CLASSIC SONGS: STAPLES ON WEDDING RECEPTION PLAYLISTS

Metro Creative Felix Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March” is popular at wedding ceremonies near and far, but many songs also enjoy such widespread popularity. Sentimental standards help shape the celebration. Unless a couple intends to buck all trends, the following are some popular wedding reception staples. “Unforgettable”: Made popular in the early 1950s by Nat King Cole, “Unforgettable” experienced a resurgence in popularity in the 1990s thanks to a remix of the song that turned it into a duet between the late Cole and his daughter, Natalie. “Unchained Melody”: The Righteous Brothers classic was a hit in 1965 but rose to even greater popularity when it was included in the 1990 film Ghost. Couples still love to cut a rug to this song at their wedding receptions. “The Way You Look Tonight”: This oft-covered song is one of the more romantic songs to grace the American songbook. Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra

and Fred Astaire have put their own unique spins on the song. “At Last”: Although Ella Fitzgerald was not the first artist to record this song, her version is arguably the most popular. “What a Wonderful World”: Louis Armstrong’s rousing rendition of this classic can make any reception even more upbeat. The song is especially popular for mother-son and father-daughter dances. “Wonderful Tonight”: Many couples love this Eric Clapton classic about enduring love. And guests love to grab their significant others to take their own spins around the dance floor. “Last Dance”: Donna Summer’s “Last Dance” is an ideal choice for the final song of the evening. By the time the song switches from the slow-moving opening chords to a more upbeat pace, guests will be grabbing their party favors and heading for the door.

Explore wedding day transportation options

Metro Creative Engaged couples may be ready to walk down the aisle and begin their new life together, but first they have to get to the ceremony. Couples have many options at their disposal regarding transportation on their wedding days. Limousines continue to be popular choices, but other vehicles also may fit your needs. According to The Wedding Report, a research company that tracks wedding trends, the size of the average wedding party has grown, which means a greater number of people may need a ride to the festivities. But couples also must decide how they will get to and from their ceremonies. Couples who want to arrive in style may want to consider the following options. • Take it to the water. If you’re having a lakeside or seaside wedding, taking a water route to your ceremony can make for a dramatic entrance. Vessel options include speedboats, yachts or something more intimate, such as canoes or rowboats. Afterward, you can coast off into the sunset. • Arrive like royalty. Take a page out of a favorite fairy tale and arrive in a horsedrawn carriage. Carriages can typically fit between two and six passengers. If you cannot find a carriage, consider pedicabs or bicycle-drawn buggies as an alternative.

• Step out of a classic movie. Vintage cars can make a statement. Although you may immediately think of a Rolls Royce, consider cars that embody your personal style. Rugged couples may want a classic pickup truck, while those who live life in the fast lane may prefer a vintage sports car. • Take the party on the road. Moving a large number of people in the wedding party takes forethought. Party buses and SUV limousines can fit a substantial amount of passengers, making them a more cost-effective option for large bridal parties. These vehicles may be equipped with party lights, impressive sound systems and even minibars. • Go eco-friendly. If your ceremony is nearby, arrive on horseback or even peddling a bicycle. Such options are ecofriendly and, in the case of bicycles, may be free. When booking transportation for you and your wedding guests, remember to do so well in advance. In addition, get all agreements in writing, verify that the company is licensed and insured and provide directions and the itinerary to drivers. This will ensure things go smoothly.

, TAKE TWO I D O A GUIDE TO A SECOND MARRIAGE Metro Creative Couples are returning to the altar in increasing numbers, as second and third weddings are becoming ever more popular. Pew Research Center indicates that, as of 2014, 64 percent of divorced or widowed men have remarried, compared with 52 percent of previously married women. Lavish second weddings were once uncommon, but that trend is also shifting. Couples who are taking another crack at marriage are tying the knot with renewed vigor and with weddings that may rival some first-timers. Men and women who are remarrying after divorce or being widowed may not know how to approach planning their upcoming nuptials. The following are some

Metro Creative

guidelines to making the wedding sequel a success. WARDROBE Couples who have been married before often find that they have more leeway with regard to their wedding wardrobes than they did when tying the knot for the first time. Brides may choose something less traditional than a long, white dress. In fact, this can be a time to let loose and select something that is festive or even funky. This also may provide a great opportunity to choose clothing styles from different cultures or ties into one’s heritage. This freedom also allows brides to broaden their horizons with regard to where to buy their wedding wardrobes. Grooms may opt for something more casual than a tuxedo or coordinate with their brides-to-be so they are on the same creative page. Colored tuxedos and vintage suits are acceptable, even though such attire might have raised a few eyebrows the first time around. GUEST LIST The guest list doesn’t have to be a source of anxiety. Others will understand that there may be a melange of people at a second wedding. Children from previous marriages as well as divorced spouses or former parents-in-law are not out of the question. Even

if exes will not be included, make sure they know about the nuptials in advance of others. It’s common courtesy, and it can help head off feelings of ill-will. Some couples choosing to tie the knot again scale back the size of the wedding this time around, feeling something smaller and more intimate — with only the closest of friends and family — is more suitable. REGISTRIES AND WEDDING GIFTS Considering couples who have been married previously likely have many of the housewares and items for daily living that first-timers may not, registering for these gifts is not necessary. What’s more, some of the same guests may have been present at first marriages and gifted then. In lieu of gifts, couples may ask guests to donate to a specific charity or forgo gifts altogether. VOWS Couples can use experience to draft vows that have personal meaning to their unique situations and make the wedding ceremony even more special. People getting married again can impart their own personalities into the ceremony and party to follow. There are no hard rules governing second weddings, so couples can plan their weddings with good times in mind.

STUNNING ENGAGEMENT RING ALTERNATIVES

Metro Creative White diamonds have been the traditional engagement ring stones for decades. While shoppers have experimented with gold, silver, platinum, and other precious metals for ring bands, the star of the show has long been that twinkling, pristine diamond. Even though diamonds may be a “girl’s best friend,” they may not fit every woman’s style, particularly the bride who likes to buck tradition and think outside the box. According to Money magazine, the average engagement ring costs more than $5,800. In addition to being one of the most expensive gemstones, diamonds have become quite commonplace. Some women even eschew diamonds for moral reasons.

Whatever the driving force behind shopping for alternative gems, women who want to set themselves apart from others — and men who want to “wow” their significant others with unique and eyecatching rings — may opt for other dazzling stones. Moissanite: This crystal naturally occurs in meteorites and is nearly as hard, dense and scuffresistant as a diamond. Some feel moissanite offers more brilliance and fire than diamonds. Moissanite is a white-colored stone, so it can mimic the look of a diamond. And since it can be made in the laboratory at a fraction of the cost of even lab-made diamonds, it’s a frugal option. A nearly flawless one-carat moissanite gem

A Vision. A Design. Beautiful Lasting Memories. Nature’s Impressions

can cost less than $1,000. Lemon quartz: This is the trade name for a lemon-yellow stone that is a variety of colorenhanced transparent quartz. Quartz is turned into this sunny hue through an artificial gamma ray irradiation process. Like other quartz gemstones, lemon quartz is considered to be very durable and is therefore suitable for all types of jewelry. Sapphire: Sapphires tend to be blue stones (of varying intensity), but they also come in peach, pink, yellow, green, and white. Sapphire may not sparkle as much as a diamond or even moissanite. However, with the right cut, it can be hard to distinguish any lack of luster. Sapphires are the third hardest mineral, and at about onethird the price of diamonds,

they make an ideal diamond substitute. Morganite: According to the blog Bridal Musings, morganite is currently one of the most popular choices for engagement rings. Its pretty pink hue is romantic and feminine. It also sits at around the same hardness as sapphires, ensuring the rings will endure. Vividly cut rubies, emeralds and tanzanite — all gems that are rarer yet less expensive than diamonds — can make beautiful engagement rings. Some couples also may opt for rings without gemstones, such as traditional Claddagh or “true lover’s knot” rings to signify their union. BestProducts.com Rings

WINTER WEDDING GUIDE

Did you know? Metro Creative The modern bridal shower may trace its origins the 1890s. “The Old Farmer’s Almanac” says the first bridal shower hostess filled a paper parasol with small presents and turned it over the head of the bride-to-be. Soon the concept caught on, and many other women began ‘showering’ future brides in such a manner. Naturally, as presents became larger and heavier, the tradition of literally showering the bride with gifts was modified — but the name has stuck. Bridal showers are designed to equip couples with many of the necessities to start their new life together. This custom is believed to have evolved from an old dowry system, in which a bride was expected to bring valuables to the marriage. The dowry was originally intended as

compensation for the burden of supporting a wife placed on the groom. Some parents of the bride were not rich enough to afford an ample dowry, so friends and family members would offer small gifts to help offset this financial responsibility. Today, both the bride and groom are equal partners in the marriage, bringing together their collective wealth. However, showers are still held regardless of the financial need of the bride as a way to offer good wishes before she embarks on her new journey.

creme colors recently. But another common trend Anderson noticed is the shape of bouquets. He said when he first got into the business, a teardrop shape was going out of style, but has recently began to see a comeback. But area brides are still going with a handheld, rounded shape with the stems showing, Anderson said. As far as textures, “bling is important,” Anderson said. This could be including gems or pearls within the bouquet. He’s also seen brides include a grandmother’s handkerchief wrapped around, adding a personalized touch on the wedding bouquet. With some winter weddings, brides may

worry about out-ofseason flowers, but Anderson said that is not a problem, as Cherrybee’s orders from all over the country, and many flowers are grown in greenhouses. One of the most common flowers ordered in this area, according to Anderson, would be Baby’s Breath. This flower, designed with canning jars for a more “rustic look,” has been a common theme among area weddings, Anderson said. But in the end, according to Anderson, it all comes down to what the bride wants for their special day. “It’s gotta be what the bride has always dreamed of. It doesn’t matter really the weather …” Anderson said. “Every bride has always dreamed of a certain thing — a certain flower, a certain color, a certain dress. And I think that’s what bride’s based it off of — what they like.” Metro Creative

WEDDINGS AND NONTRADITIONAL FAMILIES

Metro Creative Families come in all shapes and sizes. During special events — particularly those steeped in tradition, such as weddings — blended families may have to employ certain tactics to ensure the events go off without a hitch. When planning their weddings, couples must give consideration to the needs of their families. Even though a wedding is about the union of two people, oftentimes couples engaged to be married must contend with the politics of divorce or other familial issues. This includes if and how to incorporate stepparents and stepsiblings into the ceremony and celebration. There are no traditional rules regarding how to handle blended families, so brides- and grooms-to-be can customize their decisions based on their own unique situations. Even when families have been happy through the years, the unique circumstances and traditions surrounding the nuptials can dredge up former insecurities, and certain aspects may require extra patience and tact. Here’s how to navigate the process. • CONSIDER STEPPARENTS AND STEPSIBLINGS VIPS. Brides and grooms who are not particularly close to their stepfamilies still have to recognize the role they play in the family dynamics. These people are still family, so respect and courtesy should be offered. If there is any lingering animosity, extend the olive branch on this day and try not to let anyone be made to feel as if they are unimportant. A simple announcement of who stepparents are at the wedding reception or inclusion of their names on wedding itineraries can help smooth over any potential bumps. • PUT OTHERS’ NEEDS BEFORE YOUR OWN. While the wedding may be about you and your future spouse, you must consider the feelings of others. Biological parents and stepparents may act defensively if they feel uncomfortable or hurt, and that can create an air of negativity to the day. Try to avoid this by considering potential areas of conflict. For example, mothers might be hurt if their ex-husbands’ new girlfriends are asked to be in a group family photo. Instead, select separate times to have everyone included. Remember to give parents and stepparents priority seating as well, and they each should be seated next to someone they love and someone with whom they can converse comfortably. You may think everyone can play nice, but it’s best not to push the issue just to make a point at the wedding. • RECOGNIZE THAT SOME FAMILIES BREAK THE MOLD. Recently, a father made waves on the Internet when a video of him pulling the bride’s stepfather up to assist in walking her down the aisle went viral. This was a wonderful image of families making it work despite their differences or the awkwardness that can result when brides or grooms have parents and stepparents in attendance. Although this scenario might not play out for all, find ways to impart a special touch, especially if you’re close to both your biological parents and your stepparents. For example, your biological father may walk you down the aisle, while your stepfather may enjoy the first dance. • ORDER FLOWERS AND GIFTS FOR ALL. Purchase flowers and wedding party gifts for all of the special people in your lives, including your stepfamily. Weddings can be complicated affairs when factoring in blended families. With patience and compassion, such families can enjoy a beautiful and happy day.

Good luck wedding superstitions Couples on the verge of tying the knot spend lots of time hoping their wedding days go off without a hitch. The threat of rain drops or temporarily misplaced rings can make couples feel that the hands of fate are casting bad luck on the proceedings, but couples need not worry. Superstitions are not always negative, and there are many things thought to bestow good luck on couples about to become husband and wife. The following are some of the more popular harbingers of good luck couples can look for on their wedding days. • Rain: Rain signifies various things in different cultures, and many of those amount to a dose of good fortune for a wedding. Rain can represent fertility, suggesting that couples will have many children. Rain also can signify cleansing and renewal or the washing away of past ills. • Sugar: Many Greeks believe tucking a sugar cube into your glove will mean a sweet union between the newly betrothed. • Coins: In Sweden, a bride puts a silver coin from her father and a gold coin from her mother in each shoe so she will never have to go without. • Unpleasant things: Egyptian women may pinch the bride on her wedding day for good

luck. The English believe finding a spider in your wedding dress means good luck. • Bells: Bells may chime at Irish weddings to keep evil spirits away and ensure a harmonious family life. Some brides also will tuck small bells into their bouquets. • Day: Some cultures view certain days as luckier than others for getting married. English tradition suggested Wednesday was the best day for getting married, with Monday weddings bringing wealth and Tuesday events bringing good health. English folklore states that Saturday is the unluckiest day to tie the knot. Many traditions are in place to keep bad spirits away from wedding proceedings and ensure good luck. Middle Eastern brides, for example, paint henna on their hands and feet to protect themselves. The tradition of the groom carrying his bride over the threshold is to protect her from evil spirits lurking below. Good luck charms vary depending on culture and geography. Several superstitions have withstood the test of time and can give brides and grooms a little more security on their wedding days.
