Sex. It’s penetrating the minds of all college students. They’re thinking about it, talking about it and probably doing it. But what do students really have to say about the controversial topic? Is it truly as complicated as it’s made out to be? The Daily Reveille canvassed the campus community in search of students’ thoughts on all things copulatory, and now we proudly present:

FAMOUS SEX SCANDALS Rep. Weiner resigned after boxer photo appeared on Twitter Former Rep. Anthony Weiner was caught with his pants down — literally — when a photo of him clad in boxer briefs appeared on his Twitter in May. The congressman initially denied that the photo was of him, claiming his account had been hacked. Reports soon surfaced that Weiner had been engaged in relationships with several women over the Internet for months and the leaked photo was just one of many he’d been sending to them. Shortly after, Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin, announced she was pregnant and Weiner requested a leave of absence from Congress to receive professional treatment. After enduring pressure to step down from party leaders and peers, Weiner resigned in June, 20 days after the photo was initially leaked. Former President Bill Clinton was impeached in 1998 after an extramartial affair with the 22-yearold White House intern was exposed. The relationship, which was said to have started in 1995, dominated headlines and primetime television for months after the initial reports surfaced. Throughout this time, rumors and lies circulated regarding the affair. Clinton repeatedly denied the scandal and coined the famous line: “I did not have sexual relations with that woman.”

The world collectively cringed in 2009 when actress and singer Mackenzie Phillips confessed she had been involved in a 10-year sexual relationship with her father, John Phillips, leader of 1960s band The Mamas & The Papas. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Phillips said that on the night before her first wedding, when she was 19, “I woke up … from a blackout to find myself having sex with my own father.” Phillips said she ended the relationship after she got pregnant and didn’t know who fathered the baby. Her father paid for her abortion, and she said after that she never let her father touch her again. Contact The Daily Reveille’s news staff at news@lsureveille.com

LSU ranks in top 50 in sexual health University No. 29 in Trojan survey Brian Sibille Staff Writer
LSU is getting it up in the rankings. The University has ranked of the most sexually healthy schools in the nation, according to a recent study by Trojan Condoms. The University was ranked No. 29 among more than 100 American schools. LSU and Tulane University were the only Louisiana schools ranked in the top 50, while others like the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and Louisiana Tech University ranked among the least sexually healthy. The most sexually healthy schools included Columbia University, Princeton University and the University of Florida. Information from different schools’ health centers were gathered to compile the rankings, and criteria included the availability of quality health centers, contraceptives and sexually transmitted disease testing sites on campus, among other factors. The LSU Student Health Center has extensive sexual education available to students, said Kathy Saichuk, Health Promotion coordinator. Saichuk said the Health Center’s goal is to dispel sexual myths and other misconceptions so students can make informed decisions about sex. “Students aren’t as well informed as they should be,” Saichuk

said. “We want them to practice safer sex. Any sexual situation presents risks, so safe sex isn’t possible, but safer sex is.” She said the center’s health promotion department tries to educate students as early as possible. The department is involved in orientation sessions so potential students can learn about sexual health before they begin college. The center caters much of its sexual health promotions toward freshmen, when many of them are free from their parents’ beliefs and are able to form their own, Saichuk said. “For many students, freshman year is the first time leaving home,” she said. “College is a time to broaden paradigms.” The center tries to make learning about sex comfortable for students, offering anonymous advice over the phone and e-mail or faceto-face counseling, Saichuk said. She said the Health Center emphasizes that students are in control of their sexuality and can find
their niches on campus if they want to abstain from sexual activity, reminding students that not everyone is having sex. “We want students to have pertinent evidence-based information in order to make the healthiest choice possible,” Saichuk said. “We are sexual beings, and sexual health is one aspect of total wellness for us.” Saichuk said the center does a good a job of promoting sexual health but can always improve. One of the center’s more recent initiatives is spreading awareness of programs and information sessions through Facebook. The reason LSU ranked higher on Trojan’s list than other Louisiana institutions may be because LSU is the flagship university and has more funding, Saichuk said. But she said many of the lower-ranked schools are in the “Bible Belt” of America where cultural and religious beliefs often discourage sexual education. “We are fortunate to have had resources and an open-minded administration,” she said. “The University is supportive of sexual education.” Jordan Brown, communication studies sophomore, said the University is more tolerant than other Louisiana schools, but she has not noticed much promotion of sexual health on campus. “A lot of people don’t wear condoms and don’t care,” Brown said. “People are more concerned with not getting pregnant than avoiding STDs.” Contact Brian Sibille at bsibille@lsureveille.com

Chocolate, ginseng and nutmeg may taste different, but these foods have one thing in common — they are aphrodisiacs. Scientific evidence shows that certain food products have sexually enhancing properties, according to a May 2011 study in the journal Food Research International. The study ‘My mom found nutmeg wouldn’t stimulates the let us nervous syseat kiwis tem, which insexual because creases behavior, and they make ginseng has potential you horny.’ the to treat both and Cornelia Boyd physical child care development mental barriers to sexual perfreshman formance. The results state chocolate contains a chemical that increases serotonin and endorphin levels in the brain. Vanessa Richard,
Student Health Center dietician, said the other chemical in chocolate activates receptors in the body and increases sensitivity. Nutmeg and chocolate are also high in antioxidants, which remove potentially damaging agents and have healthful properties, Richard said. “Antioxidants can help slow the aging process, reduce inflammation and prevent diseases like Alzheimer’s and cancer,” Richard said in an e-mail to The Daily Reveille. “An antioxidant in dark chocolate may reduce the risk of heart disease.” Child care development freshman Cornelia Boyd said she heard kiwis have aphrodisiac qualities. “My mom wouldn’t let us eat kiwis because they make you horny,” Boyd said. But sociology and English sophomore Molly Adams said she doesn’t think aphrodisiac foods are effective. “It’s more of the mood than
the food,” Adams said. Associate sociology professor Troy Blanchard said the effects of aphrodisiac foods are amplified by the media and advertisements, especially during holidays such as Christmas and Valentine’s Day. “There is a biological component and a social component,” Blanchard said. “Maybe we’ve reached a point where it’s hard to disentangle the two.” Amy Joffrion, secondary English senior, said she would eat aphrodisiac food to test the effects. “I don’t feel like I need it,” Joffrion said. “But if it’s going to enhance it, why not?”

Perceptions of sexuality differ around the world Lauren Duhon
Contributing Writer
From Russia to Thailand, France to Saudi Arabia, different cultures perceive sexuality in different ways. In the United States, the societal perception of sex varies drastically from other parts of the world. European students reiterated this idea. As international students, they believe they experience a more sexual environment back home compared to the United States. Italian psychology graduate student Violetta Gatti said she can see the differences between countries after traveling around the world. She said the sexual culture in Italy is more exposed and vulgar. “Anytime you watch television, it is there,” Gatti said. Gatti said even in a religious country with strong moral convictions, sexuality is prevalent. French mass communication graduate student Charlotte Dupenloup said the concept of dating is not
4
present in French culture like it is in the States. In France, romance, and sex are generally more spontaneous. “I don’t like this concept of dating here,” Dupenloup said. “Back home, we just have sex and see what happens from there.” But both Dupenloup and Gatti said they value Southern charm. “Most guys in Italy spend too much time talking about themselves,” Gatti said. “Here, there is more focus on the girl. I prefer this approach.” Russia, sandwiched between sexually open and conservative countries, appears to have a perception of sexuality similar to the U.S., according to Olga Verbovaya, social work graduate student. She said for some people, sex is an act of emotional and physical closeness, but for others it’s just fun. She said young people tend to be more careless about sex. “Just like in the U.S., sex is used for manipulation by the mass media and politics [in Russia],” Verbovaya said.
No matter how negative it may be portrayed, sex is still an important factor in Russian culture and an important aspect to relationships, she said. She said things are not as censored in Russia as they are in the U.S., making it more common to accept sexuality. Verbovaya said Russian ideas about sex are becoming more similar to that of Americans, and she doesn’t like how the sexual culture in Russia is degrading into something frivolous. “American values, including sexual values and culture, are still being established,” Verbovaya said. “Russia has a rich history, and it’s almost gone.” In biochemistry doctoral student Sunyana Mitra’s native India, public displays of sexuality are not allowed. She said her country is far more conservative, and sex is a taboo subject. “There is no discussion of sexuality,” Mitra said. “Sexuality is not a dominant factor in our culture.” Even though the Indian culture
is famous for the Kama Sutra, an ancient Indian Hindu text about human sexuality, Mitra said she believes the meaning was lost along the way. Mitra said she likes the freedom to display sexuality openly, but she believes America is too open in comparison to India. Saudi Arabian culture is similar to Indian culture when it comes to sexuality. Akram Albarghouti, Saudi Arabian petroleum engineering senior, said sex is not considered an appropriate topic of conversation in his country. “Culturally, a couple would have a bad reputation if they had premarital sex,” he said. “Sex is considered to be only for marriage.” He said there are no limitations with sexuality in the States, and he prefers the U.S. over Saudi Arabia because of the openness. “Open sexuality is good, but only to an extent,” Albarghouti said. Law bans sex offenders from websites ACLU of La. is suing Gov. Jindal Clayton Crockett Staff Writer
Final arguments for and against the Louisiana Legislature’s House Bill 55 — which bans sex offenders guilty of crimes involving minors from using social networking sites, chat rooms and peer-to-peer networks — are due Nov. 23. The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit against the state after the bill took effect Aug. 15, according to Marjorie Esman, executive director of the ACLU of Louisiana. According to Lt. Terry Mathis with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office, Baton Rouge has a particularly large number of sex offenders. He said the city is home to 129 tier-three offenders, which are
the “highest risk offenders,” including “major rapists and multiple offenders.” Baton Rouge has 91 tier-two offenders, whose crimes involved juveniles, and 234 guilty of tier-one offenses, which includes simple rape, indecent behavior with minors and incest, among other offenses. The ACLU derides the social media bill in a news release, calling it a breach of First Amendment rights and too broad in application, stating that those subject to the ban would be forbidden from using any sites featuring comment sections, such as newspaper sites. “It is essentially a blanket ban on the use of the Internet,” Esman said. “And it is unconstitutional to the extent that it bans any sites with comment sections.” Esman also noted the difficulties of monitoring and enforcing the ban from both sides of the law. “You don’t know whether or not the sites have comments unless you’ve
been there,” she said. “But it would be a felony if you go.” According to Esman, the sex offenders in question would be able to apply for waivers to visit particular sites from their court of indictment or probation and parole officers, but she says this is too difficult to maintain. “You can’t run to the court every time you see a link,” she contended. “You’d have to get permission for everything you want to do.” Both of the ACLU’s clients in the case rely on the Internet for work. One of the clients was convicted for possession of child pornography, according to the lawsuit. Esman pointed out that statutory rapists would also fall under the category of sexual offenders guilty of crimes against minors. She added that one “wouldn’t be able to fully interact as a student” under such a ban, saying that “you’d be really limited in your ability to actively participate in a

Interracial couples become more common, accepted Pew: 15 out of 100 marriages interracial Trey Nwankwo Contributing Writer
An interracial couple is not a rare sight these days, but Sacha’ Washington and Michael Schmitt say they still turn heads. Washington, a black pre-medical technician sophomore, and Schmitt, a white computer science freshman, say their relationship has a number of perks, but they are sometimes faced with disapproval. “I get dirty looks everywhere we go,” Schmitt said. “I don’t get upset; I like that someone would care enough to notice.” But the couple is not alone, according to a recent study by Michael Rosenfeld, a Stanford University sociologist who specializes in ethnicity and family structure. The study estimated that 2 percent of America’s couples in 1970 were interracial, and now that number is at 7 percent, representing approximately 400,000 out of 59 million couples. Forty years ago, interracial relationships were ostracized and even outlawed in some states. The 1967 Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia ruled whites could marry nonwhites, effectively expunging the biggest barrier to interracial marriage in the United States. As a result, the number of
interracial relationships grew, and the generation of mixed children from the ’70s is now helping to erase the stigma, according to Laurie Chancey, sociology graduate student and marriage and family class instructor. “In the ’70s there was a shift from public opinion to individualism,” Chancey said. “Racial tolerance has come along with that. Multiple generations of mixed-race families are going on, and people from even as far back as the ’30s and ’40s are removing the stigma

and setting the tone.” Patrick King II, mass communication junior, said his parents are
among those who have defied the social barriers. Each of his parents is mixed with black and white, and he said he appreciates the blend of color he grew up with. “I’m down for it,” King said. “I love being interracial, but I never really noticed. There was no culture clash or anything in our home.” A recent Pew study on interracial relationships found that nearly 15 percent of all new marriages in the United States in 2008 were between two people of different races. This is approximately six times the
rate of interracial marriages in 1960 and double the rate from the ’80s. These statistics ultimately mirror the fact that more couples from different races are hooking up, Chaney said. “Hooking up is becoming a more common, permanent way of life,” she said. “Looking at marriage is a good way to gauge statistics.”

CDC suggests men receive HPV vaccine Kittu Pannu
Entertainment Writer
HPV vaccines aren’t just for women anymore. The Centers for Disease Control has suggested that men should begin receiving the three-shot HPV vaccination to prevent spreading genital warts and human papilloma virus. “This has been a permissive recommendation to vaccinate boys for several years,” CDC spokesman Tom Skinner said. “More information has become available about the effectiveness of the vaccine as well as some information and new data about the safety of the vaccine [and] cost-effectiveness of the vaccine.” But the American public has been slow to get on board. “It’s probably because parents don’t want to admit that their kids are going out and partying ... and letting it all hang out,” finance sophomore James Blass said. “[Getting vaccinated] is a good thing to do, but I don’t think we should be told to do it.” Maddie Louviere, apparel design freshman, said she was familiar with the vaccination before she received it. “I knew what it protected me from,” Louviere said. “It was just like a normal shot. It’s not that serious of a thing to do, and it helps you a lot.” Louviere said men have just as much responsibility to be vaccinated. “I think it’s only fair that guys get it too,” Louviere said. “You don’t want to catch something from someone you’re with now and then have it when you get married.” Full-time students and those who pay the Student Health fee can receive the Gardisil injection at the Student Health Center, said Ashley Granger, Health Promotion Coordinator at the LSU Health Center, in an
e-mail to The Daily Reveille. “The CDC estimated that 75 to 80 percent of males and females will be infected with HPV in their lifetime,” Granger said. Males can be carriers of HPV because the virus is common, Granger said. “If the male is sexually active, then he could be a carrier,” she said. “Most men who get HPV never develop any symptoms or health problems.” Even if a person already has a form of HPV, the vaccination will still provide protection from spreading different strains of the virus, Granger said. The need for the vaccine is growing, Skinner said. “There are estimates out there that half the population at some point will be infected with the human papillomavirus,” Skinner said. “It can also cause various types of cancers in men and cervical cancer in women.” The best way to be safe is to get vaccinated, Skinner said.

How did you have the sex talk with your parents?
Andy Warhol once said, “Sex is more exciting on the screen and between the pages than between the sheets.” Whether Warhol’s statement holds true is in the eye of the beholder, but one thing is certain: As a society, we are infatuated with sex. this contentious topic. In dissecting a matter as layered as this, one prevailing theme emerges: We’re all innately sexually beings. But more importantly, we aren’t so different after all. I hope you find that to be true in today’s issue — it’s something our country forgets far too easily. Plus, if you’re lucky, you can take what you read here and apply it between the sheets.

THE G-SPOT
The measure of a man — Is it that important? What is with men’s obsession with their penises? I admit, it is a fascinating organ, but are you guys still fretting over how big you are? Researchers suggest the overwhelming concern for a large penis has resulted from the porn industry, with 37 percent of men GABIE BACQUES claiming it began Columnist after watching erotica. Thank you, Ron Jeremy. Now we’ve got a slew of selfconscious dudes having a meltdown every time someone jokes about them having a small one. That may be a little extreme. Honestly, no one cares how big your penis is as long as it works. That’s not to say there aren’t women out there who do make it a point of interest. That would be like saying there are no men who dislike a girl based solely on small breast size. I suppose, in a way, being insecure about a seemingly small penis is comparable to the insecurities many women with flatter chests possess. However, everyone can’t see when a guy is less than average, unless he has an issue with wearing pants. Honestly, from a woman’s standpoint, length is almost insignificant. A vagina is, on average, 3-4 inches deep. Don’t get down if you don’t measure up, ladies. Seriously though, unless you have a micropenis, there is no need to worry about fulfilling sexual activities. The bigger issue here is being too long for a woman. Now I’ve offended the big guys. Not to worry. The vagina, when aroused, stretches to accommodate

But what does sex mean to you? Any given person would produce a different response to this question, which brings us to today’s edition of The Daily Reveille. whatever’s inside, so extra foreplay may be beneficial for you so-called lucky ones. If the woman is not aroused enough, the cervix may take a beating, which can be very painful. Certain positions may be better for the longer fellows. Penis length is not nearly as significant in sexual satisfaction as girth. Since the upper two-thirds of the vagina is free of nerve endings, it doesn’t necessarily matter how deep it’s penetrated. According to a study by Russell Eisenman, 90 percent of the women surveyed reported width being more considerable for pleasure. This makes sense, as the powerhouse of female sexual pleasure is located outside and in the
lower one-third of the vagina. The more area covered, the more nerve endings contacted, and more pleasure will be achieved. It’s silly that these concerns are still being addressed. I’ve read the same responses in countless popular magazines since I was 13, yet guys are still fixated on this issue. It simply doesn’t matter. Unless you have a serious problem — a penis less than two inches long or eight inches around — quit whining. Confidence and character are better indications of how satisfying someone is. If you’re too concerned about how you look, whether it’s your face or your junk, your performance is going to reflect that. If you’ve just always been self-conscious about
your privates and simply cannot get over it, seek some therapy. No one worth judging you is going to care what it looks like or what size it is. They’re all just as ugly or just as beautiful — whatever your taste. As long as it works, that’s all that really matters, right? Gabie Bacques is a 21-year-old animal science senior from Mandeville. R. Kelly, Hitler show us the sexiest ways to succumb Is it possible to die from sex? Absolutely. Undoubtedly being one of the most preferred ways to die, sex is not often the cause. But there are exceptions to every rule. So what are the sexiest ways to die? The first way that came to my mind was death involving a certain stiffening substance commonly known as Viagra. Yes, it is possible to die from complications resulting from taking Viagra, Cialis or any other boner pill. Listen carefully during the commercial next time. You’ll hear that you should talk to your healthcare professional to make sure your heart is healthy enough for sexual activity. A calm, seductive voice is inconspicuously warning you that taking this pill and having moderate to intense sex could result in a heart attack if
you are either old, obese or have a pre-existing cardiovascular condition. Yes, my flaccid friends, erectile dysfunction medications can cause heart attack and stroke in individuals who are not healthy enough for sexual activity. When that day comes, please kill me. Prove it, you say? Nelson Rockefeller, vice presiParker Cramer dent under Gerald Columnist Ford, suffered a heart attack allegedly during intercourse with his aide, Megan Marshack. He most likely was not taking Viagra back then, but it proves it can happen regardless of drugs taken. Say you have an R. Kelly fetish,
ANTIMATTER
NUTSINEE KIJBUNCHOO / The Daily Reveille
and like ‘ole Robert, you like to tinkle on people — more specifically, on your sexual counterpart. Let’s say you ate some asparagus earlier that day, and your sexual partner is repulsed by your urine and attempts to avoid the pungent golden shower by covering his or her face with the bedsheets. You think this is funny, and the flow continues. The result is a wet sheet covering your partner’s face, preventing him or her from breathing. This is called water boarding and is only legal in Guantanamo Bay. Simulated drowning would likely not go over well with your sexual partner, so learn from R. Kelly and leave the pee for the toilet. Suffocation during sex is not unheard of. Actor David Carradine, who starred in the “Kill Bill” movies, was found dead in a closet in Thailand. He was nude, hanging in his hotel closet by a rope. The death was ruled as “accidental asphyxiation” associated with bondage and sexual activity. Lastly, human bone is not as strong as we think. The steady thump, thump, thump of skulls banging against the headboard could cause a potentially life-threatening head injury. Hit your head too hard, and it could result in a skull fracture and potentially brain damage or death. I recommend finding out sooner rather than later if your partner suffers from osteoporosis. A sex injury could become more likely if the intercourse is taking place in a slippery setting, like the shower. I suspect accidently slipping and hitting your head against shower tile probably hurts more than a steady and expected thump from
the headboard. So wear your shower shoes, kids. You can also die from STDs, but everybody knows that. What everybody doesn’t know is that certain STDs, if left untreated, can cause you to go crazy. Neurosyphilis is an infection of the brain or spinal cord that develops when syphilis goes untreated for years. Symptoms include inability to walk, dementia, depression, blindness, seizures, mood swings, paranoia and mania. Hitler has been alleged to suffer from neurosyphilis by the Royal College of Psychiatrists in the United Kingdom, which may explain some of his atrocious actions. Former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, portrayed by Forest Whitaker in the film “The Last King of Scotland,” suffered from the
advance stages of syphilis. Amin killed an estimated 300,000 of his own people, adding his name to the long list of 20th century madmen. Syphilis is likely partially to blame for his ruthless actions. Just know sex can be dangerous. Take the necessary precaution to prevent injury; wear a helmet if you have to. In this day and age, it often takes more than just covering your girth to ensure a fun and safe interaction. Parker Cramer is a 20-yearold political science junior from Houston. THE C-SECTION
Mandate HPV vaccine, dwelling on sexuality is unnecessary
Recently, the push to mandate HPV vaccines has caused much debate in the media. While the opposition has passionately made a stand against mandating the vaccine, the time has come to make the right choice for society as a whole — mandate the vaccine. Genital human papillomavirus (HPV) is Chris Grillot the most common Columnist sexually transmitted malady, infecting 6.2 million people each year, and has already infected an estimated 20 million people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Also, HPV affects 50 percent of men or women at some point in their lives, according to the CDC. Fortunately, 90 percent of the time, the body’s immune system
fights off HPV within two years. But if the virus doesn’t clear, it can cause genital warts, cervical cancer, and cancer of the vulva, vagina, penis, anus and throat, according to the CDC. Moreover, HPV is extremely contagious and can be passed from genital-to-genital contact. And since people have sex — and always will — the virus is bound to continue spreading without a vaccine. Luckily, the vaccines Gardasil and Cervarix have been created, and the National Cancer Institute has called them “highly effective.” The vaccine is administered in three doses and is considered “safe and effective” by the FDA for males and females ages 9 to 26. With a staggering number of people affected each year and the availability of an effective vaccine, it seems fewer people should be contracting the virus. But the opposite is true, proving the vaccine must be
government-mandated for young boys and girls. “I personally think the government should mandate the vaccine for males and females,” said Elizabeth Shirtcliff, a research professor in biopsychology at the University of New Orleans. Shirtcliff said she thinks the vaccine should be lumped in with vaccines for polio and measles that all children get at a young age. If administered when the child is young, they will simply grow up with an immunity to the virus. The government should also help pay for the vaccine, which costs around $400 for all three doses. “The goal of the vaccine is to get people to not get HPV,” Shirtcliff said. “Vaccines benefit a population.” Some critics, particularly Republicans, have argued that mandating the vaccine would increase premarital sexual behavior, but this is
not that case. “I don’t think there’s any evidence that [getting vaccinated] supports sexual behavior,” Shirtcliff said. Also, Shirtcliff noted that children should get vaccinated months before they are sexually active. If the vaccine gets lumped in with others, children would never get the chance to consider the vaccine. As a matter of fact, parents do not even need to discuss what the vaccine does to children, so sex does not even need to be brought up. Finally, the vaccines’ safety has been brought into question. Michele Bachmann claimed the vaccine could possibly cause mental retardation, according to ABC News. But, of course, she was very, very wrong. “HPV vaccines were studied in thousands of people in many countries around the world, including the United States. These studies found
HPV vaccines were safe and cause no serious side effects,” according to the CDC. Overall, the argument to mandate vaccines is overwhelmingly positive. If cancer can be prevented by a vaccine, why not mandate the vaccine? In an age where cancer and diseases are extremely prevalent, our government should take the proper steps to protect the public from them. And since we can vaccinate for HPV — the leading cause of cervical cancer — let’s mandate it. There’s a way to prevent the reported 6.2 million new cases a year. Free and low-cost condoms available
Austen Krantz
Contributing Writer
Need a condom? The University has you covered. Multiple locations on and around campus offer condoms — some for low prices or even for free. Both the Ra Shop on Highland Road and the LSU Women’s Center, located in 307 Hatcher Hall, offer free condoms, and students can buy six condoms for $1 at the Student Health Center pharmacy. In addition, the SHC’s Health Promotions Office offers free condoms packaged with information about sexual health. Non-latex condoms are also available for those with latex allergies. The Health Promotions office also serves to educate students on sexual health, said Health Promotions Coordinator Ashley Granger. As a result, the office distributes two condoms per packet of information. “We may not hand a student six or 15 at a time, but we’ll give them a few, along with education,” Granger said. Granger explained condoms are offered at a low cost because they potentially benefit students’ sexual health. Condoms are also available at other on-campus locations. Outtakes at The 459 Commons offers $3.39 three-condom packs. Take 5 next to The 5 dining hall also offers Trojan varieties at $2.59 per threecondom pack. The Student Union’s eCommons, located in the LSU Bookstore, offers Trojan condoms for $3.29. Condoms offered on campus also benefit students because they include reliable brands like Trojan, Durex and Lifestyles. Despite low-cost availability, students buy condoms spanning a larger variety, which are sometimes more expensive. Economics junior Hayden Peairs said he thinks the media draws people to buy these condoms. “They see all these commercials that make them seem enticing,” Peairs said. “They buy them instead of getting free normal ones they don’t advertise.” Right off campus, CVS and Hilife Wonderland offer a larger assortment of condoms for students seeking variety. In addition, Hilife Wonderland offers single Trojan, Durex and Lifestyle condoms for $0.95, along with other sexual items including lubricant. The store also offers discounts for students who use their Tiger Cards.
