HEY KEY CLUBBERS, HOW DO YOU FEEL? Greetings my fellow Key Clubbers!, My name Is Ria Bains and I attend Oak Harbor High School as this years term of LTG. With that being said, it’s time to get to business for the month of May. To keep you all updated division wise, Oak Harbor and Anacortes have just finished their officer training and are ready to get a kick start on their term. We have recently gotten back on track with communication with Anacortes! I’m still waiting for responses from the Kiwanis advisors from the other schools, but stay tuned because we should be meeting up with them shortly! For those who don’t already know there will be a DCM(Division Council Meeting)on MAY 17th from 1-3PM! Read more of my newsletter for info on the DCM. On another note, I love you all and I’m extremely proud with the work officers have put in, and the members in general because you guys are what makes Key Club possible! Good job to everyone that has been active with service projects and fundraisers for the month of April and keep it up in May, Samurai! - In care and service,
Ria Bains

MAY DCM WHAT IS A DCM? A DCM is a Divisional Council Meeting. They are held monthly, but due to lack of communication with other schools in the division, we weren’t able to hold one in April. BUT no need to worry because we will be having one for the month of May! Anacortes is the only club that has for sure members going, and I’m still working on promoting the DCM for the rest of the clubs, but I hope to have as many people going as possible! There will be a miracle minute and I will take 1 pie to the face if we reach our goal of $20, 2 pies if we reach $30, and 3 pies if we can reach $50! Since this is the first DCM I am holding, I plan to have mainly ice breakers so that our division will have bonding time, and also teams that will be put together so step up your game to earn your team a prize! Don’t forget that it is a POTLUCK so bring food to share with everyone! Anyone is welcome, so bring your friends! See you there!

WARRIOR OF THE MONTH This month’s warrior of the month is awarded to Angelique Guina from Oak Harbor High School! Angelique is the newly elected secretary for OHHS Key Club and was also the first secretary to send me the secretary report. Angelique has shown both character build and leadership skills by staying on track with updates and getting the job done with it needs to be. Congrats and stay tuned for the next issue to see who gets the warrior of the month for June! Remember that you can earn this spotlight by simply going to as many service projects and showing your love through serving your community, and also to serve your home club as well!

Relay For Life is a community based fundraising event of the American Cancer Society. Today, more than 5,000 Relay For Life events take place across twenty countries. Events are held in local communities, campus universities and in virtual worlds. As the American Cancer Society's most successful fundraiser and the organization's signature event, the mission of Relay For Life is to raise funds to improve cancer survival, decrease the incidence of cancer, and improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their caretakers. A Relay For Life event is organized under a volunteer Relay Committee, and implemented by volunteers. It is often organized as a multi-day public gathering, spanning all day and night in a large outdoor space, and many people bring tents and camp out around the walking tracks. Currently, almost 4 million people take part in Relay events in over 5,000 communities in the United States. It is estimated that Relay For Life events have raised nearly $5 billion to date. The first team to raise over $1 million was the Rosebud Miners. The largest virtual fundraising event is Relay For Life of Second Life, which has raised more than $2,000,000 since 2005.

With the Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. To eliminate MNT from the Earth, more than 100 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized. This requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage, transportation, thousands of skilled staff and more. It will take US$110 million — and the dedicated work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family. Kiwanis and UNICEF joined forces to tackle iodine deficiency disorders, achieving one of the most significant public health successes of the 20th century. Now, they are eliminating MNT from the face of the Earth. And in doing so, the project will reach the poorest, most neglected mothers and babies with additional lifesaving health care. The end of this one disease means the beginning of better health for so many families. 10
