, it will need to rely on that technique to reach the podium.

“We have six or seven guys that -- if they work hard, if they buy in to the things I’m showing them -- have a chance to make a run to the finals,” Everson said. “There’s a lot of talent in the room, which is a pretty amazing situation to step into as a first-year coach.”

host of gymnasts with state-meet experience. Freshman Kyra Gropper has two years of high school action under her belt and Rew expects another jump from her this season. “Kyra Gropper has really stepped it up in the offseason and learned a lot of new skills and is just a very solid compet-

itor for us,” Rew said. “So she’s going to have a fantastic year.” Sophomore Gracie Czmowski is also ready for a fantastic year after missing time in recent seasons. “We have Gracie back this year,” Rew said. “So that will be great for us. She just really hasn’t had

an opportunity to have a fantastic high school season yet and meet her potential due to injuries since her seventh grade year. So I am excited to see Gracie meet her full potential.” Freshman Emily Moody has made strides in the offseason, said Rew. Sophomore Alyssa Hughes has been slowed

by illness during the preseason, but Rew expects her to bolster the lineup later in the season. Junior Masy Mock will again be strong on beam and floor, while also adding some leadership to the team. “I feel like Masy’s leadership skills with such a young team are what this team needs,”

Rew said. The Kernels are expected again to battle it out all season with Eastern South Dakota Conference foe and defending state champ Watertown. Rew expects Sioux Falls O’Gorman and Brookings to be among state contenders, while Harrisburg and Sioux Falls Lincoln are on the rise.

If you have an off night on the offensive end, you have to be able to hold down the other opponent.” It’ll be a process, though, starting with the fundamentals. “In these first few

weeks, it’s getting back to the basics and fundamentals,” Tolsma said. “Each day we want to get better. That’s really our underlying factor this whole season. We want to grow each day.” The Golden Eagles’

growth will be tested right away. In their fifth game of the year, they take on Bridgewater-Emery on Dec. 28 during the Hoop City Classic at the Corn Palace. The Huskies took third at last year’s Class

B state tournament, but Tolsma is excited for the early test. “You want the opportunity to play against really good teams,” Tolsma said. “Bridgewater-Emery has been a really good team for

quite a while now. We

season -- nearly doubling her point total -while Amick tallied 27 goals and 26 assists to earn a share of the team lead in points as a freshman. Brooke Jarman also had a breakout season as eighth-grader, scoring 20 goals and 31 points after posting two points the previous year. Mitchell put in 6.8 goals per game and it should help in a push to close the gap at the top of the standings against state champion Aberdeen and runner-up Sioux Falls. “We should be able to compete with any team,” Tronnes said. “We’ve played defensive games and we’ve played games where we scored a bunch of goals. It just depends on the way the game is going.” Mitchell’s offense may shoulder more respon-

sibility as a defensive group that includes two seventh-graders and a new goaltender gains experience. Senior Jenna Grosdidier has gone back and forth between forward and defense, but she will remain on the blue line this year. Grosdidier adds an offensive punch with 33 goals and 16 assists last season and ability to move the puck in her own zone. She will also be an anchor in front of freshman goaltender Sadie Kludt. “With the two younger defensemen back there, she kind of locks it down,” Tronnes said. “She takes control when she’s out there. She makes good passes, she can skate it up if there’s nothing open. Coach’s comments: This year we will look to build off the experience of returning players as we look to improve throughout the season. It’s important this season to establish a winning culture as this group of players is laying the foundation for the program. I’ve only been with the guys for a short amount of time, but I am excited about the great attitudes and commitment I’ve seen from them.

Top newcomers: Dawson Gullickson, 11, 5’9, guard; Trinity Sazue, 10, 5’9, guard; Jeren Herron, 10, 6’, post. Coach’s comments: The Cubs return three starters from last year’s team and a group of juniors and sophomores that gained a lot of valuable varsity minutes as sophomores and freshmen last year. We have a nice mix of guards that play well together and nicesized post players that are growing and developing as they gain more experience. We have a team that can cause problems, both on the perimeter and in the post, for other teams to guard. We will need to take pride on the defensive end every night to give ourselves opportunities to win big games at the end of the season.

Coach’s comments: We return 12 letterwinners with plenty of varsity playing experience. We return our leading scoring in VanDerWerff. Starr is out at this time with the summer injury. DeNeui is back and gives us a strong, physical presence inside along with Foxley who had a very solid first year. Hubers and VanderPol both have good size and look play important roles this season. Boltjes, Miller, Neuman, and Rabenberg all handle the ball and give us good strength at the guard position. Whalen is a very hard worker and looks to give us good minutes. We will have good depth, experience returning, and hope to use that to our advantage.

Coach’s comments: We will have a young team this year with only one senior and one junior and trying to replace three starters from last year will prove difficult. Those things aside we still believe that this team can and will win quite a few games. We will make some changes from last year in style of play as we really tried to play a half-court, slower-pace game last year. This year we are going to pick up the pace to put more pressure on teams and put some points up.

Because of that experience, we are simply reloading and not rebuilding. We play a very competitive schedule, which includes a handful of games against Class A schools. Coach’s comments: We have a good mix of newcomers and returners. This group of girls has put in a ton of time and effort. They have all the right tools to be successful this year. Hustle and hard work will get them to the level of play they want to be. They play hard and work well together. We have some great leadership and a ton of ability. Looking forward to watching this group of girls develop over the season.

Coach: Tim McCain Region: 4B Record last year: 16-7 Top returnees: Kaylee White, 12, 5’5, guard; Mariah Jost, 12, 5’10, center; Taryn Ziebart, 12, 5’9, forward; Taylor Lindsey, 12, 5’7, forward; Morgan Schmiedt, 11, 5’5, guard; Ellie Voneye, 11, 5’6, guard; Trinity Boschee, 10, 5’8, guard; Trista White, 10, 5’8, guard; Teya Moody, 10, 5’6, guard; Brooke Doering, 10, 5’11, center; Dayton Easton, 10, 5’5, guard. Our schedule will be demanding as we will play some tough competition, which should make us better as the year progresses.

Coach’s comments: The girls we have have been playing varsity for the last three or four years. The experience they’ve gained is invaluable. We have a nice mixture of size and speed. We feel that we can be very competitive this year.

Coach’s comments: I do feel we should be in a better position than we were last season, simply for the fact that we did not graduate any seniors and many of the other teams did. I think with the varsity team we have, we should be able to keep our scores in that 120s and hopefully push the 130 range.

Coach’s comments: The Raiders are going to have a mix of veteran and young players. Coming off a disappointing year where the Raiders had high expectations from the previous year, the Red Raiders will have to contend with a very competitive schedule again. Coming right out the gate they get two class A powerhouses. Playing great basketball at the right time will be key for the Raiders. Also keeping everyone healthy will be a big factor to the Raiders’ success.

Top returnees: Max Hawk, senior; Andy Bernie, sophomore, Swade Reis, freshman; Jozey Nesladek, freshman; C.J. Yost, freshman. Coach’s comments: We lost four very experienced seniors from last season, but return six state qualifiers and two state placewinners in three-time defending champion Nash Hutmacher and Gabe Skustad. The ultimate goal is to place as high as we can as a team at the state tournament. We have the depth and experience to be a solid dual and tournament team. I am excited with the amount of talent we return this season and I look forward to coaching this group.

Coach comments: This year we hope we can score some more team points in individual tournaments and duals by getting more bonus points during our matches. We are hoping that we can keep building on what last year’s seniors accomplished. We have a few kids that spent a lot of time in the ratings last year that were unable to qualify for state, so it would be nice to see those guys step up.

The Dakota Wesleyan University wrestling team’s roster is thin, yet infused with talent. With an eight-wrestler roster, second-year coach Casey Mouw knows DWU is still a few years away from competing for the Great Plains Athletic Conference team title. But he’s confident with the wrestlers he puts on the mat. Marcus Urban, Seth Caro and Cole Halouska all garnered GPAC preseason honors, helping DWU earn a vote in the NAIA preseason poll. Urban, a Plankinton native, is the most decorated of the trio, finishing third at 157 pounds at the GPAC tournament and garnering all-GPAC second team honors last year. The junior moved up to 165 pounds this season, but was still tabbed as the No. 3 GPAC wrestler in his weight class and No. 20 nationally. “The thing about this sport that’s great is you have to earn everything,” Mouw said. “... It’s like, ‘Hey, you still got to come back here and earn it all over again.’ (Urban’s) moving up a weight class and guys don’t care who you are, guys don’t care what you did last season.” Caro was picked fourth in the GPAC at 125 pounds. Halouska nabbed fifth at 157 pounds, but went 3-2 at 165 during DWU’s season opener at the Jimmie Open. Urban started his season 2-2, while Mitchell Messersmith (0-2) and Noah Paul (2-2) both wrestled unattached. Mouw emphasizes the long season, though, which includes the GPAC Duals on Jan. 25. That’s less than a month prior to the GPAC tournament on Feb. 21-22, which is when Mouw is concerned about peaking after a near-month break in December. “We really learned a lot last year where we need guys to improve technically,” Mouw said. “The first semester is building that foundation, building good habits and keeping in mind that we don’t need to peak until February. January and February is really the important part of the season.” By that point, the Tigers expect to have Mitch-

ell native Carter Max in the fold. He joined the team midway through their five-week preseason, but Mouw has been pleased with the addition and expects him to see his first collegiate action, “probably within the next couple of weeks.” “He’s kind of working his way up to wrestling at that college level for seven minutes and kind of making a game plan of when we’re going to get him going in competition,” Mouw said. Still, the small roster limits the Tigers’ team goals this season. They won’t end the season as GPAC champs, but that doesn’t mean Mouw can’t envision some hardware coming to Mitchell. “We feel we’ll put some guys on the map that individually will be able to compete for making the national tournament and making a splash in the GPAC,” he said. “… We want guys individually to become All-Americans and go out and try to win a national title.

MITCHELL, HURON SWIMMING MERGE INTO DAKOTA RIPTIDE New combined team has 100-plus swimmers By Jeremy Karll The Daily Republic

The Mitchell Aquatic Club and Huron Parks and Recreation Wobbegongs have a new look this season, joining forces to create the Dakota Riptide. Former Huron coach Bonnie Biel retired at the end of the season, opening the door for the teams to combine into a 107-swimmer squad. There are 67 swimmers from Mitchell and 40 from Huron. “That got the ball rolling,” Dakota Riptide coach Clyde Smith said about Biel’s retirement. “Because we’d always joked about combining the teams and it kind of fell into place.” The timing was right, but so was the makeup of each team. Mitchell has more girls and is a little older compared to Huron’s younger team comprised of more boys. It has Smith believing the Riptide will be a powerhouse in the near future. For that to happen, both teams need to bond outside of the pool, too. Despite forming into one team and following Smith’s race-pace

training, Mitchell and Huron still practice separately. Smith goes up to Huron once every two weeks, but assistant head coach Mandy Hofer leads the Huron swimmers the rest of the time. “We’re making progress and figuring it out,” Smith said. “We are very unified in what we do as a team in the water in practices. They know their teammates, but they don’t know their teammates. It’s one of the conundrums of being in two cities.” To combat the unfamiliarity, the Riptide planned on busing their 11-and-over swimmers to the Snowglobe Classic on Dec. 13-15 in Des Moines, Iowa. Still, as Smith and Hofer tread unfamiliar waters, the Riptide showcased the potential Smith raves about recently in Pierre. “We went to Pierre and we dropped a crazy amount of time. We dropped 496 seconds (as a team),” Smith said. “Usually, we’re probably around 100-120 seconds from everyone.” The first home meet since the

Dakota Riptide’s Abigail Warmbrand competes in the freestyle leg of the 200-yard individual medley during the Mitchell Winter Invite on Nov. 17 at the Mitchell Aquatic Center. merger was the Mitchell Invite on Nov. 15-17 at the Mitchell Recreation Center. Smith said there’s no plans to eliminate any of Mitchell’s summer invites, while it will also add the Splash Central Invite in Huron to its schedule. Huron doesn’t have a facility to host indoor swim meets,

Dakota Wesleyan University’s Ty Hoglund (24) looks to make a move against Midland University earlier this season at the Corn Palace.

Familiarity abounds for the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team. The Tigers will likely look eerily similar to last year as they graduated just Aaron Ahmadu from last season’s 23-10 team. They return a host of impact players with starting experience and a pair of All-American guards in Ty Hoglund and Nick Harden. DWU also returns guard Tyson Smiley, who was suspended from the university last season for domestic abuse and intentional damage to property. DWU coach Matt Wilber said Smiley took online classes while he was suspended and did everything asked of him in order to return to the university. Hoglund and Harden combined for 43.8 points last season, while Smiley posted 8.4 points per game in 2017-18 and was an ascending player late in the year. “Nick, Ty and Tyson are probably going to be the key components of everything going on,” Wilber said. “... Those three are guys are going to have to be the heartbeat.” Last season, Hoglund posted another monster year in his outstanding career. He scored 840 points and averaged 26.3 points a game. He’s scored 2,013 career

points entering his senior season and is the sixth all-time leading scorer in program history, while also making a difference from a leadership standpoint. “He’s been great,” Wilber said. “His energy and enthusiasm and his passion are just as important to our team every day as what he does from a statistical standpoint.” Hoglund and Harden formed one of the better guard duos in the Great Plains Athletic Conference last season. Harden averaged 17.5 points per contest and was fourth in the nation in total steals with 80. “At Dakota Wesleyan we’ve always had a rich history of guard play,” Hoglund said. “But this year I think the most exciting thing is our ability to score 1-through-5 and our ability to score and defend 1-through-5 and I think that’s what Corn Palace fans are going to be most excited for and I think that’s what we are most excited for too is how evenly spread out our team could be this year.” Power forward Collin Kramer and center Sam McCloud will power the frontline. Kramer averaged 7.4 points and team-best 6.2 boards per game last season. McCloud scored 9.5 points a game and nailed 88 3-pointers. Tristan Teichmeier (6.8 ppg) and Mason Lar-

LEARNING ON THE FLY Tigers sport youth, pair of returning All-Americans in 2019-20

It’s the same philosophy, just with a new cast for the Dakota Wesleyan University women’s basketball team. The Tigers want to hold teams under 65 points and out-rebound their opponents on a nightly basis. It’s what powered them to a national semifinal appearance last season. DWU returns four rotation players from that team. But a slew of underclassmen need to step up for the Tigers to experience a third straight deep postseason run. “This will be the most freshmen I’ve ever played since my very first year,” DWU coach Jason Christensen said. “... We’re just trying to figure out where we should be playing kids. I’m very confident in the stuff that we’re running, very confident in our defense and stuff we need to do but now we need to get better with it.” While DWU continues to improve on “getting to the ball (and) rebounding,” Christensen will try to fit the right pieces around his four seniors. That includes a pair of All-Americans in Kynedi Cheeseman (first team) and Sarah Carr (second team). Cheeseman’s 19 points per game led the team last season, making her DWU’s ninth all-time leading scorer (1,467). The Alexandria native has a chance to be just the second women’s player to score 2,000 career points. Carr (17.1 ppg/6.1 rpg), Plankinton native Makaela Karst (9.9 ppg/4.7 rpg) and Jessica Mieras, who missed all of last season, add size to the Tigers. Depending on how Christensen staggers their playing time, it could lead to a

plethora of lineups and playing styles. “We’re two different teams,” Christensen said. “We’re going to be a team where you see us get up and down the floor, and then we’re going to have some lineups in where you’re going to see us just beat it into the paint.” The Tigers have plenty of options, albeit young ones. Kaylee Kirk will take over at point guard for fouryear starter Rylie Osthus, whose all-around game Christensen knows won’t be easy to replace. Haylee Mork will also start for the Tigers after playing just 21 minutes last season. With the graduation of Madison Mathews and Sam Schuh becoming a student coach, four freshmen are in the 9-to-10 player rotation. Twins Kelsey and Lexi Valencia add length to the backcourt, Tripp native Mattilynn Reiner will see time at shooting guard and small forward, and Kamryn Heinz is expected to see action. “Right now, I’m kind of confused with what combinations to play,” Christensen said. “We’re playing a lot of younger kids and trying to find the right mix of who to play with who.” Christensen is ready for the earMatt Gade / Republic ly-season challenge. But the youth- Dakota Wesleyan University’s Kynedi Cheeseman (30) drives to the basket past Briar ful Tigers’ identity won’t be known Cliff University’s Konnor Sudmann (5) and Taylor Lamprecht (34) during a Great Plains Athletic Conference game at the Corn Palace. until later in the year. “So you ask expectations, if you can get to 20 wins that’s a good thing. But I don’t know with this group if you can base it on wins and losses quite yet,” Christensen said. “… I’m hoping when we get back from our Christmas break, we’re where we need to be and I’m starting to feel comfortable with things FROM THESE SUPPORTIVE BUSINESSES! we’re doing.”

WRESTLING DUALS INCREASE PARTICIPATION, FANS State dual tourney met with optimism By Nick Sabato The Daily Republic

PIERRE -- The South Dakota High School Activities Association sought to make wrestling a more fan-friendly sport and the John Krogstrand solution was to bring back the state dual tournament for the first time since 2004. The tournament originally took place from 2001-2004, will run in conjunction with the individual state tournament from Feb. 27-29 at the Premier Center in Sioux Falls is designed to replicate a basketball or volleyball-type environment during weeknight dual meets during the regular season. The deadline for teams to make a decision on participating in the tournament is Dec. 31 and the SDHSAA anticipates potential twothirds of the Class A teams will join the fray and one-third to half of the Class B teams will compete. “It’s much easier for a casual fan to attend a dual,” SDHSAA Assistant Executive Director John Kro-

gstrand said. “The excitement you can create around a dual -- much like a Friday night football game -is singular event that has a finite time. You just don’t get that casual fan and that level of school A versus school B. “The whole point of the dual is to return that Tuesday, Thursday, Friday night rivalry aspect to increase participation, growth and to retain the kids that are out for the sport,” Krogstrand continued. Teams must compete in eight dual meets during the regular season and the top-eight teams will qualify for the state tournament based on seed points. Class A teams must fill 10 of 14 weight classes, while Class B teams are required to fill eight weight classes. While many of the same kids competing in dual meet will also be in the individual state tournament, some may not qualify individually, but could compete in the state dual tournament. It also allows kids who may be knocked out of the individual tournament early on Friday to continue competing in duals later in the day.

Winter Sports Preview TO MAKE AREA BASKETBALL CLASSICS SCHEDULE

MASON MILLER CORN PALACE DEBUT AT HOOP CITY CLASSIC

Son of former Kernel, NBA star to play in Mitchell By Ryan Deal The Daily Republic Another Miller will grace the Corn Palace court. The Hoop City Classic schedule has been released and it’s headlined by Mason Miller -- the son of former NBA sharpshooter Mike Miller -- playing at the same venue his father packed during the late 1990s for the Mitchell High School boys basketball team. Several other Miller family members starred at the iconic arena for the Kernels and Dakota Wesleyan University. “It’s just going to be great to let Mason play where his dad played,” Hoop City Classic President and Mitchell native Ernie Kuyper said. “It’s going to be great for the city of Mitchell, great for the family and great for the state of South Dakota.” Mason Miller and Houston High School (Tenn.) will play the Kernels at 8:30 p.m on Dec. 27. The Hoop City Classic -- formerly the Mike Miller Classic -- is Dec. 27-29 at the Corn Palace and the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls. It’s the 10th annual event. Mason Miller, a 6-foot-9 junior power forward, is the No. 71 ranked player in the newest class of 2021 rankings on Rivals.com. He has a scholarship offer from Memphis, which is where Mike is an assistant coach under former NBA star Penny Hardaway. Florida (where Mike played college basketball) and TCU (where uncle Ryan Miller is an assistant) have also offered, along with Creighton. The Mustangs, who Kuyper said have “probably five Division I players,” will also be led by Alden Applewhite. A 6-foot-6 small forward, Applewhite has offers from TCU, Ole Miss and Texas A&M. He’s the No. 48 ranked player in 2021, according to ESPN.com. Junior point guard T.J. Madlock, whose dad Tony is also an assistant for Memphis, is a member of the Mustangs. Houston will also play at the Sanford Pentagon on Dec. 28 against Yankton, which is powered by rising junior Matthew Mors. The 6-foot-7

The SDHSAA has changed the website to color-code schedules like it does for volleyball, differentiating between duals and tournaments, and has already seen a change in schedules to indicate support duals. “Especially among the Class A schools, the majority of the events are duals,” Krogstrand said. “It’s where we were some time ago, but hasn’t been for quite some time. … Knowing that all kids might have a role on that team, even if they might not compete in the individual championship, they could be a key component for their team.”

Dual tournament format draws concerns

Many coaches are in favor of the dual tournament, but some have expressed concern about the layout.

Howard returns a majority of last season’s roster and added Elk Point-Jefferson transfer Sam Aslesen to the fold. On Dec. 28, the action continues at the Corn Palace and also shifts to the Sanford Pentagon. In Mitchell, Hanson will play Aberdeen Christian at 2:30 p.m. in another Class B boys basketball matchup. South Dakota will follow states like Minnesota and North Dakota in have individual quarterfinals for the individual tournament at 3 p.m. on Thursday and the dual quarterfinals to follow. Semifinal and consolation matches for the individual tournament take place Friday morning, while semifinals, thirdplace matches and dual championships are to be held Friday evening. Some have expressed concerns about wrestling the same individual consecutively or piling up matches in a short period of time. The SDHSAA eliminated fifth and seventh-place matches in the dual tournament, which existed in the initial run of the tournament to avoid teams removing wrestlers still in the hunt for an individual state title. Some have proposed having the tournament on a separate weekend to reflect states such as Nebraska and Wisconsin, but they are also willing to see how the first tournament plays out. boys will play Lyman at 4 p.m., with Mitchell to play Twin Cities Academy in another boys game at 5:30 p.m. Viborg-Hurley boys will play Northwestern at 7 p.m. in a rematch from last season’s SoDak16 game at the Corn Palace, which Viborg-Hurley won 55-52 to advance to state. In Sioux Falls, there will be 10 games at the Pentagon on Dec. 28. Brandon Valley, which won last year’s Class AA boys basketball title, plays DeLaSalle at 6:30 p.m. After Yankton plays Houston at 8 p.m., Huron boys will play Cornerstone at 9:30 p.m. in the night cap. so we don’t run into any of those issues. I know this format is successful in some of the other states, but we need to find the right format for South Dakota. Once we do that, it will be a successful event.”
