Senior student-athletes reflect on a tumultuous four years
By Drew Epstein Staff WriterThe last few senior classes have all been affected by the COVID pandemic that began in 2020. The difference with the class of 2023? They get to finish out high school in a normal sense.
This year’s class were freshmen when the world shut down, and are now being given an opportunity to end their high school sports careers on the right note. Several local seniors in the area spoke on how they felt at the time, and how they feel now as they near the end of high school.
As things started to escalate in March 2020, the whole world was left wondering what the end result was going to be, and for student-athletes, that included the question of when they’d get a chance to play again.
Oneonta’s Finlay Oliver said the knowledge that entire seasons were being affected was hard to deal with.
“I was devastated of course,” he said. “I look forward to soccer season every year. The year that COVID hit, we could’ve had a chance at states, and of course, it’s devastating. It was something that we couldn’t control, and it was not just going to stop us. We practiced with safety and regulations, and I practiced by myself. Coaches outside of school helped us for the spring season to come.”
As things developed, and it became clear the season was probably over, Unatego’s Kylie Mussaw said one of the hardest parts was not getting to properly send off the
“I was devastated of course. I look forward to soccer season every year. The year that COVID hit, we could’ve had a chance at states, and of course, it’s devastating. It was something that we couldn’t control, and it was not just going to stop us. We practiced with safety and regulations, and I practiced by myself. Coaches outside of school helped us for the spring season to come.”

“I was pretty sad because I really enjoyed playing with the people I was with and I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to the seniors,” she said.
While that reality was difficult, many athletes may have found that they were brought closer to their teammates as a result of the challenges they now faced.
“It’s something that not a lot of people have ever been through,” Mussaw said. “I think we all had to overcome the challenges together.”
Oliver also said the pandemic brought him closer to his teammates.
“It for sure did,” he said. “It’s something that we’ve never faced at all. The way we morphed into and bonded in a way that was for something that we didn’t know was coming, it was impressive. I was very happy to be a part of it.”
As Schenevus’ Angie Competiello pointed out, not only did these players all face time away from the sports they love, it impacted their skills and preparation as a result.
“It took away from my abili-
ty to train with my coaches, my peers, everybody,” she explained. “I couldn’t even find a facility to train at if I wanted to alone. I just think COVID genuinely stunted my growth as a player. I was really determined to take advantage of any opportunity I could get to have a ball at my feet once places started opening up. Even if it was by myself at my school field, I would just get out and get back to it because I didn’t want to stop.”
Competiello went on to mention how this was part of the reason she too believed she became closer with her teammates.
“We all lived through it together, and we all understood how we were feeling,” she said. “It made our bonding much easier. We could see it on the field. Even though we didn’t have that time together to train, our mindset was kind of the same.”
When asked what it means to them to be able to finish their senior years in a normal season, all of these seniors thought about the class of 2020 and said how grateful they are to have the opportunity
that their former classmates didn’t.
“I’m very thankful for that; it’s the luxury that the seniors before didn’t have,” Oliver said. “It’s nice to have full crowds, not wearing masks, and somewhat normal of a year. I’m very happy about that.”
“I’m really grateful because I know how hard it was for the seniors when it disrupted their senior season, so I’m really grateful that we were able to return to normalcy for my seasons so I could really enjoy my last year,” Mussaw said.
“I’m beyond grateful. I really am,” Competiello added. “I think about those seniors, when COVID first hit, who didn’t get to have that year. I’m honestly just so grateful to have finished it out in a positive way and spent the last season with my favorite people. I’m very grateful.”
These seniors also shared similar thoughts when reminiscing about what they’ll miss most about high school sports.
“Definitely the memories with my teammates,” Oliver said. “Of course, challenging each other to win games and win championships. The memories I take away each season are always worthwhile every time.”
Mussaw also said she’d miss the relationships, and the friendships she made along the way.
Competiello said that she will miss everything.
“The people, the coaches, the program,” she said. “Going to games, the bus rides blaring music. Just all of it. I loved everyone, I love the coaches. School soccer was one of the best moments in my life and I will never forget it.”

Decorated South Kortright seniors grateful to go out on their own terms
By Nick Richardson Staff WriterThe boys of South Kortright’s senior class of 2023 will go down as among the most decorated in the school’s history. But what makes their accomplishments all the more impressive is the fact that nearly half of their high school seasons were affected by COVID.
After the pandemic hit near the end of the 2019-20 school year, South Kortright’s class of 2023 lost two full basketball seasons, most of two baseball seasons, and most of a soccer season along with every other fellow class.
As the school’s athletic director and coach of both the boys soccer and baseball teams, Bob VanValkenburgh knows how much that group missed out on in their freshman and sophomore years.
“They and the kids that graduated the last two years, they lost some really good seasons,” he said. “I think we had opportunities in different sports to go very far. These kids, they were ninth and tenth-graders then, and they would’ve been part of it, in a lesser role. But it’s good to see them now, even at the end of last season, because they get the opportunity this season. Last year at this time we were still wearing masks and we forget about that, the stuff that we went through.”
Trenton Cole and Adam Champlin, classmates and teammates on the Rams’ soccer and basketball teams, each noted how difficult it was beginning their high school experiences in the midst of COVID.
“I know it was really tough on all of us because that would’ve been one of the greatest years for sports we think, from the senior class to our freshman class, and it just bummed us out that our first year of high school was canceled early,” Cole said.
“We didn’t really know what was going to happen,” Champlin added. “We knew we had a good group of kids for a team, but we didn’t know how that was going to pan out at all.”
But after that rocky start, Champlin, Cole, and other classmates like Josh Anderson, Adin
Haynes, and Troy Dianich experienced a tremendous amount of success over the last two years in soccer, basketball, baseball, and track & field.
All of those names were on both the SK soccer and basketball teams that went to their respective state final fours in 2021-22, while the baseball team made it to the semifinals of the sectional playoffs. This year, the SK soccer team was co-champions of Section IV but fell in the title game on penalties to Southern Cayuga.
It may have taken a while, but things have finally returned to a sense of normalcy.
“It’s so much better,” Cole said. “The masks were just in the way all the time, always having people remind us, ‘Pull it up, pull it up.’ I remember with basketball there was a kid that got kicked out on the opposing team and it was… a lot having to deal with the masks.”
It should come as no surprise that teammates and classmates from a small school like South Kortright have a close bond, especially when they’re playing multiple sports with one another for years on end.
“We’ve basically played with each other since elementary school and I feel like that’s one of the biggest reasons why our success has been so great because we have the chemistry from all these years,” Cole said. “I feel like we just know what we’re doing without talking about it.”
Champlin had similar thoughts about the kind of chemistry he and his teammates have on the field.
“To use basketball as an example, we know
what each other’s thinking, what move we’re going to do throughout the game,” he explained. “So it really does help us a lot knowing what each person’s going to do and the chemistry that we have, and I think that’s probably been a huge key to our success.”
VanValkenburgh said that the type of connection his kids have makes it that much easier for him and his fellow coaches.
“They know what their coaches expect from them, they know what we expect as an athletic program,” he said. “It’s nice to experience winning, but we always talk about having to deal with losing as well. They are close-knit. The chemistry has been great for a number of years now.”
When asked to recall a particularly memorable moment from the past couple years of South Kortright athletics, both Champlin and Cole pointed to the team’s 2022 basketball sectional title game win over Richfield Springs, an overtime classic that featured a last-second three-pointer at the end of regulation by Connor Quarino.
“Connor hitting that buzzer-beater to bring us to overtime was just amazing,” Champlin said. “I think that’s when we were finally really like, ‘Oh, we can do something special this year.’”
“I think the sectional championship this year with soccer, that was a game that I’ll never forget,” Cole added. “Same with the sectional championship last year with Richfield Springs for basketball. Those two games I’ll never forget.”
The members of the class of 2023 will never get to make up for the time they lost at the beginning of their high school careers. But as VanValkenburgh tells it, they made the most of every moment they spent together.
“When I can go home from a practice and say, ‘Boy, that was fun’... There’s been years when I came home from a practice and said, ‘Man, what am I doing?’ But the past few years, every day’s been a joy,” he said. “It’s them, it’s not anything different. They get along and they respect what we’re doing. It’s been enjoyable. It’s a tribute to them.”
“We’ve basically played with each other since elementary school and I feel like that’s one of the biggest reasons why our success has been so great because we have the chemistry from all these years.”
